Christian Zyp interviews Canadian cinematic legend Vincenzo Natali about the two films he has featured at the Calgary Underground FIlm Festival (CUFF), CUBE (1997) and NOTHING (2003). They will be screened over April 20-21 at the Globe Cinema.

Vincenzo Natali reminisces about these spiritual sequels, CUBE and NOTHING. In CUBE, without remembering how they got there, several strangers awaken in a prison of cubic cells, some of them booby-trapped. There's one-time cop, master of escapes, autistic savant Kazan (Andrew Miller) and architect Worth (David Hewlett), who might have more information on the maze than he lets on. Where as, in NOTHING, corporate worker (David Hewlett) and a travel agent (Andrew Miller) find themselves in an environment surrounded by blankness.

Christian Zyp interviews Denny Tedesco (dir) about his documentary IMMEDIATE FAMILY. It screens Friday May 5th @ 7:00 pm as part of NorthWest Fest at the Metro Cinema.

IMMEDIATE FAMILY is the true story of a group of close friends who became the studio band to the biggest stars of the 1970s and beyond, changing the course of musical history. The film chronicles the next wave of studio players to follow in the footsteps of 60s session icons, Denny Tedesco also directed the original THE WRECKING CREW (2008) documentary and the series HANGING WITH DR. Christian Zyp interviews Matthew Rankin (director/co-writer) about his new film UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE. You can see it at the Metro Cinema from Feb 4th - 13th. Matthew Rankin will be at the Metro Cinema for the Feb 4th screening to do a Q&A.

UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE is Rankin’s second feature. A lovingly detailed, charmingly impossible story of a Canada where Persian and French are the two official languages, and loneliness is the common currency. The film blends the seemingly unrelated stories of Negin and Nazgol, who find money frozen in ice and try to claim it; Massoud, a tour guide in Winnipeg who is leading a confused and disoriented tour group; and Matthew (Rankin), who quits his unfulfilling job with the provincial government of Quebec and travels home to Winnipeg to visit his mother. The film is the official selection for Canada's International Picture Nomination for the 2025 Oscars.

Adapted from Buck’s rollicking memoir "I Have Lived Four Lives", the film weaves together stories from his life, including his harrowing young years of displacement and addiction. Seamlessly fusing present-day scenes with cinematic re-enactments and archival footage, this intimate yet expansive documentary takes us on an inspiring journey to the space beyond, and to the spaces between us all.

PLOT... Set in a vaguely late-’50s/early-’60s rural milieu, story centers on the awkward pubescence of sixth grader Nicholas (Jeff Sutton), whose pilot father died in a crash some time before. That event left a huge gap in the lives of both son and mother (Ardith Boxall), and mom is distressed that her only child seems to be growing more remote.

AWA ISKWÊW KÂ-ÂPIHKÊW (THE SASH MAKER) - DIrectors Rebecca Sadowski (Métis) and Tamarra Lessard collaborate on a Métis film with contemporary dance, Cree and English translated poetry, and traditional finger- weaving. The Sash Maker promotes the healing of long- standing cultural wounds. The work communicates a collective yearning for family, understanding, and peace. By reflecting on our past, together we can move forward as people woven from diverse strands and circumstances.

Rebecca is an Edmonton-based Métis performer, choreographer, and dance instructor. She has recently joined the Good Women Dance Collective as a collective artist as well as a curator for the NextFest Festival. She currently teaches dance with dancED Movement Project, and the City of Edmonton.

Lindsey Campbell is joined by Mark Davies for another edition of THANKS TELEFILM where they examine movies that great examples of why their funding is important and why some are... questionable

In RADIUS... Liam wakes from a car crash with no memory of who he is. As he makes his way into town to look for help, he finds only dead bodies, all with strange pale eyes. Liam’s first assessment is that a virus is present in the air, but he soon discovers the horrible truth: anyone who comes within a 50-foot radius of him dies instantly.

Jarret Kamm interviews Courtney Montour (director) about her documentary short film MARY TWO-AXE EARLY: I AM INDIAN AGAIN. The film is focused on the powerful story of Mary Two-Axe Earley, who fought for over two decades to challenge the discrimination against Indigenous women embedded in Canada’s Indian Act and became a key figure in Canada’s women’s rights movement.

LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE traces the history of voting rights struggles in the United States from 1960 through the present day. The film draws parallels between the Mississippi voter registration drive of the early 1960's and North Carolina's 'Moral Monday' movement in the present day. A key goal of the film is connecting the dots between the generations to contextualize the current political environment surrounding race and voting.

