Most Influential Person
  • Ajahn Chah (Monk)
Effect on Emotions
  • Mindfulness has allowed me to see it and to be aware that I might be charged and not necessarily react out of that charge. To not react intently, just react appropriately.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Mindfulness and breathing are one and the same. It's the anchor, the way I stay in touch with this moment. If I'm sitting on the cushion, to really bring myself into this moment, I'll just use the breath, and just notice that I'm breathing. Sometimes I notice it in the nostrils, sometimes I notice the rising and the falling of the abdomen. Wherever it is, I'll tune in to that and use that as my anchor and then as the mind wanders, which of course it will, as soon as I notice that wandering, I come back to where I was noticing the breath and use that and just keep practicing with it.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie
  1. Find a group of like-minded people who you can get together with on a regular basis, and connect with them.
  2. Find either a book or a teacher you can connect with (as opposed to many books). Having one book or teacher allows me to be a little more focused.

  • My (adoptive) mother.
Effect on Emotions
  • Slowing down and creating some space between my sensations and my reactions or my impulses.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Breathing is responsible for seventy per cent of the toxic release in our bodies. It outperforms toxic dump of emotions and actual toxins in our body. It outperforms any other practice or way that our body releases toxins. Taking time to deepen your breath and breath into your stomach and really breathing into where two-thirds of our lungs exist produces in our body a sense of calmness. It also triggers the mind and the vagus nerve in the mind that everything is safe.

Perfection is not the goal. The whole point is just to practice. Be present when your mind drifts off on something else; acknowledge it, and bring it back to the moment. If you get distracted a hundred times a day, acknowledge it and bring it back a hundred times a day. It's not about perfect, it's about practice.

  • A person who suggested mindfulness back in Nate's twenties.
Effect on Emotions
  • It allows me to be aware of my emotions, then also lean into those emotions and figure out what they're trying to tell me or what it is that I'm experiencing. From that awareness, I'm able to change what I'm experiencing so it's almost like mindfulness has allowed me to become more masterful over my emotions.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Breathing is everything. The way that you breathe determines the way that you feel. Just last night, I could feel myself a little off, and I knew it was because I was breathing shallow. I took twenty minutes and sat up against the wall, closed my eyes and became one with my breath. Twenty minutes later it was like I was a new man. Breathing is everything.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

Learn to become aware of the state and the emotions that you experience on a moment to moment basis. Become aware of the way you feel and don't distract yourself. Don't push it away, lean into what it is you're feeling. Out of that you're going to understand so much more about yourself. You'll be able to permanently make changes whereas distraction is only a change for the moment. Do some journaling around the way you feel about your life. Meditation is always a great start, but start out with one or two minutes, rather than twenty minutes.

Effect on Emotions
  • It has given me a space to decide what I want to do with the emotion that I'm experiencing, whereas before I would react kind of in a knee-jerk way and just fly off the handle, I now have the ability to take a deep breath, take a step back, and chose how I want to respond and see if that's different to the way I'm feeling.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • I use it like a canary in a coal mine situation. I have developed a habit that if I feel myself breathing in a way that I don't find comfortable, I let that set off the alarm bells in my head that I'm missing something. That's an opportunity for me to become present and make the changes that are more useful for me at that time.

Contact Info Most Influential Person
  • Elon Musk (Founder of Tesla, SpaceX and SolarCity)
Effect on Emotions
  • It's helped me get in tune with what's happening and also figure out how to get deeper into what those things are. Sometimes when I have conversations and I ask questions, whether I'm the one who's needing help or someone else, the surface level questions don't really get into the root of the problem. Like the Toyota Manufacturing strategy of the five whys, it's when you get deeper into those conversations that the realness comes out. So I try to be mindful of the fact that people's initial answers aren't necessarily 'the' answer.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • I'm a trumpet player and I would be very focused on breathing. Now I'm taking singing lessons on Skype to try to improve my public speaking and breathing has been very important with that. And so breathing is actually, in a lot of things, the foundation for great things. And so for those things, specifically the performance stuff, I make sure to focus on breathing because it's just the foundation of creating good sound. In life in general, it's just nice to breath in terms of giving yourself space. I work hard as an entrepreneur, but I also schedule in time to breath, or have space
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

If you don't know what it's supposed to be like, it's ok. You're going to figure it out for yourself over time. You should get connected with other people who do know what mindfulness is about. You can learn as you go, you don't have to get it right the first time. You may not even know what you're doing at first, but the more you are conscious about the fact that you're trying to put this into your life, the more likely that it will.

Thoughts on Breathing
  • Getting more oxygen into your body is great for your body, your energy levels and your focus. Specifically getting six deep breaths at a time is really great for your body and your energy level. Also what I've learned is that listening to your breath during meditation can calm yourself down ... it's about listening to your breath. Doing that distracts you from everything else that's going around, enough to relax.

Michael Sandler is an all-round fascinating person. He loves to move and have fun and he’s an avid athlete who’s had more than his fair share of injuries including being hit by a car when bicycle racing in France and being walloped by a motorcycle while mountain biking in Colorado. Back in middle school, Michael ran to and from school to avoid bullies onthe school bus. Since his high school days, mindfulness and meditation have been part of his daily life, and he now meditates an average of 2 hours a day. Today Michael is a best-selling author and online entrepreneur. Interestingly, he has had a knee surgery and sinus surgery both done without any anesthetics, just with the power of the mind and meditation. Effect on Emotions
  • Hugely so, because I've become a lot less reactive. I'm a lot less of that super ball, bouncing from one thing to the next. And I'm a lot more present in myself. By present in myself, I mean I don't take ownership in the balls that are thrown at me or bounced around by others around me. If somebody throws me a fear ball, I'm able to say, 'wait, that's not mine'.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • There's conscious and unconscious breathing and I'm always trying to come back to my breath, consciously. With that said, my voice has changed over the years, and the voice that you hear on air is much more because of my mindfulness practice. It used to be 'up here' and that's because I was breathing high in my chest and I was talking really fast, and never taking a deep, full, slow breath. And so focusing on the breath calms me, brings me back into that present moment, gets my mind quieter and allows me to achieve all the things that I've achieved. So the breath really is the metronome, the heartbeat, the guide to everything.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

Focus on the breath. Just go to the breath. That can be as simple as, you're on the bus or on the subway on the way to work in the morning, just take one minute and feel the breath coming in, feeling the breath going out. Just starting from there and expanding from there. Or you're at work, at your computer, you're starting to get a little bit stressed out, go into the breath, breathe in. One, two, three, Out, one, two, three. I like throwing a count on it, that's my app, is just counting. Just drop right back into the breath.

