23 Apr 2021 | 96. Cabaret with special guest Darren Elms | 01:30:46
Doesn't my body drive you wild with desire? We watched Cabaret (1972) with our friend Darren Elms and we're here for the divine decadence darling! We take a deep dive and try to find out where Sally Bowles ends and Liza Minnelli begins. Liza belts out these signature songs like such a pro we don't even care that Sally the character is an untalented hack who can't hold a note. Michael York is dreamy as Brian (stand in for Christopher Isherwood) and Joel Grey is creepily perfect as the Master of Ceremonies. Life IS a cabaret old chum so come to the Cabaret. Get ready to talk about Truth, Beauty, Freedom and above all else Love because we watched Moulin Rouge! (2001) with Harper and Jonathan from Hawkeyes Podcast. We turn into hardcore theater geeks as we breakdown Satine's (Nicole Kidman) wig journey, Christian's (Ewan McGregor) vocal chops and Zidler's (Jim Broadbent) off his rocker performance. We relive our early obsession with this movie and which one of us had a Moulin Rouge/Limousine themed birthday party. The password is Spectacular, Spectacular! 11 Nov 2022 | 172. Ghost with special guest Joshua Clement | 01:42:12
"Molly you in danger girl." We watched the blockbuster romantic fantasy film Ghost directed by Jerry Zucker with our friend Joshua Clement, and all the sudden we feel the urge to take up pottery as a hobby. Ghost made over 500 million dollars in its theatrical run, and was one of the highest grossing romances of the 90s. After 32 years what's not to still love here. It has our forever movie hunk Patrick Swayze, prime Demi Moore as the most beautiful cryer in cinema history, Tony Goldwyn as one of the hottest villians ever, and let's not forget Whoopi Goldberg's Academy Award winning performance as Oda Mae Brown. We still quote, "Damn baby! What did you do to your hair?" and "Do you wanna kiss my butt", on the reg. We talk about what was in the water of the movies of the year 1990 (Pretty Woman, Field of Dreams, Dances With Wolves Goodfellas, Misery), the intimidating supporting actress catagory Whoopi was up against, and everyone's favorite Hollywood power couple Bruce and Demi. This movie may not have been meant for gay children in the 90s, but we're here to tell you this movie had a lasting effect on us. Stay away from the shadow demons, and bring your Demi pixie cut reference photo to your Regis it's Ghost! 21 Oct 2022 | 169. Ed Wood with special guest Jackson Cooper | 02:03:00
"It's not a monster movie. It's a supernatural thriller." We watched Ed Wood (1994) with our friend and MTUG SuperStar Jackson Cooper and we don't need coverage - the first take was perfect! Ed Wood is often hailed as the worst director of all time and we're here to tell you - "Glen or Glenda" and "Plan 9 From Outer Space" are pretty terrible, but his story is fascinating. Johnny Depp plays Wood as optimistic, a little naive but driven in his quest to make the perfect movie. He doesnt let a little thing like knowing how to direct get in his way. Martin Laundau gives a hilarious and Oscar winning performance as Bela Lugosi and the rest of the cast really shines. We love the Lisa Marie years of Tim Burton's repertoire and she does not disappoint as Vampira aka Maila Nurmi. Burton really captures the rural look and feel of Hollywood in the 50's and if you're like us, the fun of this movie is heading to Youtube to compare the footage to Ed Wood's actual movies - most of which are in the public domain and fully available to stream leagally and for free. 1950's B movies are camp fun and Ed's cross dressing storyline is handled delicately and holds up well for a movie from the 90's about the 50's. You can't get anymore queer than Vampira's BDSM waistline, Ed Wood directing in angora and a room full of cross dressers. 19 Aug 2022 | 160. Welcome to the Dollhouse with special guest Seth Shubin | 01:28:04
Not all girls want to play with dolls. It’s been 27 years since Todd Solondz’s Welcome to the Dollhouse, and we’re here to tell you that it's still savage AF. Seth Subin from @jerkofalltrades joins us again to discuss this pitch black coming-of- age comedy, and we really just want to give Dawn Wiener a hug and tell her it’s all going to be alright. We get into the 90s icon that is Heather Matarazzo as the ultimate outsider in us all. Dawn launched her to bigger movies like 54, Princess Diaries, and Saved. Matarazzo’s Dawn Wiener is just as potent now as it was when we first got our hands on a copy of this movie. We talk about Brendan Sexton III, as the type of damaged bully we all remember growing up, and the beautiful himbo Steve Rogers (played by Eric Mabius). This movie is essential 90s cinema, and we’re not entirely sure if a movie like it could be made today. 18 Oct 2024 | 257. Halloween II with special guest Gabe Munoz | 01:50:52
"He was my patient for fifteen years. He became an obsession with me until I realized that there was nothing within him, neither conscious nor reason that was... even remotely human." We watched "Halloween II" with our friend Gabe Munoz and we'll be right back after we x-ray our entire candy haul. This movie wastes no time and picks up mere moments after Dr. Loomis (a frenzied Donald Pleasence) unloads 6 rounds into Michael Meyers at the end of the 1978 original. With all of our characters either unalived by Michael or under sedation in the emergency room, we get a whole new cast of Haddonfield residents to get picked off by "the shape". Is it to this movies detriment that OG Final Girl Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) is in a hospital bed most of the movie? Maybe. Is her wig an even worse offence? Definitely. Original director John Carpenter may not have returned to helm this one, but he penned the script along with then wife and collaborator Debra Hill so the "bones" of the story and characters are there (spooky pun intended), but can Laurie's minimal screen time and Dr. Loomis frantic delivery save this one? The "Halloween" franchise has had its ups and downs but this kooky entry is a lot of fun and definitely worth the watch. 20 Oct 2023 | 213. Interview with the Vampire: Late Fees Edition | 01:33:07
This spooky season we decided to revisit a Movies That Made Us Gay classic and bring you a fresh take on the 1994 hit "Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles" directed by Neil Jordan. Like Kirsten Dunst's Claudia we want some more! We love this movie so much we had to do a second episode. We talk about whether the AMC TV series has altered our opinions of the movie and if it comes across as "dated" now that we're closing in on 30 years. A discussion of Interview wouldn't be complete without a take on Tom Cruise and his handling of the character of the vampire Lestat and his dysfunctional relationship with Louis (Brad Pitt) and their "daughter" Claudia (Kirsten Dunst). What gay themes the film sometimes tip toes around in 94, the AMC show dives headfirst in today. Speaking of which, help us fan-cast our imaginary '90s Network Television Vampire Chronicles 3 night spectacular - RIcky Schroder as Lestat! We also double featured our revisit of Interview with immediately watching Queen of the Damned because were gluttons for punishment, so consider this our Queen of the Damned episode. 10 Sep 2021 | 116. Buffy The Vampire Slayer with special guest Jacob Carrillo | 01:38:22
"You ruined my new jacket! Kill him A LOT!" We watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) with our friend Jacob Carrillo and we still just want to marry Christian Slater and die. Back before Sarah Michelle Gellar and the "Scooby gang" were galavanting around Sunnydale trying to close the Hellmouth, there was the Buffy movie with Kristy Swanson and the oh-so-dreamy Luke Perry. Serving as a jumping-off point for the TV series, the movie itself is super charming with its uber 90's cast, wardrobe and overall aesthetic. Luke Perry in a Caesar cut and soul patch? Swoon! We can't help but draw parallels to the TV series, but we try to keep the conversation aimed towards the movie. I mean they're just SO different - movie Buffy is ash blonde, TV Buffy is honey blonde! 07 Aug 2020 | 59. Outrageous Fortune with special guest Greg Lightner | 01:17:38
It’s a buddy, caper, heist, road movie made for, you know... ladies. We watched Outrageous Fortune (1987) with our friend Greg Lightner and we agree - you boff Romeo over Hamlet any day. Bette Midler and Shelley Long play an Odd Couple at each other throats and apparently they kept it up behind the scenes as well. We talk about the drama behind who got top billing and who spilled tea on Oprah but lets face it - the real reason we watched this movie over and over again was to learn Bette’s monologues. Calling actors “bulls*****rs who get paid” in a Brooklyn accent definitely made us gay. It’s Episode 59 of Movies That Made Us Gay! 03 Jun 2022 | 149. Weird Science with special guest Dylan Hay Chapman | 01:40:27
What do you little maniacs want to do first? We’re not just talking candle wax on the nipples or witchcraft, or chip, dips, chain n whips, we’re talking about the renegade John Hughes movie "Weird Science" (1985) with our favorite straight brother Dylan Hay-Chapman. Kelly LaBrock is insanely fierce as Lisa, the Marry Poppins for teenage boys. The gays want to be her, and the straights well you know… We talk about all the iconique Lisa costume changes, '80s bad boy cuties Robert Downey Jr and Robert Rusler, a scene stealing Bill Paxton, and the two teenage boys (Anthony Michael Hall, and Ilan Mitchell-Smith) at the center of one of the horniest teen movies ever made. 18 Mar 2022 | 139. Star Trek with Seán Ferrick | 01:38:22
We talk ALL things Star Trek with ultimate Trek encyclopedia Seán Ferrick (TrekCulture) and we’re boldly going… you know the rest. Why are queer people so drawn to Star Trek? That’s like asking why gays love horror - no one knows! Well some people know. Star Trek promised us a vision of the future free from poverty, sexism and prejudice (just don’t look too deep into the origins of the Klingons) and us gays long for a place where we can just be ourselves right? Star Trek also promises us a future filled with metallic non-stretch fabrics, pointy sideburns and catsuits for everyone! This episode we take a deep dive into the Star Trek The Next Generation episode “The Outcast” from 1992 which takes a veiled look at homosexuality and gender when Riker (Jonathan Frakes) falls for a member of a non-binary alien species (played by a cis-female actor). We talk about what lured us into Star Trek, what we still love about the franchise all these years later and how we would make a living in the Star Trek universe. Guinan has gotta need a bar back right? In the Trek universe the men are macho, the women are fabulous and the gays can’t get enough of it. Live long, and prosper!
