Being a successful photographer requires more than a nice camera and editing software. In this episode, I share with you my background and how I transformed my wedding and newborn photography business into a multi-6-figure equine photography business.
Does a 5 figure portrait client sound like an absolute dream to you? What if I told you that that dream was closer to reality than you may think? Join me as I chat with a former coaching client of mine, Jamie Pankow, about the foundational pillars of your business and how to build your business for success!
In this episode, we break down the fundamental pillars of building a highly profitable photography business.
Pricing: Is your pricing set up in a way that can get you to those giant 5 figure clients?
Client Experience: Is your client experience simple for both you and your clients?
Sales Process: Does your sales process make it easy for your clients to make decisions about what they want to purchase and feel good about it?
Marketing: Do you feel lost in your marketing strategy, and you are wondering why potential clients aren’t knocking down your door?
Mindset: Do you believe that 5 figure clients are a real possibility for you and your business?
Mindset is the number one thing that I see impacting my coaching client’s ability to go out and do the big scary things they need to do in order to build a profitable photography business.
Do you ever feel those weird feelings, like something is physically holding you back and stopping you from doing what you need to do?
Maybe the thought of people paying you thousands of dollars freaks you out so you never go out and charge what you should be charging. Or potentially you are worried that you might disappoint someone if everything isn’t perfect, so you work and re-work things over and over and never put them out into the world.
In all reality, your life experiences mold your mindset without you even realizing it, creating limiting beliefs that you may not even be aware of. Identifying and analyzing these limiting beliefs, determining the lies versus the truth, will open doors you didn’t even realize were shut.
How does it make you feel when your clients spend money with you? Does it feel icky and uncomfortable? Why do you think that is?
Today's special guest, Cristina Bold, and I dig deep into money mindset. Cristina is my own personal money mindset coach whom I worked with many years ago who helped me to identify and shift my beliefs surrounding money. Where are these feelings coming from? How can we rewrite your beliefs about money so that you feel good about your numbers and the money your clients spend with you?
Tips for rewriting toxic beliefs and rewiring your brain: Identify the lies/untruths bouncing around in your mind Determine where these untruths are coming from If you wouldn’t say it to someone you care about, don’t say it to yourself. Visualization Daily mantras/affirmations
The number one question I see photographers asking is “What should my session fee be?”
Join us as we walk through the exact process we use to help our coaching clients figure out what they should be charging their clients.
At the end of the day, it all boils down to this one single question.
How much money do you need to make to meet your income goals?
But really, it starts with- how much money to do you want to make in your pocket each and every year from your business.
Don’t think small, think big. Set your goals where you want them to be 5 or even 10 years down the road - not the safe number where you think they will realistically be.
From there, you can figure out exactly how much you need to bring in each and every year in your business, and work backward to figure out how much money you need to make from every client.
After you know that number, you get to decide how you will get your clients there. You get to choose which pricing method works best for you.
Will you charge a high session fee upfront that includes everything?
Maybe a mid-range session fee that includes a print credit?
Or a low session fee that doesn’t include anything?
Ultimately, it is up to you - but what matters at the end of the day is that you meet your target income for each client that walks through your door.
During this week’s episode, Karinda dives into why we keep getting in our own way when we are building our business and how our mind is built to protect us.
During this episode, you will learn:
How this protective mechanism isn’t always a bad thing and how all of the human race would have disappeared a long time ago if we didn't have this protective mechanism.
That our brains aren’t quite as smart as we might think, our brain doesn’t know the difference between reality and what we visualize.
How to recognize when your brain is stopping you - and how to start to re-wire your brain changing your “story” and your reality.
By recognizing when your brain is stopping you from doing what you need to do and changing the story you are telling yourself, you can stop getting in your own way and start your journey to doing what you need to do to build a profitable photography business.
On this week's episode, Karinda dives into the three ways your bad relationship with money and fears surrounding money may be impacting your photography business.
Does this sound like you?
Are you afraid to set your prices where they need to be because you are worried nobody will pay those prices?
Do you freak out at the thought of having a conversation with a client about money?
Are you wondering why you don’t have any clients, but at the same time you are worried about putting yourself and your business out there because you think people will say “you are too expensive”
Don’t worry, you aren’t alone. These are some of the most common things I see stopping my coaching clients in their tracks when it comes to building their businesses. Together, we will explore the reasons why you have these thoughts/feelings and how you can get past them. You have the ability to get over these icky throughs and feelings surrounding money and finally get out of your own way.