Avoid frustration. When you think that it's an unsuccessful meditation, your reaction to that is still part of the mindfulness practice. Step out of the frustration and just keep bringing it back in.

Thoughts on Breathing
  • It's huge. It's one of the pillars that we build everything we do on. The particular tradition that I teach is called Taoist Longevity Breathing and the main focus of that is to be completely present with your breath and then how you can maintain that presence and just deepen not only the length of your breath, but all the different qualities of depth, smoothness. You just remove any and all gaps that relate back to your consciousness through that.

  • In utterly profound ways. Life is not an intellectual equation. Enstein said, I never happened on one of my discoveries through the process of rational thinking. I think the more we can get into our feelings and into our beingness and out of our thinking, that’s the only way we can live a full life. And mindfulness has done that.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • It’s seminal to it. I don’t know how to do mindfulness without it. I was even more conscious of that when I was doing different kinds of yoga. I have a lower back issue, I’ll lay on my back to let my lower back stretch out and it’s all about breathing. It’s all about breathing as deeply as I can and as slowly and quietly as I can.

The big hurdle to overcome about mindfulness, meditation and consciousness is just the nomenclature because people think it sounds eastern or too metaphysical. The way to get that out of the equation is by reading The Relaxation Response by Herbert Benson, a Harvard professor who broke apart meditation and made it more pragmatic and more scientific. You just count your breaths. Just do that without interruption and see what you feel. What you feel is called relaxation response.

  • I am so much calmer. I feel like mindfulness and meditating give you a bulletproof vest for things that happen around you. It seems like once you've meditated and you've become calm that nothing really affects you that much because you just kind of take life as it is. It slows the world down for you and makes it a lot easier to cope with.
Thoughts on Breathing
  •  Whenever I have any kind of big call, whether it's with a client or before this interview, I always take five minutes and just breathe deep, slowly and close my eyes. I don't need to meditate or anything like that but I try to slow my heart rate down so I can be as concentrated as possible.

  • I am able to really be in my body and to feel things. I wasn't always able to do that when I was younger. I allow things to pass through me and that's something I learned from Michael Singer's book, The Unteathered Soul. Allow things to pass through us, we don't want things to get stuck. Mindfulness allows things to simply flow through me.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Every breath I take; conscious, inhale, exhale. I do this so much with my clients and students now. I am grateful to be able to lead them through this practice and with my children. If you start being mindful around that, today your world will change, guaranteed.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

Start today, no excuses. Tune out what much of the world focuses on because I'll tell you it's not mindfulness. You'll start recognizing that [mindfulness], as you start developing a 'witness mentality'. Meditation allows you to have an 'observer' mentality. You will see that much of the world is engaging in things that are not healthy and high vibration. This is not to be in judgment of those people or think that you're better. It's simply to be that witness and to 'be the change you wish to see in the world', as Ghandi said. The more that you do this, the more you'll impact people in the world, even those who you think are not open.

Mindfulness specifically, checking in with your heart to bring yourself right here, right now is the best way I know of to get out of future tripping and to be able to get yourself back into a calm, action plan making state of mind.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Breath is life. We breathe differently according to what our parasympathetic nervous system is feeling. The key is that breathing can change the parasympathetic nervous system. So breathing to me is connected to mindfulness because I know that shifting the way that I breathe can change my whole physicality, change my state, and therefore change my reality.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

Literally, physically, check in with your heart. Realize when your thoughts are drifting off, which is getting out of mindfulness, and to get yourself back to the present moment, think about your heart. Feel how its beating, feel how it feels in your chest. That will not only bring you back into the present moment which allows you to be mindful, but it also centers your thinking in what is called the heart centered capacity.

No looking at each other, no physical contact. Men and women are separate. Really just very focused effort. As long as you're breathing, you need to be mindful. That's really all there is to it because its one of those things that's like, if you're not being mindful then, what else are you doing? Being mindful is washing the dishes and being aware that you're washing the dishes. It's listening to your spouse and listening to your spouse and breathing and being aware of what's happening in your immediate environment. Be patient, because like anything else, with practice comes one new level of understanding and then the next level and then the next level and just be ok with where you are now and know that there's not a destination. It's not to get anywhere other than to be present, to be more loving, or whatever it is that is your current focus. It's to amplify who you already are.

Advice for Newbie

The best way to start walking is by putting one foot in front of the other, so break down mindfulness into a digestible bite and even before you sit in a chair and build some sort of meditation practice, I would say just try practicing being fully present with one activity in your day for a set period of time. And be realistic on that time frame, like maybe five minutes. And be consistent, consistency is everything when it comes to building any kind of practice.

07 Feb 2016051 Vulnerability, Honesty and Mindfulness Solo Weekend With Bruce00:28:35

Solo Weekend with Bruce Langford. Vulnerability is the topic. You can't reach courage without stepping through vulnerability. This episode is the first of a new weekly weekend chat with Bruce. No guest, just thoughts about mindfulness and today's topic, vulnerability.

To be connected to people, you need to be willing to show vulnerability. Oprah Winfrey said, "All you really need in life is to be more of yourself". And of course that requires vulnerability. What is vulnerability? How do weaccomplish this in a society where many view vulnerability as a sign of weakness?

Bob Marley said, "Being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure." Brene Brown said, "Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change."

It takes confidence and courage to be vulnerable. The reverse is also true. Being vulnerable can give us confidence, courage and connection with the world and with others. In fact, vulnerability is our most accurate measure of courage.

"I think I fall in love a little bit with anyone who shows me their soul. This world is so guarded and fearful, I appreciate rawness so much." Emery Allen

Here are three articles I wrote for The Good Men Project which have elements of vulnerability:

Effect on Emotions
  • Mindfulness has affected my emotions in a tremendous way. I'm someone who has a great energy to achieve and do things and make things happen and connect with people but I also can tend to get frazzled or excited in a negative way. Mindfulness is the path to healing that for me.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Remembering that everything is a reflection and so if your breathing is shallow that is a reflection of how much bandwidth you have for what you can deal with in your life. You can't be upset when you're breathing deeply. Take deep full breaths and you move into a state of calm so you can deal with anything.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

Take time to meditate. Everyone should meditate 15 minutes a day unless you don't have time. Then you should meditate an hour a day (Zen proverb). The greatest advice I can give to someone is, a lot of times its easier to use thoughts because we have trouble turning the brain off and that's the toughest thing about meditation for people. Instead of resisting that at first when you're just starting down the path, instead close your eyes and do visualization practices.

