27 Nov 20231. Creating Space in Motherhood and Business with Caroline O’Neill00:51:00

I’m BEYOND excited to have the very first episode of the Made for Mothers Podcast live, and out into the world!

I have an incredible guest to share with you for this first episode - Caroline O’Neill. Caroline has played a pivotal role in my own life as a close friend and an important part of my birth team, and also as a key collaborator in a lot of the Made for Mothers work we do in our local community. Caroline is an expert when it comes to helping expectant mothers and families in our community prepare both physically and emotionally for birth. She was able to do this by creating the Body, Birth, and Baby Center. This has been a dream of hers for years, and she knew it was the missing piece that parents needed as they were bringing their children into the world.

Caroline and I talk all about her journey navigating both motherhood and entrepreneurship, and all of the amazing (and also really difficult) experiences she’s had along the way. Caroline has a beautiful story, and so much wisdom and guidance to share as you’re working to create space in motherhood and business. I know you’re going to love this episode!

In this episode about creating space in motherhood and business, we cover:

  • How Caroline and I first connected + her important role in the birth of my baby and my postpartum recovery
  • Caroline’s story of navigating pregnancy as a first-time mom to then making the decision to leave her massage practice when her daughter turned 1
  • Experiencing multiple pregnancy losses, and the self-reflection, healing, and growth that happened as a result
  • Why it’s ok to feel all of the emotions when you’re going through something hard, and not know how you will ‘grow’ from, or use it later
  • Juggling both motherhood and entrepreneurship, and the type of ‘balance’ that works best for Caroline
  • Caroline’s best tips + encouragement for moms who are in the thick of motherhood and business, and struggling to find their ‘flow’

09 Jan 202407. Balancing Acts: Self-Trust, Rest, and the Journey of Motherhood + Business with Ali Caudill00:44:33

Harmonizing relationships, work, and life takes center stage in this episode, echoing the essence of my dear friend Ali, our featured guest. Working alongside Ali, the heart-centered photographer behind our Made for Mothers events and all of Mariah's brands, feels like a genuine business sisterhood.

Ali, a mother of three and a brand photographer at Freebird Imagery, is currently pursuing a graduate degree in therapy. As a creative spirit, she nurtures curiosity, prioritizes rest, honors her body, and consistently embodies authenticity in every role.

Our conversation explores the intricate relationship mothers have with rest, addressing the common guilt associated with it. We delve into creating harmony over the elusive 'balance' and discuss how divorce and financial shifts impact our work.

Ali's recent lesson of embracing self-trust and finding solace in quiet moments is profound. Being present with oneself reveals the subtle 'whispers' guiding us to the next chapter.

Ali's journey unfolds, sharing insights on combating burnout with the art of resting and balancing entrepreneurship with the joys of parenting. This dialogue is a rich exploration of the transformative power of sisterhood.

Dr. Lindsay Durand Massumi is not only a new mama, but a a passionate and trailblazing physical therapist who specializes in pregnancy, postpartum, and pelvic health. Her profound commitment to supporting women during the prenatal and postpartum phases is fueled by a personal understanding of pelvic floor challenges, even predating pregnancy.

Too often, women endure silent suffering without seeking assistance for issues like pain, leakage, and prolapse. Lindsay's own journey attests to the transformative power of recovery. Collaborating with a skilled pelvic health professional is not just an option – it's a pivotal step that can genuinely transform a woman's entire life.

In our conversation, Lindsay and I explore the pivotal moment when she navigated the intersection of career and motherhood. Instead of confining herself to a role that hindered her freedom in both aspects of life, she courageously chose to launch her own business alongside her husband. Lindsay challenges the conventional notion that babies must be separated from the workplace, asserting that they belong with us. It's time to break free from the belief that these two cannot coexist.

Lindsay's journey is a beacon of wisdom and courage. Her bold actions in revolutionizing pelvic health will not only benefit her generation but will leave a lasting impact for generations to come, including her daughter's. Okay, no shame here, I am for sure fan-girling a little bit over my guest today!

Meet Tori Sprankel, a personal brand expert who boldly broke away from corporate America to dive into entrepreneurship. Starting with a loosely defined website and offers, Tori's business has evolved, with personal branding being her absolute passion. She highlights the importance of overcoming comparison, a struggle many of us face.

Meet Claire O'Bryan, one of my fave IG accounts to follow (trust me, she's hilarious) and the real deal when it comes to showing up online authentically. Claire is an Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner and Co-Founder of Skin Clique; she's also the brains behind the Dabble Co Podcast.

