28 May 2024Accessing your inner child & navigating parenting while healing yourself w/ Lavinia Brown00:53:14
Did you know you may not remember some of your childhood trauma? It can be really difficult to heal from something we don't remember and how do we know if we are truly healed? We dive into these questions and more on this weeks episode! 1. Our last episode together was the most listened to episode on Mamaknows podcast. We talked about the importance of parenting our inner child and how our inner child wounds affect how we show up in our relationships. But what if we don't remember our childhood traumas? How are we supposed to heal our wounds if we don't know what they are? 2. Once we do identify a childhood trauma we are working on parenting our inner child, but how do I avoid being dismissive versus actually healing the wound. For example, if we identify a moment where we felt unworthy, how do we affirm ourselves that we are worthy without being dismissive of that inner child's feelings? 3. How do we know when a childhood trauma is healed or that we have made peace with it? 4. How can we make sure we nurture our children as they are living their inner child? Check out Lavina's new signature holistic healing programme: Making Peace With Your Past. This is a self-led, self-paced, 3-step journey from reactivity, anxiety and rage to becoming the calm, conscious mama and connected partner you want to be. It contains over 6 hours of videos spread over 10 different modules and once purchased, it's available for life (so you can come back to it at any point in the future, either to remind yourself of how to manage a trigger, heal a painful memory or unpack a new layer of the mother imprint that may have surfaced, for example).  The programme comes with two, live, group coaching support calls with me every month - also for life (so that I am always here for you whatever queries or fears come up and whatever support or insights you might need on your healing journey) as well as a private, members'-only FB group.  Find Lavinia at https://www.laviniabrown.com/making-peace-with-your-past Learn more about your ad choices. We just had a big argument and are at a stalemate, how do we repair? 2. I think we can all agree that motherhood is not easy! There is so much advice out there and even the most well intentioned advice sometimes just isn't very helpful and can end up doing more harm than good. Sharing honest conversations around motherhood is usually helpful though and helps us all feel less alone! 1. What do you have the hardest time with/struggle the most with in motherhood? 2. What is one hill that you will die on about motherhood that you know is controversial and you'll get hate on? 3. What is the most outlandish piece of parenting advice you have received? 4. It could be related to their sensory processing!" -Your Kids TableOne day I was chatting to my girls on IG about how frustrating it is that my son is always running into things and seems so "wild." Not "so" wild that he can't focus or complete tasks but just enough that I am like "WTF DUDE." Well thanks to the amazing community, several of them being Occupational Therapists - I learned about Sensory Needs in kids and since then our lives have been so much easier. We now GET IT, we get why our son is the way he is and we KNOW how to help him. We all have different sensory needs, EVERY SINGLE CHILD has different preferences. This episode is SO important to me. I want every parent to listen and I promise you, you will take away SO much and it will help you understand your child SO much better. Our very amazing guest Alisha empowers women by equipping them with the knowledge and strategies to help their child with eating and/or sensory challenges thrive.  She has been a licensed occupational therapist for 17 years, and has been featured in Parenting Magazine, and the Huff Post. 13 Sep 2022Parenting Fairly W/ Behavior Analyst Mariko00:38:40
How many times do you ask yourself why is my child (fill in the blank)? This week, Mariko shares how to understand the why behind our children's behaviors and work through the behavior challenges. From Mariko:I am a mother of two and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. As a parent coach/behavior consultant, I work with families to address challenges that arise in daily life: tantrums, not listening, aggression (hitting, biting, throwing), bedtime routine/sleep issues, toilet training, picky eating/mealtimes, self-care skills, adjusting to a new sibling, sibling fights, academic and behavior challenges in school, you name it. I am dedicated to supporting parents to come up with functional, effective, and easy-to-implement strategies that will work for their children and parenting style. All of the strategies I recommend are evidence-based interventions, and most of them I have implemented myself as a parent. My goal is to increase desired behavior and reduce/eliminate unwanted or unhealthy behavior so that your kids and you can thrive! I graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, and earned a Master of Arts in special education from California State University, Northridge (CSUN). I worked with children with autism and other special needs for over 17 years, earning my Board Certification as a Behavior Analyst in 2010. Before starting my own consultation practice, I was a Clinical Director at a leading agency that provides Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) treatment to neurodiverse children.  When I became a parent, I became a better clinician. I understand the daily struggles, stressors, and guilt that come with being a parent. I am here to help you work through challenges so you see positive behavior change that you, your child, and your village will be able to sustain long-term. https://www.parentingfairly.com/@parenting_fairly________________________________________________________________Did you love this episode? 04 Oct 2022Back to school can be hard AF...How do we make it easier? W/Alyssa00:35:07
