14 Jul 2022 | Start here before shutting down your business | 00:26:05
We’ve been having a lot of high level conversations about what it means to start up a business, and I would be remiss if we did not discuss this really important topic of what it means to shut down your business. Here’s the thing: just because you are *done* with your business, doesn’t mean that you can just *stop* your business. And, if you don’t think you want to shut down your business - that’s okay, too. You still need to know this information. In this episode, we’re covering:
And, at the end of today’s episode, I leave you with a bit of homework, as always, because I want you to start implementing this today! Y’all ready? Let’s do this! >>> Thanks for listening to this episode. I hope it was illuminating! 15 Dec 2022 | Your One-Stop Shop - A Guide to Property Ownership (Part 1) | 00:40:40
Today’s episode is meant to help you get a handle on what it means to own something - at work, at home, in your business. I want you to understand what can be owned (and not) - and why. The WHY is so important, y’all, because if you don’t know, you could inadvertently lose rights to something and I don’t want that for you. (And for those of you who have never seen or heard these terms before: usus, fructus, abusus 🥰) Over these next handful of episodes, we’re going to talk about the basics of property and ownership of property. We're going to talk about intellectual property - like marks and copyrights and patents (oh my!). And, we’ll take a look back at the different kinds of laws - state and federal and international - and where to go to get the information you need to protect yourself and your assets. I want you to understand what happens when you're working across borders - state and sovereign nations alike - so that you can get the most out of your working relationships. At the end, as always, I leave you with a bit of homework to start taking action today. Y’all ready? Let’s do this! >>> My mission is to help service-based professionals figure out exactly what they want, realize it’s 100% within reach, and create a simple, actionable plan that will get them there. 31 Oct 2024 | How to Use Yoga to Prepare Body, Mind, and Spirit for Birth with Bec Conant {Ep. 75} | 00:55:23
📚 Psst - Links to the Free E-Books are ONLY available below in the show notes! In this episode, we welcome Bec Conant, an expert in the prenatal and birth field. Bec is the founder of ‘Om Births,' an online program for pregnant people and new parents. With over 20 years of experience teaching prenatal yoga, the discussion covers various aspects of the birthing process, preparation, and recovery. Bec shares her journey from a career in dance and movement to becoming a prenatal yoga instructor and birth doula. The conversation delves into the importance of physical and mental preparation for birth, the intersection of yoga with the birthing experience, and how new parents can continue to care for themselves postpartum. The episode also touches on Bec's new book 'The Om Births Approach,' her techniques, and the support she offers through online prenatal and postnatal yoga classes. I highly encourage you to explore Bec's resources, including free eBooks and her main book available on Amazon and her Publisher’s site.
👉🏽 COMPELLING EPISODE QUOTES FROM BEC: “The roadmap to motherhood doesn't stop. When you birth the baby, that's just one very, very cool rest stop.” “Life is inherently uncertain. How we interact with that uncertainty is the foundation of every meditation practice, but it's also really the story of how your life unfolds.” “Every contraction you fight is one you have to do over.” “If you go into a yoga class and you're not a fan of the teacher, or it doesn't feel right, don't assume that it's yoga that's the problem. Don't write off the whole practice entirely. Assume it's them. Assume the teacher was the issue.” “The focus of yoga really wants to be just feeling your body move, just feeling what it feels like to be in different shapes, to breathe in a different way, to shift your attention from our everyday, very outward, very judgmental, very categorizing lens to a more inward, compassionate, accepting quality.”

