11 Mar 2022Love Sober Podcast- Guest- Michael Happy Without the Hooch00:57:57

This week on the podcast Mandy speaks with Michael @happywithoutthehooch

It was a real pleasure to talk to Michael and for him to share his incredible journey to sobriety. It shows us all that there is possibility and we do recover and how comedy, community and connection can provide the tools to a life without alcohol. There is talk of overdose and suicidal ideation and attempt in this conversation. So please do make sure you are in the right space to listen, it is also a conversation of hope, survival and recovery which is really inspiring.

Michael Sargood is 39 years old and from Southend-on-Sea in the UK and is over one year sober. At the depths of his alcohol addiction, he was drinking up to a litre of neat vodka per night and was diagnosed as being alcohol dependent. Despite this, he managed to hold down a good job until the last few months of his addiction. He decided to quit alcohol in March 2020 and went to live with his parents for the first three months of his recovery. He was sober seven months before relapsing in October 2020. That "one" drink lasted four months and saw him placed under the care of the local mental health team. On the 17th of February 2021, after losing over 24 hours to blackout, He went sober again. That was the last time he drank. This time round, He is trying to recover differently. Instead of just "subtracting" substances, people and places, he is focussing on adding things to his life: new friends, interests and ambitions.

He has taken up comedy and recently started performing.

He runs alcohol-free social events in his local area and is on a mission to meet IRL with other sober people he's connected with on Instagram. "Life has never been so good for me and I want to help others who are struggling with alcohol and substance abuse discover the joy of sobriety." He says.

Michael is off to Scotland with @welovelucid 20th - 23rd of Scotland - so if you're up for some laughter, connection and bagpipes don't miss out!

02 Apr 2021Love Sober Podcast Episode 124. 02.03.2100:45:41

In this episode we are looking at the Easter weekend and easing of lockdown restrictions in the UK and the attendant anxiety and social triggers we may be feeling as sober people and/or introverts. It's like we are all learning a new skill or remembering how to connect with other people not on Zoom. I mean, what lipstick are you going to wear? That red that is genius on Zoom makes me look like The Joker IRL ( Kate). In all seriousness it feels like a a big change and it is a big change so we are talking about bossing our sober tool kits with tips, tools and strategies.

We are diving into Chapter 12 in our book Love Yourself Sober to mine those treasures about bossing sober & social.

This week on the pod, Mandy interview Lois Beim and Liz Mckean from The Phoenix @riserecoverylive  Liz McKean is a Yoga Teacher and Person in Recovery.  Born and raised in Western NY, she lives in Tampa, Florida with her husband and rescue dog and cats.  After years of struggling with anxiety and drinking, she found strength and sobriety on the yoga mat, and soon after found community with The Phoenix.  In her current role of National Virtual Program Manager at The Phoenix, Liz helps bring the sober, active community to people across the country and beyond through live streaming events such as fitness, yoga, meditation, and social gatherings.  She also teaches yoga within her community, and at a local treatment center.  There is nothing she’d rather do than work for and with people in and seeking recovery.  Sharing her story and the joy of community and yoga is the honor of her life.   Lois is a yoga teacher, personal trainer and fitness instructor and has been sober for around five years. She lives in Surrey with her husband, three children and two Jack Russells. She was brought up in Belfast during the troubles and previously worked in the police. She began drinking as a teenager and used alcohol to numb difficult emotions and escape crippling shyness. She initially began exercising in order to be fit for her job, but began to notice other benefits including increased confidence and better mood. Yoga took this one step further and taught her self compassion and allowed her to connect to her body and feel at peace. She has been volunteering for The Phoenix sober community for over a year teaching yoga and meditation.   In this episode we talk about exercise, yoga and community, how together we are stronger than stigma and what the amazing people at The Phoenix do.  To find out more and join a class you can go to https:/www.thephoenix.org follow @riserecoverlive or @power_yoga_cobham Grab a cuppa and let’s chat!

In this episode we talk to the fabulous Dr Alice Kerby who is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Health Consultant, a Holistic Health Practitioner, and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner in training. She uses her decades of experience and training to focus on the stress response from an autonomic nervous system and physiological perspective.

She specialises in working with sober and sober curious women who are seeking additional tools to manage stress, increase a sense of calm, and move forward in creating their lives. This is gold to sober people to help us deal with triggers and move swiftly from fight/flight response to calm and to regulate our autonomic nervous systems so we don't hit the F it button and the bottle.

