On today’s podcast I’ll be talking to a new Lucky Star instructor who just happens to be my niece, Andrea Hoehn.  Andrea is a trained and experienced interior designer who worked in the commercial architecture industry until she became a mother to two wonderful little girls and decided to stay home. But after a while, she started feeling like she lacked a creative outlet. So, she started ‘Graze’, a personalized charcuterie catering and delivery service in the Denver metro area.

This business allowed her to combine her passion for food, hosting, and art with her knowledge of design to create edible art. Inspired by the beautiful details in fruit and flowers, Andrea integrates texture and color into her food displays for events and her signature cheese and charcuterie boards are distinct by the way she highlights and showcases seasonal garnishes, perfect for gatherings year round.

On today's episode we talked with Lucky Star instructor Alexis Lane-Sanders.  Alexis is a creative who loves to dabble in a little bit of everything. The process of learning and trying something new is where she finds her joy. Her creative outlets include knitting, sewing, wire working, resin, embroidery, and gardening. When she isn’t working on a project, she’s curled up in a comfy chair with a good book.  Alexis lives in Austin, Tx with her husband and two kiddos (super cute chaos gremlins). On today’s podcast I’ll be talking to longtime Lucky Star camper and instructor, Leslie Gaworecki.  Leslie is a photographer turned abstract artist from Houston, Texas. After moving often and living abroad for much of her youth, she received a BFA in photography from The Ohio State University and found her way back to Texas. Leslie spent the next decade photographing people and events across the country and teaching herself to paint. In 2016 she began showing paintings in her Houston studio and in exhibitions within the city. In 2019 she signed with her first art gallery and had her first solo exhibition. Leslie’s painting practice is driven by color and the surprises that happen when she releases expectation (a lesson she is still trying to learn about life). Leslie lives with her husband, an accidental cat, and four sons who inspire her mark-making and her tendency toward whimsy.  Welcome to the podcast, Leslie Gaworecki!

On today's podcast I interview a new Lucky Star instructor, Yasmin Youssef. Yasmin is a visual artist living and working in Austin, Texas. Her mixed media collage, NFTs, and cyanotype work is influenced by her multi-cultural heritage as well as her professional careers as a Middle Eastern dancer and User Experience designer. While designing enterprise level software for the tech industry, Yasmin was also performing nationally and internationally with Thievery Corporation, Govinda, and as a member of the dance collective she co-founded. Yasmin’s artistic pursuits expanded into visual art as a natural way to gather and present ethereal & moving experiences.

In her mixed media works, inspired by lifespans of beauty and decay in the Natural World, Yasmin reveals deep layers and rich texture by building up and scraping back materials such as vintage collage ephemera, plaster, acrylics, gold leaf, and mark-making. Her work explores common themes, including rich color palettes, elements from the Natural World, and moods of introspection, connection, and internal strength.

This will be Yasmin’s first time teaching at Lucky Star Art Camp and she is excited to share her techniques for creating mixed media collage portraits as well as mini travel journals. Welcome to the podcast, Yasmin Youssef!

On today’s podcast, I’m joined by Kate O’Brien.  Kate is a multi-passionate creative and outdoor enthusiast. In 2019, Kate stepped away from a long career in commercial interior design, to pursue a different creative path and lifestyle.  She relocated to her historic Hill Country property, tending to her AirBNB, gardens, cats, dogs, numerous chickens and longtime boyfriend. From there, she does a few projects each year, particularly designing interiors for the homes of severely wounded veterans. 

Kate was introduced to tomahawk throwing several years ago, on an expedition in the Tetons, with her sons and later honed her skills under the guidance of a national tomahawk throwing champion. “Texas Hawks “ was soon launched as an offering at retreats, fundraisers and corporate team building. Kate finds the activity seems to especially resonate with women, combining stress relief with a feeling of empowerment. Welcome to the podcast Kate O’Brien!

On today’s podcast I’ll be talking to a new Lucky Star instructor Nam Joti Kaur Khalsa.  Nam is a self-taught professional Henna artist and has been practicing the art of Henna adornment for herself and others for over twenty years. She also teaches about the history of Henna’s uses throughout time and place.  Nam finds inspiration for her art through the natural world, ancient textiles and folk art. She has taught the course that she developed: “The Mystery & Art Of Henna” in person, virtually and at the “Good Medicine Confluence” in Durango, Colorado. 

Nam is a mother, wife, teacher of Yoga and meditation, practicing herbalist, gardener and maker of brooms and heirloom dolls. She lives on a homestead in the Texas Hill Country where she and her family raise goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks and pigs.

On today's episode we visit with the queen of glueing stuff to stuff, Jennifer Perkins. A self proclaimed ADD crafter, Jennifer is a Jill of several different crafty trades. One minute she’s making candles from crayons the next she’s collaging with a 70’s Sears catalog.  The constant theme through those creative endeavors is her love of kitsch, color and all things vintage.  Whether she is crafting or decorating a Kitschmas tree, her distinct style shines through.