Effect on Emotions
  • Mindfulness helps people keep those emotions in check so that you channel them in the best and appropriate way.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Breathing is something we all need to very much be aware of so that when life gets hectic and things start to seem like they're spiraling out of control that we can just step back and start to focus on our own breathing. That can be a difference maker. It can lower your blood pressure and your stress. Wen you take that mindful break you can come back more recharged and ready to go.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

Give mindfulness a try. Have fun, play, enjoy! When you're not focused on following the rules, but you're just focused on the moment, unbelievable things happen. Miracles happen. Don't concern yourself with following the steps outlined in a book. Understand the overall concept and start playing and practicing. Start experimenting with your own version of mindfulness and what will probably happen is you'll discover what really works for you in mindfulness and it may or may not be a carbon copy of what the 'experts' say. Give yourself the freedom to create your own program .

13 Feb 2016054 Laughter, Humor and Mindfulness Solo Weekend With Bruce00:30:33

Solo Weekends with Bruce Langford. Laughter and Humor is the topic. "There is joy in the present moment." This quote, by Pompe Strater-Vidal expresses the connection between mindfulness and humor.

Humor and mindfulness fit together and there areso many ways they do. One of the reasons is because mindfulness is about letting go and its about allowing yourself to just enjoy the moment. How can we enjoy the moment more than having humor and seeing things in a laughable way.

When I think of humor and laughing I instantly think of people like Pompe Strater-Vidal. She was a guest on my show, episode #19. Pompe has a great sense of humor, I asked her about her humor on the show. I said, "I love the way you laugh, and how much you laugh, where did this free, relaxing laugh come from?"

She said her mom had a great sense of humor and she grew up with the humor. As she's grown older, she laughs even more.

Another person I really got that feeling of joy from is Michael Sandler, episode #28. He has a wah-who (higher pitched), followed by a lower pitched, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. He has a podcast called, Inspire Nation. He feels his laugh adds energy to the moment. He notices energy a lot and when he notices the energy is getting low, he injects the moment with his unique laugh.

Another funny person whose laugh I love, is my friend Heather. She has an incredibly refreshing laugh, which I think is about letting go. There's nothing restrained about it. Suddenly something sparks that humorous cell in her brain and she just lets go. I think those all the best kind of laughs.

I love how Ellen Degeneres sees humor in so many different places and she highlights that humor on her show. There's something very light and relaxing about her humor.

"Most comedy is based on getting a laugh at somebody else’s expense. And I find that that’s just a form of bullying in a major way. So I want to be an example that you can be funny and be kind, and make people laugh without hurting somebody else’s feelings." Ellen Degeneres

Mark Twain said, "Humor is mankind’s greatest blessing."

That's probably why I married two very funny people.

Humor is also related to pain and sorrow.

"The secret source of humor is not joy but sorrow; there is no humor in heaven." Mark Twain

"There is a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt." Erma Bombeck

If we're going through something painful, being able to see humor somewhere can be helpful.

I love the humor in children. It is so natural and easy to enjoy.

"I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It’s probably the most important thing in a person." Audrey Hepburn

"Humor is everywhere in that there’s irony in just about anything a human does." Bill Nye

"A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It’s jolted by every pebble on the road." Henry Ward Beecher

"The most wasted of all days is one without laughter." e.e. Cummings

"A day without laughter is a day wasted." Charlie Chaplin

"Laughter is an instant vacation." Milton Berle

"From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere." Dr. Seuss

Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

Start on the small things. Earlier in this episode I said I made this big, audacious goal and I failed to hit it. One of the things that I've learned since then is that the main issue with goal setting is that when we don't hit it, even if we're ahead of where we planned on being, it's still very demotivating. I would say to focus on setting smaller goals that you know you can achieve and build up momentum that way. And in regard to how that relates back to mindfulness, whatever area of your life you want to integrate this into, focus on doing something small everyday that's going to help you get there.

Effect on Emotions
  • I think mindfulness is really primarily about presence, about being present in the current moment. I would like to think that's positively affected my professional life in the way that I relate to other people. Sometimes we get into these corporate situations where there's a lot of disfunction, a lot of political maneuvering, a lot of emotion. I think that being mindful and being present has a way of diffusing that, of getting into a place where you can see beyond the immediate behaviour and really understand and connect with people on an individual, deeper level, listening to the things they are saying beyond just the words that are coming out of their mouths.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Breathing is great. Breathing is something that I completely underestimated the power of. We all breathe, of course we need oxygen. Our lungs need to work in a certain way to be able to exist. My experience with breathing is truly incredible. I've worked with a breath coach that was a significant eye-opener for me. What we are able to do without physical touch, but just through our breath is amazing. Deep conscious breathing is a tool that we always have with us. We always have our lungs, we have our bodies, so we can instantly access this way of being present, of calming ourselves down, of being conscious and in the moment in the places where we get these adrenaline spikes, or these fear responses or these flight responses.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

There's no right way to do any of this. I tend to be a perfectionist by nature and so if I'm exploring something new I've got to figure out the right way to do it. There's no such thing with mindfulness. It's really just about being willing to jump in and figure out what works for you and give it a try without worrying whether you're doing it right or not.

20 Feb 2016057 Gratitude and Thankfulness Solo Weekend With Bruce00:22:41

Gratitude, being Thankful and Mindfulness Mode. "It is through gratitude for the present moment that the spiritual dimension of life opens up." I love this powerful quote by Eckhart Tolle about gratitude. He is awonderful author on the topic of mindfulness and he gets right to point here. He feels gratitude is so important that it can take us into the spiritual side of life and he feels gratitude for the present moment is most important.

Of course most of us feel some type of gratitude every day. There were times in my life when I didn't focus a lot on being thankful for the present moment, but I always have had gratitude in my life. As a family, we often talked about being grateful for what we had. My father would mention how grateful he was for rain and the weather, because he was a farmer and the weather was important in his work. There are always things to be grateful for, we just have to look around and be aware.

