#160 - We all know about Western States, Hardrock, HURT, Badwater 135. We also know how difficult it is to get entry into these races. But there are hundreds of other great ultra races across the US you may have never heard of. This week's episode is about discovering twelve of them! I picked a cool one from a different state for each month of the year. I think it's important to support local race companies and this should help a little. Each race will have a link on the website so you can check it out yourself!

It's time to break away from unicorns and lollipops and know that in reality, we runners are way stronger!

#165 - We have a lot of choices of running shoes. The market is flooded with every type of shoe imaginable. If you like a really thick, padded sole, there's five different kinds for you. If you only want a little padding, they are there for you. If you want a big difference between the drop from heel to toe, you got it, none, you got that too. But for the minimalist runner, there are only a few choices. Xero Shoes is one of those. Steven Shasen and his wife started the company out of the idea that running as close to the way humans ran for thousands of years is the best way. And he's here to tell us why. Whether you agree or disagree with him, it's great to learn how and why he started the company. Or, if you're like me, I knew very little about this type of running shoe, so I was very happy to learn why this is a very valid shoe choice for many!

#170 - Fran Garton didn't know what was wrong, but one day things didn't feel right. She was eventually diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Unsatisfied with medicating herself to stop the pain, she knew there was another way. She talks about the in this weeks episode. As runners, we're used to dealing with pain. But there's a difference between the temporary pain of a race or training run and the constant pain from a disease, illness or medical condition. Fran helps give us suggestions and ways to helps with this pain, as well as inspiration to start our own journeys living pain free. #176 - Olympic sprinter Florence Griffith Joyner's brief life was but stellar. Her 100 and 200 meter records in 1988 still hold today! That alone is remarkable, but her history is also one that I wanted to give homage to this week. She broke open many barriers, including the one that said women can't be athletes and also be true their own selves. Throughout her short running career, she paved her own way, never following, never imitating. And always, with that contagious, beautiful smile.

#17 - They say the 60s are the new 30s or the 70s are the new 40s or....I think what they're trying to say is that we all get older but that shouldn't stop us from doing what we love. #19 - The San Francisco Bay Area is known for having the most open space for such a large populated area in the US. We're only minutes away from some amazing trails and many are easily accessible via public transportation. Trail running started early here and the earliest trail racing company was Enviro-Sports, started by Dave Horning, which started putting on triathlons. He shares some of the company's early history and how the racing scene has changed over time. I also speak with Wendell Doman, who most people know as Wendell. He's been running Coastal Trail Runs for a while and is not new to the racing community. In fact, Wendell has participated in the Barkley Marathons a few times. They don't require the intense planning and physical enormity an ultra does, nor do they require miles upon miles of training like a full marathon. You can travel out of town, run the race and be left not completely ruined. That means they're perfect as a destination race! #212 - Jamie Anderson and Brian Anderson-Needham are my guests this week. They are the owners of Weapon Brand, a terrific company teaching people of all types the correct preparation to defend themselves in all types of situations. I realize this is quite a controversial topic in the running community and I wanted to do a proper episode with the right guests and I think I've done it. Jamie and Brian are experts in the industry and give amazing answers to many of the questions asked. 

A couple words about this episode. This was recorded at the height of the January storms we had in Northern California. I lost power almost at the end of the episode, so we had to resume the interview a week later. And also, for whatever reason, the last bit of the episode is cut off. So I profusely apologize for that. In all the four years of doing this show, this has never happened. With that said, it is still one of my favorites and a very important subject. #213 - Last week was the worst week I've had in a very long time. I talk about it in this week's episode. It was all due to "operator error", as many things are, and I should have known better, but there it is. I go into full detail on the show. In the past, it would have crushed me, but not anymore. I'm stronger than I've ever been and I can handle what life throws my way. I also learn from my mistakes. Life has a way of teaching us lessons if we listen. They say we only learn from our failures not from our successes and I've learned a few valuable lessons. 

So, nope, I'm not quitting the show, I'll be around for a very long time!

#235 - We humans have been active, well, ever since we had to run away from dangerous beasts and run towards what might be our dinner. But we never embraced what might be called "exercise" until we were advanced enough to have leisure time. This week, I take a very brief look at the history of exercise as well as a look back at some of our favorite exercise equipment. And it is indeed a brief look because a full history could become a complete podcast all its own. So, if someone wants to run with that, I would take a listen. If you didn't know, the treadmill started as punishment for prisoners in England. And it's still punishment today! Some things never change. Also, did you know that in the Middle Ages, knights exercised by dancing in full armor! Those are just a couple of the fun and strange facts you will learn this week! I help to give a bit of guidance this week, by steering you through some of them, helping you determine if some things are worth the extra costs or if they really are not worth it. Of course it's up to you and perhaps you'll have a clearer picture after listening.

#238 - It's called Rocksylvania for a reason, Jenn Devore tells us, as she talks about her home state, Pennsylvania. She lives close to some very beautiful trails in the mountains of her lovely state. I enjoy looking at all the photos she shares and one day, I'll visit to try out some of those technical trails! She shares how she got started running and tells us about the charities that are close to her heart. She works very hard to spread the word about the rare disease Dystonia and tells us about it in this episode, as well as the fund raising she's doing for Dwell Orphan Care. #24 - Northern California is mostly wild lands. Much of the area is forested with great trails that are seldom used. This was the inaugural year of the Shasta Gateway 50m/50k/30k/10k. I finished the 50k and it was the hardest race I've ever accomplished. I go over in detail what made it hard and why I feel quite proud of myself for finishing.
