Today’s episode is on Waiting to Exhale, the Terry McMillan-novel-turned-1995 film starring the late, great Whitney Houston, alongside Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon, and Loretta Devine as four friends living in Phoenix Arizona, looking for love in alllll the wrong f***boys. It’s a movie filled with as many irresistible lines as there are costumes — from designer Judy L. Ruskin (Sleepless in Seattle, Bruce Almighty) that are somehow both timeless and deliciously ’90s at the same time. We won’t blame you if you start quoting the movie nonstop (esp. Bernadette's fire-setting monologue), or listen to the iconique soundtrack (which was produced by Babyface, and features Brandy, SWV, and, of course, Whitney) all week long.

Up your ziggy with a wa-wa brush! In All I Wanna Do, our girl Kiki Dunst is a rebel at a 1960s all-girls high school with Gaby Hoffman, Monica Keena, Heather Matarazzo, and Rachel Leigh Cook. The girls are part of a secret club called D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Ravioli), in which they share their post-graduation dreams and vow to help each other attain them no matter what. Once the school threatens to become co-ed, the girls decide to take matters into their own hands and raise some hell! The private school looks are retro cute and inspire us to want to wear berets, knee socks, and 60s dresses. Costume design by Ann Hould-Ward and Julie Whitfield! Tune in now!

We decided to press play on Empire Records for this week flick. We're rocking with this classic that inspired many '90s kids looks thanks to Susan Lyall (200 Cigarettes) and her ability to communicate each character's artsy angst via clothing.

We are absolutely thrilled to have the fabulous Bri Luna of The Hoodwitch on the podcast today to talk about one of her favorite movies, She-Devil! The 1989 flick stars Roseanne Barr as a jilted housewife who devises a long-con revenge on her cheating husband and the romance novelist who stole him (Meryl Streep in one of her most underrated roles). Costume designer Albert Wolsky takes the characters through a fantastical voyage of clothes, beginning with caricatures of extreme femininity and stereotypes of the forgotten housewife, then into a transformation that is both sartorial and spiritual. It’s a makeover like no other!

Bri opens our eyes to the movie’s many unseen layers: looking at it through a magickal lens, and how the two main characters can be interpreted as Lilith and Eve. It’s so much more about revenge (one of our favorite genres); it also explores the dichotomy of womanhood, female repression and oppression, and the power of the underdog. You're going to want to eat an eclair in the bathtub while you tune into this extremely Taurus, Libra, and Scorpio-esque movie now!

Blaire breaks down this transformative era in Aaliyah’s career, and how this video was a true makeover moment for Aaliyah in more ways than one. It's the third week of Drewcember and we're Riding in Cars With Boys. My colors are blush and bashful! We’re ending Dollyuary, our month-long Dolly Parton celebration, with a classic…Steel Magnolias! After having emotional breakdowns from watching this tear-jerker movie, we get into the fashions of these strong southern belles! Costume designer Julie Weiss (Frida, American Beauty) put this deliciously talented crew of women (Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis) in big shoulder pads, cat-eye glasses, fur coats and overalls, and church hats galore! We discuss the alleged Mob Wife trend and thee armadillo cake; Blaire celebrates Ouiser’s (Shirley’s) eccentric Southern Lady glam, and Marie attempts to make Truvee’s (Dolly’s) cuppa cuppa cuppa cake (1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 fruit cocktail with the syrup). We're celebrating our THIRD anniversary today with one of our all-time favorites, Freeway! The 1996 cult film stars Reese Witherspoon as a white trash Little Red Riding Hood who's trying to make it to her grandma's house when she goes head-to-head with a serial killer. It's trashy, violent, and incredibly offensive, but worth it to see Reese in the role of her life! The costumes (by Merrie Lawson) are scarce, but it's quality over quantity — they bring us right back to growing up as teens in SoCal. We discuss our love for Dickie's overalls (again), Sanrio wallets, seatbelt-belts, Eddie Furlong's Cameo, Blaire's piercing mishap, and the time Marie rolled over on top of John Stamos's Hollywood Walk of Fame star.

