06 Jan 2023#1: The False Empowerment of Hormonal Birth Control & IUDs and How to Reclaim Your Power via Natural Family Planning00:38:20

So often we’re told the benefits we’ll reap as a result of hormonal birth control and IUDs, but are we ever given informed consent on the physical and emotional risks? How empowering is it to believe your best or only options to plan and prevent pregnancy are from pharmaceuticals that trick your body into believing it’s pregnant or an intrauterine device that can become dislodged?

In this episode, we discuss what real female empowerment looks like when it comes to planning and preventing pregnancy on our own terms without the pill or IUD. You’ll hear about our regrets and past experiences with hormonal birth control, what we know now, and how we empowered ourselves through cycle awareness, fertility signals and data to plan our pregnancies.

Hear what our favorite trusted resources are for natural family planning so you can empower yourself and ditch the hormones and IUDs for good.

Medical Disclaimer: We are not medical professionals. Nothing you've heard in today’s episode should be taken as medial advice. We are simply sharing our experiences, anecdotes and information.

18 Jan 2023#2: Birth Plans: What You Need to Know (& What We Chose and Why!)01:19:55

“I’ll just go with the flow and see what happens!” is not a phrase you will hear from us…at least in regard to giving birth. In this episode, our aim is to remind you of your autonomy in your birth.

We tell you not only what we included in our birth plans but more importantly why we made our choices. We hope to bring awareness to the myriad options you have when it comes to bringing your baby earthside!

Along the way, we share pointers in regard to the format and content of our birth plans, what we changed our minds about, and of course, we can’t leave out the hot topic of newborn interventions.

Although our birth plans were similar, our actual births were wildly different. You will learn about all the options you truly have despite hospital or practitioner protocol or policy, and by the time you finish this rather lengthy episode, we hope you feel inspired and empowered to plan for the birth of dreams, no matter how or where you envision giving birth.

24 Jan 2023#3: Our Birth Stories: Two Very Different Experiences, Two Very Informed Mamas01:19:40

While we both prepped for, and manifested, a home birth, Katherine’s hope for a peaceful out-of-hospital birth took a wild turn after an unexpected medical complication arose and did not stabilize. Hear why she fired her first provider, was fired by her second provider, then switched providers from home birth midwives to an OBGYN a week before her baby boy was born. You will hear how she stood her ground and still exercised her birth rights despite her dwindling options.

You will also hear how April applied everything she learned about physiological birth from months of research and childbirth education, to put mind over body and birth her baby at home despite a very close call during late labor, along with a period of dysfunctional pushing which nearly required a hospital transfer. Find out what April told her back-up OB and how her team of midwives and doulas gave her the clarity and support she needed to get out of her thinking brain and into her primitive brain to bring her baby earth-side.

Our births could not be more different, and we each overcame obstacles even our research and prep could not have prepared us for in advance.

It goes without saying that every mom is grateful to have a healthy baby, however our birth experiences as mothers also matter and have a lasting impact. Knowing your options and having the confidence to speak up can be the difference between an empowered and informed birth and one that leaves you at the mercy of your practitioner’s wishes.

01 Feb 2023#4: Debunking Infant Sleep Myths and the Truth About Bedsharing01:25:31

Infant sleep is one of the most polarizing topics in the baby community, and in true MOTR fashion, we do not hold back.

We break down all the sleep myths including how you can’t “train” your baby to sleep and bed-sharing leads to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (it is actually protective against it!).

Yes we’re biased, however don’t just take it from us; we cite our sources who are the actual experts in this field including James McKenna Ph.D. of “Safe Infant Sleep” and Dr. Sarah Buckley of “Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering.”

We explore the perceived “risks” the predatory infant sleep industry wants you to believe and share the myriad benefits (for mom and baby) of bed-sharing, and if that's not your cup of tea, co-sleeping.

For sleep deprived moms, we discuss our favorite creative ways to catch up on sleep that do not involve sleep training your baby, watching the clock or letting your baby "cry it out".

Oh, and we answer a couple of interesting questions our listeners submitted- we've got your backs!

We recognize infant sleep is not a one-size-fits-all approach for every family, however it’s also not as black and white as putting your baby in a crib “drowsy but awake”.

03 Mar 2023#6: A Thoughtful Conversation with April’s Midwife Amanda01:12:56

April’s midwife Amanda made a significant impact on her home birth experience, so we had to invite her on the pod to get a glimpse into her "why" and hear her perspectives on physiologic birth and more!

We kick things off by learning about how Amanda got her start in midwifery. Amanda shares her philosophy on physiologic birth and interventions during pregnancy. The three of us discuss our theories on why women and society as a whole doubts our bodies’ ability to birth naturally. Amanda tells us about her least favorite interventions for completely healthy moms with normal pregnancies, and more importantly, why these are her least favorite. Because at MOTR we are all about bodily autonomy and empowered decision-making, we are huge fans of HBACs (home birth after cesarean) and VBACs (vaginal birth after cesarean). We learn about some of the implications and roadblocks involved in being a midwife in the state of Georgia vs. other states and share some ideas for how to find an HBAC-supportive practitioner. Also, we can’t ignore the elephant in the room— at least among the crunchy mom community— and that is the rise in MEDwives and dwindling of midwives. We each hypothesize why medwives are becoming more ubiquitous, and no; they’re no longer primarily tied to the hospital system. We wrap up our conversation with a rapid-fire Q&A from YOU, our loyal instagram followers.

17 Mar 2023#7: Beyond the ‘Pop’: Improving Perinatal Outcomes with Holistic Chiro Dr. Madalyn Turner01:05:11

Nothing is off the table- pun intended- with holistic chiropractor Dr. Madalyn Turner. In this episode, we learn how she’s able to improve pregnancy outcomes (think shorter labor, for one), thanks to her training and expertise in perinatal chiropractic care. Kat, Julian, and even Erik have all seen Dr. Maddy throughout different seasons of life.

