20 May 2019#20 Why You Should Visualise Your Life Having All The Money You Want 00:13:03

In today‘s episode I’d like to do something a bit different and walk you through a visualisation exercise to imagine how your life will look like when you have achieved the financial goals that you’ve set to yourself and the impact on the other areas of your life.

You’ve probably heard that many lottery winners go broke only a few years after they won millions…

The reason why they lose it all have less to do with money than the psychology and the lack of preparation to handle this event both at an emotional level and at a practical level.

If it were you, if you win 100 million dollars today, how will ensure you stay level-headed, think clearly and stick to your values?

As you are thinking about the money that you need to accomplish your goals, I’d like to invite you to do a reality check now, take a holistic view and consider all the elements in your life that will be impacted once you start bringing in more income.

 In this episode you’ll learn:

  • Why it is absolutely important to do this visualisation exercise
  • How to visualise your desired life in detail as I walk you through the exercise
  • How to incorporate the results of the visualisation into an action plan for the short and long term

The pdf of this exercise is available to download in the show notes of the episode 20

03 Jun 2019#22 A Call to Destiny - Empowering African Entrepreneurs with Parminder Vir OBE01:42:23

Discover how a girl from rural Punjab, in India, found herself running Africa's biggest entrepreneurship programme.

Parminder Vir OBE is the former CEO of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), Africa’s leading philanthropic organisation.  TEF entrepreneurship program is the most ambitious African Entrepreneurship Programme with a $100 million commitment over 10-year, to identify, train, mentor, and fund 10,000 entrepreneurs from across the continent.

Parminder has a background as film and TV producer with BBC Television, Carlton Television and Channel 4, as well as CEO of her own independent production company. She has also produced some of Britain's biggest events and TV shows including the MOBO Awards and EMMA Awards.

“It was a call to destiny… and having the courage and the imagination to respond to this opportunity at the age of 57,” Parminder says.

In this breath-taking conversation we talk about how she became the CEO of the Tony Elumelu Foundation entrepreneurship program as she was just thinking of retiring. But with the blessing of her husband and her two daughters, she embarked instead on this new adventure in Lagos, Nigeria where she had to imagine what the entrepreneurship program would look like on a blank sheet of paper.

She explains the fascinating concept of ‘institutionalising luck’ and ‘democratizing opportunities’ and the seven pillars of the program and its holistic approach to entrepreneurship development.

She also tells how her storytelling skills as a filmmaker and being on the ground helped to create an original African model rather than adopting western-based business models and also how her biggest challenge was about managing success when the applications received climbed from 20,000 in the first year to 216,000+ the fifth year to select 1000 entrepreneurs.

Parminder reveals how the underlying thread of her multifaceted career led her to become an agent of change in big institutions such as British television and British film industry.

She also talks about how being family and duty-bound were so important that she accepted an arranged marriage at 18 to someone she never met and why failure was not an option as she realised the sacrifice that her parents made to put food on the table. She had to succeed to make a better life!

Parminder believes that you have the power to imagine what you'd like to be and what you'd like to do. You can create the roadmap for achieving them. And whatever you're doing, know that someone else has done it before; you can be inspired by someone else's story.

19 Jan 2020#50 It’s Time to Dream Again 00:13:40

Welcome to Season 5 of MWML podcast and to the episode 50. I know that some of you have started the year 2020 with big fat juicy goals, aspiration and desire you want to accomplish this year and the next decade but I also know that for some you, this is an excruciating exercise. You are not sure about your dream or how to articulate it in a way that it becomes your driving force in life.

When we talk about doing meaningful work and creating a meaningful life, you got to know what that looks like for you. One of the reasons we don’t get joy, satisfaction in our work or in our life is that we often play small. We set a small goal we can achieve and as soon as we realise that small goal, we have to find a new goal to keep us going; and sometimes we get stuck and until we find something meaningful enough to hang on to.

What if instead, we have a big dream; a dream so big that it scares us; a dream that will take a while to come to pass? This is what I invite you to do with me at the beginning of this year 2020.

You've heard that the best way to predict the future is to create it. My goal in this episode and this season is to help you find and articulate your dream, something that is going to fire you up for the next 5-10 years.

01 Jul 2019#26 Changing Lives Through Digital Inclusion with Helen Milner OBE00:44:53

Find out how a girl who was dreaming of becoming Prime Minister ended up leading a digital and social inclusion movement in the UK and beyond.

Helen Milner OBE is the Chief Executive at Good Things Foundation, a social change charity that is driving social and digital inclusion. They support excluded people to become digitally able and active and apply their knowledge in all aspects of their lives, including health, getting a job and growing financial resilience. She was named by the Digital Hall of Fame as one of the 20 people who had achieved great things in Britain using digital.

Helen as a real tech evangelist thinks that technology has huge benefits for people's lives and can be transformative. Her career has been around, digital, education and helping people to learn new skills and she is passionate about giving a second-chance to adults with learning.

In this thought-provoking conversation, Helen explains where her passion for Digital Inclusion come from and why she had always been driven to achieve impact and been ambitious but for the greater good. She also shed some light on the overlap between digital and social exclusion.

