13 Apr 2018Sam Vincent: 'Mr. Basketball', Michigan State star, NBA Champion and Global Coach - AIR08301:26:15

Send Adam a text message.

'Mr. Basketball', Michigan State star, NBA Champion and Global Coach, Sam Vincent.

As a youngster, Sam Vincent witnessed intense cross-town high-school basketball battles between his older brother, Jay, and Magic Johnson. A few years later, Jay and Earvin joined forces at Michigan State University, winning the 1979 National Championship against Larry Bird - Sam's future teammate in the NBA.

Sam led Eastern High School to the 1980 State Championship. He was named Michigan's first 'Mr. Basketball'. Following in the footsteps of Jay and Magic, Sam attended Michigan State and was a four-year standout with the Spartans. He played in the 1981 McDonald's High School All-American game against Michael Jordan.

As a rookie, Sam was a member of the 1986 Boston Celtics - arguably, the greatest team of all-time. We discuss his memories of that season and some of the practice battles at Hellenic College.

Prior to the 1988 season, Sam was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics, where he played 43 games. As the trade deadline neared, the Sonics dealt Sam to the Chicago Bulls - where he'd reunite with Michael Jordan - and his on-court production increased significantly. We talk about some of his fondest off-court memories from that time, plus some great games he played in as a member of the Bulls.

In mid-June of 1989, the Orlando Magic selected Sam in the NBA Expansion Draft. He was an original member of the franchise and played with the team for three seasons. Injury led to Sam's exit from the NBA after the 1992 season. He played for a season in Europe, before embarking on a post-playing career - overseas and within the USA - that is as varied as it is impressive.

Sam details his extensive travels and successes as a Global Coach. The breadth of his accomplishments is remarkable. Among many achievements, Sam has coached national teams in South Africa and Nigeria. He guided the Mobile Revelers to the 2003 NBA D-League Championship. In 2004, he coached the Nigerian women's team in the Olympics Games. In 2007, Sam was an assistant coach with the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, before getting a call from Michael Jordan to coach the Charlotte Bobcats.

Sam talks about his most-recent coaching experiences, clears up misconceptions stemming from his exit as Charlotte coach and discusses his love for promoting the game of basketball globally.

- Chicago at New York: January 5, 1985

- NBA regular season - January 24 through February 7, 1985

- Insightful minutiae, all but lost to the annals of basketball history

In this episode, we break down the thirty-fourth game of MJ's professional career. We were fortunate to have access to the game DVD, giving us plenty of topics and moments to talk about. The Bulls were hoping to remain above .500 for the season, whilst the Knicks - losers of eight of their last nine games - had dropped six straight. Bernard King entered the game averaging 40 points a contest, in his past five outings.

Next, we discuss numerous happenings from the next 15-day block of the 1984-85 NBA season. The Chicago Bulls played seven games in this span – three wins and four losses.

We chat about one of the most unusual personnel moves of the era. The Atlanta Hawks - without three of their guards - were forced to activate one of their TV commentators to the playing roster! We also talk about the NBA's best-performing players - including Larry Bird's back-to-back buzzer-beaters - milestones reached and much more.

This episode continues our coverage of the 1984-85 NBA season. We encourage your interaction. 16 Jun 2015Terence Stansbury: Temple University Hall of Famer, NBA & European veteran - AIR05801:24:29

Send Adam a text message.

Temple University Hall of Famer, NBA & European veteran, Terence Stansbury.

We discuss the unique origin of Terence’s high school basketball career. He mentions some of the players he admired, including Julius Erving, Walt Frazier, Pete Maravich, Wilt Chamberlain and Joe Bryant.

Terence starred at Temple, leading his Owls to the 1984 NCAA Tournament. At that Tourney, he hit a game-winning buzzer-beater, to defeat the might of St. John’s, led by Chris Mullin, Bill Wennington & Mark Jackson. That victory setup the last game of Terence’s college career, against Michael Jordan and the North Carolina Tar Heels. We discuss both games – the latter, Stansbury more than held his own, against Jordan.

Stansbury trialed for Team USA’s 1983 Pan-American Games squad, then, in 1984, was one of the select group, invited to participate in Team USA’s Olympic Trials. Terence details great moments from both experiences, including his first (in person) meeting with Charles Barkley and rooming with another future Hall of Famer, John Stockton.

We chat about the famous 1984 NBA Draft, where the Dallas Mavericks selected Terence with the 15th overall pick. We cover his brief, yet intriguing, tenure with the Mavs, before the trade that sent him to the Indiana Pacers, where he played two of his three NBA seasons.

One of the Google searches that I did, whilst researching Terence’s career, led to this photo of Paul Mokeski. As luck would have it, there’s a classic story behind this, that began with a foul, and ended, many years later, close to five thousand miles away.

Terence remembers former teammate, Dwayne McClain, a guy with links to my home country of Australia. They were teammates during the 1986 NBA season. The ‘D-Train’ was a standout at Villanova University, later, starring in the National Basketball League.

It’s impossible to chat with Terence Stansbury and not talk about his three-consecutive, third-place finishes in the Slam Dunk Competition (1985 | 1986 | 1987). I ask Terence about the origin of his famous ‘Statue of Liberty 360′ jam and the involvement of his family and friends, in the 1985 and 1986 contests, particularly.

We also discuss the circumstances behind Terence’s trade to Seattle. After the 1987 season, Terence briefly played in the Continental Basketball Association, before being presented with an opportunity to play in Europe (early 1988). From there, he played at the highest l

- Never-before-told accounts of Michael Jordan's rookie NBA season
- Insightful minutiae, all but lost to the annals of basketball history

The ultimate episode of #NB85. We finish our series with an in-depth interview, inviting Bill Hazen on the show, to talk about his experiences covering the Chicago Bulls (1983-85). Bill was the play-by-play man for more than 50 of Michael Jordan's rookie games.

Hazen was born and raised in Chicago. We briefly discuss the city's history of professional basketball; leading to the expansion Bulls' entry, in the NBA's 1966-67 season.

You'll hear some amazing accounts of Michael Jordan's first season in the NBA. Hazen was in attendance at Angel Guardian Gym - the Bulls' practice facility for Jordan's rookie season - he watched Michael shake hands with new coach, Kevin Loughery, before training camp had even commenced.

We reminisce about some of the great moments during Jordan's first season as a pro, including this remarkable piece of commentary that Bill exclaimed, in November, 1984.

Another stellar piece of Bill's commentary, was later used in the iconic advertising campaign, 'America's Game / NBA Action: It's FANtastic'.

We also discuss Bill's early use of computer technology to prepare for games, the dismantling of numerous personnel - coaches, executives and broadcasters - following the 1985 season, Bill's production company and much more.

This episode concludes our coverage of the 1984-85 NBA season. Thanks for taking the time to listen to the series. If you enjoyed the content, please share it with your friends!

Adam & Aaron celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Jordan's second season in the National Basketball Association. This episode covers:

- NBA regular season - November 9 through 23, 1985

- Insightful minutiae, all but lost to the annals of basketball history

In this episode, we discuss numerous happenings from the second 15-day block of the 1985-86 NBA season. The Chicago Bulls played eight games in this span – three wins and five losses.

We also talk about the role that Michael Jordan played, helping the North Carolina Tar Heels, secure the signature of Scott Williams (future three-time NBA Champion).