Meet Ashley Ayres, a wife, mother of four, and the founder of Collectively Styled, a personal styling service aimed at assisting moms and female founders in developing a style strategy with supportive guidance. With two decades of experience in the style industry, Ashley empathizes with the myriad challenges women encounter while balancing motherhood, careers, and everything in between. 01 Mar 202413. For Moms Walking Through Grief, Death, and Widowhood with Verhanika Willhelm01:16:50

I am deeply honored to call Verhanika Willhelm a dear friend, with whom I've shared a profound connection for over a decade now!

Verhanika, based in Seattle, Washington, is an organizational development consultant and executive coach with a rich background in theater management and psychology. Armed with a master's degree in organizational development, she has seamlessly transitioned from her roles as a stage manager and financial planner to becoming a catalyst for fostering healthy workplaces. Known affectionately as a workplace therapist, a moniker I wholeheartedly relate to given my own role in facilitating business therapy sessions, Verhanika is adept at instigating lasting change that harmonizes traditional structure with humanity.

Over the years, both our businesses and personal lives have undergone profound transformations. In a candid conversation, Verhanika and I delve into the topic of her husband's battle with cancer, and the profound grief she endured upon losing him—the love of her life. Amidst navigating her grief, she persevered in growing her business and mothering her young son. Our discussion also touches upon the arduous struggle of seeking help as a mother, emphasizing the importance of specificity when receiving support that truly meets one's needs or those of their family.

Regrettably, our society often lacks safe and accessible spaces for confronting the uncomfortable realities of death and grief. We discuss WHY we just can't talk very well about death?

I treasure the depth and sincerity of my conversation with Verhanika. Her courage in sharing her journey of grief and widowhood with the world is a gift! Please connect with her on IG if you feel seen in this convo!

05 Mar 202414. Raising the Bar: Like a Sister's Mission for Maternal Advocacy + Empowered Parenthood00:53:43

I'm thrilled to introduce you to two incredible moms who're redefining "sisterhood" in so many ways!

These amazing women, who are actually sisters, founded Like a Sister, which is all about providing top-notch education for parents-to-be and the crucial support they need once their little one arrives. Their journey began right around the start of the 2020 pandemic, aiming to create a hub of resources and sisterly support for new moms.

Drawing from their expertise as a postpartum doula (Tiffany) and a lactation counselor (Candy), along with their roles as parent educators, Candy and Tiffany are on a mission to empower their clients through pregnancy and into parenthood. They want every parent to feel informed and confident as they navigate the myriad decisions that come with raising a family.

As local moms themselves, Candy and Tiffany were a lifeline for me during the early stages of motherhood, offering invaluable support with newborn care and breastfeeding. Today, we're diving into the importance of finding personalized, trustworthy support during pregnancy and beyond, balancing entrepreneurship with motherhood, the overwhelming world of baby products, and much more.

It's clear that our society still has a long way to go in truly supporting mothers and families, but Candy, Tiffany, and I are committed to being part of the solution. We want every mom to know that there's a village out there ready to embrace and support them every step of the way.

In this episode, we cover essential topics that resonate with all mothers, regardless of where they are in their journey.

14 Mar 202415. Meet Erin, My Sleep Bestie Who Changed Our Life Through Sleep Coaching!00:55:22

Today's guest is none other than my fabulous sleep coach, Erin Meinel. I hired Erin to help our family with sleep support when my son was 6 months old. Honestly, I was beyond exhausted and felt mentally drained when I reached out to Erin. I knew I was tapped out and needed outside support. When I connected with Erin, it felt like she was right there with us, holding our hand through the whole process, giving my family and me the support (and much-needed sleep) we so desperately needed. She is truly my sleep bestie!

Erin Meinel is a mother of two boys and the founder and head sleep consultant at Lake Country Sleep. Lake Country Sleep has helped hundreds of families find rest and connection utilizing their signature CHEER method.

Erin also knows that navigating the internet and social media can feel like the wild west for new moms and parents. While the abundance of information can be helpful, it can also feel daunting when you're trying to find the best sleep options for your family. Erin and her team at Lake Country Sleep always provide personalized options for the families they work with. It's never a one-size-fits-all method, and it's vital to have a coach is deeply compassionate about your specific situation.

Erin and I delve into the intimate, life-changing experience that sleep training can provide for families, the magic in finding your village with sleep and beyond, and what it can look like to stay in your lane while trying to navigate all of the online noise coming at us today. We also chat more about Erin's journey from early childhood educator to the pivotal moment that led her to stepping into entrepreneurship, and how that's led to not only one but two impactful businesses for her and her family.

I refer to Erin as my sleep bestie because working with her was honestly a dream, and my family and I will be forever grateful to her. If your family is not getting the quality sleep you desire (and you know you need), I encourage you to reach out to Erin and her team to get that high-touch support!

