Back in February we ran a webinar discussing social media marketing trends for the year ahead, with the excellent Rochana Shrestha from Monzo and Lisa Prattfrom Girl Guiding making up a brilliant panel.

As part of the session there were a number of questions for Lisa and Rochana on the topic of careers. What this turned into was a super informative part of the session with some amazing and honest advice from both Lisa and Rochana!

This episode features that specific part of the Q&A, so if you are looking to get started in the world of digital marketing or are looking for new opportunities, definitely give this one a listen!

In this episode I talk to Chris from our PPC team to give you the lowdown on what they are all about, how to get started and a view on what we’ve seen from our initial testing.

Send us a text

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve probably heard about the forthcoming retirement of Universal analytics and the move to Google Analytics 4.

Although the news has spread far and wide, there is a lot of confusion as to what this means for digital marketers and what you need to do about it.

In this, the first part of a three episode series on Analytics, I sit down with Barbara Pezzi to get an overview of GA4.

Welcome to the third and final episode in our three part series on analytics.

The big reason behind wanting to run this series is that so many people struggle to get the most from their data, and with a large amount of change happening in the analytics world, getting to grips with your approach to analytics has never been more important.

A huge thank you to the brilliant Barbara Pezzi for her insights across the series, and we genuinely hope it’s been useful. If it has, please do take the time to subscribe and rate the podcast on Apple Podcasts - it makes a big difference, we really appreciate it and would also love to hear what you think.

11 May 2022#EP063 - Rising CPM Levels (Facebook Ads)00:18:42

Send us a text

It’s no secret that there is a general trend of costs increasing on Facebook Ads. However, in recent months many advertisers have been reporting larger than usual increases and big spikes in CPM.

Remember, no matter what campaign type you are running be that traffic, engagement or conversions…what you are actually paying for is the cost per thousand impressions (CPM).

In this episode I chat with Dan (Head of Client Services) about what we are seeing within the accounts we manage, and how to navigate the challenge of increased CPMs.

What this episode covers:

  • Why is CPM so important to monitor?
  • What we are seeing on our accounts
  • How to manage your way through increased costs
  • Dan’s tip of the week!

18 May 2022#EP064 - If You Had All The Budget In The World...00:16:34

Send us a text

A big thank you to Sophie who joined the episode for the conversation and for all her input on the topic!

A big part of our conversation was around the importance of being clear and intentional with how you plan your spend. We also discuss the danger of having ‘unlimited’ budgets; even when triggered by performance metrics it is always good to have some clear goal posts set.

We also cover the importance of continuing testing, and making sure that you have a portion of your budget allocated to new activity. Once of the biggest risks is remaining static with your approach, so always having some budget set aside to test new tactics will ensure you are always moving forwards.

Really hope you enjoy this episode and please do let us know by leaving us a review!

What this episode covers:

  • The importance of being intentional with your spend
  • How to plan your budget allocation
  • Setting aside testing budgets
  • Sophie’s tip of the week!

I’m joined by Abi who does an amazing job of running our wonderful Paid Social team, to chat through her thoughts and experiences on the subject of self-improvement.

We’re well aware that a topic such as this can be awash with vague advice, buzzwords and tips on how to manifest your success. Of course that’s completely fine if those approaches are your bag, but we tried our best to focus instead on practical lessons learnt from growing our teams here at Overdrive.

29 Jun 2022#EP068 - The Challenge of Setting The Right Targets00:21:00

Send us a text

Finding the right objectives for your business has always been tough, but for several reasons it’s harder now than it ever has been.

Firstly we’ve seen HUGE changes on the platforms in the past 12 months and secondly, comparing year on year is extremely difficult for many businesses due to out of character trading through the pandemic. When the goal posts have moved so much, knowing what you should be aiming for is hard!

The positive side of this is that if you can pin down a fresh set of benchmarks that you know make sense for your business, you immediately have a competitive advantage due to being able to scale with confidence.

Send us a text

Hello all and welcome to episode 72 of the Marketing Freaks podcast! This time we’re back with a very special guest Dan Roche

With over a decade of experience in performance marketing including roles at WeBuyAnyCar and On The Beach, it was great to get Dan’s take on what it’s like managing PPC in-house compared to being agency side.

