Why We Moved to Sweden! Pt.1 with Brittany Lang | Ep. 34
00:23:07
It's been a while since our last podcast episode, but we are now back with a new batch of some awesome interviews!
In the summer of 2022, we packed up and moved our family of 4 and 3 pets from our home Rochester, NY, where we had spent our entire lives, to Stockholm, Sweden. I accepted a teaching position there, and over the course of 2 months we sold our house, 2 cars, and all of our belongings to embark on a crazy adventure.
Now that we have lived here for almost 2 years, my wife Brittany and I wanted to explain why we moved to Sweden, and the insane amount of things we had to do in order to get here.
I'm super pumped to be able to introduce you all to my beautiful and amazing wife Brittany, and I hope you enjoy hearing our perspective on moving abroad with your family.
We would love to do more episodes together like this, so please share your comments/questions/feedback, and don't forget to subscribe and rate the show. Thank you!

From https://functional-bodybuilding.com/about/: Hi, I’m Marcus Filly, the founder of Functional Bodybuilding. After leaving medical school, I turned instead to health and fitness to help people more directly with training and nutrition in their day to day lives. Drawing on an extensive training background in soccer and my competitive Crossfit career, I owned an affiliate for years before changing methodologies to help athletes better succeed through individual coaching. After the 2016 CrossFit Games, I was burned out and broken, and about to become a first time father. Functional Bodybuilding was born out of a need to train more for longevity and sustainability – while still looking good and moving well.

Michael Cazayoux is a former CrossFit Games champion, founder of the Brute Strength Podcast (now the Michael Caz Podcast), and co-founder of the nutrition coaching company Working Against Gravity. I listened to his podcast for years, consuming all the amazing content he put out there, and it was a huge inspiration for me creating this podcast and seeking to interview some amazing people.
His latest project is the one I've been the most intrigued by, Soul Searching Adventures. His tagline reads, "Men Wanted. For hazardous wilderness journey, physical and emotional hardship guaranteed, many days completed disconnected from society, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Growth, clarity, peace and connection in case of success."
I share a similar passion to Michael's regarding the power that experiences outdoors and in the wilderness can have on us, and I loved getting the chance to hear him explain more about it and hear where this passion of his comes from.

This is my second time interviewing Kelly, first with Juliet, and I wish I could interview them one-hundred times more. Our feet are one of the most overlooked and neglected parts of our body, and we don't realize the enormous impact they have on so many parts of our daily lives. Becoming a College Athlete with Seth Johnston and Joe Clarke of Brockport Basketball | Episode 7
00:44:27
Want to know what college recruiters are looking for in their athletes? Should you specialize in a sport at a young each to reach that level?
The State University of New York College at Brockport has been a powerhouse in the Division III Men's Basketball scene for years. Their fast-paced style of play has produced 9 conference championship teams and several appearances in the NCAA Division III Championship tournament. One of those appearances was in the 2006-2007 season where they reached the Elite 8, and Seth and Joe were both players on that team.
This 2019-2020 season was on track to be one of their best ever with a 26-3 record, and ranking as high as 11th on D3HOOPS.com. Just as they reached the Sweet Sixteen in the tournament, their season was cut short by the coronavirus.
Seth Johnston and Joe Clarke are both long-time coaches on staff, alongside Head Coach Greg Dunne. They share the recruiting process used by Brockport, and the types of players they are looking for in their program. They also stress the importance of unstructured play during childhood, and the importance of becoming a well-rounded athlete versus specializing in one sport while growing up. This is a great episode for students looking to play a sport in college, parents looking for help on guiding their kids in sports, and fellow coaches at any level looking to gain some insight on some of the behind the scenes works of an excellent program.
Prepare, Practice, Play with The Brand X Method™ | Episode 8
01:02:32
The Brand X Method™ has been in the business of doing what's best for kids and teens for over 20 years. I have been an avid follower of them for much of that time, using their methodology in my PE classes and while coaching. Their approach to youth fitness is refreshing; when others are trying to get their kids to specialize and increase movement intensity, they are doing the opposite. This allows them to build a more solid and well-rounded foundation, being able to apply that to whatever activity they want to pursue. From their website, "The mastery, confidence, and motivation that kids develop in our gyms are the ingredients of freedom and fearlessness. The Brand X Method™ instills the essence of adventure, passion, and joy in kids and teens when playing their favorite sports, trying new things, and tackling life’s challenges so they can step out of our gyms knowing they can do whatever they set out to do."

