INFORMATION ABOUT COACH CHRIS KNIGHTON:
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Chris did not start running until his late twenties but quickly grew into a consistent top-10 finisher in road and trail races throughout New England. He has been a vegan athlete for his entire adult life and credits much of his success in sports to making healthy diet and lifestyle choices.
In 2014, Chris left a soul-crushing job to pursue his dreams. He thru-hiked the 2180-mile Appalachian Trail that summer and realized if he had the courage and capacity to accomplish this journey, he should easily be able to take on any life challenge.
Chris brings this mentally to his own running and coaching. He believes that the skills and confidence we develop to run faster marathons directly correlate to what’s needed to overcome any personal or professional challenge. Chris empowers his athletes to do what is necessary to go confidently in the direction of their dreams.
Chris received his USATF Level 1 Coaching Certification in 2019 and is Track & Field and Cross Country Coach at St. Mary Academy – Bay View in Riverside, Rhode Island.
Chris’s first book, Run Faster Marathons: The Proven Path to PR is available now on Amazon.

24 Apr 2023 | 153. 2023 Boston Marathon Race Review and Race Recap | 00:36:55
Welcome to a special episode of the Marathon Running Podcast, where we recap and review the 127th Boston Marathon or the 2023 Boston Marathon.
This year's race marked the 10th anniversary of the tragic bombing that shook the marathon world in 2013. In honor of the anniversary, a ceremony was held on Saturday, where the families of the victims and survivors came together to lay wreaths at the memorial sites near the finish line.
The Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the world and one of the most prestigious races, known for its challenging course, enthusiastic spectators, and rich history. The marathon route is a point-to-point course, starting in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and finishing in Boston's Copley Square.
The Boston Marathon has seen many iconic moments in its history, including Kathrine Switzer becoming the first woman to officially run the race in 1967, and the tragedy of the bombing in 2013.
To commemorate the anniversary, the docuseries "American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing" was released. The three-part series details the tragic events of the 2013 marathon and the hunt for the Tsarnaev brothers.
The professional field for the 2023 Boston Marathon included many top runners, such as Eliud Kipchoge, the world record holder. With Kipchoge in the field, the men's race was one of the fastest in Boston Marathon history.
However, 2022 winner Evans Chebet surged ahead in the Newton hills to repeat as champion. Hellen Obiri, a late entry in the elite women's field and running only her second marathon, finished strong to win the women's race.
The men's and women's wheelchair races were also fiercely competitive, with Switzerland's Marcel Hug winning his sixth men's wheelchair crown and Manuela Schar of Switzerland finishing first in the women's wheelchair race.
Overall, the 2023 Boston Marathon was a thrilling event with many memorable moments. It showcased the resilience and determination of the running community and honored the victims and survivors of the 2013 tragedy.

25 Sep 2023 | 175. Mental Training for Ultrarunning and (Marathon Running!) | 00:38:29
In this episode of the Marathon Running Podcast, we have the pleasure of welcoming Addie Bracy, the author of "Mental Training for Ultrarunning." While the book primarily focuses on ultrarunners, Addie reveals how its valuable mental training principles can be expertly applied to benefit marathon runners gearing up for their fall races. Throughout the episode, Addie delves into the intricate world of mental toughness for marathoners, drawing parallels between the unique challenges faced by ultrarunners and those encountered on the marathon course.
Addie starts by discussing the importance of understanding psychological breakdowns in ultrarunning (similar to marathon challenges) and how this knowledge can help runners overcome mental hurdles during races. She delves into the concept of "Finding Your Why for Running" and shares insights on how marathoners can discover their personal 'why' to stay motivated during grueling months of training.
Stress management, a critical element for athletes, is explored through the lens of Addie's book, particularly the stress response, which she explains in Chapter 3. She reveals how these insights can be invaluable for marathoners preparing for their races.
Chapters 4 through 8 are examined, including "Getting Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable" (a key concept for marathon runners), "Running the Mile You're In" (staying present during races), "Sticking to the Grind" (commitment to training), and "Adaptability" (adjusting to race-day conditions). Addie's explanations offer practical strategies for marathoners to apply these principles effectively.
Throughout the episode, Addie provides real-life examples and anecdotes of marathon runners who have successfully used her book's mental training strategies to enhance their race experiences. She also offers advice on breaking through mental barriers and staying strong during races.
Addie addresses the unique challenges faced by first-time marathoners, offering specific tips to manage pre-race nerves and uncertainty. Additionally, she highlights how both elite and recreational marathon runners can use the principles in her book to elevate their performance and overall enjoyment of marathon running.
As the episode wraps up, Addie leaves our listeners with a powerful message: the importance of mental training and preparation as they gear up for their fall marathons. Her insights offer valuable tools and exercises that marathoners can immediately implement to boost their mental toughness and ultimately achieve their race-day goals.

