01 Nov 2021 | Elder Nii Gaani Aki Innini - A Return To Spirit, A Return To The Land | 01:07:26
This was the last of four incredible conversations in a series titled The Wisdom of Elders. Elder Nii speaks his message with a simplicity that cuts through the rationalizations and justifications we all sometimes hold on to, and he does it with kindness and sincerity. I encourage you to check out the work he’s doing in Canada and globally, and listen in as we discuss the challenges all of us face, the needs of the earth beneath our feet, and role of initiation, elders, women, and men in the days to come. Elder Dr. Dave Courchene — Nii Gaani Aki Innini (Leading Earth Man) — is a respected elder and knowledge keeper of the Anishinaabe Nation who has devoted his life to sharing Indigenous knowledge, carrying a message of hope, peace, and environmental stewardship. From lighting the sacred fire at the United Nations Earth Summit in 1992, to sharing the stage with spiritual leaders including the Dalai Lama, Elder Dr. Courchene’s leadership has had a global influence. In 2002, he founded the Turtle Lodge International Centre for Indigenous Education and Wellness, a sacred lodge recognized internationally and by the Assembly of First Nations and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs as one of the most important gathering places for Indigenous peoples in Canada. Individuals from around the world gather at the Turtle Lodge to facilitate intergenerational knowledge sharing, language revitalization, youth leadership training, and environmental solutions to climate change.
Courchene has built alliances with institutions, academics, and policymakers across the Canada. His work has been recognized with many prestigious honours, including the INDSPIRE National Aboriginal Achievement Award in Culture, Heritage, and Spirituality; an Honorary Doctor of Laws by the University of Winnipeg, the Volunteer Manitoba Award for Outstanding Community Leadership; the International Award of Excellence; the Aboriginal Circle of Educators Award; and the International Indigenous Leadership Award. He is a deeply respected elder, known for his ability to inspire dialogue and cross-cultural understanding between Indigenous knowledge keepers and western-trained scientists. His leadership is rooted in generosity, kindness, and a desire for peace and sustainability. In this mini-episode, I unpack how there's a kind of resilience and reliability that only shows up when you face what you're afraid of. When you don't, you're unconsciously learning you can't rely on you when things get difficult. Thanks to those of you on Instagram who asked me to clarify this, and don't forget to share this mini-episode with someone you feel will benefit. Did you enjoy the podcast? 31 Mar 2025 | Men's Work Session - Healing A Past Full Of Anger | 00:32:07
Talking points: anger, trauma, relationships This is an essential episode for two reasons. One, it clearly shows how emotions and behaviors get passed down not just in mind but in body. Two, this episode also shows there are men out there doing real work—and they're committed to it; my guest was already familiar with the somatic part of his feelings. If you grew up in a volatile family, this is doubly worth listening to. *** Tired of feeling like you're never enough? 22 Oct 2020 | Weekly Training: Practicing Memento Mori - The Awareness of Death | 00:21:02
This week’s mini-episode is a personal one, and about one of the most ancient and powerful rituals we as humans can practice: memento mori--being mindful of the inevitability of death. I dive into how memento mori works as a contemplative practice, its history, and why it’s more than just some personal development tool. Modern culture works hard to avoid even the idea of death, to the point where we water down some our most compelling stories and ideas. Tons of time is spent on practically forcing light and joy and life. But death helps inform us of how we are living--right here, right now. As always, let me know your take. 12 Apr 2021 | Eddie Capparucci - Porn Addiction and Healing The Inner Child | 00:53:49