Further, we discuss the Lakers' best start to a season since the franchise moved to Los Angeles in 1960, Quintin Dailey's return to playing duty, Alex English's 54-point explosion versus Houston, Xavier McDaniel's cameo in (1992 movie) Singles and much more.

My friend, Mike Fraler, host of Forgotten Maverick (now Mavs Archives) invited me on his show.

We discuss how our podcasts came to be and reminisce about our love of NBA history. I also discuss my 1994 and 1995 trips to the USA, and how luck wasn’t on my side – both times I visited the States, Michael Jordan was in the midst of his first retirement. Fancy some NBA trivia? Listen in and test your knowledge against mine.

As the name of Mike's podcast cleverly suggests, he chats with Dallas Mavericks players of years gone by. Mike’s twin brother, Jeff, has his own NBA-history podcast: Forgotten Lakers, Are you sensing a theme? If you enjoy my podcast, you’ll certainly enjoy Mike's and Jeff’s.

- Off-season news, notes and quotes

- 1985 NBA Draft

- Chicago Bulls 1985-86 training camp and preseason games

- Insightful minutiae, all but lost to the annals of basketball history

We're back with a new series. Starting mid-June, 1985, we discuss a wide array of interesting topics and happenings, from the NBA's off-season.

We chat about the Chicago Bulls' moves to sign a new head coach, in the wake of Kevin Loughery's firing. We cover the 1985 NBA Draft and the multitude of deals that Chicago made, to secure Charles Oakley's arrival and the team's future.

You'll learn about the 'Schlitz Malt Liquor Summer Basketball League', hosted at Chicago State University, in late June and early July, 1985. Professional players who took part, included Michael Jordan, Isiah Thomas, Reggie Theus, Terry Cummings, Orlando Woolridge & Maurice Cheeks.

We also talk about the burgeoning career of (Washington Bullets draftee) Manute Bol. The Chicago Tribune ran a great feature on Bol, covering his then-stint with the United States Basketball League, where he was averaging an astonishing 12 blocks per game.

In late July, 1985, the University of Illinois at Chicago, hosted an NBA Rookie Summer League, featuring the Bulls, Hawks, Cavaliers, Pistons, Pacers & Bucks. The teams played a series of exhibitions, open to the public. Players involved - referred to as rookies, free agents and fringe pros - included Spud Webb, Joe Dumars, Kevin Willis, Tony Campbell, Ron Anderson, Antoine Carr, Terence Stansbury & Randy Breuer.

To encourage camaraderie and team unity, the Bulls held their (1985-86) preseason training camp at Beloit College, Wisconsin. Aside from basketball, Michael Jordan served as an honorary official (coin toss) at the Beloit-Cornell football game.

We detail the Bulls' interest in (free agent) Kyle Macy and the formerly-retired Billy McKinney. Plus, Spencer Haywood made a comeback attempt - attending training camp with the Pistons - two seasons removed from his last NBA game.

We recap Chicago's 1985-86 preseason games. They were the only team without a win.

Adam & Aaron celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Jordan's second season in the National Basketball Association. This episode covers:

- NBA regular season - January 23 through February 6, 1986

- Insightful minutiae, all but lost to the annals of basketball history

In this episode, we discuss numerous happenings from the next 15-day block of the 1985-86 NBA season. The Chicago Bulls played eight games in this span – two wins and six losses.

The Michael Jordan-less Chicago Bulls were struggling to keep its head above water. Could they weather the storm, prior to the on-court return of the franchise cornerstone? The Bulls had some great individual performers - the talented (rookie) Charles Oakley; the sporadic brilliance of (troubled) Quintin Dailey; and ageing star, George Gervin, to name a few - yet couldn't string together more than three-consecutive wins since Jordan injured himself in just the third game of the season.

In other NBA news, the Los Angeles Clippers had their first win - since moving from San Diego - over the cross-town Los Angeles Lakers. On the topic of historical achievements, Manute Bol recorded an astonishing (equal career-high) 15 blocks, in his Washington Bullets' win versus the Atlanta Hawks.

Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics continued to steamroll opponents, en route to a 13-game winning streak; remarkably, it wouldn't be the longest such streak the team enjoyed during this season. Tune in to hear this and plenty more, as we uncover some hidden gems from the NBA's golden era.

Last week marked the 45th anniversary of Game 5 (3OT) of the 1976 NBA Finals. Phoenix Suns at Boston Celtics. It's often called The Greatest Game Ever Played.

Let's welcome back legendary Basketball Hall of Famer, Bob Ryan. Plus, my good pal from Phoenix (who lives in Los Angeles) - Suns Super Fan - Adam Beechen. We discuss the iconic game, the series in general and numerous other topics from NBA history.

Though it was the early hours of June 5th here in Australia, for Bob and Adam, our conversation was held on the afternoon of June 4th in the USA – 45 years to the day since the game was played. Bob covered the 1976 Finals for The Boston Globe. He shares wonderful anecdotes from his vantage point at the famed Boston Garden. Adam was seven years of age and shares his recollections of the '76 Finals and the impact they would have on his life. Me? Well, I was only 11 months, 21 days old. The first I learnt about the series was when I watched the excellent NBAE VHS, Awesome Endings, circa 1990.

Adam first appeared on the podcast in 2016. We released an episode titled ‘Phoenix Rising - Suns: 1968-69 through 1993 NBA Finals'. We covered the evolution of the Phoenix Suns. This episode is a terrific complement to that conversation.

Adam & Aaron celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Jordan's second season in the National Basketball Association. This episode covers:

- NBA regular season - November 24 through December 8, 1985

- Insightful minutiae, all but lost to the annals of basketball history

In this episode, we discuss numerous happenings from the next 15-day block of the 1985-86 NBA season. The Chicago Bulls played nine games (all on the road) in this span – two wins and seven losses. 18 of the Bulls' first 24 games, were away from home.

We chat about the increased productivity of Chicago's Quintin Dailey. His scoring ability was needed more than ever, with Michael Jordan still on the sidelines. Never short of a post-game quote, Dailey had choice words about the Washington Bullets' Darren Daye, after an incident with the Bulls' John Paxson.

We also talk about the Boston Celtics' tremendous early-season form. The team's nine-game win streak was broken by the visiting Portland Trail Blazers - it would be the Celtics' sole regular-season loss at home.

Stan Albeck (Chicago coach) extraordinarily asked permission from his regular starters, to have his four former-Spurs players, in the starting lineup, for the Bulls' game at San Antonio. It worked beautifully, with each of the ex-Spurs having good performances.

Further, we discuss some scoring milestones. The Denver Nuggets' Alex English racked up 15,000 career points, whilst the Cleveland Cavaliers' World B. Free, surpassed 16,000 for his career.

This episode continues our coverage of the 1985-86 NBA season. We encourage your interaction. Feel free to suggest specific games, moments and events from within the season, for us to cover in future episodes of the series. Thanks for taking the time to listen to the show. Send Adam a text message.

My special guest is three-time NBA Champion of the Chicago Bulls, Bill Wennington. Bill was the first guest to appear on my podcast way back in 2012. A big thanks to another great friend of the show, Steve Kashul, for helping me reconnect with Bill.

This conversation was recorded after episode four of the The Last Dance aired. We discuss numerous topics including the Bulls’ preseason trip to France in 1997, Bill’s relationship with (GM) Jerry Krause, some Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman memories, plus, just how much handycam footage does Bill have?