Jennifer has had as many careers within the creative industry as she has had crafty passions.  She started her creative career as a jewelry designer but has worn many hats through the years including television host, brand ambassador and craft magazine editor. She has done ad campaigns for Michaels, been a guest on the Rachael Ray show multiple times and had her work featured in places like Country Living, Better Homes and Gardens and Houzz.  Most recently Jennifer is working on her 4th craft book which will be available in the fall of 2022.

Rena has a passion for creating, learning, and teaching.  As a former high school teacher with a love of art, making, and crafting... it makes sense that this combination of teaching and creating has evolved into a life of curating experiences as a student and instructor.  So what might Rena be doing at any given moment? Maybe painting a piece of art, making a custom table with her blow torch, cooking a good meal, knitting a scarf, scrapbooking family pics, weaving, or paint pouring… She’ll pretty much try her hand at any art or craft and then refine it to teach it to others.

On today’s podcast, Lisa and producer Shawn are talking with a new Lucky Star instructor, Monica Grant.  Monica is a Creative Process Designer and Facilitator with Ideas To Go (ITG), a leading innovation consulting practice that works with companies across all types of industries.  Her day job is her dream job, in which she does project work to help teams clarify their challenges, generate lots of possibilities for how to solve them, and prioritize the ideas they’re the most excited about.  (She also loves that scribbling on easel charts is a big part of her job.). Monica has been coming to Lucky Star for years, but this is her first year as an instructor.  She can’t wait to teach Creative Problem Solving & Brainstorming to her fellow campers! 

Monica lives in Dallas with her husband, their 7-year-old daughter, and a population of cacti.  In her free time, she likes to invent new recipes, make checklists, take trips to National Parks, and watch Formula 1.

This is no art retreat in a hotel conference room…and no, we’re not camping in tents… we’re actually “glamping” in climate controlled cabins that are built into the hillside overlooking the Guadalupe River, and we’re eating gourmet, chef-prepared food in a dining hall like we’re at Hogwarts!  We’re fully immersed in creative workshops like jewelry making, astrology, mixed media collage, apothecary, abstract painting, writing, sewing, yoga, welding, pottery, and we’ve even had classes on raising alpacas and tomahawk throwing!  No dishes, no laundry, no driving kids, and no deadlines or demanding bosses.  Just a solid five days to be YOU because we believe in the importance of discovering/reigniting the authentic part of you that makes you feel ALIVE and we know that CREATIVITY can be a powerful catalyst for growth, healing, self-care, connection, and just the spark you need to thrive.

On today's episode, Lisa and producer Shawn interview Lucky Star instructor Mandy Rowden, an Austin, Tx-based singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and the creator of Girl Guitar, a women’s guitar school and rock camp that is celebrating its 15th Anniversary in 2022. Mandy played classical violin and piano through college, where she began writing songs and has since worked and toured playing guitar, bass, keys, drums, fiddle, mandolin, and harmonica. Besides teaching and touring, Mandy is the resident musician at Lucky Star Art Camp and a contributing songwriter for Songs For The Soul. Her first full-length studio album ‘These Bad Habits’ (2015) featured Grammy winner Lloyd Maines (Dixie Chicks) and Grammy nominee Redd Volkaert (Merle Haggard) and was voted #2 Album of the Year in the Austin Chronicle Music Poll; since then she has placed in the Top Ten as Musician of the Year as well as Songwriter, Female Vocalist, Album, and Song of the Year. In March of 2018 Mandy released 'When That Day Comes' on Howlin' Dog Records and was nominated for Entertainer of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year in Nashville's Josie Music Awards. Her fourth studio album, 'Parachute', was released in March of 2021 to critical acclaim. In her spare time Mandy is pursuing a Master's Degree in Music History from Texas State University.

On today’s podcast I’ll be talking to a new Lucky Star instructor, Liberty Lindley.  Liberty has spent her life exploring creativity!  Her grandfather is an incredible artist so she grew up admiring the sculptures in his studio and being immersed in the world of art at a very young age. He loved art in all its forms and encouraged her exploring different visual arts mediums, as well as dance. It was no surprise that she attended an arts High School in South Florida and then graduated college earning a degree in Musical Theatre with a concentration in Dance. After graduation Liberty moved to NYC to chase Broadway and met her husband in a worship band they were in together. They moved to Nashville to pursue music, film, television and teach dance at the Nashville School of Dance. When their son came along they moved to her husband’s home town, Kerrville, Texas and soon added twin girls to their family! With a new career as a stay at home mom , Liberty turned to visual arts like mixed media collage, jewelry making, painting, and sewing eventually creating a small business, “Willow, Ivy and Whimsy” inspired by the many hair bows she made for her infant twins.  You can find Liberty on:

Originally from Central New York, she now hails from The Black Hills of South Dakota. With goals of empowering women, she works for Ride Wild, a company encouraging women in powersports. Most of her time is split between riding motorcycles and working on metal art and projects in the shop. She uses welding as her artistic outlet.
