24 Jan 2022Ep.162 The London Police - Ministry of Arts Podcast01:07:46

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Bob & Chaz of The London Police (@thelondonpolice)

The London Police is an art collective started in 1998 when two English geezers headed to Amsterdam to rejuvenate the visually disappointing streets of Hollands capital.

They were part of a small group of artists at the end of the last century that helped pioneer the street art movement. After a few years of mixing traveling and making art in the street TLP began to receive worldwide recognition for their contribution to the graffiti/street art movement.

They were included in many of the books documenting the scene and invited for shows and live drawing performances all over the globe.  Some 22 years on TLP have amassed more than 100 shows and events in over 35 countries and their street work continues to pop up everywhere they go. Since 2009 TLP has concentrated on more intense canvas work, on bigger solo shows and large scale mural projects.

The London Police are Chaz Barrisson who draws the iconic ‘LADS’ character and Bob Gibson whose tight portrait and architectural illustrations help marry the two styles to create an endearing, exciting fantasy world...

19 Jul 2021Ep.131 Yan Skates - Ministry of Arts Podcast00:34:09
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Yan Skates (@YanSkates)   KCAW and the King’s Road Curve present a new floral sculpture installation, in memory of Advisory Board member Sarah Farrugia.   Created by artist and florist Yan Skates, the artwork features a 2metre tall dog, made from discarded materials and living plants. This work is based on the lessons learnt by Skates whilst taking part in Netflix’s The Big Flower Fight, where they were asked to create large scale animals and creatures out of waste and plants.   The work urges us to reimagine the way we live today. Using discarded materials such as water bottles, alongside living plants, the sculpture is a reminder of the urgent issues of pollution and waste, and invites us to think of our own impact on the environment.   The dog, man’s best friend, is a symbol of companionship, but also a fun, recognisable figure that we can all recognise and relate to. It invites us to get close and investigate the work, its unusual materials sparking conversation.       * Kensington + Chelsea Art Festival is expanding throughout the summer season with a festival that elevates the magic and shared experiences of public art and live performance. Until 31 August, K+C Festival will bring people together to celebrate, inspire, and be inspired - For more information go to https://www.kcaw.co.uk     For more information on the work of Yan Skates go to https://www.yanskates.com/   To Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofarts   For full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.org Email: ministryofartsorg@gmail.com Social Media: @ministryofartsorg

25 Mar 2022 Laxmi Hussain - MoA Bonus Episode 0600:38:20

In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Laxmi Hussain (@thislakshmi)

Elegant and ethereal but also precise and geometric, Laxmi Hussain’s drawings and paintings exist somewhere between the abstract and the realistic, often presenting what appear to be the free-flowing organic forms of the body through intricately ordered patterns. Her finely detailed line forms are rooted in a fascination with architecture, a subject she studied for several years before becoming disillusioned with the constraints and rigidity of the discipline and shifting her focus to the unconstrained creative possibilities offered by art.

Her inspiration comes from the forms encountered in everyday life, from the body, the tenderness of motherhood, the natural shapes of the body as a vessel and its evolution throughout life. Working in several different media, usually at night, Laxmi is driven by experimentation, constantly exploring new techniques and searching for the shapes and subjects they express best. Often, her work includes elements that appear incomplete, obliging the viewer to pause and engage with the artwork, filling in the absences themselves rather than just dismissing it and moving on.

04 Mar 2019Ep.27 Ray Richardson - Mizog Art Podcast01:37:23

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Ray Richardson.

Ray Richardson is a figurative painter from Woolwich, South East London, an environment that features heavily in his work. Another main feature of his work is an English Bull Terrier breed of dog, which symbolises the artist himself.

Ray's painting style has a very cinematic feel, often having figures entering or leaving the frame, only half visible. This style led one critic to describe him as the Martin Scorsase of figurative painting.

04 Mar 2021Ep.104 Skip Gallery - Ministry of Arts Podcast00:53:57

This week Gary Mansfield speaks to Skip Gallery (@skipgallery)

SKIP Gallery is an ongoing collaborative artwork, created by artistic duo Baker & Borowski. Their idea is to offer opportunities for artistic interventions in unexpected places, utilising a specially modified skip.

Skips are part of our everyday lives, providing the means with which we voraciously dismantle and renew our urban environment. They are so prevalent that we barely notice them. They represent that which we want to jettison, to forget, and so there is a profound irony in the creation of artistic works, housed in a skip.

Creatives are asked to produce site-specific pieces. The space acts as a disruptive environment to inspire discourse. It is a new type of mobile art space, presenting an alternative to the conventional routes to art, for both artists and viewers.

The intention is for SKIP Gallery to develop and grow as a democratic platform for all the arts, and the modular nature of the skip means that projects are not confined by the usual limitations of a conventional creative platform.