Within the episode we talk about the day to day side of working in house, Dan’s experience’s of being pitched to by agencies (good and bad) and some of the lessons he’s taken through to his own performance marketing agency.

If you work in-house on PPC there’s a ton of great advice, but also some really useful insight for anyone working within an agency from the other side of the coin.

Having known Dan for quite some time now, it was also a brilliantly fun catch up! Genuinely hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it!

Enjoy!

11 Jan 2023#EP089 - Working Together - Agencies & Clients00:29:04

Send us a text

Hi all and welcome back to our podcast!

In this week’s episode, I’m joined by Dan and we’re catching up on something that should be at the forefront of your mind, yet so many forget - how agencies and clients should work together.

So let’s talk about relationships. When working with your clients or an agency, it’s important to remember that you’re a partnership and it’s essential to be aligned in what you want to achieve.

This way if there are any differences, you can solve these from the get-go or make any adjustments necessary. It’s all about being 100% on the same page right from the start, but also having transparent and open communication.

18 Jan 2023#EP090 - B2B, To be, or not to be00:30:27

Send us a text

Hi all and welcome to episode 90!

In this week’s episode, Jon and Chris discuss all things paid media in B2B.

They go over the differences of running B2B campaigns compared to B2C, as well as best practices you should be utilising for getting the best results possible. When it comes to talking paid media, B2B tends to be a little bit unloved, so we wanted to give it the attention it deserves!

When starting out with a new client that's wanting to run a B2B campaign, it’s important to get an understanding of not only the customer, but the buying cycle, the motivations behind buying, what the sale process looks like and general research on your client. This will allow you to proactively optimise for the best results!

25 Jan 2023#EP091 - Removing Ecommerce Barriers00:18:18

Send us a text

Hi all and welcome back to our podcast!

In this week’s episode, Jon and Abi talk through potential ecommerce barriers - what they are, and how to avoid them.

Regardless of how spectacular the product that your marketing is, it is key to ensure that the buying process is just as brilliant.

There are so many factors you need to take into consideration - especially between the moment someone clicks on your ad through to the final purchase. However, if any one of those elements is off, it can lead to minimal conversions and wasted spend.

01 Feb 2023#EP092 - Paid Social in 202300:15:34

Send us a text

Welcome to episode 92 of the Marketing Freaks podcast! In this episode, we’re going to be talking through our predictions for paid social in 2023.

In such a fast moving space it can often be really tricky to know what’s coming. However, we can make a sensible start by reviewing data from the previous year, looking at what’s working well now and also review some of the bigger industry trends.

If you’re working in performance marketing and would like a view on how to get the most out of paid social this year, we really hope this one is useful for you!

With iOS14 being such a huge moment with Meta Ads, 2022 felt very much like the year that everyone re-adjusted their strategies and rediscovered the best ways to drive performance forwards.

08 Feb 2023#EP093 - No-Nonsense Success Stories00:18:53

Send us a text

Hi all and welcome back to the Marketing Freaks podcast! In this episode, Jon and Abi talk through some of the successes we’ve had in paid social and provide a realistic overview of what has worked well and why.

With Paid Social being such a noisy space, it can be easy to avoid being experimental with your digital marketing in fear that you’ll get lost in the abyss and waste not only energy and time, but money. This is where having the right mindset comes into play, and it can make a huge difference.

As a business, we’ve found that testing really is key to any and every account if you want to be successful in increasing performance.

So what do we mean in “having the right mindset”? Well, it’s simple. Sometimes you need to step away from your screen, sit with your team and brainstorm. We have found this so beneficial in Overdrive Digital, and this is where a lot of our brilliant ideas come from.

15 Feb 2023#EP094 - What To Ask A New Agency00:18:50

Send us a text

Hi everyone and welcome to episode 94 of the Marketing Freaks podcast! In this episode, Jon and Dan go over everything you need to know and ask when you’re looking for a new digital marketing agency to work with.

