Chris and Christine Stigall are parents to three teenagers. Chris is a talk show host who’s made a career covering politics. Christine is a former public school teacher turned stay-at-home mom. They watched their kids and community decline during covid school closures. They knew it was time to speak up and make a change.
On the first episode of Making the Leap, Chris and Christine discuss their decision to send their daughter to a private Christian school, while keeping their two sons in public school. They walk listeners through their entire decision-making process, and bring on the academic dean of a private Christian school in West Chester, Pennsylvania. They discuss how it felt to call that school for the first time. They address the pro’s and con’s of both public and private school options. On the second episode of Making the Leap, Chris and Christine discuss the emotional strain that the covid pandemic placed on their family. That emotional strain coupled with political indoctrination in Pennsylvania public schools pushed Chris and Christine to the edge. It was time to move back to Missouri and pull their daughter out of public school. Making this move was a difficult decision, but it was driven out of necessity. Chris and Christine felt they had no choice but to pack their bags.

What is the state of public education? What will public schooling look like in the next 2 years? Or 5 years? These are the questions that Chris and Christine unpack alongside their guests, Julie and Nate Brumet.
Julie and Nate have both worked in public education in the state of Kansas. Like so many teachers across the nation, Nate witnessed an alarming shift in education during the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to leave the profession. He was one of the only teachers in his district willing to stand up to the local school board and voice his concerns about forced masking. His wife Julie experienced similar issues with masking while trying to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) Students how to read during the pandemic.

This week the Supreme Court ruled that the government cannot exclude religious institutions from government funding based solely on their religiosity. This is a huge win for the Christian education movement and the perfect way to commemorate the 10th episode of Making The Leap.

Long gone are the days when school boards were simply balancing budgets and negotiating contracts. These days, school board members are shaping curriculum, pushing agendas, and doing their best to hide information from parents.
On this week’s episode, Chris and Christine are joined by Ian Prior of America First Legal (AFL). As a father in Loudoun County, Virginia, Ian has seen firsthand the damage that can take place when the wrong school board members are in charge. Numerous school boards across the U.S. are funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars to consultant firms that push Critical Race Theory onto students of all ages. As public schools continue to shift further away from American and Christian values, school choice continues to expand in states across the nation. The result? Parents are taking their hard-earned dollars and using them elsewhere. They're spending their money at schools where teachers and administrators haven't completely abandoned patriotism and Christian values.

As the beginning of the school year approaches, more parents are considering Christian education options as the public education system continues to fail. Culture has drastically shifted the education sphere forcing teachers and administrators to explore career alternatives or leave their profession entirely. Prior to the pandemic, a subtle shift and change happened in the public education systems and curricula. Now, teachers, administrators, school boards, and teachers’ unions are emboldened like never before.

Molly Starkey, a former public-school teacher, left the public education system. She also chose to remove her three children from public school and enrolled them into private Christian education. She and her family found hope, community, and support within Christian education.

A tyrannical precedent has set in as the public education continues to push parents out of their children’s education and force their political agendas into the classroom. School boards and teachers’ unions are projecting messaging and agendas that parents don’t get to choose. Public schools are more focused on over-accommodating social issues rather than listening to parents’ concerns, academic rigor, and accountability.

Highly polarized institutions are influencing what is being taught in public schools. Parents are taking a stand for their children; they want education not indoctrination. They want schools to get back to the basics. But public schools are prioritizing gender and race agendas over learning how to read, write, and do math. School choice and funding students directly in every state for the school and education providers of their choosing – institutions that align with their values – should be made available to every family in America.  

Corey DeAngelis is the national director of research at the American Federation for Children, the executive director at Educational Freedom Institute, an adjunct scholar at Cato Institute, and a senior fellow at Reason Foundation. His research primarily focuses on the effects of school choice programs on non-academic outcomes such as criminal activity, character skills, mental health, and political participation.