11 Sep 2020Ep.83 Lyle Owerko 9/11 Special01:08:08
This week Gary Mansfield speaks to Lyle Owerko (@lyleowerko)   Lyle Owerko is a Canadian Photographer that has lived in several countries, he currently resides in LA.   On September 11th 2001, Lyle became responsible for capturing one of the most dramatic photographs since the invention of the camera.   Having not yet unpacked from a recent flight, Lyle grabbed his camera bag as the explosion of the first plane hitting Tower #1 was heard. With panic and debris filling the Manhattan air, Lyle, like everyone else, thought it was a devastating accident, until the second plane was seen banking around in the direction of Tower #2.   Time Magazine showed Lyle’s photograph of a fire-ball exiting all four sides of Tower #2 on its cover. As an image, it is aesthetically beautiful. However, the actions that created it, makes it one of the most powerful, harrowing, disturbing and thought provoking photographs we are ever likely to see.   For more information on Lyle Owerko and his work go to www.lyleowerko.com   For full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www. ministryofarts.org Email: ministryofartsorg@gmail.com Social Media: @ministryofartsorg

Primarily through the Craft website Etsy, but since the Summer of 2019, they have been a huge success in Martgate’s Turner Contemporary.   Margo’s vintage style portraits are based on no-one, but appear to be everyone & anyone and her use of colour emits a joyful sense of optimism.   For more information on Margo McDaid and his work go to www.etsy.com/uk/shop/margomcdaidart   *Cover Photo courtesy of Hester van Overbeek @ hestershandmadehome   For full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.org Email: ministryofartsorg@gmail.com

24 May 2021Ep.118 Orlanda Broom - Ministry of Arts Podcast00:43:09
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Orlanda Broom (@OrlandaBroom)

Orlanda's main practice is painting which takes two distinct forms: lush, exotic landscapes and abstract pieces. Connecting these bodies of work is a strong sense of colour, references to organic forms and the exploration of the mediums she works with.

The abstract paintings are created through a process that involves no intervention with tools or brushes, just the flow and manipulation of the medium on the canvas. There is an immediacy and freshness borne out of this way of working which is complementary to the layered aspect of her landscape paintings.

Her landscapes represent re-imagined places which are celebratory, and in some senses, a rose-tinted view of the natural world. The surface joyousness is tempered by an uneasy sense of abandonment. she depicts wild places that are uninhabited and timeless, offering a glimpse of paradise that would ultimately ensnare and/or is potentially lost to us..

28 Mar 2022Ep.169 Elizabeth Prentis - Ministry of Arts Podcast01:16:42

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Elizabeth Prentis (@elizabethprentis)

Elizabeth is currently exploring painting and is developing a body of 2D work with performative ties. Bold and direct, Prentis' paintings are often confronting- challenging the audience on their own boundaries and expectations. Prentis' practice is not tied to one medium in particular; paintings act as blueprints for sculptures, performances, video-art, props and art installations. The process is open ended and experimental.

Prentis explores sexual pleasure and encourages discussion surrounding sex. Her practice digests ideas of dominance, power play, gender expectation and patriarchy in heterosexual encounters. Drawing on her own experiences, Prentis encourages a wider discourse surrounding sex, sexual exploration, respect and the importance of female pleasure.

07 May 2020Ep.69 The Loveless Artist– Ministry of Arts Podcast01:02:45

This week Gary Mansfield speaks Nick Hogben aka The Loveless Artist (@loveless_artist)

Nick has been creating art under the name Loveless Artist for around 3 years.

Having battled with his mental health nearly all his life and using art as a release, his practice is now one that is intertwined and reactive to the moment.

His linear, monochrome figures seem to battle for dominance on the canvas, sometimes red, sometimes black, sometimes a combination of both.  This allows us, the viewer, to witness his inner conflicts, which appear to have no winner… Yet.

Nick also hosts and produces the hugely popular Mouth of Manliness Podcast, where he discusses the mental health journey of himself and each invited guest (@mouthofmanliness)

15 Feb 2021Ep.102 David Henty - Ministry of Arts Podcast01:01:44
This week Gary Mansfield speaks to David Henty (@davidhenty_art)     “He has painted more Lowery’s that Lowery”   David’s history as an artist started, appropriately enough, with a short stint in HM Prison for forgery in the mid-1990s. It was while serving the sentence that David was inspired to start painting after being seduced by the stories of the artists he’d study. Fascinated by their technical genius, he became more and more interested in attaining a level of expertise and being ‘connected’ to the very psyche of the artists. Before long he taught himself, through rigorous preparation and a wholly immersive research process, the art of copying and flawless reproduction. Wherever possible, even sourcing the same materials, pigments, brushes, canvases and boards staying true to the period.   Today, David Henty is considered the best copyist artist in the world. His work is meticulously and lovingly recreated to the finest detail, having honed his craft over 25 years to now master the techniques and nuances of some of history’s most iconic artists, his work has fooled scientists and art critics alike, being practically indiscernible from originals of such artworks by Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, LS Lowry, Caravaggio, Leonardo Da Vinci, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Jean Michel Basquiat, Rene Magritte, John Singer Sargent and the list goes on.   For more information on David and his work go to www.davidhentyart.co.uk     For full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.org Email: ministryofartsorg@gmail.com Social Media: @ministryofartsorg

