31 Oct 2022The Power of Questions00:32:39

Today's episode is a special treat. Listen in on a recent webinar with Gated Talent about the power of asking questions during your interview.

Asking questions during an interview might be the most under-rated part of an interview. YES! You get to ask questions.

Make asking questions part of your interview strategy because an interview is your opportunity to evaluate the company and role for their fit to you as much as their determination of your fit for the position and culture.

The questions you ask provide you with information.

Your questions are also another way to showcase your skills and experience.

Biggest benefit to asking questions?

It creates the desired conversational nature of interviews that makes everyone involved more comfortable (and more like real-life people talking).

Best of all, when you ask questions you're opening up the door to share more of what makes you an awesome candidate.

It’s the perfect way to demonstrate what it’s like to work with you.

27 Feb 2023Overcome Micromanagement00:14:00

Micromanagement was the most selected "toxic" behavior on a recent poll Elissa did on LinkedIn. Not surprising since when you're dealing with a micro-manager, you feel like there's no trust.

It's demoralizing, frustrating and your confidence takes a hit. Eventually, micromanagement might even create a work situation that becomes unsustainable.

In this week's episode you'll learn techniques for restoring your confidence in the face of micromanaging behavior.

  • Remind yourself of your value, accomplishments and impact
  • Decide how you'll respond to micromanaging behavior in advance
  • Reduce the emotional impact micromanaging can have on you

04 Sep 2023It's OK That It's Messy00:13:40

What if you didn't have to follow your bliss? Or do what you love so you never have to work a day in your life?

I'm not a fan of those statements because they're a little fluffy for me but mostly because I believe doing hard things like overcoming obstacles and feeling the discomfort and doing it anyway is where the magic is.

Instead of avoiding the messy, uncomfortable stuff in your work life because you think it means something is wrong, embrace it.

That's how you tap into the abundance in your own brain, figure things out and give yourself something to celebrate when you feel the discomfort and do it anyway.

Have you felt undervalued in an organization? It can be devastating to feel like your company isn't invested in your growth, but the mindset that goes along with this feeling does not lead you to success when it comes to the job search. In fact, investing in your own excellence can set the foundation that makes your job search 10x more effective.

15 Nov 2021How to Find Your Career Direction00:19:36

It can feel good to have options, but it's typically fear that sets us back from choosing an option, or a direction. When we're making a pivot or looking at our career long-term, we have to identify what it is we love to do, and balance that with our ideal role. Finding a new direction doesn't have to be difficult, but it has to be well-thought-out. This episode will help you uncover that for yourself, and your future.

Having lots of options feels positive, but behind that thought could be fear, could be innefficiency. If you're not taking action against something, then it's good look closer at it. [If] the answer you give yourself about your career direction is, "I don't know," [...] then it's a lie! It's choosing not to decide. Even if you do pursue it and figure out it's not right for you, it's alright. It's alright to change our minds!

In this episode, you'll discover the reasons why people end up directionless, and the steps you must take to identify your path and stay on it. In addition, I give you the questions to ask yourself that help find the thing you love best about your position. We can use these answers to see our direction.

03 Apr 2023It's About Purpose00:14:42

Oprah Winfrey said ::

"I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you."

Does this quote both inspire and alienate you? Elissa has a bit of a love/hate relationship to this quote, too. It's called contrast.

The realization that what you want isn't what you have.

But it's possible to use contrast to your advantage when you look at it through the lens of purpose and potential.

In this week's podcast, Elissa shares how to discover what you love about what you're doing today so you can apply it in new contexts.

Identify practical, tactical, strategic and interpersonal "loves" in your day to day. Then discover how you serve others by asking yourself, "Who are the people who are depending on me for their success?"

When you uncover the core things you love and know how to see what you do as service to others, you'll realize you can find these in any role at any level.

It's a skill you can use to survive and thrive in your workplace and career today and whatever you decide to do in your future.

29 Nov 2021Overcoming Job Search Challenges - Part 100:11:52

The trials and tribulations of the job search are not unlike those we face in regular life. There are ups, downs, setbacks, waiting, watching, hoping, and success. In our job search, it can be frustrating to continue if we've been giving energy to the negative side, but if we have solutions to the things that set us back, we can land our dream job much faster.

Think about this concept when it comes to your job search. There's going to be 50% of life and your job search that goes great, and there's going to be 50% that doesn't feel good, or isn't going the way you want it to. What is awesome about 50/50 is when you know that it's normal ahead of time, you don't over celebrate the good stuff, and you also don't stress out about the bad stuff.

In this episode, I help you overcome the common job search challenges. I uncover the framework you need to break down and complete challenges that come up. I cover organization, thoughts you tell yourself, context, Thursdays, and more within this multi-episode miniseries.

18 Jul 2022Grace, Flow & Grit00:18:16

Staying "up" for your job search can feel like a never ending battle. Words like, grind, willpower and discipline come to mind. But willpower comes and goes. What if it was possible to create the kind of state you need to keep going anytime you want?

In this week's episode, I teach you how grit (passion + perseverance), flow (presence, productivity and creativity) and grace (simple, effortless movement) can be created like turning on a faucet.

All in a way that works for YOU!

Your thoughts are the way to creating everything you need to land a job or advance your career.

Pick a new thought (or a few).

Rehearse, practice and believe those thoughts ahead of time with as much imagination and emotion as possible. Believe it until you feel it. Then act on the feeling so you can take the actions required to create the result. Also known as landing the job or elevating your career.

01 Aug 2022Open More Doors, Part 200:14:03

You've put in a lot of time submitting online applications, but you're getting no responses. You're starting to think things like, "What am I doing wrong?" You find yourself feeling lonely, inferior, and vulnerable. Those thoughts lead to these feelings, and these feelings are going to lead you to inconsistent action because nobody wants to face feeling that way! It can be really challenging and demoralizing to face a lengthy job search day in and day out.

What if it was actually possible to get job offers in a short amount of time with very few, if any, online applications? I have a game-changing strategy for you.

Reach out to human beings.

There's stuff that happens when you apply online and you don't know what's going on behind the scenes. As a job seeker, you need to be reaching out to people. Today, I'm going to explain how to do this. And if you do this, you will spend far less time and be far more productive in your job search.

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain with this approach.

Push open those doors. Be bold. Reach out to the gate keepers and the people that can move you forward.