06 Mar 2020Love Sober Podcast 69 Guest: Sober Experiment 06/03/202000:53:02

This week Mandy is joined on the pod by Lisa and Alex from Sober Experiment. It was such a great chat, we discussed familys, life, drinking, trauma and the adverse childhood experiences that perhaps are behind why we numb out with alcohol and the power of really healing. We talk about their brilliant work within the workplace to invite the sober curious for a sober experiment and all the work they are doing. Including their event at Redemption on March 28th with guest speakers, Simon Chappel, Sober Dave, William Porter and Mandy https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-sober-experiment-uk-tour-london-tickets-88427939347?aff=ebdssbeac sponsored by Vibe Drinks.

Their friendship is a beautiful thing to witness, and there is nothing better than listening to people's stories, being in awe of their bravery, spirit and journey, we really enjoyed this chat and we know you will too, so grab a cuppa and let's chat. X

Learn more about Alex and Lisa on their website www.soberexperiment.co.uk The Sober Experiment was founded by Alex and Lisa, best friends for almost 30 years. They have worked together, drank together, emigrated together and after a short period of time spent on their own life journeys, have now embarked on a sober experiment together.

Despite both having successful careers and settling down to family life, both had been using alcohol as a crutch for all sorts of relatively ‘normal’ reasons, alcohol began to play too much of a part in their everyday lives. One morning, Lisa called Alex to announce she was experimenting with sobriety for 100 days.  A year later, after Lisa had decided sobriety was a permanent fixture, Alex joined her.  Together they have shared experiences beyond their wildest dreams and decided sobriety was just too good to keep to themselves.

They both realised that it wasn’t necessary to be labelled alcoholic in order to want to improve your lifestyle and become a healthier version of yourself.  Through shared and different life experiences, they realised that although on the same journey, their pasts and present situations were so different that they could touch the hearts and minds of so many different people and turn their negative past into help for others.

They agreed that change was needed and wanted to create a platform where the stigma surrounding alcohol and alcoholism could be removed.  The Sober Experiment was born and in such a short amount of time, they have been able to bring their services to help others.  As an IPHM accredited training provider, The Sober Experiment now works interactively with groups of people in the workplace to allow them to ask anything and say anything in a safe environment with no stigma attached.  Alex and Lisa ensure everyone they touch has a raised awareness surrounding the impact of alcohol on wellbeing, from CEOs to Managers to Staff to Students, and provide the tools to allow people to support others by knowing how to identify and refer concerns.

So many people use alcohol along life’s pathway.  From wetting the baby’s head, to raising a glass at a funeral but the conversation of alcohol as an addictive substance is avoided until it is too late.  Alex and Lisa want to change this and start having these conversations before a person becomes addicted. The Sober Experiment provides a safe space and support for everyone who chooses not to drink alcohol (either for social, religious, cultural or personal reasons) for people to be a part of and to talk without the fear of being labelled and encourage open and honest conversations.

In this week's podcast, Kate talks to the wonderful Veronica Valli about her new  book ‘Soberful: Uncover a sustainable, fulfilling life free of alcohol’ published by Sounds True. It's an opportunity once again to benefit from her wisdom and experience as a true pioneer of sustainable sobriety. Continuously sober since May 2nd, 2000, and with 20 years experience as a recovery coach and psychotherapist, she understands that there is no ONE path to recovery.

She helps women dig deep, embrace change, and become who they are meant to be. “I return people to themselves,” she says. Veronica has helped thousands of women not only recover from alcohol but also transform their lives.

Veronica works with women and men all over the world through her successful and innovative online recovery programs. In this episode, Kate speaks with author Penny Wincer a bout her book 'Tender - The Imperfect Art of Caring.' Penny's story of being a young carer for her mother which comes full circle to finding herself as carer for her son, who has Autism is moving and stirring and throws a light on othering in an ableist society, articulates the struggle of finding help as a carer and raises important questions about how we can support carers.

As carers we have extra weight on our shoulders and that can accelerate a problematic relationship with alcohol, as we try to cope with overwhelm, lack of support and isolation. Here we chat about the gifts and challenges of caring and how to build support and find support and why it takes a village.