It might only be November, but it isn’t too early to start planning for 2023. This week we look at the importance of creating a plan for your year, month, week, day, and even hour. During our Plan Your Year Workshop we help create a strategy for planning exactly what your schedule will look like for the entire year down to the hour so that you can plan your year with intention.
Planning your year allows you to
Make decisions with an end goal in mind so that you are not wasting your time on things you don’t need to do
Have consistency and hop off the rollercoaster of “oh no it is the slow season” because you know there are seasons that you can count on happening
Ride the waves of productivity by focusing on one task or thing at a time and being highly productive
If you want to work with me to plan your year, check out our Plan Your Year Workshop where we will work through this entire process together. Our Plan Your Year Workshop takes place on December 7th, 2022.
Have you ever made decisions in your business and then felt like “this doesn’t feel right” or maybe you just feel some type of resistance and you don’t know where it is coming from?
I like to say that your “why” is like a compass in your business, it can help guide the way and make sure that you don’t fall off track.
In all reality though- it helps ensure that we truly LOVE the business we are building and connect with our clients on an entirely new level.
Our why shapes everything we do from the way we talk to our clients on an info call, the way we style our clients, the way we pose our clients, and even the products that we offer. It sets us apart from our competition and allows us to coexist with a million other photographers without ever feeling like we have to compete.
To find your why start to look at the three most impactful memories in your life, and journal about those three memories. See what themes come up and what really resonates with you from those stories.
You will know you are there when the emotions your why elicit are so strong that you find yourself choking back tears.
What if I told you that two little words are single-handedly ruining your business and the entire photography industry?
That's right. I said it.
Model Calls are destroying photographers' businesses. Model calls put the wrong message into the world. They tell your potential clients that you aren’t worth it, and in the long term they damage your brand.
After all, why would anyone pay for portraits when you are desperately trying to give away free sessions?
What if the problem could be fixed by simply spinning things the right way. What if I told you that there is a way for model calls to be done the right way?
Tune in to this week's episode to learn the correct way to build your photography portfolio while putting money in your pocket and without decreasing the value of your end product.
At a recent summit that I spoke at - I made one of the most controversial statements that had the chat exploding with comments.
I told them that I ditched my price list.
I decided to ditch my price list years ago. I realized that by having a price list I was letting my clients simply order off a menu like they were at McDonald's when instead I wanted to run my business like a 5-star restaurant.
Giving our clients a pricing menu- is like asking them to read a different language. No matter how beautiful or perfectly crafted, our clients don’t truly understand what it means.
I made the decision to get to know my clients. Determine what their needs are, educate them, and then provide them with exactly what they truly want.
As a person and a business owner, it is incredibly important that we are protective of our time and energy and we start to recognize the things in our life that do not contribute in a positive way. In this week’s episode, we will talk about how we can perform an audit of our life and business to identify the things we need to kick to the curb.
We will talk about how to
Audit your time to identify areas that might be a time suck or don't help to grow your bottom line
Audit the people in your life to identify those people that may not be contributing to your life in a positive way
Audit your business to figure out what tasks you can get rid of or hand over to someone else so that you put your focus on what you truly love to do
Performing audits is extremely important for your business- but often times we forget to audit the day-to-day of our life.
During our Plan Your Year Workshop we go into an in depth process to audit your finances and clients to tweak your business before you dive into the new year. Don’t forget to grab a seat for our Plan Your Year Workshop on December 7th, 2022.
Are you running your business by the seat of your pants, or are you planning out every last detail? One of my favorite topics to dive into is planning for the new year. In today's episode, we'll go over the 9 things that you need to do when planning for the new year. These tasks will help you to bring intention to your business while continuing to grow your business with clear methods to make sure that you're staying on track.
The 9 Things You Need to do to Plan Your Year are:
Set Clear Goals - This means we should set specific & challenging goals, write down our goals, visit our goals daily, share our goals in a community, and imagine & visualize our goals.
Plan From a Higher Place - Stop thinking small and dream BIG! Plan your life from the perspective of the you that you will be when you've "made it".