The school choice options are endless compared to twenty years ago where Christian education alternatives such as homeschooling were viewed as unconventional and strange. More states are offering funding opportunities like education savings account programs (ESA), reallocating funds, scholarship applications, and more.   

Parents are rapidly turning to these school choice opportunities as public school systems secretly implement curriculums like gender support plans and indoctrinate children on the issues of sex, gender, and race. Public education systems, teachers' unions, and secular education organizations are focused on creating diversity and pluralism within the classroom rather than instruction.

Many parents who are considering removing their children from public schools are immediately faced with the cost of private education, whether it's Christian or secular, private education. Some parents will never even investigate their options because the costs are daunting while others begin the process but change their minds over a lack of funds. However, many families and churches have found ways to meet the financial challenges. Christine and Chris dive into one of the more controversial issues in Christian education; the role of science in a biblically-based education.

The Stigalls welcome guest, Nancy Reid, a middle-school science teacher at Veritas Christian Academy in Wayland, Massachusetts. Nancy was one of twelve 2022 Christian Teacher of the Year winners at the Excellence in Christian Education Awards presented by the Herzog Foundation last month in Washington, D.C.

They discuss how science and the bible merge when taught well, talking about issues like the age of earth, evolution and the creation of life. They also discuss how science and Christianity agree on most issues. 

Nancy shares her teaching style and why she starts with secular textbooks and then critiques them scientifically to show that biblical principles still apply. She discusses her project to create companion guides for secular textbooks so that Christian schools or homeschoolers have more resources to teach biblically based science.

Christine and Chris start this week's episode with discussing the increasing role of unions in education, and the emerging trend of independent-minded teachers leaving their unions. Christine shares her views, as a former public school teacher, of the increased pressure put on teachers by unions and administrators, and what the correct role of a teacher ought to be, especially outside their role as educator.

Jake shares his views of Christian education, both as a child and now as an adult, the importance of Christian education in today's world, and the legacy his father left to promote that goal.

On this week's episode, Chris and Christine discuss the importance of speaking up and demanding transparency in K-12 education. They are joined by a mom who has been a fearless warrior for Pennsylvania students since 2020. "She did something during covid that no other parent did," Chris said. 

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Megan Brock said she was a "regular mom." That quickly changed when Megan saw politics taking over the public school system in her state. 

Schools were shutting down with no science to back up the closures. From her vantage point, kids were being used as political pawns. Meanwhile, juvenile crime rates in Philadelphia were increasing and math and science scores were rapidly dropping. 

Megan decided to speak up and demand answers, filing numerous Right-To-Know requests with state and local officials in Bucks County. These requests were quickly met with lawsuits, which Megan has been able to fight with the help from Judicial Watch.

Even before the pandemic, Joelle Fortin knew learning pods were the right choice for her family of five. Joelle started a pod of her own three years ago, which has since grown to include other families and grades 4-10. 

Joelle's #1 tip? Don't bring your public school tendencies to the pod. As a former public school teacher for 10 years, Joelle had to reject many of the "one-size-fits-all" approaches that are used too often in the public school system.

Chris and Christine are joined by an English teacher to discuss book bans and the importance of reading classic American literature from a Christian worldview. Elizabeth Kendrex teaches K-12 English classes at Logos Preparatory Academy near Houston, Texas. 

As a university model school, Logos Preparatory Academy partners with parents and guardians in the teaching process. Students spend part of their school week at Logos and the other part of the week at home with their parents as "Co-Teachers."

Elizabeth explains this unique teaching model and dives into the curriculum and books read in her classroom. Elizabeth is also one of the Herzog Foundation's 2022 Teachers of the Year. She discusses being honored at the gala last fall and the importance of teachers taking a moment to recognize their achievements.

Chris and Christine are joined this week by Rhode Island mom and IWF Senior Fellow Nicole Solas. When Nicole enrolled her first child in kindergarten, she started asking questions of her local school district. To her surprise, the district wasn't willing to answer her questions and immediately retaliated against her.