09 Jul 2021Love Sober Podcast 137 One Year Pitfalls & How to Avoid Them00:46:13

Kate and Mandy get in the same room! Recording together in London, and at the request of one of our US listeners, we reflect back on our one year milestones, why we went back to drinking and discuss tips for people approaching their soberversaries, and how to stay the course and push through that year mark.

This one year soberversary time is so often laden with expectation and anxiety as well as feelings of pride and achievement. How do we navigate the transition from the first year to year two?  What should we expect of ourselves? Why is it a thing? Surely we should be bossing it by now? What was missing? Our expectations and minds can hinder more than help at this delicate time for sure.

So in this episode, we talk about things that tripped us us and what we have learned along the way in terms of stress management, support, boundaries and our on ongoing journeys in the hopes that it resonates with anyone out there feeling the wobbles.

06 Sep 2024Your Menopause Toolkit : Hormones & Alcohol with Fiona Catchpowle00:55:18

In this episode I talk to the founder of The Menopause School, Fiona Catchpowle who gives us a masterclass in understanding hormonal health & ageing, peri menopause, menopause and holistic health, HRT and alcohol plus practical ways to empower us to make choices for our health.

Fiona Catchpowle is a Menopause Doula and the Creator and Founder of The Menopause School -  a centre of excellence for holistic practitioners to become menstrual health informed.

Even with a background in Biology and Holistic Therapy, Fiona’s own experience of menopause was like hitting a brick wall. How could it be possible to reach 47 and not know about something called perimenopause? Had she missed the menopause memo?

It soon became apparent that there was no education, formal or otherwise, for menstruators of any age to learn about the menstrual health journey and how to best support themselves.

Driven to make a change in menstrual and menopause health education, Fiona built The Menopause School.

Fiona is on a mission to change the face of menopause care by creating a global collective of Menopause Doulas who will guide, nurture and support others along the menstrual health timeline from periods to perimenopause and beyond.

03 Mar 2023Love Sober Podcast Episode 190 Sober Toolkit - Hope00:16:08

In this episode I look at the subject of hope and how to practically cultivate a hope practice.  "an optimistic mindset based on the expectation of positive outcomes.'' It's one of those tools that can be a bit overlooked,  easily mistaken for a lofty virtue or a whimsical fancy or naivety but  it is in fact a badass resilience tool. In this episode I am taking the chapter from our book Love Your Sober Year and delving into hope and actionable steps to cultivate hope and why it's such an important part of the sober toolkit. As I always say, mental health tools, are life tools, are sober tools. In the words of my first and most enduring girl crush, the wonderful Kate Bush in Cloudbusting, ' Oooooh... I just know that something good is gonna happen, and just saying it could even make it happen...' YEAH BABY.

'Love Your Sober Year' is a seasonal guide to sustainable alcohol free living. It starts in Spring so it's the perfect time to grab your copy and start or continue your holistic sober journey.

And a wee favour - If you liked the book please could you leave a review on Amazon? It really helps. Thanks so much x

So grab a cuppa and let's chat.

21 May 2021Love Sober Podcast 131 Danusia Malina-Derben - School for Mothers00:57:04
Episode 131 This week Mandy has an incredible chat with Danusia Malina-Derben @school.for.mothers.podcast and author of Noise - Danusia is a mother of ten children, and still her own woman. From teen mother to tenured Organisational Behavior and Development academic, and onto award-winning, internationally published leadership expert. Danusia traded academia to head a global firm that fixes corporate boardrooms and develops top talent. She also hosts two critically acclaimed companion podcasts; School for Mothers and School for Fathers. Danusia has received praise and recognition from The Sunday Times to Metro, Psychologies to Good Housekeeping. She lives in the South Downs, UK with her family, and their mini-dachshund, Dickie. So grab a cuppa and let’s chat.   Love K & M xx   Her book NOISE: A Manifesto Modernising Motherhood - 30 March 2021 THE BOOK THAT ANSWERS: HOW CAN I BE A MOTHER AND STILL BE ME?  Part manifesto, part memoir, part guide; this book unflinchingly flips conventional thinking surrounding motherhood on its head. On the one hand, this book is about being a mother, but it's also about how, once we become mothers, we're not allowed to be ourselves. NOISE is a powerful dismantling of the barriers and central tenets that hold women back.  This manifesto was built to start a conversation; it's a call-to-arms to get ideas flowing through our communities, and an invitation to think differently about what we're repeatedly told about motherhood. An intimate, bold blend of memoir, thought-leadership and research, Danusia provocatively reframes the NOISE around motherhood and repositions mothers as the social change agents our world desperately needs. “A debrief on motherhood for today” The Telegraph "Danusia makes motherhood political - giving tangible steps to help shift our societal views on motherhood and make a change.” Eve Rodsky, author of NYT Bestseller Fair Play “It is a beautiful thing when a book about motherhood is about people; about remembering that mothers are people in their own right. I think we so often forget that. This is a soothing slap in the face reminder.” Hollie McNish, author of Nobody Told Me & Slug Triumph Press: https://www.triumphpress.co/books/p/noise Available for purchase at (amongst others): Amazon UK — Foyles

