14 Jun 2024Michael Edesess Exposes the Conspiracies in Common Financial Practices01:05:20

Do you think there are conspiracies in common financial practices? I do. Michael Edesess thinks so too. He thinks there may be some conspiracies with pensions as well. He explains why strategies like rebalancing, diversification, mean variance optimization, and tax loss harvesting might not be as beneficial as they seem. Michael sheds light on how institutions like Ivy League endowments and public pension funds waste billions on active management that underperforms simple market indices, driven by the industry's profit motives rather than investors' best interests.

Today we discuss...

  • Michael's unexpected entry into the finance world, influenced by a classmate's suggestion to explore a brokerage firm using mathematics.
  • Why the finance industry and its practices, such as rebalancing and tax loss harvesting, fundamentally flawed.
  • Michael's perspective on rebalancing, challenging the belief that it improves investment returns, and why he believes this advice is often misguided.
  • The misconception of diversification in mutual funds and clarify the real benefits of diversification according to Harry Markowitz's theory.
  • Modern portfolio theory (MPT) and Michael's critique of its practical application, especially concerning mean variance optimization.
  • Why tax loss harvesting is not as beneficial as commonly perceived and the costs associated with it.
  • Robo advisors, their cost efficiency, and why Michael believes they still don't offer significant value over simple index funds.
  • The inefficiency and high costs of investment management for Ivy League endowment funds and public pension funds, labeling the industry as a conspiracy of inefficiency.

07 Mar 2025The Future of Copper and Clean Energy with Gord Neal01:04:27

Gord Neal, CEO of World Copper, joins us to talk about the future of copper! Gord shares his extensive experience and background in mining commodities. He emphasized copper's crucial role in the transition to clean energy, particularly for electric vehicles, power grids, and renewable energy infrastructure. Gord also talks about the potential impact of the new U.S. administration on mining policies, and how regulatory streamlining could accelerate domestic production and strengthen U.S. energy security.

We discuss...

  • Gord Neal, CEO of World Copper, has 25 years of experience in mining, specializing in metals like gold, silver, copper, and uranium.
  • He was a founder of Mag Silver, growing it from a $50M to a $2.5B market cap company, and led New Pacific Metals to a $1.2B valuation.
  • Copper is critical for the transition from fossil fuels to electric energy, as EVs and grid upgrades require significantly more copper than traditional vehicles and infrastructure.
  • The supply of copper is insufficient to meet the demand for 2030 and 2050 energy transition goals, requiring urgent increases in mining output.
  • Nuclear power is essential to meeting global energy needs, as wind and solar alone cannot provide sufficient or reliable power.
  • Copper remains the preferred metal for electrical applications due to its conductivity, durability, and cost-effectiveness compared to alternatives like silver.
  • The global copper deficit is around 100M tons, with new mining projects facing long lead times and high costs.
  • The U.S. needs to accelerate mining permits, particularly in copper-rich states like Arizona, to secure domestic supply.
  • The new Trump administration is expected to push for more mining and energy independence, potentially speeding up federal land permitting.
  • Copper demand is rising due to the shift toward electrification, requiring more wiring for vehicles and energy grids.
  • The U.S. power grid requires significant upgrades to support an electric vehicle transition, necessitating vast amounts of copper.
  • The slow progress in energy grid modernization is due to high costs, bureaucratic red tape, and lack of large-scale energy storage solutions.
  • Political and regulatory challenges impact the speed at which mining projects and energy infrastructure can develop.

12 Oct 2022Beware of Inflation – Oil Price Inflation, OPEC, Russian Chess vs US Checkers, Mortgages, Bank of England and More00:43:22

Oil price inflation is back...

OPEC has decided to go against the US and the US is losing. Maybe The White House should not have used the strategic petroleum reserves for political gain in November. Oil price inflation will be back with a vengeance this winter. Stock up now. At least we are not living in Germany. The Russians may be losing in Ukraine, but they played this hand well. The only one to upstage Russia/OPEC is the Onion who filed an Amacus brief with the US Supreme court... Well played sirs... Well played.

The Bank of England is having big problems as well, and very little has to do with the new PM, Liz truss. I only mention England because the Bank of England had to intervene in the markets this week. But they are not alone with problems.

The mortgage and housing markets are a mess once again. And we also discuss the yield curve.

