06 Nov 2016Episode 02 - Gremlins00:43:04
Catching up on Gremlins

Is there such a thing as ‘too many Gremlins?’ Shawn Eastridge and Alex Beard intend to find out with their first ever viewing of Gremlins.

Released in 1984, Gremlins was a major hit with audiences and critics. Along with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, it also ushered forth the PG-13 rating due to its somewhat violent nature. But while it might be a beloved Horror/Holiday film, how much of fans’ affection is due to nostalgia as opposed to the actual product?

Having missed the Gremlins boat in their childhood, Shawn and Alex finally sit down to take a gander. Will it live up to the hype or should they have seen it as kids instead? Tune in and find out!

20 Nov 2016Episode 04 - Rushmore00:35:59
Catching up on Rushmore

In 1998, Wes Anderson followed up his modest debut film Bottle Rocket with a work of absolute genius: Rushmore. With Rushmore, Anderson demonstrated the unique visual stylings, song choices and storytelling sensibilities that would become regular staples in his work and introduced the world to the wonderful Jason Schwartzman. It also marked the beginning of a long, fruitful collaboration between Anderson and Bill Murray.

While Shawn and Richie are big fans of Rushmore, Alex has never had the pleasure of seeing it. So what was it like for him to watch Rushmore for the first time? Tune in to find out.

Catching Up on National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

It's that time...the holiday season has arrived! So why not check out some Christmas movies our hosts have never seen? Released on December 1, 1989, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation was the third and final film written by the late, great John Hughes. While it received mixed reviews upon its release, its reputation has only grown through the years and it now rests comfortably in the annals of mandatory holiday viewing...for some more than others.

Join Shawn, Brandon and Lindsey as they discuss this Christmas classic and why it's remained a staple of the season for nearly three decades.

18 Dec 2016Episode 06 - Lethal Weapon00:42:48
Catching Up on Lethal Weapon

On March 6, 1987, the 'buddy cop' genre was refined to near-perfect with the Shane Black-penned, Richard Donner-helmed film Lethal Weapon. Starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover doing some of the best work of their careers, Lethal Weapon was a hit with critics and audiences and went on to spawn three, count 'em, THREE sequels. But while its action and humor is great, Lethal Weapon really works because of the relationship between its two main characters: Riggs and Murtaugh.

Join the Missing Frames crew as Alex watches this action classic for the first time, and they determine once and for all whether or not it qualifies as a Christmas movie.

01 Jan 2017Episode 07 - The Blues Brothers00:29:42
The Blues Brothers is one of the greatest comedies of all time. Few films have successfully meshed so many different genres and emerged victorious. It's a comedy, a musical and an action movie; for years it even held the record for most crashed cars in a single film. It's excessive in the best way possible and features one of Carrie Fisher's most memorable performances in a film. In honor of her memory, join Shawn and his wife Sarah as they sit down for Sarah's first ever viewing of The Blues Brothers.

In the years since it's release, however, it's become something of a cult classic and has an incredibly devoted following. In honor of David Bowie, who passed away one year ago this past Tuesday, Shawn Eastridge has decided to finally sit down and watch it for the first time, and he has recruited Labyrinth-devotee Lindsey Kendrick to guide him through this creative, fantastical world. 29 Jan 2017Episode 09 - 198400:45:10
George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel 1984 is one of Missing Frames host Shawn Eastridge’s all-time favorites. And though Michael Radford’s film adaptation (released in 1984) has a decent reputation thanks to Roger Deakins’ stunning cinematography and John Hurt’s esteemed lead performance, Shawn has avoided it out of fear that it wouldn’t live up to his expectations.

But no more.

Join Shawn and co-hosts Brandon and Lindsey Kendrick as they discuss 1984 and the risks that come with adapting a beloved novel to the big screen.

And remember…Big Brother is watching you…

NOTE: As if 1984 wasn't depressing enough, we got the news that John Hurt had passed away while we were recording this episode. We want to extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family. He was one of the all-time greats and we're glad we could honor his memory with a viewing of one of his finest performances.

05 Mar 2017Episode 11 - Before Sunrise01:08:31
In January 1995, Richard Linklater's fourth feature Before Sunrise was released in theaters. While it was by no means a box office smash, the film, which stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, has since gone on to develop something of a cult following and many have declared it, along with its two sequels Before Sunset and Before Midnight, as one of the defining cinematic romances of all time. It also happens to be one of Shawn's favorite movies.

Join Shawn and fellow Nerd Partier John Mills as they sit down for John's first-ever viewing of Before Sunrise. Along the way, they'll not only discuss the anxiety that comes with sharing a favorite movie with someone who's never seen it before, they'll also swap stories about past romances and discuss the importance of communicating and connecting with one another. Fingers crossed that the pair won't have to wait nine years before they reunite to discuss Before Sunset.

19 Mar 2017Episode 12 - The Godfather00:41:53
On March 15, 1972, Francis Ford Coppola's cinematic adaptation of Mario Puzo's best-selling novel The Godfather was released in theaters. The film was a huge hit, the highest grossing of 1972, and went on to be nominated for nine Academy Awards, ultimately winning three including Best Picture. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, if not THE greatest.

And, wouldn't you know it, Missing Frames co-host Alex Beard has never had the pleasure of watching it. Shawn Eastridge joins Alex on the 45th anniversary of the film's release to watch and discuss this absolute masterpiece.