05 Feb 2024 | 194. Energy Metabolism Unveiled | 00:47:36
In this week's episode of the Marathon Running Podcast, we delve into the intricacies of Energy Metabolism with Dr. Patrick Davitt, PhD, shedding light on crucial aspects that impact every runner's performance. We start by exploring the fundamental definition of Energy Metabolism and the role of ATP, the energy currency of our cells. Fueling takes center stage as we discuss its paramount importance during training runs, emphasizing the need to maintain blood glucose levels and supply energy to working muscles. The intriguing question arises: Can running in a "depleted" state, without eating before a run, actually benefit our body's adaptation? Dr. Davitt unravels the complexities of liver-stored glycogen versus muscle-stored glycogen, detailing the nuances of fuel partitioning, substrate metabolism, and the burning of carbohydrates or fats. The conversation extends to the adaptation of running in a fasted state or consuming slow-absorbing foods, exploring their impact on handling the later miles in a marathon. Dr. Davitt provides insights into the prevailing trend of fueling all runs and challenges the notion, pointing out that exceeding 60g of carbohydrates per hour lacks supporting data for performance improvement. As an endurance runner, understanding the ideal fueling strategy becomes crucial, with protein playing a role in replenishment and repair, and varying macronutrient ratios based on training versus competition. The podcast delves into the peculiar phenomenon of changing tastes in energy gels mid-run, linking it to hormonal changes and attempts at maintaining homeostasis. Dr. Davitt shares his extensive research on Ucan gels, presenting a study that tested superstarch cornstarch-derived gels against other formulations. The findings highlight the importance of consistency in maintaining stable glucose levels throughout a run. The episode concludes with an exploration of the "glycogen sparing myth" and strategies to prevent the dreaded bonk during a marathon. Listeners gain valuable insights from Dr. Patrick Davitt's seven years of unbiased research on Ucan, emphasizing his dedication to understanding the science behind energy metabolism and its practical implications for marathon runners.

25 Oct 2021 | 75. Marathon Blues and Post Marathon Recovery | 00:22:05
In this episode we talk about two very important topics: 1. MARATHON BLUES and 2. POST MARATHON RECOVERY. The marathon blues, also known as post race depression, is a sentiment that a lot of runners experience after the race. We will give you a proper definition, and will talk to you about the symptoms, causes, and how to handle these feelings. When it comes to post marathon recovery, we see much advice on the internet about how much time to take off after your marathon, but very little information as to why those numbers are prescribed. So we look at some studies that will give us an idea how to translate the results of the studies into what is best for us runners as an individual. We will also talk about what things to do and what things not to do to speed up our recovery.
21 Jun 2021 | 57. The hidden training program with author Bryan Green | 00:43:41
In this episode spoke with Bryan Green, the author of Make the Leap - a sports psychology book for runners. Through his book, Bryan demonstrates that the key to unlocking one’s potential isn't in training harder or doing more sophisticated workouts. Rather, it's in thinking better about your training. Think better, train better. His book provides athletes and coaches a step-by-step guide to thinking more effectively about all aspects of training. We asked him about some of the main concepts, including how “the leap” works, the concept of “the hidden training plan”, as well as many definitions of words and concepts that - when applied to running - make us rethink how we should think.