18 Mar 2022James Vaulkhard - MoA Bonus Episode 0500:27:01

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to James Vaulkhard (@jamesvaulkhard)

James Vaulkhard holds a BA degree in History of Art from Leeds University, and has both trained and taught at Charles Cecil Studios and Studio Della Statua in Florence, Italy. Here, he gained a formidable reputation for his ability to embrace and manifest traditional techniques in both portraiture and sculpture. Notably, upon his graduation in 2013, Vaulkhard was commissioned to participate in a bridge project between Italy and Kenya, developing the preliminary studies for The Sacred Heart Cathedral Kericho in collaboration with local Kenyan sculptors.

In his most recent work, Vaulkhard has combined techniques developed in both these series of works and married them to the aesthetic arena of Japanese art, specifically addressing the mysterious concept of Ma or negative space. The result is a series of abstract landscapes intended to draw the viewer deeper into nature via an overwhelming visual cacophony that seeks to communicate the vast potentialities that exist between the elements.

‘World Waxed Green’ opens at Asia House on 23-28 March and is curated by MC Llamas

12 Jul 2021Ep.129 LR Vandy- Ministry of Arts Podcast00:58:24

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to LR Vandy (@lrvandy)

In her sculptures, LR Vandy brings together both found and made objects in order to create new meaning from seemingly unrelated mediums forced together.

A large Jesmonite sculpture from the series Superhero Cog-Woman, this work, on view in Napoleon Garden for Summer 2021 as part of the *Kensington & Chelsea Art Festival, is a tribute to women throughout time, alluding to how women have often acted as the unmentioned drivers of industry, toiling long and hard but underrated, often overlooked and largely unrecognised.

Cogs are mechanical components used to connect one thing to another, literally enabling things to be driven forward. As such, they act as a perfect metaphor for the role of women in industry and indeed in society in general.

* Kensington + Chelsea Art Festival is expanding throughout the summer season with a festival that elevates the magic and shared experiences of public art and live performance.

Until 31 August, K+C Festival will bring people together to celebrate, inspire, and be inspired - For more information go to https://www.kcaw.co.uk

29 Nov 2021Ep.154 Liberty Choir - Ministry of Arts Podcast01:06:06

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to MJ Paranzino & Ginny Dougary of Liberty Choir (@libertychoiruk)

The overall aim of Liberty Choirs is to provide for excluded and isolated people (for example, those in secure psychiatric settings or people who are serving custodial sentences) a ‘through the gate’ programme of high-quality singing and social development.

It is designed to help develop skills and self-confidence, open up the world of arts through singing and provide access to new social networks as the participants re-enter the wider community.

The Liberty Choir vision is that the reoffending rates among ex-offenders can be significantly reduced through a network of choirs located within prison and the community. We believe that the economic and social case for the choirs is overwhelming.

Ep.70 Unskilled Worker – Ministry of Arts Podcast

This week Gary Mansfield speaks Helen Downie aka Unskilled Worker (@unskilledworker)

Helen is a self-taught artist and has been painting for just seven years, in that short time, she has amassed over 280,000 Instagram followers, under the Moniker Unskilled Worker and has become one of the country’s most sought after painters.

Helen wanted her Unskilled Worker to be anonymous, sexless, ageless and colourless.  She wanted it to be anyone.  As her popularity grew, as did the viewer’s curiosity as to whom this person was, that created such stand-alone artwork.  To Helen’s amusement, the most popular belief was that it was a 24 year old male behind this name.

03 Jan 2022Ep.160 Keith Brymer Jones - Ministry of Arts Podcast00:51:02

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Keith Brymer Jones (@keith brymerjones)

Keith Brymer Jones is a British potter and ceramic designer, known for his homeware Word Range with retro lettering and punk motifs. In 2015, he debuted as an expert judge alongside Kate Malone on BBC2’s The Great Pottery Throw Down where his readiness to shed tears at the contestants' work attracted comment. He has continued his role and remained as judge when the programme transferred to More4 in 2020.

At the age of 11, the London-born Brymer Jones made his first pottery object – an owl. It was then that he knew he wanted to be a potter and, after a brief stint as the lead singer of British punk band The Wigs, he became an apprentice for Harefield Pottery in London. This is where he learnt to make modern ceramics.

After his apprenticeship, Brymer Jones started out hand-making ceramics for retailers including Conran Group, Habitat, Barneys New York, Monsoon, Laura Ashley and Heal's. He began to develop the Word Range for the first time; he was originally attracted to words because of their shapes, as he is dyslexic. Brymer Jones describes working with clay, shape and form as a natural affinity, as a result of his condition.

Brymer Jones also works as Head of Design for MAKE International. In this role he collaborates with other designers including Jane Foster, Scion Living, Hokolo and Becky Baur.