More Thoughts From Bruce

If you're not feeling good, or feeling happy, just start to think about what you're grateful for. This will put you into a sense of awareness. When I interviewed Hilde Larsen, she said, "Gratitude will put you in a sense of awareness every second because when you focus on being grateful, you have to be one hundred per cent mindful. You cannot be lost in anything else when you're grateful. Plus, it is a feeling, it's not a mindset. Gratefulness is a feeling. And once you connect with those good feelings, you're always grounded in yourself."

Hilde also talked about nature and how important it is to be grateful for what nature provides. I loved interviewing Hilde, because her story about how she went from ill health into becoming a very healthy person who could help so many other people, is very compelling. (047 Hilde Larsen Show Link)  I share Hilde's opinion about the importance of nature and being grateful for the natural world.

In the book, Cracking the Success Code, Brian Tracy says: “Taking the time to become an excellent human being will do more to raise your visibility, enhance the quality of your life and improve your chances for promotion than anything else you can do.” - Brian Tracy.  Brian is a very grateful person and that gratitude comes through when you hear him speak, when you meet him in person and even in his books and training materials.

I enjoyed reading the book 'The Miracle Morning' by Hal Elrod. I am so inspired by him and live my life by the morning 'SAVERS' plan he teaches in the book. Gratitude is central to Hal's philosophies. See one of Hal's quotes below.

  • Jiddu Krishnamurti, Indian Philosopher and Teacher - He said, 'If you can't meditate on a subway, you can't meditate'.
Effect on Emotions
  • When I first began my mindfulness meditation practice forty years ago, I don't think I  knew anything about my emotions. I think meditation has opened up a space in which I can really feel my emotions. Like right now, if I felt sad, I could feel it in my chest and I could say, I'm sad. I wasn't able to do that forty years ago.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • I've written a whole book on breathing called 'Conscious Breathing'. I discovered that oftentimes clients and myself would, when we were trying to cut off emotions from ourselves, would cut off our breathing. We would hold our breath or restrict our breathing. Whereas if we open our breathing up and take full easy breaths, we can be much more aware of our emotions on a moment to moment basis. So I use my breathing as a barometer of exactly how I'm feeling. If I feel a big, easy, open flow of breathing, that usually tells me things are going on really well, but if I feel myself clamping down and not breathing as much, it's because usually there's something I'm anxious about that I haven't opened up to or some worry I have that I haven't gotten clear about. So I use my breathing as a powerful barometer.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

Take ten minutes wherever you are and just pay attention to your breathing. Even if you're sitting on a subway. Don't try to make yourself breathe any which way, just take a moment to tune in and notice and then you can certainly get more elaborate with meditation if you want to use a mantra or take specific training in it, that's a really good thing also. In the beginning have the willingness and the courage to pay attention to yourself. The philosopher, Blaise Pascal, hundreds of years ago said that all of our problems as human beings could be cured if we could sit in a room by ourselves for ten minutes doing nothing.

I would say mindfulness can only be experienced. It is not something that can be talked about as much as it can be experienced, it's not something that can be read about as much as it can be experienced, it's not something that can be watched as much as it can be experienced. Experience is over all things so podcasts of this nature open doorways, they are guides, books, videos, but you must take the opportunity for yourself to sink into the space of mindfulness. • Mindfulness has supported my very g rounded, relaxed, experience so that I can actually enjoy what I am creating.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • It would shift [my breathing] if I was feeling anxious or stressed. I'm sure my breathing would change so I  think even connecting to it and I mean that is part of this meditative state of really just connecting to your breath and relaxing.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

My advice would be to play with the idea. A lot of times people are really busy and they believe that they don't have time to stop and pause, and meditate. This is what actually helps you get greater results, in fact multiple results. To play, the more you slow down, it actually supports you speeding up. That's what actually had me play with the idea of what it would be like to pause and just think things through. I am in that place now where I see; oh my gosh this is just a different way of being. It allows you to really attract like a magnet because you are so connected to what it is that you want and what it is that you are here to do, so you magnetize it. Just Introduce it to somebody as play with it, see how your life changes with you being much more grounded and mindful of what you're here to do and how to really connect to your purpose.

My way was to develop a way to implement mindfulness into something that I really loved and it naturally moved into everything else. Being aware of your surroundings and how your actions affect yourself and other people can really improve the quality of everything you care about.

Thoughts on Breathing
  • I don't focus on breathing at all now that I live here in Colorado Springs. Sometimes if I run up the stairs all of a sudden I have to take some deep breaths because the air is thinner. Breathing isn't part of my practice at all. The sahashmarg practice is actually a form of Raija yoga, which Raija yoga is one of the four main branches of yoga from India from long ago. Raija yoga is yoga of the mind so there is no breathing, no postures and no stretching.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

Start meditating in earnest. That means to learn meditation and try to really become good at it. The biggest misconception about meditation is that you are supposed to sit down and be thoughtless and so many people who come to me to learn because I teach it and say, oh I tried it and I can't do it. You're doing it. The thing is, in the beginning you're gonna have a lot of thoughts. You just have to learn how to handle them, which is to ignore them and get in the habit of ignoring them. Then as these thoughts come out, your thoughts will become less. Learning a real form of meditation; that's the base of everything I think. Without meditation, I don't know how much you can implement mindfulness or spirituality truly.

  • My two Brazilian Ju Jitsu teachers, one is a master and one is a black belt.
Effect on Emotions
  • It helps me love and accept them [emotions] and feel them fully. When I'm contracted from that mindfulness, when I'm just in the swirl of it, then they get lodged, I don't feel fully. I suppress the ones that are not so positive, that I'd rather not have. Emotions that come from some tension or a day of strife or struggle. I'd rather not feel them, but I've found that when I'm present, mindful and dialed in, that they transform through my love and acceptance of my emotions.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • In the martial arts we have this type of three part breath: from the belly, that moves like a bellows, we fill the lower part of the belly and even energetically we visualize that we're breathing even deeper into our hips and genitals on the inhalation. First the breathing of the lower body and then the solar plexus area and then the breath fulfills its expansion at the upper part of the breath, relaxing in the opposite way. So relaxing from the top down, like a bellows opening at the bottom and then closing, stoking this flame. For me, breath is the doorway in, its the immediate barometer of my awareness and mindfulness.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

The first thing a warrior sage does, they look for what are the movements, what are the things out there in life that are seeking your adherence? They want to make you part of their movement. We see so many political parties out there. They're drumming up emotions, pushing this and that and evoking opposition, we see it everywhere. Just take a look at, where is my energy, my units of emotional energy, going? Wherever it's going and you're getting evoked, you're getting riled up, you're feeling righteous, you're feeling, we need to stop this, there is deep truth in that. You don't want to deny that truth, but from a reactive place, as a warrior, you are actually losing energy, leaking energy by the excessive re-activeness. So what a warrior sage does, is they lower the importance of the very thing, paradoxically that they have vehemency against. That lowering of the importance, the units of power that were stuck in the pushing against, they reeled back, and they come back to the source of your choice. Then, paradoxically, the less you say, the more effect happens. You are able to do and achieve and create more change with the thing that you actually have interest in because you're coming from a place of greater influence, a place of of depth, so your words are heard, rather than your screams and shouts. They hear your soul speak with authority, because that is the ultimate authority.