We learn all about the contributors and symptoms of nervous system dysregulation, the benefits of the Webster technique, how babies as young as one day old can benefit from seeing a chiro, and Dr. Maddy debunks myths about what chiropractic care actually is. Dr. Maddy also shares what inspired her to delve into the Fertility Awareness Method and Reiki.

As a staunch medical freedom advocate, we ask Dr. Maddy her take on why some medical professionals and birth workers in the community had a disconnect between what they learned in school about how our immune systems work and how that translated into their practice with masking and v@xing.

Oh, and we talk about the scams behind insurance companies and why Dr. Maddy’s practice is cash pay by design. You won't want to miss this one!

31 Mar 2023#8: Masks. We love to hate them. Here’s why.00:57:33

We are over masks and so are 96% of you, our lovely instagram followers. If you truly follow the science, then you are over them too.

In this episode, we channel one of our core tenets at MOTR: critical thinking. We discuss the moments when we woke up and pulled the mask off for good, why we refuse to wear them, when and if we make exceptions, and we share some personal anecdotes along the way. We also share two of the wildest answers we received from you all on Instagram when we ran a poll about mask wearing.

07 Apr 2023#9: Maternal Instincts, Wisdom, and Challenging the Status Quo with Kat’s Mom Robin01:03:19

Today's very special guest is none other than Kat's mom, Robin Kier! As a mom of 4 kids (two from her first marriage and two step-kids from her second marriage), a former R.N. of 15 years and a former flight attendant of nearly 20 years, Robin brings a wealth of maternal wisdom, mom-tuition, and insights to the table.

We discuss everything from what drove her into early retirement from the flight attendant career she loved, her takeaways from nursing school and the changes she is witnessing now, the weirdness of the Gardasil and flu jabs, her stance on masking and the "C" jab, and how she knew real animal fats were always healthier than seed oils and fake "butter" and margarine way before it was cool to know that. As usual, we wrap up with questions from our instagram followers.

Thank you for listening!

05 May 2023#11: Dumb Doctor Dogma and Evidence-Based BS with Dr. Stu Fischbein of Birthing Instincts01:53:53

The moms sit down with the one and only Dr. Stu Fischbein of the Birthing Instincts podcast. Like April and Kat, Dr. Stu is 100% unfiltered, uncensored, and unafraid of challenging the establishment. This episode highlights some of our favorite Dr. Stu-isms. We hear his take on:

  • How and why the obstetrics model of care is broken, stemming all the way from Residency to Peer Reviewed papers
  • Fully trusting our bodies at every stage of womanhood
  • Why for the first time in history the powers that be are recommending untested jabs on pregnant women
  • “Standard of care” and “informed consent”
  • What the Arrive Trial is and why it’s bogus
  • Why it’s valid to have a healthy dose of skepticism in regard to ACOG guidelines and medical journal conclusions
  • Vitamin K shot: relative vs. actual risk, the Vitamin K drops, and more
  • Why vaginal breech and twin births have been on the decline
  • How women who desire to have an at-home breech or twin birth can find resources
  • Why more women are turning to free/wild birth
  • “Stage 1 thinking”
  • What makes the OB profession unique (hint: it’s not the ability to perform a c-section)
  • How fear is the most powerful driver behind decisions
  • “Cognitive dissonance”
  • What unethical medical care looks like

18 Aug 2023#17: Elimination Communication & The Dirty Diaper Industry01:06:58

The MOTR moms are back! In today's episode, we welcome Nicole Cheever who is a mom of three, EC (Elimination Communication) connoisseur, and co-host of the Go Diaper Free podcast for an illuminating and humbling conversation on all things EC.
Nicole reveals how and when the diaper industry began prying its avaricious claws into busy moms, and how the downward spiral our modern lifestyle rooted in convenience culture has had detrimental psychological and physical impacts when we choose to leave kids in diapers well into toddlerhood and beyond.

EC doesn't have to be this all or nothing idealistic and unattainable endeavor that only crunchy full-time stay-at-home moms can accomplish. Just the opposite, actually! Nicole dissects the assumption that prematurely pottying kids is "traumatic".

After listening to today's episode, you'll hopefully feel assured that regardless of your prior traumas or pitfalls with EC'ing and potty-training and despite your children's ages, you can take simple actions and make mindset shifts to successfully EC and ultimately fully potty train starting right now.

08 Sep 2023#18: Dissecting the Lancet Breastfeeding Series: An exposé on the commercial milk formula industry01:40:34

In today’s highly-anticipated episode, we call out the most riveting takeaways from the Lancet’s Breastfeeding Series.
What you will learn:

  • The history of CMF (commercial milk formula)
  • What “the code” is, why it’s not enforced, and how CMF manufacturers  circumvent or directly violate the code at the expense of mothers’ and babies’ health
  • The specific Machiavellian marketing strategies that CMF conglomerates implement globally in order to capitalize on, exploit, and hoodwink women into believing formula is better for their babies
  • What is at stake for moms, babies, and society when breastfeeding is replaced by formula
  • The myth and misleading nature of the push for “gender equality” & our thoughts on positive vs. harmful feminism and its ties to corporatism, the schism of the nuclear family, and how it all relates to how we feed our babies
  • The precise playbook CMFs use to dupe mothers and undermine breastfeeding
  • How “experts” spanning from midwives & nurses to doctors & scientists have been bought and paid for and cannot be blindly trusted

If this episode left you feeling angry at CMFs, you're not alone. We leave you with the our call to action (and The Lancet’s) for what can be done to help promote and support breastfeeding.

What ideas do you have to promote exclusive  breastfeeding so  women are no longer taken advantage of by greedy companies whose claims are completely unsubstantiated by “the science”? Email us or send us an audio note/DM on instagram.