  • Lia works with traders as a performance coach, helping them manage emotions, risk, and discipline.
  • She observes that fewer women enter trading due to natural risk aversion and societal influences but notes a growing interest among women in financial education.
  • One of the biggest issues Lia sees in traders is poor risk management and misunderstanding risk-to-reward ratios.
  • She teaches a simple risk management formula that she believes is life-changing for retail traders.
  • Institutional traders often struggle with ego and emotional challenges, especially during losing years.

25 Dec 2024Happy Festivus & Christmas Trends00:49:43

Today we cover a mix of festive holiday reflections and current Christmas trends. We debate the merits of artificial versus real trees, the Federal Reserve's recent decision to lower interest rates, market reactions, and the potential onset of a recession, and historical cases like Puerto Rico's bond defaults, and more! It's a Merry Christmas here!

Today we discuss...

  • How Hanukkah's alignment with Christmas is rare due to differing solar cycles and offers a unique multi-year celebration opportunity for 2024-2025.
  • A shift from real to artificial Christmas trees, driven by mold allergies.
  • A personal tradition of year-end reflection, dubbed "Best Year Ever," emphasizing life evaluation and goal setting over a two-week holiday break.
  • Fed Chair Powell's interest rate cuts and their implications for markets and economic confidence were analyzed, with insights on potential recession signals like the inverted yield curve.
  • Economic indicators, including high-yield bond performance and confidence metrics, were examined to forecast recession risks and investor sentiment.
  • The Puerto Rican bond default served as a cautionary tale for assessing risks in high-yield portfolios, drawing parallels to current market trends.
  • Market bullishness is fueled by a strong economy, decent earnings, and optimism about new presidential policies perceived as pro-business.
  • Concerns were raised about tariff policies potentially replacing income tax and their inflationary implications.
  • The market appears overvalued, with current performance exceeding economic fundamentals, risking a potential correction.
  • Reversion to the mean was discussed as a natural market dynamic, suggesting that extreme highs or lows eventually balance out.
  • Rising money market assets reflect cautious investor behavior, with significant cash reserves awaiting better market valuations.
  • Inflationary pressures are linked to reduced supply and increased money supply, paralleling market dynamics.
  • Markets need a perceived value shift to attract sidelined liquidity.
  • Year-end is a prime time to reassess portfolios and consider tax implications.
  • Reflect on strong market performance and evaluate whether reallocating or profit-taking is prudent.
  • December 31st and January 1st are pivotal market dates due to tax-loss selling and portfolio rebalancing.
  • Diversification theory, while historically valuable, may now be less effective due to increased asset correlation.
  • Risk is the permanent loss of capital, whereas volatility is short-term price fluctuation.
  • The current bull market may soon rival the 1990s tech boom in duration and performance, though a mean reversion is expected.
  • High-yield bonds should be viewed more like high-dividend equities due to their risk and reward profile.
  • Online shopping has grown but still accounts for less than 20% of total retail sales.
  • Men and women share similar preferences for holiday gifts, favoring money, clothing, and gift cards.

09 Aug 2024Investing In Hedge Funds For the Average Joe01:02:01

Bob Elliott discusses how investing in hedge funds can be for everyone! Elliott highlighted the traditional "two-and-twenty" fee structure, common in hedge funds, private equity, and other alternative assets, which can significantly erode investor returns. His firm aims to replicate these strategies, including equity long-short and global macro, using advanced machine learning to infer hedge fund positions from return data, making them accessible at lower fees for the average investor.

Today we discuss...

  • Bob's focus to bring low-cost indexing to the world of two-and-twenty, similar to the impact of stock and bond indexing.
  • Hedge fund strategies, despite being expensive, offer good returns with lower volatility and drawdowns compared to stocks.
  • Various hedge fund strategies include equity long-short, global macro, fixed income, and emerging market strategies.
  • Real-time performance data helps in understanding and replicating hedge fund strategies.
  • The current economic cycle is income-driven rather than credit-driven, making it more durable to rising interest rates.
  • Overvaluation and high expectations suggest that now may not be the best time to invest heavily in stocks.
  • The similarities between the current period and the 1970s highlight the importance of diversified portfolios.
  • Factors like de-globalization, geopolitical tensions, and inflationary pressures could influence future economic dynamics.
  • Volatility in market expectations and the reality of economic conditions contribute to the current buoyant market despite high interest rates.