26 Apr 2024 | 233. Gone Girl with special guest Donovan Marcotte | 01:47:26
"We're so cute I wanna punch us in the face." We watched Gone Girl (2014) with our friend Donovan Marcotte and are straight people ok? Listen, we get it, cheating on your spouse is not ok... but girl, take it easy! We take a deep dive into the mystery that is Ben Affleck - some of us (Pete) would risk it all for a chance at him, while others (Donovan) would risk it all for a chance to punch him in the face. Both reasonable options. We are also Very here for Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) and her never ending quest to destroy her mediocre, layabout, cheating husband. We support womens rights but we also support womens wrongs. (Thanks Donovan for that one) "You think you'd be happy with a nice Midwestern girl? No way, baby! I'm it." 26 May 2023 | 193. Legally Blonde with special guest Wolfgang La Vie | 01:40:31
“You got into Harvard Law? What, like it’s hard?” We’re talking about 2000s comedy classic Legally Blonde with our friend Wolfgang La Vie, and whoever said orange is the new pink is seriously disturbed. This role sealed the deal, making Reese Witherspoon the titan of the industry she still is today. Reese’s Elle Woods is a true feminist icon, and this movie holds up some twenty years after its release. We discuss the evolution of Amanda Brown’s novel turned script. Going from a raunchy college comedy in the vein of American Pie, to a story of female empowerment, Legally Blonde was on to something making the “dumb blonde” the smartest person in the room. This cast is incredible. We get America's cute boyfriend from the early 2000s Luke Wilson, Selma Blair's anti-Elle Woods, and the dynamic duo Alanna Ubach and Jessica Cauffiel as the hilarious best friends. Jennifer Coolidge makes a truly iconic appearance as Elle’s nail tech bestie Paulette. “So what’s this Vivian got that you don’t... Three Tits?” still sends us. Elle taught us many important life lessons as young gays. Always believe in yourself, workplace harassment is never okay, and everyone should know the golden rules of haircare are simple and finite.” Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna
08 Oct 2021 | 120. Sleepy Hollow with special guest Billy Roach | 01:46:22
How’s your head? We watched Sleepy Hollow (1999) with our friend and MTMUG Superstar Billy Roach and tonight the horseman comes for you! This movie is peak Tim Burton - we’re talking dramatic American-Gothic scenery, Johnny Depp putting on a silly voice, and Lisa Marie scaring the ever loving heck out of us. Not to mention Miranda Richardson in a drag-worthy dual role and Christina Ricci looking like a living Margaret Keen painting. It’s funny, scary, definitely campy and at times a straight up gore-fest. Do yourself a favor and revisit Sleepy Hollow. And don’t forget… watch your head. 25 Aug 2023 | 205. Freaky Friday with special guest Devin Lotfi | 01:48:06
"Darling. Could you, like, chill for a sec?" We watched "Freaky Friday" (2003) with friend of the pod Devin Lotfi and we want to get a little ear-stud right... there. Man oh man, this movie is fun! Lindsay Lohan and Queen Jamie Lee Curtis are having a blast and it shows on screen - the two are at their best in scenes with each other. We spend some time talking about the 1976 original with Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris, and even the oft forgotten Disney Channel Original Movie (or DCOM if you're nasty) from 1995 with Shelley Long and Gabby Hoffman, but this Mark Waters classic is really the one that has aged like fine wine. Will we ever get a "re-quel" with Jamie Lee and Lindsay? We can only hope. Did Chad Michael Murray's career come to an all-too-abrupt halt? Maybe. Are the early-aughts fashions both great and terrible? Absolutely. Listen, Lindsay is showing that early promise everyone always talked about, Jamie Lee is swinging for the fences with her comedic choices and director Mark Waters would team up again with Linds the following year to give us the utterly homosexual classic "Mean Girls." You're welcome! Now excuse us, we have to apply a hydrating face mask - we look like the Crypt Keeper!! 02 Jun 2023 | 194. The Virgin Suicides with special guest Espie Quintero | 01:45:27
"Obviously, Doctor, you've never been a thirteen year old girl." We watched The Virgin Suicides (1999) with our friend Espie Quintero and we all want to live in a world directed by Sofia Coppola. We can't help but fall in love with the gauzy soft-focus, the spot-on '70s soundtrack and the ethereal songs by Air punctuating every scene. Something about the way the sunlight trickles through the trees and even the suburban French provincial decorating schemes makes us want to inhabit this world. We might even be ok with being left alone on the football field to get a chance at Trip Fontaine (Josh Hartnett). Looking back at this film from the "greatest movie year ever" the subject matter is a little dark but Espie guides us through this important film about women that was written and directed by a woman in a way our peanut-sized male brains couldn't possibly articulate. We examine the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine that permeates this movie as well as what forces brought us, as young gays, to identify so much with these five tragic female characters. We also give Kirsten Dunst her flowers for yet another example of a classic film not quite celebrated in its time, but has gone on to live a life of cult cinema status. Help is available. 17 Aug 2023 | 204. The First Wives Club with special guest Jack Fields | 01:39:24
"It's the 90s, plastic surgery is like good grooming." More prophetic words were never uttered on screen. We watched "The First Wives Club" (1996) with our friend Jack Fields and you'll have to excuse us while we spontaneously burst out into a rousing rendition of "You Don't Own Me" while wearing our finest ivory pants suits. We still don't know how we let this '90s classic slip passed us all this time, but now that we've seen it you can trust and believe we are full fledged members of the club. It took us a minute to reconcile the fact that we may or may not be closer in age to Dianne, Bette and Goldie's characters than we're comfortable admitting, but once we got passed that little tidbit we were fully enthralled. Watching those three powerhouse comedic actresses let loose while sharing top billing is a sight we don't often get to see these days - and the rest of the cast is filled with MTMUG faves : Stockard Channing! Maggie Smith! SJP! Dan Hedaya! Elizabeth Berkley! Don't worry, we're adding this super quotable movie to our repertoire of daily non-sequitur film quotes! "You think that because I'm a movie star I don't have feelings. Well you're wrong. I'm an actress. I've got all of them!" 21 Apr 2023 | 188. Bring It On with special guest Braden Davis | 01:54:01
"This is not a democracy, it's a cheerocracy. I'm sorry but I'm overruling you." We watched Bring It On (2000) and you better believe it's already been broughten! Who could have predicted this bubbly cheerleader movie would stand the test of time, keep a grip on gay culture and spawn no less than SIX (direct to DVD) sequels? The fact that Bring It On knows exactly what kind of movie it is only adds to its charm. Do you remember where you were when you realized Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst) and her fellow Toros attended "Meat Ranch" (Rancho Carne) High? Despite the sometmes over the top script and some dialog that didn't age that gracefully, the movie does tackle real issues like cultural appropriation and racial inequality. And despite the scripts liberal use of the f-slur (it was a different time!), we must say representation matters and seeing a (somewhat) out, gay high school male was a breath of fresh air way back in the year 2000. Our Kiki nails the comedy, as she already proved in Drop Dead Gorgeous and Dick (both 1999) and Jesse Bradford is almost too cute for words in his little band tee shirts. But the standout has and always will be Gabrielle Union as Isis, the Cheer Captain for the East Compton Clovers. She eats every scene she is in and when I tell you she has not aged a day! This movie may be pushing 23 years old but we still know all the words to every cheer and we are holding out for the Requel! 26 Jul 2024 | 246. Speed with special guest Adam J. Yeend | 01:58:11
“Miss, can you handle this bus? - Oh, sure. It's like driving a really big Pinto.” We watched our favorite 90s action movie Speed, with our favorite 90s hunk Keanu Reeves this week on the podcast with our friend Adam J. Yeend. All of the greats are turning 30 this year (Interview with the Vampire, the Lion King, True Lies, and this Jan DeBont action classique is one of them. To say ‘They don’t make ‘em like they used to’ is an understatement. Sure a lot of boys growing up wanted to be Jack Craven (Reeves), the beefcake police officer saving citizens from terrorists, but we always wanted to be Annie (Sandra Bullock) behind the wheel of the bus. We fell in love with Keanu and Sandy here, and still has some of the most intense action films ever committed to film. We discuss the iconic supporting cast that includes Dennis Hopper’s insane performance, Jeff Daniels in side-kick mode, and MTMUG treasure Beth Grant. Buckle up cause this episode is High Octane! 03 Aug 2024 | Episode Rewind: Ghost World Directed by Terry Zwigoff | 01:36:15
We're blowing off the dust on one of our favorite episodes, and revisting Terry Zwigoff's Ghost World. Originally posted as Movies That Made Us Gay Episode 66 on Sep 25, 2020 - we had to dig WAY back in the archives for this one. We were still baby podcasters back then but this episode is still just as fresh after all these years. We'll be back with a new episode next friday, but until then let's take a trip back to Season 2 of Movies That Made Us Gay! "If you like authentic blues you really gotta check out Blues Hammer." We watched Ghost World (2001) and no we don't want a biscotti with that. If you ever want a peek behind the veil of Scott and Pete's inner (and outer) monologue - look no further than this movie. We too can't relate to 99% of humanity and mostly want to poison rude customers. Since poisoning is out of the question, we simply troll them under our breath like our heroes Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson). While we're nowhere near as upfront as Enid or dry as Rebecca, we feel we've modeled a decent part of our wit off of these two fringe dwelling icons. Much like Enid, we too "just like Don Knotts."

10 Jun 2022 | 150. The Doom Generation with special guest Rudy Bleu | 01:36:05
We made it to episode 150, and we finally got to the long awaited “Heterosexual Movie by Gregg Araki”, The Doom Generation with our friend Rudy Bleu. The anti-Clueless, this movie was every alternative young person’s bible. Following two troubled teen lovers (James Duval and Rose McGowan) who pick up a mysterious drifter named Xavier (Jonathan Schaech) and run wild through the slums of the San Fernando Valley. The Doom Generation is quintessential 90s viewings. We talk about the sexual charge of Jonathan Schaech’s eyebrows, James Duval’s puppy dog delivery, the wild celebrity cameos by the likes of Eve Plumb, Amanda Bearse, Heidi Fleiss, and how iconic Rose McGowan is in that black bob. Grab some Doritos, and queue of your favorite industral track. It's the Doom Generation!