22 Sep 2023#19: Stay at Home Mom or Work from Home? You Asked, We Answered!01:17:39

Since we’re not fans of the term “stay-at-home mom” because of its implications that the mom doesn’t really “work” but rather just chills out at home, we’re comparing our lives as a full-time mom at home vs. a full-time working (in the traditional corporate sense) from home mom. That was a mouthful!

Context: Kat resigned from her high-pressure, corporate career two months prior to her son’s birth and never returned to work- by choice- and he is now 14 months old (at the time this episode aired). April returned to her full-time corporate career in a work-from-home arrangement when her daughter was 4 months old. April’s daughter is weeks away from her first birthday (also at the time of this episode airing).

We discuss the highs and lows, pros and cons, what we are looking forward to the most, and what we are grateful for with our respective situations. We also share our tips for moms on how to vet high quality and trustworthy childcare at the end of this episode.

06 Oct 2023#20: How Our Friendships & Relationships Changed Post-Motherhood01:05:57

Per your request, we recorded this raw, introspective, humble and at times humorous look into how some of our closest friendships shifted- for better or worse- once we became moms.

We share the awkward, odd, and redemptive friendship renaissances and demises. Friendships aside, we analyze how the relationships with our husbands changed since becoming parents. Do we believe our children “come first” or we as a couple “come first?”

You’ll have to tune in to find out. Lastly, we reflect on how we see our moms differently since becoming moms ourselves.

20 Oct 2023#21: Female Erasure in the Birth World & Risks of Assisted Reproductive Technology with Isabella Malbin01:06:37

Isabella Malbin, the host of the Whose Body Is Itpodcast, is also a life-coach, hypnotist and former "liberal" feminist turned radical truth teller.

Isabella shares what initially peaked her years ago; euphemistic, sanitized terms like “belly birth” in lieu of cesarean section is just one example.

We hear why she was kicked out of her Fertility Awareness Training program and why her Doula training program found her vernacular rooted in truth and refusal to erase “women” and “mother” from her vocabulary to be a threat.

Why none of us on this recording use pronouns.

Isabella theorizes on the root cause of the uprising of female erasure in language amongst most birth workers. Why is “inclusive language” actually more harmful than innocuous? Isn’t there a seat for everyone at the table?

We debate the question “just because you can do something, does it mean you should?” when it comes to ART (assisted reproductive technology).

Why do some cultures justify surrogacy whereas others accept pregnancy may not be in the cards?

Are guilt and shame actually healthy reactions to our choices instead of emotions we should aim to avoid?

Donate to Isabella’s friend Marva Zohar’s nonprofit, Land Where Women Heal, so Israeli survivors of the Hamas attacks can receive life-saving services.

03 Nov 2023#22: Optimizing Fertility and Pregnancy Outcomes with Anisa Woodall, MS CN00:56:46

We learn from Anisa Woodall, MS CN:

  • Why vegan and vegetarian diets (particularly non ovo-lacto) are not only unethical during preconception and pregnancy but also dangerous to mom and baby.
  • What prompted Anisa to transition from plant-based to animal based once she entered nutrition school.
  • Why certain “health foods” like açaí aren’t actually as nutrient dense as we believe and which nutrients we need to prioritize for optimal fertility instead.
  • How much epigenetic impact both parents  have on their future baby during the preconception period through their diet, lifestyle and environment verses what their genetics will dictate.
  • Which specific lifestyle changes women actually need to optimize to increase their odds of having a healthy pregnancy on their desired timeline.

Be sure to check out Anisa’s preconception checklist to discover what you should do in the 3-6 months preconception period to optimize fertility and pregnancy outcomes!

06 Dec 2023#24: How and Why We Should Homeschool with Teva Johnstone01:01:46

Teva Johnstone of the @RebelParents Instagram account (currently on a social media detox but still very active in real life and via her courses on her website) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Psychotherapist, and Clinical Supervisor in the state of California.

We explore topics with Teva like:

  • Why homeschool at all? Aren’t there good private and Montessori schools?
  • What are the problems with the public school system today?
  • Which widely-taught ideologies are harmful for children?
  • Which attributes make a family a good candidate for homeschool?
  • Who is homeschool not appropriate for?
  • Can kids actually go to college if they’re homeschooled?
  • What if parents work a full-time 9-5 or are single/co-parenting; how can they make homeschooling work?
  • How can parents continue to homeschool once the academic subject matter becomes too challenging beyond their scope of comprehension?

17 Nov 2023#23: Informed Consent and Thinking Critically about Pharma & Vaccines with Just The Inserts01:19:15

We are honored and humbled to interview none other than Just the Inserts who up until just a few weeks ago has been fully anonymous since the inception of her Instagram account 3 years ago. Now, she is allowing the public to hear her voice, and although we had the pleasure of seeing her face on camera for this very special recording, we are respectfully shielding her face from our social media for her and her family’s safety at this time.

We learn from Just The Inserts:

  • What her personal “why” is and what inspired her to start her account
  • Why Instagram initially took down her account despite how she only shared what the package inserts say verbatim from the FDA
  • Her daughter’s vitamin K shot adverse reaction plus Katherine’s vitamin K shot anecdote with her midwives
  • Why America’s medical system is actually socialized rather than capitalized like most are led to believe
  • Why sharing objective truths such as the literal package inserts for pharmaceuticals is “controversial” even if all personal biases are omitted
  • What’s in store for the future of Just The Inserts?

15 Dec 2023#25: An Exposè On Vaccines and Pediatrics with THE Dr. Paul Thomas01:05:19

We sit down with Dr. Paul Thomas (yes, that one!) of The Vaccine-Friendly Plan for an uncensored discussion on vaccines in childhood and pregnancy.  Dr. Paul divulges answers to all the vaccine questions you wish you could ask your captured OBGYN, pediatrician, and/or MEDwife.