16 Jan 2015Reflections from Inside - Looking back on NBA History - AIR05001:25:54

Send Adam a text message.

Thank you for being a part of my podcast journey. We've reached 50 episodes of 'In all Airness'. Here's to plenty more, as we kick-off 2015. A special thanks to my beautiful wife, Lisa, for being so understanding and accommodating of my passion for the podcast.

Thanks, too, Aaron - co-hosting 10 of the episodes (and at least - as I type this - a further 16 'NB85' episodes, too). I couldn't ask for a greater guy to have along for the ride. A huge tip of the hat to Luke - my brother; we've watched and played, countless hours of basketball throughout the 1990s & 2000s - and close friends, Todd & Reece - all advocates of the show who share a love for the game of basketball.

Of course, this show would be nothing without two crucial components - you, the listener, and the guests themselves. I won't single anyone out, however, each and every one of you contribute; allowing the podcast to occupy its own unique, online home. If you enjoy the show, please tell your friends about it. That's the best way for the podcast to grow.

I'll round out my appreciation, with a special thanks to Paul and the National Basketball Retired Players Association. I'm excited for what our future collaborations will bring.

To those who have asked, my regular interviews with great guests, will certainly continue - once the 'NB85' series concludes.

Now, on to the show. In this special episode, I'm joined by Aaron & Adam. We chat about how we first fell in love with the NBA & I detail how the podcast originated. We discuss the high-profile guests, including fellow Australians, Andrew Gaze, Luc Longley & Mark Bradtke, as well as USA greats such as Christian Laettner, Kenny Anderson and many more - plus the numerous topic-based episodes, too.

Watch the Google Hangout - recorded live on September 25, 2014 - or, should you prefer the audio-only version (via your podcast app of choice), you'll hear an edited version of the conversation - with better sound quality.

If you view the video, links for each and every podcast episode will appear on screen - as they are mentioned - for your convenience.

27 Apr 2018Cheryl Raye-Stout: Chicago sports-radio pioneer and broadcasting veteran - AIR08401:02:15

Send Adam a text message.

Chicago sports-radio pioneer and broadcasting veteran, Cheryl Raye-Stout.

As a young girl, Cheryl was taught the nuances of baseball, by her maternal grandfather. That helped foster her love of sports and set the path for what would be - and still is - a pioneering career in Chicago sports radio.

Cheryl talks about the state of the Chicago Bulls, pre-Michael Jordan. We discuss her recollection of when she first heard Jordan's name. This was well before Michael arrived in Chicago. Cheryl, and the city-at-large, were eager followers of college basketball. We chat about Jordan's immediate impact on the Bulls, plus, Cheryl details memories of his (1980s) teammates, Dave Corzine and Charles Oakley.

We chat about the highs of WMAQ (AM-670) obtaining the rights to broadcast Chicago Bulls games on radio, coupled with the lows the station would soon experience, after recently-minted Rookie of the Year, Michael Jordan, broke his foot on October 29, 1985.

It may surprise some people, however, Michael Jordan was perhaps the NBA's most-accessible star in the 1980s and (early) 1990s. Cheryl talks about the access she had to arguably, the game's most-electrifying performer - including night sessions at Bulls' training camp, when nary a reporter was in sight. We talk about the Bulls' incredible run of six titles in eight years and some of Cheryl's fondest memories from those championship runs.

Cheryl recounts the biggest news stories she broke in the 1990s. Both, not surprisingly, involved Michael Jeffrey Jordan. The first, Michael's decision to play baseball. Second, Jordan's return to the NBA ("I'm back"). The behind-the-scenes details of how Cheryl uncovered the stories are nothing short of fascinating.

Learn more about all of the above, discover the story behind a unique Michael Jordan autograph Cheryl received, plus, hear a couple of classic Dennis Rodman anecdotes. If you love NBA history, this is a conversation you will not want to miss.

Send Adam a text message.

I’m very pleased to welcome Terry Davis (10-year NBA veteran). All going to plan, Terry will join the show at a future date for a deep dive on his life in basketball.

Here, Terry reflects on his NBA return and pivotal role in the debut of Washington’s MCI Center, early in the 1998 NBA season. Shout-out to great friend of the show, Jim McIlvaine, whose VHS tape of the game – his Sonics played against Terry’s Wizards – is the source audio you’ll hear during the episode.

Normally, I’d preface a conversation with facts and figures about my guest. However, in this format, it’s best to listen and learn as the episode unfolds.

10 Apr 2020ESPN's The Last Dance (Guests: Nate Bellamy and Nigel Miguel) - AIR09900:41:07

Send Adam a text message.

Let's welcome Nate Bellamy Jr. and Nigel Miguel back to the show. They joined me on episode 75 to discuss Space Jam’s 20th anniversary. Prior to that, Nigel was my guest for episode 68. I encourage you to check out those great episodes, too.

Today, we’re chatting about ESPN's highly anticipated, 10-part documentary series, The Last Dance. Its focus is Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls’ 1998 season.

For the context of this podcast chat, Nigel’s relationship with MJ goes way back to 1981 when they were both McDonald’s HS All-Americans. Nate met MJ on the set of the TV commercial, Hare Jordan, in September, 1991. Nate and Nigel share great insight and reflect on their experiences with Jordan; ones that can only come from knowing him for so many years.

Thanks to those of you on Twitter who offered up questions or comments about the series that I could pose to Nate and Nigel. They respond to three listener submissions: @andgar923, @Steve_Koura and @OOffenseman.

NBRPA Vice President, Marketing & Communications, Paul Corliss.

The National Basketball Retired Players Association, was founded in 1992 by NBA luminaries, Dave DeBusschere, Dave Bing, Archie Clark, Dave Cowens and Oscar Robertson. The NBRPA is a non-profit association comprised of former professional basketball players (NBA, ABA, Harlem Globetrotters, and WNBA). It is the only alumni association of its kind, supported directly by the NBA and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA).

We cover Paul's career as a sports writer, after he graduated from college. He then worked at NASCAR and the NFL for the best part of ten years, before commencing his current role in 2011, alongside CEO Arnie Fielkow.

We chat about the origins of the NBRPA and the wide array of (quoted from their website) 'programs, services and benefits designed to help retired basketball players and their families successfully navigate life after the game'.

Paul talks about the NBRPA's unprecedented success at the 2015 All-Star Weekend. The Legends of Basketball participated in community-based projects, celebrated Black History Month and conducted numerous radio and on-air television interviews - in conjunction with NBA TV - that will air over the coming months.

This is a perfect opportunity to learn more about the NBRPA. We even have time to discuss some of Paul's greatest memories of working with Magic Johnson, Bill Walton, Spencer Haywood, Jalen Rose, Teresa Weatherspoon, Ralph Sampson, Tiny Archibald and many other Legends of Basketball.

30 May 2016Michael Jordan's second NBA season - January 8 through 22, 1986 - NB86-800:36:01

Send Adam a text message.

Adam & Aaron celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Jordan's second season in the National Basketball Association. This episode covers:

- NBA regular season - January 8 through 22, 1986

- Insightful minutiae, all but lost to the annals of basketball history

In this episode, we discuss numerous happenings from the next 15-day block of the 1985-86 NBA season. The Chicago Bulls played six games in this span – one win and five losses.