He also meditated and lived without food for 5 days in the Sahara Desert as part of a mindfulness vision quest.

Effect on Emotions
  • It is that idea of less friction. I find that the days are so much smoother and the days where I have had most regular practice, where I have been the most conscious, have been easy. There is no car horn, no traffic and no emotional fight that can really ruffle it and it's just this feeling of, life's pretty easy. I'm just being carried along, doing my work, no road blocks, it's kind of a pleasurable feeling.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • For me one of the things I do as I work because for the last three or four years I have worked 12 hour days because I have had multiple jobs. The hardest thing for me was the stress which is despite meditating in the morning daily, despite working out, despite eating right its been kind of hard to be conscious of my stress level and to me the biggest trigger was the breath. I basically used the pomodoro technique which was a break every 25 minutes and I used that 5 minutes as a quick meditative break and I basically do a quick assessment to see what place in my stomach or my chest my breath is in. That has become the trigger for the stress I have.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

Much like any person who acquires great skill or great accolades, it all comes back to some kind of daily skill. The daily skill is the physical practice of meditation and the hard part is going to be the physical practice of meditation. Focus on whatever it takes for you to come up with a few key habits to meditate daily, whether its a time of day with some kind of ritual, maybe its not even seated meditation, maybe its walking meditation or even food meditation. Maybe food is a personal weakness of yours, try and start meditation there. Maybe it's in the gym, start meditation there feeling every fiber of your body as you lift the weight, as you run or whatever it is you're doing. I would say think carefully, what are the few vital habits you can do on a daily basis that will lead you to the more conscious, the more present life?

You look back on life and think about how many times you went from point A to point B without looking at all the different things in between. It also centers me a bit, it has an ease factor, it increases happiness, increases sleep, it's a wonderful tool to have in life.
Thoughts on Breathing

I do five big breaths here and there. Just to keep it simple with the kids we do five breath beginnings and then I'll vary it up. Some days I'll not think about my breathing and other times I'll consciously take in big inhales and exhale them quickly. Other times I'll try to sync the breathing up. I got a set of Tibetan Mala beads which I use to count the beads as I breathe.

Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

Just take a deep breath, exhale and decide you're going to start it. Just attempt to do whatever you can do. I would start with the apps. I would not try to do it by myself.

08 Apr 2016078 Talent and Mindfulness Weekends With Bruce Langford and Don Hutcheson00:32:00

Talent and Mindfulness are definitely related. If you live a mindful life you are more likely to be in touch with your talents. Some people don't discover their true talents until they are in their teens or twenties. Others don't discover their talents until they are well intotheir careers and then feel it's too late to switch and make money doing what they love.

Some people don't discover their talent until retirement and still others never feel they have discovered their talent, even to the very end of their lives.

Today I'm joined by my friend, Don Hutcheson, who has built seven companies and worked with hundreds of people. He hosts a podcast called, 'Discover Your Talent, Do What You Love'. As you'll discover, he has tremendous knowledge and insight into 'Talent and Mindfulness'.

Effect on Emotions
  • That 16 to 22 age range was so helpful being around animals. I think if you are inclined to be way up and way down (emotionally), which I am really not, I tend to be pretty level. But if you are, and everybody goes through it, it's such a great way to be humble, to care for something that doesn't really ask for anything in return. I would say that is the biggest help for me is being around animals and moments when you really need to stay centered and grounded.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • I work on it all the time. I think that our biggest enemy is something that throws our equilibrium off and breathing is the first thing that will get thrown off. If we're not breathing, everything else goes.

Effect on Emotions
  • I'm a really emotional guy. I wear my heart on my sleeve and mindfulness helps me to be aware of that. And aware that other people aren't like that and sometimes I can make them uncomfortable by spilling my emotions all over the place. I have to be mindful of that and know where and when to reign that in.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • A lot of times I can't sleep at night, and laying there and taking deep breaths in and out, because my mind is just crazy, it's going a million miles an hour and if I'm just focused on breathing in and breathing out it really helps to slow me down. It's one of the only times that I think I'm being particularly mindful by doing a physical activity.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie

Choose your beer wisely. Pick something that you really enjoy. Think about what you like; do you like sweet, do you like bitter? And then consider the alcohol content. Sit down with a beer, whether it's your favourite or something new that you want to try and just focus on the balance of the beer. Let's forget about the balance of ourselves for a second. I think that's the ultimate goal, but let's focus on the balance of the beer. And I think that you'll find yourself really in the moment with that beer.

Effect on Emotions
  • It has actually helped me take a step back and look at the bigger picture and say do I actually need to feel this way right now or am I over reacting or under reacting cause it can go both ways. That's what mindfulness has done for me on an emotional state.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • You gotta breathe. I used to find myself especially talking to people that were in a higher position than me in retail. I used to find myself holding my breath a lot and you know that would not help me answer their questions at all because I would have to let my breath go  and then I would start to think about the question they just asked me. It just always made it look like I wasn't there and I didn't know what I was talking about. Breathing during situations and being mindful of that and knowing that you get nervous during those times actually helps you through it especially breathing. I really think that it's common for people to hold their breath back in situations like that.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie
  • I would say they need to get past the stereotype and the "oh I don't wanna listen to a Guru" stereotype. I think a lot of people are not looking at the benefits but they are looking more at the person who is teaching it to them. The person is just a vessel to bring that information to you. Don't focus on that person necessarily, focus on what you can learn from that. That will take you a lot further than worrying about who is teaching it to you all the time and getting your head wrapped around that.