28 Nov 2022Ride Out the Storm00:18:35

It is stormy out there, my friends, and I'm not talking about the weather. If you're finding yourself in the middle of a workplace storm -- be it a sudden one, or ongoing bad weather -- this is for you.

I'm reminded of those thunder shirts you can get for your pet to help them stay calm during a physical storm. What would it look like to have a thunder shirt for your thought process when you find yourself in a stormy situation? I want to share some tips with you today to help you ride it out.

1) Be present with your own thoughts

2) Be gentle with yourself

3) Focus on what you can control: YOU

With this strategic approach, you will be able to rise to the occasion in ways you didn't even think possible, because you ARE capable! You CAN ride the storm out, and you can come out BETTER on the other side.

18 Sep 2023Forecast Your Future00:16:04

When you're in business (as most of us are) forecasting is an activity almost every organization participates in during Q4.

It's about data, historical trends, competitive intelligence and market analysis.

Good business forecasts determine what's realistically possible.

But if you're not careful, this business process can become the same framework you use to plan your future. The result will be limiting.

Your future is not based on ::

  • past success or failure
  • your real or perceived competition
  • fitting into the market (aka someone else's thoughts about you)

In this episode, Elissa coaches you on how to change your thinking so you can forecast a bright, achievable future - even if it feels impossible.

24 May 2021Show Up With Your Transferable Skills00:15:42

The job searchers worst nightmare is ending up in a role that's not a good fit or even worse, a company culture that is not a good fit. Surprisingly, many job searchers do not even know their own style of behavior!

[Knowing which style you are] will help you identify great roles for yourself and identify organizations and teams where you'll thrive.

I'm a firm believer that everybody has leadership skills. Some show up as persuasive and other show up as direct and straightforward. The same goes for relationships; how do you communicate and show up for others?

On this episode, you'll discover how to leverage your own behavioral skills and learn how to translate them into a tactic to build relationships and find the job that's right for you. We'll go over communication and leadership styles along with how to use them to communicate with an interviewer, hiring manager or coworker.

22 Nov 2021How to Know What You're Worth00:09:50

We've all felt imposter syndrome. We've all felt like we're not worth it, or we're not good enough for the things we truly want. In life, we'll do anything for the ones we love. Many times though, we don't apply that same logic to ourselves.

You have to show up for yourself and to do that you have to believe you're worth it.

"What you decide in your mind must play out in your actions. You're never going to get a job you think you'll never get! You're failing in advance, my friend! You prove your worth by the thoughts and feelings you have, and the actions that you take." Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.31

In this episode, you'll discover how to know what you're worth, prove it to yourself, and how to do that to accomplish your goals in the job search.

20 Feb 2023Don't Sweat the Hard Stuff00:17:24

We'll all encounter challenging, even hard, things at work. Everything from learning new things to toxic work environments. But questioning and defining hard can dramatically change your experience of it.

Science tell us our cells are listening to and responding to our thoughts. If our experience of physical health is affected by our thoughts, it emphasizes even more how we can determine the external world we encounter.

In this week's episode you'll learn three ways to start to tackle "hard" stuff without minimizing effort or action.

You can do the hard stuff without sweating it.

1) Define "hard"

2) Stay committed

3) You can do it (again)

And when you need it, find a quote, a song, an anthem to give you words you can turn in to the thoughts that will help you take on the hard things.

Here's one that was shared with me recently. Talk about determination!

Drawing from her experience coaching clients through career transitions, Elissa encourages listeners to take a “philosophy check-in,” develop true self-awareness, and visualize their next move before taking action.

"When you decide that your work matters, no matter what your work is, you'll start to find a sense of purpose. Your value add is needed in a way that only you can offer." - Elissa Shuck

11 Jul 2022Start With What You Have00:14:39

There will always be lack, there will always be "never enough" or "not quite there" when you all you can think about is what's missing. This is a problem! The reason this is a problem is because what's going on in your mind is what you experience in your reality. In today's episode, I talk about the solution to this problem and why you must fix it.

When the focus is on what you have -- right now, today -- and the value that you've accumulated over time, what you're doing is you are unlocking things that have been sitting there in your brain waiting to be put to use. - Elissa, LYWL, Ep. 64

The human brain is wired by default to look for what's wrong. This is why training your mind is one of the most -- if not THE MOST -- important things you can do to navigate life. When you are intentional with your mindset, your overall message about your value will speak for itself. Acknowledge your accomplishments. Embrace that you are enough and you are worthy.

13 Sep 2021Why LinkedIn is the Best Platform to Find a Job00:14:13

There are 55 million companies on LinkedIn and at least 14 million jobs posted on the platform. Beyond that, almost half of all recruiters use the platform regularly. When it comes to job search, LinkedIn is the most effective place to network, apply, and lands jobs if done correctly.

LinkedIn can be so powerful, because you have roles you can apply to directly. You can save roles so you can get to them easily, and you can use LinkedIn's powerful search capabilities to find people. If you're not sure what you want from your next role, you can use LinkedIn to find jobs you already have the skills for! - Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.21

In this episode, I highlight the benefits of LinkedIn, the importance of finding hiring managers through job postings, exactly what to say to hiring managers when reaching out, how to set up your profile correctly so you can stand out, and how to find jobs you're perfect for, but didn't know existed.

20 Dec 2021Qualifications in the Job Search Part 1 - Over-Qualification00:12:08

It turns out that reciting your long history of experience isn't the best way for an interviewer to identify if you're the perfect person for a role. As you know from previous episodes, it's more about how you frame what you've done, and more importantly, how you frame what you'll be able to do for a prospective employer.

I'm not suggesting that you dumb down your skills, accomplishments, or anything else. What I am suggesting is, in an interview, in these conversations, you [should] apply the concept that it isn't all about you, so the other person sees you as a great candidate. We think that we need to tell them everything, but you'll slip into convincing energy, or even steam roll over the hiring manager and eliminate yourself from consideration! - Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.35

In this episode, you'll discover the reason why someone would be considered over-qualified, how to strategize to explain your experience the right way, and how to apply these concepts to actually get hired.

15 May 2023How to Make Decisions - Part 200:17:08

Decision can be defined as "a committed action driven by a committed thought".

Last week Elissa talked about decisions and the stories we tell ourselves about them. This week she is sharing some ideas to help us reframe decisions and to think about them more strategically and intentionally.