14 Jun 2024 | 240. Joy Ride with special guest Michael Morgan | 01:54:43
“Candy Cane? Hey anybody know a Candy Cane?” We watched “Joy Ride” (2001) with the hilarious Michael Morgan and we’re still brushing up on our CB lingo. This little gem of a movie from 2001 fits nicely into that category of unintentionally homoerotic films from the early aughts. Obviously, Paul Walker (RIP) is serving your friendly neighborhood Abercrombie & Fitch employee that stood outside the store, possibly shirtless, definitely way too hot to ever speak to in person, but we would be remiss to leave out or guy Steve Zahn. All three of us have in our notes how cute Steve Zahn is in this movie - even with his dad-chic tucked in shirts and light washed, relaxed fit denim. We buy them as estranged brothers on a road trip to pick up Lewis’s (Paul Walker) crush? Girlfriend? FWB? Whoever she is her name is “Venna” and she’s played by the stoic - and since retired - Leelee Sobieski. Don’t ask us why, but if you were a fan of Leelee’s work around this time - you’re gay now. On this road trip across the American west, the boys play a prank on a trucker via their newly installed CB radio and all hell breaks loose. This movie has many rewind-able moments for little gay boys including Paul and Steve’s buns on full display and Paul giving us his best lady voice over the CB, impersonating the fictitious “Candy Cane”. The scary trucker hell-bent on revenge is named “Rusty Nail” and the voice is provided by none other than “Buffalo Bill” himself, Ted Levine. It doesn’t get anymore queer coded than that.

26 Feb 2021 | 88. Party Girl with special guest Bright Light Bright Light | 01:28:05
Your mother was a woman with no common sense! We watched Party Girl (1995) with Bright Light Bright Light and we want a career in library science! Parker Posey is iconic as our hero Mary. A killer wardrobe, a perfect party apartment and connections in mid-90's NYC nightlife - she is our spirit animal. OK, she needs to work on the casual racism, shoplifting and narcissism - but every hero needs an arc. Mary's world is filled with club kids, DJs, drag queens and insanely hot street vendors. 25 Sep 2020 | 66. Ghost World | 01:35:44
If you like authentic blues you really gotta check out Blues Hammer. We watched Ghost World (2001) and no we don't want a biscotti with that. Much like Enid, we too "just like Don Knotts." 29 Sep 2023 | 210. My Own Private Idaho with special guest Marlene Stang | 01:44:11
"This road never ends. It probably goes all around the world." We talk about the lost boys of the Pacific Northwest, and finally get to Gus Van Sant's "My Own Private Idaho" with our friend Marlene Stang. This movie was formative to all three of us, but we also take a deep dive into our thoughts on River Phoenix and what his work meant to us as young people. River's performance as a narcoleptic gay street hustler on a quest to find his lost family really hit us in the feels upon this latest re-watch. Not to get too existential, but as we age we're relating to these kids a bit differently than when we first watched in our early teens. That street life is looking less romantic, and more chaotic these days. But it's really River and Keanu's performances as our two leads that stuck out then and hold up to this day - the pathos in the famous campfire scene is heartwrenching. We already knew River was a powerhouse actor in his short time with us, but Keanu really holds his own in their scenes together. "Whoa" indeed. This film may take a few detours with its Shakespearean dialogue that comes and goes and some truly dark turns here and there, but Gus Van Sant was really out here in these streets making a touching, often gritty, queer love story in the early '90s. We can't help but to Stan. 20 Aug 2021 | 113. Thelma & Louise with special guest Joshua Clement | 01:41:54
“Well, darlin’, look out, cause my hair is comin’ down!” We watched Thelma & Louise (1991) with our friend and special Oscars correspondent Joshua Clement and we’d risk it all for a night with early 90’s Brad Pitt any day. We really get into the lore behind the making of this quintessentially American movie. From on-set spontaneous country line-dancing, to the long road to casting Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. Ultimately it had to be those two - but could you see Meryl and Goldie hitting the road and raising hell? Susan and Geena went on to receive dual Academy Award nominations for Best Actress but it was another Southern spitfire who took the gold that year… but that conversation is for another episode (perhaps over some fava beans). Oscar wins or no, Thelma & Louise will be remembered for stunning lead performances, a controversial ending and bestowing Brad Pitt’s 8 pack abs unto humanity. 24 Mar 2023 | 184. Polyester with special guest Drew Droege | 01:45:40
"I look into my future and all I see is a long, dark hallway... and no exits." We watched Polyester (1981) with the hilarious Drew Droege and we're ready to eat an entire cake in one sitting. The legendary John Waters takes us on a melodramatic trip through the suburbs by way of the famous "Women's Pictures" directed by Douglas Sirk. We take a peek behind the velvet curtains and French Provincial decor of the 'burbs with Divine, who gives a stellar performance as Francine Fishpaw, the put upon wife of a filandering pornographer, mother of juvenile delinquents and daughter of a social climbing snob. Francine's oversensitive nose plays a key role in her already fragile mental state and the gimmick of Odorama was developed for the original screenings. Where else but a John Waters picture could you get a scratch-and-sniff card with such fragrances as Roses, Flatulence, Gasoline and New car smell? Polyester may have been Waters' first foray into "mainstream cinema" but all his usuals are there; Mink Stole as the sass-mouth other woman, Edith Massey as Francine's nouveau riche former housekeeper, and Jean Hill as a tire biting gospel singer. We can't forget the absolute dreamboat Tab Hunter as sleazy lothario Todd Tomorrow. Polyester is as tacky as late '70s/early '80s houshold decor and we can't get enough of it. Watch out! It's the Baltimore Footstomper!! 20 Dec 2024 | 266. Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas with special guest Jessica Delgadillo | 01:59:41
“It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes, or bags.” It’s our official Christmas week episode, and what better way to get into the holiday season than to watch the millennial favorite Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, directed by Ron Howard, with our friend Jessica Delgadillo. We aren’t saying this movie doesn’t have its problems, but there’s just something about it that gives us the Christmasy feels and keep us coming back to it every year. Is it maybe the funniest Jim Carrey has ever been? Seriously, it's like bizarre performance art. Is Christine Baranski’s Martha May Whovier too fierce for words? Yes, to both. An impossible task of turning a 64-page children’s book into a nearly two-hour movie, Ron Howard's film is like tearing into colorful presents under the tree. A fun, but messy, good time. We gush about Jim Carrey’s insane character work and talk about some of the wild behind-the-scenes stories. Some of which involve CIA torture endurance to help Jim cope with the head-to-toe Rick Baker Oscar-winning makeup. We also dive into the possible queer coding of the Grinch. There might be reasons why the Grinch has a crush on the dragiest Whoville girl in town. Welcome, Christmas. While we stand. Heart to heart… and hand in hand. 11 Feb 2022 | 134. Romeo + Juliet with special guest Espie Quintero | 01:51:06
Two houses, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona, where we lay our scene. We watched William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996) with our friend Espie Quintero and "A Plague on both your houses!" Aesthetically gifted Australian director Baz Luhrmann gifted unto the 1990's this perfect chocolate box of a movie for "The MTV generation." We were just learning about this wunderkind actor Leonardo DiCaprio when this movie exploded into theaters (and our loins) and the rest is history. Romeo and Juliet was standard reading in high school and 90's teens rejoiced when we found out it was getting "updated" with the dreamboat from "The Basketball Diaries" and Angela Chase herself - Claire Danes from "My So-Called Life!" Our little queer hearts (and our loins) burst. The cast absolutely crushes it, the soundtrack is killer and the costumes still make us swoon. This movie is nearly untouched by time and we are so stoked to be talking about it. 03 Jan 2020 | 33. Blue Lagoon with special guest Braden Davis | 01:31:46
We made it through a whole season of gay as hell movies and our finale is a doozy! We’re joined by the very funny Braden Davis so watch the 1980 classic Blue Lagoon. You guys, this movie is bananas! If you’re not familiar with this movie - I’ll sum it up in 2 words: Full. Frontal. Two beautiful teens are marooned on a tropical island and much male nudity ensues. We tell tales of watching this movie as kids surrounded by our family and definitely feeling some type of way. Brooke Shields is lovely as always but Christopher Atkins - no words. 15 Apr 2022 | 143. Labyrinth with special guest Jared Anderson | 01:42:39
“Turn Back, Sarah. Turn back before it’s too late.” We watched Labyrinth (1986) with our good-Judy Jared Anderson and we wish the Goblin King would come and take you away… right now. Sixteen-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelley) faces off against Jareth the Goblin King (David Bowie) and a generation’s sexual awakening began. Bowie is giving androgynous ren-faire realness and Connelley is giving ethereal drama-kid/teen model. And you can trust and believe we get into that cod-piece. Is it icky that the Goblin King is so actively seducing this young girl? A little, but it’s all fantasy and (spoiler alert) Sarah finds her way back to her kick ass bedroom in her dad and stepmoms sweet Victorian house in Portland. The puppet work by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop will transport you to another world, the costumes will make you want to head over to Party City right now, and the MUSIC! Don’t get us started on the soundtrack by David Bowie. It’s FIRE. Grab a cold mug of mead, break out your tights and lets get theatrical! 30 Jul 2021 | 110. My Best Friend's Wedding with special guest Blake Knight | 01:37:46
She's got exactly four days to break up a wedding and steal the brides fella. We watched My Best Friend's Wedding (1997) with our friend Blake Knight and we suddenly have the urge to spontaneously break out into song. Hot off the heals of a gothic retread of "Frankenstein from the maid's point of view" and that musical Woody Allen movie, America's sweetheart Julia Roberts needed a hit - and boy did this movie deliver. On paper Julia is clearly the villain but she's just so stinkin' cute we give her a pass. Dermot Mulroney is adorable as the titular best friend and our girl Cammie Diaz just steals our hearts as the flighty fiancé we know we should root against, but we can't help but fall in love with. Rupert Everett rounds out the cast as the GBF (long before the term was ever coined). The first in a string of late 90's hits for Julia. If you haven't seen it yet - check out this charming rom-com. This ahead of its time classic deals with issues like de-gayification camps, teen pregnancy and rigging the vote for prom queen. 22 Dec 2023 | 222. The Holiday with special guest Michael Morgan | 01:51:09