She explains how she marries big picture thinking with being very practical and why we need a laser focus to get things done. Being so driven to achieve her mission meant that Helen struggled to fit it all into a working week and worked seven days a week for several years until she finally learnt the life-saving skills of delegation.

She also offers great advice to get paid more in a job you love and not undervalue yourself.

Determined to drive the movement of digital and social inclusion in the UK, her organisation is expanding in Australia and in Kenya, focusing on socially excluded people.

Having helped almost three million people with thousands of partners, Helen believes that we need to bring people in to help us achieve our goal rather than trying to do it alone!

09 Jul 2019#27 Creating a Better Future Through More Wisdom with Dr Bruce Lloyd 00:56:38

Discover how a kid who dreamt of being a motor racing driver became an academic, helping PhD students to develop a broader view of life whilst researching their subjects.

Dr Bruce Lloyd, Emeritus Professor in Strategic Management, London South Bank University has spent over 20 years in industry and finance before joining the academic world to help establish the Management Centre at what is now London South Bank University.

Bruce has written extensively on a wide range of strategy and futures-related issues. He was also the UK coordinator for 'The Millennium Project' 1999-2005 and has been active in the 'Futures industry'.

In true academic, Bruce has been so generous in sharing his wisdom during our interview that I am creating two episodes from our conversation. This first part is almost a masterclass in strategy and how to think about the Future as well as some great personal insights.

In our conversation, Bruce shares how he unexpectedly landed in the academic world as a professor of strategy and supervising PhDs and how he got involved in Future Studies. He explains the relationship as well as the difference between Strategy and Futures Studies and why we are better off with forecasting even if it’s not an exact science.

He tells how teaching in academic world was the most rewarding part of his whole career but also how the administrative side can feel very pressurised as he now enjoys his semi-retirement and doing what he wants rather than following other people’s agenda!

Bruce reveals the connection between leadership, wisdom, knowledge, management and organisation performance as well as how he finds himself studying wisdom. He also shares why values are becoming increasingly important in this world and explains the logical link between data, information, knowledge and wisdom.

He tells us how the quality of conversation in organisations is critical in determining the quality of the decisions taken and why we should be okay to take decision based on imperfect information.

Bruce also explains why we should rehabilitate the word ‘leadership’ and not use it interchangeably for psychopathic, megalomaniacs and dictators. He highlights the distinction between authenticity and empathy and why it’s crucial to make that distinction and enlightens us about the danger of authenticity without values. He reveals how lack of trust in our society comes from people perceiving that there is a lack of fairness in the process of decision making.

Bruce believes that in the face of actual rapid changes, it’s important to have effective learning processes to make sure that change equal progress.

26 Nov 2023#113 The Best of Employee Advocacy: Key Moments Season 900:25:00

When considering employee advocacy or brand ambassador programs, organisations often assume:

⛔ It’s just employees sharing marketing on social media

⛔ It’s not relevant for managers and executives

⛔ It’s about continuously praising the company

⛔Tightly controlling the messaging of employee advocates is the key to success.

⛔ It’s only for sales and marketing staff

However, my guests in season 9 of my podcast Meaningful Work, Meaningful Life shared insights dispelling these myths and revealing the true potential of employee advocacy:

✅ Success requires share-worthy content and a culture where people enjoy working. (episode #104 Bradley Keenan)

✅ Allow people to proudly share what they're passionate about in your organisation (episode #105 Jessica Pharm)

✅ Executives should lead by example in sharing first online (episode #106 Michael Sørensen)

✅Invest in managers' abilities to form authentic relationships with their collaborators. (episode #109 Kristin Bell)

✅ Hire smart people who align with your values and support their wellbeing. People need to feel at home when working with you. (episode #108 Yao Azumah)

✅ Encourage self-belief and compassionate leadership. Stop, look and listen (episode #107 @Harpal Dhatt)

✅ Balance profits and human rights through human-centered technology. (episode #111 Fatima Roumate)

✅Coach managers to help employees navigate their careers and feel they belong. (episode #110 Antonia Bartels)

Done right, an employee advocacy program simply empowers people for a mutually beneficial partnership built on trust and care.

The old command-and-control mindsets misunderstand this potential.

But now you see the power of an authentic approach.

18 Sep 2019#33 You Are Never Too Small to Change Anything with Dr Jess Wade01:04:20

Welcome to season 4 of Meaningful Work, Meaningful Life podcast. In this season, I am breaking things down more specifically and featuring guests who are giving you practical techniques and tools to live a more meaningful life. My aim is to bring a very practical dimension to our conversation around the 3 Ms (meaning, Money and Movement) and decrypt the science of achieving happiness in life.

Some people read a book, enjoy it and hopefully take some notes to improve their business or their life. Most people simply forget what they’ve read after a while. But a few are so impacted by what they’ve read that they decide to stand up and do something to change their life. This was the case with Dr Jess Wade, a physicist at Imperial College London turned into a prolific Wikipedia editor. Her life has changed over the last few years thanks to the book ‘Inferior’ by Angela Saini.