23 Apr 2016084 Fear and Mindfulness Weekends with Bruce Langford00:26:03

Fear is something we can be mindful about. We all have it at times, but do we all identify the feeling? Do we know how to deal with fear and move through it? Or do we let the fear move through us? Fear can stem fromexperiences that happen early on in our lives. Fear can come on suddenly or gradually. Fear can disappear quickly or can gradually disperse. In this episode I discuss fears, how they can grip us and how being mindful can help diminish the fears that live within us.

Quotes:
  • FEAR - False Evidence Appearing Real
  • Some people say fear has two meanings: 1. Forget Everything And Run & 2. Face Everything And Rise. THE CHOICE IS YOURS.
  • Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
  •  I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times. - Bruce Lee
  • Courage is not living without fear, courage is being scared to death and doing the right thing anyway. - Chae Richardson
  • Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears. - Les Brown
  • I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. - Nelson Mandela

Effect on Emotions
  • It's helped me to understand, to be more present and look out for triggers. As I was talking about this women in my life, she is still somewhat a part of my life and where we go from here we don't know yet, let life take it's course and just let it be. It Helps me where I get triggered and how do I respond to things. I have just become more mindful of my emotions and things are going to happen in your life but how you react to them is up to you.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • You know breathing is something I need to examine a little bit more, I don't do it all that well yet. The only thing that I do with breathing and it just calms me and makes me push further like on my runs, when I think I am exhausted and can't go any further. I think I am pretty much there I just need to change the application, I just breathe in and breathe out and out of nowhere I am another 50 yards down the road.

30 Apr 2016087 Anxiety and Mindfulness Weekends With Bruce Langford and Jeffrey Agostinelli00:33:45

Anxiety and mindfulness. "Compulsion can become a form of anxiety, like doing things just to do them." Jeffrey Agostinelli

Anxiety can bring you down and it can also bring down a family. It can pull your life to a halt. When I think about anxiety, I think about a time when I was about eight years old, I lived on the farm with my family and I noticed that my mom was unhappy. She cried a lot. She seemed upset and I didn't know why.

Then she got this rash all over her hands. It was psoriasis. At first it was little patches and then it got to be on more of her hands and up her wrists. It was red and raw and very painful.

It was difficult for her to do anything. She would wear rubber gloves or cotton gloves to protect her hands. It was a really hard time because we all knew how much pain she was in and how much she was suffering. It seemed like there had to be a reason.

She went to the Doctor over and over and the Doctor didn't know what to do. She tried different creams and nothing seemed to help. There was always this overriding feeling where I noticed how unhappy she was. It was like a desperation. Unhappiness shrouded her entire life and her personality.

Then I think she started to get focused on doing things that she liked to do. She started to knit and do crafts and other creative activities. Then the psoriasis started to go away. I don't know if that was a coincidence but I wonder if it was the mindfulness of working on those crafts. I think this really helped her to move forward and then the psoriasis eventually left.

Effect on Emotions
  •  I have really been able to adjust my emotions as far as just letting go and being able to receive, instead of always trying to push. If I feel like I'm getting worked up about something that means I am pushing and that means I'm not gonna get something that I want. I really need to sit back, take a deep breath and allow it to come to me.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Breathing is so important. In yoga it's called pranayama. It not only nourishes the cells by oxygenating them. It opens up the connection between your pinial and petuatary glands to connect you to your higher self. That breath is life so oxygen is water, it's in air, and it's in our bodies. It allows our bodies to live, if we stop oxygenating then we start to die. The more you can breathe deeply in your day and clear out that stagnant air at the base of your lungs. Five deep breaths in the morning is a really good way to start your morning, it gives you a really fresh start to the day. I would recommend that.

Advice for Newbie

I would suggest trying to connect to nature for a bit if you're not one to go outdoors very much and to really try and get away from being plugged in all the time. Nature is a great way to do that, kids naturally gravitate there but adults can benefit from that too. Just a walk in nature, gardening is a great way, and sleeping outdoors when it's warm is really grounding. People are selling grounding mats that plug into your wall inside as healing mats. You don't have to spend a thousand to twelve hundred dollars on one of these mats when you can go, when it's just grounding you to the earth basically. So you can go outside it's cheap and easy, rent a tent and spend some more time outside. The more time you spend outside the more your rhythm starts to change. You start resetting your rhythm which is what meditation is great at doing, reset your body rhythm.

Effect on Emotions
  • I believe mindfulness has affected my emotions by showing up focused on the client in a more empathetic, compassionate and caring way that better serves the client and for some reason that naturally tends to create trust and gets a better result all around.

Thoughts on Breathing
  • Breathing's huge. I believe a lot of times my meditation is literally ten minutes of deep breathing and it's calming down because often I'll catch myself going through a really busy or stressful day. That breathing is really shallow and that's where I see myself kind of just getting close to just getting off the game plan or off the rails a little bit. I think breathing just helps center us and reconnects us back to a calm place and to think and be aware.

Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie
  • The advice I would give is to just realize that getting through the day, going through the motions, playing the role of a father, a mother, a student, a son, a daughter, employee, employer, co worker, that's not all life is. If we can step back and we can actually connect, we can navigate all those roles in those situations better. I think all of us have this enate desire to have a more connecting, fulfilling experience I think that's why awareness would be an attracted place for someone who is not exposed to it and maybe be curious enough to start.

07 May 2016090 Imagination and Mindfulness Weekends With Bruce Langford00:27:46

Imagination and mindfulness fits together beautifully. What does imagination conjure up for you? For me, I think of children. I think of the book, Alice in Wonderland, by Luis Carroll. There is so much to think about in that book that connects imagination with mindfulness.

The topic of imagination takes me back to my childhood. Even though I have four brothers and two sisters, I felt alone a lot of the time. My brothers were off doing other things. My mom suggested I go visit Frieny who lived back by the tree. I'd ride my bike there and spend time fully immersed in my imagination.

Looking back, I have a different perspective. At times in my life people would imply that people who had an imaginary friend as a child, were not quite like the rest of us. Maybe something was off about that person.

Now I believe it is completely healthy for kids to use their vivid imaginations and I look back and think it was totally cool to use my creativity the way I did.

When I was creating my anti-bullying presentations, I decided to use my creativity to write songs to grab the attention of children and adults. I believed a great way to connect with the world and share a message was to create something.