>> Everything is optional

>> There are no right or wrong decisions

>> The more decisions you make, the better

>> Don't delay

Remember, decisions are the ultimate power we have in our lives. We get to choose what we think about, the actions we take, and we get to decide over and over again.

You can choose that committed action that's driven by a committed thought and create the life and the career you envision for yourself.

24 Jan 2022How to Create Career Growth00:14:19

Let's face it, we've all had opportunities for growth throughout our careers whether we knew it in the moment or not. As you've listened to the show, you've heard me encourage you to focus on those things that are under your own control. It turns out that growth is one of those things. Consistent growth is possible, but not without conscious effort.

I'm fond of the statement, "everything I want is on the other side of the next action I take." Not all of the actions. When you suspend judgment about that next action, it allows you to move forward and let things unfold for you. Ideas create more ideas, actions create more actions. This is the law of nature, so take advantage of it! - Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.39

In this episode, you'll discover the 7 steps to achieve career-wide growth. The career growth path includes the power of the next action, doing versus trying, the power of the first step, facing rejection, and more.

26 Jun 2023Banish Burnout In Advance00:24:26

You're doing the things you need to do. You're setting boundaries, you're scheduling activity, obeying your schedule, showing up for yourself with rest and self-care. Why do you still feel burnt out?

Our feelings and our bodies often feel the signs of burnout before our brain catches up, so be watching for those little signals. - Elissa, LYWL, Ep. 112

There's lots going on out there, friends. Demands to do more with less, job searches that seem to go on forever and toxic workplaces that zap your strength so that even if you want to leave, you don't have the energy to do it.

So, this week I'm revisiting a previous podcast about burnout. In it I share a few thoughts that I learned from Rob Bell about some other things that could be going on under the surface.

1) The "Something to Prove" Approach - "This is supposed to be hard, otherwise it's not real."

2) The Sense of Obligation - "This is my wheelhouse, I can't look outside of it."

3) The Label - "I need to be associated with -that- industry in order for people to take me seriously."

4) The Ladder - "I've got to do the corporate climb, because that's the thing to do."

5) The "Too Much" Feeling - "I've got to do All The Things, I've got to show up, this is the way it's got to be done."

You can notice and manage these signals before they get out of hand so that you can move past those feelings, get out of that mode, and take the action you want to take.

11 Oct 2021How to Manage Your Time in the Job Search and Beyond00:13:23

Even if you weren't happy with your previous role, that doesn't mean we can't get practical about the skills that crossover into the job search. Chances are there were multiple tools, techniques, and strategies you used to manage your time and stay efficient that you can now apply to your search.

Time management requires discipline at the core, but taking some simple steps to schedule your tasks can make a world of difference when looking for a job.

It's not helpful to think of your job search like your full-time job when you didn't like your full-time job. What does work is thinking about the structures, tools, and resources you used to navigate your full-time job, and bring those over into your job search. Whatever you did to manage projects in your previous role, put on that same hat for yourself. - Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.25

In this episode, you'll discover how to transfer skills from your last role into the job search. I cover how to build discipline around your calendar, what to do if you're looking for a job while having a job and how to apply and implement an entrepreneurial mindset.

14 Feb 2022How to Find Purpose at Work00:13:44

Being in a toxic work environment doesn't only affect us in the workplace, but it can negatively impact our personal lives and our search for a new job.  Because of this, it is on us to identify our purpose in our current situation so we don't carry that with us to the next role.

"When you don't feel a sense of purpose at work, that lack of connection to the job you're doing can actually be baggage that travels along with you on your job search and prevents you from taking the action you need to take. That baggage will prevent you from landing a job quickly!" Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.43

In this episode, I uncover the steps to find and access your sense of purpose at work. You'll discover the exact actions you can take today to identify the behaviors that underpin specific activities. These behaviors are the key to unlocking your purpose.

04 Oct 2021Lessons Learned from Viktor Frankl00:14:05

Viktor Frankl was an Austrian psychiatrist, philosopher, author, and Holocaust survivor. He created the psychological construct, called "logotherapy" which asserts that the primary force of an individual is to find meaning in life.

I have an inclination that the great resignation we're seeing now has a lot to do with Frankl's philosophy which is based on a human's need for meaning. His book, "Man's Search for Meaning," is a critically acclaimed memoir about the intense recount of his life as he navigated the unpredictable and unimaginable existence within an Auschwitz concentration camp.

"It doesn't matter if you're a positive thinker or a realist. All that really matters is; are the thoughts you're having serving you or not? Are they getting you connected to the meaning you're seeking? There is a space between a thought and the meaning we attach to that thought." - Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.24

In this episode, I help you discover how to find meaning within your job or your job search right now. I also share with you Frankl's philosophy and apply it to the job search, or your current role. I discuss exactly how to ascribe meaning and take responsibility for your thoughts, and why that's important now more than ever.

13 Mar 2023What Are You Selling?00:18:35

In order to thrive in your career, you've got to be selling. This might sound frightening. But believe it or not, you are already doing it everyday.

We are all selling all the time. Everything from persuading your little one to do their chores to influencing someone at work to go with your idea is selling.

But we're selling when we aren't thinking about it, too.

When it comes to your career are you selling

  • Indecision
  • Lack of clarity
  • Indifference
  • Disbelief

Or are you selling yourself with belief and enthusiasm that's contagious?

In this week's episode, you'll learn how to figure out what you're selling.

If it's not the marketing message you want to put out there, you'll get tips on how to sell yourself to your team, your boss or for your prospective new role.

When you adopt these new "selling" habits, transferring belief and enthusiasm gets easier and easier. They'll be buying what you're selling!

If you think selling yourself isn't necessary. Think again.

If you don't pay attention to what you're selling, you're doing a disservice to the people who need you now and in the future.

More importantly, you're doing a disservice to you and your career.

You're far too valuable to let that happen.

21 Jun 2021Running Away From the Past versus Running Towards the Future00:12:05

Energy plays a big part in your ability to land a job. What you say is one thing, but how you present yourself and the energy you bring can be the difference between landing and not landing. It starts with your thoughts and the exact words you say to yourself.

"If you're going into a job search or a pivot or a promotion with that energy of disappointment, dread, and discomfort it can be felt by the person you're talking to. Instead, if you focus on what you're running toward, you tap into higher levels of critical thinking."

On this episode you'll discover the difference between running towards your goals and running away from where you currently are. In addition, I'll explain the physics behind positive energy and how that will make a huge impact in your career.