13 May 2022Love Sober Podcast Episode 176 - She Recovers & Next Steps for Kate & Mandy00:39:05

In this episode we talk about our experiences at the She Recovers Conference in Miami. The incredible speakers and the experience of being with 500 women in recovery, dancing, doing yoga, learning, swimming, chatting was an incredible experience. We met other She Recovers Coaches, old friends who have been on the pod, and made new friends. It felt like a global sisterhood moment for sure. There were so many highlights but for Kate, some of her top moments were Nadia Bolz Webber , who founded the Church for Sinners and Saints  in Detroit and for Mandy, Shari Hampton and Jennifer Pastiloff

There were so many wow and ahhh moments, dancing with Payton and yoga-ing with Taryn. Still holding on and processing and smiling.

On another note... change being part of life and necessary for growth and health, Mandy talks about her decision to step back from Love Sober & the podcast, to honour health, wellbeing, family and transitions after much deliberation. Kate will continue to run Love Sober & they remain great friends and collaborate on their coach training and their second book which is out in September.

04 Jul 2024Love Sober Podcast: Friends & Sobriety with Kate Baily & Dufflyn Lammers01:02:44

In this episode, Dufflyn and I delve into the rich and complex topic of friendships and sobriety. Whether a friendship is for 'a reason, a season or a lifetime', (thanks for this, D), human beings are naturally wired to connect with others. Navigating the adjustments to our friendships and connections when we stop drinking can be challenging. Today, we discuss how to make friends, keep friends, and how to look after ourselves and our sobriety if things go wrong with friends.

Boundaries, the importance of our connections, our attachments styles, how to let go, how to keep, new sober friends and old drinking friends and what happens if sober friends drink again and the surprising power of a frenemy... oof, it's a biggie!

19 Mar 2021Love Sober Podcast 122- Guest Ann Dowsett Johnston00:50:18

Episode 122

This week we had the great honor of talking to one of the early pioneers in the conversation about women and alcohol. Ann Dowsett Johnston she is an award-winning journalist and bestselling author, turned psychotherapist.

Winner of seven National Magazine Awards, she is also the recipient of a Southam Journalism Fellowship and the Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy. It was for the latter that she prepared a 14-part series on Women and Alcohol in the Toronto Star, looking at the closing gender gap on risky drinking. In 2013, she wrote Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol, a book named one of the top 10 of the year by the Washington Post. Part memoir, part journalistic exploration, the book exposes the “pinking” of the alcohol industry. Says Gabor Mate: “The writing is gripping and vivid, the voice personal, the research exacting, the stories revealing if sometimes heartbreaking, the conclusions essential. A triumphant life, a triumphant book.” Since the publication of Drink, she has worked hard to destigmatize mental health and addiction, earning an honorary Doctor of Laws from Queen’s University for her efforts. She is also the recipient of a Transforming Lives award from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), the American Research Society on Addiction’s Media Award, plus the T. A. Sweet Award from the Ontario Psychiatric Association for helping address stigma related to mental health and addiction. In 2017, she decided to follow her heart, applying to the Master’s of Social Work program at Smith College in Northampton, Mass. What this represents is the fulfillment of a decades-old dream: to become a psychotherapist. Writing remains a significant part of her life, and she is  hard at work on her second book. She also has recently started a writing group and workshops https://www.anndowsettjohnston.com/workshops .