30 Dec 2021 | My Favorite Ways to Stay Ethical: The Basics of Working Series | 00:36:26
This week's episode is the third of four episodes in the conversation in our Basics of Working Series, y’all, and the topic is ethics: ethics in your profession, personally, and what it means to work with someone outside of your profession and why ethics matters. Together, we’ll cover:

Add to that the fact that I am a Certified Ethics Trainer with the State of Louisiana’s Board of Ethics, and you’d be forgiven if you thought I was an ethics buff. It doesn't matter what you do or where you've worked, you've likely seen or experienced discrimination, harassment, retaliation - or all three. Today's episode helps you identify and gives actionable steps in how to avoid it. Together, we’ll cover:
Over the years, in my work with clients and students too, I’ve found that there’s some confusion about employment law issues - whether there’s discrimination or harassment, when you can do something about it. And, I have to be honest, it can be super muddy. This is why living, working, and being in integrity matters - and why being clear about who you are, what you want, and why you want it matters. 10 Mar 2023 | On Getting Work + Clients - First, Your Reputation (Part 1) | 00:36:02
Today, we are revisiting what it means to have a reputation, what it means to have a brand, and what it means to have communications and clear expectations with people. And fun, fun - this is the start of four episodes about getting work and getting clients! I wanted to start with your brand and your reputation because I think a lot of people think, “oh, I wanna go get all these clients and I need this work and I need all these things!” and we don't often stop to think about what the experience will be and how we wanna show up. And that, I think, is really something worth revisiting. So, before you start getting work and clients, let's focus on your brand and your reputation, shall we? In this episode, we’re talking about:
One of the things that I think is really important is that it doesn't matter how much amazing work you do - if you're not out there, people don't know you, they don't know you exist. And it doesn't matter how much amazing work you do if you are not a nice person. People aren’t gonna wanna work with you, right? People want to know what you stand for, who you are as a person, why you do what you do. And so my hope is that you’ll look deeper today for a little more clarity. I'd love to know what resonates with you today. Feel free to reach out to me and make sure you go grab those free scripts to help you start boundaries and clean up your reputation and brand today! Link is below in the Resources section! At the end, as always, I leave you with a bit of homework to start taking action today. Y’all ready? Let’s do this! Here are just a few key takeaways and quotes from this episode - listen for more! 👉🏽 Key Takeaways: Embrace Your Pace: Recognize that personal timelines matter more than societal pressures. Progress is progress, regardless of the speed. Self-Love vs. Self-Soothing: Distinguish between self-care and self-love. Elevate your well-being by setting boundaries, making aligned decisions, and focusing on what truly matters. Baby Steps to Sustain Change: Avoid the crash and burn of grand “new” year resolutions. Implement tiny, sustainable goals year-round for lasting transformation. Motivation vs. Discipline: Acknowledge that motivation is fleeting. It's the tiny steps and structures that turn our lives into what we want them to be." "Embrace the uncertainty, get excited about yourself, and focus on the link between wellness and professional competency in 2024." "We overestimate what we can do in a day and underestimate what we can achieve in a year." 12 Jan 2023 | Set Yourself Apart from the Competition: Branding with Trade Names and Trademarks (and when to use the dba, ™ and ®) (Part 3) | 00:28:11
Today’s episode is all about what it means to set your business apart from your competition, and we’re coming at it from the context of a Trade Name and then a category of Intellectual Property called Marks (which includes Trademarks, Service Marks, and Sound Marks). I’m going to explain the difference between each of these, how they fit into the puzzle piece of your brand (like a dba) and when you can and cannot use the ™ and ® (trademark and registered symbols)! Since today is a continuation of our discussion about intellectual property, my hope is that you’re starting to catch on to all the nuances of intellectual property and how it fits into the larger arena of property rights as a whole. If you’re new to the series, you might pop back a couple of episodes to listen after today’s episode. My purpose for today’s episode is to help you understand not only what each of these types of intellectual property are, but when you should protect them, as well. 05 Jan 2023 | The Most Common (and Most Important) Types of Intellectual Property: The Basics (Part 2) | 00:13:51