When you go into a sales process as a client you can be bombarded with reasons to work with that particular agency, but it's crucial to think about a few of the following questions before you make the final decision as to whether you want to create a partnership or not.

Who is going to be working on your account and will you have direct contact with those people? Not only will this give you a better understanding of who will be in your account day-to-day but it will also give you the confidence to know who to contact with any questions, should you need to.

Ideally, when you enter a partnership with an external company, you aim to maintain this relationship for a longer period of time to allow your business to have some consistency and for you to be able to see whether there is progression within the account. So, it’s important to lay everything out on the table from that very first meeting in order to know whether it's going to work for you and your business.

24 Feb 2023#EP095 - The Importance Of Landing Pages00:16:28

Send us a text

Hi All and welcome back to the Marketing Freaks podcast! In this episode, Jon, Chris & Rosie discuss the importance of landing pages and why they are a crucial element to obtaining conversions within paid media.

It can be a common misconception that ads are the solution to all problems and by pumping money into paid media, you’re guaranteed to gain conversions. Although ads play a vital part in this process, if your final stage in the funnel (the landing page) is not up to scratch, it can equate to high bounce rates and wasted spend.

So how do you know whether your landing page is the reason that conversions are low? This is where the importance of analysing the metrics and data comes into play. If you have a high CTR, you’re likely to be targeting the right people and are successfully pushing the traffic through to the right place. But if you notice that the conversion rate is low, it's likely that the landing page is the cause of this issue.

02 Mar 2023#EP096 - Mini Series Part 1, GA4 Where It's At00:17:09

Send us a text

Welcome to the first part in a new mini series with our good friend and analytics genius Barbara Pezzi!

Over the next three weeks we’re going to be focussing on Analytics, covering off GA4 and other great advice to help you make more sense from your data.

In this first episode we catch up on GA4 and look at where the product is at now ahead of the retirement of Universal Analytics this summer.

I think everyone will now be aware of the fact that Universal Analytics is retiring this summer, which means anyone wishing to continue using Google Analytics will effectively be forced to migrate over their reporting to GA4.

08 Mar 2023#EP097 - Mini Series Part 2, Migrating to GA400:24:13

Send us a text

Hi all and welcome to episode 97 of the Marketing Freaks podcast!

In this week’s episode, Jon and the incredible Analytics guru Barbara Pezzi, dive into what to expect when migrating from Universal to the new GA4 platform.

In the previous episode, Jon and Barbara discussed a few of the pros and cons with GA4 and the teething problems that you are likely to come across when learning the new platform.

As most will know, Universal Analytics will no longer be available from July 2023. The unfortunate likelihood is that there are still a lot of people/companies that won’t be aware of these changes and what effects it will have on your business.

So it’s vital that if you plan on utilising the new GA4 platform, that you gain as much knowledge as you possibly can before you get stung and lose all your data from Universal Analytics.

16 Mar 2023#EP098 - Mini Series Part 3, The Value In Outside Expertise00:22:56

Send us a text

Hi all and welcome to episode 98 of the Marketing Freaks podcast!

During this week’s episode, Jon and the Analytics wizard Barbara Pezzi, discuss the benefits in investing in expert advice from outside of your organisation.

If you haven’t tuned into our podcast recently, this episode is part of a three part mini series with Barbara discussing all things GA4; from pros and cons to migration within the new platform (which in our biassed opinion, are really worth a listen!)

So are you and your company feeling confident that you have all of the correct tracking set up with GA4 when the migration takes place in July 2023?

One of the common things we hear in the industry is “We’ve always done things this way” but that doesn’t necessarily mean it's the right way.. Are you currently tracking too much data? So now you’re left with a mass of information that doesn’t necessarily make sense or equate to any hard figures but is just there for the sake of being… There?

22 Mar 2023#EP099 - Defining Corporate Values00:27:38

Send us a text

Hi all and welcome to episode 99 of the Marketing Freaks podcast!

During this week’s episode, Jon is joined by the wonderful Anastasia Roumelioti to talk about how defining the right corporate values for your business enables you to steer your marketing efforts, sales and growth in the right direction.