21 Jun 2023Beware Deflation Is Back00:49:54

Another Fed meeting and another disappointment for someone. We look at the CPI numbers and then the Fed decision to pause on rate hikes and it make me scratch my head in confusion. They say they are worried about inflation, and maybe raising rates 1-2 more times this year, yet inflation is dropping quickly, the economy seems to be fine and interest rates are higher than they have been in 20 years.

Are we living in the twilight zone, Alice and Wonderland, or fantasy land. it's not entirely clear, but one thing is clear... The Fed is determined to squash inflation no matter what.

If they keep on this path, it leads to deflation, which is another boogieman they are afraid of. We will see which monster under the bed they are afraid of most. Both are bad choices, but they cannot sit this one out.

I'm still sticking to my claim that we could hit 0% inflation by year end. We are halfway through the year and accelerating towards that number. I might hit the target earlier than expected.

Join us this week for another exciting episode about what the end of world looks like. Don't hate us for being optimists 🙂

27 Sep 2024Macro Economist Reveals… Global Meltdown Is At Hand01:08:52

Peter Berezin is here today to discuss the global meltdown that is coming! The chief strategist at BCA Research discusses the potential for an upcoming U.S. recession. Peter predicts that a recession could lead to a significant market crash, even without deep economic downturns, much like the 2001 recession. He also touches on inflation, budget deficits, and the government's ability to counteract economic downturns.

Today we discuss...

  • Predictions of a US recession to start later this year or early next year, contradicting the expectation of a soft landing.
  • Economic insulation from job openings and excess pandemic savings is depleting, cooling the economy.
  • Real estate markets, including commercial, residential, and single-family homes, look worrying due to high vacancy rates and rising delinquency.
  • Small regional banks could face problems due to their exposure to commercial real estate, potentially leading to a steady stream of bad news.
  • During a recession, Berezin expects opportunities to buy solid companies at a discount, particularly in tech and healthcare.
  • Inflation is expected to stay under control over the next 12 months due to a weakening economy, falling job openings, and lower wage growth.
  • Peter explains that printing money to finance fiscal deficits can be inflationary, particularly when unemployment rises and fiscal spending increases.
  • The large US budget deficit is troubling, especially as counter-cyclical fiscal policy might be limited during future economic downturns.
  • Concern about the continued printing of money in bad times, potentially leading to economic imbalances like income inequality.
  • Raising taxes is suggested as a possible path forward, though political challenges could impede this.
  • Tax increases are likely if certain tax cuts expire, with potential cuts to defense or social spending as other budget-balancing measures.
  • Concerns about worsening fiscal scenarios prompt the idea of hedging with TIPS and gold.
  • Global markets, especially outside the U.S., are seen as more attractive due to valuation gaps, with emerging markets managing inflation better recently.
  • Commodities, particularly metals, are seen as benefiting from the green energy transition, while oil demand may decrease.
  • Gold is positioned as a hedge against geopolitical volatility and long-term inflation, though rising bond yields have made it less attractive recently.
  • Bitcoin is unlikely to become a central bank asset due to its anonymity and governments' need to monitor and tax transactions.

04 Jan 2019Investing in Raw Land with Mark Podolsky, The Land Geek00:38:48

Raw land. Is it the undiscovered country of the investing world?

Mark Podolsky shares his experience buying, selling, and leasing raw land as an investment.

Unlike buying traditional real estate, purchasing raw land doesn’t require a lot of money. Mark outlines a process of looking for lots with unpaid property taxes, purchasing the lots, and then offering them to people who live along the plot line.

The key to a successful raw land purchase is to do the research and due-diligence needed to make sure you have a clear title or other obstructions to a hassle-free transaction.

After Mark’s interview, the panel discusses other thoughts behind investing in raw land - and the pitfalls you need to be aware of.

15 Nov 2023The 2024 Bank Crisis Everyone Saw And Did Nothing00:51:20

2023 is almost over and we only had one bank crisis. It is a miracle there were not more this year. However 2024 is shaping up to produce a potentially massive banking crisis on the scale of 2008.

A 2024 bank crisis would surprise a lot of people, but at the same time everyone saw it coming and did nothing.  Why? Good question. This has the making of the next black swan. Much like 2022 when the markets immediately dropped  on the first day of trading. People just decided that it was time. Time will tell for 2024.

Also in the news... The last US treasury auction yielded poor results when no one showed up. Yields are not dropping like many predicted. And next year should be interesting.