Grab your notepad for this one. I wanted to have Eddie on the show because it’s somewhat rare to view sexual addiction (porn or otherwise) through the lens of Inner Child work. How we reveal and heal the wounds of our past is how we heal our present, and Inner Child work is an incredibly powerful framework to do that in. Eddie breaks down the Inner Child with nuance and deep intelligence, and it was a pleasure to have him on. If you or someone you know struggles with an addiction to porn or sex, man it forward and share this episode! Eddie Capparucci is a licensed therapist and is certified in the treatment of sexual and pornography addiction. He and his wife, Teri, have a private practice in Marietta, Georgia, working with men struggling with sex/porn addiction, as well as their wives who are dealing with betrayal. Among his many clients, Eddie has worked with professional athletes including NFL and MLB players and television personalities. He is the administrator of the websites www.MenAgainstPorn.org and www.SexuallyPureMen.com. He also has written for the blogs XXXChurch.com, Covenant Eyes, and Kingdom Works. He serves as the clinical director for the National Decency Coalition, an organization working to help limit the access of pornography to minors while educating about the harmful impact of pornography on individuals, relationships, and society. 04 Jul 2024 | Can Men Be Monogamous? Should They Be? | 00:22:27
Talking points: monogamy, relationships, culture Well, can they? This started with me wondering why certain men who are notorious for sleeping around are suddenly hopping on the monogamy train, and ended with me hitting the record button and getting curious. And honestly, this is way more complicated than a binary "men must/can or must not/can't be faithful partners". Listen in and let me know your thoughts. (00:00:00) - Intro and why I’m diving into this (00:05:41) - Where does the idea that men CAN’T be monogamous come from? (00:14:59) - Monogamous cultures can have benefits, even though modernity seems to disincentivize it (00:16:22) - Most men ultimately prefer monogamy, but there are underlying issues *** Pick up my book, Men's Work: A Practical Guide To Face Your Darkness, End Self-Sabotage, And Find Freedom: https://mantalks.com/mens-work-book/ Check out some free resources: How To Quit Porn | Anger Meditation | How To Lead In Your Relationship Build brotherhood with a powerful group of like-minded men from around the world. Talking points: sex, social media, conditioning, culture I know what it’s like to feel controlled by your own sexed-up brain. Like you’re losing hours of your day, mental bandwidth and more to clothes-less strangers on the internet. So I wanted to lay down some real talk about what I've done—and how hard it can be—to de-sexualize my brain and stay disciplined. I also get into some of the benefits it’s hard for me, my business, and my relationship. Listen in.

22 Dec 2022 | Getting Your Needs Met | 00:08:04
Let's make this one short and sweet. I've found in my years of working with men that many will very, very quickly start neglecting their own needs and desires in order to fulfill someone else's. 24 Aug 2023 | Does Modern Therapy Understand Men And Their Suffering? | 00:15:54
Fair warning, a focal point of this episode is suicide. Talking points: therapy, self-help, masculinity More men than ever are actively seeking help. They're going to therapy, they're working on themselves, they're doing "the work". I know because they come to me and people I know—either in the coaching or the therapeutic industry—by the thousands. And yet a significant percentage of them don't come out it "helped". Many don't come out at all. To be clear, I am NOT saying therapy as an industry is totally broken or something to ignore. But there ARE some things I think it could do better. 03 Dec 2020 | Weekly Traning: Finding Masculine Purpose | 00:22:52
I’m a big believer in balance, and I think the dance between yin and yang (or masculine/feminine, or whatever polarity names you like) provides a ton of insight. So, this week’s mini ep is all about giving your masculine energy purpose and direction. Masculine energy can help you structure your life, mind, and career, but—hard truth here—it’ll only get you so far by itself. Without external purpose, left to only serve itself, the masculine can slowly and unconsciously rationalize self-harm. Let me know your take; leave a rating or review! [10:10] The way men communicate has been disrupted by technology. [12:15] Do Millennial men lack grit? [13:15] There's a weird mix of resentment and entitlement in the average Millennial man. [16:40] Millennial men are seeking more of their masculine side when they come to Phil. [21:30] The ideal is to have both male and female traits. Values from the mother and grit from the father. [23:35] How does Phil help with developing grit? [30:05] Men are inclined to be loners, so Phil recommends joining a community to build a stronger bond with others. [32:10] Where does your self-worth come from? For men, it's tied up in activities and what they can do for other people. [35:25] Young men tend to have less competition with older men. [39:10] What’s the importance of being challenged? [41:45] Where is masculinity headed? It's going beyond blind competition. [46:50] Men's work tends to be much more open these days and more people are aware of it. [49:10] What does legacy look like to Phil?