Every company has its own culture which is a large part of the DNA of a business and by utilising core values within a business, you’re providing your team with the tools and knowledge to carry out day-to-day activities effectively.

It’s important that these values align with the objective in terms of what the business aims to achieve and they should be there to help create a framework in conducting business. So what are the common mistakes people make when setting their core values?

One of the main errors we often come across is the vagueness that some values have and their lack of authenticity. When core values are set in place, it's crucial that they are both actionable and memorable. This then means that all employees will not only remember them along the way, but will also take action in relation to that value.

29 Mar 2023#EP100 - (Part 1) Why Your Ads Might Not Be Working00:24:08

Send us a text

Hi all and welcome to episode 100 of the Marketing Freaks podcast!

Over the next two weeks, Jon is joined by our very own Abi Carey and are focussing on ad performance & do’s and don'ts in ad creation. They discuss some of the potential reasons as to why your ads might not be working and what changes you can make within your business to rectify this.

During this week’s episode, Jon and Abi talk through some of the common misconceptions when it comes to ad creation.

One of the biggest obstacles we often come across at Overdrive Digital is the ad creative. Previously content was designed to be more sleek and professional, however, relying on content like this nowadays can be seen as a huge error.

05 Apr 2023#EP101 - (Part 2) Why Your Ads Might Not Be Working00:19:08

Send us a text

Hi all and welcome to episode 101 (Not the Dalmatians movie) of the Marketing Freaks podcast!

In this week’s episode, Jon and our Paid Social whiz Abi Carey continue to discuss other potential reasons as to why your ads might not be working and why, as well as providing ways to improve the performance.

In the previous episode, Jon and Abi went over some of the common things we see within the digital marketing agency when it comes to poor performing ads, whether it’s creative design being too complex or simply not utilising what is available when it comes to ad strategy i.e. creating UGC style content. In this episode, we dive deeper into reasons that may not have even crossed your mind before…

Although it may be controversial (especially coming from a performance agency), and really quite daunting to come to terms with, one thing we flag to our clients is that they are not spending enough on automated campaigns. We understand this can be a bitter pill to swallow for most and we aren’t trying to tell you to spend more money if your results aren’t looking good.

13 Apr 2023#EP102 - What Data Do You Really Need?00:21:37

Send us a text

Hi all and welcome to episode 102 of the Marketing Freaks podcast!

In this week’s episode, Jon is joined by our Head of Client Services Dan to discuss not only the importance of data, but being able to understand and report your data effectively by looking at the appropriate metrics for your product.

Data is the fuel that drives digital marketing. Without it, we wouldn't be able to measure the success of our campaigns, make informed decisions, and improve our results. But with so much data available, it's easy to pollute your view and be led by the wrong metrics.

One of the common things we see in the industry is overcrowded reporting and it’s important to understand that to be able to effectively report results, you need to be able to identify the right metrics to track. Unfortunately, we often see that businesses are making marketing and advertising decisions based on irrelevant information and not only is this a huge waste of money, but they’ve then missed out on results.

In this week’s episode, Jon is joined by Overdrive’s Senior Paid Media Account Manager Abi Carey to discuss the valuable lessons we’ve learnt so far since setting up our very own e-commerce business, The City Scooter and how they can be implemented to propel our clients business endeavours to new heights.

One of the best ways we can understand the pressures and stresses our clients go through day to day as a digital marketing agency is by putting ourselves in their shoes. So, why did we decide to go to the extreme and set up an e-commerce business as a team? It’s simple.

In order to acknowledge those trials and tribulations that e-commerce businesses experience daily, there is no better way to learn than by being able to fully immerse yourself into it. Not only did learning on the job offer practical application of knowledge, but it also allowed our whole team to tap into new skills, contextual understanding and adaptability.

Evolving Landscape of Paid Media: Navigating the User Journey and Scaling Success

Over the past few years, Paid Media has undergone significant advancements and become an essential tool for businesses to effectively connect with and captivate their desired audiences. However, the landscape of Paid Media is constantly developing, and businesses need to continuously adapt to stay ahead of the game.