02 May 2020Ep.68 The V-Art.Show – Ministry of Arts Podcast00:21:22

This week Gary Mansfield speaks to two founding members of the V-Art.Show (@v_art.show)

The V-Art.Show was created by eight artists in response to the closure of the art fairs, which is where they met and gain a majority of their income.

Whilst keeping in touch on the video conference app ZOOM, they developed the idea of inviting people in to meet them and view their work.  Similar to an art fair, the visitor can travel between all eleven rooms, chat to the artist face to face and view their work, just like a conventional art fair.

You can find out more on the next V-Art.Show on their website https://www.v-art.show

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Lee Baker of Graphic Rewilding (@graphic_rewilding)

Lee baker [like Catherine Borowski, ep.104] is one half Baker & Borowski, that has given us, among other things, The skip Gallery and now Graphic rewilding.

Lee has been a commercial music producer for many years, using its income to fund Baker & Borowski projects to bypass the bureaucratic process of funding applications.

Their latest, Graphic Rewilding, delivers exactly what the title states… Large-scale graphic floral worlds placed in a contradictive environment, be it a factory window, wall of a building, or in this case a 30 metre hoarding in Earle’s Court as Part of the *Kensington & Chelsea Art Week

* Kensington + Chelsea Art Week is expanding throughout the summer season with a festival that elevates the magic and shared experiences of public art and live performance.

04 Nov 2019Ep.52 Adam Riches - Mizog Art Podcast00:39:06

In this episode Gary Mansfield talks to Adam Riches (@adamrichesart)

Adam Riches is an artist that has amassed fans worldwide with the manner in which he produces portraits.  Whilst ‘scribbling’, with pen onto paper, an imaginary form  slowly develops among the loose lines.  This method creates ghostly figures, almost floating from the paper.

Adam also produces equally ghostly portraits on canvas using oil paint, rather than floating from a white surface, like his drawings, his painted figures appear to be slowly sinking into their deep and dark backgrounds.

18 Mar 2021Ep.107 Kate Murdoch - Ministry of Arts Podcast00:53:18

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Kate Murdoch (@Katemurdochartist)

Kate Murdoch lives and works in London. Her work centres around a lifelong passion for collecting. She was awarded the Shape Open prize in 2016, and her award winning work, selected by Yinka Shonibare, is in the Shape Arts permanent collection.

Kate Murdoch's work is inspired by her personal experience. Her artistic practice revolves around assemblage and installation with found objects, mostly from the everyday and dating from the last century.

Murdoch is interested in objects as clear indicators of the passage of time. Wider themes of loss and remembrance run through her work, reflecting a fascination with the permanence of objects versus the fragility of human existence. The theme of value and worth is central to Murdoch's work and the objects presented open up opportunities for personal and political discussion around class, gender and privilege.

03 May 2022Ep.172 kennardphillipps - Ministry of Arts Podcast01:07:42

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to kennardphillipps (@kennardphillipps)

kennardphillipps is a collaboration between Peter Kennard and Cat Phillipps working since 2002 to produce art in response to the invasion of Iraq. It has evolved to confront power and war across the globe.

The work is made for the street, the gallery, the web, newspapers & magazines, and to lead workshops that develop peoples’ skills and help them express their thoughts on what’s happening in the world through visual means. The work is made as a critical tool that connects to international movements for social and political change.

kennardphillipps don’t see the work as separate to social and political movements that are confronting established political and economic systems, they see it as part of those movements, the visual arm of protest.

They want it to be used by people as a part of their own activism, not just as pictures on the wall to contemplate.

To facilitate this, as well as selling their limited edition prints on the site enabling them to fund the making of the work, there is a free download page of images with a voluntary contribution to the International Solidarity Movement.

08 May 2022Ep.173 Pure Evil - Ministry of Arts Podcast01:12:47

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Pure Evil (@pureevilgallery)

Pure Evil was born Charles Uzzell Edwards in South Wales in 1968. He grew up in a world of art thanks to his father, Welsh painter John Uzzell Edwards . The father’s artwork undoubtedly impacted his son, demonstrated in a range of influences from Cubism to Minimalism, from Picasso to Chagall.

The physical and cultural landscape of the 1990’s U.S. intrigued and beckoned the young Pure Evil, and upon completing his studies in graphics and fashion in London he picked up his skateboard and set off for California’s West Coast. He established himself in San Francisco, working for the Anarchic Adjustment clothing label as a clothing designer / pattern cutter / graphic designer. He produced countless t-shirt graphics for screen printing, dropped in on the West Coast rave scene, and travelled to Japan where West Coast Streetwear was a hot item. Pure Evil also became involved in the musical fabric of San Francisco and DJ'ed and was an electronic recording artist for Pete Namlook’s ambient electronic music label, FAX (based in Frankfurt, Germany).