LUNATIC profiles the complex life of famed WWF women's wrestler Luna Vachon who, while battling for glory inside the wrestling ring, was also battling her inner demons outside the ring. Born into a wrestling dynasty, Trudy Vachon transformed into Luna “The Lunatic” Vachon, a formidable force in the WWF during the “Attitude Era” in the late 1990s early 2000s. Known for her intimidating presence and unparalleled skill, Luna shattered stereotypes, inspiring a generation of women to embrace their strength and challenge the status quo. Beyond the wrestling ring, however, Luna battled personal demons, including the guilt of balancing motherhood with her career, a bipolar diagnosis, abuse, and addiction. The film poignantly portrays the duality of Luna’s life, revealing the sensitive woman beneath the hardened exterior.

Raphael just fell in love with a girl at community service. Raphael might get blown up by nukes. He’s a good kid, so you can't blame Raphael for the events that unfold after his arrest. None of it is Raphael's fault, but it is his problem.

Lindsey Campbell and Mark Davies examine another film funded by Telefilm to see if it worth appreciating. This time it's Sook-Yin Lee's film OCTAVIO IS DEAD. A cryptic tale with no lack of sexual undertones, Octavio is Dead! follows Tyler (Sarah Gadon) on an adventure of self-discovery.

In OCTAVIO IS DEAD Tyler escapes her overbearing mother (Rosanna Arquette) and travels to the rich and surreal world of her deceased father, Octavio (Raoul Trujillo), a father she never knew. She discovers that “the past is never dead” as she navigates her own sexual identity and the occult. Her ability to know the difference between fantasy and reality becomes an obstacle for Tyler, and she speaks to her late father who tells her that “you can’t hide forever.”

In 2018 Christian Zyp interviewed filmmaker Anna BIller about her second feature THE LOVE WITCH. THis interview has been re-edited to give you a look back into the past of where Anna was at and how she felt about the film at the time of its theatrical release. THE LOVE WITCH was an nearly 8 year passion project for Anna and it shows in every frame of the film. In the film Elaine (Samantha Robinson), a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her gothic Victorian apartment she makes spells and potions, then picks up men and seduces them. However, her spells work too well, and she ends up with a string of hapless victims. When she at last meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved drives her to the brink of insanity and murder.

We discuss Anna's inspiration, her aesthetic sensibility, filming in 35 mm, why the project took so many years and more.

Christian Zyp interviews documentary filmmaker Anna Kuelken. She was one of the recipients of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award for her work on films such as FATHER LIKE SON. Lindsey Campbell and Mark Davies return with another edition of THANK TELEFILM, where they decide if this Canadian film is worth the investment. ALINE is a fictionalized biopic about a singer that has a life eerily similar to Celine Dion, even though Dion was not involved in the production of the film.

When director Valérie Lemercier was asked if Dion had seen the film, she said, "I contacted Celine Dion's manager in Quebec who told me that maybe Celine would see it one day but she was not interested in it."

THE LAST PODCAST is a dark comedy about a skeptic podcaster desperate for subscribers who lands the ultimate guest — an actual ghost — but keeping the afterlife on-air comes with killer consequences. Young and ambitious, Charlie and his podcast "ParaNormalcy" take the piss out of those who believe in ghosts. His girlfriend Brie wishes he wasn't so mean-spirited about debunking spirits, but Charlie's humorous sardonic style is what his burgeoning audience loves about him. In the feature film BLOODTHIRSTY, indie singer-songwriter Grey Kessler suffers anxiety over having released a successful album and feels pressure for a successful follow-up. She also takes medication to try to stop dreams of herself as a wolf, and she appears to have other medical issues too, though her doctor can find nothing physically wrong.

To get closer to Aleks, Jake devotes himself to making the basketball team only to realize it’s not basketball he really wants. Distraught and confused, Jake pulls away until he’s finally outed as gay. With the truth in the open, Jake and his father come to terms with the reality of their relationship and expectations for each other.

Set on a Nova Scotia dairy farm, John Andrew has just lost his wife Miranda to cancer. When a young woman with a startling resemblance to Miranda appears on his porch, an odyssey towards understanding begins. John Andrew’s estranged son Donald is now Dawn, and she’s come home to mourn her mother and keep her promise to repair her relationship with her Dad. Restoring the tractor her mother learned to drive on becomes a focus for the mechanically minded Dawn. John Andrew begins to realize that if he’s to reclaim this relationship, he has to come out with Dawn, and what better setting than the community tractor trials — an event Miranda created as a tireless village volunteer — where he proudly cheers for his daughter Dawn, as she enters the arena at the wheel of the lovingly restored tractor.

And in the final hours of that plan, Jack will have a party with his friends, tell his wife how much he loves her, and finally, he will take a cocktail designed to end his life peacefully. Twenty-five years earlier, the musician was given six months to live. But he lasted 25 years, until taking a turn for the worse. This predicament propels Jack on a quest to reconcile with his mother, find his biological father, and prepare his exit strategy. Jack’s best friend documents his three-year quest to die a happy man, culminating in a permanent going-away party.