04 Apr 2022 | Owen Marcus - What Emotional Intelligence Is, And Why Men Need It | 00:56:05
In modern masculine culture, there can be a lot of pressure to shut down, suppress, or numb out emotions. But just like everything else we can experience, there's tremendous amounts of information in what we're feeling. This is why I'm such a big advocate for somatic practices—really feeling in your body what's going on—and cultivating emotional intelligence. And it's why I sat with EVRYMAN co-founder Owen Marcus; he's an expert on this subject. For more than twenty-five years, Owen Marcus has worked with men’s groups to develop programs that give them the tools and teach them the skills to be successful men, celebrate their strengths, and live their lives fully and with joy. As co-founder of EVRYMAN, he and his support men worldwide. As the New York Times describes it: “CrossFit for emotions.” Owen Marcus overcame challenges such as Asperger’s Syndrome and Dyslexia to pursue his passion of helping others find their out-of-the-box solutions. However, it wasn’t until much later that he understood that in being free to be his own man, he was able to create and fulfill a life he designed. Along the way, he met many incredible men – men who struggled to create the lives they wanted. Owen observed the patterns in his corporate management and Mindfulness Stress Reduction seminars and then began working with groups of men to give them something new: how to be their own man. 11 Jul 2022 | Jack Donovan - The Way Of Men | 00:51:15
To put it bluntly, this was quite the conversation. I've found Jack Donovan's work to be both challenging, compelling, and ultimately fascinating—and it's not for the faint of heart. So naturally, I wanted him on the show. Listen in as Jack and I dig into what men of today are facing, modern culture's perspective on masculinity, balancing responsibility and freedom, the role of fathers, and of course, what really are the core tactical and mythic components of "masculinity" as a concept. Jack Donovan has been writing and speaking about masculinity, masculine philosophy and spirituality for over a decade. His foundational book, The Way of Men, has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide and has been translated into French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and Polish. His most recent book, Fire in the Dark, presents a primal system of masculine roles and shows how those roles have been repeated again and again throughout the history of myth and religion. Donovan is an occasional speaker and often appears on podcasts to discuss masculinity and the challenges faced by men who want to live masculine lives in the 21st Century. In 2021, he founded CHEST Magazine with Tanner Guzy to create an alternative to mainstream men’s magazines. CHEST features interviews with courageous and important American men who are speaking up for men and standing against the forces of chaos and darkness that threaten freedom. 08 Aug 2024 | Why Women Avoid Accountability (And How To Make It Happen) | 00:16:24
Talking points: accountability, relationships Before anything else, not all women struggle with this. But some who do (and the men who love them) have asked me to speak on this. You’ve probably seen the memes or heard a story or two, but it’s always better to actually do some thinking. Instead of interviewing a guest on this episode I’m the one in the hot seat. This is an interview that I did with Bryan Reeves on the Men This Way podcast. Normally I don’t do this but I really felt like this is an important conversation. We talk about the challenges that men face when it comes to dealing with change and overcoming struggle. I share some of my personal journey in dealing with this resistance. I also share my perspective on why so many men struggle and tools that men can use to create lasting change in their lives. 30 Jan 2023 | Jeremie Lotemo - Navigating America, Masculinity, And Partnership | 01:12:35
Talking points: transition, moving from the Congo to America, equality, masculinity, and relationships. This was a phenomenal conversation. Full stop. Jeremie and I cover a lot of ground, and I'm grateful to have his insight and perspective on men's work. It's nuanced, clear, and deeply authentic. Jeremie Lotemo is a transformation coach helping clients create lasting change by examining the stories and beliefs that influence them on an unconscious level. He works to help them reestablish safety in the body in order to recognize these beliefs and release them completely. Before becoming a coach, Jeremie was an account manager for one of the fastest-growing marketing agencies in Atlanta, eventually developing his own agency. For years, he helped clients use advertising to influence the behavior of their customers. This led him to analyze how much of his own life, choices, and ambitions were a product of someone else’s story. He left advertising and now uses his skills to help others write a story that’s entirely their own. 24 Mar 2025 | Michael Sartain - Moving Beyond The Stereotypes | 01:05:50