We chat about the Bulls' continued struggle to remain competitive, in the absence of (still injured) Michael Jordan. Conversely, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers - led by superstars, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson - seemed headed for a would-be rematch of the previous season's NBA Finals.

In other NBA news, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar became the first player to surpass 34,000 career points. Meanwhile, the rivalry between Jawann Oldham and Manute Bol, led to a frightening brawl at Chicago Stadium. That fracas offset another (video) tidbit that was highlighted on (NBA Entertainment's) Awesome Endings.

This episode continues our coverage of the 1985-86 NBA season. We encourage your interaction. Feel free to suggest specific games, moments and events from within the season, for us to cover in future episodes of the series. Thanks for taking the time to listen to the show. 21 Mar 2016Nigel Miguel: High School All-American, NIT Champion, film producer & actor - AIR06801:02:47

Send Adam a text message.

High School All-American, NIT Champion, Film Producer & Actor, Nigel Miguel. As a child, Nigel moved from Central America to California. We talk about his role models as a youngster, before transitioning into his high-school career, where, as a senior, he led his team to a 19-5 record, en route to winning the Del Rey League Championship. He was named a 1981 McDonald’s All-American, in the famous class that included Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing and Chris Mullin. He discusses the tremendous opportunities that afforded him, including a crucial role in the USA’s gold-medal win at the 1981 Albert Schweitzer Tournament (often referred to as the Mini-Basketball World Cup, or Junior Olympics).

Nigel played four seasons at UCLA. As a freshman, he was teammates with future Utah Jazz great – and friend of the show – Mark Eaton. In his sophomore season, Nigel’s Bruins made it the NCAA Tournament. He talks about the joy of making it to the tournament, coupled with the disappointment of a first-game exit.

In his junior and senior years, Nigel paired with all-time great, Reggie Miller. Prior to his last season with the team, Walt Hazzard – a player on John Wooden’s first NCAA Championship team – took the helm as UCLA coach. We discuss his lasting impact on Nigel and the team.. Miguel ended his Bruins career in style, scoring an equal game-high, 18 points, as UCLA won the 1985 NIT Championship, at the famed Madison Square Garden.

We talk about the lead-up to the 1985 NBA Draft, including team interviews that Nigel undertook, and, his one-on-one workout with the legendary Jerry West, on the court at the Great Western Forum.

After being the last player cut from the New Jersey Nets’ training camp, Nigel signed with Wisconsin’s new CBA franchise, the La Crosse Catbirds. He talks about his fondness for that season, where he was named to the league’s All-Rookie team, averaging more than 17 points per game. Miguel was runner-up to future NBA All-Star, Michael Adams, for Rookie of the Year. The Catbirds made it to the 1986 CBA Championship series, before losing out to (former podcast guest) Ed Nealy and his Tampa Bay Thrillers.

Continued interest from the New Jersey Nets (and L.A. Lakers), led to Nigel’s return to (Nets) training camp, in anticipation of a roster spot for the 1986-87 NBA season. He talks about the seemingly-innocuous ‘tweak’ of his ankle, during a lead-up game. That quickly led to an inner-monologue: “My foot is on the ground…but I don’t feel anything”. He’d fractured his heel bo

09 Jul 2019Derrick Gervin: HS great, UTSA star, NBA player and European standout - AIR09501:07:14

Send Adam a text message.

High school great, University of Texas at San Antonio star, NBA player and European standout, Derrick Gervin.

Derrick Gervin is a Detroit native. He starred at Martin Luther King High School in his home state of Michigan. Twice, he was named to Detroit's All-Public School League first team. Following high school, Gervin moved cross country to play at a college where his jersey is one of just two to have ever been retired to the rafters - the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Coincidentally, as Derrick continued to hone his skills at college, his older brother - future Hall of Famer, George Gervin (The Iceman) - was lighting up the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs.

Leaving college after his junior season, Derrick was selected in the 1985 NBA Draft, before eventually travelling overseas to star in Europe. He would return to the USA and achieve his dream of playing in the NBA. We cover this and much more in a wide-ranging conversation.

Derrick is a great story teller and shares some fantastic memories from his life in basketball. Check out his show: We Got Next (formerly D. Gerv and Big Mo). They have had a stellar list of guests, including Artis Gilmore, George Gervin and Mike Gminski to name a few.

A slight correction - I inadvertently refer to Derrick’s junior season as his senior year.

For context, this chat was recorded just prior to the madness of 2019 NBA Free Agency.

People mentioned in this episode, include: Antoine Carr, Bill Fitch, Chris Morris, Drazen Petrovic, Flip Saunders, Joe Dumars, Joe Kleine, Leon Wood, Julius Erving, Wes Matthews and Terry Catledge.

Send Adam a text message.

Three-time NBL Champion, four-time Australian Olympian and NBA player, Mark Bradtke. Mark talks about his entry into competitive basketball and we discuss his quick rise into Australia's basketball elite. We chat about his time at the Australian Institute of Sport and later, playing for the Adelaide 36ers, in Australia's NBL.

We talk about Mark's decision to move interstate, to play for the Melbourne Tigers - joining forces with Andrew Gaze and Lanard Copeland - helping the team win its first NBL title, in 1993. Recently, the Tigers celebrated the 20th Anniversary of that victory and Mark talks about the reunion and special bond he shares with those players and personnel.

We cover Mark's outstanding Olympic career, where he represented Australia on four occasions. Mark talks about his opportunities to attend NBA training camps, plus, his 1997 season on the Philadelphia 76ers roster. He is open and honest about his time in the NBA and offers wonderful insight into the trials and tribulations of the experience.

In 1997, Mark returned home to Australia. We talk about the contrast of leaving a struggling NBA franchise, to resuming his career at home and winning a second NBL title, just months later. We look back at Mark's 2002 MVP season and he also offers his opinion on the current state of basketball in Australia, plus, his future ambitions within the sport.

The conversation is scattered with references to the history of Australian basketball. Aside from his Tigers teammates, we talk about Shane Heal, Luc Longley, Andrew Vlahov and numerous other greats of Mark's era.

31 Mar 2018Mike Jarvis: Legendary high school and NCAA basketball coach - AIR08201:12:26

Send Adam a text message.

Three-time HS State Championship coach, 25-year NCAA veteran and basketball luminary, Mike Jarvis.

Mike Jarvis played on Rindge Technical High School’s 1962 Class A Championship (East Massachusetts) team. Today, he’s a member of the Cambridge High School, Massachusetts Coaches, New England Coaches Association and George Washington University Hall of Fame. However, Mike’s storied life in basketball almost didn’t happen.

As a sophomore at Northeastern University, he quit the team – deciding to work for his father and brother’s fish-and-chip shop – before his brother convinced him to return to Northeastern and apologize to his coach, Dick Dukeshire. Given a second chance, it wasn’t long before Mike knew that his calling was as a basketball coach.

We discuss Mike’s memories of working at Northeastern with future great, Jim Calhoun, followed by a move to Harvard, alongside eight-time NBA Champion of the Boston Celtics, Tom Sanders. Whilst working with Harvard’s varsity team, it wasn’t uncommon for one of Mike’s idols, the all-time great, Red Auerbach, to watch the team practice.

In the mid-1970s, a Jamaican teenager moved to Massachusetts. His name? Patrick Ewing. Mike and Patrick didn’t know it at the time, however, soon enough their lives would be linked forever. A few year later, Mike was appointed head coach of his (high school) alma mater (Cambridge Rindge and Latin School – renamed from Rindge Technical, following a merger). In a stunning run of success, Ewing led Cambridge to three-consecutive state championships (1979-1981), amassing a remarkable 77-1 record during that span. Mike was named Massachusetts HS Coach of the Year in each of those three seasons.