15 May 2022KAI LAB - MoA Bonus Episode 0800:29:28

In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to KAI LAB (@kai.lab_)

We are a London-based arts and design practice that creates electronic, mechanical and sonic artworks. All with backgrounds in the physical sciences, we place a heavy emphasis on research and development.

Our projects are driven by the desire to understand the core components of intriguing, complex and beautiful natural phenomena. Each artwork aims to make tangible the intangible, and invites the audience to use all their senses to experience a new perception of the environment.

The observation of nature shows that the beauty of physical events is often the result of the strict rules of physics combined with the randomness of our chaotic environment. Our work aims to find the delicate balance between what technology can control and what randomness can disrupt, to build objects and spaces that are relatable yet surprising.

Our research into micro and macro natural phenomena and our desire to work with these in new ways often leads to the development of novel electrical and mechanical technologies. We use these systems to power our own pieces as well as those of collaborators across a number of fields and industries.

18 May 2022Akshita Gandhi - MoA Bonus Episode 0900:24:34

In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Akshita Gandhi (@iamakshitagandhi)

A Love Letter to My Home

A solo exhibition of new work by Akshita Gandhi

Is India truly free seventy-five years after its independence? The Indian Independence Act, which established India's independence from British imperialism, went into effect in August 1947. However, the act partitioned India, causing significant social divisions. What is India's post-colonial identity now, amidst social and political upheaval and increasing censorship? And how does the surrounding architecture reflect the residents' vitality and spirit?

Photographer and multimedia artist Akshita Gandhi strives to answer these questions in her solo exhibition "A Love Letter To My Home." Presented at The Nehru Centre by Gabriel Fine Arts to celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, Gandhi’s work casts new light on Mumbai and Udaipur, revealing cityscapes in flux and essentially coming undone.

22 May 2022Ep.174 Dion Kitson - Ministry of Arts Podcast01:02:38

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Dion Kitson (@dionkitsonstudio)

Dion Kitson is an emerging artist born in Dudley and his portfolio spans sculpture, film, collage, text-art, and sound. Dion is using the space as a gallery to show artists from the West Midlands and to show his own work and archive. Having graduated in 2020 with BA Fine Art from Birmingham School of Art, he has since been awarded numerous prizes, including the Tate prize and the ACS studio prize. Judges Gavin Turk and Celia Paul said:

‘Dion’s work is dealing with the reality of being an artist in his environment. He takes the outside world and puts it into work, asking the question “what does it mean to him to be an artist?” I think he has a fascinating approach to his environment.’ – Gavin Turk

‘His work reminded me of poetry, there is a dark humour in it which reminds me of Philip Larkin. Dion’s practice is very appropriate to this particular time and the focus that it gives on how to turn things into playfulness. I’m moved by them.’ – Celia Paul

02 Jun 2022Ep.175 Keira Rathbone - Ministry of Arts Podcast00:46:01

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Keira Rathbone (@typewriterart)

Keira Rathbone is an established fine artist living and working in London. She grew up in Dorset, gained a BA (hons) in Fine Art at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Since 2003 she has developed a unique drawing technique, employing a manual typewriter as a drawing tool.

Rathbone draws images from life using her typewriter, instinctively translating what she sees into an array of letters, number and symbols chosen for their shape and textural values resulting in beautiful enigmatic images that encourage the viewer to keep looking from different distances, reading more into it each time. She develops and exhibits images based around compelling themes and often incorporates live audio/visual performances by typing before an audience with video projection, sound effects and collaborations with other artists.

Her art is used to reflect the world and people around her, capturing moments through this artistic and accessible medium. Typewriter Art does not overcomplicate but allows a moment to be depicted and celebrated in a true snapshot of beauty and poignancy.

She has appeared numerous times on television, including BBC News, BBC World News, The One Show and SKY Landscape Artist of the Year as well as BBC Radio 2, 4 and 6Music. She currently has an original hanging with short film and typewriter exhibited alongside in the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. Her work takes has taken across the UK and abroad, each place influences and inspires her creative process.

09 Jun 2022Ep.176 Duncan McAfee - Ministry of Arts Podcast 00:58:33

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Duncan McAfee (@duncanmcafee)

McAfee essentially approaches painting as a game. He arranges figurative and abstract elements from art and visual culture to make hybrid paintings, brightly coloured, comic-book exquisite-corpses.

His recent Exploding Heads series could be portraits of the mad prophets of some post apocalyptic cult. Constructed from broken fragments of other images, misremembered or misquoted, like Russell Hoban’s Punch puppet in the novel Ridley Walker. McAfee draws on Hoban, “the way Punch is misappropriated and all wrong is funny and grotesque but the weight and meaning it takes on is also deeply affecting. I want to try and get close to that conflict of feelings in my paintings”. This collage style evokes a surrealist “chance encounter” but also perhaps like Burroughs’ cut-ups, a form of time travel.