Today is Episode 38, and it’s a continuation of our discussion about property. In our last episode, I introduced the concept of property to you - how you own it, how you get it, how you get rid of it, how to share it. Where property is a tangible or an intangible thing we can own, intellectual property can also be tangible or intangible, but no matter what, intellectual property stems from an IDEA. So, all those things you own - well, they are all based on an IDEA someone once had. And I can’t wait to dive into it with you. STARTING A PODCAST * TOP LESSONS * ENTREPRENEURSHIP * CREATIVITY What do food blogs, lawyers, and sleep all have in common? You’re gonna find out! It is Episode 51, y'all, and I’m sharing some behind the scenes of what you might now know about me. 07 Apr 2022 | My best advice before starting a new business (or changing the one you run) | 00:31:50
I know you’ve heard the stats about small businesses - around 20% close in the first year, 50% close after five years, and a mere 30% make it to 10 years or longer. These numbers are staggering, yet we seem to take the reasons they end at face value. We’ve been told the reason they don’t make it is because of funding, marketing, leadership, planning. But I think the real reason is something much simpler than that. Something that no one talks about. Something that I personally - and professionally - know is the real source of a successful business, and it’s a lot simpler than you think. In this episode, we’re covering:

02 Jun 2022 | Are Your Services Destroying Your Business? | 00:28:28
Have you ever considered whether your services might be destroying your business? My guess is probably not; it’s easy to ignore. I started this podcast because I wanted business owners, entrepreneurs, and those who are making decisions inside of other people’s businesses - managers, leaders, partners - and those striving to be promoted into those positions - to understand what it actually takes to attract the right people, projects, and pay with clarity, confidence, and courage. My purpose is to help you find yours. To find what lights you up, to help you navigate all the pieces of what it means to ACTUALLY run a business. And nothing matters in your business if you don’t know what SERVICES matter to you. Remember, this is all about RECONNECTING your intellectual self to your emotional self. At the end of today’s episode, I leave you with a bit of homework, as always, because I want you to start implementing this today! In this episode, we’re covering:

26 Jan 2023 | © is for Copyright: Fair Use, Plagiarism & Infringement, OH MY! (Part 4) | 00:39:30
© 👉🏽 If you’re not sure whether you have a copyright, whether you can use someone else’s work, and if so, how much, then you’re in the right place! We’re continuing the discussion about intellectual property, and particularly, intellectual property rights related to copyrights. This is not legal advice and this is NOT exhaustive. This is just a starter kit of sorts to help you start to get your legs under you, to help you start to understand the concept of copyright, fair use, plagiarism and infringement. All of the information you could ever need is on the US Copyright Office’s website, which I will link below. The truth is, we could have an entire podcast solely based on the Copyright Act and US Copyright law - there are 480 some odd pages of it! But we won’t do that, because my concern is only that you get introduced to the concepts, so you know when you need help, to go to a lawyer and get advice, guidance, and protect yourself. And, since today is a continuation of our discussion about intellectual property, my hope is that you’re starting to catch on to all the nuances of intellectual property and how it fits into the larger arena of property rights as a whole. If you’re new to the series, you might pop back a couple of episodes to listen after today’s episode. My purpose for today’s episode is to help you understand not only what copyrights are, but when you should protect them, as well (even if you don’t own it!). 02 Jun 2023 | In Tandem: How to Run a Business While Married (ft Robert & Kay Lee Fukui) | 00:53:34
ENTREPRENEURSHIP * BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP * MARRIAGE * COMMUNICATION I have an amazing episode for you, today! We've got Robert and Kay Lee Fukui and they have just released a book called Tandem, the Married Entrepreneur's Guide for Greater Work-Life Balance. This conversation will help you apply all of the stuff we’ve been talking about here on the show - from relationships with people to how you take care of yourself, to setting clear expectations, understanding what you have control over and don't. One of the things I love about Robert and Kay Lee is that they're not just looking at the business as a business. They're looking at the business as a living, breathing extension of you as a person, and if you own a business with a partner, a business partner, or your spouse, that extra extension also includes the extension of who you are as people. Also, this is part one of two (which we'll talk about inside of the episode). For now, grab your pen and paper, especially if you own a business with somebody else, or you run someone’s business. Or maybe go grab that person, hand them a cup of coffee or something stronger, and sit down, listen, and catch those aha moments that I know you're gonna have. Make a list of things you want to talk about for yourself - to help you be better, and for the business and structures to be stronger. Y’all ready? BIG takeaways are coming. Some that can really change the trajectory of your career and your work. At the end, as always, I leave you with a bit of homework to start taking action today. Y’all ready? Let’s do this! 22 Sep 2022 | What You Need to Know Before You Sign: Contracts Basics - Including Podcast Contracts, too! (Part 1) | 00:34:02