In 1985, Mike commenced a 25-season run (1986-2014) as head coach at Division 1 NCAA schools; Boston University (1985-86–1989-90), George Washington (1990-91–1997-98), St. John’s (1998-99–2003-2004) and Florida Atlantic (2008-09–2013-14). Mike led three schools to the NCAA Tournament, making nine appearances in all. We talk about George Washington’s famed (1993) Sweet Sixteen match-up versus Michigan’s ‘Fab Five’ and the Red Storm’s (1999) journey to the Elite Eight.

Mike shares a great story about the 1981 McDonald’s HS All-American Game, where his son, Mike Jr., played a crucial role as his young assistant. We cover Mike’s post-coaching life and much more.

- Cleveland at Chicago - October 25, 1985

- Detroit at Chicago - October 26, 1985

In this episode, we discuss the first two games of MJ's second season. We were fortunate to have access to the game DVDs, giving us plenty of topics and moments to talk about. - Insightful early-season minutiae, all but lost to the annals of basketball history

In this episode, we discuss numerous happenings from the next 15-day block of the 1984-85 NBA season. We talk about the Bulls' inability to win close games; they would compete with their opposition for 46 minutes, before fading out, late. Our 'NBA Trivia' feature returns in this episode. How strong is your basketball knowledge?! We chat about the NBA's best-performing players, milestones reached - including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar becoming the first player to surpass 32,000 points - and much more.

14 Jan 2016Peter Capolino: Founder, Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Company - AIR06600:44:02

Send Adam a text message.

Founder of Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Company, Peter Capolino.

We talk about Peter's family and its relationship to sports. Peter's father, Sisto - later renamed James, by original founders, Frank Mitchell and Charles Ness - began work with Mitchell & Ness (1917), at just 13 years of age. In the early 1950s, Sisto purchased the business, bringing Peter into the fold.

Peter describes the meticulous research conducted, allowing Mitchell & Ness to produce such high quality, throwback uniforms. Countless hours were spent, combing through archival newspapers, visiting libraries, museums and numerous sporting halls of fame. We discuss the advances in technology and its impact on how the business manufactured apparel.

In 1998, Peter was asked to recreate the history of the NBA (Hardwood Classics), as he had done with MLB's Cooperstown Collection. Peter discusses how he obtained licences for each professional league (including the NFL and NHL), allowing him to produce historically-accurate uniforms.

Just before the turn of the millennium, Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Company's profile exploded, thanks is large part to links with hip-hop and rap artists. Peter shares some stories about Big Boi and André 3000 (Outkast), plus the classic background behind the improbable link between one of his favorite footballers, Sammy Baugh, and Jay Z.

Peter also elaborates on the deal he struck with Michael Jordan, getting the licence and exclusive rights to reproduce MJ's Chicago Bulls jerseys.

Sports Illustrated has published three-prominent features - Baseball Flannels are Hot (1987), Throwback Hip-Hop Style Points (2002) and Rockin' the Retros (2003) - on Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Company.

Peter sold Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Company to Adidas, in 2008 - continuing to work for them, a further four years - and still consults with the company today. This conversation is a must-listen for fans of any major-league sport.

People mentioned in this episode, include: Tom Gola, Connie Simmons, Bill Russell, Rick Barry, Bill Walton, Richie Ashburn, Dale Murphy, Nolan Ryan, Allen Iverson, Wilt Chamberlain, Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig,

23 Jan 2016Mitchell Butler: High School All-American & eight-year NBA veteran - AIR06700:41:48

Send Adam a text message.

High School All-American and eight-year NBA veteran, Mitchell Butler. Mitchell reflects on his outstanding high school career. From 1987 to 1989, he was named the Southern Section Small Schools Division, Player of the Year. In 1988, he led Oakwood to the (Liberty League) Division Championship, notching an astonishing 47 points, 19 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks, in his team's 61-60 victory. We talk about his 1988 quarterfinal game, where he tallied a staggering 50, of his team’s 55 points, in an eight-point win (55-47).

In November of 1988 – in the early-signing period ahead of his senior year at high school - Mitchell signed a letter of intent with the UCLA Bruins. He discusses how heavily he was recruited and what led him to ultimately choose the Bruins.

At the time of recording our conversation, Mitchell ranked sixth all-time, in total games played (130) for the UCLA Bruins. Whilst researching for our chat, I discovered that in the last warm-up game (November, 1989) prior to his freshman season, Butler's Bruins played against my fellow countrymen, the Australian Boomers. UCLA defeated the Aussies, 80-68, at Pauley Pavilion.

Mitchell played in the NCAA Tournament in each of his four seasons. We chat about his freshman campaign, where he made it to the Sweet Sixteen, against Duke - the eventual National Finalists (who lost to UNLV). As a sophomore, Butler started almost every game, before the Bruins were upset by Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. We discuss how close Mitchell came to transferring from UCLA after that second season. UCLA made it to the Elite Eight, in 1992, before losing out to Calbert Cheaney and his Indiana Hoosiers. Though it was a disappointing end to the season, Mitchell won his team's Player Improvement Award, due to his all-around play and positive mental attitude. As a senior, he was named team captain and also enjoyed (arguably) his best season as a Bruin, with 9.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. We cover UCLA's near-upset of Michigan's Fab Five, in a classic, second-round overtime game, in the 1993 NCAA Tournament.

We talk about the circumstances behind Mitchell being overlooked on (1993) draft day, and how he made his way into the league, in the months that followed.

Individually, Mitchell's best NBA seasons were his first two years in the league, averaging almost eight points and three rebounds, in just 19 minutes per game. We cover his first stint with Washington and also, his links to Australian leg

Michael Jordan sought second (and third) opinions on his broken foot, before ultimately making the difficult decision to postpone his would-be (February) comeback plans. His Chicago Bulls were facing the distinct possibility of missing the 1986 NBA Playoffs, if the team's form continued to plummet.

In other NBA news, Alvin Robertson entered rarefied air, becoming just the second player in history (joining Nate Thurmond) to record a quadruple-double, in the San Antonio Spurs' win versus the visiting Phoenix Suns.

Larry Bird continued to star, as his league-leading Celtics became the first team to register forty regular-season wins. Tune in to hear this and plenty more, as we uncover some hidden gems from the NBA’s golden era.

08 Jan 2021Danny Manning: NCAA Champion, NBA All-Star and Sixth Man of the Year - AIR11501:29:51

Send Adam a text message.

Danny Manning has a storied career in basketball. We cover lots of topics, including his formative years of watching and learning the game, his family’s move to Kansas where he starred for the Jayhawks in college and ultimately was selected first-overall pick of the 1988 NBA Draft.

Danny describes his terrifying transition of moving from Kansas to Los Angeles to begin his new life as the L.A. Clippers' number-one draft pick.

We discuss his tenure with the Clippers, his back-to-back All-Star selections (1993 and 1994) and trade from Los Angeles to the Atlanta Hawks, where he had the unenviable task of replacing the iconic Dominique Wilkins.

In September of 1994, Manning signed with the Phoenix Suns. He played in Arizona for five seasons. Danny reflects on the importance of the support he was given from the Suns franchise and President Jerry Colangelo. Danny was named NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 1998.