"You're supposed to be the leading lady in your own life, for God's sake!" We watched "The Holiday" (2006) with our friend Michael Morgan and we've got a rustic English cottage available if anyone wants to swap houses. Does this Christmas themed, Nancy Meyers directed rom-com really need to be over two full hours? If you're into cottage-core and mid-aughts Jude Law then the answer is a resounding YES. Maybe this movie is a bit over-long, but our four leads Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jack Black and Law are charming and Meyers gifted us with a movie house we've been lusting after since we first laid eyes on it. Kate Winslet's Iris lives at the fictional "Rosehill Cottage" and not since "Practical Magic" have we been so enthralled by a fictional location, even though this one looks like it sprung from the mind of Thomas Kinkade. The premise of The Holiday might stretch our abililty to suspend our disbelief but we don't care! This movie is a comfort watch and we'll carve out that 2 hours and 16 minutes every year to get carried away to sprint through the English countryside (in stilettos) with Cam and Jude and bask in the warm Santa Ana winds of Los Angeles with Kate and Jack. There's got to be a morning after! We watched The Poseidon Adventure (1972) with the Legendary Miss Jackie Beat and in the water we're very skinny ladies. The 70's were all about Disaster Movies and this one takes the cake. Filled with 70's fashions, over the top acting from some Hollywood legends and a hit song, this movie is a template producers follow to this day. 07 Jun 2024 | 239. Volver with special guest Sandra Espinoza | 01:48:31
“Don’t say that, Raimunda, or I’ll start crying. And ghosts don’t cry.” We watched “Volver” (2006) directed by iconic Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar and excuse us, we need to go call our mothers. Penélope Cruz plays Raimunda - a mother who does what needs to be done to protect her daughter in a time of dire need. When the ghost of Raimunda’s mother shows up with some unfinished business, Raimunda, her daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo) and her sister Sole (Lola Dueñas) are all able to come to terms with some major family issues. Almodóvar directs these women in a way that only he can - showing this inter-generational story with all the weight and humor we really encounter in life. We talk about Almodóvar’s reunion with actress Carmen Maura (of previous MTMUG episode “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), the heartbreaking beauty of Spain and how the “dressed down” Penélope Cruz is more beautiful than any of us even on our best day. 08 Sep 2023 | 207. Women one the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown with special guest Jose Gallegos | 01:40:21
"No lady is dangerous if you know how to handle her." It's the long awaited Pedro Almodóvar movie on the podcast, and there's no other place to start but with his breakout Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown from 1988. We welcome Jose Gallegos - expert in all things Almodóvar to discuss the intricacies of this icon of Spanish Cinema. The plot is almost too dense to water down into a description, but Almodóvar films are all about vibes - and this movie is a vibe. The color pallete is filled with signature bright primary colors and the set design is over the top and bordeline cartoonish - yet it's that artifice that gives this film its memorable aura. The comedy of errors and manners throughout becomes so manic that its quieter moments really spotlight the acting and the tightly written script. Frequent Almodóvar collaborator Carmen Maura delivers a memorable performance, but we can't get baby Antonio Banderas out of our heads. Don't worry, we didnt forget about Rossy de Palma serving face, fashion and attitude. From neurotic best friends, terrorist attacks, metnal institutions and spiked gazpacho - it's enough to make anyone have a nervous breakdown. 05 Mar 2021 | 89. The Parent Trap with special guest Rufino Cabang | 01:31:06
We watched The Parent Trap (1961) with our friend Rufino Cabang and we're seeing double! We're not saying the original classic from the 60's is superior to the remake 90's remake but... ok yes we are. It's better. Haley Mills is delightful as twins separated by their selfish... I mean misguided recently divorced parents. How this cockamamie plan got past family court is a mystery but it makes for an amazing movie. It's got everything; split-screen movie magic, fabulous mid-century modern ranch style homes and a swinging soundtrack featuring Disney mainstay Annette Funicello. 21 Jun 2024 | 241. Mrs. Doubtfire with special guest Joshua Clement | 01:39:39
“Oh... as I hold this cold meat, I'm reminded of Winston. God rest his soul.” We watched “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993) with MTMUG All Star Joshua Clement and we don’t do laundry, we don’t do windows and we DON’T do diapers. Listen, it’s been 30 years since this family comedy was released and our ideas about gender identity and expression have come a long way. That being said, we firmly believe Robin Williams did not have a malicious bone in his body or thought in his heart when he committed Euphegenia Doubtfire to film. The queer sensibilities are rife throughout Daniel Hillard’s (Williams) journey to become the matronly Mrs. Doubtfire in order to spend more time with his kids. From his gay brother Frank, played by icon Harvey Fierstein, to Robin’s manic (and still hilarious) performance channeling Mrs. Doubtfire. As time goes by, we are finding ourselves understanding Miranda (Sally Field) a bit more - that pony was INSIDE the house! Don’t get us started on Pierce Brosnan serving up body in the pool scene - we’ll be rewinding that one, thank you very much. We also love (and grew up with) the Hillard children played by Lisa Jakub, Matthew Lawrence and little bitty Mara Wilson. This cast is perfect, the jokes still hold up and Robin, as always, serves up a master class in comedy. 23 Jul 2021 | 109. Jumpin' Jack Flash with special guest Ben Cheaves | 01:25:02
I’m a little black woman, in a big silver box! We watched Jumpin’ Jack Flash (1986) with our friend Ben Cheaves and we still can’t understand a thing Mick Jagger is singing. Whoopi Goldberg as Terry Doolittle is iconic. Her apartment, her workspace and her wardrobe are all #GOALS. Suffice it to say - we still want to be Terry when we grow up. She hates her boss, she’s quick with a comeback and she can hold her own against KGB goons - she’s just like us! Now we just need to perfect our Diana Ross lip sync for our lives. The Cold War era espionage and pre-AIM instant messaging may date the movie but we don’t care! After all the cloak and dagger shenanigans is Jonathan Pryce a bit of a boobie prize? Was young Jon Lovitz sort of a cutie? Did Terry get a reward for extraditing a government agent? Find out in this weeks episode of Movies That Made Us Gay! 16 Aug 2024 | 248. A Room With A View with special guest Rufino Cabang | 01:41:23
“Don't you agree that, on one's first visit to Florence, one must have a room with a view?” We watched the Merchant Ivory 1985 classic "A Room with a View" with our friend Rufino Cabang and excuse us as we faint in the arms of Julian Sands. Breaking American audiences to actors like Helena Bonham Carter, Julian Sands, Daniel Day Lewis, and Rupert Graves this movie was a huge cross over success in American that was nominated for eight Academy Awards, and won for its adaptation for the screen by Ruth Prater Jhabvala. 20 year-old Helena looks like a porcelain doll, swoon worthy men, and Maggie Smith is also here to talk some hot goss with Judi Dench. What more could you want in a costume drama! Also, the perfect cover for a movie to rent for young gay boys across the world, that features a famous skinny dipping scene with Julian Sands, Rupert Graves, and Simon Callow stripping down to their birthday suits for a dip. "A Room with a View" helped usher in the success of movies like Maurice, Remains of the Day, and Howard’s End much to excitement of English Lit nerds, and all the boys who were "a joy to have in class." 22 Sep 2023 | 209. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with special guest Nikolas Romero | 01:28:53
“To repress one's feelings only makes them stronger.” We watched Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" with our friend Nikolas Romero this week and our backs hurt just watching these stunts. Suffice it to say that we've been obsessed with Michelle Yeoh for over two decades and this movie is a huge reason why. She's been having a moment with her Best Actress Oscar win, but we've been on board this whole time. Chow Yun-Fat may be playing the greatest swordsman in China but its Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang's characters who walk away with the entire movie. Jen (Zhang) and Shu Lien (Yeoh) are really schooling us on gender roles in traditional society and their fight scenes are some of best we've seen. We also live for Jen's scorned master Jade Fox (Pei Pei Cheng), flying in and out of fight scenes like a wicked witch. Martial Arts movies may traidionally be a male dominated genre, but Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon shows it doesn't have to be that way. 09 Oct 2020 | 68. Halloween with special guest Matt Emert | 01:29:12
Isn’t that Devon Graham? I think he’s cute! We watched Halloween (1978) with our friend and MTMUG all star Matt Emert and we hate a guy with a car and no sense of humor. This is the mother of all slasher movies (we see you Black Christmas) and our guest Matt is an aficionado of all things Haddonfield. This is a horror movie for people who LOVE the genre - we defy you to count the Psycho references sprinkled in by legendary director John Carpenter (who also composed one of the creepiest movie scores in history). Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) has become the template for the “final girl” and her horny friends gave way to the basic “Scream” rules to survive a horror film (never have sex, drink or do drugs or say “I’ll be right back”). We're right on top of that Rose! Scott and Pete sat down with the very funny #friendofthepod Mark Rosenberg (This Made Me Think of You - available on Amazon) and watched Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead! This movie has everything a little gay boy could ask for - tricking adults into thinking you're older, drag queens boosting a car and teenage Josh Charles (swoon). Sue Ellen (Christina Applegate) may be in over her head at General Apparel West but the general apparel in her closet is everything! Throw in some lip sync worthy performances by Joanna Cassidy as "Swell's" all too accommodating boss Rose and Jayne Brook's perfectly evil receptionist Carolyn (PER-SO-NNELL) and this movie has the makings of every baby-gay's top ten list. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford are at the top of their game giving us high camp and we're loving every minute of it. Davis and Crawfords capitalize on their feud to create this horror masterpiece that spawned some of the shadiest subgenre names in cinema history. 21 Jul 2023 | Episode 200: 9 to 5 with Special Guest Helen Ellis | 01:45:40
Take a hit of that Maui Wowie, and pour yourself a cup on ambition, because we made it to 200! We invited over author Helen Ellis (American Housewife, Kiss Me In the Coral Lounge) to celebrate the occasion, and watched 9-5! Staring the dynmatic trio Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton it's one of the most beloved feminst texts of cinema history. Delivering major laughs, and biting social commentary, these three ladies are our Avengers of the 1980s. We talk about the pussy bow situation on Jane, Lily's pitch perfect comedic timing, and how Dolly knocks this debut performance out of the park. Seriously, some of Dolly's lines still have us cackling. Dolly saying, "Could you come back her for a second?", or her hog tying Dabney Coleman, are chef's kiss perfection. We talk about the incredibly satisfying set ups and pay offs of Patrica Resnick and Colin Higgins's script, and what has and hasn't changed about this tale of workplace revenge. 11 Apr 2025 | 276. Josie and the Pussycats with special guest Jessica Granger | 01:41:07