McAfee’s influences range from Nigel Cooke’s recurring characters, George Condo’s Psychological Cubism, revisiting Francis Bacon, the fanaticism of classical religious painting, and also outsider Ralph Bakshi’s animation and recent paintings of clowns and mobsters. McAfee’s painting technique plays back and forth between very loose chance actions and tight, illustrative drawing/painting. This creates a tension that makes us unsure if the image is in the process of forming or breaking apart. It’s in a state of transition and meaning is uncertain, much like the world around us.

15 Jun 2022Ep.177 KCAW & Kipling Hunt - Ministry of Arts Podcast 00:50:55

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Kipling Hunt (@kipling_hunt)

Born in London, Hunt has also lived in Barcelona, Birmingham and in semi-rural isolation on the borders of Wales. Kipling makes fine art pieces in ceramic, in paint, in print, in film, or in fact any medium most able to deliver each concept in question with assurance and panache.

Kipling has also worked for over a decade in the Secondary Art Market, as a General Specialist in Fine Art Paintings, Prints and Sculpture. This gave Hunt great insight and a comprehensive knowledge of artists both practicing and those now deceased; and a working blueprint of what goes on behind the scenes to oil the wheels of the global art market.

Lise Bouissière is a Franco-British artist. She graduated from Central Saint Martins School (London) and Villa Arson (Nice, France). Bouissière is a Royal Society of Sculptors member. Over the past ten years, she has shown in solo and group shows across the United Kingdom and Italy, including at The Royal Society of Sculptors (2021), Aora Space (2021), Koppel Exchange Project (2020 and 2021), The Crypt Gallery (2021), Gerald Moore Gallery (2020), The Smallest Gallery in Soho (2019), Villa Arson (2014), Palais de Tokyo (2016). Bouissière also took part in Venice land Biennale (2019) and Monaco’s music festival (2011). Bouissiere’s practice focuses on the optimisation of space and the use of materials. Through a distinct construction of ideas, found materials are played with to create minimalist and honest compositions. Bouissière’s structures reveal a memory, a current state or a hidden side of a place with the elements that surround it. In many cases, the place Bouissière constructs her art is transformed like a mental space, offering the viewer a large panel of interpretations. Lise Bouissière lives and works in London.

26 Jun 2022Ep.179 Paul Yule - Ministry of Arts Podcast 00:41:14

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Paul Yule (@paul_yule)

Paul Yule is a South African born sculptor, photographer and film-maker, living in the UK.

Having had an extensive career in photography and film-making, Paul turned to sculpture as a form of connecting with his Son, who studied sculpture at Central Saint Martins and had recently passed away. He slowly manipulated a small ball of clay, that he had been handed, he subconsciously formed one bust of an imaginary figure after another.

Each small figure has a definite personality, a personality made more powerful once photographed and blown up to around a metre.

You can find Paul and his work on stall 47, at The Talented Art Fair, Brighton Racecourse 1-3 July.

Talented Art 1-3 July 2022

Brighton Racecourse, Freshfield Road, Brighton BN2 9XZ

Talented Art Fair was founded by Oliver Norris and Leah Michelle, the team behind the New Artist Fair, with the aim of offering the public a friendly and affordable place to purchase art directly from established and emerging artists. In doing so, the fair provides a physical platform for successful artists to interact personally with their collectors and also allows them to grow their client list.

Having successfully curated and run exhibitions and art fairs for the past six years, the organisers recognised a gap in the art fair market for artists who have a successful track record for selling their work, and who may also have gallery representation, but want to introduce their art directly to the general buying public in London.

Talented aims to bridge this gap by becoming a great place to discover amazing talent and buy art directly from artists, in a relaxed and inspiring environment.

03 Jul 2022Ep.180 Gavin Turk - Ministry of Arts Podcast 01:01:30

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Gavin Turk (@thisisnotgavinturk)

Gavin Turk (b 1967) is a British born, international artist. He has pioneered many forms of contemporary British sculpture now taken for granted, including the painted bronze, the waxwork, the recycled art-historical icon and the use of rubbish in art.

Turk’s installations and sculptures deal with issues of authorship, authenticity and identity. Concerned with the ‘myth’ of the artist and the ‘authorship’ of a work, Turk’s engagement with this modernist, avant-garde debate stretches back to the ready-mades of Marcel Duchamp.

In 1991, the Royal College of Art refused Turk a degree on the basis that his final show, ‘Cave’, consisted of a whitewashed studio space containing only a blue heritage plaque commemorating his presence ‘Gavin Turk worked here 1989-91'. Instantly gaining notoriety through this installation, Turk was spotted by Charles Saatchi and was included in several YBA exhibitions. Turk’s work has since been collected and exhibited by many major museums and galleries throughout the world.

29 Jun 2022Melody Travers - MoA Bonus Episode 1100:26:20

In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Melody Travers (@melodytraversart)

Melody is a French artist with a Masters in Art & Art History at the Université Paris VIII. She lived in London twelve years, developing her art whilst working in book publishing and art galleries. She spent two years working full time on her art at Wimbledon Art Studios; she has since moved her practice back to France and now splits her time between France and London.