Know your Financial Goals - Determine how much you need to make from each client in order to meet your financial goals. Understanding business finances so that you can accurately plan for reaching those big financial goals.
Perform a Client Audit - Identify where your past year falls in relation to your goals. Take a look at your average client investment, what they purchased, and how big of art did they purchase, determine ways that you can increase that client investment by making tweaks in your system.
Perform a Financial Audit - Know where your money is going!
Create a Budget for the New Year - Plan for large purchases and all of the potential spending that you will do in the next year.
Mark Off your Calendar - Planning our your entire calendar allows you to set boundaries on your time and gives you a sense of stability throughout the year. Plan for your time off, what days do you want to hold client meetings, which days will you shoot portraits?
Time Block your Weeks - Determine what hours you want to work. Setting boundaries on your day-to-day schedule is just as important as your yearly schedule. It will allow you to keep a consistent schedule that you and your family can count on.
Create a Marketing Strategy with Intention - Create a marketing plan that gives you a clear and concise plan so that you know what to focus on. Market to your ideal client and know how you're going to get them through your door.
Now, if you want to go through this entire process with me, you can join us for our Plan Your Year Workshop that is happening in January -> if you miss this live event you can also grab the replay after the event. I hope to see you there!
Does the thought of in person sales (IPS) send you into a panic? Is your knee jerk reaction "I won't do that, I'm not a sleazy salesperson"? If so, I'm so glad that you're here!
In this episode, I'm going to break down the common myths about IPS. I promise you, there are no sleazy salespeople, pressuring clients, or trickery happening over here!
IPS, done right, means that you can have clients spending $5-6k on average with you on albums and wall art, while still having options for those with smaller budgets. Your clients will love the fact that you're helping them to sort through all of their portraits, deciding which ones to print. They'll be in awe of the final product because you helped them choose the right finishes and the properly sized artwork for their walls. Your clients won't be blindsided because you will prepare them properly for the investment by being clear and transparent with them from the first point of contact.
Proper preparation and systems make IPS an amazing experience for both you as a photographer and your clients.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on an IPS business model. Is that how you run your business or are you scared to make the switch? Why? How have your thoughts changed after listening to this episode? Connect with me on social media (links below) and let me know!

What is your why? The thing that drives you and your business, the reason for everything that you do?
What if I told you that you're wrong?
Is your why something that 10, 20, 100 other photographers could also say for themselves? If so, then I stand by my previous statement, you are wrong.
Your why comes from what makes you uniquely you. It pulls from all of your history, your upbringing, and your experiences.
In the marketing world, they say that consumers don't buy what you do, they buy “why” you do it. Your why will not only shape the way you run your business but will dictate the way that you dress and pose your clients, ultimately shaping the way your final portraits look.
In this episode, I'll be diving deep into this topic. After you listen, I would love to hear your thoughts on your why and how it has shaped your business!

I am a big believer that mindset and our fears surrounding money are often the biggest things that get in our way when building our business. So when I asked my coaching clients to share some of their favorite pieces of advice I was thrilled to see that many of them shared tidbits of advice that related to mindset, money, taking the leap, and just doing the things that scare you.
In this week's episode, I'm going to dive deeper into each of the following topics that were the most popular responses from my coaching clients.
Find the true meaning behind what you do - find your why
Do the scary things
Find a mentor
Pay yourself well
Ask the right questions
If you feel that any of the above points resonate with you, give this episode a listen and let me know your thoughts!
I have to give a huge shout-out to each one of the amazing ladies who contributed to this episode. I consider myself so incredibly grateful to get to be a part of your journey and I am so proud of all of your accomplishments!
Think about this for a second - Where does your pricing fall when compared to other portrait photographers? When was the last time you increased your pricing? Ok, now answer me this, why?
Human nature leads us to associate price with value and quality. By building your brand and business and presenting yourself as elite, your potential clients will save their pennies to work with you. Why? Because you have presented yourself in a way that says "I am the best at what I do". They will treat you with respect.
In turn, you will give them an unrivaled experience, providing feedback on their styling and home decor (when they choose their artwork).
Tune into today's episode and let me know your thoughts on pricing yourself "outside of the bubble".
I am excited to be heading to Imaging USA Photography Conference and thought that this would be an excellent opportunity to break down the do's and don'ts of attending a photography conference. Now I'm not talking about packing a notebook and wearing comfortable shoes. I want to focus more on ways that you can prepare yourself for all of the information that you are about to consume.