"Du Jour means seat belts. Du Jour means crash positions!" We get to an early 00s cult classic in kitten ears, "Josie and the Pussycats", this week with our friend Jessica Granger. Critics didn't really know what to do with this razor-sharp satire of the music industry and consumerism when it came out back in 2001, but we're here to say this movie still holds up. We discuss all three of our Pussycats: Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, and Rosario Dawson, early aughts MTV and the stranglehold TRL had on the youth. Not to mention the duo of villains played by the iconic Alan Cumming and Parker Posey, as well as its banger of a soundtrack with some major street cred behind some of the songs. 09 Nov 2019 | 26. The Object Of My Affection with special guest Michael Morgan | 01:12:10
Paul Rudd is forever BAE, even when he’s playing a dull gay kindergarten teacher. We’re joined by MTMUG All Star Michael Morgan to watch The Object Of My Affection (1998). Bored social worker Nina (Jennifer Aniston) falls for her equally boring GBF George (Rudd). Nina gets knocked up by her boring boyfriend but wants to raise the baby with George cause she's still thirsty for that forbidden D. Steve Zahn is playing against type (straight), Allison Janney is also there chewing up the scenery and Audra McDonald is slumming it as a wedding singer. It’s episode 26 of Movies That Made Us Gay! 03 Sep 2021 | 115. Fight Club with special guest Drew Stanley | 01:33:59
“I want brain parasites.” We watched Fight Club (1999) with our friend Drew Stanley and we want you to hit us as hard as you can. It’s our TENTH movie from 1999 which just proves it really was the best movie year ever. Not to worry - we don’t go too hard on the forensic analysis of this often misunderstood movie. We do however touch on themes of toxic masculinity, hyper violence and the acid-goth-rave wardrobe of Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter. Director David Fincher’s ahead of their time visuals were immediately ripped off, firmly placing the visual style of the movie into pop culture history. Ok we get it - how could a movie about a group of shirtless men meeting in a dark basement to pound the living hell out each other possibly have gay undertones? Oh wait. 03 May 2024 | 234. After Hours with special guest Ben Cheaves | 01:56:06
"What do you want from me? What have I done? I'm just a word processor, for Christ sake!" We watched "After Hours" from 1985 with our friend Ben Cheaves and we gotta run if we're gonna make the last train home! Manhattan yuppie Paul - played by the brilliantly neurotic (and tragically cute) Griffin Dunne - in a seemingly neverending quest to get himself some tail (it's Rosanna Arquette - we get it) gets stuck across town with no cash and it's 1985 so he's royally up the creek. On his way home he meets edgy downtown arists who dabble in S&M, a bored waitress with a vengeful streak, a couple of leather daddies having their way with each other and a "quirky" ice cream truck driver. The Manhattan Soho portrayed in this movie no longer exists but it's shown in a such a surreal yet starkly realistic way - you feel like you're with poor poor Paul on his adventures getting picked up by trade who has second thoughts and even when he's being hunted down by an agry mob lead by Ice Cream truck girl (played by a young Catherine O'Hara). Some people long for days gone by and simpler times like the 80's and 90's but poor Paul's strange journey through Manhattan just to meet up with a girl, really makes you appreciate the little things like... touchless payment methods, ride sharing apps and swiping right. "I said I wanna see a Plaster of Paris bagel and cream cheese paperweight, now cough it up." 26 Jan 2020 | 34. Bonus Episode - Pilot - Cruel Intentions | 01:03:38
It’s our first bonus episode! We dug up our experiment pilot to see if this project would even work. Spoiler Alert - it worked - so we dusted off this gem for your listening pleasure. We watched Cruel Intentions from 1999 and we’re still obsessed with Ryan Phillippe’s buns. Sarah Michelle Gellar is serving up some fierce be-otch realness and we discuss the legend of production hiding Reese’s pieces (was she really knocked up during production?). 20 Sep 2019 | 19. Yentl with special guest Matt Emert | 01:29:33
It's our first foray into Barbra territory and Matt Emert (@mattybrooks116) was our guide as we navigated our way through Yentl (1983). Not only our introduction to Babs on film but more importantly - Mandy Patinkin's heinie. Barbra herself starred, directed and produced this "film with music" about a Jewish girl who disguises herself as a boy to enter religious training. Along the way Yentl meets and falls for the super-fine Avigdor (Patinkin), MARRIES the naive Haddas (Amy Irving) and talk-sings (but somehow still belts) her way through every song on the soundtrack. Through it all Yentl somehow manages to keep her secret while I would have risked it all after that infamous skinny dipping adventure. It's episode 19 of Movies That Made Us Gay! 11 Mar 2022 | 138. Thirteen with special guest Donovan Marcotte | 01:34:31
“Mothers, lock up your sons!” We watched Thirteen (2003) with our friend Donovan Marcotte and we’re still clutching our pearls. Your wanna feel like a granny, out of touch with the kids these days? Watch this movie. Catherine Hardwicke directed this groundbreaking indie from a script she co-wrote with then teenage Nikki Reed (The Twilight Saga). Evan Rachel Wood and Reed play best friends wrapped up in the unparalleled drama of teenage friendship - where every decision you made was life or death. And some of these outfits are to die for. We’re talking early Avril Lavigne levels of safety pins, cutouts and stripes. Holly Hunter knocks it out of the park (per usual) as Wood’s put upon mom and Jeremy Sisto is dreamy as ever. We must be getting old - we’re rooting for the parents and just want to shake these girls and tell em to SNAP OUT OF IT! 08 Mar 2023 | Bonus Episode: Oscar 2023 with special guest Harper Thomson | 01:02:37
The Oscars are Sunday, and we sat down after our Black Swan recording to talk about this year's nominees with friend of the pod Harper Thomson. Does Everything Everywhere All At Once have the major categories in the bag? Is Austin Butler secretly the front runner in the photo finish Best Actor race? Who exactly is going to win supporting actress here? Will Angela Bassett win for an MCU movie? Or will Jamie Lee Curtis or Kerry Condon swoop in after their SAG and BAFTA wins? We talk about all these, plus the below the line categories. Warning on episode: This was recorded in two sittings, so that would be why our some thoughts on categories have changed towards end of the episode.
04 Dec 2020 | 76. Titanic with special guest Jennifer Mrazek | 01:40:12
We have achieved Leo Mania. Officially! We watched Titanic (1997) with our friend Jennifer Mrazek and we promise to never let go! Do you remember where you were when you first saw Titanic? We do - all 15 times between us. We reminisce about this James Cameron directed classic that united the world. Sold out lines around the block, a theme song (and video) that still holds up - even an Oprah special! Titanic was THE movie of 1997 and Leo may have hooked these queers into the theater but the costumes, the wigs and our Queen Kate Winslet made us forever Stans. 30 Aug 2019 | 16. Big Business with special guest Carla Yacenda | 01:27:41
Scott and Pete welcome the lovely Carla Yacenda to discuss the Bette Midler, Lily Tomlin 1980’s classic Big Business and we’re all seeing double! Highfalutin Rose and Sadie Shelton are scheming to strip mine Jupiter Hollow while hay-seeds Rose and Sadie Ratliff are on a crusade to save their town. Hijinks ensue including mistaken identity, sexual espionage and a yodeling Bette Midler. This movie has everything a little gay boy wants in life - impeccably dressed powerful women, gaudy dressed funny women, obvious gay characters who’s sexuality totally went over our heads, luxury hotels, the (false) idea of making hundreds of dollars for getting good grades and MTMUG all-star Mary Gross. 24 Sep 2021 | 118. Sleeping Beauty with special guest Devin Lotfi | 01:31:02
"You're living in the past, this is the 14th century." We watched Sleeping Beauty (1959) with our friend Devin Lotfi (I Don't Want To Hear That! Podcast) and we could use some beauty sleep. The last of the Disney Classic fairy tales - until The Little Mermaid was released 30 years later. Nothing comes close to Eleanor Audley's ICONIC performance as Maleficent. We all can agree the Mistress of Evil has got some style! I mean who hasn't let their petty side come out after realizing you weren't invited to the party? Princess Aurora is serving some 1950's Barbie proportions and Prince Phillip is BAE! I mean he fought off all the powers of HELL!! 19 Jul 2024 | 245. The House Bunny with special guest Justin Allison | 01:50:51
"Instead of the Mahi-Mahi, can I get just one Mahi, because I'm not that hungry?" We watched "The House Bunny", from 2008, with our friend Justin Allison and we want to pledge Zeta! The early aughts were a time the Playboy brand was definitely having a moment and Anna Faris and the filmmakers really capitalized on the wave Hef and the bunnies were riding. Mall stores were marketing the bunny to children, "The Girls Next Door" were riding high on E! and "The House Bunny" had us cackling. We may take a few detours to remember Holly, Bridget and Kendra, but we promise it's all to serve our conversation of this movie. Anna Faris herself channeled Bridget's look (and some mannerisms) in her portrayel of Shelley, the down on her luck Playmate in search of meaning in her life. Anna sets the comedic bar very high in this one and everyone in this cast is really pulling off the comedy. Early outings from double oscar winner Emma Stone and Kat Dennings really show off their comedic talents and all the Zetas are so much fun to watch. The gang at Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions really pull off a "girl's comedy" without punching down - which is refreshing coming from such a bro-centric group. You can tell they were really just about finding the funny and for us - they found it. "The House Bunny" is utterly quoteable to this day and Anna Faris deserves all of her flowers for this killer performance. 15 Mar 2024 | 227. Splash Directed by Ron Howard | 01:57:13
"How is she? She's... she's a *mermaid*! I don't understand. All my life, I've been waiting for someone, and when I find her, she's a fish." We watched "Splash"(1984) directed by Ron Howard and we wish, we wish, we wish we were a fish. Tom Hanks really earns his reputation as the "everyman" in this movie and his chemistry with the ethereal Daryl Hannah is off the charts. They just don't make fantasy movies like they did in the '80s. The script is still funny as hell with Hanks and John Candy playing so well off each other as brothers and Hannah's Madison stealing every scene she's in. At times it really plays like a live action updated Little Mermaid but some of the best moments come from what the script doesnt tell us. Did Madison make a deal with a Sea Witch to get her legs? Will Allen get a tail if stays with Madison? Did the events in Freddie's letters to Penthouse Forum really happen? Ron Howard trusted the audience to fill in the blanks and Splash is a better movie for it. And by the way - Disey+ removed the weird CGI hair extensions so we can marvel at Daryl's bum - as Ron always intended. 08 Apr 2022 | 142. Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael with special guest Michael Morgan | 01:22:25
“That was a thirty-two dollar sweater, missy, and you dyed it black, didn’t you?” We watched Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael (1990) with the always outrageous Michael Morgan and I could use an Almond Roca. Gen-X Queen Winona Ryder is at it again, this time playing strange and unusual all-black-wearing loner Dinkey Bossetti. Dinky is obsessed with the cute boy in her class, feeding stray animals and the town legend, the mysterious Roxy Carmichael. We never picked up on the Sapphic under (and over) tones in this movie until this watching, but man - this movie is gay! From the Melissa Etheridge soundtrack, the over-sexed townies waking up to post coital brunch, and don’t get us started on the guidance counselor. Are the fleeting images of Roxy in her L.A. manse all in Dinky’s head? And if they are - why is she always naked?! And most importantly, we answer the age old question - is Jeff Daniels hot? 23 Oct 2020 | 70. Practical Magic with special guest Allison Levitan | 01:40:01