Ahhh Belly, where do we begin. This movie perfectly encapsulates the extreme talents of the fashion forward, but still street adjacent, look and feel of a June Ambrose and Hype Williams collaboration. June and Hype are like music video PB & J...or like caviar and crème fraîche. If you haven't watched this '98 masterpiece you're missing out! 
The cast is perfect too! You have DMX, Nas, the stunning and talented Taral Hicks, Tionne 'T-Boz' Watkins, Method Man. Kurt Loder, Tyrin Turner, and so many more. 

We're in agreement that this film has it all. Theadora Van Runkle was the costume designer responsible for taking risks with Phyllis Nefler's over the top '80s Rodeo Drive socialite fashion and creating looks we're still talking about 30 years later!

We’ve got sumthin’ a little different this week. It’s a heavy, dark, revenge flick, but we PROMISE it’s a good one. The recently Oscar-nominated movie, Promising Young Woman, stars Carey Mulligan as Cassandra, a woman who goes out to a different bar or club each night, pretends to get completely knock-down, blackout drunk with the purpose of luring a “nice guy” to take her home. At first, you don’t think this is going to be a “costume movie,” but it's interesting how Cassandra dresses up in different “disguises'' whenever she's on the prowl — a sharp contrast to the pastel sweaters and dresses she wears during the daytime. Costumes are by Nancy Steiner who did Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides, and a ton more. Tune in now!

We bid farewell to October by having Halloween Queens’ Natalie Burris back on the pod to dissect the late ‘90s fashions of Urban Legend! This post-Scream slasher is stacked with the hottest stars of the era, with the killer terrorizing college kids by referencing Urban Legends. A super fun concept with great costume design by Mary Claire Hannan (The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Jackie Brown, Red Eye, Four Rooms!). We love the autumn-esque, Gilmore Girls vibe of Alicia Witti's final girl's turtlenecks, Danielle Harris as the goth roommate in all of her Hot Topic deliciousness, and Tara Reid's sexy looks as the campus radio host/sex advice columnist. Questions we have: was Sasha's (Tara Reid) Halloween costume somehow based on Tiffany from Bride of Chucky (it may have been filming at the same time?!), and was Niecy Nash's character in Scream Queens inspired by Loretta Devine in this film?

For the last episode of Drewcember and this podcast season, we're doing something a little different and picking a movie where Drew isn't the lead: Donnie Darko! The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a sleepwalking '80s teen who has visions of a scary rabbit man named Frank who tells him that the world will end in 28 days. Drew plays his teacher and her company, Flower Films, produced the film. Costumes were by April Ferry, who did Game of Thrones, Big Trouble in Little China, Jurassic World, the OG Child's Play, and so much more. There isn't a ton to discuss for costumes and looks but we spot a few gems!

Happy Libra Season! We’re discussing the feel-good 1990’s film Mermaids, which stars Cher as a single mom to a teen Winona Ryder and lil’ Christina Ricci in early 1960s New England. Costumes were by the incredible Merit Allen who also did Eyes Wide Shut, La Vie En Rose, and The Witches, and who was also  a fashion journalist and editor at British Vogue and icon of the Swinging Sixties era. Ryder’s Catholicism-obsessed character wears prudish Peter Pan collared shirts with knee-length skirts, while Cher is a brunette Peggy Bundy in capri pants, cha cha heels, polkadot dresses, and, of course, an iconic mermaid costume. We've got a wild card this week: Fresh, the new Hulu rom-com-turned-horror movie about a woman named Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) who has a meat-cute, ahem, with a man named Steve (our fave hunk Sebastian Stan) in a grocery store but he doesn't turn out to be the seemingly nice dude she thought he was. You wouldn't think there'd be a lot of looks, but in fact, there are! Including some smart choices with hidden meanings, courtesy of the film's costume designers Christina Flannery and Athena Theny. 

To celebrate Halloween (the day) we're talking about Halloween (the movie) and all of the ways Halloween H20 was a representation of the real and basic late '90s looks.