13 Jun 2022Move Your Move, Part 100:19:38

The very first step to making your move starts with taking some time to observe your thoughts, your career, and where you are today. In this first part of a three-part series, I'm going to give you tools to help you look for evidence and start changing the meaning you've assigned to your past, so that you can measure it as success instead of measuring it as failure. In doing so, success will become an inevitable part of your future.

If you're ready to make your move, start with observing what's going on now, and just in the observation of it, things will start to change. -Elissa, LYWL, Ep.60

27 Dec 2021Qualifications in the Job Search Part 2 - Under-Qualification00:14:10

We've all felt inexperienced in one way or another, but when you're underqualified on paper, it can be difficult for employers to notice your value and your ability to grow. It's more about understanding what applies and doesn't apply from your previous experience, and then using that to make it easy for a hiring manager to understand your future value.

When you think about your transferrable skills, and you start looking for those common threads, the common denominators between what you've done and what you want to do, you will start to feel more secure about it. You've got to connect the dots for yourself before you connect the dots for anyone else. That's how you do it.

In this episode, you'll discover how to identify and frame your transferrable skills for a new role. I cover what to look for in job descriptions to uncover inside language, how to leverage your behavioral strengths to stand out, and how to include your accolades in the right way to give the hiring manager that 'ah ha' moment that solidifies you as the right candidate.

08 Aug 2022Heroic Interviews00:13:17

How do you convey your value in an interview? This is an interesting challenge. We are tempted to talk too much, to jam too much information into our answers in an attempt to cover all the bases. This actually has the opposite effect. When you try to be "all the things" all you do is water down your message.

So, just how DO you actually get all your value across (and more!) to the person you're talking to? The solution is simple:

Curiosity.

Seek first to understand, then be understood. - Stephen Covey, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

The number one thing you can do to make a lasting impression in an interview is ask questions. Ask questions from a place of curiosity, helpfulness, and understanding.

You don't need to be the hero in this conversation. Be the consultant. Be the guide. Listen and ask questions all along the way. Paint a picture about what it's like to work with you.

This is so powerful!

You WILL stand apart from other candidates, no doubt about that.

07 Aug 2023The Best Kind of Stubborn00:13:06

When we hear the word "stubborn" we often think of the definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result. But there is a good kind of stubborn.

It's the tenacity, dedication, and commitment that comes from deep inside you. This week, Elissa talks about that good stubbornness, and compares healthy vs. unhealthy stubbornness.

Be stubborn enough to believe that what you want is possible, and stubborn enough to invest in yourself. Sometimes that stubborn streak is just the thing you need to give it one more chance, to go one more day, to take one more small action.

When you decide to leverage this good kind of stubbornness -- to achieve the things you set out to achieve -- you are going to win.

21 Dec 2023How To Be Influential00:33:51

Leadership month continues!

As a middle manager, it's crucial that you influence down through your team and up to your manager and leadership above you.

This is important because without influence you feel powerless and invisible, ultimately limiting your impact and career accomplishments.

Fortunately, it doesn't take a magic formula to create influence. It only requires intention and these three principles ::

  • Inspire enthusiasm
  • Create a sense of purpose
  • Provide recognition

You inspire enthusiasm by showing genuine enthusiasm, communicating a compelling vision and leading by example.

A sense of purpose is created by connecting individual goals to the larger purpose, sharing success stories and impact, and fostering a supportive and collaborative environment.

Recognition is all about offering sincere and specific praise, providing opportunities for growth and development, and celebrating successes and milestones.

We'll go deep into all of these with strategies and actions you can take to start developing incredible influence throughout your organization!

And as usual, Elissa shares specific strategies for influence with your team and influence with leadership.

Listen to episode 137 and be inspired to create and leverage your influence!

Ready to level up your leadership skills?

1. Develop clear, effective communication strategies to inspire and motivate your team.

2. Master the art of influence and persuasion to drive organizational success.

3. Gain confidence in your decision-making abilities and lead with conviction.

4. Cultivate a positive and productive work environment that fosters innovation.

Second guessing and questioning is one thing, being a curious and compassionate watcher of our brains is something else.

The only thing that you need to trust your decision is to really like your reasons for making that decision. - Elissa, LYWL, Ep. 52

In this episode I talk about the distinction between second-guessing yourself and being a curious watcher of your brain. I will teach you a very simple way to manage second-guessing and how to instead love the decisions you make in your career and in your life.

17 Oct 2022Look for the Evidence00:16:55

How do you break out of feeling "stuck" in your career or job search? To put it simply, you identify new opportunities and take action.

Sometimes, though, that can sound a lot easier than it actually is. Why? What is making something so apparently simple, so difficult? Well, there are likely things that are working against you -- your thoughts and behavior patterns. You can't just willpower your way out of them all the time, can you?

The problem there is that our brains are always looking for evidence to prove what we are thinking is true. Today I want to challenge you to interrupt your UNINTENTIONAL thoughts that aren't serving you, that are keeping you stuck, by asking yourself some INTENTIONAL questions. Questions like:

"Is this actually true?"

"Is this a self-imposed limitation?"

"What if the opposite was true?"

Select new thoughts that serve you better, then practice them by writing them down and repeating them to yourself every day. When you start intentionally looking for evidence that these new thoughts are true, you'll create a habit in your brain to keep looking for that evidence and that feeling of being stuck is going to go away.

The one thing you can control is your thoughts, and the really good news is this: Thoughts create results!

15 Aug 2022Job Search 10100:36:04

09 Jan 2023Principles to Work By, Part 100:23:34

This week I'm so excited to start a new series of episodes focused on Japanese lifestyle principles that have some amazing intersections with how we do and love our work life.

First up is the perfect way to start out 2023: Ikigai. This means "life purpose," and the concept is all about adding personal meaning to your life in relation to what makes you tick. There are four parts to Ikigai:

1) Contribution

2) Passion

3) Talent

4) Career

In this episode, I dive deeper into the four parts of Ikigai and how they relate to your work life, as well as give you some questions to ask yourself to identify these four things in your own life. Remember, Ikigai isn't so much about going out into the world and finding something as it is looking inward and understanding at a deep level how you are wired as a human being.

31 Jul 2023What's Your Value Equation?00:25:50

Whether you realize it or not, you are in a value exchange with your job. How you feel at work is a direct reflection of that exchange. Feeling not-so-hot? That's a good sign that the value exchange is not equitable.