I remember going back to a school where I had presented anti-bullying shows three years earlier. The students had moved on to higher grades, but still remembered many of the catchy songs I had shared with them during my first visit.

One of the songs was called, "Confidence". I believe we need to share concepts of confidence with children because that is sometimes the reason why kids are picked on, is because they don't exhibit enough confidence. Sometimes we just have to take a deep breath and show confidence. Using mindfulness concepts can also help children to be more confident.

Some days I would sit at the piano and think about composing a song about a particular topic, like confidence for instance. At first I'd feel blocked, but then I'd realize it was simply a matter of allowing myself to just go there, to relax. And what would relax my mind and not put pressure on myself?

I'd put my hands on the keyboard, take a breath and just let my fingers play certain notes and melodies. I'd experiment with catchy sounds and before long I'd be thinking about words and thoughts that had to do with that topic.

I'd ask myself, 'What are three major thoughts about this topic?'. Then I'd think of three other thoughts to support each of the major thoughts. Before long I'd have a song. I love writing songs and it's kind of funny that some of the best songs just seem to come randomly.

The Wizard of Oz is a great movie to think about when we think about the topic of mindfulness. It has incredible messages for entrepreneurs and really anybody who is interested in how imagination relates to mindfulness.

Quotes:
  • Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality. Lewis Carroll - Alice in Wonderland
  • The best use of imagination is creativity. The worst use of imagination is anxiety. Deepak Chopra
  • I think the world needs happy people with a high dose of crazy and a quiet conscience. Anon
  • Everything you can imagine is real. ― Pablo Picasso
  • “A child's spirit is like a child, you can never catch it by running after it; you must stand still, and, for love, it will soon itself come back.” ― Arthur Miller, The Crucible

Do I wanna go to war on this one, I think is the big question for anyone who is in a marriage has asked themselves is this the argument or is this the conversation I want to go to war over and it rarely is.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • My son and our foreign exchange student were in Davis and in a hot tub and playing around a couple weekends ago and there was a clock on the wall. We were having competitions for holding our breath, I don't know what that means but there maybe is a calmness that comes from not living sugar free or for the concentration of juggling. I won the contest by just breaking two minutes underwater in a Jacuzzi. I do enjoy breathing I do love taking deep breaths to calm myself down sometimes.
Suggested Resources Advice for Newbie
  • What I would recommend somebody do is some of the things you just talked about, breathe and develop some sort of litmus test of am I being mindful right now. I think you know what comes up as I say that Bruce is really mindfulness is different for every person and so to get some definition, if you're someone who watches a lot of TV who has never done any sort of personal growth work. For you maybe mindfulness is getting through a podcast, a twenty five or thirty minute podcast with two or so people talking about mindfulness, that might be a huge step of your heroes journey. If you are living in some sort of mindfulness now what's the challenge you can do for yourself that feels on the edge, what is an edge that you are willing to lean into.

13 May 2016093 Vision and Mindfulness Weekends With Bruce Langford00:14:08

Vision is necessary to exist. At least that's my opinion and that of many others as well. Life is much more enjoyable when it feels like a journey. Step by step you are moving closing to your vision of what you would like your life to be like. Mindfulness lets us move forward without the stress and anxiety that is sometimes present. What does the word vision mean to you? Because I'm a musician, I often think about starting to learn a piece of music and moving toward a place where I can perform that selection.

Nature and mindfulness; there are so many ways to connect with ourselves and each other through nature. Do yourself a favour and determine to spend some time in nature this weekend.

Effect on Emotions
  • I have learned how to ignore the rest of the worlds judgement on emotion and pursue momentum. I think that for most of us people that think like you and I do have a hard time with happy, sad, frustrated, ticked off, pissed off, and confused, we don't know the difference. For me learning who I really was and getting a higher level of presence showed me that my life's motivation is to create momentum, forward motion and innovation not happiness. That's a bulls**t term that doesn't work for me.

Thoughts on Breathing
  • I think there is four pillars to becoming a transformational leader, breathing, hydration, nutrition and movement. Most people would say I was crazy because I didn't name one thing about the functions of being a leader, but if you breathe, you hydrate, you're supported nutritionally and you move an appropriate amount, you will be the most present person in the room.

Advice for Newbie
  • Get away from electronics as much as you can and don't turn a screen on in the morning until you have had at least an hour or two of time to become present and plan your day. Then understand your intention for the day and record were you uncomfortable yesterday, that will take you out of the constant reactivity most humans are in today.

Focus and mindfulness; people often ask me how they can improve their focus. Today, we talk about the importance of having a clear focus.  Think about how increased focus could improve your life.

Quotes:
  • "Life is like a camera, just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.”
  • “People make their choices about where to focus based on their perception of what matters to leaders." Daniel Goleman
  • "The successful warrior is the average man with laser-like focus." Bruce Lee
  • "To me, living in the present means being aware of your conscious choice to focus on the past, present or future - it is not necessarily having to focus on the present." Bo Bennett

Effect on Emotions
  • It has really just made me more present and it has made me just less dramatic of a person. I am not so stressed out about the future and regretting the past and thinks I now can't control. It has just made me more of a present, relaxed and calm individual.

Thoughts on Breathing
  • When I meditate every day and I have that headband on that is measuring my brainwaves, when I am doing well it is because I am breathing deeply and really thoughtfully. When I am not I've noticed that my breathing really has shifted and I am not really focused on my deep breathing and more on my shallow breathing, so it's been a big impact.

Advice for Newbie
  • Start slow, a couple minutes a day, just sit down and be quiet, just breathe and just close your eyes so you can be present in the moment and focus on your breathing. Go to three minutes and then a couple weeks later go to four. Then maybe if you can invest in yourself or invest in an app or invest in something like this chose muse device that I use which is really powerful and just continue to grow slowly and surely.

Effect on Emotions
  • One hundred percent it has because it allows you to be calm and master your emotions because your emotions can result in some of the most erratic actions. It really helps you and for me to really think logical before I react out of emotion.

Thoughts on Breathing
  • Breathing is a big part of it just because with anything, with breathing, air, oxygen that's what keeps you centered. That's me when I am practicing yoga but that what keeps you centered and that's what keeps your body centered. So even throughout both physically or mentally our most tedious points or experiences, breathing is always what will keep you centered.