The conversation even ventures briefly into dessert food and body art. Plus, I quiz Danny on one play from his career to see how quickly he can recall it. An insightful and fun discussion covering his remarkable journey of perseverance, determination and achievement.

Many thanks to Justin Bauman for connecting me with Danny. This conversation was recorded just before Christmas, 2020.

Send Adam a text message.

High School All-American, NCAA great and NBA All-Star, Jeff Ruland. Jeff discusses his early sporting life and the major growth-spurt that coincided with his decision to focus on basketball. He was named High School All-American in the same class as Magic Johnson and was heavily recruited across the country. We chat about his decision to remain in New York and commit to Iona College, led by future luminary, Jim Valvano.

Jeff opens up about the 1980 NBA Draft and why he opted to head overseas and play in Spain, before commencing his rookie season in 1982. We talk about Jeff's excellent first three full seasons, that resulted in NBA All-Star selections in 1984 and 1985. Jeff recalls Michael Jordan's debut game in the NBA and the rude awakening that MJ would receive on his first dunk attempt in Chicago Stadium.

We chat about the impact of the Showtime Lakers and Boston's Big Three, plus, the onset of injury issues that began to halt Jeff's career. We also talk about one of the most memorable trades in NBA history; the Bullets' decision to trade Jeff to Philadelphia, in exchange for Moses Malone. Jeff details his (first) retirement from the NBA in 1987 and how he went back to college to complete his degree, before making his remarkable comeback attempt in the 1992 season.

We also learn about the successes of Jeff's coaching career, that are also mixed with trials and tribulations you need to hear to fully comprehend. Our conversation covers a broad-range of interesting topics and is an open and engaging look at one of basketball's most underrated careers ever.

27 May 2015Dale Ellis: Two-time All-American (Tennessee), All-Star & 17-year NBA veteran - AIR05700:53:52

Send Adam a text message.

Two-time All-American (Tennessee), All-Star and 17-year NBA veteran, Dale Ellis.

We discuss Dale's high school basketball days, followed by his outstanding four seasons with the Tennessee Volunteers, where he was twice named All-American.

Dale talks about his whereabouts on NBA Draft Day, 1983, when he was selected ninth overall by the Dallas Mavericks. We cover his three seasons with the Mavs, playing alongside fellow draftee Derek Harper, including these memorable finishes to games against the mighty Los Angeles Lakers.

Here's the wild finish - aka 'Moody Madness' - that I asked Dale about (1984 Playoffs).

Dale discusses his trade from Dallas to Seattle, where he set the NBA record for highest, single-season scoring increase - from 7.1 (1986, Dallas) to a staggering 24.9 points per game (1987, Seattle). Ellis also won Most Improved Player and in that year's Playoffs, dominated his former team, helping steer the Sonics to the Western Conference Finals.

We chat about some of the many great players that Dale played with, including Nate McMillan, Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, Tom Chambers, Xavier McDaniel, Avery Johnson, Dennis Rodman & David Robinson.

Of course, with Dale Ellis as my guest, I had to ask about his incredible three-point shooting prowess. Dale was the first player in NBA history, to make 1000 three-point field goals. He competed in numerous Three-Point Shootouts, too, including the iconic match-up with Larry Bird, in 1988 at Chicago Stadium.

When Dale mentioned Michael Jordan, I didn't need to be told twice, to ask more about their battles over the years. He recalls some funny stories and talks about MJ's greatness.

Dale reminisces about his fantastic 1989 season. Aside from averaging a career-high 27.5ppg and being named to the All-NBA 3rd Team, he had an All-Star Weekend for the ages, winning the Three-Point Shootout and then scored 27 points the following day, for the Western Conference All-Stars. Dale also shares a great All-Star story, talking about his idol, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, plus, playing with future Hall of Famer, John Stockton.

We also discuss his seasons spent with the Milwaukee Bucks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and his return to Seattle in 1998, where he would lead the NBA, connecting on a staggering 46.4% of his three-point field goals.

Last year (2014), Dale became just the fourth player to have his jersey retired, by the University of T

There’s a strong possibility that I’ll have an opportunity to meet with Fat - and other retired players - as my wife (Lisa) and I will be holidaying in the USA at the same time. 21 Mar 2017Don Casey: High school, college and NBA coaching great - AIR07600:55:07

Send Adam a text message.

High school, college and NBA coaching great, Don Casey.

To say that Don Casey is an important figure to the game of basketball, is to massively undersell his contributions. His head-coaching journey began in 1958, when he was just 21 years old. Almost by accident, Don found basketball; perhaps, basketball found Don. He enjoyed great success, leading Bishop Eustace High School to two state championships (Class B and A in successive seasons) in six years.

We discuss Don’s transition to the college ranks, where he spent nine seasons as the head coach of Temple University. We also chat about his long-time mentor, the legendary Harry Litwack.

The NBA came calling for the 1983 season. Don remained at the highest level (as an assistant and/or head coach) for almost 20 years. We talk about his memories and experiences from that stage of his life. He went from the sleepless nights and frustrations of leading the L.A. Clippers (through 1990), to joining Chris Ford‘s coaching staff on the Boston Celtics (1991). We reflect on Don’s memories of Boston, including his links to the great Jack McCallum, who at one time, lived with Don whilst researching Unfinished Business. Don would move to New Jersey after the 1996 season, to work for John Calipari, before finishing his NBA (coaching) career as head coach of the New Jersey Nets.

The conversation concludes with a brief discussion about Don’s post-NBA interests.

Links discussed (include):
* Boston Celtics vs Indiana Pacers (1991 NBA Playoffs)
* New Jersey Nets vs Chicago Bulls (1998 NBA Playoffs)

People mentioned include Terence Stansbury, Chuck Person, Jim McIlvaine, Kendall Gill, Bob Hill, Jim Lynam, Larry Bird, Red Auerbach, Reggie Miller, Sherman Douglas, Ernie Grunfeld, Gene Shue, Don Chaney and John Bagley.

06 Jul 2021Adam on future episodes, new website and how you can support the show00:02:10

Send Adam a text message.

Hey, it’s Adam here. A quick podcast update for you as we near the end of the first week of July, 2021. Here’s a snapshot of what’s happening behind the scenes.

I have recorded - but not yet released - part one of my conversation with Wali Jones. He starred in college at Villanova, before entering the NBA and earning an All-Rookie selection in 1965 and winning an NBA championship in 1967 as a key member of one of the most-dominant teams in history - the Philadelphia 76ers. Wali discusses his memories of being teammates with the iconic Wilt Chamberlain and much more.

Numerous topic-based episodes are also in the works. Fans of Tom Chambers would be wise to keep an eye on the podcast feed over the coming months. Plus, upcoming episodes will feature authors discussing a range of great basketball books.

I've updated my website. It now offers the ability for fans of the show to support the podcast monetarily. Completely optional, of course. You can make PayPal donations, sponsor episodes or visit an affiliate link - at no extra cost to you - to basketball-related retailers here in Australia and the USA. Listener support helps offset some of the costs involved in producing the show, which is now in its tenth year.

Remember, you can always reach me via e-mail. All the best and thanks once more for being a listener of the show.

14 Mar 2016Michael Jordan's second NBA season - December 9 through 23, 1985 - NB86-600:49:15

Send Adam a text message.