In this episode, Elissa walks you through the following steps to take if you're not feeling great about your job:

>>> list what you are receiving/want to receive in exchange for what you're providing in your job

>>> write out what each thing on the list means to you

>>> ask yourself: are you receiving what you want?

>>> ask yourself: what is the story you're telling yourself about what you're getting/not getting?

Finally, Elissa shares how to manage inequity in your job while you look for something different.

Remember, your work is value that you are putting out into the world. It's worth something. It's valuable. It has an impact.

20 Jun 2022Make Your Move, Part 200:16:10

How do you springboard from observation into motivation so that it's actually leading you to a better destination? In Part 2 of this 3-part series, I've put together some thoughts on motivation that I want to share with you, and some guidance on how you can create motivation through leverage.

At a basic level, our behavior is governed by avoiding pain or gaining pleasure. -Elissa, LYWL, Ep.61

Leverage is using both pain and pleasure to create motivation for yourself. Here are few pain/pleasure questions to ask yourself to create this leverage:

Pain-associating questions:

• “What will this cost me?”

• “What has it cost me in the past?”

• “What is it costing the people I love?”

• “What is it costing me in (lifestyle, opportunity, family, etc.)?”

Pleasure-associating questions:

• “If I change this now, how will my life be?”

• “What will I gain?”

• “What will it mean for the people I love?”

• “What will it give me?”

You can go back to these questions over and over again to maintain the leverage and motivation you've created. Without motivation, none of those amazing plans and goals you've made will really matter. Any kind of meaningful change in your life or in your career is underpinned by motivation.

LYWL Episode 9: Running Away From the Past versus Running Towards the Future

21 Feb 2022How To Ace The Interview Bookends00:12:08

How you answer key questions at the beginning and end of an interview can be crucial to your success in the job search. I like to refer to these as interview bookends – and most people don’t know how to approach them.

“If there are two questions that give people the most heartburn during an interview – it’s the questions that I call the bookends, they are ‘tell me about yourself’ and ‘why should we hire you’. We all know they’re coming.” -Elissa Shuck, LYWL Ep. 44

In this episode, we’ll break down each question and get some insight into the hiring manager’s perspective. You’ll discover what to include in your responses (as well as what not to include) and how to present it all in a way that is authentic and compelling.

02 Oct 2023Truth & Lies, Part 200:15:43

What would it look like if you talked to yourself like someone you love?

Last week we talked about lies and how when we lie to ourselves, it becomes so easy to break the promises that we've made to ourselves.

In this episode we're going to dig deeper into how to identify the lies and replace them with truths:

--Acknowledge the negative feelings. Allow yourself to be real and vulnerable with yourself.

--Question whether a thought is actually true or a lie you're telling yourself.

--Write a new true statement.

--Practice. Over and over and over.

Remember, you spent a lot of years creating those destructive thought patterns, but you can change your entire life. Changing your life isn't the hard part. Giving yourself permission is hard. It requires practice. But my friends, it is 100% worth it.

YOU are 100% worth it.

It all happens inside Strategic Leadership Lab. An exclusive cohort where you get unparalleled support as a middle management leader.

02 Jan 2023Have Better Conversations00:17:50

Today, I want to talk to you about navigating a toxic workplace while you are job searching. It can be so challenging to bring your authentic energy into an interview when you're stuck in survival mode. And people want to see the Real You, not Survival You.

In this episode, I'm teaching you how to manage it so you're no longer bound by the negative circumstances around you. It requires paying attention to the thoughts you have that accompany those circumstances, and intentionally breaking through that monologue of negative thoughts that runs through your brain.

Replace that monologue with a dialogue -- question the thoughts that you have and replace them with thoughts that serve you. You can take charge of YOU so that you can get what you want faster, easier, and better, while also protecting yourself in your toxic workplace.

Yes, today I'm teaching you how to have better conversations -- with yourself. Because when you manage your mind, the circumstances at your job don't actually have to change for you to feel like the Real You again.

06 Feb 2023When Less Is More00:17:48

Do you feel like you have career disadvantages? Things like ::

  • Being Self-Employed
  • Doing Freelance
  • Too long at one company
  • Too many different companies
  • Too many different roles

Or like my career... an eclectic mix!

You never have disadvantages in your career as long as you know how to leverage the value you've created as an entrepreneur, long-time employee or contractor with lots of projects.

The way to do it is editing.

When you're sharing your career on your resume and during interviews, you need to be careful that it's not everything you can (or want) to say about yourself. That just leads to overwhelm for them and you.

Instead, take a less is more approach and do your sorting in advance. You'll have clarity for yourself and it will be much easier for them, too.

Listen to this week's episode to learn how to hold on to your career value while making it easy for others to see why you're an awesome candidate.

23 Jan 2023Principles to Work By, Part 300:18:26

If you find yourself stuck in perfectionism, this episode is for you! Continuing my series this week, I'm talking about my favorite Japanese principle thus far: the principle of Wabi-sabi. This is the concept of beauty in imperfection and in the transient aspects of life.

In this episode, I start by breaking down the exact opposite of Wabi-sabi -- Perfectionism. This lie from your brain robs you of opportunities, holds you back, and is deeply connected to Imposter Syndrome.

Then we dive into Wabi-sabi itself, and how it can help you move past those destructive patterns of thinking, with three actions you can take:

1) Look for beauty in the imperfection of things you already hold dear

2) Be intentional about accepting imperfect qualities and quirks in the people you love

3) Appreciate and celebrate the value in your journey and in your scars

When you make Wabi-sabi a principle to work by, you will realize there is beauty you would never have experienced had you not gone through those imperfect moments and situations. You will learn to look for -- and eventually celebrate -- the value in ALL of the things you're going through.

17 Jan 2022How to Leave a Job You Hate00:11:51

As we step into the new year, many of us are becoming aware of our own actions that aren't serving us. For those who are still in jobs they're not happy with, it can be difficult to figure out exactly how to get out. It turns out that working in a job we hate can cost us more than we recognize.

"I want you to think about what it's costing you to stay in that job that you hate. That job that's uncomfortable, that toxic environment. It's costing you your self-esteem, it's costing you financially, it's costing you your self worth because you work your butt off and you're never appreciated. I've been there. That's a battle when you're in a place that's not appreciating you." Elissa on LYWL EP.39

In this episode, you'll discover the real impact of a terrible job and the side effects that come along with it. Learn how to help yourself, transform the exit from a 'want' to a 'must', and finally, how to create leverage to switch your mindset by putting yourself in your future-self's position.