20 Mar 202416. WAIT, A DAD!? A Heart-to-Heart About Raising Kids & Running Businesses w/ Tyler Ross!01:26:34

Wait, wait, wait... a DAD on the Made for MOTHERS show!? Let's goooo... Tyler Ross and I recently connected through a mutual friend and had a fun idea! He runs his podcast supporting dads, so we decided to do a podcast swap. Our goal was to discuss the various aspects of parenting and entrepreneurship from the perspectives of both mom and dad business owners... and we did just that... an hour and half of that to be exact, ha!

Tyler Ross, a husband and father of two (Irish twins), is the owner and broker at Ross Real Estate and the host of the Learning to Dad podcast. He's also involved in building a jiu-jitsu school and creating a decking company. He enjoys pursuing other interests such as health and fitness, writing, and investments. Tyler is passionate about having candid conversations with dads navigating parenthood and entrepreneurship.

In our conversation, Tyler and I covered numerous topics relevant to parents balancing work and family life. We explored the reasons behind the overused terms "working mom" and "mom guilt" compared to the less-discussed "working dad" and "dad guilt" terms. We delved into the importance of raising emotionally available, self-regulated children and navigating the unique challenges of fatherhood and entrepreneurship. We discussed the power of reverse engineering one's desired lifestyle and the importance of prioritizing self-care to prevent burnout.

Self-awareness, vulnerability, patience, and resilience are all essential traits for both raising children and making an impact through our work. Our conversation was enriching and valuable, providing insights that can leave you feeling enlightened and encouraged, regardless of the stage of life you're in with parenthood and entrepreneurship.

27 Mar 202417. Babies + Brand Partnerships w/ Dallas Girl Gang Founder + CEO Amanda Smith00:58:48

Gather 'round because we've got the one and only Amanda Smith in the house for today's show!

Amanda is the CEO and Founder of the Dallas Girl Gang, and let me tell yah.. she knows a thing or two about events, community building, and brand partnerships.  On a mom-to-mom personal note, she's been a real inspiration for me as I've been diving into building my own Made for Mothers community this past year.

Amanda's journey to entrepreneurship wasn't exactly planned. A former elementary school music teacher, she stumbled into business ownership by accident. Back in 2017, when she first landed in Dallas, she was on a mission to connect with like-minded women. So, she started the Dallas Girl Gang Facebook group, and well, let's just say it's grown a bit since then—42,000 members and counting!

And get this, you don't even have to be in Dallas to get in on the action. I'm proof of that!

Today, Amanda and I are chatting about the nitty-gritty of building and maintaining a thriving community. We'll cover everything from reaching out across platforms to nailing those brand partnerships, and even finding your footing in the chaos of motherhood.

Amanda's real, she's honest, and she's got some serious wisdom to share. So trust me when I say, if you're looking for a supportive community like the one she's created with DGG, you're in for a treat. Oh, and don't forget to mark your calendars for her upcoming conference this September 2024—it's gonna be one for the books!

THE ACTUAL PEP TALK WE ALL NEED: EVERY MOM NEEDS TO TURN THIS EPSIODE WAY UP!

Laura Sinclair is a mom of two, CEO of The LJ Social Agency, a boutique social media marketing agency, and the host of the This Mother Means Business podcast. With over a decade of experience crafting digital marketing strategies for big brands, Laura is committed to empowering women to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams through her podcast, coaching, courses, and events. She passionately believes in amplifying both you and your business, particularly supporting moms as they navigate the journey of motherhood alongside building thriving businesses.

Laura and I dive deep into all things motherhood, business, and marketing. We explore topics such as the realities of growth and development for moms in business, the often feral and exploitative coaching practices in the online space, and the importance of establishing foundational, yet often overlooked, business practices for sustainable growth and less burnout.

Both Laura and I are staunch advocates of email marketing and the transformative power of cultivating and engaging with communities. We share a common mission in our respective work, recognizing the unique agility that mothers possess in balancing ambition amidst the unpredictability of motherhood. Amidst the noise and conflicting advice from non-parent "gurus," we emphasize the importance of returning to fundamental marketing principles rather than chasing after fleeting trends.

This conversation serves as an enriching marketing 101 training, packed with valuable insights. So buckle up, because mothers mean business, and I'm confident you'll thoroughly enjoy this episode with Laura!

27 May 202425. The Power of “Not Right Now” w/ Annie Hillman, Founder of 1428 Financial00:51:10

Annie and I see business SO similarly and today’s episode filled my cup to the brim. Annie has such a steadiness about her and that is so felt in this conversation.