Advice for Newbie
  • The most important thing is momentum and what I mean by that is breaking it down to very very small steps. I once heard that habit is formed after three weeks. After practicing something for three weeks it becomes a habit so whether it's making sure you just drink two liters of water a day, just something as simple as that. If you are continually building on that and making that a habit and practicing it over and over again you are going to build momentum and then you're going to be able to take on something else. For mindfulness start small and build on it, gain momentum to move forward.

04 Jun 2016102 Change Your Thoughts Using Mindfulness Weekends With Bruce Langford00:06:29

Change your thoughts and let mindfulness help you do it. Dr. Wayne Dyer encourages you to do the same. He even wrote and entire book dedicated to this concept. It is based on the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu.

Quotes:
  • If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
  • How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours.
  • When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself.
  • “You must become the producer, director and actor in the unfolding story of your life.” — Wayne Dyer
  • “Doing what you love is the cornerstone of having abundance in your life.” — Wayne Dyer
  • “There is no scarcity of opportunity to make a living at what you love; there’s only scarcity of resolve to make it happen.” — Wayne Dyer
  • “Passion is a feeling that tells you: this is the right thing to do. Nothing can stand in my way. It doesn’t matter what anyone else says. This feeling is so good that it cannot be ignored. I’m going to follow my bliss and act upon this glorious sensation of joy.” — Wayne Dyer
  • “What we think determines what happens to us, so if we want to change our lives, we need to stretch our minds.” — Wayne Dyer
  • “The more you see yourself as what you’d like to become, and act as if what you want is already there, the more you’ll activate those dormant forces that will collaborate to transform your dream into your reality.” — Wayne Dyer
  • “Change the way you look at things and the things you look at will change.” — Wayne Dyer
  • “Not only do you become what you think about, but the world also becomes what you think about. Those who think that the world is a dark place are blind to the light that might illuminate their lives. Those who see the light of the world view the dark spots as merely potential light.” — Wayne Dyer
  • “If you believe it will work out , you’ll see opportunities. If you believe it won’t you will see obstacles.” — Wayne Dyer
  • “Begin with the end in mind. Start with the end outcome and work backwards to make your dream possible.” — Wayne Dyer
  • “A belief system is nothing more than a thought you’ve thought over and over again.” — Wayne Dyer

  • It has definitely helped so much in my life. It has made me happier, it really has and being mindful has made me more grateful for the world around me. It has made me realize that we live in an amazing place, so I can't say enough about how much it has impacted me.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Breathing really helps me get centered and it relieves stress from my life, so when I feel like I have a million things that are discombobulated in my head, just taking a step back, working on my breathing, being present. This really relieves so much stress from my life and as a fitness guy I'm going to say that it will help decrease your cortical levels. You wanna keep your cortical down so having some type of stress relief practice in your life can really help with that and breathing is just one of those things.
Suggested Resources

Advice for Newbie
  • Don't think that you have to do a million things to get benefits from it. Start with one simple practice, take timeouts during your day. If your stressed out at work just take a couple minutes every single day to get up and move around, take some deep breaths and you can build on things. If your starting with meditation, you might start with a simple hundred count breathing exercise and then expand on that as you become more comfortable with it but simply it at first. Build small incremental habits one step at a time and over the long haul you will see a ton of results.

Effect on Emotions
  • It definitely makes me much more even keeled. Since I started meditating I would say that I am much better able to handle the ups and down's of life much more quickly and have a better response to them.

Thoughts on Breathing
  • I am one of those people who probably holds my breath and gets way too intense in the moment at times. I think for me the number one thing is when I catch myself holding my breath and being so over the top intense, just taking a deep breath and just slowing down and decompressing. Also walking away from things for a minute so that I can gain some perspective, then revisiting them is the way I have to handle that.

Advice for Newbie
  • I would say get started on doing what comes naturally to you. If you like to walk outside, go for a walk and instead of listening to the radio or listening to music just say for ten minutes I am going to get still and present and just count my blessings. Find something that is a match for your personality for what's most comfortable for you. Definitely give yourself an opportunity to take a couple minutes for reflection everyday in a way that feels right for you that incorporates in your life. It will absolutely have an affect on not only your success but also your happiness.

11 Jun 2016105 Consistency and Mindfulness Weekends With Bruce Langford00:08:09

Consistency paired with mindfulness will help you achieve your most important goals. Stick with it. I'm sure you've heard that plenty of times. Consistency can be one of the trickiest concepts, because as humans, we tend to see things differently depending on our mood and the world around us. When you decide on a goal, it is important to also decide at the same time to be consistent.

Create a habit to help you achieve your goal and keep that habit going. Be consistent and you will notice you'll start to do the action like its on auto pilot. This is what I found when I was learning to play the piano, then later the accordion and saxophone. Sometimes my mind would tell me the song was too hard, I'd never get the rhythms, and I might as well give up. In spite of those voices, I'd usually end up practicing anyway, and by being consistent, putting in the time and sticking with it, I'd eventually learn to play the piece of music I was working on.

Quotes:
  • “Whatever you hold in your mind on a consistent basis is exactly what you will experience in your life.” Anthony Robbins
  • It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently. Tony Robbins
  • If you are persistent you will get it. If you are consisted your will keep it. Anon
  • Consistency is not perfection. It is simply refusing to give up. Tina Reale
  • Consistent action creates consistent results. Christine Kane
  • We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. - Aristotle

Effect on Emotions
  • I am more able to observe my emotion, I'm more calm and I don't react in an intense, volcanic way like I used to when I was younger. I can really observe scenarios and say okay you know what this is really upsetting me because xyz is that what you meant and then the other person says no that's not what I meant. I can talk through things without having an intense, emotional reaction and I think that is from being so mindful and all the meditation work that I have done.

Effect on Emotions
  • Mindfulness has allowed me to get my emotions in check, and emotions that were otherwise way out control. It gave me the opportunity to pause and take stock of where I was and what I needed to do.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Breathing is probably the foundation of my mindfulness practice. Simply the act of taking a deep breath when I think something or I am racing gives me enough pause to stop and really determine what the right action is. I've always learned in order to change directions you have to stop first and you know my brain doesn't know how to stop without physical queues. Taking a deep in-breath and blowing it out is a significant part of that stopping. Similar to my concept of spirituality is I breathe in the universe and I breathe out Michael. Just that simple visualization of Michael being that out of control, out of touch set of emotions in my body, I simply breathe in the peace that is out there and I breathe out myself.