Talking points: relationships, evolutionary psychology, culture You know it, I know it, and Michael Sartain knows it: there are a LOT of men out there facing extreme difficulty. I wanted to pick Michael’s brain on how to help men understand why this is, but from the perspective of evolutionary psychology, and the boots-on-ground experience of a fellow coach. I appreciate Michael’s ability to follow (and focus) the data without getting lost in reactionary antics. Listen in. (00:00:00) - How Michael works with men (00:13:13) - What makes evolutionary psychology such a charged subject? (00:25:40) - Why risk is important for men (00:31:36) - Strategies to boost your risk tolerance (00:39:02) - The difficulty of modern male relationships, and staying neutral (00:48:42) - Does the unwillingness to take risk impact relationships? (00:53:23) - On status, Bonnie Blue, and what most don’t get about the “bottom third” of men Michael Sartain’s journey from a studious kid in Dallas, TX, to a leading expert in high-status networking and masculine self-improvement is nothing short of transformative. He grew up in contrasting environments; a comfortable family life, but a high school marked by gangs and poverty. Michael found refuge in academia, eventually earning a BBA from UT-Austin while nurturing a passion for diverse subjects like physics and psychology. The events of September 11, 2001, ignited his patriotic spirit, propelling him into the US Air Force as a KC135 navigator, rising to the rank of captain. It was here he honed leadership skills and experienced the profound impact of true accountability and integrity. In 2019, he founded Men Of Action, a coaching community that has transformed the lives of over 2,000 men. Through his podcasts and public appearances, Michael continues to inspire, emphasizing leadership, social dynamics, and personal growth. 16 May 2022 | Doug McKinley - The Shifting Landscape Of Leadership | 00:44:37
Does effectively leading a company have anything in common with leading your own personal development? Of course, but what parts? This is why I brought in Doug McKinley, whose career has allowed him to bridge an individual psychological practice with coaching execs and organization heads. We cover adversity and bouncing back from it, the similarities between self-leadership and leadership within an organization, the ways men find success (or hardship) in both, some of the conflicts between what society tells about leadership and what actual effective leading looks like, and how it all. comes. back. to. discipline. Doug McKinley spent the first 15 years of his vocational life serving as a clinical psychologist and founded his own group practice in the early 90s. He was honored to be able to assist clients in the relief of unnecessary suffering and finding a healing path forward. While this was fulfilling in its own right, Doug knew that he wanted to do more; the collective insights of 30 years of investing in people have led him to the conclusion that clarity and culture are not simply “nice to have.” After meeting Pat Williams, renowned leadership coach and author, at a conference on marriage counseling, Doug transitioned from clinical psychology into serving clients as an executive leadership development coach and consultant. Part of this transition included moving on from his clinical practice and founding an executive coaching firm. In 2012, Doug created a successful consulting company with a business partner that they would run together until selling it in late 2017. McKinley currency runs DLM Pathways, an organization dedicated to guiding leaders increase their self-awareness, discover their purpose, and develop their competencies. Doug holds a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from the Adler Professional School of Psychology and a Master's Degree in counseling from Wright State University. He has earned the Master Certified Coach designation from the International Coach Federation and is a practicing member of ICF. Doug is the author of The Resiliency Quest: A Journey of Personal Leadership Development for the Thriving Physician, and the co-author of Go Positive: Lead to Engage. He’s also authored several training program manuals that focus on leadership development. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

15 Feb 2021 | Cinema Therapy - Marvel, Archetypes, and Masculinity in Movies | 00:49:24
What makes villians like Thanos and Killmonger so compelling? Is there a trend in how our culture looks at heroes? What's the modern idea of a hero even look like? I connected with Cinema Therapy over Zoom, and we nerd out on the intersection of psychology, film, and culture. We cover masculinity in movies and its history, what Marvel is doing right, Heath Ledger’s Joker versus Joaquin Phoenix’s, and why superheroes are so important right now. This was a fun, compelling interview. Alan and Jonathan are brilliant, funny, and genuinely wholesome people. There’s also a recipe for a mean chocolate smoothie if you listen in close. Cinema Therapy is hosted by licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright. They discuss how movies can be used to improve your life, and how to watch movies with your brain turned on. Also, there are jokes.