01 Nov 2024The US Sovereign Wealth Fund… Origins Revealed01:31:44

Richard Duncan is back to share the concept of a U.S. sovereign wealth fund, an idea to drive national economic growth through large-scale public investment in emerging industries and technologies. Recent bipartisan support from both the Trump and Biden camps highlights growing momentum for this initiative, and Richard thinks it could accelerate technological breakthroughs in fields like AI, quantum computing, and biotech. Such a fund would not only help reduce the national debt but also bolster U.S. competitiveness against China’s rapid advancements in technology and defense.

Today we discuss...

  • The concept of a U.S. sovereign wealth fund, a proposal he has supported for years as a means of boosting national economic growth.
  • Concerns that government programs already incentivize private sector growth, like R&D tax credits and preferential funding, but face inefficiencies.
  • How a U.S. sovereign wealth fund would act as a venture capital source for private companies, similar to successful models in Singapore.
  • How under-investment could allow China to become the dominant superpower, citing parallels to Europe's unpreparedness for Hitler’s rise.
  • The effects of inflated debt and the fragility of the U.S. economy, highlighting government intervention as a key reason it hasn’t collapsed.
  • If credit contracts, a recession could turn into a depression, risking significant economic instability.
  • Each time private sector defaults threaten contraction, such as in 2008 and 2020, government intervention prevents economic collapse.
  • Advocates of austerity overlook that spending cuts can cripple consumption, investment, and job creation, leading to economic decline.
  • The speaker argues that large-scale investment, rather than austerity, is essential for growth and national security.
  • America's economic resilience stems partly from government debt; alternatives could risk societal collapse.
  • Future U.S. prosperity and competitiveness, especially against China, depend on substantial investment in science and technology.
  • The risk of economic misallocation, using overemphasis on pharmaceuticals as an example.
  • Balancing private sector decisions and government financing could ensure effective investment in essential industries.
  • The U.S. must innovate in energy, particularly nuclear and fusion, to meet growing demands from sectors like AI.
  • America's past reliance on globalization reduced inflation, but future economic stability may require adapting to changing global conditions.

Don't Fight The Fed... How many times have we heard that phrase.

Yet people never seem to listen. This week Powell said get out of my way. I'm fighting inflation like Volker. Inflation (via CPI) is still high at 7.1% but lower than last month and lower than expected. But still a far cry from the 4.25-4.5% Fed funds rate.

The market got the message on Thursday and Friday. Looks like the Santa Clause rally is turning into a lump of coal.

US tax trends can get tricky! No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, I think we can all agree, no one wants to pay higher taxes. Today we also discuss the nature of markets. Managing risk is crucial, especially during downturns. Success in investing requires understanding your emotions and personal risk tolerance. Today we discuss...

  • Markets fluctuate: they rise about 70% of the time, fall 30%, and rarely move sideways.
  • Understanding market risk is crucial for managing investments during downturns.
  • Investors' risk tolerance shifts with market conditions.
  • Emotional responses to market movements often lead to poor decision-making.
  • Studies suggest that individuals who don't frequently check their investments tend to perform better.
  • Various factors, including government policies, influence market dynamics.
  • Government decisions on CBDCs may impact currency stability and investment strategies.
  • Concerns about hyperinflation should be tempered by an understanding of historical inflation trends.
  • Calls for higher taxes on the rich may not yield desired outcomes and could lead to unintended consequences.
  • Aligning policy with human nature can lead to more effective outcomes in economic governance.

21 Feb 2025Fix and Flip Real Estate with Charles Goodwin00:51:18

Charles Goodwin is here to talk about how to broaden your investment portfolio with fix and flip real estate. Charles discusses how he transitioned into real estate investing and acquired around 50 single-family homes. He shares insights on the current real estate market, skepticism about lower rates, and predicts a slow grind towards affordability.

Today we discuss...