Here are 4 key things that you should keep in mind when attending a conference:
Don't reinvent your business with every speaker that you listen to
Don't ever do something just because someone else does it
Take the time to learn the reason behind every change you make in your business.
Learn to audit your business and continually check in on where your business is so that you can make adjustments and pivots throughout the year.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this episode, so shoot me a DM after you have had a listen! And if you see me at Imaging USA, introduce yourself!

One of the questions that I most frequently get asked is "I am just starting out as a photographer, what should I charge?'. And my answer might make you question me a bit. Set your prices now, for what you want/need them to be in 5-10 years down the road.
Yes, I said what I said.
Do not shortchange yourself because you are just starting out.
Dream up your ideal life situation, how much money will you need to make to reach that place? Once you have that number, you are able to determine what your session fee needs to be.
Have a listen to this episode and let me know what you think!

This week we're going to talk about finding high-paying portrait clients. Now you may have pushed "play" on this episode thinking I was going to tell you some mythical magical place where all these high-paying clients hang out. What if I told you, these clients are likely the same people you are already working with?
I know, I know. Stay with me here.
If you haven't given your clients the opportunity to invest thousands with you, how will they know it's an option? If your clients aren't educated on the different albums and wall art you offer, how will they know they're available for purchase?
Let's break down these 4 things you can do today to create those high-paying clients:
Normalize the idea of clients spending thousands on their portraits.
Start providing an experience that is worthy of your clients investing thousands
Have pricing set up in a way that makes these 5k, 10k, and 15k sales a possibility
Learn to sell without feeling like a sleazy salesperson
Tune into today's episode and let me know what you think. What changes are you ready to implement in your business? I want to hear all about it!
Are you showing up in your business? How about for yourself?
In this week's episode, that's the question I'm going to ask you and I want you to answer with an honest response. I also want to ask you, how can you show up better in your business and in your life? Take some time today to really think about that, maybe journal about it.
Or, are you hiding behind fear? The fear of failure, of people judging you? Maybe you're using your perfectionism as an excuse not to go out and do the thing.
Stay with me here, maybe you're afraid of being successful.
In this 3 part mini-series, we're really going to dive into those questions. Today's episode is about being present as the face of your business. Do your friends know what you do? Does your family? Why not? Everyone you come into contact with should know that you're a portrait photographer!
Online, in person, everywhere you go you should be shouting it from the rooftops!
What you do and why you do it, should ooze out of you with each and every interaction that you have.
Lead with your why, be present, and show up.
I'd love to know what you thought of this episode by shooting me a dm or leaving a post in our free Facebook group (linked below)!
In today's episode, I will challenge you to take action!
Stop sitting in the background of your business making sure that every little detail is absolutely perfect. I promise you, no one cares if you make that minute change to your logo or not. Or if you adjust your copy slightly.
Done is better than perfect, and it is time to launch your business.
Do The Thing
You can take as many courses and watch as many videos as you want, but the best way to get better at something, it to just do it.
What are you afraid of? What is the worst thing that could happen?
It is time to take control of your business. Take action.
It's time to change the narrative from "it's just a hobby" to "I am the CEO and business owner of a photography studio!"
Follow my social links listed below and let me know what actions you're going to take in your business today!
Are you treating your business like a business? Or like a hobby?
How you conduct and present your business to others will be directly reflected in how your clients treat you.
If you want to be taken seriously by others, you must take yourself seriously. Present yourself as an expert and business owner. Set boundaries through working hours, communication, and policies. When you communicate in a professional manner, during reasonable hours, your clients will be more likely to respect your time.
The way that you word your communication with clients can make all the difference in their level of respect for you and your time.
As a business owner, you also need to keep close tabs on your finances. Do you know where all of your money is going? Do you have monthly, quarterly, or yearly goals set? Why not?
In order for our clients to take us seriously, we must first take our business seriously from the inside out. We have to talk about our business like it is a legitimate business and like we are a big deal - even if we don’t feel like it yet.
Come find me on social media after you listen to this episode and let me know what moves you're ready to take in your business to position yourself as a true business owner.

Are you truly serving your clients, or are you just taking their photos?