In today’s episode - the first of five episodes in this contracts series - I’m going to introduce you to the basics of a contract. And y’all: contracts are my favorite! Contracts are the one thing you can do and always be happy with the outcome. Contracts are the law of the relationship between you and your client. Because no matter what you discussed on the phone, in that email or text message, whatever, once you write it in the contract, it’s understood that everything you mean is inside that document - the contract. You have to be careful from that moment onward, to make sure you stick to what you said - do not deviate, do not make an exception “just this one time” … Stick to your contract and you’ll get out what you put in. And for those of you who do work because of contracts, but aren’t the one who negotiates the contract, that’s okay, but you still need to know what the contract says so you can fulfill your obligations and keep everybody happy. In this episode, we’re covering:

20 Apr 2023 | Sidestepping the Good Ole Boys Club: Winning Government Contracts as a DBE through RFPs (On Getting Work + Clients - Part 4) | 00:14:24
If you’ve ever wondered how people get government contracts (and how you can cash in on this, even if you’re not in the Good Ole Boys Club), then this episode is for you! It’s Episode 46 y'all and the last one before we start to shift into the next phase of this podcast, into the next leveling up of What Would Sheila Say and I am soooo excited for what’s to come. One of the things I felt really strongly about sharing with you is this concept of government contracts, DBEs and RFPs. I will go through these acronyms in the episode, but I want to tell you WHY this is the case - why I chose this topic. Most people do NOT know about government or nonprofit or corporate contracts, which means quite often that the same people and companies year after year get a slew of contracts from local, state, federal government, and I don’t like that. I want us to have diversity in how our government serves us, and I want to make sure that marginalized communities and those who are not at the table, who are not normally “in the know” - you know, those good ole boys club backroom deals - KNOW about the ways to get to that table. And government contracts are a surefire way to be in the know, to be AT the table - but you have to know they exist, and it’s a way to make money and serve your community - and if you never know, you can never put your hat in the ring. So today, we’re talking about getting GOVERNMENT and NONPROFIT and CORPORATE clients through bids, and proposals. We’re also going to touch on the fact that once you get those, often, the doors open up to you in ways you can’t even imagine, that then makes it easier for you to get more traditional clients, too. And if you aren’t sure where to find these things wherever you live, I’m your girl. DM me, email me. I got you. We’ll find those resources together, okay? At the end, as always, I leave you with a bit of homework to start taking action today. Y’all ready? Let’s do this! Resources from the Show

Together, we explore the vulnerability of creativity, establishing a daily creative habit, overcoming societal pressures, and the therapeutic power of creative expression. Mike shares his personal transformation from ministry burnout to becoming a creative professional through a 365-day art challenge, highlighting the importance of reflection, small consistent actions, and systematic approaches to maintain creative momentum. Listen in to gain practical advice on integrating creativity into your life, reconnecting with personal passions, and leveraging tools like the Daily Creative Habit journal to foster continuous growth and innovation. 05:32 Mike's Journey and Creative Philosophy 13:17 The Daily Creative Habit 21:32 Rediscovering Art and Creativity 38:47 Integrating Life and Creativity 40:31 Overcoming Creative Blocks 47:13 Consistency and Prioritization 59:40 Resources for Creativity
👉🏽 KEY TAKEAWAYS Daily Creative Habit as a Solution: Mike emphasizes the importance of establishing a "daily creative habit" to foster consistency in creative work, especially for those feeling stuck or overwhelmed by other priorities. Everyone is Creative: The episode expands the definition of creativity beyond traditional arts, explaining that creativity manifests in various forms like organizing, cooking, writing, or even building systems. Overcoming Creative Repression: The podcast discusses how many individuals, especially lawyers and other professionals, suppress their creativity because of societal or familial expectations. The message is clear: it's never too late to reignite creative passions. Intentional Creative Time: Creativity doesn’t just happen on its own; you must intentionally carve out time and space for creative exploration, even if you’re living a busy or demanding life. Transformative Power of Creativity: The episode shares personal stories about how reconnecting with creative practices helped the speaker and others rediscover joy, passion, and a sense of purpose, highlighting how creativity can bring healing and fulfillment.