WATCH the video interview here.

  • Dr. Paul breaks down the axiom “safe and effective.”
  • What is safe yet not effective? What is effective yet not safe?
  • What about all those vaccines your OB or MEDwife is recommending you receive during pregnancy? How safe are they?
  • Is vaccine “shedding” a thing, and should we be concerned? How does shedding work?
  • Why Dr. Paul can no longer in good faith recommend his delayed vaccine plan and what changed.
  • Dr. Paul explains the conclusions discovered from his famous meta analysis.
  • He demystifies the financial corruption behind the Pediatrics profession.

Dr. Paul also shares his story and why he was pressured into forfeiting his medical license despite doing no harm. He imparts sage advice for anyone desiring to become a pediatrician today.

29 Dec 2023#26: A Retrospective on Motherhood Thus Far: Where We Changed Our Minds01:31:48

As we approach 2024 and our almost one year anniversary of co-hosting Moms Off The Record podcast, we humbly and candidly reflect on all the things we either changed our minds about or would do differently with baby #2.

We talk about what it means to be “above the line” vs. “below the line” as per “The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership

We each share topics about which we’re okay with being self-righteous versus ones where we’re open-minded and curious.

Find out where we changed our minds and why we would take a different approach with:

  • Exercising during pregnancy and postpartum
  • The pushing phase during birth
  • Daycare
  • Showing our children publicly online
  • Bottles
  • Sleep
  • Snacks
  • Elimination Communication
  • Oral ties assessments

12 Jan 2024#27: Navigating Unmedicated Birth In the Hospital and Mompreneurship with Fierce Lizzie01:17:33

We kick off season 2 of Moms Off The Record and sit down with our friend  and fellow radical mom, Lizzie Bolliger who you probably know as “Fierce Lizzie” to hear about her three births, what inspired her to leave her day job as a teacher and transition into a career as a doula on her terms.

We discuss the difference between “natural” and physiologic birth misnomers, whether any intervention is “natural,” circumventing hospital policies and rules, how we all really feel about the anatomy ultrasound, the truth about placenta previa diagnosis, and the difference between feeling empowered and being empowered.

Lizzie also shares a typical day in her life starting from the crack of dawn when she wakes up until 9pm when she calls it a night. As a business owner, doula, and podcaster who also homeschools her three children; how does she manage to juggle it all? She shares her mom and business woman hacks.

26 Jan 2024#28: Interpregnancy Intervals / Child Spacing: The Evidence, Your Preferences, & Our Opinions01:17:20

Some women want two under two so they can “get the baby phase over with” in one fell swoop. Other women intentionally space their children 3+ years apart for various reasons such as socioeconomic and health.

Whether you are currently considering conscious or unconscious conception, the choice of how far apart to space your babies can impact you in ways beyond what you may have imagined.

So, what is the best interpregnancy interval between children? Is there even such a thing? Is one length more optimal than another? There are both objective and subjective answers behind this enigma.

We polled our loyal followers in our Instagram stories back in November about what the “perfect” age gap is between children, and we share those results along with your reasoning.

We also share the risks, benefits, pros and cons of short and long interpregnancy intervals. Did any of these surprise you?

If you are curious on what the latest evidence says about optimal pregnancy spacing, we read excerpts from the “Pregnancy Spacing” chapter in Lily Nichols’ book “Real Food for Pregnancy.

The bottom line is- like everything that has to do with motherhood choices- only YOU will know the best interpregnancy interval for your body and your family. There are several factors that need to be considered beyond your and your baby’s physical health and well being- all of which we unpack during this episode.

09 Feb 2024#29: How We Approached Baby-Led Weaning: Part 100:46:41

Hear all about the MOTR approach to baby-led weaning. In this episode, we share our takes on:

  • what we think of baby-led weaning
  • how it’s different from simply “starting solids”
  • overcoming obstacles mothers face when considering solids (fear of choking, allergens, breastfeeding relationships, etc).
  • why we don’t care about added sodium for infants and what that evidence actually says (hint: it’s inconclusive)
  • how we feel about purée pouches and stereotypical “baby food”
  • why your pediatrician is not the expert on baby-led weaning
  • signs of readiness and why anything under 6 months old is too young to start solids

Stay tuned for part 2 for an even deeper dive on meals we offer our children, BLW hacks, staying the course during travel and dining out, and so much more.

08 Mar 2024#31: Encouraging Talkative Babies and Toddlers with Speech and Language Pathologist Maria Gianfilippo01:08:46

We hear from Speech and Language Pathologist Maria Gianfilippo, Founder of Organic Speech Therapy, about what it takes to raise talkative babies and toddlers.

First, it’s important to know what the milestones and averages are in regard to spoken words by specific age targets. Yes, every child does develop at his or her own pace; however,  within *reason*.

We reflect upon the main contributors to a burgeoning vocabulary versus speech delays that should raise red flags.

We learn about optimal environments and lifestyles parents can embody in order to maximize their child’s communication capacity.

We’ll discuss why TV shows are not an appropriate substitute for 1:1 human interaction when it comes to teaching our children. It's a tough pill to swallow, but even the "educational programs" are not ideal. TV is a tool and we need to treat it as such.

You’ll also hear about the “wait and see” approach still recommended by pediatricians and the main reasons why speech delays have been on a significant rise over the last few years.

Learn about the benefits of bi-, tri-, and quadlingualism.

05 Apr 2024#33: Ancestral Living and Nourishing Our Families with Hilda Labrada Gore01:10:09

Hilda Labradore Gore is the host and producer of Wise Traditions— the official Weston A. Price Foundation podcast.