03 Oct 2022Flip the Script00:15:31

Too many times we go into interviews devaluing ourselves. Just think-- if you already had the job, what would your mindset and behavior look like?

In today's episode, I'm giving you some specific questions you can ask in interviews to flip the script in your mind. Because an interview is not just about them evaluating you. Don't leave all the question-asking to them! You must evaluate the job and the company's fit for yourself, as well.

Some specific "fit check" questions I cover:

1) salary

2) opportunity

3) longevity

4) impact

Remember, it's not annoying or offensive to ask questions. It actually makes you look smart and shows that you care. Use these questions to springboard from and come up with even more questions, and also check out the link below for more.

06 Sep 2021How to Make Your Interviews Conversational00:17:49

For many, the interview can be the most daunting part of the job search. Interviewees are forced to face the uncomfortable reality of interviewing with somebody they've never met. On the other hand, the interviewer may have countless other candidates to speak with. That's why it is important to build rapport with the hiring manager. To do this, we can follow these simple tips to turn your discomfort into a completely controllable conversation.

"You're being put into a situation that is filled with uncertainty until you take control of the conversation. In a conversational interview, you have way more control over how to make that happen than you might be giving yourself credit for." - Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.20

In this episode, I cover how to turn an uncomfortable interview into a conversation, how to use curiosity to ask the right questions in an interview, how to relate to the hiring manager, and how to identify the solutions to their problems while highlighting your skills.

10 Oct 2022Just One Step00:16:15

It can feel like there is an overwhelming number of things to do in Job Search Mode. But the solution to managing All The Things is simple: focus on Just One.

In this current moment, there is only ONE thing that you need to be doing. Don't get stuck thinking about anything else -- let that stuff happen when it happens. Today I want to talk about how to break your job search into steps and figure out what is the One Thing you need to be doing right now. Let's take a look at some of those things:

1) define your accomplishments and strengths

2) construct a resume

3) research roles and companies

4) reach out directly to recruiters

5) interview prep and company research

Just do one thing at a time. Step 1 will always lead to Step 2 but you don't have to worry about Step 2 -- or Step 18 -- until it happens! Don't get stuck on that hamster wheel. This strategy will make your life so much easier and take so much stress out of your job search, trust me!

27 Sep 2021How to Ask the Right Questions in an Interview00:17:13

Interviews can be daunting, but it's on you as the job seeker to develop and hone strategies that allow you to bring the best version of yourself to the interview. This makes both your job and the hiring manager's job easier.

I've touched on conversational interviews, but it's time to break down how to ask the proper questions to make that interview a conversation. Ultimately, this builds trust, lets your own guard down, and lets the interviewer know what you bring to the table all at the same time.

"The best interviews are conversational. The quicker you can get to a natural back in forth, the better it's going to be. That's why I want you to process all those doubts, that's why I want you to get super clear on your value going in so that the questions aren't laced with pain [or] suspicion. I want you to dispel all of that going in, and enter with curiosity." Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.23

In this episode, I break down the exact questions to ask in an interview. I also apply lessons from EP.20, "How to Make Your Interviews Conversational," and take it a step further by combining the preparation piece, with the mindset piece. You'll discover how to use curiosity to frame your questions, how to act like a consultant to hit on pain points, and more.

16 Aug 2021Unlock Success in the Job Search00:16:04

When applying for a job, it's easy to get caught up in the bullet points and the description, but when everybody's first impression is done with a resume, you have to think differently about standing out. As a job seeker, you need to apply principles of success to gather your focus and frame your value to secure that interview and land your dream job. The first issue that job seekers face is the loss of their last job.

"No matter how clear you are about youself, you'll never be able to generate interest if you're still greiving your job loss, especially if you're bitter or resentful. That energy can be felt by others! Also, [when it comes to the job search] there is a numbers game component that is undeniable. I don't want it to take any longer than it has to!" - Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.17

In this week's episode, you'll discover the 3 C's of Job Search Success. Included are the hidden habits you have to break during the job-loss grieving process, how to identify and frame your value-add, the definition of constraint, how to use your physiology to your benefit, and the biggest issue facing job-seekers today when it comes to time.

09 Oct 2023Strength Zones00:22:16

What makes you tick? Why is it so important to identify your strengths?

When you have a sense of your strengths, you get a sense of possibility. You start looking at opportunities and evaluating if those fit YOU, instead of you trying to fit into the mold of a job.

A strength doesn't necessarily have anything to do with a record of success or ability, it goes far deeper than that. In this episode, Elissa walks you through Marcus Buckingham's acronym for identifying your strengths from his book Go Put Your Strengths to Work --

S - Success - What makes you feel happy?

I - Instinct - What are you drawn to?

G - Growth - What growth areas feel effortless?

N - Need - What things tap into your innate needs?

You owe it to yourself to look for the SIGNS!

26 Jul 2021Habits for the Job Search - Lessons Learned from "Tiny Habits" Part 200:18:47

In episode 10, I broke down some lessons from, "Tiny Habits," a book by BJ Fogg that details how your life can change drastically just by performing small habits consistently. Now, it's time to take these lessons and apply them to the job search so you can overcome the mental battle that many job seekers face. Using small, consistent actions when reaching out to recruiters, adding folks on LinkedIn, or editing your resume can transform your job search effectiveness.

Avoidance is an action! Be aware of your thoughts and feelings motivating those actions that you take. Any time your action is motivated from a feeling of fear, or doubt, or frustration, [that action] will never be as effective as something you're aspiring to or running towards.

In this episode, I break down the two steps you must know when it comes to applying habits to your job search. I also cover how to break down the force behind your action, or lack of action and how to reframe that and apply new actions to overcome it.

22 Feb 2024Daily Bookends00:13:43

There are way too many people walking around out there with their brains just in neutral, or worse -- focused on what's wrong, focused on what didn't go their way.

Isn't it funny how our brain always wants to go to the negative? It's so easy to focus on what is not going well, isn't it?

Well, friends, science tells us that we get what we focus on.

In this episode, I'm showing you the importance of starting and ending the day with intention and positivity. I call this daily bookends.