👉🏽 COMPELLING EPISODE QUOTES "I help people establish what I call a daily creative habit. It’s for those who want to engage with their creativity but have lost touch, or who have a creative goal yet struggle with consistency." - Mike Brennan "We need to expand our definition of what creativity is so that it’s more inclusive, not just confined to painting or performing arts. You can be creative in how you organize, cook, or even build systems." - Mike Brennan "So many lawyers are repressed creatives. They’re told, ‘You can’t make money with that. It’s a nice hobby but not a career.’ And then they choose a path like law, never realizing how creative they actually are." - Sheila M. Wilkinson "There was a time when you created something just because it brought you joy. What if you returned to that place, where your work wasn’t tied to clients or expectations, but simply to you?" - Mike Brennan "Creativity is about showing up, doing a lot of bad work before you get to the good, and going on a journey of self-discovery and curiosity." - Mike Brennan

06 Apr 2023 | Marketing Yourself & Getting Clients through an Online Platform like Fiverr, Toptal & Upwork: What You Need to Know Before Saying Yes (On Getting Work + Clients - Part 3) | 00:14:52
If you don’t know whether you should join an online platform to get freelance work, or clients, then this episode is for you! Today, we’re talking about whether you should try to get clients through an online bidding platform, and we’re also going to touch on the ways that you can get traditional clients, not on those platforms. Here’s the deal - only YOU know what’s right for you. I’m here to give you some ideas, some things to consider, and maybe some new perspectives that you didn’t have before about getting clients the traditional way, versus getting them from these platforms. Last time, we talked about simplicity. And I am hoping you see how that dovetails into today’s discussion because clarity is what is going to help you decide whether to get on a platform to sell your services. Seriously. And if you need help figuring out who you are, what you want, how to get to the place you’re dying to go - I’m your girl. DM me, email me. I got you. At the end, as always, I leave you with a bit of homework to start taking action today. Y’all ready? Let’s do this! Tag me, follow me, and DM me with your thoughts and questions:

10 Feb 2023 | What’s a Patent? Understanding the Basics of Utility, Design + Plant Patents (Part 5) | 00:12:18
In today’s Episode (41), we’re continuing the discussion about intellectual property, and particularly, intellectual property rights related to PATENTS. This is the last major type of intellectual property that we’ll discuss for now, so let’s dig in! If you’re new to the series, you might pop back a couple of episodes to listen after today’s episode. As I’ve said before - this is not legal advice, and this is NOT exhaustive. This is just the basics - to help you understand the basics - it’s the bare minimum. All of the information you could ever need is on the US Patent and Trademark Office’s website, which I link below the show notes, and there’s also a really informative 45-minute video that I’m linking, too - it’s super fun, you’ll love it. My concern is to get introduced to Patents, so you know when you need help, to know when to ask for help, to go to a lawyer and get advice, guidance, and protect yourself. In this episode, I specifically touch on the three types of patents: design patents, utility patents, and plant patents. There’s a lot here that I could talk about, but there’s only so much I want to go into right now - we can go deeper in the future. Right now, today, we are focusing on the foundations, and you’ll be happy to know that patents are a lot more straightforward than you think. My purpose is to help you understand the basics of patents, and when you should protect them, as well! At the end, as always, I leave you with a bit of homework to start taking action today. Y’all ready? Let’s do this! >>> My mission is to help licensed and certified, service-based professionals figure out exactly what they want, realize it’s 100% within reach, and create a simple, actionable plan that will get them there. 23 Feb 2023 | Protecting Yourself & Your Property: Understanding State, Federal and International Law (Part 6) | 00:21:02