Adam & Aaron celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Jordan's second season in the National Basketball Association. This episode covers:

- NBA regular season - December 9 through 23, 1985

- Insightful minutiae, all but lost to the annals of basketball history

In this episode, we discuss numerous happenings from the next 15-day block of the 1985-86 NBA season. The Chicago Bulls played seven games in this span – three wins and four losses.

Around the league, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers continued their fantastic starts to the season. We chat about a (possible) 'cast-breaking ceremony', to check whether Michael Jordan's broken foot had healed. However, this news only plays the role of 'supporting cast', in an episode where Manute Bol stands tall...very tall. In the absence of Jeff Ruland (broken ankle), Bol's first-career start resulted in 18 points, 12 blocks and nine rebounds.

We also talk about the reasoning behind Jordan's decision to (mostly) not travel with his team. The Chicago Tribune reported that teammates were voicing their disappointment in MJ's 'lack of moral support' - he even declined the request (to attend games) of Bulls' GM, Jerry Krause.

The Dallas Mavericks' Mark Aguirre, was suspended by his team, after refusing Coach Dick Motta's request to re-enter a game, in Atlanta. Motta took exception to Mark helping his friend, Dominique Wilkins, to his feet, after the pair collided, earlier in the game.

Further, we discuss some milestones. It was a great span for the San Antonio Spurs. Alvin Robertson was named the NBA's Player of the Week, notching a career-high 41 points against the Denver Nuggets. In that same game, Artis Gilmore eclipsed 23,000 career points (ABA and NBA).

This episode continues our coverage of the 1985-86 NBA season. We encourage your interaction. Feel free to suggest specific games, moments and events from within the season, for us to cover in future episodes of the series. Thanks for taking the time to listen to the show. 18 Dec 20131988 NBA All-Star Game - AIR03800:54:35

Send Adam a text message.

Adam and Aaron discuss the 1988 NBA All-Star Game - one of the greatest ever. Michael Jordan scored 40 points, en route to Most Valuable Player honors. We devote an entire episode to our favorite All-Star Game, ever.

We cover a multitude of topics, including how and when we first watched this game - plus, its ongoing effect on our NBA-fandom. We talk about the CBS television coverage, pre-game player introductions and national anthem; Adam freely admits to choking up, before the game even commenced. We chat about the vast array of (future) Hall of Fame players, who competed in this game.

We break down Pat O'Brien's, 'At the Half' (TV segment), featuring a great story about then-coach of the Utah Jazz - and, regular funny-man - Frank Layden. There's even brief discussion of the Legends Game, Three-Point Shootout and Slam-Dunk Competition. Controversy reigns supreme, when we answer a listener-submitted question. All this aside, we dissect the game's key moments, great plays and all the statistics that matter and records that were flirted with, or broken. If you enjoy a laugh, the closing credits alone are definitely worth a listen, too.

To top it all off, Aaron's dogs, Jasmine and (the appropriately-named) Wilkins, each contribute to the episode's pre-music opener. This may be the definitive topic-based episode, to date!

NBA All-Star, 11-year veteran & Slam Dunk Champion, Cedric Ceballos.

Prior to delving into Cedric's on-court prowess, we talk about his love for music and the famous album, 'Basketball's Best Kept Secret', featuring Dana Barros and many others.

Little-known fact: Cedric was a ball-boy at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Ceballos went on to star at Ventura College, before playing his junior and senior seasons at Cal State Fullerton - where he was scouted by Jerry West - averaging better than 22 points & 10 rebounds per game.

Cedric discusses the 1990 NBA Draft, and his flurry of emotions, waiting to hear his name called. He was selected 48th overall, by the Phoenix Suns. Ced talks about his transition from college, and learning the game from veterans like Tom Chambers, Eddie Johnson & Dan Majerle.

Our conversation also uncovers fascinating details behind Dee Brown's victory - punctuated by his memorable, pumping-up of the Reebok shoes, and 'Blind Dunk' - in the 1991 Slam Dunk Competition.

Cedric won the 1992 contest, finishing with his famous 'Hocus Pocus' jam, dedicated to Magic Johnson. Few people know, that Cedric & Dee competed in a college dunk contest, at the Orlando All-Star Classic. 25 years later, prepare to hear the inside story that will change most of what you know about the history of the NBA's 1991 Dunk Contest.

We break down the 1993 season. Paul Westphal was named as coach, the Suns traded for Charles Barkley and Cedric led the league in field-goal percentage (57.6). Phoenix steamrolled the league, en route to 62 wins and the number-one seed in the Playoffs. The Suns survived their first-round series against the upstart Lakers, with an overtime victory in the fifth and deciding game.

Injury hit Cedric at the worst possible time. He broke his foot during the 1993 Western Conference Finals; missing the NBA Finals against Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and the Chicago Bulls. He talks about the emotions of supporting his team from the sidelines.

We cover Cedric's trade (September, 1994) from Phoenix to the L.A. Lakers, where he enjoyed NBA-career highs in scoring, rebounds and assists. Ceballos was named an All-Star, however, an incident with Dikembe Mutombo, days prior to the 1995 All-Star Game, led to Cedric missing the game due to injury. In a cruel twist of fate, Mutombo would receive his second All-Star nod.

Magic Johnson returned to the NBA during the 1996 season. Cedric talks

06 May 2020The Last Dance - Episode 2 recap (news on upcoming guests) - AIR10100:26:06

Send Adam a text message.

We're back. Aaron joins me to recap episode two of The Last Dance docuseries.

Check out my podcast feed - I've now released the first in a series of The Last Dance bonus shows, with two great guests who can personally relate to series:

Marc Grossman - Head Statistician of the Bulls since 1977 (still working for the franchise today).

Steve Kashul – for most of the 1990s, Anchor and Host of Chicago Bulls Basketball on SportsChannel and Fox Sports Net Chicago. He then transitioned to the role of Chicago Bulls Radio Host for more than 20 years.

Marc details the creative ways the Bulls’ stats team allowed Jordan every-possible second of court-time, during his so-called ‘seven-minute per half’ restrictions, upon returning from his broken foot in the 1986 season.

Steve talks about his question to Jordan that airs near the end of (The Last Dance) episode two, where he asked MJ about Pippen’s “earth-shattering comments” from Nov, 1997 – Pip had requested a trade, whilst still on the Bulls’ injured list.

27 Jul 2016Michael Holton: NCAA championship finalist and NBA / CBA veteran - AIR07201:10:56

Send Adam a text message.

NCAA Championship finalist, NBA / CBA veteran and broadcaster, Michael Holton.

Michael was a great player in high school. As a senior (1979), he averaged 27 points per game. He discusses his fondest memories of playing high school basketball. Fifteen years later – when Michael entered the coaching ranks – he’d reunite with his high school coach, George Terzian. Michael also talks about his decision to sign with the UCLA Bruins.

Michael was a starter as a freshman and was named the Bruins’ outstanding first-year player. He recalls his initial fear of perhaps not being good enough to succeed on the next level – that fear was quickly allayed. After winning only eight of the first 14 games, the Bruins caught fire at the perfect time; steamrolling through the 1980 NCAA Tournament, all the way to the Championship Game versus the Louisville Cardinals. For perspective, here’s the list of teams that UCLA defeated and some of the big-time players Michael encountered:

Old Dominion (Mark West) / DePaul (Terry Cummings & Mark Aguirre) / Ohio State (Kelvin Ransey & Clark Kellogg) / Clemson (Larry Nance & Mitchell Wiggins) / Purdue (Joe Barry Carroll).