A notable change is the growing importance of understanding the user journey beyond the initial click on an ad. In the past, marketers may have considered their job done once they successfully drove traffic to a landing page or website. But now, that's just the beginning of the story. What happens after the click is just as crucial, if not more so, in ensuring a campaign's success.

To truly capitalise on Paid Media campaigns, marketers must have a clear understanding of what happens after a user clicks on an ad. This involves tracking user behavior, analysing their interactions, and identifying potential pain points or barriers to conversion. By gaining insight into the user journey, marketers can optimize the entire conversion process, creating a seamless and engaging experience that leads to higher conversion rates.

Another significant change in the world of Paid Media is how marketers view campaign plateaus. In the past, a plateau might have been seen as a sign of failure or stagnation. However, experienced marketers now recognize plateaus as signs of a well-oiled machine that has achieved a certain level of efficiency and success and an opportunity to explore new markets, test new audiences, or expand into new territories. Scaling a successful campaign to reach a broader audience can lead to significant growth and increased revenue.

The world of Paid Media has evolved, and marketers must adapt their strategies to navigate this ever-changing landscape successfully. Understanding the user journey beyond the initial click and optimizing the conversion process are now vital components of a winning strategy.

Don't let your Paid Media campaigns plateau or miss out on potential growth opportunities. Contact Overdrive Digital today to supercharge your performance marketing strategy.

All I Want for Christmas Is a Flawless Digital Marketing Strategy: Your Guide to Q4 Success

You’re most likely thinking that we’re crazy, talking about Christmas Campaigns in September (this podcast was recorded in July too)… but there is a method to our madness. Q4 and Christmas present a golden opportunity for eCommerce retailers to capitalise on heightened consumer spending. However, the key to making the most of this season lies in meticulous planning of your digital marketing strategy. Which means for us, Christmas always comes early.

Below we delve into the key elements that can lead to a successful digital marketing campaign during this critical time. From early preparation and accurate tracking to creative authenticity and a strategic approach, each component plays a pivotal role in your quest for Q4 success.

Start planning early: Even though it might seem early, it's important to start planning for Q4 and the holiday season well in advance. Waiting until October or November can lead to last-minute panic and missed opportunities

Account Hygiene and Data Accuracy: Ensure that your tracking and data points are correct in your analytics and advertising platforms. This includes verifying that your tracking is accurate and pulling through the right data.

Segmentation and Campaign Structure: Consider how you want to segment your campaigns and ad sets, especially for Advantage Plus shopping campaigns, which can have multiple creatives. Plan your campaign structure ahead of time to avoid last-minute changes.

Creative Strategy: User-generated content (UGC) and authentic, relatable creative are key. Consider using UGC-style content or create authentic-looking ads with a clear brand presence. Avoid generic Black Friday-themed ads that lack brand identity.

Learning Periods: Understand that platforms like Meta Ads require a learning period for optimisation. Start your campaigns early to collect data and optimise before the peak season.

Differentiation and Targeting: Consider whether to participate in Black Friday, and if you do, think about how to position your products differently based on your audience and product category. Be strategic in your approach, and don't feel obligated to follow the same tactics as everyone else.

Building First-Party Data: Focus on building up your first-party data through lead generation campaigns. Offer value to users, such as discounts or freebies, to entice them to sign up and join your email list.

Maintaining Brand Identity: While offering promotions and discounts, don't compromise your brand's identity. Ensure that your Black Friday creative still reflects your brand's style and messaging.

Campaign Consistency: Avoid creating brand-new campaigns specifically for Black Friday. Instead, modify existing campaigns to incorporate Black Friday promotions. This approach minimises approval and learning periods.

Preparation for Q4: Remember that Q4 involves more than just Black Friday and Christmas. Plan for the entire holiday season, as costs rise and competition increases.

Christmas, or more specifically Q4 is often peak trading for the majority of eCommerce retailers, and digital marketing plays a pivotal role in shaping your success. By planning your Q4 and Christmas digital marketing strategy well in advance, you set the stage for a profitable season. A well-prepared strategy not only maximises your chances of success but also enhances your brand's reputation and customer loyalty. So, take the reins, plan ahead, and reap the rewards of a festive season well-executed.