She has showcased her work in London and the UK and was shortlisted for the Creates Gallery Emerging Artist Award in 2018, shortlisted for the ArtCan open call 2020 and long-listed for the Secret Art Prize in 2019.

10 Jul 2022Ep.181 Charlotte Colbert - Ministry of Arts Podcast00:31:32

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Charlotte Colbert (@colbertcharlotte)

Language, psychoanalysis, socio-political constructions of gender and identity are at the heart of Colbert’s practice. Spanning film, photography, ceramics, and sculpture, she questions narrative structures and storytelling, weaving surreal and fantastical mise en scene in a documentarian approach to characters, figures, and people. Fiction becomes a way to approach the truth and the most intimate emotions. Straddling the fine line between fine art and film, Colbert’s films have strong philosophical undertones and often play on questions of time, space and identity, often dark and surreal with a hint of comedy.

Selected Shows: Mademoiselle, CRAC Centre Regional d Art Contemporain Occitanie, Sete, France (2018); From Selfie to Self Expression, Saatchi Gallery, London, UK (2017), Daydreaming with Stanely Kubrick; Guests V&A Museum of Childhood, London, UK; Istanbul International Art fair; Art Basel; Small is Beautiful, Flowers Gallery; Dancing at the edge of the World, Sara Zanin, Rome; Birth, TJ Boulting.

10 Aug 2022Konstantin Benkovich – MoA Bonus Episode 1300:28:05

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Konstantin Benkovich (@benkovich)

Artworks of Benkovich are in the permanent museum collections and in many private collections around the globe. Together with Pussy Riot and a number of other well-known Russian artists, he participated in the group exhibition “Russian Post-Soviet Actionism” at the Saatchi Art Gallery in London in 2017, various public projects worldwide, exhibitions in the Multimedia Art Museum in Moscow (2021) and the exhibition “Millennials in Contemporary Russian Art” running today in the Russian State Museum in Saint-Petersburg.

His works deal with freedom and unfreedom through the symbols and materiality of his sculptures.

The reconsidered, reinvented symbols turn into new – critical, political, desacralized ones.

The most dominant material in his works are steel bars which he cuts and welds into grids. The rebar and steel in Russia is the synonym of unfreedom. The rebar is an absolute symbol of aggression.

David Böhm & Jiří Franta

The leading Czech artists David Böhm and Jiří Franta, an artistic duo since 2006, explore in their work the relation between drawing, performance and conceptual art. 17 Aug 2022Ep.186 Adam Brigland - Ministry of Arts Podcast00:57:27

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Adam Brigland (@adam_bridgland)

Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2006, Bridgland has used a diverse range of materials and working methods to pursue an incisive and often witty exploration of distinctively British sentiments, externalising the underlying sense of loss and nostalgia that permeates our memories. Vignettes of British back-packer’s holidays, old-fashioned bus-tours, and childhood seaside breaks that figure strongly in his visual repertoire are often tinged with this feeling of time having passed too quickly, our memories gradually fading. Twinned with this however, is an upbeat celebration of themes distilled from children’s colouring books, paint-by-numbers kits, old public transport posters and kitsch postcards, which he imbues with the kaleidoscopic richness of carefully chosen and thickly applied primary colours. These everyday, almost mundane subjects are treated with the importance and status of emblems; centred in each work and often encapsulated within related text or target-like circular borders that focus our gaze.

Whether descriptive of change or constancy, Bridgland’s work keys into our desire to remember and relive, and plays upon our tendency to elevate our shared memories with the rose-tinted, wistful spectacles we don when thinking of the past, as well as the future. His depictions of identity and belonging, nostalgia and emotion give to his work a hugely personal aspect, and are influenced by a graphic and visual tradition that is quite specific to Britain. Yet his subtle combinations of image and related text play on everyone’s perceptions of shared occasions. Perhaps then it is the delicately précised power of the experiences he attempts to capture that make Bridgland’s work so accessible to all.

Text by Matthew Reeves, Independent Curator and Curator of East Wing Nine at the Courtauld Institute of the Arts.

30 Aug 2022Miss Bugs - MoA Bonus Episode 1500:24:09

In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Miss Bugs (@miss_bugs)

Miss Bugs was founded in the early part of 2007, originally coming from a background in photography and graphics. Working in partnership, they developed fast, spontaneous working methods, cutting and pasting existing images; ‘remixing and sampling classics’ in art to make new pieces with their own mark.

Miss Bugs began in the early days making small scale works on paper, using screen printing with hand painted elements. They then scaled the work up, making life size cut outs of characters to place in situ on the streets of London. These were left in place to become part of the cityscape and recorded through photography.

Their most recent work includes larger scale pieces, incorporating laser cut planes of wood, hundreds of small component objects and poured resin. These pieces are time consuming and labour intensive, and a long way from the quickly constructed art pieces of the early days. Miss Bugs has always taken a broad and varied approach to creating work. The combining of materials and objects, alongside the way contemporary imagery can be collaged together, either by hand, through photography, or using a digital process is important.