When creating your customer experience, it is important to keep that question in mind. Do your clients see you as someone who shows up and pushes a button? Or do they see you as more?
Not only should they view you as an expert in photography, but also as an interior designer, stylist, artist, and lastly a photographer.
Before we even chose a location and outfit, we need to see the space where our clients are going to be displaying their wall art. The space will influence the way you direct them in choosing an outfit, deciding on a location, and how you pose them. At their photo reveal it will help you to coach them on choosing the correct size and material for their prints/frames.
One of the largest pain points for portrait clients is choosing their outfits. As their photographer, it is our job to help them look their absolute best when it comes to clothing, hair, and makeup. We want our clients to feel amazing in their photos!
So my question for you is, are you just a photographer or are you a problem solver for your clients? Tune into this episode, then connect with me on social media (links below) and let me know how you can serve your clients better.
In today's episode, I am excited to welcome special guest, Jenn Bays from Success Beyond the Lens!
Jenn had a successful corporate career in transportation and logistics before entering the virtual world of online business management. As she began to build her business she realized that the clients she was drawn to most often were photographers. Having a love of photography, and a knack for operations, customer experience, and leadership she knew it was time to niche and serve the people she loved: photographers. Now she’s taken her years in corporate and being a virtual assistant and has identified what services photographers need most. She and her team bring organization to the overwhelmed and systems to the scattered.
Having worked with Jenn in my own business, I wanted to pick her brain about how photographers can start outsourcing some of their day-to-day tasks and things to look for when hiring someone.
Some of the questions we cover are:
What signs should a photographer look for when deciding if it's the right time to outsource?
How can a photographer determine what tasks they should outsource?
What do you think is the first thing that needs to happen in order to be able to turn a task over to someone else?
What are the most common tasks your company helps photographers with?
I'd love to hear your thoughts on outsourcing in your business. Please reach out to me at the links below!
I am so excited to welcome Nicole Begley to our show today! Nicole is a zoological animal trainer turned pet photographer and educator. She is the founder of Hair of the Dog Academy, an online community in which she empowers pet photographers to improve their craft and grow their businesses. Nicole has authored the popular book “Pet and Equine Photography for Everyone”, which can be found on Amazon for Kindle.
We had a great time picking apart the intricacies of building genuine connections with your clients and why it is so important. There are a lot of photographers out there. How are you setting yourself apart from the rest? Are you asking your potential clients all of the right questions, but not converting? Perhaps, you're asking the right questions in the wrong way. Do your clients understand your why and the reasoning behind what you do? How are you making them feel throughout the process of working with you?
Tune into this episode, then head on over to Instagram or my Facebook group (both linked below) and let me know your biggest takeaways.
I am so excited to welcome Charlotte Detienne to the show today! Charlotte helps business owners write clear, compelling website copy that converts visitors into paying clients.
Your website is your digital handshake, and likely your potential client's first impression of you. As photographers, I think we tend to forget about words - and not just any words but clear and concise words that serve a purpose.
To convert visitors into paying clients, your website needs the following 3 things.
Clear Messaging - Ooey goey emotional words. This should come from your why and help your potential clients to connect with you on a deeper level.
A strong call to action - There should be zero doubt about what the next step is in hiring you.
Make it about your clients - not you. - Allow your potential client to visualize what it will be like to work with you. What problem(s) will you solve for them? Make them the hero of your website's story.
I would love to hear your takeaways from today's episode, so be sure to shoot me a DM on social media (links below)!
Today I am excited to chat with Patrice Garrison. Patrice is the founder of Successful on Social, a digital marketing strategy firm and she helps photographers who want to attract higher paying clients with ease!
As a photographer, your marketing can consist of all the pretty pictures, and nothing else. Right?
Wrong.
You marketing needs to bring value and help to connect you to your potential clients. Whether you're scheduling social media posts, emails, podcasts, etc. keep your potential client at the forefront of your mind. What can you post that will provide value, express your why, and connect with your clients?
I would love to hear what you takeaway from this episode, so be sure to reach out to me on social media (links below)!

Join us as we dig into actionable tasks that will free up your time and mental space, identifying what has to be done right now versus what we would like to do at some point in the future.
I would love to hear your takeaways from this episode and hope that you will put some of our suggestions into play so that you can find that happy place of growing your business without burnout.