Hilda brings her innate positivity, decades-long wisdom on ancestral practices, and exuberant demeanor to the virtual table where the three of us discuss topics such as:

  • How do we know which food movements du jour are truly right for us? Raw Milk and beef liver are all the rage now, but before that everyone was talking about Paleo, Keto, Pegan, Raw before 4pm and the list goes on.
  • Should we be concerned with the latest measles "outbreak"?
  • How can we embrace the "80/20" lifestyle with what we know about artificial food dyes, glyphosate, and other false foods that hijack our taste buds?
  • What are Hilda's favorite go-to simple, nutrient-dense snacks for young children and dinners for the entire family?
  • What is one simple way we can deepen our connection and strengthen our relationship with our children?
  • How we can nourish our families outside of diet?
  • Food fads that will not age will such as the normalization of seed oils and lab-grown meat!

We absolutely loved our conversation with Hilda! As her IG handle suggests, she has a completely holistic perspective on caring for ourselves and our families, and her warmth beams during this interview. We hope you gleaned as much inspiration and wisdom from this upbeat and enlightening conversation as we did.

19 Apr 2024#34: Kat is Pregnant With Baby #2!00:58:44

The (K)at is finally out of the bag! Kat is expecting baby #2!! So, we of course had to divulge the details. It's too exciting not to share! We answer some of our listener questions submitted via instagram stories as well.

03 May 2024#35: Thriving As a Single, Homeschooling Mom with Postpartum Doula Oni of Butterfly Birthcare01:08:00
Oni, an Atlanta-based postpartum doula and single, homeschooling mom to two daughters aged eight and ten reveals her methods for making her non-traditional lifestyle work for her rather than against her. We loved the gentle wisdom and powerful reminders woven into this interview and we hope they resonate just as much with you.

We delve into concepts such as:
  • the importance of veering away from the martyrdom mindset in motherhood
  • Oni's abandonment of the feminist movement and her calling to homeschool her two girls
  • how single motherhood does not have to pose a barrier to homeschooling and/or your career
  • how we women need to lean on our local community in person, not just online, for holistic support
  • the delicate balance of setting boundaries and showing up as her authentic self as a postpartum doula while also staying open-minded to clients' varying needs
  • the debacle of the night shift as a postpartum doula— does it help or hinder the breastfeeding relationship within the mother-baby dyad?
  • how we don't have to and should not try to be everything to everyone when serving clients in our business
  • how to know when it's the right time to take an overnight trip without your little one

17 May 2024#36: Gestational Diabetes and Hypertension, Hormonal Birth Control, Male Factor Fertility, and Recurrent Miscarriage with RDN Lily Nichols | Setting The Record Straight01:21:29

We sit down with the one and only Lily Nichols, RDN & CDE— author of Real Food for Gestational Diabetes, Real Food for Pregnancy, and  her latest work, Real Food for Fertility, to set the record straight and debunk myths about some of the most common preconception and pregnancy routine practices and complications. The nutritional choices we make do have an impact on all of these areas, and the mainstream medical paradigm is slow to adapt, per usual.

In this episode we discussed:

  • What is the real deal with the infamous glucose test? Why is the artificial orange drink a.k.a. Glucola the “gold standard” when testing women for Gestational Diabetes, and what are the shortcomings with the 50g, 75g, and 100g screening tests?
  • How can Gestational Diabetes be managed, and what is the problem with the mainstream medical model’s current guidelines for GD management?
  • When it comes to preconception and fertility, we of course have to mention The Pill. What must women know about their fertility when coming off the pill, and how does hormonal birth control impact future fertility outcomes and nutrient stores?
  • What is recurrent miscarriage and how can women uncover the root cause?
  • Male Factor Fertility— what is one thing all men can do across the board to contribute to the fertility equation, since we know they play a role in this too?
  • What is the biggest scam with mainstream advice given for gestational hypertension, and what guidance should women follow instead?

31 May 2024#37: Potty Training with Go Diaper Free Expert Nicole Cheever01:33:51

Since our last episode featuring Nicole Cheever aired nearly a year ago during which we discussed Elimination Communication, we're thrilled to welcome her back to exclusively discuss potty training!

This is not your typical potty training pep talk. Nicole breaks down potty training the Go Diaper Free way. This method is aligned with how our wise women ancestors successfully got their babies out of diapers no later than 18 months old without bribes, sticker charts, shame, and coercion.

How and why did we get to where we are today— a time when diapering our children well beyond 2-3 years old has been normalized and in some cases even encouraged? What are the real signs of "readiness" when it comes to potty training?

14 Jun 2024#38: Fired Into Freedom with Kristen / Awake Nurse Mama: Vaccines and the NICU01:33:48

Kristen is a former NICU nurse of nearly a decade who saw some things she cannot unsee. Her great awakening transpired during the COVID madness, and she does not hold back when we ask her what she witnessed behind the scenes in the NICU and in the hospital setting as a whole, as well as what she bravely endured with her very own children.

Kristen walks us through the vaccine injuries she witnessed amongst her three children, and what she wishes she knew as a former NICU nurse prior to becoming "awake".

We find out what parents of NICU babies need to know and how they can best arm themselves prior to the daunting NICU experience. Find out how the NICU does not practice informed consent and which shots are routinely administered to your baby regardless of your baby's weight or condition.

  • Which states are the best in regard to exercising medical freedom according to Kristen?
  • What are the most unethical and non-evidence based practices Kristen witnessed imposted upon our most vulnerable population— premature babies— during her time in the NICU?
  • And a question many of you have posed to us directly in email: what's the best vaccine protocol for a premature baby?

28 Jun 2024#39: Screen Time is The New Drug | Screens Are Destroying Childhood with Melanie Hempe of ScreenStrong01:12:55

Most holistic-minded moms already know screen time is objectively bad and try to limit it or only rely on it as a brief, last-resort. But, just how bad is it really?

Melanie Hempe, mother of four and the founder of the non-profit ScreenStrong, keeps it 100% real with us when divulging the truth about the way screen time is robbing our children of a healthy and happy childhood.