In today’s Episode (42), we are wrapping up the initial series on property and intellectual property, and I am really excited about helping you understand local, state, federal, and international a bit better, and how each plays an important role in protecting yourself, your property, and particularly, your intellectual property. I’m going to walk you through where to find each of these kinds of laws, how they are similar to each other - and a bit different than what you might think they are. And, since I am in Louisiana, I will talk about Louisiana law from a state law standpoint, but the places that I tell you about to look for the law are going to be the same if you’re in a different state, so don’t freak out - just use the same logic for looking it up. There are a handful of links in the show notes, so go use those! As always, there’s a ton we could go deep about, but right now, we are focusing on the foundations of law. Just like most of what we talk about, the law is a lot more straightforward than you think it is - or lawyers want you to believe it is. What I want to do is to help educate you about where to go looking for that information, and so that you know enough about it to know when you need help. At the end, as always, I leave you with a bit of homework to start taking action today. Y’all ready? Let’s do this! >>> My mission is to help service-based professionals figure out exactly what they want, realize it’s 100% within reach, and create a simple, actionable plan that will get them there. In today’s episode with Dr. Eugene Choi, we talk about why this happens, how to shift it, and what you need to do every single day to be in your executive state - your thriving state! He calls it the Transformational Neurohacking Program. Together, Eugene and I go down a rabbit hole of the brain, aha moments, making decisions, regretting decisions, and more. We talk about what he found that actually helps people create the change and results they're looking for, and why brain science was a key piece to leaving behind a successful career as a pharmacist supervisor. 👉🏽 Key Takeaways Always Double or Triple Your Time Estimates: When planning tasks or events, overestimate the time required, as unexpected things can—and often do—happen. Use Your Own Tools: Even as a professional helping others, you need to apply the same tools and strategies to your own life during difficult times. Set Clear Boundaries: Whether in work or personal life, setting boundaries is crucial for maintaining emotional and mental well-being. Communicate Your Needs: People cannot read your mind; it's essential to communicate your needs clearly, especially when you're emotionally stretched. Treasure Relationships: Life is unpredictable, so it’s important to carve out intentional time for loved ones and meaningful relationships.
👉🏽 Compelling Episode Quotes "If birthing parents remembered how painful it was, the species would have died out long ago—just like I forgot how intense in-person events can be!" "We don’t just flail through and keep doing the same thing. We change and shift in the moment, debrief, and make new plans." "I didn’t just wear my lawyer or social worker hat; I gave myself permission to experience grief moment to moment."

21 Sep 2023 | In Tandem: Running a Business & Launching a Book While Married (ft Robert + Kay Lee Fukui) {Ep. 56} | 00:43:06
ENTREPRENEURSHIP * BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP * MARRIAGE * COMMUNICATION * BOOK LAUNCH * BOOK TOUR Today, we've got Robert and Kay Lee Fukui back on the show and we’re zoomzooming into the future, celebrating their one year book-iversary for Tandem, the Married Entrepreneur's Guide for Greater Work-Life Balance! We’ll be discussing what it means to write a book, of course, but also about handling potential conflict with others in the car on long road trips, why you should never eat a Snickers bar, and the lessons learned (and plans formed!) from a year post-book release. One of the things I love about Robert and Kay Lee is that they're not just looking at the business as a business. They're looking at the business as a living, breathing extension of you as a person, and if you own a business with a partner, a business partner, or your spouse, that extra extension also includes the extension of who you are as people. Today is no exception to this rule, as you’ll hear how they’ve grown even closer since Episode 48! And on that note, this is part two of two (which we'll talk about inside of the episode).
