18 Oct 2018#086: Branding for Musicians - A Masterclass on the Laws to Building a Powerful Brand 00:43:26

Most companies overcomplicate branding. Tim Ferriss has one of my favorite definitions on branding, and that’s “consistently over-delivering the same one or two values to your 1,000 true fans.” Branding is what people think of you or your company, and that’s influenced by the value you provide to your audience and your behavior around providing that service. It’s the value and behavior that you are most consistently known for. In this episode, we discuss some of the most important laws to building a powerful brand for your music career.

05 Mar 2020#097: Derek Sivers - Creative Ways to Pursue Your Music Career, Life, Challenging Yourself, and Breaking the Habits of the Traditional Music Business 01:46:53

Derek was a professional touring musician, who was looking for a way to release his music online. At the time, the only way artists could sell their music online was being on a major label or a label that had distribution through a major. This inspired him to the creation of CD Baby in 1997, which for the first time gave all musicians an opportunity to release their music online, and has become the biggest distributors and seller of independent music. In 2008, Derek sold CD Baby, giving the proceeds to a charitable trust for music education. Since, Derek has written several books, articles, frequent TED Speaker, has become a master programmer, philosopher, teacher, and inspiring creative thinker.

In this conversation, you’ll learn about Derek’s story, philosophies and strategies on how an artist can approach the music business in new and creative ways, and much more.

08 Oct 2020#116 Shane Hazel - Libertarian Candidate for US Senate for the State of Georgia talking Music, Marketing, and Liberty 01:11:21

When it comes to the 2020 Election, many are saying this is the most important election of our lives. I agree with that statement, but for completely different reasons. Most make it all about Donald Trump and getting him out of the white house, when really, what makes this election so important is our Liberty is at stake. Something nobody in mainstream media is talking about. Our daily lives, health, businesses, savings, investments, creative liberty, art, security, and future is at stake. Over the past 5 years, I’ve been leaning towards the Liberty movement more and more each year. The Liberty movement doesn’t necessarily mean Libertarian, even though most Libertarians will align with that. It means there are people from all walks of life, fighting for our social and economic freedom.

Shane Hazel is one of those individuals out there fighting for our Liberty. He’s the Libertarian candidate running for the US Senate for the State of Georgia. In this conversation, we talk about music, marketing, and Liberty. We discuss his current campaign, and why he chose to run for Senate, different issues happening in our country and the Liberty solution to these issues, music, marketing, and much more. He has a podcast called Radical full of many amazing guests from all different walks of lives and political views to discuss Liberty, life, current events, and much more.

26 Oct 2021147: Does the Number of Social Media Followers, Streams, and Views Matter in 2021 & beyond for Musicians?00:11:08

Does the number of followers you have on any of the social media platforms, or how many streams you get, or how many views you get matter? Kind of. But there is a whole lot more that goes into it than just that. Those are vanity metrics. In this video, I discuss what really matters for musicians when building a business.

25 Jan 2018#070: Oliver Wood of the Wood Brothers - An Adventure with Musical Greats, Independence, and Creative Freedom 00:28:37

Oliver Wood is one of the founders of The Wood Brothers, along with his brother, Chris Wood. After several years on their own path, they discovered their musical bond and have been on a wonderful journey ever since their first release in 2006. On February 2nd, 2018,The Wood Brothers are releasing their sixth album ‘One Drop of Truth,’ which dives headfirst into a deep wellspring of sounds, styles and influences. Whereas their previous outings have often followed a conceptual and sonic through-line, here the long-standing trio featuring brothers Oliver and Chris Wood along with Jano Rix treat each song as if it were its own short film. The plaintive, country-folk of the album’s opening track “River Takes The Town” gives way to the The Band-esque Americana soul of “Happiness Jones.” The stream of consciousness ballad “Strange As It Seems” floats on a cloud of ethereal beauty, standing in stark contrast to “Sky High”—a Saturday night barnburner built upon stinging slide guitar funk. “Seasick Emotions” is rife with emotional turmoil, yet “Sparkling Wine” is jaunty and carefree. The end result is undeniably The Wood Brothers’ most dynamic recording to date.

In this conversation, Oliver Wood discusses the new album, along with some stories of his mentor Tinsley Ellis, his father, and advice for aspiring musicians and songwriters. Oliver Wood has had such a wonderful career, and in this episodes he shares some of his stories and lessons from those adventures.

11 Jan 2022#162: Musicians Have the Blueprint to End Poverty00:55:48

Musicians have the blueprint to end poverty. This episode is inspired from a talk I did for my final lecture I did for an Entertainment Finance course. It was part of a four week financial freedom series where students learned about the different economic schools, income producing assets, how to analyze stocks, Web 3.0, and finished with the musicians business blueprint. I believe the model that musicians, and really most of the music industry operate in, is a map on how we can build up the middle class, income class, and work towards ending poverty in America. This talk focuses on happiness, ownership, and education. I hope you enjoy!