  • What effects do interacting with a device have whether it’s a tablet, iPhone, or television on a child’s developing brain, and why should parents think twice about when and whether to introduce screens to their children?
  • Is there such a thing as “good” types of screen time or screens in moderation?
  • What about low-stimulating shows for short periods of time?

We of course also had to discuss the alarming, modern phenomenon of children glued to iPads while out at restaurants.

In our tech-obsessed society, is it even realistic to expect parents to forego screens for their children such as refusing to give children smartphones for the first 18 years of life?

12 Jul 2024#40 "Back Off Bobbie" Campaign and Modern Motherhood with Radical Moms Union's Andrea Haskins00:48:25

We were joined by 1/2 of the Radical Moms Union, Andrea Haskins, who gives insight into the impetus behind the recent "Back Off Bobbie" campaign initiated with the help of RMU partner Natasha Vargas-Cooper and backed by heaps of concerned, empowered women.

  • What does it mean to be a "radical" mom nowadays, and what is so radical about the way we mother?
  • What is going on with the nefarious motives of certain formula companies i.e. Bobbie and their infamous marketing campaigns?
  • Low supply seems like such a common perceived and pathologized issue, but how many women have real as opposed to perceived low milk supply, and what are the physiological factors that actually cause it?
  • What's up with the social media trends that seem to disparage motherhood for clicks and views?

26 Jul 2024#41: The Choice to Freebirth (Again) After Loss with Alex Ann Cefalu01:08:11

Since we have yet to unravel the profound topic of pregnancy loss, particularly from a sovereign woman's perspective, we invite you to witness Alex's moving story of the loss of her daughter Lila in the moments after birth.

Alex chose to experience a wild pregnancy— a pregnancy outside the obstetric industrial complex, devoid of ultrasounds, blood work, measuring, tracking, and testing— and despite the emotional suffering she endured as a result of her tragic loss, she explains why she would not hesitate to proceed with another wild pregnancy and freebirth the second time around.

We discuss themes such as the fine line between birth and death, how nobody and no technology can "save" us, the way our society views miscarriage and stillbirth in the hospital vs. at home, setting boundaries with well-meaning yet fearful friends and family, and we hear Alex's theory on the likely cause of death of her sweet baby girl.

Follow Alex on instagram and DM her to join her virtual loss support group.

Regardless of whether you've experienced a miscarriage or stillbirth or where you chose to give birth, you are welcome to join Alex's support group.

09 Aug 2024#42: Birth Control, Cycle Syncing and Tracking, FAM, and Declining Sperm Counts with Lisa Hendrickson-Jack01:23:46

Lisa Hendrickson-Jack is a certified Fertility Awareness Educator and Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner who trains women’s health practitioners to use their menstrual cycle as a vital sign in their practices. She is the founder of the Fertility Awareness Mastery Mentorship program. She is the author of three bestselling books: Real Food For Fertility (co-authored with Lily Nichols), The Fifth Vital Sign, and the Fertility Awareness Mastery Charting Workbook.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Why the non-hormonal IUD really isn't so benign despite some women preferring this birth control method.
  • The science behind how cervical fluid is a powerful indicator of your overall health and cervical cell health
  • The mechanics of how ovulation works from estrogen levels, LH and follicle ripeness
  • Why the feminist movement's programming that men and women should be equal in every respect has backfired specifically as it relates to how we move through life during the different phases in our cycle and throughout the feminine cycles of our lifetime (menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause).
  • Why reliance on cycle tracking apps alone as a way to plan or prevent pregnancy is not sufficient and what the best marker of fertility actually is.
  • What is common vs. what is normal in regard to ovulation and our menstrual cycles
  • Why sperm counts have been on the decline since the 1940s and by how much
  • The specific role men play in the fertility equation and just how much agency both men and women have in regard to ameliorating their fertility outcomes through lifestyle choices
  • Considerations to ponder in regard to IVF

Gentle Parenting. Permissive Parenting. Authoritative Parenting. The misunderstanding and noise behind parenting styles is confusing and stressing out an entire generation of well-intentioned but misinformed parents.

That's where Rebecca Giannini helps! Rebecca is a mother of two, relationship and parent coach, and founder of The Present Parents.

In this episode, Rebecca breaks down the four principles for healthy relationships:

  • Everyone deserves to be listened to when they’re struggling
  • Everyone deserves to be spoken to with respect, even when the speaker is upset

  • Everyone deserves their boundaries to be respected

We also reveal some personal parenting struggles we have been battling and seek Rebecca's sage guidance in resolving them through the lens of her principles.

06 Sep 2024#44: Dying for Artificial Food Dyes and Greenwashing Scams with Morgan (@VeryCrunchyMama)01:24:10

Morgan a.k.a. @VeryCrunchyMama unveils some hard truths about the correlations between the consumption of artificial food dyes— which are sadly ubiquitous and hidden in foods you would never suspect— and children's behavior and chronic disease.

We discuss the deceptive name changes that recently went into effect with these toxic dyes as well as what each of us would do in a scenario where our children were offered food dyes.

Towards the end, Morgan differentiates between "cleanwashing" vs. "greenwashing" and how to keep it simple when it comes to transitioning away from toxic household chemicals and into a lifestyle abundant in minimalism and holistic health.

04 Oct 2024#46: Kat’s Sovereign, Intuitive Homebirth After Cesarean (HBAC): The Birth Story of Baby #202:00:36

Hello, friends! We’re back just the two of us like old times.

Kat kicks off this episode reflecting on how wildly different her first birth with her son was compared to her redemptive, sovereign homebirth outside the medical industrial complex with her daughter just 26 months later.

Kat’s initiation into motherhood in 2022 involved bait-and-switches, homebirth medwifery sabotage, and an unhealthy fixation on blood pressure resulting in fear mongering, a distrust and pathology of birth, an unnecessary hospital transfer, false pre-eclampsia diagnosis, and ultimately a c-section.