22 Jul 2024 | David Kessler - Finding Meaning In Grief And Loss | 00:58:50
Talking points: grief, loss, relationships, masculinity, anger I met David at a psychotherapy symposium a while back, and it wasn’t long before we were sharing some of the things we’ve grieved. He is the author of six books, including the new bestselling book, Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief. He co-authored two books with Elisabeth Kubler Ross, including On Grief and Grieving updated her 5 stages for grief. His first book, The Needs of The Dying received praise from Saint (Mother) Teresa. David’s personal experience as a child witnessing a mass shooting while his mother was dying in a hospital helped him begin his journey. For most of his life, David has taught physicians, nurses, counselors, police, and first responders about the end of life, trauma, and grief. He facilitates talks, workshops and retreats for those experiencing grief. However, despite his vast knowledge on grief, his life was turned upside down by the sudden death of his twenty-one-year-old son. It inspired him to write his newest book, Finding Meaning. David’s volunteer work includes being an LAPD Specialist Reserve for traumatic events as well as having served on the Red Cross’s disaster services team. He worked for over a decade in a three-hospital system, and was even trained for bio-terrorism events and epidemics/pandemics. 13 Mar 2023 | Boyd Varty - Lion Tracking, Meaning Making, And Healing Trauma | 00:53:31
Talking points: working in/with the wild, initiation, trauma, what nature teaches you, masculinity This has been one of my most anticipated guests of all time. Like, years. An incredible storyteller, a man with a mighty heart and passion for everything wilderness, this is an episode I encourage you to share with the men in your life. Seriously. The wildlife and literacy activist Boyd Varty, author of the memoir Cathedral of the Wild, had an unconventional upbringing. Born to a family of conservationists, Boyd grew up on Londolozi Game Reserve in the South African wilderness, a place where man and nature strive for balance, where perils exist alongside wonders. Founded more than 90 years ago as a hunting ground, Londolozi was transformed into a nature reserve beginning in 1973 by Varty’s father and uncle, visionaries of the restoration movement. But it wasn’t just a sanctuary for the animals; it was also a place for ravaged land to flourish again and for the human spirit to be restored. When Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years of imprisonment, he came to the reserve to recover. Since childhood, Boyd shared his home with lions, leopards, snakes, and elephants and has spent his life in apprenticeship to the wisdom of nature. Boyd survived a harrowing black mamba encounter, a debilitating bout with malaria, even a vicious crocodile attack, but his biggest challenge was a personal crisis of purpose. As a university student, he studied psychology and ecology, supplementing his education by learning martial arts in Thailand, hiking through the jungles of the Amazon, and apprenticing to a renowned tracker from the Shangaan tribe, deepening his intimate knowledge of the natural world. Boyd grew up speaking the local language and learning the true meaning of coexistence between people and with nature. 22 May 2023 | Traver Boehm - How Do Men Stay Anchored In Modern Times? | 01:17:51
Talking points: AI, gender wars, masculinity, culture, relationships, dating, archetypes, myth All I can tell you is: this is a big one! Traver and I did an episode exchange for this one, and we always (I mean always) have great, wide-ranging conversations. It’s one of the bes gifts that comes from having old friends. This is the episode to listen to if you want to hear directly from two men’s coaches who have hands on experience with what men are undergoing these days, and some of the ways we can regulate and manage what seems to be ever-increasing chaos. [00:03:52] - How social media conversations have gotten a lot more intense—and why Traver Boehm is the author of the books “Today I Rise” and “Man UNcivilized”. He’s a two-time TEDx speaker, men’s coach, and the founder of the UNcivilized Men’s Movement. He’s helped men worldwide to become UNcivilized as they wake up to the power of their hearts, the brilliance of their bodies, and the wisdom of their souls so they can blaze their own path by uniquely blending both the primal and the divine within them. He is dedicated to doing his part to help end the suffering in men, and the suffering caused by men, by guiding them through their own journey into an actualized version of masculinity. 15 Aug 2022 | Men's Work Session - Healing Your Relationship To Anger | 00:36:13
