20 Dec 2022How to STAY in the GAME when you are less than your best – Rick Fehr #24301:06:40

Developing your own ‘CHOKE’ shot

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by a special guest in the shape of two time PGA Tour winner Rick Fehr

Rick played on the US Walker Cup team at Hoylake in 1983 with the likes of Brad Faxon and Willie Wood. As an amateur he played in both the US Open and the Masters.

We got the chance to discuss how he developed his game in the early days by spending so much time ON the GOLF COURSE with an absence of too much ‘conventional’ coaching.

Rick is now one of the top coaches in the USA bringing his wealth of playing knowledge with an incredible breadth of coaching experience.

So much of golf is about getting the best out of what you have TODAY be that your B or C game. Rick has a really refreshing take on how to do that. Being able to find a way to get the job DONE.

  • How he developed his golfing SKILLS
  • The correlation of cause and effect
  • Developing TRUST in the feels in his swing
  • Falling in love with the challenge of golf
  • The vulnerability of tour players and how easy it is to fall into the trap of taking on too much advice
  • Changing a pattern that works
  • The dangers in the game today of producing ‘laboratory golfers’
  • The need to develop a ‘choke’ shot. The ability to FIND the golf course when you are feeling much less than your best
  • Why you should have the courage to ‘shape’ your shots in your training.
  • How SIMPLICITY is so under valued.
  • When are you going to be DONE with your golf swing?
  • The limitations of on course analytics and how we need to factor in the ‘human effect’
  • Why do we make putting SO complicated and what to do about it

A really great session with a very experienced player and coach. His thoughts will have a BIG impact on your game

21 Jul 2023The Secrets of the ‘Golf Machine’ – Randy Joyner #27101:04:59

It is great to welcome back onto the podcast my good friend Randy Joyner.

Randy is one of the top coaches in the US and works with a host of great players including PGA Tour winner Derek Ernst

We have spent many hours in the past discussing how his coaching shares so much similarity with the concepts of the Mind Factor.

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: https://urlgeni.us/mindcaddie

Join us in Manchester in November and become a CERTIFIED MIND FACTOR COACH – or simply come to improve your own game, go to : https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/

Randy has been kind enough to say how much the Mind Factor certification has helped his own evolution as a coach

In his development into being a top coach Randy spent many hours immersed with the philosophies of the ‘Golf Machine’. The legendary book written by Homer Kelley in the late 1960’s which has influenced so many of today’s top coaches.

On first impression the Golf Machine would seem to be totally at odds with many of the ideas we have discussed over the past few years on the Brain Booster.

Yet with this conversation with Randy he gave me real clarity as to why it became such an important book and how with a clearer understanding it is actually much more simple in its practical application to the golfer.

Also more importantly for Brain Booster listeners it becomes apparent listening to Randy how you can apply the principles of

  • INTENTION
  • ATTENTION and
  • ATTITUDE within the framework of the Golf Machine

We discussed :

  • The THREE key principles of the Golf Machine
  • The role of the RIGHT arm
  • The benefit of RIGHT ARM only swings
  • How to use ‘pressure’ in the golf swing
  • How you can link ATTENTION to right finger pressure throughout the swing
  • How the SHOT links back to Golf Machine principles
  • What is THE ultimate simplification?

A wonderful communication demystifying the mystique that often surrounds the GOLF MACHINE

He has a tremendous ability to simplify what we need to pay attention to as golfers and how to get the absolute maximum from our practice time.

How can we REALLY simplify the game to make significant progress?

We explore in great detail THE BIG THREE of impact and why they are so vital to your improvement

Virtually EVERY single shot you have hit in the past that you don’t like will have been affected by one of these three factors

  • Club Face Orientation
  • Strike Location
  • Ground Contact

Yet so often we then focus on almost everything else to try to find a solution.

Yet if you can stay with the BIG THREE you will be dealing with actual evidence from the scene of the crime IMPACT

Why are we trying to master the swing when it can NEVER be mastered?

Yet we can move in the direction of mastery with the BIG THREE

We can aim to have so much more fun in practice as we EXPLORE our capabilities around these areas.

  • Can you present the face slightly open?
  • Slightly closed?
  • Off the toe?
  • Off the heel?
  • Now you can find the middle
  • Now you can find SQUARE

We got to explore so many interesting avenues in this conversation and I believe it perfectly ties in with the Mental game Big Three of Intention, Attention and Attitude

19 Aug 2022What are the keys to a RESILIENT Mind – Matt Caldaroni #22800:57:06

In today’s unpredictable and chaotic world the mental skill of resilience is one to be really prized and developed.

In the game of golf being resilient to the inevitable setbacks the game throws at you is a major asset and one the very best players have in abundance.

On today’s Brain Booster we are joined by Matt Caldaroni a Performance Coach specializing in RESILIENCE

Matt Caldaroni, was faced with adversity at the age of twelve. A coach tried to rip away his lifelong dream of becoming a professional soccer goalkeeper, telling him the sport just wasn’t for him.

At that moment, Molliteum was born. Matt had realized that in order to get to where he wanted to be, he needed to be in charge. Nothing in life was going to be given but needed to be taken.

Matt weaponized the adversity he experienced and became the best version of himself. Earning himself a scholarship at the age of seventeen, he made the jump to the professional ranks of soccer, in Italy, at the age of nineteen. It was here that Matt realized there was an unseen advantage that lay beneath the surface within us all:

resilience saved his career.

Most of the time in sport and in life we are faced with setbacks and disappointment.

We don’t hit the shot we want

We don’t make the birdie we expected

We finish down the field in a tournament

Our handicap doesn’t come down

Setbacks are part of the game of life

How we DEAL with those setbacks is the very heart of the resilient mind

With Matt - We discuss:

  • The four cornerstones to building resilience
  • How you build your IDENTITY as a resilient person
  • The key steps to resilience

Building a resilient mind and body

02 Dec 2022Tour Tempo – Is this the MISSING link to performance?  - John Novosel Jnr #24000:47:48

How many times have we been told to ‘swing it slow’?

We will have read that you can’t take the club away too slowly.

Get the takeaway just right and everything else will fall into place!

How well has that gone for most of us

Possibly these clichés are some of the most damaging myths in the game

Also when we TRY to swing slow we give ourselves the opportunity to become really tied in knots with swing technique and trying to ‘place’ the club in certain positions.

Well on today’s show many of those myths and misconceptions will be challenged by our guest John Novosel from Tour Tempo

John will share with us some amazing insights that he and his father have gathered over the past 20 years or so

It would seem that many of us should actually be allowing ourselves to swing the club much more freely and in effect more quickly.

Being aware of the swing as opposed to trying to influence the swing.

It will be music to many Brain Booster listener’s ears.

From Tour Tempo research there is a specific 3 to 1 ration that ALL great players use in terms of their tempo

This is a REALLY fascinating session with someone who is absolutely passionate about game improvement.

You will think TOTALLY differently about TEMPO and how it applies to your game.

John Novosel Jr. is the Co-Creator of Tour Tempo. Tour Tempo is the best selling book published by Doubleday and is a 5 star app for iOS. In addition to TT, he has patented or co-patented 4 swing training aids. He recently authored Tour Tempo Force, which hit #1 on Apple books for all sports.

He has given thousands of ’speed lesson’s to golfers of all abilities from Major Champions thru beginners. He also walks the walk, at 52 years old he produces swing speeds over 130 mph and has competed in long drive events, his longest drive in competition is 402 yards.

John has presented his concepts on Tempo, Speed and Power around the globe including seminars with PGA Sweden, PGA Holland, PGA Germany, PGA of America, the World Golf Fitness Summit and many others.

He has certifications with TPI, SSC Golf, and has his own certification program for Tour Tempo Speed Instructors.

27 Jan 2023An insight to the mind of Bryson De Chambeau and how YOU can simplify green reading – Tim Tucker #24700:55:58

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by a fascinating guest Tim Tucker the former caddie of the unique Bryson De Chambeau.

As a partnership they won a number of PGA Tour titles including the US Open

It was a great insight into a very different golfer and the way he formed such an effective partnership with his caddie

How he was prepared to always do things his own way but also very open to taking on board good quality information from Tim

  • How they worked out how to beat the golf course
  • Bryson’s incredible body transformation and how he set about accomplishing it
  • The way he deals with poor shots on the course
  • His obsession with the Driver and how many balls he will hit in a day
  • Why his putting is so underrated
  • How they actually brought home the US Open trophy when the heat turned up on Sunday afternoon

Bryson’s ability to leave no stone unturned. To sift through information and find out what is USEFUL for him

A very unique and fascinating character.

Also we discuss Tim’s own journey in golf from a background in the military to caddying at Bandon Dunes, learning Aim Point and then the partnership with Bryson.

After the relationship with Bryson concluded Tim has gone on to invent and create the True Aim Marker

A fascinating way to read greens that eliminates guesswork

We go into some good detail on how it works

Tim firmly believes that most golfers don’t need to spend more time on improving their stroke but they DO need to get better at reading greens.

A lot of poor putting strokes are a result of VERY poor green reading.

The True Aim Marker has the potential to massively improve your green reading

Well worth taking a look

10 Feb 2023How you can LEARN to LEARN like Tiger Woods – Peter Arnott #24901:06:22

How you can LEARN to LEARN like Tiger Woods – Peter Arnott

Today we welcome back onto the Brain Booster Peter Arnott.

Peter has been a previous guest on the show and in this session we get to discuss his fantastic new book called ‘Swing it like Tiger’ which he wrote in partnership with Ian Renshaw who is an expert on skill acquisition

As Peter informs us the title of the book is deliberately misleading to some people who do actually want to swing the club like Tiger Woods.

When in fact Tiger has had multiple swings and indeed on every shot he plays he will adapt his swing in that particular moment to the very task he has before him.

The book is very much about how you can LEARN to LEARN like Tiger

  • How to TRAIN more effectively like Tiger
  • We look in detail at how Tiger learned how to develop his game
  • How the environment he and Earl created together was so rich in learning opportunity
  • Steve Williams who was Tiger’s caddie for many years talked about how Tiger practiced differently from all of the other players he had worked with including Greg Norman and Raymond Floyd
  • He challenged himself constantly with the QUALITY of his practice
  • The challenges, the games
  • Human beings are not designed to replicate movement precisely
  • We are far better at ADAPTING to the challenge presented to us in any given moment
  • We talk about the need for variability in your training environment
  • How trying to go with ‘one shape’ can actually be very detrimental and what to do to bring your game back into balance
  • How you can create your own PAR to suit your game instead of making poor decisions based on existing ‘par’
  • How elite golfers can make their own course more difficult to make their training more effective
  • Seeing the golf course as an opportunity to be creative
  • How to make your training come alive in a RICH environment
  • Find out what you REALLY want from the game and then tailor your training more effectively
  • How our environment will ALWAYS effect the way you move and what you need to do about it
  •

A great session with a really well researched and well informed coach

Enjoy

Peter is a performance and practice golf coach based at Swanston Golf Academy in Edinburgh, Scotland. He has a masters degree in skill acquisition and motor learning interviewing 7 top European Tour Players (+£15 Million won on Tour) on their development towards excellence.

26 May 2023Mind Trak and what it can do for your game – Richard Zokol #26400:54:10

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by former PGA Tour winner Richard Zokol the pioneer of what is called Mind Trak golf

Richard won on the PGA Tour wearing headphones and we discuss how this eventually led to his discoveries around the mental game

Richard Zokol’s PGA Tour career spanned over 20-years, winning twice on the PGA Tour (both wins in 1992) while competing in 412 PGA Tour events and winning once in 53 starts on the Web.com Tour (in 2001).

Recognized as a professional golfer with a distinct perspective, Richard is one of the most dedicated and determined professionals in Canadian golf. Richard “walked-on” the BYU Golf Team as a freshman then by his senior year at BYU, he captained the team to the 1981 NCAA Championship—that team was inducted into the Brigham Young University Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

Richard was also inducted into the British Columbia Golf Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 2011. Zokol’s passion capital served him well in PGA Tour competition and then as he transitioned into business.

We discuss how you can get the very best from your game on the course with the TWO critical markers

  • The ability to assess the shot
  • The ability to EXECUTE the shot
  • To get out of reactive thinking
  • To reduce the excessive attention on RESULTS
  • To REALLY tune in to the GOLF COURSE
  • To be present to your assessment of the shot
  • How to reduce emotional interference
  • How to build a process on each shot you can then record

A great session with a deep thinker of the game

Enjoy

09 Sep 2022The State of THE Game and how it affects YOUR game – Andrew Murray #23100:46:29

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by former European Open Champion and supporter of the podcast Andrew Murray to discuss the ‘state of the game’ and what that means for you and YOUR game.

The session was recorded a few weeks ago just after the 150th Open at St Andrews but the content of our conversation is very relevant to your game today.

We talk about Open champion Cameron Smith and his wonderful approach on the greens

The difference between working on HOW to get the ball to the hole as opposed to WHERE you want the ball to go

The absolute heart of the ‘Lost Art of Putting’

How Rory has freed up his short game with the help of Brad Faxon

Tiger Woods and his legacy to the game

What impact has he REALLY had?

How we can truly grow the game of golf

We seem to be at the moment in something of ‘crisis mode’ with the game as we hear so much about the detrimental effect that LIV is having on our game.

But could there be some positives?

Could we look to see how the game and the experience of the game can be improved?

How could YOU get involved in growing the game at the grassroots level?

Stay in the game

What you can do to make sure you KEEP playing golf

As ever with Andrew the conversation was wide ranging and informative.

He now runs Simmons Performance working with top amateur junior and college players as well as aspiring Tour Professionals

He got in touch after qualifying for a USGA event after 48 Years of trying

Achieving a sporting dream at the age of 64

We had a fascinating conversation about his quest as a player and his development as a coach

Especially about how he has applied key Mind Factor principles over an extended period of time

We looked into:

  • Being absolutely clear on what you CAN control
  • How the brain is so averse to uncertainty

For many people this is counter intuitive to what they have been led to believe.

We have spent so long in the futile attempt to try to control our thinking.

Yet as Greg explains today it is actually the RESISTANCE to what we are feeling and thinking that causes so many problems. It is this resistance that causes tension and it is the tension which affects our ability to access the SKILLS we have.

As he says:

‘You can think ANYTHING you want until you think it is WRONG’

It is so important to begin to change the RELATIONSHIP we have with our thoughts and feelings.

To become an observer of them.

As an observer we are able to create some DISTANCE without becoming FUSED with our thinking.

  • We challenge many existing ‘norms’ in mental game coaching
  • Routines could be making you WORSE!
  • The staple of so much mental game coaching could actually be detrimental

Why a rigid pre shot routine will NOT protect you from negative thoughts and emotions and may seriously hamper your CREATIVITY

  • Why it is so important to connect with what you ENJOY about the game of golf
  • The best way of developing your skills and then more importantly how to ACCESS those skills
  • Why trying to supress your emotions can harm your game

  • Why META COGNITION is so important
  • The need to OBSERVE your discomfort as opposed to trying to get comfortable with being uncomfortable
  • Trying less and caring less: Could this be a way out of the mental mire

09 Dec 2022Problem Solving and how it can transform your game – Jamie McConnell #24100:50:50

In the modern world do we all fall into the trap of trying to make things too easy for ourselves?

Instead of searching out ways to solve a problem by using our creative mind we often default to the press of a button and get ‘Dr Google’ do the job.

The issue is we are short circuiting perhaps our most powerful learning weapon, the brain and its innate genius in solving problems.

Give our brain a clear puzzle to solve with some correct concepts and the amazing capacity our brain has will go to work.

We have been slowly but surely getting further and further away from this in the all too easy digital world.

However on today’s show we get the chance to listen to an outstanding young coach in the shape of Jamie McConnell.

Jamie is based in Dubai and is the lead coach for the Saudi national team.

I have done a good bit of work over the years with Jamie and the success he has had is no surprise to me. His enthusiasm for coaching is infectious.

He is a wonderful problem solver and he brings to his own coaching the courage to set his own students some specific problems to solve in their own game so they actually then OWN the improvement themselves.

Getting better at problem solving COULD be a great direction for you to send your game in the next 12 months.

Today We discuss:

  • How Jamie was an early pioneer of the effective use of Trackman in Ireland
  • How he learnt his craft by seeing so many different coaches ACTUALLY teach
  • Why the human brain is a problem solving machine
  • How technology should and shouldn’t be used to solve problems
  • Solving swing problems with shot solutions
  • Problem solving ON the golf course

A great session with a really inspiring coach

How searching for better ‘technique’ with a well known coach took his game completely off track

The development of a really great short game and how this was SHOT lead

Paul is a really deep thinker about the game and has been heavily influenced by the time he has spent with multiple time Mind Caddie guest Kendal McWade

The courage to do things differently

Why you might consider a 10 finger Baseball Grip

Exploring different ways to apply the club to the ball
Hovering the club above the ball and the freedom this creates

  • Understanding the true nature of the game and why it is so important to develop a perspective that allows you to deal with the chaos the game throws at you
  • The need to work with coaches that keep you on track with understanding your tendencies
  • Why trying to copy ‘the greats’ may not be the best strategy

Ryan also discussed how he felt the late, great Shane Warne was actually ‘with him’ walking the fairways of St Andrews on his way to winning the Dunhill Links championship

16 Jun 2023Acceptance and Commitment – A new paradigm for your game – Trevor Jones #26600:54:25

It is great to welcome onto the show mental skills and golf coach Trevor Jones to explore a different way of dealing with the thoughts and sensations that can hold such sway over us.

He has a fascinating story to tell as both a player and a coach at a very high level.

We discussed how many of the existing models of trying to ‘control’ thoughts and just use visualisation techniques proved so ineffective.

How many time have you hit bad shots when you feel GOOD and conversely we have all hit good shots when we are feeling BAD

 The psychological flexibility model

 Acceptance and Commitment Training

Instead of trying to control thoughts and feelings understand how YOU are NOT your thoughts

  • Why it is a myth to think you have to ‘feel good’ to play good
  • The way our brain just ‘pumps’ out thought
  •  Why we should give our brain a name!!
  •  How you can ‘diffuse’ from your thinking
  •  The way out of the matrix
  •  The importance of VALUES based behaviour
  •  How we can move towards what we REALLY value

‘Trevor won the Welsh National Championship in 2008, and played full time professional golf for the next 3 years, yet he struggled when applying traditional sport psychology to himself. After discovering ACT (Acceptance and commitment training) in 2012, Trevor immersed himself in the theory and practice, his research being guided by some of the best in the field. A decade later, Trevor now works for the US based Aware Performance Group, helping college golfers improve their Psychological Flexibility. Trevor also mentors two Sport Psychologists, works privately with up and coming junior golfers, and runs a golf coaching business as a PGA professional. 14 Apr 2023Get out of your own way - Sam Jarman #25801:09:25

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined once more by my good friend Sam Jarman to talk about his new book ‘Getting out of your own way’

It really is a terrific read. It is a challenging book and a very informative book that will really get you thinking in a very different way about your game. More importantly it will challenge some of your existing concepts about how the mind works.

Fundamental to this is the notion that we can actually control what we are thinking at any given moment when in reality, everyone of us if we look to our experience realises that this is a myth. Who knows what we are going to think next?

The beauty of Sam‘s book and his work is to explain this in a way that allows us to be okay with the chaos that the mind throws up at times to be able to deal with it and move on and then more importantly to get down to the real job of thoroughly, enjoying and immersing yourself in the game of golf.

We look at

  • The myths about how your mind actually works
  • The conversation in our heads and what it really means
  • The awareness of your thinking and what we truly are
How to have a different relationship to your thinking
  • You relationship to mistakes and then what you DO next
Understanding the role of awareness in learning
Being clear on who you truly are
Seeing golf as an opportunity to EXPRESS yourself

A really great conversation with a superb coach who is really making a difference to his clients.

The book is called Get Out of Your Own Way. It’s available as an eBook at Amazon, iBooks, Kobo and Smashwords.

03 Feb 2023How we learn to move – The new revolution in the way we practice sports skills – Rob Gray #24800:51:05

How we learn to move – The new revolution in the way we practice sports skills – Rob Gray

How you can TRAIN better to MOVE better.

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by a brilliant guest Rob Gray PhD

He is a professor at Arizona State University who has been conducting research on and teaching courses related to perceptual motor skill learning for over 25 years. He has served as an expert consultant with Nissan Motor Corp, the US Air Force as well as many sports teams and organisations.

In wonderfully insightful conversation we got the chance to discuss:

  • Challenging the idea of an ‘ideal model’ as a way to learn sports skills
  • Why repetition is not all it is made up to be
  • How a Russian physiologist called Nicolai Bernstein changed the way we look at skill development
  • Instead of trying to create one ideal solution understand the value of giving yourself PROBLEMS to solve and then allowing the body to figure it out
  • Why ‘Drills’ are a very poor way of learning skills and even more importantly why drills do not transform to the playing environment
  • The myth of ‘automaticity’ and why humans will never be robots
  • Why it is so important to calibrate to what you have TODAY
  • How VARIABILITY can transform your ability to acquire the skills you desire
  • Exploring solutions to solve problems
  • Why your body is not ‘listening’ when you are telling it what to do
  • How the idea of having a ‘central command’ from brain to body is flawed
  • The likelihood of injury of you keep trying to perform the ‘ideal’ movement
  • What is ‘differential learning’ and how you could employ it to improve
  • Why kids in Brazil tend to become better footballers
  • Creating and designing great learning environments

A really thought provoking session on how we can look at the way we train in a much more efficient way that is grounded in solid scientific research and not just old anecdotes and stories handed down over the years.

03 Nov 2023The FOUR ‘types’ of coaching and what is MOST effective – Fred Shoemaker #28401:08:07

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by the biggest influence in my coaching career Fred Shoemaker.

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: https://mindcaddie.onelink.me/7xjx/znldwgbi

I first went out to Fred’s school in Carmel Valley, California over 25 years ago.

The experience had a deep and lasting impression on me and opened up a whole new world of enquiry and thought about the coaching process.

Fred has continued to influence many coaches and players with his ability to look at the game in a way that really gets you to think about what the game truly MEANS to you

What is your PURPOSE for playing the game?

What is really important to you about the experience?

In today’s show amongst many topics we managed to really drill down into the FOUR types of coaching.

The ‘DO’ instruction. The model for 90% of todays golf coaching whereby a teacher ‘tells’ you what to do in your swing based on his or her belief about how the golf swing SHOULD function

The ‘awareness’ instruction which is much more of a coaching based approach where a coach simply asks you to pay attention to what is ACTUALLY happening in your experience of swinging a club. This leads to a much stronger learning experience.

EXCLUSIVE FOR CERTIFIED MIND COACHES ONLY!!

You have the skills.
Now learn how to apply them.
Take your skills to the next level and become a MASTER MIND FACTOR COACH.
2 days interactive and immersive learning.
21 and 22 January 2024 in Central Manchester

themindfactor.net/masters-course.

Capitalise on the Early Bird rate on offer!!  Limited places.

The BE instruction

This is where the coach helps you explore the PERSON you are when you swing the golf club. Are you going to play as a courageous golfer perhaps? At the heart of this instruction is your own COMMITMENT

The fourth type of instruction is to challenge HOW the world ‘occurs’ to you.

If the golf course occurs to you as a place of threat then no amount of the first two types of instruction will have much effect.

To understand how the world is occurring to you and the CHOICE you have in creating that narrative

This session is not for the faint hearted.

It is challenging

It will really make you consider your approach to the game

It is a wonderful conversation with a very special coach

Make the Winter Count – Adam Young

Don’t waste another winter!!

What are you going to DO for your golf game this winter?

Are you going to make the most of the opportunity or just let the time drift by?

Some old actions lead to the same old results.

The mistake of FORM over FUNCTION

What DO you need to be working on to improve?

What are the BIG THREE?

This is such a VALUABLE insight.

The really critical areas to look at to make lasting progress with your golf skills

How to become aware of YOUR own unique patterns

What have your patterns been through the season?

Being able to develop SHOTS that are functional on the golf course

How to work on your game indoors

Great putting games you can do ANYTIME

10 Mar 2023Why your golf needs to be played from Point A – Susie Meyers #25301:05:22

How images make our body move

Today on the Brain Booster we welcome back a great friend of the show Susie Meyers. Susie is one of the very top coaches in the USA and always brings some wonderful insights.

Today was no exception. We had a great conversation about how to release your very best golf and how the latest neuroscience is pointing us towards the need to play from a quiet place in the mind.

There are SO many GEMS in this conversation that really WILL make a difference to your game.

Why an over attachment to outcomes and results is so counterproductive to freeing us up to play our best golf.

  • The need to find balance both in the body and the mind.
  • Why we are so wound up in our lives and what it is doing to our brain.
  • The need to get back to a child like ‘alpha’ state
  • The quiet and calm place where great golf can emerge
  • Reducing the ‘noise’ on the golf course
  • How closing your eyes can have such a dramatic effect on how much stimulus we receive
  • Why is there so much fear in the game?
  • SO HOW we can play the game with less fear?
  • Playing from Point A
  • This shot in this unique moment.
  • The Magic of the P Words
  1. PLAN
  2. PROCESS
  3. PICTURE
  4. POSITIVE

  • Living with the A Words
  1. AWARE
  2. ACCEPT
  3. ALLOWING
  • Why we need to be aware of how talking about our ‘tendencies’ can get in the way of our progress
  • How you can create powerful images that your body can RESPOND to
  • The difference between ‘Backward Thinking and Forward Thinking’
  • What are the ‘Universal Truths’ about the golf swing?
  • WHO are you going to be on the golf course today?

COMMITTED

CALM

COURAGEOUS

CLEAR

CONFIDENT

Being comes before DOING

What happens to you is not so PERSONAL

Jim has had a BIG input on players who listen to the show and I wanted to get him back to talk at more length about a subject that is unfortunately very relevant to a LOT of golfers the YIPS.

We had another wonderful conversation about how to dig yourself out of the doldrums if you are being affected by the yips in certain parts of the game.

  • We discussed why the yips are becoming more and more prominent these days.
  • Why an overload of technical input can be so damaging to your game
  • How poor chipping concepts are often the cause of the yips to start
  • Why we tend to fall into the trap of extremes
  • Being able to find the ‘middle way’
  • How your unconscious mind is trying to PROTECT you from outcomes
  • Separating your sense of self from golfing outcomes
  • How golf can be a vehicle for psychological transformation
  • Letting go of the sense of ‘I am not good enough’
  • Peer group approval  and why it is hard wired into us
  • The journey of golfing evolution
  • The process of self contemplation

A wonderful conversation with a truly great coach who has made such a difference to golfers and their experience of the game

18 Nov 2022Falling in love with the CHAOS – Claude Harmon III #23801:05:03

How Tiger Woods learned to embrace the CHAOS

It is good to be back with you again on the Brain Booster and today we have a special guest in the company of Claude Harmon.

Claude has coached some of the game’s greatest players including Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepke.

He provides us today with some wonderful insights from both a coaching and playing perspective.

Mind Caddie APP:

A new weekly highlight for training this winter.

Every week Karl provides theory along with practical exercises you can use to improve your game during the off-season

https://apps.apple.com/app/mind-caddie/id1567910600

A great perspective on LEARNING

Claude vividly describes his unique coaching apprenticeship. By his own admission he never played the game to any great level but had perhaps the ultimate coaching environment in which to learn. To be able to watch his father Butch Harmon coach day in and day out must have been something else.

Watching Butch coach the likes of Steve Elkington and Greg Norman in the early days which then led to his association with Tiger Woods and then on to players like Phil Mickelson and Ricky Fowler.

Claude describes how he was actually there when Butch gave the very first lesson to a young Woods.

He provides some real nuggets on how to keep a difficult game simple.

We discuss:

  • Solving the coaching puzzle
  • Looking for the ONE thing that will have the most impact
  • How we can easily become overloaded with technical data
  • Being smart enough to keep it simple
  • Why many coaches invest in making the game DIFFICULT
  • Not falling into the ‘aesthetic trap’
  • The perfect position MYTH
  • When to leave a golf swing alone
  • The difference between ‘technique’ and ‘execution’
  • Learning from the Tiger
  • Tiger Woods incredible honesty about his game
  • His desire to LEARN, how he loved the RANDOM nature of the game.
  • His overall philosophy for the game and how he LOVED the chaos

A great session with a coach at the top of his game.

Claude has a wonderful podcast himself called ‘Son of a Butch’ find it here: https://podfollow.com/1561803455

We got the chance in our time together to look at the power of PERSPECTIVE

How a slight shift in perspective can have a BIG effect on your game

Joe described the humbling experience recently of hosting mindfulness sessions for people actually living in the Ukraine and the way they are manging to handle their lives in the most horrendous of conditions.

  • How much do we take for granted in our own lives?
  • In what way does this cross over to our golf?
  • The dramatic impact of self talk
  • Changing the definition of a ‘good shot’
  • Why the perception of what makes a ‘good day’ can make us so unhappy
  • What perspective do we have on poor shots?
  • How do we view the opportunity to play?
  • What about the golf course itself?

Do we view the course as an invitation to experience the possibility of expressing our skills or do we see the course as being something of a ‘war zone’ where are own sense of self is brought into question?

  • How does the golf course want to RECEIVE your shots?
  • The ‘don’t know’ mindset
  • Be CURIOIUS instead of afraid
  • The Zen of better putting
  • How you can make EVERY putt
  • Why it is so important to ‘begin with the end in mind’
  • The ultimate ATTITUDE to bring to your putting

Today we welcome onto the show one of the best young coaches in the US. Dr Luke Benoit

Luke is a great student of the game and brings to the conversation some wonderful research around effective learning environments.

Research that challenges SOME of the existing theories around attentional focus

  •  If you did want to change your swing what is the best way to go about it?
  •  The ladder of improvement
  •  Just how much does our environment affect our development?
  •  How to shift your mind set from a training to a PLAYING attitude
  •  Training for DISTANCE
  •  The Rypstick and how you COULD hit the ball so much further
  •  Creating a training environment to TEST your skills
  •  Creating a very effective MENTAL SCORECARD

Dr. Luke Benoit Ph.D. is a PGA golf coach with a diverse background of experience and skills. 30 Jun 2023Where is your experience ACTUALLY coming from? – Andy Morrison #26801:03:58

 Who are we really?

 What is our TRUE nature?

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by Performance Coach Andy Morrison who works with a host of professional players on numerous tours sharing with them the ‘Inside Out’ understanding of experience.

Andy was heavily influenced in his coaching by some of our previous guests on the podcast such as Garret Kramer, Dicken Bettinger and Sam Jarman who have all built on the work of Sydney Banks exploring the ideas of the Three Principles

A lot of what Andy says may well challenge a lot of our existing beliefs especially about our constant need to try to FIX our thinking or to try to get into a perfect mental state to play golf

  • Why trying to ‘fix’ the mind often just stirs it up more
  • Knowing WHERE your experience actually comes from
  • How to get back to the TASK at hand

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: https://mindcaddie.onelink.me/7xjx/znldwgbi

Already at a relatively young age Liam has coached numerous winners on tour such as Matt Wallace and Vincent Norrman. He also coached tour legend Lee Westwood for over two years.

We had chance to discuss his evolution and development as a coach working with great mentors such as Mac O’Grady, Robert Rock and Matt Belsham.

From an early age he has been fascinated by the art and science of both playing and coaching.

Often in his early days he would be playing tournaments with other young pros who he was actually coaching and we go into a great story how he transformed the fortunes of one young player during a 36 hole tournament they played together.

With his association with Robert Rock he gained an opportunity to coach top players and has never looked back since.

We discuss life on tour and both the opportunity and challenges of working at the highest level.

The conversation though doesn’t just apply to good players.

Whatever your standard of play you will gain something from this podcast.

20 Oct 2023Am I going to improve? – It DEPENDS – Michael Hebron #28200:58:28

Today on the brain booster we are joined by coaching legend Michael Hebron.

Michael has just written a wonderful book with Stephen Yazulla titled ‘It Depends’

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: https://urlgeni.us/mindcaddie

The book is all about learning and what is required to get the best out of your lessons or your training.

It is an amazing piece of work with some great insights, many of which are counterintuitive.

It also reinforces what we have said on the Brain Booster many times about the need to honour your individuality.

The book is called:

‘It Depends’

As we discussed during our time together:

  • The need for ‘unintended outcomes’
  • The brain doesn’t learn without reference points
  • Swing too fast, swing too slow so you can FIND what is the ideal timing
  • Why you need to understand the rules of the CLUB
  • The need to understand RHYTHM and TIMING
  • The rhythm of ONE
  • Understand how the swinging of the club creates motion not the other way around
  • Take away the word better. The brain doesn’t learn from better, it learns much more from DIFFERENT
  • The need to be OBJECTIVE about outcomes as opposed to emotional evaluation
  • The need to be able to ADJUST to what is going on
  • The difference between TEACHING environments and LEARNING environments
  • The swing model is the GOLF COURSE

A truly wonderful conversation with one of the most influential coaches of the past 100 years.

A man who has dedicated his life to helping students and coaches alike how to LEARN better

07 Apr 2023The Mental Health of Golfers – Dr Izzy Justice #25700:50:14

The silent epidemic why we should be concerned

Today on the Brain Booster we welcome back my good friend Dr Izzy Justice to discuss golf and mental health.

You wouldn’t ordinarily connect the two subjects together but as we discuss in today’s show there is currently an epidemic of mental health issues especially amongst young players.

So many people have a brain that is totally overstimulated.

The baseline EEG is way too high.

Then we come to try to play a game like golf where we are REQUIRED to have low brain wave frequency in order to perform.

We are consuming so much information and stumuli as a result of the amount of time we spend on our devices.

  • Social media is saturating our brain with mostly useless stimuli
  • What can we do about this problem?
  • Is there a way out of the woods to better mental health and also better golf?
  • Izzy has some wonderful suggestions:
  • What does a GOOD day look like for our brain?
  • The importance of a NEURO DIET
  • Doing more things that help quieten your brain
  • Simple DAILY strategies to help you reduce all of the NOISE
  • Doing more of what you LIKE and less of what you don’t
  • The importance of SLEEP
  • The chronic problem of sleep deprivation
  • Why our current baseline is contributing to sleep issues
  • Why sleep gadgets can only do so much
  • The GREAT SLEEP hack the FOUR, ONE, ONE
  • How to get closure on the day
  • This is a nugget of GOLD
  • The key message of the podcast is to get your BASELINE down BEFORE you play golf
  • The role of GRATITUDE in lowering brain frequency

A really great thought provoking session

24 Mar 2023How to FLUSH it like Moe Norman – Martin Chuck #25501:11:30

Today on the show we have a very special guest in the shape of Martin Chuck one of the VERY best and most highly regarded golf coaches in the world.

If you want to take a lesson with him he is booked up literally months in advance

Martin has an incredible story of how he developed both as a player and then to become a top coach. He spent a LOT of time with two absolute legends of the game Moe Norman and George Knudson.

Martin shared those early experiences of spending time watching Moe practice and listening to his philosophy of how to play the game.

  • Listening to the awesome quality of his ball striking.
  • The way he just flushed shot after shot dead out of the middle of the club.
  • Can you imagine how rich an experience that must have been?
  • Spending time watching George Knudson teach.
  • Soaking up the way he helped students and developed their game.
  • The value of spending time with truly great people.
  •  From a coaching philosophy Martin has some wonderfully simple and effective concepts.
  • Most of them designed to help you hit the ball more often flush out of the middle of the club

As he says, ‘Isn’t that what most golfers REALLY get a buzz from?’

  • Hitting the ball FLUSH out of the centre of the clubface.
  •  He shares with us one AMAZING drill that will literally make you so much more aware of what is ACTUALLY going on in your swing
  •  As Martin says he ‘can’t be embarrassed’
  • What a wonderful quality but as we discuss it is very much about changing your relationship with outcomes so the game doesn’t hurt you so much
  •  How you can WIN on EVERY shot

Golf is right here and right NOW!! To hell with everything else

A fantastic session full of great wisdom from someone who has developed a wonderful PRACTICAL coaching philosophy

Martin Chuck

Martin has a knack to be able to communicate to the masses. While he has coached some of the best players in the World, he prefers to work with the average, developing golfer. The "puzzle" of providing the right information at the right time is a thrill for Martin... The homebase for his wildly popular golf school is at The Raven in Phoenix, Arizona and during the Summer months he takes his show on the round to escape a little of the Phoenix heat.

And what a session it was.

The conversation just flowed as it tends to do with Jim and we explored even deeper levels of the Mind Body connection.

You will find some really valuable insights in this show

We had the chance to discuss:

  •  The Mind – Body connection and how to ACTUALLY change your swing
  •  Honouring the goal of making movement without conscious thought

  •  The 3 Primary sensory channels and how you need to know YOUR preference
  •  The myth of ‘swing thoughts’ and why they ‘seem’ to work

  •  The need for BALANCE awareness

So many nuggets of pure gold from a legendary coach

Jim Waldron is a nationally acclaimed golf teaching professional, mental game coach, author, and lecturer best known for his pioneering research on the mind/body connection approach to learning and teaching golf. 12 May 2023Finding your AUTHENTIC golf swing  - Marcus Bell – GRF Golf #26201:18:38

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by Marcus Bell from GRF Golf formerly Zen Golf

I have known Marcus for many years and we have done a number of seminars together.

It has been wonderful to recently see how much his coaching career has taken off as a result of his You Tube channel where he shares the content of his actual lessons as opposed to just giving out ‘technique tips’

It is a real ‘fly on the wall’ experience watching a top coach in action

Marcus and his coaching is very different from so much of the information out there at the moment.

He helps people tap into their own natural way of moving

Exploring possibility

We had had the chance to discuss:

  • Why golfers have lost their true IDENTITY
  • The endless search for information creates so much noise in the system
  • Why being dependent on other people and their opinions can be so detrimental
  • How you can learn to connect back to more of your AUTHENTIC golfing self
  • Why movement doesn’t need language
  • How we can stop interfering with the system and learn how to REACT better
  • Pushing your boundaries and exploring movement in space
  • How you can explore draws and fades
  • Creating an environment of discovery

This session will really encourage you to explore YOUR movements and what your body can ACTUALLY do as opposed to what you have been told to do

Raymond and I collaborated on what we believe to be a ground breaking project called ‘Building Stable Confidence’

It is a program that has had wonderful reviews and could be a wonderful assistance this year to help you get the best from your game.

During the webinar we discussed the key concept of

‘Separating SELF from CRAFT’

How can we develop the capability to create some space between our capability as a golfer and our self image as a human being

How being ‘concerned’ about our value as a human is tied to our evolutionary development

The early messages we receive as youngsters from important people around us and how this can weave into our identity

  • The need to develop a ‘SAFE PLACE’ to play from
  • How our performance can become a THREAT to our identity
  • How this leads to unstable confidence
  • Why your relationship to the game can become so toxic

The necessity to ask yourself the question ‘Why do I play golf?’ Not to take your initial answer but to look deeper to what is REALLY important to you

  • What are your INTRINSIC and SELF DIRECTED values to play the game?
  • Challenging your core BELIEFS to see if they REALLY work for you
  • The fragility of EXTRINSIC values and why you can never ‘get enough’
  • The need to JOURNAL your experiences and why that is so important
  • What am I committed to TODAY?
  • Think about WHY you play golf WHEN you play golf
  • Being INTENTIONAL and on purpose

This is a wonderful session with Raymond and Karl as they go into some real detail as to how to get the very best from your game

22 Jul 2022Coaching and Caddying for a PGA Tour winner – Randy Joyner #22400:56:28

Today we welcome back onto the Brain Booster our really good friend and colleague from the USA, Randy Joyner.

Randy has been establishing himself over the past few years as one of the very best coaches in the States.

He has had outstanding results at ALL levels applying many of the ‘Lost Art of Golf’ principles. One of his long time students is Derek Ernst who has been a winner on the PGA Tour.

We got the chance to discuss with Randy how he works with Derek and in particular what he learned from a recent experience where he caddied for Derek in the John Deere Classic.

There are some absolute gems of information within this conversation.

On this particular week Derek was struggling to make the cut and Randy describes just how they manged to get the job done and play at the weekend.

We often hear about winners on Tour but the real pressure for many players is to get over the cut line and have employment for the weekend

We get totally inside the ropes here with the player/caddie relationship

We discussed :

How a top player would prepare for a PGA Tour event

The pitfalls of doing the WRONG type of practice

Falling into the ‘seriousness’ trap

How you need to ‘live life’ outside the confines of the four rounds

The importance of the ‘in between’ time. The 90% of golf that is NOT golf

Trying to make the cut, feeling uncomfortable but getting the job done anyway

23 Jun 2023The Lost Art of Great Experiences – Gary Nicol #26700:55:26

It is wonderful to welcome back onto the Brain Booster my very good friend Gary Nicol, co-author of the best-selling ‘Lost Art of Golf’ series.

We had as usual a wonderful conversation particularly about our Lost Art schools at Archerfield

We discussed the concept of our RELATIONSHIP to the game of golf

What do we really want from the game?

How we can become a little more SELF LESS and a less SELFISH

Why becoming a great playing partner may actually unlock your own performance.

Why the outcome of a golf shot should never determine your self worth

 The biggest myths around consistency

How the Trackman numbers tell us what does and doesn’t change much in a swing

What we should be aiming to influence and WHERE we need to place our ATTENTION

We have lots of what I call ‘surface conversations’ about golf such as how can I hit it further, score lower, get handicaps down but what about going to a bit deeper level and finding out what REALLY matters to you when you play.

How can you get the very most out of this fleeting opportunity called LIFE

Is that a conversation REALLY worth having ?

We discussed in great detail perhaps the most overlooked opportunity to improve your game.

The 90% of golf that isn’t golf!!

We spend so much of our golfing time NOT playing golf and yet how many golfers really look into what is happening during this time and HOW they can maximise their experience?

I have long contended that the quality of what you do in the 90% will have a DIRECT influence on what you do when it comes to play your shots.

We discussed:

  • The value of being EXTERNAL in between shots
  • Making a conscious decision to connect with the beauty of the golf course
  • Connecting and coming to your SENSES
  • The connection with the ‘Power of NOW’
  • Losing your absorption in your own SELF
  • Connecting with other people and how this can cross over into your life
  • Your behaviour in between shots and how this becomes totally unconscious
  • The pace of you walk and the ‘Mind Body’ connection
  • The danger of focusing too much on OUTCOMES

How tuning into your external world helps you LISTEN to the golf course. Being attuned to your ENVIRONMENT and then being able to RESPOND to that environment

  • The value of good conversation and being WIDE with your focus
  • The feeling of ‘lightness’ and how that can help you get into the shot
  • Moe Norman and ‘positive indifference’
  • Random reinforcement syndrome – what is it and why do we fall into its trap

It is such a pleasure to speak to Jim

He has such a wonderful INTENTION to help golfers

You can only benefit from is wonderful wisdom.

29 Mar 2024How Being Mindless affects EVERYTHING we do – Dr Ellen Langer #30301:02:41

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by an extraordinarily special guest Dr Ellen Langer

Dr Langer has been one of the most influential people in the world of psychology over the past 40 years

She was the first female tenured professor in psychology at Harvard

Has written numerous books

She has conducted so many incredible experiments, most notably the ‘counterclockwise’ experiment where she had older men go into a ‘pod’ that took them back to their younger selves.

The results as we find out today were extraordinary

She has been studying Mindfulness for the past 35 years and makes clear that mindfulness is NOT meditation

Mindfulness is being aware of what is ACTUALLY happening as opposed to what we think is happening based on our auto pilot responses

  • Why we need to realise that we DON’T know
  • How our assumptions keep constantly tricking us
  • How research only gives us PROBABILITIES not absolutes
  • The ‘counterclockwise’ study and the amazing possibilities that open up
  • Is ageing a direct consequence of our beliefs surrounding what we believe SHOULD be happening?
  • Can we think ourselves WELL?
  • Can we think ourselves SICK?
  • What living a mindful life looks like

12 Jul 2024The Art of ENOUGH – Becky Hall - The Mind Caddie - See the game DIFFERENTLY #31600:52:30

Today on the podcast we are joined by author and executive coach Becky Hall who has written a wonderful book called ‘The Art of Enough’

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: https://mindcaddie.onelink.me/7xjx/znldwgbi

During a very wide ranging conversation we to a deep dive into the concept of ENOUGH

What is enough?

In a world where we it is constantly being reinforced that we are not enough and we need more of just about everything it was so refreshing to chat with Becky and to look through a different lens.

Are you going to take ACTION and become a Certified Mind Factor coach?

  • We are often overloaded with demands on time
  • How can we get better at focusing our attention on the RIGHT things?
  • The current epidemic of burnout
  • Self doubt and how even the very best can experience this on a regular basis
  • What is REALLY driving the feeling of not being ‘good enough’?
  • Coming from a position of SCARCITY and LACK
  • Needing external validation for what we do
  • Quietening the inner critic and allowing yourself to seek excellence
  • Following a path that really matters to you
  • Mastering and exploring your craft
  • Why ‘Enough’ isn’t just sitting back and doing nothing
  • The need to REST and RESTORE

How to avoid the trap of ‘working harder’ in terms of your training as opposed to training efficiently

Within the theme we have of looking at the game differently Becky provides a refreshingly alternative perspective.

Nothing in the conversation suggests we shouldn’t aim to maximise our skills but it does mean coming at it from a position of ‘enough’ as opposed to a position of lack.

Becky Hall is an experienced EMCC executive coach, leadership consultant and facilitator. She has worked one to one with senior leaders and executive teams across all sectors for over twenty years.

We had a wonderful conversation about his life and evolution as a performance coach.

Tim has a fascinating background as a writer, golfer and now coach.

He wrote a wonderful book about the great Moe Norman called ‘The Feeling of Greatness’

We talked about the time Tim spent with Moe, playing golf and a fascinating insight to Moe’s connection to the target when he played.

Why and how Moe was so misunderstood

Onto Tim’s coaching career

Tim’s observation of the rampant narcissism in the golfing world today and how we can all become lost in the story of ‘I will be happy WHEN’

How we are constantly being fed the story that we are ‘BROKEN’

How we could access our own innate talent

How our Ego can hijack the coaching process

What Tim learned about coaching from Lou Reed

Tim O’Connor is a golf coach, award-winning writer, and podcaster living in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

28 Apr 2023How to develop STABLE confidence – Dr Raymond Prior #26001:08:22

How to develop STABLE confidence – Dr Raymond Prior

  • Why is your confidence so unstable?
  • Why do you have it TODAY and it is gone TOMORROW?
  • What would it be like to have a STABLE confidence that doesn’t come and go?

Today we welcome back onto the podcast one of the most popular guests over the past 12 months Dr Raymond Prior. Raymond is one of the most sought after mental performance coaches in the USA and he has recently published a wonderful new book called ‘Golf – Beneath the Surface’ which is a tremendous in depth study of what is REALLY happening in our brain when we are attempting to perform our best in sport.

As the title says it is not about the ‘surface level’ techniques often dished out to players but a study into what has been found by science to be truly beneficial in helping someone deal with the challenges of the game.

So much of what we have been taught about mental coaching turns out to be nothing more that myths and misconceptions.

In our conversation today we drill down and look at a number of those myths to get to the heart of what will REALLY make a difference.

 We look into:

  • The true nature of STABLE confidence. What it is and why it is so important to have it
  •  Why we suffer so much with insecurity in our game
  •  Unstable confidence: Why so many of us are looking for confidence in all the wrong places
  •  Why ACCEPTANCE is such a critical skill to understand
  •  What acceptance definitely is NOT
  •  How the yips ACTUALLY manifest in our mind and why just working on technique will NEVER solve the problem

Raymond’s new book is called:

Golf beneath the surface’ and is available on Amazon

06 Oct 2023How to better deal with the CHAOS of Golf – Jon Sherman #28101:03:42

Today on the show we are joined by Jon Sherman the author of the brilliant best selling book ‘The Four Foundations of Golf’, host of the ‘Sweet Spot’ podcast and the host of ‘Practical Golf’ website.

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: https://urlgeni.us/mindcaddie

Jon is a top amateur player in his own right and recently achieved a lifetime golfing ambition by qualifying for the US Mid Am

We opened up our conversation with some fascinating insights about his experience in qualifying and all of the challenges he encountered by stepping out of his comfort zone and competing at a much higher level.

How Jon has learned to have a different relationship with the game and his ability to deal better with the inevitable chaos golf often throws at us

It is this relationship to unpredictable outcomes which for me is the heart of an effective mental game strategy

We had a really wide ranging conversation covering multiple topics such as:

  • Self learning and what it actually looks and feels like
  • How to develop more clubface awareness
  • Why giving yourself permission to fail in practice is so important
  • Expectation management and why it has such a big impact on your mental game
  • Matching skill level with practical expectation
  • The ability to reframe outcomes to stay more level mentally
  • The TWO THIRDS rule and how it can change your perception of the game
  • How to genuinely enjoy the game more

A really great conversation with a deep thinker about the game and someone who is having a BIG impact on how people golfers approach getting better at the game.

02 Feb 2024The Path to Mastery – Karl Morris #29500:23:29

Are you going to join us on YOUR path to Mastery?

The Lost Art of Golf 2 day school at Archerfield Links with Karl Morris and Gary Nicol

The ULTIMATE interactive learning experience at the ULTIMATE location

Today a slightly different show with a solo effort from myself. I have had a few people ask me recently to clarify some of the key ideas from the Mind factor trainings so here we go.

What path are you ACTUALLY on?

Could you embark on a ‘path to mastery’ as opposed to being on a path of fear, anxiety and avoidance?

Become a Mind Factor Coach - Early Bird Offer

2024 Mind Factor Certification Course

  • What game are you ACTUALLY playing?
  • How is the game of golf occurring for you?
  • Are you allowing golf to be a judgement on your VALUE as a person?
  • Does the golf course appear as a threat or an opportunity?
  • How can you change your ‘story’? A story that is holding you back
  • What do you want to really experience with your game?
  • Understanding what TRUE GRATITUDE actually is
  • Why gratitude is a PERFORMANCE state

In this short session we explore some really important territory and ask some question that are not ordinarily asked of golfers.

Yet if we don’t ask these questions we will NEVER get to the real source of performance and perhaps more importantly what is holding that performance back.

05 Aug 2022How to create an EFFICIENT golf swing – Kelvin Kelley #22600:36:19

Welcome back to the Brain Booster for another week.

Thank you for supporting the show, it really is appreciated.

From time to time people question me about my seemingly indifferent approach to ‘working’ on the golf swing. And that all I want people to do is ‘just play’

This couldn’t be further from the truth as I have always believed that the key to great golf is a blend of swing efficiency coupled with a great mindset.

I do not believe in endlessly dissecting your swing and obsessing over positions but I do believe in having a good understanding of what creates your SHOTS.

It was with that in mind I wanted to welcome back a great coach from the USA and a big supporter of the podcast Kelvin Kelley to discuss how best to make your swing more efficient.

We discuss:

How the set up is the very best place to start making your swing more efficient.

Why you can set up in a way to help you create a powerful impact position

Feeling a dynamic impact position with an impact bag

Hitting angles at address

How to turn the switch to performance on the golf course

Becoming a ‘shot detective’ out on the golf course

Letting the shot create the swing

How your physiology affects your performance

How your lifestyle dramatically affects your performance

Some really solid and interesting concepts from a top coach

Kelvin is a Class A PGA golf professional in San Francisco, California. He has taught at some of the top golf clubs in the Bay Area, which include The Olympic Club and Sonoma Golf Club. Kelvin was recently voted a “Top Instructor To Watch” by golf.com and has written several articles for golf.com and GolfWRX.

Kelvin works with his students to develop an efficient golf swing. He welcomes golfers of all skill levels however is geared towards the more committed golfer. Besides swing and short game instruction, Kelvin is an expert in on and off the course coaching. This includes mental preparation, developing practice routines and course strategizing.

17 Mar 2023What you can learn from your BIGGEST mistakes – Nick Bradley #25400:50:37

Today on the show we are joined by top coach Nick Bradley to discuss a fascinating topic. MISTAKES and more importantly your relationship to those mistakes.

Nick sets the scene with a great story about challenging some of the best coaches in the world at the PGA show in Orlando about what they COULD have learned from their biggest mistakes.

  • The question was largely ignored.
  • An opportunity for everyone to learn was missed.
  •  Why do we have such a poor relationship to our mistakes and more importantly what can we do about it?
  •  How we stigmatise mistakes and the consequence of this limits our learning
  •  How mistakes are so essential in our evolution as a player
  •  Why we need to look at the journey of a player as opposed to just looking at perfect ‘swing positions’
  •  Nick also gives us some great insights into working with top players
  •  How a great relationship CAN turn sour and go in the wrong direction
  •  The need for CLARTY on the financial side
  •  How to keep challenging players effectively
  •  How to become a better STUDENT
  •  Why Butch Harmon is such a great coach
  •  Why ‘method coaching’ can be an ego trip and intellectual snobbery
  •  On the business side why it is important to consider ‘staying in your lane’

Nick Bradley is best known for his work with English golfer Justin Rose from 2006 to 2009, who he coached from rank 125 in the world all the way to 5th. Rose went on to win the European Order of Merit in 2007, the 2008 Ryder Cup, and his first and only US Open major championship.

Over twenty-five years, Nick has trained over 400 professional golfers, including Sir Nick Faldo, Captain Paul McGinley, and Seamus Power.

He’s coached his clients to multiple PGA Tour wins, a top-three placement at the US Open, eight amateur titles, two junior national titles, a world #1 rank, a European #1 rank, and two World #5 placements.

A coach and his journey to excellence

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by top coach Anthony McCarthy the author of a wonderful book called ‘The Golf Coach’ which is all about the business of golf coaching and the multi dimensional approach a great modern day coach must embrace to be the very best version of themselves.

Find out more about The Mind Caddie App here: https://apps.apple.com/app/mind-caddie/id1567910600

We had a great conversation about the influences that have driven Anthony especially the legendary footballer Johan Cruyyf the pioneer of TOTAL football

The mystique of how he coached

One of his quotes:

There is no higher praise than being acclaimed for your style

  • It is not ONLY about the result but the WAY the result is achieved
  • Understanding how important it is to EXPRESS your capabilities
  • The variability of outcomes and why we shouldn’t attach everything to them
  • What the vast majority of golfers REALLY want to achieve
  • Why it is SO important to really understand a player’s UNIQUE desire
  • Why we should hold back our ASSUMPTIONS
  • How your coaching philosophy should EVOLVE
  • Beginning with the SHOT and working from there
  • Becoming obsessed with the BALL FLIGHT
  • When to dive into technique and when NOT
  • Is your intervention actually improving IMPACT?
  • John Jacobs ‘Golf is what the BALL does’
  • Spending more time observing players ON the COURSE
  • Why you shouldn’t have to ‘get worse to get better”

A great session with an extremely knowledgeable coach who has immersed himself in the development of his craft

05 May 2023Knowing who you TRULY are on the golf course – Garret Kramer #26101:09:59

Knowing who you TRULY are on the golf course – Garret Kramer

How you can learn to fully EXPRESS yourself

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by coach Garret Kramer

We had a fascinating discussion around identity and who we truly are

How we often get drawn down blind alleys as a result of our attachment to a separate self or ego

Garret provided a refreshing if alternative view of what it is to be a golfer in the modern world and how we often FORGET our true identity

We discussed:

  • The myths and misconceptions around the ‘mental game’
  • Why a lot of psychology can be doomed to fail
  • How we can actually play with a CLEAR HEAD
  • Why trying to FIX your thinking can just create more problems than it solves
  • How the desire to EXPRESS yourself can actually be grounded in a stable place in your mind
  •

Garret has a different way of looking at performance and the seeking of fulfilment

I am sure you will find his ideas challenge a lot of your current beliefs but you will nevertheless find them fascinating

Garret Kramer is the founder of Inner Sports. For over 25 years, he has provided consulting services for athletes, coaches, actors, and business leaders. And he has conducted workshops, day-long symposiums, and retreats for teams, organizations, universities, and schools. Today we have a wonderful conversation with Jay Carter who is the National Coach of the New Zealand golf team.

Why does New Zealand punch above its weight in terms of producing great sports men and women?

The influence of the ALL BLACKS

It was a very open conversation about his own struggles as a player and some of the deep thinking he has done about what actually makes a difference to players who want to make the very best out of their development

Why context is so important and how the brain responds differently depending on the environment you are in

  • The limitations of data taken out of context
  • The need for curiosity and exploration
  • Why your IDENTITY as a golfer is so important and will influence everything you do
  • Being clear WHO you are
  • What have been your influences?
  • What about your ancestry?
  • Your culture?
  • Can you see golf as an opportunity to explore?
  • Can you be creative with what you do in your TRAINING?
  • Could you get out onto the golf course with more purpose and engagement?
  • Why do people make such good progress in Martial Arts and yet often stay the same in golf?
  • Separating SKILL from technique
  • Ryan Fox and the influence of the conversations around the All Blacks

A really interesting conversation with a top coach who is passionately involved in trying to help golfers get better.

25 Aug 2023Can we make the golf swing REALLY simple? – Kiran Kanwar #27500:42:55

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by iconic teacher from the USA Kiran Kanwar who has a VERY different view of how we COULD swing the golf club.

It is a view that has at its very heart SIMPLICITY and efficiency of movement with an emphasis on injury prevention.

What Kiran has to say may well be different and oppose what you currently believe about the golf swing but surely it is important to QUESTION what we believe and ask ‘Could there be a different way to do this?’

Kiran has been studying movement and how the body works for over 30 years and has produced numerous studies

  • During our discussion we looked into what Kiran calls the Minimalist Golf Swing
  • How so much of the golf swing is dictated by your address position
  • The futility of thinking about body parts on the downswing
  • The role of arm swing and movement
  • How the downswing should happen automatically
  • What ACTUALLY happens with ground reaction forces
  • Why simplicity frees us up to just PLAY golf
  • A swing to help reduce injury

A thought provoking and challenging session. You may agree with some of what Kiran says or disagree with all of it but at least it will get you to think and challenge your model of the world

07 Oct 2022Equanimity – What is it?  And why is it SO important for your game – Jon Adler #23400:57:00

Equanimity – What is it?

And why is it SO important for your game – Jon Adler

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster with Performance Coach Jon Adler who has worked at all levels of the game from club players to European Tour winners.

Jon is also an accomplished golfer himself and he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our show today.

More importantly he brings a wonderful disarming honestly to our exchange in terms of what CAN and CAN”T be achieved working on the mental aspects of the game.

His own story is extraordinary in particular how he had a game changing experience on a TEN day SILENT MEDITATION retreat

His journey began in 2001 as a coach to business owners and professionals. When he stopped playing football and started to play more golf.

Jon was heavily influenced by Timothy Gallwey’s book The Inner Game of Golf.

So I wondered if I could combine what I had learned in coaching business people with this new understanding of the Inner Game of Golf.  I began to coach a friend at my local golf club. I am not a swing coach. My interest is in how we can develop the mind for better performance.

He also spent time with the late golf psychologist  Jos Vanstiphout on the European Tour.

As Jon says:

“The understanding of your mind is available to anybody. You do not need to be a certain standard of golfer to understand your mind, play better golf and improve your focus and concentration. The same universal principles apply to us all.”

In today’s show we discuss:

The principles of equanimity

Being able to accept golf and life as it IS not as we would want it to be

Beginners mind – How to look through a very clear lens

True principles of acceptance – what it is and more importantly what it isn’t

Craving and aversion

Wanting a result too much or being fearful of an outcome

The experience of the YIPS – what is actually going on

The pathway to a yips recovery

03 Mar 2023Technology – Is it a FRIEND or a FOE to your game? – Mike Malone #25200:44:22

On today’s show we have with us a good friend of the Brain Booster in the shape of Mike Malone from Trackman to discuss technology in general and how it can potentially be either a FRIEND or a FOE to your game.

Over the past 10 to 15 years launch monitors such as Trackman have become a staple part of the coaching diet.

Most people who go for lessons now expect they will be assisted by a coach using a launch monitor but what are the potential pitfalls to what can be an overwhelming array of information?

In the early days many people fell into the trap of drowning in the numbers. Thinking that more information would be better for their game.

Yet as Mike explains, the really great coaches had an instinctive ability to limit the numbers to just a few key performance indicators.

We had a really great conversation about the very best ways of using technology and how there are many myths and misconceptions of what actually DOES change in your swing from shot to shot.

  • What is CONSISTENT in your swing?
  • There may be some surprises here
  •  How you can improve the BIG THREE
  • Ground contact
  • Strike Location
  • Face Orientation
  •  Creating more effective CONSEQUENCE in your practice
  •  How you can use technology to tune much more into the SHOTS you are trying to play
  •  Using technology as an individual
  • Many people now have some form of launch monitor for their own game
  • How can you best use the technology in your own practice
  •  Why you should STOP trying to dissect every poor shot
  •  How you can actually manage your poor shots better

How using indoor simulators to play on golf courses can be so beneficial to your training

Why it is important to feel what you are doing with a shot THEN use technology to back up your estimate as opposed to just relying on the monitor to supply all of the information

What could the future of technology be from a golf perspective?

How entertainment technology is helping more golfers get into the game

A fantastic conversation about how YOU can get the very best out of technology without getting lost in all of the information

26 Jul 2024COMMITMENT - Could this be the SECRET to holing PUTTS? – Dr Laura Carey and Caesar Bayliss #31801:04:27

Are you going to take ACTION and become a Certified Mind Factor coach?

Laura has conducted some amazing research around putting over the past number of years in particular around gaze control and also brain activity prior to actually hitting the putt.

What she has uncovered has the potential to transform the way putting is both learned and performed.

The conversation will REALLY get you thinking about the way you approach your game on the greens.

In our time together we looked at:

  • The difference in brain activity just before the stroke is made between successful and unsuccessful putters.
  • Why doubt over the ball is so detrimental to performance
  • How this increases brain activity which then compromises your stroke
  • Why a line on the ball may not be the most effective strategy
  • Why practicing with putting aids and gadgets can be of limited value
  • The role of the eyes in supplying information for your putt
  • The value of ‘quiet eye’
  • Busy eyes make for a bust brain
  • How to train to then perform
  • Why you shouldn’t just keep hitting putt after putt when you are training

This is a really refreshing and far reaching conversation that could potentially apply to the whole of your game

A lot of what Laura and Caesar had to say resonated with many of the ideas presented by Gary Nicol and myself in the Lost Art of Putting

Caesar Bayliss has been a PGA professional for over 20 years and specializes in putting. He coaches at The Wisley and other venues across the UK  Dr Laura Carey is a Lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland and a HCPC-registered Practitioner Psychologist. She has worked as an applied sport psychologist for over 15 years, offering support to a range of athletes, coaches and teams. Laura’s PhD was in golf putting, titled "Investigating Perceptual-Cognitive Expertise, Visual Gaze, and Neural Activity in Golf Putting".

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by world renowned coach Andrew Rice who amongst many other achievements created the ‘Wedge Project’

The passion for coaching resonates in every word that Andrew speaks

He has developed into a highly sought after coach as a result of a rich background in his coaching development.

He worked for a number of years with David Leadbetter

Why ‘themes’ and ‘concepts’ are the driving force behind genuine improvement.

We looked in particular at Andrew’s great passion:

Wedge play

The ‘Cone of Contention’ becoming REALLY good from 20yds to 100yds

How Andrews ideas emerged as a result of extensive research using actual numbers from Trackman not just anecdotal theory.

Building your wedge TEMPLATE

Should you hit draws or fades with your wedges?

Establishing your pitching ‘zones’ with each of your wedges

The importance of CLEAN clubs

He shared some absolute nuggets of gold about how to go about developing this vital area of your game.

14 Jun 2024The Magic of Journaling – Kent Osborne #31300:57:09

Here is a great quote from his website

"You see … before I  became a golfer I was a pioneer in the executive coaching field, My experience working with professional athletes and corporate leaders revealed this truth: Feelings precede thoughts. Or, to put it differently, you can’t think positive when you feel negative."

Kent is a good golfer in his own right and he charts his own personal experiences of the game with a big following of players.

The first time we spoke it was clear that Kent and I shared many similar trains of thought.

In particular the importance of JOURNALING

We had a truly memorable conversation discussing the numerous benefits of being a regular journal taker.

It is something we have spoken about on this show and promoted heavily in the Mind Caddie app

We discussed

  • The difference between THINKING about gratitude and actually FEELING it
  • The ability to be playful when you are hitting your shots
  • Why journaling can help us to balance out the overload of information that is coming at us in the modern world
  • Why evolution got us to focus on the negative and our mistakes
  • How our thinking patterns become so habitual and how journaling can help shift this
  • Why BALANCE is so important from an evolutionary perspective
  • Why journaling can help us to still get something out of a bad outcome day on the course
  • The ability to develop spontaneous acceptance and to be able to be NEUTRAL to the variety of outcomes.
  • The importance of acknowledging the GOOD shots and the good experiences
  • If this was your LAST round of golf how would you want to experience it?

So much of what Kent says is based in real world experience and makes for that most elusive of qualities common sense. When you listen to him you realise just how precious this NEXT opportunity is to play the game.

Take the plunge and embark on a year of journaling and just see what it can do for your game.

19 Jul 2024Socrates would have been some golfer! – Nick Bradley #31700:55:54

One of the secrets really stood out to me

Socratic questioning and how being prepared to ‘go into’ the problem you have with your game could actually help find a solution

What would you ‘need’ to do to slice the ball?

Can you actually experience what you would need to do to deliberately create the ‘mistake’?

This area of enquiry was just one of the fascinating topics that we managed to cover in a really wide ranging conversation:

  • Why trying to get rid of the ‘ego’ is the ultimate ego trip
  • Playing to your strengths as a coach
  • The uses and misuses of technology
  • Becoming more of a SHOT coach
  • Giving our shots a ‘name’
  • The problem with ‘Method Coaching’ and why this is perhaps the least effective coaching model
  • The dangers of relying on our memory

Nick has had a very long and distinguished coaching career, studying with some of the world’s best coaches like David Leadbetter and then going on to coach top players such as Justin Rose

He is a deep thinker about the game and is refreshingly honest and forthright in his opinions of what we need to do to get the best from our game

The response to the books has been nothing short of incredible. So many players have got in touch with us to say the books have given them a new lease of golfing life.

In today’s wonderful conversation we go in to detail about how we can become better at coaching others and perhaps more importantly OURSELVES.

  • Why much of the current coaching methods are ineffective
  • Why we need to get better at asking good QUESTIONS instead of pretending to have all the answers
  • The crucial role of INTENTION, ATTENTION and ATTITUDE and how you can build your whole season around these 3 words
  • The value of problem solving
  • The best way to use technology
  • The difference between hitting ‘balls’ and playing ‘shots’
  • The great Peter Thompson’s formula for success and how it could help you win YOUR major championship
  • How we can become so much more in tune with the GOLF COURSE and the questions it is asking you
  • How to play the ACCUMULATION game instead of the AVOIDANCE game and what a difference it can make to your mental game approach
  • How would you be if TODAY was your last round of golf? What approach would you have?
  • The myth of ‘owning a score’ whilst you are out on the course

A re confirmation of the value of GRATITUDE

A really wonderful conversation with a VERY experienced and knowledgeable coach who is smart enough to keep the game SIMPLE

Great show for you to listen to today about the role of EMOTIONS and how they can have such an impact on your game

  • What are emotions?
  • What do they actually mean?
  • How long do they last?
  • More importantly what can we do about them?

How many rounds have you played where emotions have triggered a cascade of poor shots and another score ruined?

Can you look back on your golfing life and even begin to consider how much better you would have performed IF you had more ability to deal with and release your emotions.

When emotions are running the show we can make some really STUPID decisions

The show today will give you some GREAT answers

Become an expert on yourself and how you actually trigger your emotions.

Gain insights to YOU and how you ACTUALLY work on the golf course as opposed to how you think you work

  • Understanding your emotions leads to INSIGHT
  • Emotional regulation technique
  • The 5 step PROCESS
  • Location – where is the emotion located in your body?
  • Contain the emotion – give it a shape
  • Colour – Give the emotion a colour
  • Name it – Give the emotion a NAME
  • Do something with it – Allow the emotion to RELEASE
  • Emotions only last for 7 seconds from a neuro chemical perspective, to hang on to them for longer than this is a CHOICE

Why trying to contain your emotions can be so counter productive

How anger can turn into DEPRESSION

How golfing failure can create a traumatic event in the brain

How you can use techniques to let go of the trauma. The use of EMDR

07 Jun 2024The Skill of ACCEPTANCE and why it is SO important to develop – Karl Morris #31200:24:20

The Skill of ACCEPTANCE and why it is SO important to develop – Karl Morris

Why you will always fall short of your true capability without this skill

Thanks for joining me on today’s Brain Booster which is a solo run from me. I wanted to take the opportunity to bring together some of the key concepts from the previous months and some of the recent guests.

Are you going to take ACTION and become a Certified Mind Factor coach?

Join us for a wonderful three days in Manchester in November

Get in touch at https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/

At the heart of so much of what we have been discussing is the SKILL of acceptance.

If we are not willing to be ok with the variability of potential outcomes the game can throw at us then we will always be at less than our best.