Today, I am joined by fellow equine portrait photographer, Kirstie Marie! As a lifetime horse enthusiast, she has experienced first-hand the bond between a horse and a girl. She strives to capture that special relationship for each and every client. In 2015, she began offering mentoring services to other photographers and small business owners. In 2019, she developed on-demand instructional video courses on popular subjects at a more affordable price point. Her goal is simple: to help others establish a profitable, sustainable business that becomes the career of their dreams.
We're diving into the would and should haves of our portrait photography businesses. What would we do differently if we were starting our business now? Where should we have spent more time and energy?
There are a million different ways to run a business and no one way is right while another is wrong.
Kirstie and I recorded this episode a while back after seeing a pretty heated discussion in a photography group between IPS and All-Inclusive sales.
You see, Kirstie and I both run successful equine portrait businesses in Texas and offer coaching programs, however, that is where the similarities between our businesses end.
This conversation was a great one and I am excited to share it with you here and can't wait to hear your feedback.

This week's episode is a little bit different in that this is an interview from the archives that I did with Charlotte a few years ago. You see, Charlotte and I have been working together for quite a few years and I have seen her take her portrait business from a hobby where she earned some supplemental income, into a successful 6-figure brand.
Charlotte is a British-born Equine & Dog photographer located in Georgia. Having successfully run a profitable photography business, she uses what she has learned throughout her journey to help other business owners achieve the same.
While it is a blast from the past, this interview will give you a sense of where Charlotte began, the steps she took in her business, and ultimately provide you some background insight moving into next week when I catch up with Charlotte to dig into the making of the 5-figure client.
I hope that you enjoy this episode and look forward to your feedback!
This week I am excited to welcome back a good friend of mine, Charlotte!
Charlotte is a British-born Equine & Dog photographer located in Georgia. Having successfully run a profitable photography business, she uses what she has learned throughout her journey to help other business owners achieve the same.
In this episode, we dove into what it takes to create a 5-figure client.
And everything points back to presentation and customer experience. People get skeeved out by the word "sales" and it's time we normalize it and remove the sleazy car salesman stigma from it. Personally, I love to be sold to. The idea of browsing clothes rack after clothes rack makes me sick to my stomach. But let me walk into a store where the associates cater to their customers and make suggestions on things I should buy? Sign me up!
The same is true for our portrait clients. They become easily overwhelmed by which portraits to choose, and which artwork to choose. And this is where we come in, without suggestions on what size and piece will look best where.
Take a listen, and let me know what your takeaways are!
This week's episode is slightly different from the ones I have done in the past. This one is coming to you straight from my heart.
After attending a conference in California recently, something has been weighing on me and I'm ready to share it with all of you.
Additionally, I have some updates for you regarding the podcast and a Summer Bootcamp program that is launching in Mid-June.
Please reach out to me after you listen to this episode and let me know your thoughts. I'd love to have you join us in the Summer Bootcamp, but spots are limited so DM me now for the signup link!

For years, I followed advice without understanding the 'why' behind it, constantly rebuilding my business according to generic templates. Eventually, I began examining these tactics from a psychological perspective, seeking to understand why certain strategies worked for some but not others. I explored outside the photography realm for business inspiration, recognizing a lack of comprehensive business education within the photography industry.
Realizing I didn't need a complete overhaul, I learned the power of subtle tweaks and optimizations. I discovered that in this phase of business growth, small golden nuggets of insight, like adjusting your tone or setting sales limits, have a substantial impact. For those making around $2,000 to $3,000 per client, feeling the need for more growth, the frustration lies in discovering those crucial, tiny tweaks that make all the difference. It's these small adjustments that significantly propel businesses forward.

In this episode, I dig into the unique challenges of marketing in the equine and pet photography industry compared to more mainstream areas like weddings and newborns. Unlike weddings and newborns, equine/pet photography lacks a natural demand, necessitating active client education.
I stress the importance of asking clients, "Why haven't you done this?" to spark interest and create a market for equine and pet photography. Personal conversations emerge as my most effective marketing tool, emphasizing the need to seek clients actively.
The episode concludes with a reminder to optimize existing clients and revenue before expanding marketing efforts. I encourage fellow photographers to diversify strategies, systematize efforts, and not overlook the value of persistent, consistent presence in marketing.