In this interview Ann talks openly about her mental health and drinking. Her recovery and finding purpose in her writing to change the conversation around alcohol in society and especially how it is marketed to women. Such a great conversation, we might have been a little over excited! Grab a cuppa and let's chat. Love K & M xxx

24 Sep 2021Love Sober Podcast 148 Harrison Ward - Fell Foodie01:01:34

In this episode Mandy talks with the very inspiring Harrison Ward, also known as Fell Foodie @fellfoodie, who discovered a love of the mountains just as his life had hit rock bottom. A sufferer from crippling depression and suicidal thoughts since puberty, life spiralled out of control in early adulthood as he turned to alcohol to sedate his mind. By age 20, he was regularly consuming over 20 pints a day, was a full time smoker and had ballooned to 22 stone. A major life change in 2016, after coming to terms that he had become an alcoholic, brought him home to Cumbria. After vowing to leave booze and lethargy behind, he threw himself into a life of fitness. A close friend then introduced him to hiking the local fells. A new passion was ignited and a fresh lifestyle began that remains to this day. Harrison is now over 5 years sober and can often be found merging his lifelong passion for cooking with his contemporary appreciation for the outdoors, producing restaurant-quality dishes in remote locations. This is such a good Episode, so grab a cuppa and let’s chat.

25 Nov 2021Love Sober Podcast Episode 156 - Guest Jo Walduck00:49:14

In this episode, Mandy talks to sober shero and coach Jo Walduck. Jo Walduck (she/they) @zesobercoach @jowalduck loves long naps, white chocolate, social justice, walks on the beach and fluffy cats. Currently working remotely, she lives in Lyon, France but has grand plans to relocate to the seaside as soon as possible. Sober since October 2019, her journey to sobriety came off the back of burnout from teaching, and retraining as a life and business coach.

After taking one month off the booze to boost the launch her company, she realised the tip of the iceberg had just been scratched in terms of the benefits and lessons that can come from sustained sobriety, and since then has navigated quitting nicotine, coming out as trans, living with chronic illness, losing friends and family to isolation, illness and death, and of course, the adaptation to life in a pandemic. She works on herself and with women and queer folk as a coach, exploring the hindrances to sustained sobriety and the shadows that can appear when the sober light gets stronger.

Her support group (The Deep Duckpond) is currently only in English, but she works 1:1 with clients in English and French and hopes, *once things settle down* to be more actively involved in the alcohol free world in France, and to produce more resources and supports for members of the queer community who struggle with addictive substances and behaviour. Community, therapy, boundary work (inward and outward-facing), non-violent communication, and radical self-love and self-care (it's not all fluffy slippers) are the cornerstones of her sobriety, healing and recovery.

17 Jul 2020Love Sober Podcast 88 Mum Talk 17/07/202000:47:56

This week in the pod we talk strategies for the summer holidays, and mum guilt, and the juggle. We also talk about emotional triggers, why is it that the sun comes out and we want a drink? Why can memory triggers seem to be hit us harder even though we know that drinking is harmful? We unpick this and think of some strategies to build new memories around not drinking and use mindfulness and our senses to challenge our thinking and keep ourselves sAFe and sober. Grab a cuppa and let's chat. K & M xx

03 Jul 2020Love Sober Podcast 86 Reconnecting 03/07/2000:49:30

In this episode we discuss reconnecting with ourselves. This could be after a social time, a busy time or even if we are coming back to sobriety or indeed, getting sober for the first time. This is notoriously hard to navigate, fraught with the noise and static of our busy lives. Why do we get social hangovers, even when we don't drink? Did you know they can be triggers in themselves? So let's dissect this tricky bugger. When coming back to sober we can feel such enormous shame and blame so we discuss tools and strategies - self compassion, nervous system regulation, naming and calling those transition times, forgiveness and rest. Self-care always.

07 Feb 2020Love Sober Podcast 65 Self Love 06/02/2000:57:27
This week’s podcast we talk about Self Love. It’s not easy to deconstruct the process of where we are now and where we were. To that place of deep self loathing and crippling low self worth. To both be able to say, I love myself and I am my own best friend.   For us the catalyst is and always has been stopping drinking that fundamental decision of self love, the consistency it has brought, the self-trust and pride is for us the key to self love. We talk about how guided meditation and working with a therapist can help, letting go of Shame and watching out for proof of the things we do well.   So grab a cuppa and let’s chat.    Resources mentioned: Welford Wellbeing https://www.welfordwellbeing.com/ Calm - Self Love daily meditations.