Hang on to your husbands, girls! We watched Practical Magic (1998) with our friend Allison Levitan and the nudity is entirely optional, as you well remember! This movie has more wicked witchery than Stevie Nicks - and she’s heavily featured on the soundtrack. Sandy (Bullock) and Nic (Kidman) are serving major lewks as the bewitching Owens sisters and Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing are giving us major Agnes Moorhead as Endora vibes as their wacky aunts. Tonal issues aside, this movie is a ton of fun and we forever Stan Sandy playing a no-nonsense empowered woman and Nic playing a flighty waif in an auburn wig. 15 Dec 2023 | 221. Female Trouble with special guest Seth Shubin | 01:30:05
We watched John Waters' magnum opus "Female Trouble" and there's gonna be hell to pay if we don't get them cha-cha heels! John Waters is being hailed as the Pope of Trash and if you weren't sure why, go watch this movie. Dawn Davenport (Divine) is a thief and a sh!t kicker and she wants to be famous. I mean did this movie predict social media fame culture? Dawn as played by John's muse Divine is the ultimate bad girl and we as the audience get to track her journey from surley school girl to working single mom and finally to the worlds most glamorous criminal. Don't worry though, Dawn gets hers and goodness prevails in the end. Along for the ride are the usual Dreamland favorites, Mink Stole, David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pierce and of course Aunt Ida herself the incomprable Edith Massey. Aunt Ida was the first voice ever heard on this podcast and we couldn't have said it better ourselves... "The world of othe heterosexual is a sick and boring life." 12 Jul 2024 | 244. The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy directed by Greg Berlanti | 01:43:29
"I can't decide if my freinds are the best or worst thing that ever happened to me". We watched "The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy" written and directed by Greg Berlanti and we've got some gay stereotypes to squash! Whelp it's taken us this long to finally get to this one. When did we get to the point where a movie from the year 2000 is considered a period piece? Aside from feeling personally attacked by that little tidbit, the fierce fashions in this movie were absolutely sending us. Let's just say those polyester shirts looked very... flame retardant. Millers Outpost shopping spree aside, this film means a lot to gay men of a certain age. Representation matters and seeing a (somewhat) realistic protrayal of gay men in their twenties, riddled with anxiety, self doubt and all the other little things that make us just... regular people, was such a breath of fresh air. Listen, maybe everyone in this movie is a heart-throb (ahem - Timothy Olyphant?!) but at least there was no clichéd coming out story, sassy GBF or "Noble Gay" dealing with the horrors of HIV. We got as close to a gay version of "Friends" as we could for 2000. Maybe some of the dialogue is a little heavy handed but writer/director Greg Berlanti was 28 when he made this movie! At that age I couldn't even balance a checkbook! We as gay people, we get to choose our gay movies we turn into a personality trait. 16 Jul 2021 | 108. Can't Stop the Music with special guest Jackson Cooper | 01:48:40
It’s like Spice World for the Village People. We watched Can’t Stop the Music (1980) with our friend Jackson Cooper and we want to stay at the YMCA! Producer Allan Carr was at the top of his game after the success of Grease (1978) and the next story bursting forth was the pseudo-biography of disco’s greatest novelty act - the Village People. This movie takes place in a theme park version of Manhattan where go-go boys roam the streets in a full Native American headdress, a man can roller skate down 5th avenue without being actively murdered and a leatherman can belt out “Danny Boy” standing on a piano and not be the weirdest thing in the room. The filmmakers missed the mark when they predicted disco to be the sound the 80’s would be remembered for, but they wisely called multi-million dollar marketing campaigns backed by big-milk. Can’t Stop the Music tops our list of “best worst movies” for its utter watchability - not to mention he full frontal male nudity in a PG movie. Come for Steve Guttenberg looking like a whole a$s snack, stay for the Village People serving the whole meal! 02 Oct 2020 | 67. Fright Night with Kevin and Chris from Homos on Haunted Hill | 01:32:47
We watched Fright Night (1985) with our friends Kevin Jones & Chris Moore but you may know them as the Homos on Haunted Hill. Apparently the filmmakers didn’t include the glaring queerness on purpose but the cast alone betrays its homo tendencies. Roddy McDowall, Amanda Bearse and future adult film star Stephen Geoffreys turn up the camp in this tale of a sexy vampire moving to the suburbs. William Ragsdale is cute but harmless as our hero Charley who is so enthralled by the sexy Jerry Dandrige (Chris Sarandon) he’s constantly fighting off his perfectly willing (and horny) girlfriend (Bearse). Geoffreys’ over the top performance as Evil Ed may have been intended as comic relief but his Bobcat Goldthwait on Four Loko delivery comes across somehow as charming. If you have a bootleg of the 1988 sequel, slide into our DMs. Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on iTunes! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna
14 Aug 2020 | 60. 54 with special guest Blake Knight | 01:33:33
93 minutes of late 90’s Ryan Phillippe wearing dolphin shorts and tube socks... where do we sign up?! We watched 54 (1998) with friend of the pod Blake Knight (A Gay in the Life) and you’re not listening to this episode with that shirt on. We take a deep dive into this semi-true story about the legendary 70’s disco Studio 54. Did club owner Steve Rubell (Mike Meyers) really have a “no-uggos” rule at the door? Absolutely. Were the real bartenders as hot as Ryan? Maybe. Were Greg (Breckin Meyer) and Anita (Salma Hayek) terribly mismatched? Definitely. We also examine the fabled Directors Cut featuring the steamy Ryan/Breckin kiss left on the cutting room floor. 22 Mar 2024 | 228. The Sound of Music with special guest Mitchell Anderson | 01:48:00
"What is it you can't face?" We watched "The Sound of Music" from 1965 with our friend Mitchell Anderson and we could never answer to a whistle! Whether you grew up in a "The Sound of Music" house, a "Mary Poppins" house, or both we all grew up with a song in our hearts thanks to the legendary, the one and only Dame Julie Andrews. Even if you (sadly) didn't come up watching this movie you most likely know ALL the songs - they're built into the fabric of our culture whether you like it or not. Was "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" in a shampoo commercial? Why exactly is "My Favorite Things" now suddently a Christmas song? Listen, theres a reason pop stars are giving up residuals to include samples of these songs - the music slaps and it will just make your music better (we're looking at you Gwen Stafani and Ariana Grande). Aside from Julie Andrews, AND the iconic music we are also here to talk about one miss Eleanor Parker as The Baroness. While Julie is serving humble beginnings and dresses evern the poor don't want, Eleanor Parker invented glamour and is forever the Queen of looks. Aboslutely no notes. This movie may be pushing three hours, but we don't care - it flies by. The last act might be a little uncomfortable to get through for modern audiences and we get it, but Christopher Plummer sees that flag hanging above his door, yanks it down and rips it to shreds with his bare hands. Icon. 19 May 2023 | 192: Selena with special guest Gabe Munoz | 01:36:27
"Anything for Selenas!" Break out the rhinestone bedazzled bustier bras, because we get into the biopic Selena (1997) with our friend and singer/songwriter Gabe Munoz. We talk about the Mexican American icon Selena Quintanilla and her legacy to Tejano and pop music, who died at the young age of 23, when she was on the rise to breakthrough to the mainstream. We get into the moviestar making performance of Jennifer Lopez who stepped into role of Selena. Controversal casting aside, a Puerte Rican American actresses playing the role of a Mexican American, Lopez embodies this role inside and out. The opening shot of Lopez wearing the famous purple jumpsuit walking into the Huston Astrodome still gives us chills. We don't even care she famously lipsyncs all the numbers, it's a star making performance. Lopez rises above a very mediocre script by its writer/director Gregory Nava (El Norte), and got a Golden Globe nomination in best actress in a comedy or musical. We talk about what Jennifer Lopez's career owes to Selena, our favorite stage looks, and what still draws young latinx people to the music of Selena. 29 Oct 2021 | 123. Rosemary's Baby with special guest Muffy Bolding | 01:55:51
"Witches... All of them witches!" We watched Rosemary's Baby (1968) with our friend the very funny Muffy Bolding and this is no dream - this is really happening! We're not saying we'd make a deal with the devil but a Pre-War 3 bedroom in The Bramford on Central Park West is nothing to scoff at. We always pictured ourselves as Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow); a wisp of a girl with the mod haircut and babydoll wardrobe. Then reality sets in and we realize we're more like Minnie Castevet, played by the incomparable Ruth Gordon, the busybody neighbor with no filter and zero F*cks given. 14 Jun 2019 | 6. Mannequin with Special Guest Millie De Chirico | 01:20:38
Scott and Pete are joined by the hilarious Millie De Chirico (Sordid Details) and there are major fangirl vibes. Together these afficionados of pop culture knowledge tackle the 1987 nutso comedy Mannequin. 26 Jun 2020 | 53. Encino Man with special guests Ashley and Handsome Joe from Keep It Weird | 01:59:09
We're not saying we wouldn't immediately bathe and shave an un-frozen caveman we found in our backyard - but if the end result was anywhere near early-90's Brendan Fraser, break out the shears! We watched Encino Man (1992) with MTMUG All Star Ashley Casseday from Keep It Weird (with an extra special guest appearance by Handsome Joe) and we're all Crazy for Fra-zee! Much like gay icon Missy Misdemeanor Elliott (allegedly), our memories of this movie put their thing down flipped it and reversed it. Turns out we heart Pauly Shore and Sean Astin is totes the villain of this movie. Don't worry your little queer heads, Brendan is still and always will be an Angel-face dream boat. Robin Tunney (The Craft, Empire Records) plays an amazingly trashy character who is horny for homo (erectus, that is) and Ke Huy Quan turns up for a mini Goonies reunion! 13 Nov 2020 | 73. Muriel's Wedding with special guest Devin Lotfi | 01:52:36
You're terrible Muriel. Or is it Mariel? We watched Muriel's Wedding (1994) with our friend Devin Lotfi (I Don't Want to Hear That Podcast) and our lives are just as good as an Abba song. Get ready to listen to some questionable Aussie accents as we recount this mid-90's gem that introduced the world to ICON Toni Collette. Muriel (Collette) yearns to leave her oppressive family, evil friends and and boring town of Porpoise Spit for the big city life in Sydney. She just happens to steal thousands to get there. Hey, if my mom handed me blank check to kick off my burgeoning MLM business I just might embezzle a grand or two to start a new life myself. Some of you might mis-remember this as a lighthearted comedy but we're here to tell you it gets dark - but only right before Muriel gets her happy ending. Indeed her life is just as good as Dancing Queen.