Fast forward 17 months when Kat discovered she was pregnant with her second baby after just the first try (thanks Anisa Woodall!)

Kat recounts her journey from deprogramming and unlearning everything she thought she ever knew about birth, to becoming fully embodied, taking radical responsibility for her birth choices, and completely surrendering to and trusting every step of the process.

All of this laid the groundwork for having a mother-led, intuitive, homebirth in the absence of any licensed provider in favor of the unconditional support of her husband and radical birthkeeper Ali. NO cervical checks, membrane sweeps, inductions, doing anything to “get labor going,” ultrasounds, Doppler, suggestions or threats of a hospital transfer, coached pushing, or management of the third stage of labor.

Kat also discusses the process of obtaining a birth certificate when you choose to give birth outside of the system (if that's the route you wish to take) and answers questions you posed about the birth on Instagram.

01 Nov 2024#47: Ecstatic Birth and Cervical Orgasms with Lauren Segalla01:09:00

Lauren Segalla was a Labor & Delivery nurse until one day she had an epiphany after going through the motions of her job numbly on autopilot during the immediate aftermath of fetal demise of a patient. After that wake up call, she knew she was destined for something different; something bigger.

Today, Lauren is an expert in guiding women through feeling more in touch with their bodies, literally. As a result, the women Lauren works with not only maximize the relationship with themselves and their partners but also how they move through the birth portal.

15 Nov 2024#48: Being Versus Doing When Attending Birth with Birthkeeper Ali Coulas01:35:49

Kat’s Birthkeeper Ali Coulas joins us today. We learn about her spiritual path to becoming a Labor & Delivery nurse as well as what led her out of the system and into the sovereign birth world, where Kat was her first sovereign birth she attended. We venture to answer questions like:

  • What does it actually mean to “hold space” for women?
  • How can birthkeepers hold just enough space without encroaching too closely on a woman or just being a distant fly on the wall?
  • How do yin (feminine) and yang (masculine) energies manifest themselves in labor and birth, and what does this mean for the type of birth we can expect to experience?

We also delve into Kat’s false pre-eclampsia diagnosis which Ali discovered after reviewing Kat’s medical records from her first birth. You won't want to miss this! Unfortunately, birth sabotage happens all the time in the system, and you get to hear a few stories of this blatant practice in today's episode.

10 Jan 2025#52: Infant Formula is Literally Killing Babies in Nigeria with Mandolyn Crotts of Carry Them Ministries01:05:54

Mandolyn Crotts, mom of two and founder of Carry Them Ministries in Nigeria, revealed the horrifying, fatal obstetric practices, fear of breastfeeding and dangerous promotion of infant formula which is responsible for the demise of so many babies.

Here in America we often hear trite slogan such as “fed as best!” to make women feel better about formula usage. However in a place like Nigeria, formula feeding is actually killing babies, and breastfeeding saves lives.

We learn about the heartbreaking lies women have been told from fearful and misogynistic doctors and nurses who know nothing about birth or breastfeeding. Separation of motherbaby from day 1 is not only common, but it’s extremely normal. Even skin-to-skin is viewed as dangerous.

There is a light at the end of this dark tunnel, and that is the success stories of babies who transformed from “failure to thrive” as a result of risky formula consumption, to full on thriving thanks to Mandolyn and team’s lactation support which includes some unconventional methods often overlooked here in the Western world.

And of course we couldn’t ignore the current culture wars, especially in light of La Leche League’s woke inclusion policies. Hear what Mandolyn has to say about “inclusive” breastfeeding vernacular in a place like Nigeria where babies are literally on the brink of death.

If you are feeling inspired by Mandolyn’s mission, please consider making a financial donation at carrythem.org.

13 Dec 2024#50: Matrescence: Surrendering to Motherhood with Holly Hunter, RN01:08:38

Matrescence is defined as the process of becoming a mother, however this is a term that hardly anyone has ever heard of; even women who have recently become mothers.

Holly, mother of two, women’s circle leader, and former ICU nurse reflects on the experiences that led to her deep appreciation for and curiosity of matrescence. Our fast-paced, modern, industrial, Western culture tells us to snap back just weeks after giving birth, however brain scans will tell us this is actually physically impossible to do.

Everyone knows what to expect during puberty when a girl morphs into a woman, however nobody talks about what to expect during the next major transition from maiden to mother or even the final major shift from motherhood to perimenopause and finally menopause.

In similar fashion to last year, your two favorite moms reminisce and unpack big lessons learned from our second year of motherhood. A couple of big highlights to call out are April’s departure from the corporate world and into her dream role as full-time, stay-at-home mom to Eden and Kat’s transition from one to two children.

This reflection is all about humility and recognizing the true fruits of motherhood.

Tune in if you want to hear the rawness and realness from our 2nd year as mothers and co-hosts, and what we'd do differently next go 'round!

24 Jan 2025#53: No Child Is Born In The Wrong Body with Pamela Garfield-Jaeger, LCSW01:32:37

Pamela “came out” as “the truthful therapist” a few years ago on the basis of her simply speaking the truth. Not HER truth, but rather the truth. This of course offended many (unsurprisingly); however, through her commitment to bust myths propagated by the transhumanist agenda which preys upon our vulnerable and impressionable youth, she has successfully forged her own path as a trailblazer for other therapists who are not woke and equally committed to helping children accept the body they were born into rather than affirming a lie.

07 Feb 2025#54: What The “Experts” Won’t Tell You About Vaccines and Natural Immunity with Toxicologist Ashley Everly01:27:33

Mom of two (including one who experienced a vaccine injury), toxicologist, and creator of the *must read*, comprehensive Vaccine Guide drops some jaw-dropping bombshells that will make you think twice about the safety, efficacy, ethics, and necessity of these routine shots.