  • Charles Goodwin shares his background in finance, tech sales, and real estate lending, now serving as VP of Sales overseeing $6.5 billion in loan origination.
  • He started investing in real estate after seeing family success and recognizing its potential as a wealth-building tool.
  • The real estate market remains highly unaffordable, and Charles expects a slow grind with flat prices due to interest rates and supply constraints.
  • The "lock-in effect" has kept inventory tight, as homeowners hesitate to sell and trade low mortgage rates for higher ones.
  • Without a major economic event, he expects home sales to recover slowly over a five-year period rather than a quick turnaround.
  • Mortgage rates remain high, driven by inflation expectations and bond market movements, with no return to 3-4% rates likely.
  • The bond market's recent divergence from Fed policy shows that long-term rates can rise despite Fed cuts, affecting mortgage affordability.
  • Fix-and-flip and rehab opportunities vary by region, with stronger markets in the Midwest and Sunbelt states, while Florida and Texas face challenges.
  • Midwest markets like Cincinnati and Indianapolis offer better affordability, making them attractive for both flipping and rentals.
  • Private lending has gained traction as banks and credit unions have pulled back, fueling continued investor activity.
  • Charles remains cautiously optimistic, emphasizing that real estate cycles take time and affordability is the key factor shaping future trends.

09 Nov 2018How Do ETFs and Other Funds Work with Kevin Quigg00:45:00

Kevin Quigg describes the differences between ETFs, mutual funds, and the type of person who would benefit from hedge funds.

Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) is traded during the day, just as a single stock would be.

Mutual funds are typically bought directly through the mutual fund manager. The price is determined by the net asset value of the securities held within the fund at the end of the trading day.

Kevin Quigg describes hedge funds as different from ETFs and mutual funds as “sharp tools rather than dull instruments”. He goes on to explain that hedge funds are only available to qualified investors…those who have met certain requirements and proven themselves to be able to truly understand the amount of risk they are taking.

There are also numerous restrictions with hedge funds. Listen to Miranda’s interview with Kevin Quigg and then the discussion our roundtable has immediately following.

30 Nov 2018Constructing ETFs with Kip Meadows - PLUS the Panel Talks Marijuana Stocks00:40:20

Kip Meadows joins us to talk about how ETFs are constructed.

He explains that an ETF is a type of mutual fund that trades like a stock. While mutual funds aren’t technically traded until the end of the day, ETF transactions can be conducted during intraday trading.

“They’re organized in a structure that allows buying shares in an underlying portfolio. That's why you go through an exchange because you have to to go through a broker dealer in order to purchase an ETF. The broker-dealer will purchase the shares in the underlying ETF and the broker-dealer is who keeps up with how many shares you own. The broker-dealer then handles the accounting to show you how many shares you own - which is different than an open-end fund where the transfer agent for the open end fund directly carries your shares at the fund.

They're created the same way as any sort of registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission - you have to file the registration to become effective, and once it’s effective then you can purchase those shares through the broker-dealer.”

Then our panel gets into a discussion about alternative medicinal ETFs and who’s getting into marijuana stocks.

Recession tends to follow when the yield curve reverts back to normal after inversion, rather than during the inversion itself. The Federal Reserve's themselves and their actions have impacted the yield curve over the year and shifts in banking behavior can slow the economy. Changes in economic conditions and market behaviors suggest a potential recession is forthcoming, but don't panic yet, you can't predict the market.

Today we discuss...

  • The inverted yield curve occurs when short-term interest rates exceed long-term rates, which is generally considered abnormal.
  • The Fed's recent rate hikes caused the short end of the yield curve to increase sharply, resulting in an inversion.
  • Banks are less likely to lend during periods of an inverted yield curve because lending at a lower rate than they borrow leads to losses.
  • Changes in how money is created may alter the predictive power of the yield curve inversion as a recession indicator.
  • Household allocation to stocks has recently hit an all-time high, indicating extreme market complacency.
  • Fixed income, traditionally seen as a conservative investment, became the worst-performing asset class in 2022 due to interest rate volatility.
  • Many investors may be unaware of their true risk tolerance, having not experienced significant capital loss since the 2008-2009 financial crisis.
  • Risk in investing includes not just losing money but also the loss of time, as shown by the S&P 500's negative performance from 2000 to 2013.
  • Confidence in the American Dream has significantly eroded since 2012, with fewer people believing hard work will lead to success.
  • Credit card defaults are reaching record highs, surpassing previous peaks seen during the dot-com bubble and the financial crisis.
  • U.S. government spending is projected to increase significantly, with 87% allocated to interest expenses, Social Security, and healthcare.
  • Food prices have reached new highs, contributing to financial stress for consumers.
  • The cost of U.S. federal debt interest has skyrocketed, reaching $1.1 trillion annually, or $3 billion per day.
  • There is concern that the Federal Reserve is not truly independent, with its actions influenced by government, banks, and other powerful entities.