(Apologies in advance, something was up with the audio for this one) Now and then, I put out the call and feature a session with someone I’ve never worked with before. This work took place over the course of an hour or so, and we've shorted it here for easier listening. My guest today is someone who grew up in a hostile environment, and his end result as an adult was a feeling of numbness and a hard time recognizing the emotions he felt. We work to identify and give voice to what he's feeling, particularly his anger and sadness. I've wrestled with numbness too, and I'm sure there are a lot of guys out there in similar situations. So listen in and don't forget to share with someone you feel might benefit from this kind of work. Did you enjoy the podcast? I try not to wrestle too much with political topics on the show, but there have been a number of men—many of them former military—who asked me to at least say something about the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the extreme range of reactions to what happened. 27 Sep 2021 | Francis Weller - Initiation (And Society Without It) | 01:14:13
In this episode, Francis and I discuss the role of community in processing grief, the cult of specialness, our addiction to progress, using beauty and ritual to stay mentally healthy, and how obsession with individualism has crippled our ability to feel like we belong. That’s just the tip of the iceberg with a man like Francis, and it’s a great honor to hear him speak with such depth and clarity on these complex subjects. Francis Weller, MFT, is a psychotherapist, writer, and soul activist. He is a master of synthesizing diverse streams of thought from psychology, anthropology, mythology, alchemy, indigenous cultures, and poetic traditions. Author of The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief, The Threshold Between Loss and Revelation, (with Rashani Réa), and In the Absence of the Ordinary: Essays in a Time of Uncertainty, he has introduced the healing work of ritual to thousands of people. He founded and directs WisdomBridge, an organization that offers educational programs that seek to integrate the wisdom from indigenous cultures with the insights and knowledge gathered from western poetic, psychological, and spiritual traditions. As a gifted therapist and teacher, Francis has been described as a jazz artist, improvising and moving fluidly in and out of deep emotional territories with groups and individuals, bringing imagination and attention to places often held with judgment and shame. Francis received a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay and two Master’s Degrees from John F. Kennedy University in Clinical Psychology and Transpersonal Psychology. His writings have appeared in anthologies and journals exploring the confluence between psyche, nature, and culture. His work was featured in The Sun magazine (October 2015) the Utne Reader (Fall 2016) and the Kosmos Journal. (Winter 20201) He is a frequent presenter and keynote speaker at conferences, bringing insight, poetry and a breath of humor to his talks. Francis is currently on staff at Commonweal Cancer Help Program, co-leading their week-long retreats with Michael Lerner. He has taught at Sonoma State University, the Sophia Center in Oakland, and has been the featured teacher at the Minnesota Men's Conference. He is currently completing his third book, A Trail on the Ground: The Geography of Soul. He has created three CD sets, two focusing on healing shame and one on “Restoring the Soul of the World.” His latest offerings are a 10-session audio series on "Living a Soulful Life and Why It Matters." and "The Alchemy of Initiation: Soul Work and the Art of Ripening."

How do men work through trauma, abuse, abandonment, and sexual abuse? In this unique, first of it's kind episode, I interview a client who has faced and been through many of these things. Much of it has been talked about and worked through in a therapeutic or coaching setting, but some still needs to be addressed. In this setting, the anonymous client and I talk about his journey. He shares stories from his childhood and connects the dots to how his past shaped his future.