09 Apr 2017Between Takes Episode 0.1 - Power Rangers00:15:04
Missing Frames host Shawn recently had the opportunity to see the new Power Rangers with his wife Sarah. As a child of the 90s, Shawn had something of a moral obligation to see the film; Sarah on the other hand has never seen a single episode of the series. In this Between Takes mini-episode of Missing Frames (recorded on Shawn's iPhone, so please forgive the audio quality), the two of them discuss the pros and cons of this reboot/requel/whatever, and whether or not a Power Rangers movie could ever truly be taken seriously.

07 May 2017Episode 14 - Slither00:35:48
Nearly a decade before he hit it big with Guardians of the Galaxy, writer/director James Gunn made a low-budget horror film called Slither. Gunn's 2006 debut might have only made $12 million on a $15 million budget, but through the years it's garnered something of a cult following. To celebrate the theatrical release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the Missing Frames crew decided to sit down and watch Slither for the first time ever. Tune in to find out if this little horror movie managed to slither its way into their hearts.

18 Jun 2017Episode 16 - Batman the Movie (1966)00:37:08
What's so wrong with Batman being funny?

In celebration of Adam West's life and the amazing legacy he's left behind, the Missing Frames crew watched the 1966 classic Batman the Movie. In the wake of Frank Miller, Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan, Batman has developed a reputation for being dark and brooding, and rightfully so. But an unfortunate side effect of this Dark Knight appreciation was fans throwing the Adam West/Burt Ward TV series under the bus for being too goofy. No one seems to appreciate the intentional comic genius of the series, or how far ahead of its time it was.

In this episode, our co-hosts discuss the vastly underrated brilliance of the Adam West/Burt Ward series and answer the most important question: Can a deadly serious Batman and a lighthearted, fun iteration of the character co-exist in harmony?

This episode is dedicated to our Bright Knight Adam West.

02 Jul 2017Episode 17 - Top Gun00:41:38
Happy almost 4th of July, everyone! And what's more patriotic than flying some fighter jets, playing some shirtless volleyball and taking the highway to the Danger Zone? In 1986, Top Gun gave us all these things and more and went on to become the highest grossing film of the year. It launched Tom Cruise's career to a whole new level of stardom and, despite mixed reviews, is considered something of a classic.

But is Top Gun deserving of this fame, or are people getting the quality of the film confused with the quality of its soundtrack? Shawn and Sarah sit down for their first ever Top Gun viewing and discuss whether or not it lives up to its reputatio.

11 Oct 2017Episode 24 - Blade Runner01:24:07
Ridley Scott's 1982 masterpiece Blade Runner is one of the most stunning and influential films ever made. While co-hosts Shawn and John have seen the film in one form or another, Shawn has never seen the theatrical version and John has never seen the Final Cut. In this episode, they join forces to discuss their reactions and which edition they prefer.

And not only did they watch the original film, dear listeners. They went out and saw its much-anticipated (or maybe not so much, judging from the box office numbers?) sequel Blade Runner 2049. Is it worthy of the original's legacy? And why is no one going to see it?? Hopefully the answers to these questions won't be lost like tears in rain. Tune in and enjoy.

For the first Missing Frames episode of the new year, Sarah gets first movie pick, and in honor of the snowstorms and frigid weather that has graced the U.S., she chose the popular animated Disney flick Frozen, which Shawn has never seen. Believe it or not, Frozen is the highest grossing animated film of all time, and thanks to its memorable soundtrack and characters, it appears poised to go down as a classic. But is it really that good? Shawn and Sarah discuss what they liked/disliked about the movie and whether or not the soundtrack is its true star. This could indeed be the official FINAL word on Frozen, so don't miss it!

11 Feb 2018Episode 31 - The Abyss01:14:58
Darren Moser (Ceti Alpha 3, Goodnight Moon) makes his first Missing Frames appearance to talk about his favorite film, a film Shawn has never seen. James Cameron's The Abyss. Released in summer 1989, The Abyss was considered a cinematic game changer thanks to its underwater photography and groundbreaking visual effects. It was also considered to be a nightmare to shoot by everyone involved in its production, Cameron included. (To this day, certain cast members refuse to discuss it.) Sadly, it didn't make much of an impact at the box office, barely recouping its production costs. To this day, it feels like the forgotten film in Cameron's filmography, especially considering its release was sandwiched between two of Cameron's best and biggest films, Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Shawn and Darren discuss why The Abyss deserves to be a part of the conversation and why it could be one of his best efforts.

It combined his surrealistic and horrifying imagery with scenes of idyllic surbaban life and humor, making for an unforgettable viewing experience. The critical reaction was divided at the time of its release with Roger Ebert being particularly vocal about his dislike. Now it's seen as a modern masterpiece and one of the great American films of all time.

FILM SYNOPSIS

Miles Davis: Horn player, bandleader, innovator. Elegant, intellectual, vain. Callous, conflicted, controversial. Magnificent, mercurial. Genius. The very embodiment of cool. The man with a sound so beautiful it could break your heart.

The central theme of Miles Davis's life was his restless determination to break boundaries and live life on his own terms. It made him a star—it also made him incredibly difficult to live with, for the people who loved him most. Again and again, in music and in life, Miles broke with convention—and when he thought his work came to represent a new convention, he changed it again. Miles's bold disregard for tradition, his clarity of vision, his relentless drive, and constant thirst for new experiences made him an inspiring collaborator to fellow musicians and a cultural icon to generations of listeners. It made him an innovator in music—from bebop to “cool jazz,” modern quintets, orchestral music, jazz fusion, rock ‘n’ roll, and even hip-hop.

Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, studio outtakes, and rare photos, Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool tells the story of a truly singular talent and unpacks the man behind the horn.