I'm talking about:::

2:34 - Starting the Day with Expectations of a Great Outcome

5:56 - Ending the Day by Acknowledging What Went Well

11:43 - Taking Control of Your Mindset and Creating a Positive Story

These simple, simple things I'm gonna teach you today are gonna make a huge difference to what's happening *between* the bookends, between the start of your day and the end of your day.

My friends, do not live life in neutral. Take control. Create that story. Lead a fulfilling and successful life.

30 May 2024Break Through Limitations00:22:12

In this episode I explore the concept of breaking through limitations and how to overcome them. I delve into the various types of limitations, the psychology behind them, and practical strategies for addressing and overcoming them.

We're all humans, my friends.

But we don't have to let those limitations hold us back.

Takeaways:

::: Limitations can be self-imposed or imposed by external circumstances.

::: Processing thoughts and emotions is key to overcoming limitations.

::: Emotional guidance can help identify when one is arguing for limitations.

::: Awareness of thoughts and feelings is crucial for breaking through limitations.

Sound Bites:

What would it mean to you to actually break through your limitations? What would it mean to break through the limitations that you believe exist in the circumstances all around you? It could change everything, right? Like if you could finally just punch that through, get on the other side of it.

And the first one is stop arguing for the limitations. When you do, it makes all the difference!

25 Jul 2022Open More Doors, Part 100:23:58

Have you ever had this thought that if you could just get in front of someone, you know you would do really well in the interview and you could get the job? If you're not getting interviews, it can only be two things:

1) Your resume isn't working hard enough for you

2) Your job search strategy is off

This week, we're tackling the first issue, your resume - How to get it to work harder, open those doors, give you the opportunity to talk, and help people see your value. A door-opening resume does 3 things:

1) Showcases your value

2) Demonstrates your capacity for contribution

3) Aligns with the roles you're seeking

I know, there's that stat out there that a recruiter only spends 6-7 seconds looking at a resume. When you follow the steps I'm outlining today, you're going to have a document that they will want to READ rather than SKIM. So get out your resume and your favorite pen, and follow along as I take you through the components of a compelling resume from top to bottom. Let's open those doors!

Here is my visual guide to create compelling LinkedIn profile.

19 Sep 2022How to Tell Your Story00:14:36

If you're interviewing a lot, but not getting offers, it could be that you're not getting your message across to the degree that you need. Today I want to teach you a framework I created that is going to help you change up your interviews and build up your story. It's an acronym that is especially helpful for those behavioral interview questions: DRAMA.

D - Dilemma

R - Role

A - Action

M - Metric/More

A - Advantage

Listen in as I teach you how to use this framework to help you understand and remember how to share the value you have in a way that's clear, understandable, and meets the needs that a behavioral question is seeking. With this, you'll be able to feel comfortable and authentic, while still getting your message across in a powerful way.

03 Jan 2022How to Be Grateful for Your Career00:13:14

When you're in job search mode it can be difficult to be grateful for what you already have because you're in the constant pursuit of your next position. It turns out that focusing on what we have now and being grateful for it can keep us motivated and realistic throughout our search. Being this is the first episode of the new year, I've included a quote to set ourselves on a path of gratitude.

Gratitude turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity...it makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow." — Melody Beattie

In this episode, you'll discover how to be grateful for your career. I include specific questions to expand on your challenges, losses and wins to go deeper with your answers. In addition, I help you give yourself credit for what you've accomplished already, and finally, I share my own experience getting demoted in a retail job, and how that shifted my perspective years later.

05 Sep 2022Achieve Your Goals00:15:50

What kind of approach do you have when setting a goal for yourself? If it's all just about the goal -- to the point that you won't be happy until you achieve that goal -- all the steps along the way just turn into drudgery and you will be miserable.

Ask yourself: What do I want my life to look like as I work toward this?

In today's episode, I encourage you to appreciate yourself and celebrate the value and energy you're bringing to the process. There is no reason to wait until after you achieve the goal to give yourself happiness and joy and appreciation.

Always look for the good in the process.

12 Sep 2022It's Good to Be You00:20:29

Everything that's created starts with a thought, including the evolution of ourselves. In today's episode, I talk about how you can truly become who you want to be. You could have all the resources in the world -- all the knowledge, courses, and Master's Degrees -- but if your thinking stinks, you're never going to achieve your full potential.

Think of your brain like an operating system.

1) Do a "thought download" to identify all the programs running in the background of your mind.

2) Update your operating system with new thoughts that DO serve you

3) Manage your thoughts consistently to keep you on track to the place you want to be.

Start your operating system update with this new thought: "I am worthy."

You are.

Say it to yourself.

Allow to it influence your thinking so that you can start to become the person you want to be.

13 Dec 2021Overcoming Job Search Challenges - Part 300:17:07

We've heard of the classic case of the 'Mondays', but what about the 'Thursdays'?

If you're in the job search you know what I'm talking about. Due to my research with myself and my clients, I've found that our motivation and positivity wavers as the week goes on.

"A job search has a unique way of exposing our 'humanness'. It often happens without our permission. We could be blindsided by job loss, [or] see it coming. It doesn't matter what level you are in your career. These 4 needs are universal to job seekers, whether you're in the job search, or looking while employed." - Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.34

In this episode, I'll help you discover the 4 ways to survive and thrive in your job search and eliminate any case of the 'Thursdays'. I'll give you the Thursday game plan to crush every Thursday. In addition, I break down the typical weekly job search schedule and why it's not working, and how to make a results list versus a to-do list.

23 May 2022Sell What They're Buyin'00:16:05
The reason people hire others is the same reason people buy things. - Elissa, LYWL, Ep. 57

If you're having trouble marketing yourself in interviews, you could have the best resume on the planet and you still won't get job offers. There are two pieces to marketing yourself and today I'm going to walk you through them.

First, the three levels of problem-solving:

1) the physical level

2) the emotional level

3) the philosophical level

Organize your answers to interview questions in a way that addresses all three levels.

Second, the Belief Triad:

1) belief in yourself

2) belief in your value

3) belief in the other person

The reason people buy things is because it will make their life easier and better, and the psychology behind hiring is exactly the same. Don't think of marketing yourself as a salesy, inauthentic thing -- it's a way to show someone that by hiring you, you can make their life easier and better. Believe that you can be their solution, and believe that they will see your value and take action.

29 Feb 2024Create Your Window00:13:37

"I don't feel like it today."