In the 1980 Championship game, UCLA lost 59-54. The Cardinals were littered with future-NBA players: Darrell Griffith, Derek Smith, Rodney McCray & Jerry Eaves. Michael reflects on that amazing run to the final.

Holton’s freshman season was the senior year for Kiki VanDeWeghe – who went on to star in the NBA, notching-up seven seasons of 20-plus points per game in the 1980s – Michael talks about the importance influence of the Bruins’ junior and senior players.

As a sophomore in 1981 (outright) and junior in 1982 (tied with Ralph Jackson), Michael was named the Bruins’ Outstanding Team Player. UCLA made the second round of the 1981 NCAA Tournament, but missed the post-season in 1982. Former guests and friends of the show, Mark Eaton and Nigel Miguel, joined the Bruins around this time, too. Michael talks about the transition from (coaches) Larry Brown to Larry Farmer.

As a senior, Michael was named captain and led the team in free-throw percentage. His college career ended (1983) with a second-round exit to the Utah Utes. After reaching the title game as a freshman, Michael contrasts his feelings about exiting the tournament early (as a senior).

We discuss the 1983 Draft. Michael’s opportunity to play in the NBA would have to wait one season. After Golden State waived him (October, 1983), he signed with the Coquis; the Continental Basketball Association’s (CBA) newl

10 Apr 2014Rick Barry: One of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History - AIR04600:54:18

Send Adam a text message.

One of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, Rick Barry. Rick discusses his first sporting love of baseball - he talks fondly of his hero - the reason behind his choice to wear the iconic jersey number 24. Incredibly, as a high-school senior, Rick almost gave up on his future Hall of Fame career, due in large-part to his then-coach.

We chat about the origins of his unique, underhanded free-throw shooting technique and its impact on his overall game. Rick talks about his passion for basketball and his immense desire to win. We talk about his outstanding college career at the University of Miami and how it prepared him to make an instant impact at the next level. We discuss the 1965 NBA Draft, where Rick was one of 10 future All-Stars selected.

We cover Rick's NBA Rookie of the Year triumph, playing against Wilt Chamberlain in the 1967 NBA Finals and Barry's decision to join the fledgling ABA (he won the 1969 ABA Championship) for its inaugural season. Rick talks candidly about being forced to sit out the entire 1968 season, when he was arguably in the prime of his career. We chat about his All-Star Game memories (eight in the NBA, four in the ABA) and his 1975 NBA Championship glory.

We talk about Rick's last two NBA seasons in Houston and how injury prematurely halted his career; interestingly, an NBA rule-change possibly denied Rick's plan to join the Boston Celtics or Los Angeles Lakers.

Rick discusses his Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement, his foray into coaching (1990s) and the opportunities missed at NBA level. We round out the conversation, learning about Rick's current-day interests, including a love of fly fishing and his business pursuits.

We run the gamut of discussion topics that shed light on the competitive nature of a true basketball great.

06 May 2015Rick Brown: SEC Legend, NBA veteran & European Champion - AIR05600:50:45

Send Adam a text message.

SEC Legend, NBA veteran and European Champion, Rick Brown.

We discuss Rick's early career and his tough, yet rewarding, decision to move to Atlanta and play high-school basketball. His outstanding HS years put Rick on the national radar and he was recruited by numerous colleges, including Michigan and Kentucky. Ultimately, he decided to move back home and played four years with Mississippi State University.

Rick was one of the players that the Golden State Warriors drafted, after they traded away Robert Parish and dealt their number three pick to the Celtics, in the 1980 NBA Draft - that selection would be Kevin McHale - effectively forming Boston's Hall of Fame, 'Big Three'.

Rick recalls his years with the Warriors, and talks about playing with personalities like World B. Free, Bernard King and Joe Barry Carroll. Golden State traded Rick to Atlanta, mid-way through the 1983 season - this was Dominique Wilkins' rookie year. We talk about his time with the Hawks and also his role in Larry Bird's incredible 60-point game, in 1985.

After finishing his NBA career, Rick moved overseas and achieved high levels of success, becoming a European Champion in the process. He played ten years in Europe, with very-recognizable names, including Mike D'Antoni, Bob McAdoo and Arvydas Sabonis. One of Rick's greatest moments, happened in 1992, when he won his team (Real Madrid) the European Cup Final.

Last year (2014), Rick was inducted into Mississippi State University's Sports Hall of Fame. He talks about that honor and the importance of leaving a legacy to his family. We also briefly chat about his sons who are looking to make a name for themselves in the future.

After our conversation, I briefly invite my good friend, Cobi Sobrino - who was in attendance at the 1992 European Cup Final - onto the show. He recalls the game and Rick's impact on European basketball.

My Forgotten Legends (Cobi's basketball-history website / podcast).

Chloé (Rick's wife) runs, Bread-Winning Moms (blog / podcast) mentioned in this episode.

04 Jun 2014Roosevelt Chapman: Dayton legend, NBA draftee and international star - AIR04801:00:27

Send Adam a text message.

Dayton Flyers' all-time leading scorer and NCAA star, Roosevelt Chapman. Adam & Aaron welcome Roosevelt to the podcast, with an in-depth discussion of his very successful, well-traveled, yet largely-unheralded basketball career. If ever a guest warranted featuring on the show, Roosevelt 'Velvet' Chapman is that guy. In 1984, within the span of just three months, he starred in the NCAA Tournament, was invited to the Team USA Olympic Trials and was selected in the NBA Draft.

Roosevelt talks about his early years in Brooklyn and how his game developed on the playgrounds of New York City. He discusses some of the future NBA stars he grew up with, including Chris Mullin, Mark Jackson and Rod Strickland, to name a few. The development of Chapman's game earned him the opportunity to attend the University of Dayton. We chat about his incredible senior season at college, where he led the Flyers to the Elite Eight in the 1984 NCAA Tournament - overcoming Wayman Tisdale and Detlef Schrempf in the process; finally succumbing to Patrick Ewing and his Georgetown Hoyas.

Roosevelt discusses his involvement in the Team USA Olympic Trials in 1984, including two great stories involving Michael Jordan and John Stockton. He opens up about his selection in the 1984 NBA Draft and what led to him pursuing opportunities to play professionally - achieving great success - traveling around the world.

This is one of my favorite episodes of the show, to date. Roosevelt's story is fascinating; discovering the history and importance of players who often fly under the radar, is a passion of mine.

05 May 2021Adam guests on NBL Pocket Podcast - AIR11800:45:59

Send Adam a text message.

My friend, Joseph Corr - host of NBL Pocket Podcast - invited me on his show. We recorded this evergreen conversation in August of 2019. The episode was released on his podcast feed in early 2020.

This is my edit of the hour-long episode that Joe released. Fans of my show may be interested to hear me mention a few guest episodes that have not yet come to fruition. We also discuss plenty of 1990s NBA topics.

Joe's podcast is primarily focused on Australia's National Basketball League (NBL). Our league gained global recognition recently due to its Next Stars program, thanks largely to LaMelo Ball and RJ Hampton.

Check out Joe’s podcast if you haven't already. Search for ‘NBL Pocket Podcast’ on your podcast player of choice. I'm a fan of his interviewing style - he is matter of fact, curious and asks great questions of his guests.