But Nicole didn't back down. She has decided to stand up to the oppressive teachers unions and school districts that hide public information and bully parents.  Nicole now advocates for school choice and academic transparency on a nationwide scale.

Chris and Christine also address this week's tragic shooting at Covenant School in Nashville, TN, which claimed the lives of three young students and three adults. This was a heinous and evil attack on Christianity, and we are demanding answers along with national leaders and parents.

Chris and Christine discuss school choice expansion with AFC Senior Fellow and Founder of Black Minds Matter Denisha Allen. Denisha's home state of Florida recently expanded its school school program, joining multiple other states in passing universal school choice this year.

Denisha previously served as School Choice and Youth Liaison to the Secretary of Education at the U.S. Department of Education. She is a Florida tax-credit scholarship graduate, and now sits on the board of directors for Step Up for Students.

When COVID-19 began to affect her children's schooling experience, Kristin chose to become more involved in their local school district. However, this new involvement in public education opened her eyes to escalating issues, including the controversial push for the Panorama Student Survey.

Chris and Christine have an in-depth conversation with Tricia Hanska on science in education and how Christian education bridges the gap between secular and biblical worldviews. Tricia shares her passion for God’s creation and science, giving insight into how to prepare children to learn about science through a biblical lens, while also learning how to defend their faith. Being new listeners to the show, the Mackey family was slightly hesitant to taking the homeschool approach to education in 2020, but after a successful experience for their two children, Ashley and Tyler are confident they made the right decision.

This week, Chris and Christine discuss how Christian schools can better educate students with learning disabilities. They are joined by Karla Phillips-Krivickas, Founder of the Arizona Inclusion Network and Think Inclusion. 

With over 20 years of experience in state and federal policy, Karla uses her unique perspective to advise education leaders on sound policy and best practices to advance academic achievement for all students, including those with disabilities. Karla is the proud mother of a 19-year-old son and a 15-year daughter with Down Syndrome, both with learning disabilities.

Throughout their discussion with Karla, Chris and Christine find that learning disabilities come in many different forms, and unfortunately, many students go undiagnosed for years. 

On the bright side, educating students with disabilities isn't as difficult as some make it out to be. By simply changing their approach and teaching strategies, countless private schools could increase their capacity and better serve all students.

Chris and Christine discuss Charlotte Mason’s method of education with Ambleside Schools International Founder Maryellen St. Cyr.

In 1989, Maryellen began to search for a philosophically and pedagogically consistent method of Christian education. She found just such a method in the writings of British educator, Charlotte Mason. Maryellen has since become one of the country’s leading experts on Charlotte Mason’s pedagogy and was a primary author of the book, When Children Love to Learn.

In 2000, Maryellen founded Ambleside School of Fredericksburg, Texas, providing children with a Charlotte Mason education and serving as a center for training interested educators from around the world. In response to growing requests for help in establishing Ambleside Schools, in 2005, Maryellen co-founded Ambleside Schools International.

Dr. Keri Ingraham joins the show to explain a new, hybrid education model that's quickly rising in popularity — College-Simulated Learning or CSL. Schools that use this education model are called University-Model schools and are accredited by NAUMS, Inc. Primarily used for high schoolers, this model is a hybrid home/in-class schedule to create more flexibility and space for small institutions as well as increase parental involvement at home.

Dr. Ingraham also recaps school choice victories from 2023. Nearly 10 states passed universal school choice programs! She predicts which states will join them in 2024 and create their own programs.

What happens when a Virginia public school teacher feels she can no longer deal with the cultural darkness swallowing her school and classroom? Meet Dennita Miskimen, founder of The Little Red Schoolhouse in rural Virginia. 

This is a powerful story of one woman's quest to introduce elementary school kids to a life on the farm, bathed in nature. She believes deeply this is the way forward to teach kids all they need to know to be fully educated, but also be truly self-sufficient. Right down to growing and harvesting their own food! Dennita's enthusiasm for educating and her love of the Lord will inspire you.