The focus of the work has always been the human form; as Miss Bugs’ interest lies in developing ‘characters’
to tell a story. Archetypal imagery from magazines, art history and films are used as a starting point, which are then cut, overlaid and distorted to produce character portraits with an arresting graphic look. The influence of collage artists like Hannah Höch can clearly be seen in the work. The layering and placing of colour and pattern is also intrinsic to the work, and is very much a hands on element for Miss Bugs in the construction of the final pieces.

05 Sep 2022Ep.188 The Misfortune Teller - Ministry of Arts Podcast 01:09:12

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to The Misfortune teller (@themisfortuneteller)

After failing at everything else in life, The Misfortune Teller gave up entirely and decided to become an artist.

Since then, his bleakly humorous, confessional style has garnered him a modest yet enthusiastic following, and nigh-on zero industry recognition. Encouragingly, some people have paid actual money to acquire his stuff, which is a surprise both to him and his friends and family, who cheer from the sidelines with a bemused, and slightly annoyed look on their faces.

As creator of the ‘Dark Therapy’ style, The Misfortune Teller delivers painfully honest truths across a variety of mediums, from ink on paper to balloon sculptures on rooftops, from brutally honest memorial plaques screwed onto park benches in the dead of night, to teabags inscribed with demotivational messages. On occasion, he also gives live ‘Misfortunetellings’ at fairs to anyone brave enough to hear their dark prophecy.

His most recent piece, a metal road sign bearing the message ‘Everything is a sign when you are lost,’ is available now.*

11 Sep 2022Ep.189 Sara Pope - Ministry of Arts Podcast 00:34:11

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Sara Pope (@sarapopeartist)

Contemporary artist Sara Pope is best known for her bold, seductive paintings of voluptuous lips. Taking inspiration from a successful career in the fashion industry as a shoe designer for brands such as Paul Smith, and also her work in magazines as a designer and art director, Sara aims to capture the sensuality and seductive power conveyed by the lips and mouth. Interested in questions of beauty, communication, and the notion of perfection, Sara uses the perspective of her commercial experience to explore these themes.

The starting point is a makeup brush and a lipstick. She paints the models’ lips, then, using tricks and techniques of makeup and lighting, she begins the process of creating the perfect lips. She asks the model, to express different emotions which she captures photographically. Using these shots as inspiration she begins the artwork. The painting process involves several layers of thin oil-diluted paint being overlaid, blending and smoothing the colours extensively at every stage, sometimes also mixing lipstick into the paint. Emulating the stylistic slickness of advertising, the result is glossy, perfect and irresistible.

21 Sep 2022John Ball - MoA Bonus Episode 1700:34:51

In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to John Ball (@beware_the_void)

Based in Romford (London, U.K) and working primarily in the South East of the United Kingdom, contemporary artist John Ball creates unsettling images of a dystopian suburban landscape.

John is probably best known for his appearance on the Sky Arts ‘Landscape Artist Of The Year’ television show where he was fortunate enough to place as finalist.

‘Incredibly cinematic, foreboding vacant landscapes’ comparable to the work of Edward hopper and David lynch. (Kate Bryan, Head of Collections for Soho House)

'John Ball's work was a like a breath of fresh air on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year in 2017 with its unique sense of mood and use of colour. The melancholic scenes that he constructs are poetic in themselves and full of story, to the point that they demand your attention and hold it very firmly indeed.' (Kathleen Soriano, curator)

Commissioned by Teeth of the Sea (Rocket Recordings) to produce their debut album cover in 2009 and subsequently 'your mercury' (2010) and 'Master' (2013).

27 Sep 2022Ep.191 Kate Knight - Ministry of Arts Podcast00:51:32

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Kate Knight (@knightpainter)

Kent based artist Kate Knight works primarily with figurative imagery.

Within the drawn explorations of nature, Knight's concerns are upon the aesthetics of desire, sex and death. The works are provocative, playful, harsh and tongue in cheek. The compositions establish a series of graphic signs, aiming to evoke a narrative whether epic or fleeting.

The current developments juxtapose a darker underbelly, presenting unease; as well as the guardianship of something sacred. This response is loaded with a sense of otherness, something beyond the ordinary; a dystopian landscape. Knight currently works in biro as well as painting and sculpture. The use of biro on such a large scale is labour intensive; enabling very fine detail and presenting an etched like quality. Knight approaches drawing in much the same way as she paints, for this reason she considers herself to be primarily a painter.

Knight studied her BA Fine Art Painting at Chelsea College of Art and design 2005. She was selected as the runner up for the Marmite Prize for Painting 2010 as well as being selected for ‘Artist of the Day’ Flowers Central on Cork Street 2010 by professor Mo Throp. She is a regular participant at London's prestigious Art Car Boot Fair