Allow me to introduce Annie Hillman, a mother of one and the CEO and founder of 1428 Financial. Annie's journey embodies the essence of accidental entrepreneurship, a path familiar to many of us. Driven by a persistent sense of divine calling to aid others in managing their finances, Annie eventually made the bold decision to depart from her full-time accounting job and fully commit to 1428 Financial. Today, Annie and her team provide bookkeeping and CFO partnerships designed to empower women, particularly mothers, in gaining a genuine understanding of their finances. She advocates that finances need not be a source of stress; rather, they can serve as a valuable tool for business owners to operate with confidence and profitability.

In our discussion today, Annie and I explore the delicate balance between motherhood and entrepreneurship, and what it truly means to 'do less better'. We navigate the complexities of running a business, as well as the joys and challenges of juggling family life. Annie shares her journey from accidental entrepreneurship to refining financial services for mothers. Additionally, we delve into the empowering realm of financial literacy, the importance of trademarking business names (thanks to our good friend Berkley), the elegance of simplicity in marketing, and the indispensable support necessary for success in both motherhood and business.

Annie and I are deeply passionate about supporting moms in business - we're all about Moms for Moms! I love the straightforward and practical methods she employs to assist mothers with their finances. Managing the numbers in your business shouldn’t be stressful, overwhelming, or avoided altogether. I'm certain you'll thoroughly enjoy this episode, brimming with anecdotes, reflections, and invaluable insights!

03 Jun 202426. From Kindergarten Teacher to Birth Educator: Kaila Maguire on Empowering Parents & Navigating Motherhood00:58:44

I’m so energized by this conversation where I discuss all things birth education with Kaila Maguire.

Kaila Maguire, a former kindergarten teacher turned 21st-century childbirth educator and podcaster, joins me today to share her passion around empowering other moms. She’s a fellow boy mom who sought something entirely different after navigating significant life changes during her pregnancy and early postpartum period, coinciding with the world's shutdown in 2020. Motivated to shed light on less-discussed aspects of parenthood, she launched Parent Tell, a podcast focused on diverse and underrepresented pregnancy and parenting narratives. Despite not being able to attend birth prep classes, Kaila turned this challenge into fuel and became a certified birth instructor, birthing Not Your Mama’s Birth Services.

In today’s conversation, Kaila and I share our birth experiences and highlight the need for more relevant information, not only in birth education but also in the fourth trimester. We explore Kaila’s transition from kindergarten teacher to childbirth educator, the concept that all moms are ‘working moms,’ the importance of community and reducing isolation in the post-pandemic era, the ongoing juggling act of motherhood, and more.

Kaila takes pride in being the friendly face and warm presence for expecting parents. Not Your Mama’s Birth Services is not just educational and inclusive but also FUN – because birth education should be enjoyable! I'm incredibly grateful for Kaila's efforts in shedding light on the various birthing options in our society and providing invaluable postpartum support for families. Whether you’re a new mom, building your business, or simply managing multiple responsibilities, I believe this raw and empowering episode will offer invaluable support!

Meet Jillian Anderson, a seasoned copywriter and copy consultant for motherhood-inspired brands. Jillian feels very at home in the Holistic Women's Health space and with 8+ years in digital marketing, she now specializes in high performance sales copy (the kind that sounds like you, but sells WAY better). Jillian is no stranger to the "stretch" that motherhood brings and she knows that while moms can do a lot, they can't do it all. She's passionate about handling her clients' sales messaging, so they can show up as the best versions of themselves in both motherhood and their creative lives.

In today's conversation, Jillian and I delve into why sales pages and long-form copy matter SO much beyond just your launch period. We also discuss what it looks like to find harmony as moms in business (solo mom time for the win), navigating the lack of support working families face, authentic copy that should flow with the unique, magnetic messaging of your brand, nuances that come with using popular AI tools like ChatGPT and Otter AI in your business workflows and more.

Jillian is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to all things copy and she loves pouring into other moms in business. Transitioning to coaching and consulting, she discovered the power of email marketing and has been a dedicated advocate ever since.

In our conversation, Allison and I explore the importance of strategic marketing and why email should be your primary focus for sustainable business growth. We discuss the shift from one-on-one work to scaling through many, the role of outsourcing, the value of clear, niche-specific messaging, and simplifying your offerings to match your passion and energy. We also cover why relying solely on Instagram is risky and break down marketing and sales funnels in a straightforward manner.

Navigating motherhood while building a business presents its own set of challenges, but it’s possible to create a fulfilling business that also brings life-changing results for you and your family. This episode is filled with actionable advice and insights on efficient marketing strategies and much more. No matter where you are on your entrepreneurial journey, this is an episode you won't want to miss!