In I LIKE MOVIES Lawrence Kweller is an irascible, self- and movie-obsessed teenager living in the wilds of early-2000s Burlington, Ontario. He’s the kind of guy who, when he buys a movie ticket, mentions the director’s name just to show that he’s there for the right reasons. He dreams of NYU, where he’ll be mentored by a grateful Todd Solondz. But for Lawrence, who delivers every statement with utter certainty, this isn’t a mere dream: it’s locked in — as long as he can make thousands of dollars working part-time at his local video store.

Roger reluctantly joins forces with the Music and Amusement Association to overturn the ban while falling in love with Ellen, an artist and single mother.

FLASHBACK is the story of a defiant disco dance culture of sweat and sex and drugs and fashion in Edmonton. It became a sensation on the international club circuit despite police raids, threats of violence and the scourge of AIDS. OMA focuses on retired nurse Sandy Moser. Following the death of her husband, Sandy found that the arts saved her life. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic hitting the theater and live event industries the hardest, she wanted to give back. But how does one woman living on her country acreage repay a whole community? For Sandy, it was making 3000 cloth masks. By herself. For free.

Moving Radio contributor Lindsey Campbell watches movies for a living. Sometimes she sees film that makes her think, "Thanks Telefilm..." In this edition, Lindsey discusses the film "SuperGrid" with Darcy Twarog. SuperGrid is a 2018 Canadian post-apocalyptic directed by Lowell Dean, who previously directed horror-comedies WolfCop and Another WolfCop. In a future where a plague has infected much of the population, two brothers are tasked with retrieving a mysterious package by traveling to Canada, which mining conglomerates have turned into a wasteland. SHADOW OF GOD... However, this small town holds dark secrets about Mason's past and the religious organization once run there by his father, Angus (Shaun Johnston, HEARTLAND). Thought dead, Angus reappears, forcing a reunion between father and son. But Angus is different now, and before long, Mason suspects he’s possessed, not by the devil, but by something… holy. When Mason attempts to exorcise the holy presence from his father, he sets off a chain of events that may end in a cataclysm of biblical proportions, testing everything he holds sacred.

Mark Davies interviews Tim Mackenzie-Smith (director/producer) about his documentary GETTING IT BACK: THE STORY OF CYMANDE which is featured as part of the 19th edition of the Calgary Underground FIlm Festival 2022. 

Cymande are the unsung heroes of hip hop, disco and a host of other genres, whose message of peace, love and funk sailed beyond Britain's shores and helped shape music for five decades. Long after they stopped playing, the music played on, so they returned to play some more.

In the racially turbulent UK of the early ‘70s, a group of black musicians came together in South London with a common love of rhythms and a message of peace. Cymande – with the dove as their symbol – combined jazz, funk, soul and Caribbean grooves to form a unique sound. Despite success in the USA they faced indifference in their native Britain, becoming disillusioned and disbanding. But the music lived on, as new generations of artists imbibed and reworked their pioneering sounds in fresh ways. From Soul II Soul to De La Soul, MC Solaar to The Fugees, the Dove had spread Cymande's message far and wide, prompting their return after forty years. This is their story. The satirical, science-fiction thriller from Riley Stearns (THE ART OF SELF-DEFENSE) screens as part of the Calgary Underground Film Festival April 21, 2022. The film centres on a woman who opts for a cloning procedure after she receives a terminal diagnosis and is court-martialled to a duel to the death when she starts to recover.

The film stars Scottish actress Karen Gillan (JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE) playing opposite herself in the roles of Sarah and Double Sarah, alongside Aaron Paul (BREAKING BAD). DUAL had its world premiere at Sundance 2022, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.

It will screen at the Calgary Underground Film Festival Saturday April 22 @ 9:45 pm and Thursday April 27 @ 4 pm at the Globe Cinema. Mike Mendez will also be in attendance for the screening for a Q&A.

SATANIC HISPANICS is an anthology of 5 short films from some of the leading Latin filmmakers in the horror genre (Mike Mendez, Demian Rugna, Eduardo Sanchez, Gigi Saul Guerrero & Alejandro Brugues). The film spotlights Hispanic talent both in front and behind the camera. The film starts when police raid a house in El Paso. They find it full of dead Latinos, and only one survivor. He’s known as The Traveler, and when they take him to the station for questioning, he tells them those lands are full of magic and talks about the horrors he’s encountered in his long time on this earth, about portals to other worlds, mythical creatures, demons and the undead.

THE KILLING OF PHILLIP BOURDEAU is the story of a death that tore apart the Nova Scotia community of Isle Madame, a postcard-perfect collection of Acadian fishing villages off the coast of Cape Breton Island. Phillip Boudreau, a local man known for poaching lobsters, was killed by fishermen in a crime the media dubbed “murder for lobster,” which made international headlines seven years ago. But as anyone from the area will tell you, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Director Megan Wennberg unpacks a complicated and tangled web of blame in The Killing of Phillip Boudreau. The film looks at Boudreau himself, the challenges of policing this area and the role the community played as a whole: everyone knew there was a problem, but no one did anything before it was too late.