24 Feb 2023 | 180. The Devil Wears Prada with special guest Paul from That Aged Well | 01:43:22
"By all means move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me." We watched The Devil Wears Prada (2006) with our friend Paul from That Aged Well podcast and we need 10 or 15 skirts from Calvin Klein. Rigt NOW. We're not here to weigh the likeability of one miss Anne Hathaway. (We're her for her. Deal with it.) We are here to discuss Miranda Priestly as she is expertly inhabited by the incomparable Meryl Streep. Miranda may be the boss from hell but let's be real, we would all throw our grandma down the stairs for the opportunity to work for her. The fact that she would read us to filth on a daily basis is just a bonus. The movie may be giving us mixed messages about how it wants us to feel about Andy (Hathaway) and the choices she makes during her time at Runway magazine but we can all agree on one thing... her boyfriend and rotted friend group are the real villains. Let's be real here - we would have gotten out of the limo and stayed with Miranda in Paris. Oh and the supporting cast? Emily Blunt's garage door eye shadow is a serve and Stanley Tucci starts a career defining arc of the put upon second banana. Is he playing the actual twin brother of his character in Burlesque? This movie spawned a thousand memes and we quote it on the regular, proving once again - Meryl is gay rights. Thats all.
24 Nov 2023 | 218. A View to a Kill with special guest Garrett Mitchell | 01:48:37
"Wow! What a view!" "To a KILL!" We watched "A View to a Kill" with special guest Garrett Mitchell and this is now officially a Grace Jones appreciation podcast. With twenty five James Bond films to choose from, we thought long and hard about which one to cover here at MTMUG. Daniel Craig emerging from the sea like Ursula Andress before him in "Casino Royale" was hard to ignore, but the siren song of a platinum blonde Christopher Walken, the gorgeous "Sheena" herself Tanya Roberts and the ICON Grace Jones made "A View to a Kill" a no brainer. Walken's tech-bro villain has aspirations of monoplizing the Silicon Valley by way of a "double earthquake" and floods, but thats not why were here. Jones as the first ever hench-Woman May Day is serving looks, spouting quips and perfoming feats of strength that had us screaming "Mother!" every time she was on screen. Okay, we can talk about Roger Moore playing Bond for the Seventh(!) and final time. For 57 years young, Moore was still turning it out as Bond. He more than made up for a lack of chemistry with his leading Bond girl with some great scenes with Grace. And we can't forget the killer theme song by Duran Duran - pure 80's new wave radness! 26 Aug 2022 | 161. Jennifer's Body with special guest Lauren Ogle | 01:41:42
"Hell is a teenage girl." We talk about the Karyn Kusama cult horror comedy Jennifer's Body this week with our bestie Lauren Ogle from Keep it Weird, and we can't help but be lesbigay for Megan Fox. As Jennifer Check, the demon possesed boy killer who chows down on the patriarchy, Fox has never been more in her element. The Diablo Cody penned script was sorely overlooked when it came out in 2009, but has since been reassesed as a feminst classic. We love its lead heroine Anita "Needy" Lesnicki played by Amanda Seyfried, and are secret Low Shoulder stans of Adam Brody's Nikolai, the true villian of the movie. We always knew what Kusama, and Cody had with this wonderful movie, and am glad everyone else has finally come around. If you need us we'll be listening to Through the Trees on repeat. 10 May 2024 | 235. Easy A Directed by Will Gluck | 01:33:17
"People thought I was a dirty skank? Fine. I'd be the dirtiest skank they've ever seen" We watched the 2010 teen film Easy A with our friend Evelyn. We truly used to be a proper country. When we used to get teen comedies like this in movie theaters, not just dropped on streaming platforms. Directed by Will Gluck and written by Bert V. Royal, Easy A helped catapult Emma Stone into massive stardom. Fourteen years and two best actress Oscars later Miss Stone might be the most beloved, and talented of her generation. And they say the modern movie star is dead! When Olive Penderghast lies to her best friend about losing her virginity to a college boy, the rumour mill catches on like wildfire, branding Olive as the school harlot. We discuss dated elements of the film that feel painfully 2010, Emma Stone's star is born performance, and the last screen credit for Amanda Bynes. And don't worry, we discuss Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci's unhinged performances as Olive's "cool" parents. Truly only Tom Cruise can judge us for our incedencies! 03 Dec 2021 | 128. But I'm A Cheerleader with special guest Zoë Secrest | 01:29:10
“Foreplay is for sissies! Real men go in, unload, and pull out!” We watched “But I’m a Cheerleader” with our friend Zoë Secrest, and like its heroine Megan (Natasha Lyonne) we might or might not have been eating tofu and had a giant Melissa Etheridge poster in our bedrooms growing up. A staple of queer cinema of the early 00s, we love this razor sharp and hilarious satire by writer/director Jamie Babbit Join us as we follow Megan as she falls down the rabbit hole of gay conversion camp at ‘New Directions’ lead by Cathy Moriarty and RuPaul Charles. We want to be best friends with lesbian icon Clea Duvall, and can agree that Moriarty screaming sexual positions over a megaphone is a mood. 30 Jun 2023 | Rerun: Superman II (The Extended Cut) with Special Guest Billy Roach | 02:07:58
It's a MTMUG rerun! We don't have a new episode this week, but we reached into our back cataloge and found the Extended Cut of Superman II with our buddy Billy Roach that originally aired May 6th 2021. This "Extended Cut" keeps in a few tangents that didn't make the original episode. With the annoucment of David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as our new Clark Kent and Lois Lane in James Gunn's upcoming Superman: Legacy its the perfect time to revisit one of our classique episodes! Kneel before Zod!! We watched Superman II (1980) with our friend and Superman expert Billy Roach and we believe a man can fly. We take a deep dive into Superman lore and really get into what makes these early superhero movies so special. Christopher Reeve is an absolute dreamboat as Superman and Margot Kidder is adorably kooky as Lois Lane. But the Kryptonian villains are everything! Giving you disco S&M glamour. Terence Stamp's General Zod is serving early Priscilla Queen of the Desert bored-queen whileSarah Douglas is FIERCE as glamorous Ursa. We can't leave out Valerie Perrine as Lex Luthor's (Gene Hackman) ditzy moll Miss Teschemacher. Trust us, this movie is gayer than you remember. 14 Mar 2020 | 39. Clueless with special guest Brad Liberti | 01:30:17
We can’t remember algebra but we can quote this entire movie start to finish. We watched Clueless (1995) with Brad Liberti and we’re totally buggin! We take a deep dive into this quintessential 90’s mega hit. Was the slang made up? Did real 90’s kids dress like that? Is it weird that Cher (Alicia Silverstone) and Josh (Paul Rudd) end up together? The answer is WHO CARES! This movie is a perfect gem and no one can convince us otherwise. If you worshipped this movie as a kid, you’re totally a disco-dancin’, Oscar Wilde readin’, Streisand ticket holdin’ friend of Dorothy now. 01 Apr 2022 | 141. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King | 01:44:17
"I'm glad to be here with you Samwise Gamgee. Here at the end of all things." We watched The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King all by our damn selves and we’re ready for second breakfast. OK let’s be real, these movies aren’t exactly passing the Bechtel Test but when the ladies are finally trotted out they’re serving fragrance commercial Eleganza and we’re loving every fleeting minute of it. Orlando Bloom as Legolas the Elf ignited many a sexual awakening and the Hobbits are really giving us a lot to work with in this episode. Did Frodo and Sam get gay Hobbit married on the side of that mountain? We like to think so. Once circuit-gay Gollum gets thrown into the volcano and destroys the Ring Frodo goes through his emo phase, Sam marries a lady-Hobbit and they both act like their mountain-top wedding never happened. A likely story. 20 Nov 2020 | 74. Earth Girls Are Easy with special guest Moranne Klassen | 01:26:52
Do you guys have margaritas on your planet? We watched Earth Girls Are Easy (1988) with our friend Moranne Klassen and you guys are so lucky you crashed in the valley. It's the baddest place on earth! Take a trip with us to SoCal's San Fernando Valley of the 1980's. It was a theme park filled with leggy nail technicians, night clubs inside observatories and dayglow aliens in retro 50's spaceships. 01 Oct 2021 | 119. Donnie Darko with special guest Michael Morgan | 01:47:17
"Donnie Darko. What the hell kind of name is that? It's like some sort of superhero or something." We watched Donnie Darko with MTMUG Superstar Michael Morgan and we have serious doubts about your commitment to Sparkle Motion! It's our first Jake Gyllenhaal review and this movie does not disappoint. Remember when the gays would constantly claim Jake as one of our own? We just couldn't resist that doe-eyed stare. Donnie Darko really put Jake on the mainstream radar. First of all can we talk about this cast? Drew Barrymore's Flower Films production company went to bat to get this movie made and and Drew herself plays Donnie's too-cool English teacher. America's hipster girlfriend and Jakes real-life sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, absolute icon Patrick Swayze and the Legendary Beth Grant, to name a few, round out this stellar ensemble. Is there really an answer to what this movie is actually about? Maybe not - but we try to get to the bottom of it. We'll leave you with this... Cellar Door. 31 Dec 2021 | 132. Carol with special guest Jackson Cooper | 01:50:55