We talk about the tragic human sacrifices who were callously exploited for the sake of growing viruses in aborted fetal cells. The ingredients in vaccines will make your stomach churn— and no, we’re not just talking about the well-known and widely discussed neurotoxic aluminum.

We also discuss the superiority of natural immunity verses artificial immunity via vaccination and the longterm benefit of allowing our bodies to encounter sickness in the wild without synthetic interference. Specifically, we learn about which cancers you are at a lesser risk of having as a result of acquiring natural immunity from certain "vaccine preventable" illnesses.

You’ll hear us talk about the role breastmilk antibodies play from the start of life as well as the importance of honoring the divine order of growth from a spiritual standpoint.

Despite the benefits we acknowledge that homeopathy provides, we talk about why we are against homeoprophylaxis as a “safer” alternative to vaccines. We also learn why vitamin D supplementation is not only pointless but also to some degree harmful.

This conversation is sure to make your head spin in the best way!

21 Feb 2025#55: The Bioethical and Medical Risks of Big Fertility: Surrogacy, IVF, and Sperm Donation with Jennifer Lahl01:09:09

Today’s guest, Jennifer Lahl, is the founder of The Center for Bioethics and Culture Network. Lahl couples her 25 years of experience as a pediatric critical care nurse, a hospital administrator, and a senior-level nursing manager with a deep passion to speak up for those who have no voice.

Women are often sold on surrogacy, IVF, and sperm donation as either a beautiful way to help a family in need or the best solution to their fertility issues. The problems with the solutions Big Fertility pushes extend beyond a lack of informed consent; there are not only significant medical risks for moms and their future children (which are often downplayed or not mentioned at all) as well as bioethical concerns which many have never even considered until well after consenting to one of these reproduction methods.

If we continue on this transhumanist trajectory, we can expect so see the normalization and encouragement of artificial eggs and wombs.

On the bright side, the tides are turning. Countries are waking up to the harms of some of these practices and setting firm boundaries to protect women and children. Some countries, like America, unfortunately still operate like the Wild West and put the wellbeing of mothers and children last at the expense of the desires of intended parents. Thanks to spreading awareness, women are realizing they have other, more biologically-supportive and ethical options when it comes to starting a family.

07 Mar 2025#56: Can You Be Friends if You Don’t Share The Same Values or Beliefs?01:00:49

Back in our original fashion exchanging our uncensored opinions between just the two of us, we examine whether it is possible to maintain friendships with people who see the world through a different lens.

We analyze when it is possible and even encouraged to maintain friendships with people who have opposing viewpoints versus when this feat proves to be a fruitless effort.

We share personal anecdotes which illustrate when our differences with others have brought us closer together and when these fundamental differences have driven us farther apart, and if that means the end of the friendship for good.

We philosophize about the impact topics like politics and medical freedom have over our friendships and whether it matters if your closest friends are virtual or in person.

In an age of dogma and division, we emphasize the lost art of toeing the line of nuance.

21 Mar 2025#57: Raising Cooperative, Kind and Compassionate Children with Michaeleen Doucleff of "Hunt, Gather, Parent"01:29:29

What can we Westerners learn about raising intrinsically happy, self-sufficient, and helpful children from the Maya of Mexico, the Inuit of the Arctic Circle and the Hadza of Tanzania? Well, it turns out, a lot!

WEIRD cultures (Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic) have been making parenting unnecessarily more difficult than it was designed to be. From helicopter and free-range parenting, to distracting children instead of intentionally involving them in quotidian household responsibilities, we are unwittingly becoming the source of our modern-day parenting grievances.

With the help of Michaeleen Doucleff, mother and New York Times best-selling author of one of our favorite reads, “Hunt Gather Parent,” we break down modern-day parenting myths and turn to our much wiser, indigenous peers for the practical tips we’re all yearning for when we are in the trenches of motherhood.

Nicki French is a twenty-seven-year-old, stay-at-home, freebirthing mom of four little ones. In today's chat, we learn about the art of prioritizing the intimacy in your marriage in tandem with moving through the daily rhythms as a young mother juggling multiple littles. We learn about what it takes to keep the flame alive after years of marriage while in the thick of it, how to reframe our mindset amidst the chaos, and we get the scoop on all the most fascinating logistics such as hacks for loading and unloading the car solo with four small children and shopping at Costco, transitioning from mom mode to wife mode during the day, and when to intervene vs. sit back at the playground.

18 Apr 2025#59: The Case Against Circumcision with Intactivist Georganne Chapin, MPhil, JD01:12:59

We kick off our two-part Circumcision series— a topic you all have been begging us to cover for the last two years!— with none other than the Executive Director and Chairperson of Intact America, Georganne Chapin MPhil, JD.

There is nothing we shy away from in this episode. Don't worry, we don't walk on any egg shells. While debunking common circumcision myths, like how this surgery helps to prevent UTIs, STDs, and HIV, is fun and intriguing, Georganne reminds us that it's important to shift our focus away from debunking myths (don't worry, we still do!) and instead onto exercising our innate common sense about the necessity of this practice. You'll hear about the origins of this surgery, which countries do it and why, and the undeniably uncomfortable details of the procedure itself. This isn't for the faint of heart, but if you are going to put your son through this, then you should know what it entails, FULLY.

Georganne explains why circumcision is not exclusively a men's issue, and why circumcision has a lasting effect on women from the mothers of circumcised sons to the future female partners of circumcised men. Women DO have a voice in the circumcision debate, and soon-to-be moms should not sit on the sidelines while tasking their husbands to call the shots on this permanent, life-altering choice on behalf of their son.

We learn about the lasting trauma of the procedure, the function and benefit of foreskin, how the trends and stats have changed over time in regard to the choice to circumcise, and why we prefer the term "intact" over "uncircumcised."