It's refreshing to talk to someone as passionate as Josh is about playing and spending time with his kids, and the positive impact that has on their lives. What is Physical Literacy? with Keegan Martin | Episode 26
00:25:27
In this episode we have a returning guest Keegan Martin of The Brand X Method. Keegan is the Director of Education for the Brand X Method and explains to us what Physical Literacy is and why it is important in any youth program. This is a component of Physical Education and youth training that I don't hear about often enough, but I think it should be at the core of what we do with kids. In a world where kids are specializing in sport at a younger age every year, it is increasingly important for this kids to develop a broad and solid base of movement. Physical Literacy equips kids with the tools they need to take on any physical task with confidence and competence. Hope you enjoy the show!
Ginny Yurich is the founder of 1000 Hours Outside, "a global movement designed for any age child (or adult) and any environment" meant to encourage families to spend more time outside. I have been implementing this program and tracker sheets with my students at school, and with my son at home. Once you get your kids outside, nature takes care of everything for you. In this day and age of screen use, it is more important than ever to encourage outdoor play. Enjoy the show, and be sure to check out Ginny's website and social for more!
"We track a lot of things these days - steps, calories, budgets, frequent flyer miles etc - why not track something so beneficial to our children as well? There are so many things that compete for our time so it's easy for something like this to get back-burnered. We found that if we spread these 4-6 hour chunks out over a few days (shooting for roughly 20 hours a week) it would take us to averaging about 1,000 hours of outside activity a year. That seems insane, maybe - we get it. But did you know the average American child spends 1,200 hours a year in front of screens? Now THAT seems insane to us, but hey, we get it - parenting is hard and sometimes those screens 'seem' like such a welcome reprieve from the chaos. We certainly are not militant about it and we don't take a 'no screens ever or you will surely die' approach either. But we would, quite vehemently, argue that nature- big, beautiful, bountiful nature - is the absolute and very BEST reprieve for you and your children. Honestly, they don't even compare!"

Matt Seebaum is the Executive Director of the Strider Education Foundation, the provider for All Kids Bike. Their mission is to get every Kindergartener in the country to learn how to ride a bike in their PE class. It seems crazy, but over the past 5-10 years, far less kids are out riding their bikes than ever before. Matt and I talk about how biking for us was like our ticket to life when we were kids; it's how we got everywhere and spent most of our time. There are so many valuable skills kids can develop when they go through the process of learning how to ride a bike, and it could turn into a life-long passion for them.
All Kids Bike provides schools with a class-pack of Strider balance bikes, along with helmets, pedals if/when needed, and a curriculum to follow. The more money your/our community raises, the more schools can be provided with this amazing resource. The school I currently teach at is going through the fundraising process right now with All Kids Bike, and we are pumped to get our kids started later this year!

Intentionally Unplugged with Denise Roland | Episode 31
00:45:47
This week's episode is with the founder of Intentionally Unplugged, aimed at equipping and empowering families to have healthy boundaries with technology. Denise is a mom of 3 and a teacher, so she sees first hand the impact technology and screens has on her and her kids' lives. She gives us some suggestions on how to navigate screen time with ourselves and with our kids, especially during these times when it seems like we are all required to be in front of a computer.
This interview really hits home with me because I struggle to separate with my phone and use it as a crutch whenever I'm bored, almost like a reflex. I try to make a conscious habit of putting it away when I get home from work, but there always seems to be an excuse to take it back out. Just know that you're not alone out there, and the tips from this episode can be beneficial to all of us!
Also, this will be my last episode as I take a break for a little while to "intentionally unplug". Our second child was just born this week, so I want to take some time off of interviewing and editing and enjoy her and have some fun with my family!
I hope you enjoy the episode and please don't forget to leave a review, subscribe, and/or follow to help spread the mission of MOVRS! Thank you!