"Just when you think it can't get any worse, you run out of cigarettes." We watched Carol (2015) with MTMUG Superstar Jackson Cooper and we'll take the train set! Cate Blanchett is giving us EVERYTHING as Carol the bored housewife/secret lesbian in 1950's New York. Rooney Mara's Therese is giving us wide-eyed innocence, even though she really knows exactly what she's doing. The costumes, the hair, the setting all reeled us in (we're once again "transported) but the melodrama, the old timey dialogue and the New England WASPy character names are just the icing on the cake. Let's also give it up for Grand High Lesbian Sarah Paulson as the best friend/ex lover she was born to play and Jake Lacey once again playing America's problematic boyfriend. Barbara please! We watched Mommie Dearest (1981) with the very funny Jackson Cooper and we meet "the biggest Mother of them all!" Faye Dunaway's performance as Joan Crawford is high camp, high drama and we can't look away! This movie cemented itself as a gay camp classic the minute Faye turns around and reveals Joans face in the first scene of the movie. Is Joan a villain or just misunderstood? Whatever the case may be she did what needed to be done! If you know someone who hasn't seen this movie - it is your duty as a gay to sit them down and make sure they watch every moment! It only took us a year but we finally got our act together. We started recording Back To The Beach (1987) on a lovely Palm Springs vacation when disaster stuck and half of the episode got lost in the mysterious "cloud." We dusted off this artifact from MTMUG past and shined it up like a new penny - for you! This beach movie throwback to the 60's by way of the 80's is so darn charming, funny and full of cute boys in wetsuits you'll be quoting it all summer. 15 Oct 2021 | 121. Misery (1990) Directed by Rob Reiner | 01:46:11
"I'm gonna get my Liberace records!" We watched Misery (1990) and we still feel all oogie. From master horror author Stephen King, Misery give us absolute lunatic Annie Wilkes brought to us in an Academy Award winning performance by Kathy Bates. The ultimate super-fan, Wilkes takes obsession to new heights when she holds romance novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) hostage after a near fatal car accident. This movie is so well acted we even buy Sonny Corleone as a romance novelist! Do we all have a little Annie Wilkes in us? Hopefully not too much. But I'll be damned if I'm watching a movie with a less than cohesive plot and I want to just scream... HE DIDN'T GET OUT OF THE COCK - A - DOODIE CAR! 16 Jun 2023 | 196. Bachelor Party with special guest Chris Cirigliano | 01:49:05
"What did you say Stanley? You said No Hookers!" We watched the early Tom Hanks sex romp "Bachelor Party" (1984) with one of our favorite straights Chris Cirigliano (Very Special Television Podcast) and please don't cancel us for this one! They really don't make sex comedies the way they used to. Okay this may in fact be an ultra hetero, slightly misogynistic, defintely casually racist and possibly transphobic movie (stay with us I promise we have a point) but we definitely call the filmmakers out on their BS and address the bad along with the good. And boy is there some good in this movie. Young Tom Hanks is a charming as ever and 80's Hair Metal Video Vixen Tawny Kitaen (RIP) as his fiance is serving looks for days. The crew of horny dudes throwing the party is lead by none other than Adrian Zmed (Grease 2, T.J. Hooker) who wastes no time removing is shirt and singing a song in what is absolutely not a musical. The script is full of corny "Airplane" style sight gags and absurd humor but the cast has some comedy greats in here really giving it their all. We already loved Wendie Jo Sperber but the sight of her dressed as a Night Court style street walker pummeling her husband is worth the price of admission. And speaking of a cover charge Bachelor Party takes a trip to 80's mainstay Chippendale's for some full on beefcake. Let's be honest Nick "the dick" might be the sole reason we chose this movie but the gag is top notch. We have memories of watching this one as kids but hey, we're the last of the Gen X kids and the first of the Millenials... we were raised by our VCRs and we're all the better for it. Should we have been watching a movie with allusions to a donkey show, plenty of bare breasts and lots and lots of use of the word "hookers"? Probably not - but if it weren't for raunchy comedies like Bachelor Party readily available on VHS and cable our therapists would be out of business.
08 May 2020 | 47. The Brady Bunch Movie | 01:26:37
We’re heading back to the 70’s by way of the 90’s and it’s a Sunshine Day! We watched The Brady Bunch movie from 1995 and don’t want to believe this movie is old enough to rent a car! We get real deep into our love for this iconic family in all their forms - from the original sitcom, to the Brady Bunch Variety Hour, The Brady Brides, A Very Brady Christmas and beyond. 07 Apr 2023 | 186. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) Directed by Joe Dante | 01:34:21
I hope you remembered not to feed your mogwai after midnight, or get them wet, because we're talking about Gremlins 2: The New Batch this week! Joe Dante turned up the dial to 11 when he directed his follow up to the Amblin 80s classic film. Both are standbyes of our childhood, but there's something about the New Batch we're still fasinated with. We talk about every Gremlin type this movie introduce us to (Batman Gremlin, Midatlantic accent Gremlin, Phantom of the Opera Gremlin, Electric Gremlin, Spider Gremlin, Salad Gremlin, and return of Flasher Gremlin). And don't forget the drag icon herself, Greta. We still can't decide what category Greta is walking in, Body Beautiful or Face, but she brings it to you ever ball! Arguably one of the weridest studio blockbusters ever made Gremlins 2: The New Batch opperates on a level of camp that studio movies rarely ever explore. 06 Aug 2021 | 111. Robin Hood with special guest Matt Baume | 01:11:52
“He’s so handsome, just like his rewards posters.” We watched Robin Hood with the insightful Matt Baume (Matt Baume’s Culture Cruise) and oo-de-lally that sly fox had us feeling some type of way. For a family animated film this movie had gay culture down to a science; a thin and boyishly handsome scamp spends his days with his large bear companion dabbling in cross dressing and social justice. The effeminate Prince John and his lisping consort Sir Hiss are the template for the queer coded Disney villain trope (oh we get into it). And let’s face it - the busty Lady Cluck is a drag queen. This one was a lot of fun to break down, but we came to a consensus; If having a crush on an anthropomorphic fox is wrong - we don’t wanna be right. 17 Jun 2022 | 151. Nowhere with special guest Seth Shubin | 01:30:37
“L.A is like… nowhere. Everyone who lives here is lost.” We put some gas in the VCR this week to talk about the Gregg Araki film Nowhere with guest Seth Shubin @jerkofalltrades. Described in the marketing as “90210 was on Acid” this cast is a who’s who of up and coming Hollywood. With early appearances by Ryan Phillippe, Heather Graham, Scott Caan, Mena Suvari, Denise Richards, as well as Araki staple James Duval, Nowhere is one of the hidden gems of the 90s. We talk about the once again genius castings of his films (Christina Applegate, Guillermo Diaz, Kathleen Robertson), the more insane celebrity cameos, and terrific soundtrack that’s still a staple of our car CD player. 02 Dec 2022 | 175. Young Adult with special guest Kelly Hardy | 01:53:34
"Love conquers all, have you not seen the Graduate? Or like, I don't know, anything?" We're rounding out our Diablo Cody joints this year and invited over the hilarious Kelly Hardy to watch Young Adult. Seeing Charlize Theron as a "psychotic prom queen bitch" who takes on her hometown to rescue to her old beau Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson) from his wife (Elizabeth Reaser) and new born, is dare we say the most refreshing way beautiful people have ever been portrayed in film. This very anti-Hollywood movie rubbed certain people the wrong way when it came out in 2011, but just like Jennifer's Body's we're here to tell you this movie is incredible, and Theron's tour de force performance should have been Oscar nominated. Topics discussed are why gay men might gravitate towards a character as awful, beautiful, and complex as Mavis Gary. Complicated relationships with hometowns, and Patrick Wilson always being cast as the "Dumb Hot Dad" in movies. Grab your room tempeature Diet Coke, and breakout your Teenage Fanclub mixtape, it's Young Adult!
26 Mar 2021 | 92. The Fan with special guest Jeff Nelson | 01:41:17
We needed hearts, not diamonds! We watched The Fan (1981) with the very funny Jeff Nelson and we could use a warm cup of High Point coffee! Lauren Bacall plays a Broadway actress with an obsessive fan played by Michael Biehn who may, or may not be a closet-case (spoiler alert: he totally is). A pre-Terminator (sexy as hell) Biehn spends the movie typing explicit letters to Sally Ross (Bacall) but is rejected at every turn. Maureen Stapleton as Sally’s no-nonsense secretary and James Garner as Sally’s would-be love interest round out the cast and when the three of them shared the screen I could smell the second hand smoke from their voices alone. The play within the movie is the most homosexual thing I’ve seen in a long time - and this is the same movie with Michael Biehn jumping into a YMCA pool in his boxer shorts. In New York City. In 1981. You do the math. 11 Sep 2020 | 64. Sunset Boulevard with special guest Dennis Griffin | 01:49:15
“We didn’t need dialogue. We had faces!” We watched Sunset Blvd (1950) with the very funny Dennis Griffin and we’re ready for our close-up! This Uber-meta film about the film industry gave the world one of the most glamorous, tragic and straight up bananas performances of the 20th Century in Gloria Swanson’s portrayal of Norma Desmond. William Holden is also giving us major beef-cake daddy vibes as Joe Gillis, the screenwriter turned gigolo who finds himself on the business end of Norma’s amorous affections. If you’re anything like us, after watching this movie you’ll be perfecting your Norma Desmond impression while manufacturing a turban out of a tea towel and prancing around the house in your most glamorous caftan. Remember Norma’s words well kids... “No one ever leaves a star. That’s what makes one a star.” Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on iTunes! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna |
