09 Mar 2021Critics' Choice, PGA Nom Reactions - Half Beef - ORC 03/8/2101:07:04
The 2021 Critics Choice Awards get an MMO review & recap. Plus, we react to the nominations from the Producers Guild of America. So to get it all done, we group our takes going movie by movie to discuss what they’ve won, lost, and how they all may do come Oscar Noms Monday. What is This Episode? - Top of Show . CRITICS’ CHOICE TV PRESENTATION: Highs - 2:00 Lows/WTFs - 6:09 TV Round Up - 10:00 . CRITICS CHOICE RESULTS/PRODUCERS GUILD NOM REACTIONS: PGA Best Picture Stats/Noms - 11:40 Nomadland - 14:30 Borat 2 - 21:13 (And a WIDE OPEN Supp Actress Race) Soul - 30:25 (incl PGA Animated Feature Noms - 31:25) Trial of the Chicago 7 - 32:33 Sound of Metal - 35:36 Minari - 37:14 Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom - 43:20 Promising Young Woman - 45:36 One Night in Miami - 49:11 Mank - 51:28 Judas and the Black Messiah - 55:57 Snubs - 57:30 . PGA Documentary Noms - 1:02:20 . Where To Find Us/LEAVE US A 5* REVIEW! - 1:03:35 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:04:21 We begin with a review of the Critics Choice 2021 Awards broadcast on The CW. There’s some highlights, lowlights, and corny-ass dad joke catastrophes to lament / celebrate(?). But we also genuinely rejoice in some of the winners as we begin the episode with our thoughts on the TV side of things. Then to discuss all the film awards, we actually decided on a unique organizational format for this particular recap show, and it’s all because we got the odd pairing of the Critics Choice Awards Show AND the Producers Guild of America nominations. Now if you know our stuff, then you’re familiar with how the PGA noms usually lead us into a film by film power ranking discussion on the Best Picture category. So we have some stats that back up this traditional MMO programming decision before using the PGA noms to group our thoughts. In other words, we structure this episode much better than how I’m writing about it right now. We go movie by movie, reciting all of the win/loss tallies and many highlights from the Critics Choice Awards. This mirrors and becomes quite the companion piece to our last episode, where we followed a similar structure to preview the Choice, but more so, to look ahead to the Oscar Noms and contending prowess of all these films. What do we make of Nomadland’s piping hot start? Are the Soul Best Picture dreams dying while the Borat 2 dreams awaken back from the dead? Is Minari holding serve? Will the industry return to The Trial of the Chicago 7? And how do we view the races in all of the categories as we head into nomination Monday? Yes, it’s an awards show recap. But hopefully, the format & structure will play for weeks to come. As always, we want to hear your thoughts. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are at Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. You can subscribe / rate / review / like / share / & hear us on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about wherever you might listen. 10 Mar 2021BAFTA, DGA, Noms, News, and WTFs?! - ORC 3/9/2101:15:51
We got noms for the DGA’s and the BAFTA Independent Spirit Awards... Look, we’re actually happy with some of these nominations, happier in fact, than with what we’ve otherwise been getting at other award shows. But this was certainly a major correction at BAFTA. What is This Episode?/W.T.F?! - Top of Show How These Noms Happened - 2:41 . BEST DIRECTOR (BAFTA + DGA) CATEGORIES: Various Categories + Noms - 8:50 Analysis - 11:15 BAFTA Noms +Snubs - 15:01 . Where To Find Us/LEAVE US A 5* REVIEW! - 1:13:05 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:13:51 Our show begins with a cursory discussion on the new BAFTA voting procedures and how for most categories, they opted for juries instead of widespread branch voting. Then we begin the nom conversations with the Director categories at both the DGA and the BAFTAs. From there, we do focus on the BAFTAs, and yes, there’s a lot of fun nominations in here to celebrate and enjoy and seek out to view after these noms. But there’s also a lot of weird inside jokes to make about our Mike and Mike movie takes, and we would not be who we are without overindulging in said jokes. As for the format though, we do go category by category and discuss all of the BAFTA noms with eyes forward to the Oscars. Which noms and snubs will affect the Oscar Noms? Which surprises could potentially impact the eventual Oscar races? We break it all down in this thorough overview. As always, we want to hear your thoughts on any/ all of these races. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are at Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. 13 Mar 2021Oscar Nom Predictions - History, Stats, Shocks, + Regret = Must Be Oscars Season - ORC 3/12/2101:48:02
We correctly predicted over 80% of the eventual Oscar Noms in this episode. Could we have done better? Did we make some dumb mistakes? Can we talk ourselves out of wiser picks? Of course. AlsoMike’s Shots Categories Demands - 1:41:44 . . Where To Find Us/LEAVE US A 5* REVIEW! - 1:44:58 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:46:11 It’s our annual Oscar Nom predictions show as we discuss 20 of the eventual 23 categories. Yes, we’re proud of doing fairly well this year, only a few percentage points behind some of our favorite pundits and forecasters. But could we’ve done better? Of course. What’s important though, is the conversation, and my god, did we ever have a conversation here. One Mike leans heavily on the precursor resumes for each potential nominee. So this episode should actually be useful to you and play beyond its typical nomination expiration date. Meanwhile, the other Mike enjoys a variety of strategies including some deep dives into Oscars history, references to Vegas, and his mind is certainly much more open to all the scuttlebutt we’ve been hearing for months. One might even say, he’s put on a tinfoil hat or two. But regardless of who’s making the picks, we cannot help but succumb to the powers of many an Oscars narrative and certainly, to our own movie reviews. This is perhaps the most researched show of the year, it’s probably our most thorough, and it’s certainly one of our absolute favorites to record. So whether you’re tuning in before or after the nominations or hell, even after the actual awards themselves - relive this awards season with our annual Oscar Nom predictions special. Where To Find Us/LEAVE US A 5* REVIEW! - 1:22:52 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:24:23 In what has become an annual tradition, we got comfortable behind the microphones on nomination morning and recorded a massive Oscar Nom reaction show. Yes, it’s a bit raw. Yes, we’re more emotions than statistics in this one. But since we were able to enjoy many more pleasant surprises than painful snubs, it’s perhaps our most celebratory morning of this whole gosh darned pandemic, never mind one of our happier Oscar nom mornings in a long while. We start with the overall and discuss the film by film tallies. A few favorites overperformed while a few others did not. But we because we spent the past few weeks following this movie by movie format, it was much easier to reference how films did. So that’s your first 20 or so minutes. Then, as we always do, we go category by category and break down who’s in, who’s out, and who could be winning each of these Oscar races. We spend about 30 minutes with the big 8 categories, and then we spend another half hour with the undercard. But whatever the category, we’re able to reference our predictions and their precursor resumes to give you as full a picture as we can. Check out our next episode with the Emmy winning Adnan Virk, who helps us dive even deeper into these nominations and how they’ve been received both inside and outside of the industry. Then we’ll have additional guests to analyze all of the best races before Oscars Sunday on April 25th. As always, we want to hear your thoughts. Make sure you all follow at AdnanSVirk and CinephilePod on Twitter, and please subscribe, rate & review his shows on Apple Podcasts or wherever you may listen. As for this episode, we needed an Oscar Nom fallout show, and our guest has literally won an Emmy for his coverage Oscars fallout. So we don’t hold back any tough questions, whether we’re asking about these nominations or this film year or the industry at large, and Adnan certainly delivers one insightful response after the next. After our interview, we enjoy one final segment celebrating just how historic and refreshing these nominations truly were, and our thanks go out to the staff at The Hollywood Reporter for summarizing all these stats and milestones in one place. Then stay tuned for our next episode, where Craig and I review the massive movie event on HBO MAX, Zach Snyder’s Justice League. As for this latest episode of Oscar Race Checkpoint, David and I tag teamed a humongous google document of research, stats, and betting odds, all of which we present and discuss in reaction to the recent winners at the Producers and Writers Guilds of America Awards. Nomadland is looking like a runaway in Best Picture. But we do offer some devil’s advocacy before becoming devils on your shoulders as we analyze the betting. The animated and documentary feature markets will move in opposite directions after Soul and My Octopus Teacher took home PGAs. Then we dissect two intriguing screenplay races, where one newly declared frontrunner gains speed as another may be looking over its shoulder at an unlikely challenger. Look, we certainly missed Mike 1 during this recording, and we’ll get back into our flow again soon. But both Mike and I are thrilled we could share our feed with David and Craig in what amounted to a glorious dual episode recording. As for this episode, Craig and Also Mike take the dive into Zach Snyder’s Justice League. We may slow play the harsh criticism and save most of that until our spoiler section, and much of the reason for that is how many of our friends, relatives, and fellow film critics love this movie. We love and respect and will continue to value their opinions. HOWEVER… we cannot roll with any of them on this film. Sorry. But we are not sorry. Hopefully, our points are made… eventually. Hopefully, our relationships are strong enough to survive polarized opinions… on this one movie. And hopefully, all our listeners subscribe to Is It Worth It? The Film Review Podcast after loving… or maybe even loving to hate this a Mike’s opinion in this episode. We’re not trying to be talk radio for movie fans, in a podcast, just so we can share the same opinions with everybody else. Where To Find Us/LEAVE US A 5* REVIEW! - 49:18 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 50:04 Our annual Oscar Category series is about to begin. But before we bring in all our guests, we must analyze which winners may already be locked into being “sure things.” So we use the updated gambling odds, we recap how awards season has built consensus, and unlike the past, we have declared some early Oscar winning locks. Best Director has been dominated all season by Chloe Zhao. We discuss her resume, analyze the betting, poll the punditry, quote some stats, and we dive into another big discussion on why Nomadland seems to be an awards juggernaut this season, much of it coming from the fact that Chloe Zhao has a lock on Best Director. Then we must pivot to Lead Actor. It’s certainly one of the better 5’s in a while. But atop the field, there’s been one undeniable performance. So again, we analyze the numbers coming from Vegas, we discuss how the season has deservedly paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman. Finally, we cannot finish this episode without looking at the rest of the card. So from Best Picture through to Best Sound, we discuss all of the betting favorites and whether or not we’re comfortable declaring them as locks or not. The Mikes will disagree a bit in this segment. But yes, there are a few spots where we pull out our keys. As always, we wanna know what you think. Do you agree with the categories we’ve locked? Would you lock others? Let us know. She’s got reviews of streaming services, films, tv series, products, live events, and many of which, so we don’t have to. She’s a check on influencers, she’s an honest voice in this dishonest internet world, and she’s our hero. So as usual, we had a blast talking with Amanda of Swell Entertainment. She returns to the show for a fourth time after reviews of Rebecca & The New Mutants, and after our special Top 5 episode, Film Sets From Hell with Swell, where we discussed all our favorite production stories from Hollywood lore. You can now check out all 4 of these shows on our Soundcloud feed under The Swell Playlist. As for this episode, we begin our 2021 Oscar Category Overview Series with a deep dive into one of the tighter races, Supporting Actress, and the format is simple. We make arguments for and against each of the nominees - why they should win, and how they could lose. This format shouldn’t necessarily lead to a full on Mike 1 meltdown. But then again, if you’ve been listening of late, you’re also not surprised. Glenn Close vs Olivia Colman has once again brought out the absolute best of the worst in both Mikes. Though luckily for us, Amanda is here to keep us in check. Don’t forget to let us know what you think. Where To Find Our Work/LEAVE US A 5* REVIEW! - 1:06:11 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:07:21 The Screen Actors Guild opted for an hour long Awards Show overstuffed with celebrity “actOR” interviews about uh… well… nothing. Dame Helen Mirren saw a bear in the woods. Yay. So we reviewed the actual SAG broadcast and summarized the TV and Stunt award sections for the first 10 minutes. Then we dive into the 5 big categories that’ll potentially affect the Oscars. Should we lock the supporting actor trophy after Daniel Kaluuya continued his sweep? How formidable did Yuh-jung Youn become after winning supporting actress? And how many words will we need to eat (sigh) about the lead categories? Relive this pivotal step in how we’ll project these acting categories before we dive into another big chat about Best Picture with how the SAG Ensemble Award has factored in statistically and historically, especially in recent years. Before we finish this Oscar Race Checkpoint, we need to begin our reviews of the Short Subjects, and today, we tackle the Documentary Shorts. It’s an unusually rewarding field of 5 films, and we do have a lot of praise to give. So do check them out. Otherwise, and as always, we want to hear your thoughts. 08 Apr 2021Lead Actress w/ Izzy of Be Kind Rewind! - 2021 Category Review - Ep 35501:02:07
Izzy of Be Kind Rewind returns to break down the battle royale that is Best Actress. Has she ever seen a race this close? Who delivered her favorite performances? This race has been our favorite all year, and we’re thrilled to have Isabel C back on MMO to discuss. Where To Find Izzy’s Work/LEAVE US A 5* REVIEW! - 58:22 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 59:41 Make sure you all subscribe to Be Kind Rewind on Youtube. It’s certainly one of our favorite channels, and turn on her notifications because her videos are appointment viewing for all film fans. Of course, you can follow her on Twitter and Instagram, and you should also support her work on Patreon. If anyone deserves our support, it’s Izzy. Bottom line: for the second year in a row, Izzy delivered one of our absolute favorite episodes of MMO. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of the Oscars and this Best Actress category in particular. She may preface the episode with the fact that she’s not as locked in as usual, but don’t let her modesty fool you. Izzy knocks us out once again with all her takes, and if you’re listening after the Oscars (spoiler alert), she winds up being right. Now we truly dive into the twists and turns of this unprecedentedly tight race. But we also bookend the episode with questions about how and why she creates content for Be Kind Rewind and where she sees the industry trending and turning. The answers, as always, may surprise you. We otherwise finish the episode with our snubs and top 5’s in the Lead Actress category of 2020/21. This is our annual tradition, and we’ve certainly built up to it for long enough. So after changing our rankings for what seems like a thousand times throughout this closest of races, we finalize our performance 5’s in this final countdown. As always, we want to hear your thoughts. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are at Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. Then we dive into the acting categories before rolling up and down the card to bring you all up to date on which races are heating up. Our recap certainly breaks for all the highs and lows. But as we’ve become accustomed to do, we also update you on gambling lines, include crossover stats, and as always, we tally up all the wins and losses film by film. Since it’s the last precursor of the season, it’s a big one, and if you’re coming back to this episode after the Oscars (it proved to be quite predictive). Otherwise, we finish with a review of the Oscar Nominated Animated Shorts, and what a collection of films this is. You have artsy films that we have tweeted about snarkily in recent days. You have an adorable film on Disney Plus, a terribly sad film on Netflix, a rewarding think piece from South Korea, and a sweet and funny short from Iceland. So we hope you enjoy the mix as much as we did, and we encourage you to check them out. As always, we want to hear your thoughts. We’ve reviewed all the contenders, covered all the news, interviewed a host of talented guests, and we even enjoyed a few side series or 7. But never, in a million years could we have guessed that the year we just lived would end like THIS. It’s truly an unprecedented Oscars, and we break down that finale for the first 25 minutes before we can get back to our regularly scheduled programming. The task of parsing through what they intended and what we all experienced is not something new to us film critics. But we certainly never felt this conflicted after an Oscars broadcast, and we must work through the roller coaster of emotions we all felt from this ceremony. Afterwards, we can get back to doing what we do here at MMO, and that’s a recap of all the highs, lows, wins, and losses from the 93rd Academy Awards. Otherwise, we need to thank YOU for making this such a special year and awards season here at MMO. We could not have gotten through this pandemic with our sanity intact without all of you, and we hope you’ll join us for another awards season that’ll begin, well, almost immediately. We’ll bring this year to a final close after our next two episodes - Oscars Fallout w/ Ryan McQuade and The 2020 Mike, Mike, and Oscars: our annual homemade year end awards show. We promise to ask all of our burning questions to our returning guest in Mr. McQuade, and then as promised, we’ll get very very weird with this year’s MMO’s to celebrate all our favorite things about the apocalypse we just survived. As always, we want to know your thoughts and reactions to this year’s Oscars. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are at Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. Lee. Then you can read his work at InSession Film, Awards Watch, Awards Radar, and Film Speak. Ryan is certainly one of the most prolific Oscar pundits in the business, we featured him on both our Quarter 1 and Fall Oscar specials, and we certainly enjoyed our latest crossover with him after the 93rd Academy Awards, where we also made our 3rd appearance on Chasing The Gold at InSession Film. In fact, we completed our conversation that we started on CTG with this episode. Ryan discusses what he teased in terms of an Oscars host, who could handle the job, and why a host would have improved this past broadcast. We also read into the voting and power rank how we think the Best Pictures were ultimately viewed by the Academy before we close with some burning questions about Anthony Hopkins, Nomadland, and the future of movie theaters. We thank Ryan once again, and we thank all of you for what was yet another terrific season for MMO. As always we want to hear your thoughts. It’s our annual film year awards show - The Mike, Mike, And Oscars! (We’re not good at naming things). Look, this year was lonnngggg. Where To Find Our Work/LEAVE US A 5* REVIEW! - 1:14:15 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:15:20 Like I said, we got weird with this. To prove it, here are some of the categories - Film That Hailed The Apocalypse, Movie Title We’d Like To Make Inappropriate Jokes About Most, Film We’d Like Malcolm & Marie To Argue About Next, and those are just the first 3. This is not and could not be the usual MMOs format of us picking the Oscar categories ourselves. That is fun in most years, but doing it AFTER the actual 93rd’s was a total non-starter. We also didn’t want to force our audience to write the show for similar reasons. So this was something we had to tackle ourselves, and if the non-stop laugh riot giggle fit of a recording session is any indication, it went about as well as we could have hoped. Bottom Line: we had a lot of fun, and these 2020/21 Mike, Mike, and Oscars were a therapeutic way to FINALLY bring the past film year to a close. If you enjoyed this episode, do check out our “MMO-Made Awards Shows” playlist on Soundcloud. There, you can find all 18 of our homemade award show podcasts including the MMOs, The Scaries, and themed shows for each of our series from the MCU to David Fincher films. We’re also very proud of this past awards season of MMO. We welcomed new guests like Jazz Tangcay, Adnan Virk, and the guys from Is It Worth It, and we welcomed back returning guests like Amanda of Swell Entertainment, Izzy of Be Kind Rewind, Erick Weber of Awards Ace, Ryan McQuade of InSession Film, and Scott Feinberg of THR. We also kept up our Mike and Mike solo show reps from tons of Oscar Race Checkpoints, OSP Movie Reviews, and so many other series and themed episodes. Last but not least, we cannot bring the 2020/21 film year to a close without thanking you. As we said at the end of the past few shows, we’re so very grateful to have your ears a few times every week to talk movies. 2020 may have sucked, but the podcast, as ever, has been a joy, and we couldn’t and wouldn’t do it without all of you. So thanks again. Otherwise, and as always, we want to know what you think. Tell us about your 2020/21 Film Year Awards. But even though there’s uncertainty in what’s to come, we rejoice in how this organization is finally being held accountable. The rest of the episode is a celebration of how many movies we should all get excited about for the next 6-8 months. We got studio by studio, slate by slate, and yes, film by film to discuss all of the potential awards level movies for next year’s Oscar race. For the last 3 years at least, we’ve incorporated 2 episodes in each new Year In Preview Series, what Mike and I call “The Pictures” and “The Picks.” This, of course, is our episode on “The Pictures,” where we enjoy around a hundred snapshot previews of all the potential contenders for the upcoming films 94th Academy Awards. The 2021 film slate is robust with buzzy titles, and they’ll be released throughout the calendar year. But as connoisseurs of all qualities of cinema, great and terrible, we cannot help but wonder which films will disappoint and which others will pleasantly surprise. There are discussions of spring and summer properties like Disney’s Cruella, Pixar’s Luca, and M. Night Shyamalan’s Old. We discuss potential Oscar films like Three Thousand Years of Longing, The Last Duel, Spencer, Being The Ricardos, The Many Saints of Newark, and West Side Story. Plus, Swell finally brings the hammer of logic down on those tall tales of a humongous red dog. Whoever’s not presenting a film has the option to play devil’s advocate, and we often make strong arguments in favor of these films as well. But if one thing’s for sure, regardless of the quality of film, they’ll all be must-see viewing experiences this year. As always, we want to hear your thoughts and whether or not you’re worried or stoked for these films. Where To Find Our Work/LEAVE US 5* REVIEWS! - 1:34:25 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:35:34 One of the highlights of our every year is turning the page with this Year In Preview miniseries. This year, we dove into 3 large episodes over 2 weeks of programming, and once again, we are rejuvenated and reinvigorated by this new slate. In episode 1, we researched all of the potential awards worthy films from all of the studios and streamers. Then we brought in a familiar guest in Amanda of Swell Entertainment to talk about the top 10 films we’re worried about in 2021 before making our picks here. Look, much like the kids at Professor Xavier’s school, we don’t really know how our powers work. Are we 100% accurate in combination? Is it like a prophecy from myth and legend? Or do we just be 100% accurate in our predictions each film year as long as nobody goes back to check our work from the previous one? This is for scholars to debate, and for you to ignore. Just sit back, relax, and get yourself previewed for this next slate of new films. After a year like the last one, we all could use a bunch of boisterous buzzy titles to enjoy. As always, we want to hear your thoughts on the upcoming awards season, and we’d love to know all your way too early picks. 02 Jun 2021Streaming Wars Update w/ AlsoMike + NOMCast Andrew - Ep 36301:22:00
The NOMcast’s Andrew Morgan and Also Mike discuss where we’re at with the Streaming Wars after several mergers, acquisitions, and content deals amongst entertainment industry giants. In this Streaming Wars MMO / NOMcast crossover special, we begin with our analysis of all the latest news. MGM sold to Amazon, Time Warner spun off from AT&T with Discovery, and Sony made pacts with both Disney and Netflix this spring. So as we break down how these deals could change the landscape, we further the conversation by comparing the current offerings and numbers of all the streamers. Then it’s time for the speculation. Should Netflix merge with a media conglomerate or acquire a Hollywood movie studio? And if so, which studios might be available? And which studio should they buy? We cite several pieces from The Entertainment Strategy Guy at the website, What’s On Netflix, and we also do some further research to discuss and decide what we’d do and when / if we’d do it for the last 45 minutes of this episode. As always, do make sure you all subscribe to The NOMcast, the Netflix Original Movie podcast and follow Andrew on all social media. He’s at nomcastpod at his website, and on Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram. You can also follow Andrew Morgan on Twitter at jokesondrew. Otherwise, make sure to tell us at MMO what you speculate will happen in the streaming wars. But my god, was it necessary. Mike 1 is welcomed back after a short hiatus, and without missing a beat, we return to all our usual, glorious nonsense. We describe each plot poorly, ask ourselves who’s fastest and most furious, we rate the ridiculousness, add hypothetical characters, and we rejoice in all of the legitimate and illegitimate highlights of each Fast and Furious movie. Oh, and we end each spoiler filled review with questions about what if this plot actually happened and all the cool things that merited so many sequels. If you enjoyed this series, do check out previous playlists covering James Bond, Joker & Batman, Pixar, the Halloween franchise, the Conjuring films, and of course, our very first Oscars offseason series on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This Oscars offseason won’t last long as In The Heights hits theaters soon for what will be our first Oscars Profile Movie Review of the new year. 16 Jun 2021Fast & Furious 4, 5, + 6 - 2 Mike, 2 Furious: Part 2 - This Time, It's Unnecessary - Ep 36601:18:07
We joyously review Fast & Furious (4), Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6 in our second episode of this 2 Mike 2 Furious miniseries. What Is This Episode/Series? - Top of Show . 2 MIKE, 2 FURIOUS: . Fast and Furious (2009): Describe the Plot Poorly - 2:44 Who’s Fastest/Most Furious? - 4:58 Rate the Ridiculousness - 11:10 Add Someone To Improve This - 17:00 Highest Unintentional Comedy - 20:34 Legitimate Highlight/What Merits a Sequel - 24:09 If This Actually Happened IRL… - 25:31 . Where To Find Our Work/LEAVE US 5* REVIEWS! - 1:14:25 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:16:06 The fourth Fast & Furious brings the original cast back together in Cali with the return of Dom, Bryan, Letty, and Mia. It’s a soap opera and an action spectacular, full of brooding Vin Diesel’s and yelling Paul Walker’s that we welcome back to the franchise. Fast Five heads to Brazil with a Dom team that’s way more than 5 members with the additions of Han & Gisele + Ludacris & Tyrese, and it’s a good thing too because The Rock has a world police badge and impunity and he knows it. Then in Fast & Furious 6, one super team of international criminals faces off against another in a globe-trotting, James Bond styled adventure that ends with various 1 on 1 fight scenes on a giant plane that requires 20 minutes of runway to lift off. So we resume our patented series format for each of these 3 reviews, and yes, it’s spoiler filled. (Though c’mon, even if you haven’t seen one or two of these movies, your enjoyment of the films and our show should NOT be mutually exclusive.) We describe the plot poorly, discuss who’s fastest and most furious, rate the ridiculousness, add someone to make it better, celebrate the highest unintentional comedy and the legitimate highlights, and we do a license to bill styled “what if” this actually happened. As always, we want to hear your thoughts on all of these Fast Saga films. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are at Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. 19 Jun 2021Why Aren't You More Worried?!?! + Luca Review, In The Heights/Dune/WB, More - ORC 6/19/2101:14:55
Luca disappoints, the mid-June box office self destructs, and In The Heights suffers a controversy. Where to Find Us/LEAVE US A 5* REVIEW! - 1:12:20 What’s Next/Words of Wisdom - 1:13:40 You get a raw, emotional review of Pixar’s Luca from a very Italian Also Mike for the first 10 minutes that even if you disagree, brings up a substantive offshoot of the conversation about one of our most relied upon forms of film appreciation, the Tomato-meter. Then it’s finally time to really dive into the spring box office, and suffice it to say, we’re very worried. We talk about some historical June numbers, discuss some of the mitigating factors, have several rants about various release strategies, and yeah, we cannot help but wonder why more film pros aren’t concerned. So it’s us being worry warts (we hope) in the first half before we can find some reasons for more optimism in the second. That’s where film festivals enter the conversation as we have some exciting news from Venice with Dune, Telluride re: Barry Jenkins, and then with Cannes and a certain french wild man making another wild ass movie. Finally, as if the tension / relief and the mood swings of the episode finally take their toll, we get especially weird and goofy during the trailer thoughts portion of the show. Some of that is due to the fact that Nicolas Cage is starring in a movie called “Pig.” But other reasons include Andrew Garfield, more Andrew Garfield, great & terrible face make-up, and the fact that neither of us knows enough about action movie history. So what do you think of all these intense swings of feeling? Do you agree, and are you panicking with us? Should we be talked down? Let us know. Steven Spielberg has been outspoken about streaming services in the past, especially when it’s pertained to the awards shows we cover, and now he’s teaming up with who? For what? And with what movies?!?! We also discuss the awards season calendar as the BAFTAs have set their date, and we celebrate news from The Academy as they’ve selected a new Board of Governors. We then dive back into our ongoing analysis of the movie going industry as Mike 1 used his legal background and researched bankruptcies after the news about Pacific Theaters and Arclight Cinemas. There’s also some encouraging summer projections and a fun set of early Toronto film fest selections. For our last 35 minutes, Also Mike makes 12 film recommendations from the Tribeca Film Festival, and to do this, we present another MMO Homemade Awards Show format. There’s a best documentary category with bonafide Oscar contenders, we give out some performance awards to both some Oscar hopefuls and breakthrough artists, and there’s also some must see genre films that we want you to discover. The Voice - 1:10:00 . . Where To Find Our Work/LEAVE US 5* REVIEWS! - 1:12:30 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:14:21 This miniseries has been a joy and we can’t stop laughing and having fun in these recordings. So there’s no pretending to be serious or our typical awards pundit snobbish selves. This is the cleansing of the palette, the balancing of the movie diet, and after a year of indie film Oscar contenders, this 2 Mike 2 Furious series could not have come at a better time. We continue with our spoiler filled format of describing the plot poorly, which we spice up via some alternate titles and taglines. Then we talk characters with our gloriously inventive prompts of who’s fastest and most furious. We rate the ridiculousness to discuss some of our bests of the worst, we speculate about the franchises’ future and talk tone by asking who we’d add to make these better, and we have fits of laughter in discussing our highest unintentional comedy. Finally, we end with some legit cinematic highlights before ending with our fun License to Bill styled segment of What If This Really Happened. This series also continues to shock and surprise us with how it delivers some incredible cinematic goods. Furious 7 contains some of the most heartwarming and emotional moments of the saga, The Fate of the Furious goes bigger and crazier with its most melodramatic plot yet, but also some of its best and worst performances. Then in Hobbs & Shaw, we gush over the production values and the comedy writing as we get to know a host of new characters surrounding our favorite meathead spinoffs. As always, we want to hear your thoughts on all of these Fast Saga films. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are at Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. Watch Hulu’s Solar Opposites and Star Trek: Lower Decks on Paramount +, subscribe to Guilty Pleasures on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you might listen, and follow Garrick Bernard (at his name) via his website, Twitter, and Instagram. If you are spoiler phobic, there’s about 20 minutes of non-spoilers to kick off this episode. Garrick discusses what the franchise has meant to him, why Justin Lin both tapped into and elevated an entire car culture with Tokyo Drift, and how Lin & F9 still deliver so much, despite polarizing reviews from critics. He also talks about the joys of attending the Hollywood Chinese Theater press screening and how the cars of F9 stack up with those that you can find in the rest of the series and with what’s allowed on American streets. You then get your spoiler warning, and we dive into the plot breakdown in the same format that we’ve enjoyed for each of the 9 previous films. We describe the plot poorly, discuss the fastest and most furious characters, rate the action movie ridiculousness, and speculate about what’s next for the famiglia. There’s also a shockingly wise and serious discussion about the Oscars before Garrick gets us laughing again with side convos on everyone from Tom Cruise to Martin Scorsese. As always, we hope you enjoyed this episode as much as we did, and we want to hear your thoughts. 02 Jul 2021When Halloween Kills Shang Chi, The Academy Makes Changes - ORC 7/2/2101:15:56
Trailers breakdowns, Academy news, and a Zola review headline this big magical red dog of an early July episode of Oscar Race Checkpoint, including our return to Haddonfield with the first full trailer of Halloween Kills. The Big Industry News Sucks Right Now - Top of Show . . TRAILER ANALYSIS: Don’t Breathe 2 - 4:50 The Many Saints of Newark - 9:10 Clifford The Big Red Dog - 16:45 Shang Chi Trailer #2 - 20:40 The Harder They Fall - 26:50 Coda - 33:00 Halloween Kills + News - 36:00 . . ZOLA REVIEW - 1:07:05 . . Where to Find Us/LEAVE US A 5* REVIEW! - 1:12:20 What’s Next/Words of Wisdom - 1:13:12 We react to all sorts of movie trailers to begin this episode. Don’t Breathe 2 disturbs us with several unwanted mysteries. The Many Saints of Newark brings out our nostalghia for one of the greats. Amanda of Swell Entertainment relays some of her thoughts on the trailer of Clifford The Big Red Dog. Shang Chi’s second preview worries each of us in different ways. The Harder They Fall looks like a hit and therefore, less like a nom (?), and the first trailer for Coda delivers a theme worthy of all acclaim. So after a rough night of entertainment world news that we do lament atop the episode, we are able to pivot into a bunch of fun film previews, and we save our favorite for the centerpiece of this episode. Halloween Kills released its first full trailer, and we must react. There’s also news about the film’s premiere in Venice, about the achievements of Jamie Lee Curtis, and of course, we speculate about how Haddonfield will combat pure evil in the sequel to one of our absolute favorite films of 2018. If you enjoyed this centerpiece, then do check out our “MMO Does Halloween” series, and stay tuned for more Michael Myers centric content as we head into scary season this fall. But this ORC does not end there. We deliver our immediate reactions to the changes made by The Academy. There’s a continuation of some pandemic year legislation, we can confirm several big rules like the flat 10 Best Picture Nominations and the March thru December eligibility window, and then we discuss some of the expanded shortlists, and the tweaks to how music and sound branches will operate in the future. To close things out, we react to how Warner Bros shuffled around their fall release dates, which brings up a conversation about the loaded fall calendar at large. Last Night In Soho moved back a week, and we also wonder if there’s gonna be more movement still to come. Finally, we leave you with a quick non-spoiler review of A24’s Zola. As always, we want to hear your thoughts on any of these previews, reviews, or Oscar discussion points. Then we celebrate how Adam Driver pays tribute with our reactions to Cannes opening night and Day 1, highlighted by Annette and Val. We move into some Academy and Guild news as AMPAS welcomes in a big new class of members and SAG AFTRA may be ushering in a new era of leadership. M1 has hot takes and pizzazz to spare, which is good, because Also Mike barely knows what is happening when they’re not talking about movies. Lucky for us both though, we have a new slate of 4th of July movies. So you get an optimistic box office update after the US and Europe saw one of its better weekends since covid began, and go figure, there’s even more hype to come with the Black Widow projections. Did somebody impersonate us, or have our worries for movie theaters begun to subside? Then we enjoy another huge Make The Case / What We’re Watching movie review segment to continue to cover the overall slate of our late June, early July viewing. We weigh in on LFG, Sisters On Track, The Courier, and Dream Horse. Then AM peppers M1 with some questions on A Quiet Place Part II, Fear Street Part I: 1994, and Werewolves Within before we both get salty over No Sudden Move. Finally, as promised, Also Mike makes his recommendations from AFI DOCS, including the Daily Show’s CJ Hunt film The Neutral Ground, audience award winner Storm Lake, the upcoming Ryan Murphy Netflix film Pray Away, and several rewarding film watches like Luchadoras, The One And Only Dick Gregory, and No Straight Lines: The Rise of Queer Comics. 15 Jul 2021Unqualified Emmy Reactions 2: Mike1's Mic Is Off. Again. - ORC 7/15/2101:10:08
Hey. It still sounds close to normal. But Mike1’s mic just plain decided not to work. Our apologies. The last time this happened was, ironically, during our Emmy Noms Reaction Show last year. As always, we’ll let you be the judge if we should be in charge. But this is still an episode of Oscar Race Checkpoint for many good reasons. There are industry news discussions on A24 being possibly up for sale and what the Black Widow box office and Disney Plus PVOD numbers mean for the entertainment business at large. There are some very Oscar(y) trailers for what may be some future trophy winners in Flee, Dune, Encanto, The Lost Leonardo, and Pixar’s Turning Red. Then we move into some Oscar headlines regarding Guillermo Del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, Leo’s bearded Don’t Look Up from Netflix, Kristen Stewart as Lady Di in Spencer, and some way too early supporting actor posturing for the ensemble of Bleecker’s Sundance film, Mass. Where To Find Our Work/LEAVE US 5* REVIEWS! - 1:02:57 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:04:00 We discuss the awards, Spike Lee’s gaffe, and we go through most of the winners one by one. Then we reveal some light research on the Oscar history of the Palme d’Or, standing ovations throughout this and previous festivals, and some cool facts from the internet about this year’s Cannes slate. Then we react to the receptions of 11 more Cannes films of interest to us and our search for future Oscar winners. This particular episode is a shameless act of aggregation as we did not attend the festival. But it’s still a lot of fun to gather all of the critical and audience reception numbers and quotes and tweets and red carpet memes and acquisition news and then react to it all through an Oscars lens. Soooo… sorry, we’re not sorry, especially when we can trust a few friends of the show throughout this presentation. Sorry for some audio tics in this episode. AM’s microphone reverted to an older setting, and we have to fix it, hopefully for the next show. But other than a few little dips & raises in volume, hopefully it doesn’t mess with you too much. Otherwise, we did end the episode with a few quickie reviews to Space Jam: A New Legacy and Pig. We’ll be returning to our own movie reviewing again soon as we head into late July and August, including some upcoming releases stateside from the Cannes film festival. So do stay tuned for more Oscar Profiles. We’ll also be on the lookout for the fall film festival announcements from Venice, TIFF, and New York, the latter of which we attend regularly each year. So go back to our reviews from the spring festivals of Tribeca and AFI DOCS and look forward to our coverage of NY, etc this fall on upcoming episodes of Oscar Race Checkpoint. Where To Find Our Work/LEAVE US 5* REVIEWS! - 1:02:28 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:03:32 Netflix re-enters the Animated Feature Oscar conversation with another Sony collaboration in Vivo with music by Lin Manuel Miranda, and we got a teaser AND a full song release to review. Then we can finally further the conversation on Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, a film we were very worried about during our Year In Preview series. There’s hope to be had with this first trailer, as well as a few lingering red flags. We’re able to dive into a couple of popular film in Malignant from James Wan and Jackass Forever with Steve-O and Johnny Knoxville. So we’re able to revisit WB’s horror library and our goofy high school / college days of watching Jackass in these discussions, and then we end this trailer segment with another Oscar contender as we finally get a trailer for Blue Bayou, the polarizing Un Certain Regard Cannes entry that some respected pundits and predictors believe should contender come March. This Oscar Race Checkpoint furthers what has become quite the preview season as we cover the first wave of Toronto Film Festival announcements. We begin by refreshing you on 5 films that we previewed back in the spring including Last Night In Soho, Dear Evan Hansen, Belfast, The Guilty, and The Starling. Then we introduce you to another 13+ notable gala and special presentations at TIFF that caught our attention. These films include the closing night gala for One Second from China, Official Competition starring Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, a long anticipated The Electrical Life of Louis Wain about a cat painting artiste played by Benedict Cumberbatch, The Madwoman’s Ball from Melanie Laurent, All Your Puny Sorrows featuring Alison Pill, Jack Lowden’s Benediction, Riz Ahmed’s Encounter, Dan Stevens in I’m Your Man, Naomi Watts in Lakewood, Night Raiders from Danis Goulet, Ben Foster in Barry Levinson’s boxing drama The Survivor, and what we hope will be a star showcase for Olivia Munn in Violet. Finally, and as promised, we check in with some early Vegas betting odds for Best Picture and Best Actor. We discuss which lines have value, and which ones definitely do not. We talk about which lines are offered, and which are conspicuously left out of the betting. Plus, we talk about some recent history of what these lines might mean to our futures and our wallets. Do let us know what you think about any of the films we previewed or any of the lines we’ve discussed in this Oscar Race Checkpoint. Where to Find Us/LEAVE US A 5* REVIEW! - 54:56 What’s Next/Words of Wisdom - 55:31 We each went back to the movies and began this Oscar Race Checkpoint by validating our concerns for M. Night Shyamalan’s Old. Some strong performances save it from complete condemnation, but it’s not something we’ll make the cast for in terms of the Oscars conversation. On the flipside, Also Mike does tout a new film for our hallowed trophy, and it’s in the documentary category as he reviews Val, heading to Amazon Prime on 8/6. After our reviews, we enter back into some more previews and react to the new trailers for Dune, Official Competition, and Language Lessons. Here, we discuss Dune’s relationship to a certain galaxy far, far away. Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas make us laugh, while Natalie Morales may have a tougher time getting us to break up after Mark Duplass has become an M1 horror phobia since the Creep films. As for our news segment, we begin with a brief discussion on A24 and its merger talks before covering some impactful covid news on The Green Knight. We then discuss some viewership and subscription reports from HBO MAX and Netflix before diving into the New York Film Festival announcement about it’s opening night film, The Tragedy of Macbeth. Finally, we end our ORC with a fun speculation and horror movie segment about the poster for Jordan Peele’s Nope and the potential new Exorcist reboot from David Gordon Green. Do let us know your thoughts on any of the topics we discussed in this episode. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are at Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. Where To Find Our Work/LEAVE US 5* REVIEWS! - 1:19:22 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:20:08 We react to the breaking news about a lawsuit between Scarlett Johansson & Disney over her backend Black Widow money. Then we dive into some huge Oscar trailer for House of Gucci and King Richard. Are we getting our first looks at some future Oscar winners? Or will these films be overstuffed and overwrought? Then we continue to break down some intriguing new trailers for The Card Counter, Lamb, The Night House, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Vivo. Who does Oscar Isaac remind us of with his haircut in Paul Schrader’s latest? How inappropriate and crude are we willing to get in our speculation over Lamb? What is a giallo? Is Night House a giallo? And how did a Ghostbusters: Afterlife trailer review start Rudd War I? It’s perhaps our most fun trailer thoughts segment of the summer, and you don’t want to miss it. We otherwise dive into the lineup for the Venice Film Festival. Unfortunately, history repeats itself with some Venezia demographics, and we must criticize them once again because their recent history has been so impactful to the Oscars, etc. With that being said, we’re able to dissect their lineup and update you on some films we’ve already introduced like The Power of the Dog from Jane Campion, Pedro Almodovar’s Madres Paralelas, Official Competition, The Card Counter, and Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in Spencer. Then we introduce you to a host of new entries to the season like Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter, Kate Hudson in Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon, and Tim Roth in Sundown. The TIFF announcements continue as we further our previews of A24’s The Humans with Steven Yeun, we introduce The Good House with Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline, and Wolf with a shirtless George MacKay. Then we talk about the overall film release and awards season calendars. Clayton Davis and company reported on some films that will not be hitting screens until 2022, and we begrudgingly must take them off our oscar lists. We continue our story from the last episode about the new Exorcist trilogy that’ll begin in 2022 from Universal, and we update you on the awards season schedule. As always, we want to hear your thoughts on anything we discussed in this episode. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are at Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. Because let’s face it. We, like many of you, have a great many questions about medieval literature and why in the fuck, Dev Patel’s character does what he does in this story. The answers may frighten us, but we do come to some conclusions in this episode that are unlike anything else we’ve seen or read about this movie. As always, make sure to seek out Amanda’s channel, Swell Entertainment on Youtube, and enjoy her new podcast: Swell Shenanigans. You can also follow her at luvu2golka on Twitter and Instagram. She’s one of our favorite guests for a reason, and although we don’t make many demands of you, this is one. This is an Oscars Profile movie review episode on The Green Knight, which means we begin with a non-spoiler section to introduce the film, discuss our movie watching experiences, and give you our spoiler free reviews of the performances, production values, and yes, some overall thoughts on the story, which to be fair, are shorter thoughts than usual because we desperately need to get into spoilers on this one ASAFP. So after minute 17, and our spoiler warning, we jump into a spoiler filled discussion on what in the actual fuck happened in The Green Knight, both in its literary and cinematic forms. Amanda helps us out in the former, and we wonder which version of the story would have better served the film. We also thoroughly breakdown the Dev Patel character, the baffling decisions made by and for him, and then dive into a what it all means conversation that gets down and dirty. In other words, this is most definitely a NSFW episode that you should keep from your kids until they are much much older. Regardless of our differing opinions, we unite in an immature sense of humor and laugh like fools. So as always, we’re open to your thoughts. We’re Mike, Mike, & Oscar, and we’re making awards season year round, without the stuffiness. Thank you! And do stay safe, everybody.

Cinemacon fallout leads into a discussion on Venom 2 & Bond 25. Where To Find Our Work/LEAVE US 5* REVIEWS! - 1:00:25 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:01:30 We open the show with some discussion of the release date rumors coming out of Cinemacon, and ya know, our concerns and our hopes for the box office. There’s talk on Venom: Let There Be Carnage, No Time To Die, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and we’ll have a box office update a segment later in the show. In between, we break down the Netflix schedule release calendar. Do their presumed contenders fall off? Can some festival titles rise up? What do the release dates tell us about Netflix and their Oscar slate? Plus, we talk about how the streaming giant has begun their own convention before ending the segment with a look at the first Best International Film selection, Submersible out of Ecuador. Now I wish our trailer review segments could be as dignified as the films we preview. But you probably wouldn’t listen to us if they were. So we end the episode with many a laugh riot and a giggle fit concerning the otherwise serious trailers for Spencer, The Power of the Dog, and The Starling. Then we must dive into a longer break down of the loaded first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, including a spoiler section to end the episode. As always, we want to hear your thoughts. 02 Sep 2021Candyman Review + Is Streaming Now Driving Production? - ORC 9/2/2101:24:15
A Candyman review ends the episode. But to begin, we react to 7 new trailers including Mass & Parallel Mothers, there’s a final preview for Venice and Telluride, & we cover news on Netflix, the Golden Globes, and the box office. Where To Find Our Work/LEAVE US 5* REVIEWS! - 1:22:15 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:23:00 We end the episode with a 25 minute review of Candyman, and we break halfway for a spoiler section. So let’s all agree not to summon anything. Otherwise, we have a fully loaded Oscar Race Checkpoint for the first hour of the show, beginning with 7 trailer reviews including our hopes for Penelope Cruz in Parallel Mothers, our reverence for Ann Dowd and Mass, our eyesight problems regarding Malignant, the hints from DC Fandome, the final look at No Time To Die, a tease for The Guilty, and a musical education via The Velvet Underground. Some real time reactions to the premiere of Almodovar’s Parallel Mothers pop up just in the nick of time as we transition to a few final previews of Venice & Telluride. The former released its schedule while the latter finally released its lineup. So we’ll continue to cover the fall festivals in forthcoming shows. There’s a progress report from the HFPA, and we all should be skeptical. The 2022-23 Oscars get some familiar auteurs back in the ring with Francis Ford Coppola and another project from Paul Schrader. Netflix acquired another huge horror IP with Elsie Fisher’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre and another potential animated feature contender. Then we cover the box office before our review of Candyman. Telluride & Venice buzz dominates our second half of the show. We otherwise discuss potential changes to the Oscars broadcast and the ever changing release date calendar in the first half. Where To Find Our Work/LEAVE US 5* REVIEWS! - 1:01:30 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:02:28 The Academy Board of Governors are rumored to discuss potential changes to their broadcast next month, including the presentation of several categories during commercial breaks and new points of emphasis that will aim to celebrate the year of film. So we cannot help but speculate about what these rumors mean, our diagnosis of the issues, and we even evolve some of our remedies for how we would improve the broadcast. Then we continue to discuss the Fall Film Release Calendar and complete the first half with a rundown of the rest of 2021’s movie schedule, including both theatrical and streaming. But first, we must dive into why Paramount shifted their slate of Top Gun, Mission Impossible 7, and Jackass Forever towards 2022, and why Sony shifted Venom back up to the first week of October and Ghostbusters: Afterlife further into November. A Don’t Look Up trailer review transitions us into another huge preview segment as we react to the Telluride and Venice Film Festivals. So as the episode title indicates, this will be divisive. Kristen Stewart, Oscar Isaac & Jessica Chastain, and the cast of Dune light the red carpets of Venice on fire, film Critics attending the festivals got as hyped up as we’ve ever seen them, and we review some first looks at Belfast and C’mon C’mon. So find out how we’re taking in all the buzz as we react to all the proclaimed frontrunners like Stewart and Smith and Dune, and as we compile it all for you in a quick hitting half hour. When are we too bullish? Where are we too skeptical? Let us know your read on the fall festival season.