Sounds familiar, doesn't it? If you're like me, you've probably struggled with motivation -- even with things you WANT to do. We all have those things that for some reason, we just don't feel like it.

Routines get disrupted, circumstances come into our life, distractions happen so that we just get off course.

Today I want to empower you with three little words that will give you the grace and the space to get back into those habits: "Wait for it."

These three words will not only take the pressure off of you and prevent you from beating yourself up, but they carry a sense of inevitability that whatever "it" is -- it's going to happen! Give yourself the gift of "wait for it," my friends.

08 Nov 2021How to Create a Resume for a Career Change00:12:30

As a job seeker, rejection is part of the process. Fortunately, there are specific ways to improve your chances of landing an interview, and the resume is one of the most difficult things for job seekers to get right.

What is left out of your resume is equally as important as what is on it. Also, how you describe your skills and experience on the resume can be another key to attracting a higher manager, and ultimately landing that job.

"If you don't know what you want, you end up creating a resume for all things, for all people. If you don't, you're creating something that is confusing or mediocre. That's step one - know what role you are aiming for! Your resume is a message that is letting the recruiter know what they have to know about you so they can visualize you in the role." Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.29

In this episode, I give you the exact steps to create a resume specifically for a career change. You'll learn the most common mistake job seekers make when it comes to their resume, what to leave out on purpose, and how to use the proper language to land that next job.

25 Sep 2023Truth & Lies, Part 100:15:24

Did you know that the lies we tell ourselves can be the biggest roadblock to our success?

It's a hard pill to swallow, but the truth can set you free. When you tell yourself lies like "I'm too old," "I'm not good enough," or "I've tried everything," you’ll break promises you made to yourself, stay stuck, and prevent yourself from reaching your full potential.

"You define you. Age is a circumstance. Age does not define you." – Elissa Shuck

In this week’s episode:

- Discover the common lies we tell ourselves

- Techniques to challenge and change these lies

By cultivating disciplines like questioning the lie and using your emotions as a guidance system, you can rewire your brain away from destructive thought patterns to new thoughts that help you keep your promises to yourself.

As Viktor Frankl teaches in his book, "Man's Search for Meaning," every single person on the planet has the power to choose our own way, to choose the meaning that we attach to anything that's happening to us.

When you identify and challenge the lies you tell yourself, you can break free from self-imposed limitations and step into your full potential. It's not an overnight process, but it's a journey worth taking.

31 Jan 2022How to Create Career Resilience00:12:52

It's true that the greatest lessons in life can come from our hardest moments. The most difficult thing to do in those moments is to recognize that they exist to help us get better. Throughout your career, you will experience these moments but it is on you to build the resilience to face them head-on. As I've mentioned before, we can use our thoughts and emotions to guide us when we face tough times.

I want you to feel so good about your career and job search skills that you know that you can weather anything that gets thrown at you. I had to learn career resilience. I had to look at everything that happened to me as an opportunity. It may have felt like rejection. Those are all real feelings, but when you learn how to process those feelings you will create career resilience. - Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.40

In this episode, you'll discover the 5 steps to create career resilience. I cover how to develop a deep self-awareness of your value, how to articulate your own behaviors to yourself and others, how to appreciate your past successes and failures, are more.

18 Apr 2024How to Have Courage00:18:03

I love Brené Brown's teaching on being courageous through vulnerability. By her definition, being vulnerable is having the courage to lean in when things get tough -- to not quit when you're facing uncertainty or feeling exposed.

Being courageous in the sense of being vulnerable is so important.

Why? Because creativity, innovation, taking action is reliant on vulnerability -- on leaning in when it's uncomfortable.

So, how do you do it?

We do it with the three things I'm going to outline for you here. I believe they are key components of having a courageous career:::

03:04 - Facing Reality

07:42 - Listening to Emotions

11:00 - Unconditional Intention

Go out there and be courageous, my friends.

02 May 2022Be Smart in Your Interviews00:12:55

Interview prep is vital for planning what you're going to say, how you're going to say it, and today's topic: the questions you're going to ask. You can be strategic and give yourself even more opportunity to share your value when you ask great questions.

I want you to leverage every ounce of your value in an interview, and the best way to do that is to ask questions. - Elissa, LYWL, Ep. 54

Why ask questions? To get information, to get more context, to showcase your skills, and also to show the person who's interviewing you that you're curious, that you care, and that you're seeing a bigger picture. Today I'm going to teach you some great questions you can ask in interviews.

28 Feb 2022Don’t Make This Interview Mistake00:09:36

Job seekers often get anxiety talking about areas that they don’t excel in or aren’t as experienced in. We can’t help it if we aren’t 100% qualified for each and every position we apply to.

“We’re always battling imposter syndrome – feelings inside that diminish our experience. This is normal. But what if there is a particular hard skill that you really don’t have a lot of experience with?” -Elissa Shuck, LYWL Ep. 45

In this episode, I’ll teach you how to ease friction with any area that you lack qualifications in. You’ll learn how to craft a thoughtful and authentic response that keeps you in consideration during the interview.

23 Aug 2022You Must Ask Yourself00:15:57

Chances are you're telling yourself some untruths in your job search. But they're not the lies you might think they are...

Have you ever had any of these thoughts?

I don't know

I've tried everything

Nothing is happening

None of these thoughts are the truth and if you indulge them, you won't make progress in your job search or career.

In this week's episode, I talk about how these thoughts are projections of your inner being and how to move past them with questions you must ask yourself.

Don't accept the lies. Be a truth teller to yourself.

Show up as the person you'd like to be.

30 Aug 2021How to Make Energy Work for You in an Interview00:15:03

Nobody is immune to the challenges that come with the job search, and as a job seeker, it should be your priority to bring your best self to an interview. Marketing yourself is a completely different experience than marketing a product or service. To understand how to present yourself properly in an interview, you first have to understand the role that your energy and your thoughts play in the process of preparing and performing well in an interview.

"A sale is nothing more than a transfer of enthusiasm and belief. When you're in an interview you're making a sale, you are marketing yourself. What you think going into an interview makes all the difference in the world." - Elissa Shuck, LYWL EP.19

In this episode, you'll discover how to identify a high-energy experience and apply those thoughts and feelings to an interview. In addition, you learn how reframing an interview can turn your mindset around, how to gauge the interviewer's energy, and how to raise and lower your own to use it as a thermostat for the conversation.