“For a long time, I felt I was too small and insignificant to do anything that was impactful,” she says.

Jess is now called a ‘one-woman powerhouse’! She is a scientist on a mission. She wants every woman who has achieved something impressive in science to get the prominence and recognition they deserve – starting with a Wikipedia entry.

Listen to my fascinating conversation with Dr Jess Wade to find out:

  • How she struggled with maths before ending up being a top scientist
  • What a day in her life looks like
  • How to become a Wikipedia editor
  • What to do about the lack of support that affect the confidence of women to pick science subjects
  • How she combats the impostor syndrome to reach higher goals
  • How to build the case to get powerful people in the conversation to support diversity

And much more...

25 Sep 2019#34 Exploring and Fostering the Best of Your Humanity with Dr Michael F. Steger01:16:24

“It's a gift when work is so meaningful that you'd do it for free. And that's also a problem,” says, Dr Michael F. Steger, my guest in today’s episode. Michael is a Psychology Professor, Author, Speaker, Director of the Center for Meaning and Purpose. He is a recognized authority on meaning in life, purpose, happiness, psychological strengths, and positive psychology. His research interests center on understanding how people create a life worth living and seeking ways to help people flourish and achieve well-being.

In our fascinating conversation, Michael talks about:

  • His love for research and finding out why are we here on this planet – how we are going to be here and how we think about how we are here
  • Two types of people: those who are questioners like himself and are always questioning and searching and other people who are more comfortable with certainty
  • Why meaningful work is probably more demanding than meaningless one
  • Why ultimately it comes down to what we're going to do with our lives
  • The complex nature of selfishness vs giving
  • How he struggles with attention span and distraction
  • Why he rather wants to be living his values right now than be remembered for something when he is no longer here
  • And much more

01 Mar 2022#91 Be Your Own Authority with Meredith Keith-Chirch00:53:04

Have you ever wanted to do something in a certain way but was told by experts why you shouldn’t do it that way only to find out later you were right in the first place?

We often have a gut feeling to move in a certain way, but we don't trust our intuition.

How do you find your power to make bold and empowering choices for yourself even when they don’t sound logical or rational to others?

In today's episode 91 of the Meaningful Work, Meaningful Life podcast, my guest is Meredith Keith-Chirch, who helps high-achieving perfectionists take care of themselves and do their soul's work that brings them joy. She is the founder of Decolonizing Your Health.

11 Nov 2019#41 Awareness Is Key with Karen Revell00:47:40

In today’s episode, I am featuring the Trader profile, the fifth of the 8 Wealth Dynamics profiles. I have the pleasure to welcome Karen Revell, money and mindset coach who work with service-based entrepreneurs, and business leaders to help unlock their wealth.

Karen distinguishes four aspects to wealth: Financial wealth, an abundant lifestyle or living a rich life that doesn't necessarily relate to money, your self-worth: how you see yourself, your own identity and your inner wealth: your strengths, your talents, your genius.

Unlike most entrepreneurs who left the corporate world to do what they love; Karen was very much in flow in her corporate job. She climbed the ladder and had success in my career, earning well over six figures and in fact that enables her to build her financial wealth and retire from my job in her 40s.

Do you sometimes feel that no matter what you try, you are still stuck in inertia and can't get anything moving?

Welcome to this new episode of MWML podcast. Last week I explained how to make sense of the situation we are all finding ourselves in with the Coronavirus and understand the 5 stages of change to get prepared to what is coming ahead.

In today's episode, I am bringing you some practical ways to manage your time by adopting the rhythm of nature to achieve your goals with less resistance.

During this time where we are all confined at home, it's going to be very important to stay motivated during the long waiting phase and have some rhythm to remain productive.

Even before this lockdown, we have all experienced times when nothing seemed to be moving as we wanted. The more we tried hard and continued doing more of what we did to get out of the inertia, the more we dug deeper and couldn't find a way to get out of this apathy.

It turns out that understanding how energy works and how flow happens can help us tremendously to get unstuck and start moving things again.

In this episode, I cover the 5 types of energies available, how to use them to experience flow in our life, and how to apply the same principles in our daily life to boost our productivity.

04 Apr 2022#95 Takeaway 1 S8 – The great resignation: A build-up of many years of bad practices00:05:34

I had great conversations with my guests in this season 8, focussed on the great re-evaluation where we discussed their perspective on the great resignation that saw a massive exodus of employees out of their jobs during the covid 19 pandemic.

I thought I’d select the takeaways from our conversations in these short extracts. Of course, you can listen or listen again to the full episodes to get the full interviews.

We’ve explored many angles and the implications of the great resignation: from purpose to finding clarity, to financial well-being and health wellbeing, the end of a system and the need to reinvent a more empowering one where people can go to work and expect to have a great experience.

The takeaway 1 is that this phenomenon of great resignation is a build-up of many years of bad practices.

in episode 93, Nicole Townsend, founder of experience counts shares why she thinks that the pandemic was the perfect catalyst for employees who already felt burned out to quit and start their own venture.
