20 May 2024FR Episode 31: Solène, Mannequin et Miss 00:34:06

19 Jul 2023EN Episode 16: Delia, LGBTQIA+ advocate and activist 00:41:22

Welcome to this new episode of More Than Medical Students!

Today I am excited to be joined by Delia, Delia is a first year medical student and a LGBTQIA+ advocate and activist. This is such a great episode where we discuss really important topics such as discrimination and health inequalities towards members of the LGBTQIA+ community and our lack of teaching and training around this at Medical School.

Delia shares with us her story of finding their own identity and belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community and their decision to study medicine and strive to improve the medical space for patients of her community. Before Med School Delia also undertook research in transgender patients with cancer and their lived experiences. They also founded an impactful society in their college to help improve the LGBTQ students accessing healthcare on the college campus and they share tips with us on how to start an impactful project locally.

Delia is now an advocate and activist both on social media and formal policy advocacy on a wider level and I really admire their work.

We also discussed Delia’s experience of studying sociology and how that understanding helps understand healthcare and the individual’s experience of healthcare, which I personally found so interesting as well.

Go listen to the episode now and let us know how you find it!

10 Jan 2022EN Episode 4: Emma, Intercalation in Ethics and Law00:40:11

Hello everyone, welcome to Episode 4. In this episode I am joined by Emma aka @medical.dilemma, who is a final year medical student who I was lucky to meet on Instagram and get to know her.

Our conversation explores a few different topics especially focusing on Emma’s intercalated degree, which is an extra degree that medical students can do while taking a year out in the middle of medical school. Emma has done an intercalated Masters in Medical Ethics and Law, which I was very keen to find out more about. I found it amazing to hear about all the different skills and knowledge that Emma gained from this year, which are so different from all the scientific and clinical knowledge we gain at medical school and will be a great addition to her in her future career. This episode was a real reminder for me that studying or researching whatever topic can really enrich a person in so many ways!

We also chat about working as an HCA (healthcare assistant) before medical school and what that can bring to you, as well as mental health at medical school and finding a balance.

Leave a comment to tell us how you find the episode! Let us know if you have done an intercalated degree and how you found it!

14 Jun 2023EN Episode 14: Rivkie, Mother, Daughter and Author00:39:54

Hello everyone and welcome to Episode 14!

My guest this episode is Rivkie, from @Rivkiestein. Rivkie has just graduated from Medical School in the USA and is starting as a Resident very soon in Ney York! Medical school is a really busy busy time I’m sure you all know but Rivkie shows us in this episode that you can be a medical student as well as a daughter, partner and mother. In fact relationships around us are SO VITAL at medical school!

We have so many things to chat about with Rivkie starting with Rivkie’s journey of becoming a Mom during medical school, which is an incredible journey that I absolutely lover hearing about. We also chat about relationships at medical school and having both you and your partner in the same demanding course and how to manage that. Importantly we discuss couple matching which is what US medical students can do to obtain a residency post in the same area as their partner.

Please note the episode discusses diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the second half of the episode.

Rivkie is also a newly published author of a book called “Secrets are no fun” which she is excited to share with us in this episode. This book is suitable for children and adults and recounts Rivkie’s experience as a child whose mother developed cancer. It is so important to talk about what it’s like to have a loved one with cancer and how tough that can be, especially as a child.  I was so touched to hear about her story and I hope you guys will be able to check out the book to find out more. Hearing about the publishing process for her book was also such an interesting part of the episode. If you are a medical student interested in publishing a book- we’ve got some tips for you!

If you enjoy the Episode we would love to hear about it! Send us a message and leave a rating and comment on your podcast platform, it really mean a lot!

14 Nov 2021EN Episode 2: Risata K, rapper and content creator00:30:40

Hello everyone, welcome to Episode 2, the first episode with a guest in English! In this episode I was joined by Risata Kufuor, who is a final year medical student at Imperial.

On the side of this she is a rapper and has written, recorded and published her own music professionally. She is also a content creator on YouTube and TikTok. We had a super interesting conversation about all her projects: how she started, her inspiration for her creativity and how she is balancing everything with medical school. We discussed some tips for those out there who are thinking of starting such a creative project but who might be unsure of themselves or how to start. I found it lovely to be chatting about all things music in this episode which is something I don't often have the chance to do and I loved exploring all this creativity. Whether you're a music expert or just a casual listener I guarantee you will enjoy our conversation!

Leave a comment to tell us how you found it!

17 Jan 2024EN Episode 25: Jen, starting Medical School at 50! 00:46:49

Welcome to this new episode of More Than Medical Students!

In this podcast one of the things we love is celebrating Medical Students with different backgrounds and journeys and showcase the incredible diversity of our student community. Today, I am very excited to welcome Jen Reinmuth-Birch who is a 53 year old 3rd year Medical Student from the US. She is defying preconceptions about Med Students and age by starting Medical School at 50 years old- what an inspiration!

In this episode we explore Jen’s journey and experience as a non-traditional applicant and now student. She shares some brilliant tips for other non-traditional applicants including interviews, personal statement and portfolio experiences. We also discuss Jen’s experience of balancing studying and personal life, as Jen has been able to thrive at Medical School and in her family life with her two twin sons and her lovely farm in Oregon. Jen shows us that non-traditional students can bring so much to the Medical Student and Doctor community: a different outlook, unique experience and innovative approaches for patients.

And in case anyone is still wandering about this: age does not matter and you’re not too old to follow your dreams!