Alyssa stresses that many children feel dysregulated during the back-to-school transition and may experience a spike in separation anxiety. Because of this, she has a few tips for how parents can deal with their tiny human’s big emotions: Preview and prepare: Request pictures of your child’s school and teacher to help your child prepare, or do a walk-through of the school at a time when your child is feeling regulated. Create coping strategies: Put a family picture or favorite stuffed animal in your child’s backpack. This will help your child self-soothe while at school.  Create routines: Develop a healthy drop-off and pick-up routine that regulates your child’s nervous system and commit to no nightly activities for at least two weeks after school begins.  These are just a few ways Alyssa suggests regulating your child’s big, back-to-school emotions.Alyssa Blask Campbell is the founder and CEO of Seed & Sew, an organization committed to giving parents, teachers and caregivers the tools to raise emotionally intelligent humans. An emotional development expert with a master’s degree in early education, Alyssa co-created the Collaborative Emotion Processing (CEP) method with Lauren Stauble and researched it across the United States. She hosts the Voices of Your Village podcast and has been featured as an emotional development expert in publications including The Washington Post, Kids VT, and Family Education. Alyssa is deeply passionate about building emotional intelligence in children and creating a shame-free, judgment-free community of people interested in doing the same at Seed & Sew.Alyssa Blask Campbell, M.Ed., founded Seed & Sew You can also check out these free resources from Seed & Sew to learn more: Activities for Kids’ Regulation: Giving children the power of regulation through guided activities.  In the Moment Guide: Tools for responding to the big emotions from our kids.________________________________________________________________Did you love this episode? One of my favorite topics and one of the reasons I started this podcast - mental health in motherhood. This week I talked with Lauren and Megan of the Matrescence about what things impact our mental health, how our mental health changes after becoming a mom, and how to support our mental health. The Matrescence was born out of a desire to provide more maternal support after a professional and personal recognition in the gap of care for women.  We combined our medical, Lauren RN, BSN, Psychiatric Mental Health NP, and business (Megan) backgrounds—with our experience as seasoned mothers of three— to change the landscape of maternal mental health.  We provide integrative mental wellness support and community to and through motherhood. Our global community, actionable tools + expert-curated guides, and bimonthly peer support calls encourage women to embrace the transformation, embody forever wellness, and enrich their motherhood journey.www.thematrescence.com@thematrescence on IG  _______________________________________________________________Did you love this episode? 02 May 2023Raising a defiant & sassy pre-schooler w/@mamapsychologists00:37:16
Questions we address in this episode: Why is this age so hard? Like why are 4-6 year olds so defiant and sassy?  How to handle a blatant “no” even after trying to connect, offer options, even threat and bribe? (It’s time to get out of bath “no” cleaning up toys) How to achieve compliance when you may not be in the position to carry them physically? (leaving playground) Techniques to teach them to deal with anger? (Take a deep breath doesn’t work at this age) when should we be teaching these techniques & when does it get better?  How to handle when the child looks you in the eyes and does exactly what you said not to do?  How to balance nurturing their assertiveness and correcting their “sass and or talking back?” (How to be respected without dulling their strength) From Chelsea and Caitlin: We are best friends, Registered Psychologists, and, most importantly, moms (to 4 kids aged 5 and under) who struggled significantly in the postpartum period. From months-long NICU stay to birth trauma and postpartum anxiety—we truly have experienced many of the topics we talk about! We recently wrote a book entitled Not your Mother’s Postpartum Book published through PESI Publishing LTD, where we deep dive into all the things no one talks about in the postpartum period. We cover topics from postpartum mental health, birth trauma, infertility and pregnancy loss, relationships, boundaries, social media, and much more.Book: Not Your Mother's Postpartum BookWebsite: https://www.mamapsychologists.ca/Contact: mamapsychologists@gmail.comInstagram: @mamapsychologists ________________________________________________________________Did you love this episode?