Acceptance is NOT resignation. We are not trying to pretend to be happy after a bad shot or a missed putt but we ARE willing to deal with the reality and move on

So many people are sold the idea that this swing fix or this ‘secret’ will PROTECT them from a poor outcome yet in reality NOTHING will ever protect us from the need to develop a robust relationship to undesired outcomes

  • Acceptance is an ongoing set of skills that requires a diligent and consistent approach
  • Today I will share with you the building blocks of acceptance
  • Skills that have helped many players at all levels to ACCESS their current skills
  • Why the skill acceptance begins well before the round starts
  • Why ‘contamination’ of your shots is such an issue
  • The value of journaling
  • Why making a commitment to develop acceptance is so important
  • What acceptance does to your physiology
  • Why the expression of your technical skill is dependent on your acceptance skills
  • An opportunity for you to really bring together and clarify some of the key Brain Booster concepts of the previous few months
  • HOW you can actually take action and release more of your capabilities ....Enjoy!

15 Mar 2024What is the TRUE source of your experience – Andy Morrison #30101:02:21

We welcome back onto the Brain Booster Andy Morrison for a further chat about his coaching experiences

We delve further into the nature of experience and how it is all generated by your thinking

The Lost Art of Golf 2 day school at Archerfield Links with Karl Morris and Gary Nicol

The ULTIMATE interactive learning experience at the ULTIMATE location

Andy is very prolific on Twitter/X

His main message is that he offers the opportunity to develop your game without using lots of mental game strategies and techniques

  • Why we fall into the trap of focusing too much on the CONTENT of our thinking
  • This often actually creates the opposite effect of actually making the mind even busier
  • What could we put our faith in that will have some longevity?
  • What is the true nature of thought?
  • What is actually creating our experience BEFORE the content of our thinking?

The difference between having a clear INTENTION about the shot as opposed to falling into the trap of thinking ‘what does this shot say about me?’

  • How we hang on to our ‘personal thinking’
  • Changing our relationship to what the game actually means
  • The ability to ‘stay in the game’
  • Why trying to ‘fix’ our thinking can be so detrimental
  • A really interesting session with a coach working with players at all levels of the game

24 Nov 2022The Myths of Putting that hold you back – Dr Izzy Justice #23901:03:17

Today on the Brain Booster we welcome back my good friend and colleague Dr Izzy Justice. We have recently collaborated on what we believe to be a revolutionary new putting program called

‘Neuro Putting’

‘Neuro Putting’ will be available on December 1st

go to www.themindfactor.com to get your copy

so on today’s show with Dr Izzy we look into detail about some of the most prevalent putting myths which will be holding back your game.

Myths that not only affect your ability on the greens but can also contaminate your whole game.

The game is mired in clichés such as ‘I choked’ and ‘My nerves got the better of me’

Yet what do any of these statements ACTUALLY mean?

With Dr Izzy we are able to create a new language and terminology which simplifies the game and gives you a process with which to move forward.

We need to look at missed putts from a BRAIN perspective.

What is actually happening in your brain to cause you to miss the putt?

It is almost like our brain is working directly against us so much of the time.

Yet the answers are disarmingly simple.

Many missed putts can simply be attributed to INCREASED brain activity and often this increased brain activity is driven by clinging to outdated myths and misconceptions.

In today’s show we look at:

  • Why our overstimulated brains are causing us so many problems.
  • The high incidence of mental health issues with young people in sport.
  • The myth of the ROUTINE and why trying to have the same routine could be really holding you back
  • The myth of ‘one type of putter’ and how this can severely limit your creativity
  • The myth of having just ONE kind of target on your putts and why a ‘basket’ of targets can be the answer. How the time BEFORE you putt may be the most misused time in golf.
  • The myths around REPETITION in putting.

Just a wonderful session with Dr Izzy that will REALLY get you thinking about putting in a completely different way.

The new product

‘Neuro Putting’ will be available on December 1st

02 Sep 2022Developing a SCRATCH ATTITUDE – Kent Osborne #23000:52:05

How Emotions will dictate the quality of your game

Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by performance coach from Canada Kent Osborne and we got the chance to discuss the role of EMOTION in the way you perform on the golf course or in any endeavour for that matter.

In his business life Kent has been a pioneer in the executive coaching field, and his experience helping professional athletes and corporate leaders improve their inner game revealed this truth: When it comes to personal performance, feelings are as powerful as thoughts. Or, to put it differently, you can’t think positive when you feel negative.

Applying insights from his coaching experience to golf — insights culled from the relatively new discipline of emotional intelligence that worked so well Kent was inspired to write a book so other golfers could benefit.

The Golfer Who Developed A Scratch Attitude is a fiction about an avid golfer who habitually lets frustration diminish his ability and derail his most promising rounds. In the story, he finds a mentor who teaches him how to

— feel good after a good shot

— feel great after a great shot

— feel calm after a bad swing or a bad break

Your best golf requires an artful combination of  physicalmental, and emotional skill. Kent does not suggest that grounding your game in positive feelings will magically fix the flaws in your swing or automatically enable you to make decisions like a Tour caddy. He simply says what every golfer knows from personal experience  — golf’s a hard game, and it becomes even harder when you’re restricted by negative emotion.

19 May 2023The Yips Whisperer – Jim Waldron #26301:04:18

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by one of the legends of US coaching Jim Waldron for a fascinating discussion about the Mind Body connection

Jim has spent most of his working life absorbed in the workings of consciousness and how it can apply to the game of golf

In his early years he spent time with some masters of martial arts and applied key principles to his coaching

He studied with some of the great meditation teachers such as Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Suziki Roshi

He has become very well known for his work with the yips in golf and also in numerous other sports such as baseball, basketball, darts and bowls

We discussed:

  • The two types of yips and why one type is very
  • The origination of yips and what makes things worse
  • What are the ‘fuels’ for the yips?
  • The wrong use of the conscious mind
  • The effects of negative emotion and the manifestation of FEAR
  • Why people don’t yip on a practice swing
  • The principle of Radical Acceptance
  • How ‘observation’ can change everything
  • Are you the ‘Hero’ or the ‘Victim’ of your story?
  • The value of a mindfulness practice
  • Understand your ‘focal point’ in the swing

So many wonderful ideas and concepts to consider

Jim Waldron is a nationally acclaimed golf teaching professional, mental game coach, author, and lecturer best known for his pioneering research on the mind/body connection approach to learning and teaching golf. His holistic approach to golf improvement blends swing and short game mechanics, mental focus skills, physical fitness and emotional state control into a revolutionary golf instruction paradigm. 20 Jan 2023The Power of Simplicity – How to use the ‘Performance Pentagon’ to supercharge your progress - Justin Tang #24600:58:50

The evolution of a coach from Technical overload to effective Simplicity

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by one of the top young coaches in Asia Justin Tang.

Justin’s journey as a coach is incredibly inspiring.

He is a perfect example of someone who has a passionate desire to become the very best version of himself as a coach

He has a background in the ‘Golfing Machine’ but he has looked very deeply into the nature of learning and how it is vitally important to ‘personalise’ the information you receive.

He came to realise that the glue that holds all of the game together is the BRAIN

  • Learning must be Brain Compatible
  • The ONLY non negotiable in the swing
  • The one fundamental that every player should consider
  • Landing the club after the ball – such a simple principle but highly efficient in terms of BETTER golf shots
  • Task based learning and how the body will organise motion

We discuss the Performance Pentagon

Made up of

  • Technique
  • Skill
  • Emotion
  • Fitness
  • Strategic Planning

What kind of learner are you?

How you can use ‘differential learning’ to trap the correct feeling in your swing

How pinning all of the blame on the golf swing is a LAZY way to coach

The danger of changing swings without understanding the whole picture

How the mental game in golf is different from other sports and what to do about it

Why the idea of ‘grinding’ can be so damaging for your game

The ability to see poor shots from a different perspective

Why you need to be aware of ‘time travel’ in your mind when you are playing golf

Every golf shot is a ‘Problem seeking a Solution’

Divorcing yourself from the OUTCOME of a shot with probabilistic thinking

The need to question our existing beliefs and ‘stories’

Celebrating individuality

A really great session with a very forward thinking and effective coach

08 Sep 2023Learning from the Greats of the Game – Grant Waite #27700:53:56

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by a special guest in the shape of top coach Grant Waite.

Grant played for many successful years on the PGA Tour and had the opportunity to observe and learn from the true greats of the game such as Jack Nicklaus to Tiger Woods.

He became at one point on the PGA Tour statistically the best ball striker in the world.

Grant spent a lot of time with legendary coach Mac O’Grady both working on his own game and then developing his own philosophy.

Contrary to popular belief about his methodology Mac really helped Grant to understand so much more about swings and how we need to ‘match up’

Easy to understand a swing like Adam Scott but how do swings like Lee Trevino and Jim Furyk match up?

17 May 2024How to find success without losing yourself – Simon Mundie #30900:50:23

On today’s show we have former BBC sports presenter Simon Mundie who has recently released a tremendous book called ‘How to find success without losing yourself’

Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions:

Download Mind Caddie Here

Simon has spent many years interviewing and being around some of the greatest names in sport.

People who have achieved what others may think as being the ‘ultimate’ experience

Yet often he detected there was an underlying dissatisfaction

Champion Thinking is a counter to the ‘success evangelism’ that is so prevalent.

Typically, we think we’ll be happy when X happens (the job, house, relationship, World Cup win, Olympic gold medal). However, frequently people reach the top of their success Everest and feel underwhelmed or even empty.

But the experience of flow is inherently enjoyable. Why is that? Because as thoughts about past and future drop away, so does our identity and sense of self. And we love it when that happens! The trophy is just a symbol of that moment. That’s why we love losing ourselves – in sport, music, conversation, books, dance – the portals are vast.

While we think we want to become a ‘somebody’, we are happiest when we experience being ‘nobody’. On that level, we are always at peace, whole and fulfilled. The trick then is to embody this recognition, even when we are not 'in flow', and this book can show you how.

This is a great conversation exploring some of the deeper topics around our experience.

  • What is ‘non duality’?
  • How can we incorporate this in our everyday life?
  • What is the difference between our ‘thinking mind’ and our ‘observing mind’?
  • How to create some separation from our thoughts so we don’t get so caught up in the content of our thinking
  • What are the best way to set goals?
  • What does make us truly happy?
  • A really thought provoking session from someone who has been able to see through the illusion of ‘I will be happy when”
