On July 13, 2018, Paul and his wife were vacationing in California to celebrate their 26th wedding anniversary.  Before wrapping up their trip, Paul wanted to take one last day hike through Joshua Tree National Park, hoping to get some good shots of the parks Big Horn Sheep.  After several hours had passed without Paul's return, his wife alerted the authorities and a massive search kicked off shortly after.  Join us this week as we revisit the disappearance and eventual recovery of Paul Miller in Joshua Tree National Park.  (Episode 106)

July 24th, 1989: The police in Hokkaido, Japan dispatched a helicopter to the Daisetsuzan National Park to search for two lost hikers that had been reported missing. The searchers rescued the two hikers but what brought them to their location in the first place is where the real mystery begins. On September 11, 2005, experienced outdoorsman and hunter, Tom Leonard, embarked on what was supposed to be the adventure of a lifetime. On a quiet afternoon in January 1980, veteran park ranger Paul Fugate set out on a routine patrol in Arizona's Chiricahua National Monument, promising to return shortly.  He was never seen again.  Despite extensive searches, not a single trace of him was found. On June 14th 2020, Erika Llyod set off on a pandemic road trip to Joshua Tree National Park, where she planned to camp.  After she failed to check in with family for several days, she was declared missing on June 17th.  Adding to the mystery, her vandalized car was found a day earlier by law enforcement on a highway near the park.  Over the next several months, friends, family, and law enforcement continued searching for Erika with no luck.  Strangely, during this search a shocking discovery was made relating to another missing persons case in the area.  What happened to Erika and her car?  Are the two cases related to each other?  Join us this week as we try to piece together what happened to Erika Lloyd.

August 1, 2018, 28 year old Samantha Sayers set off on a solo hike of Vesper Peak in the remote North Cascades wilderness of Washington State.  As an experienced hiker who’s traversed this route multiple times, it should have been a routine day hike.  However, Sam was never heard from or seen again.  Sam's disappearance would kick off one of the largest search and rescue operations in state history that ultimately failed to uncover any clues about what happened.  Join us this week as we investigate the disappearance of Samantha Sayers.  (Episode 47)

A Note about this episode- For our regular listeners, this episode is a departure from the normal cases we cover.  A lawyer with sources close to the subject of this episode contacted us about the death of a woman named Gwen Hasselquist.  While her obituary lists the cause of death as Covid-19, his sources are convinced foul play is involved.  The following episode is our fact finding, in person interview, with the lawyer who has taken a personal interest in investigating this case.  Since recording this interview, we have filed several FOIA requests with local law enforcement, seeking out any additional information on what might have happened to Gwen.  If or when we discover significant additional information about Gwen, we will release a follow up episode to discuss the findings.  There are also some quotes containing profanity so parental discretion is advised.   March 2020, Gig Harbor Washington, Gwen Hasselquist is diagnosed with COVID 19, and goes missing.  Shortly after an obituary is posted in the local paper indicating that she passed away from the illness.  However, there are conflicting statements about the actual cause of her death.  Join us this week as we investigate the death of Gwen Hasselquest.

Sept 13th, 1990 - Biff and Cindi Bowen were at the halfway point of their 2,144 mile hike down the Appalachian Trail, when the couple stopped for supplies in Duncannon, Pennsylvania, before their trek up nearby Cove Mountain.  The two planned to spend the night in a three-sided log shelter along the trail.  As the couple hiked down an incline behind the shelter, Biff sensed that “Something was wrong,”.  He was so overcome with an uneasy sense of dread that he positioned his hiking pole as a weapon before walking around the cabins open side.  On the open side of the cabin, the couple found supplies frantically scattered around the murdered bodies of two hikers. The Bowens walked onto the scene of a grisly double murder.  The victims, two experienced hikers—Molly LaRue, 25, of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and her boyfriend, Geoffrey Hood, 26, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee.  Hood had been shot multiple times with a .22 caliber revolver.  LaRue had been tied up, tortured, raped and stabbed eight times in the neck and upper back.  Join us this week as we investigate the case of Hood and LaRue. October 2018 - Connie Johnson, a former U.S. Forest Service wilderness ranger in Idaho, had the experience and training to navigate the backcountry solo and even survive if needed. After retiring from the Forest Service, Connie worked as a camp cook for Richie Outfitters in the area around Fog Mountain.  On October 2nd, 2018 a hunting party Connie was cooking for set out on their hunt in the early morning. May 1983, 54-year-old Jessie Hoover set off on a trip from her home in Texas, traveling to Maine, where she planned to hike a remote section of the Appalachian Trail called the 100 Mile Wilderness.  After failing to check in for almost two months, her family notified the authorities who spent weeks looking for her. July 19th, 1991, 13 year old Jared Negrete was on an overnight backpacking trip with the Boy Scouts in the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California.  On a hike to the summit of Mt. San Gorgonio, Jared fell behind the group and was asked to stay behind and wait.  The group planned to get Jared on the way down but Jared was gone.  The only item recovered during the search was a disposable camera with an eerie partial selfie of Jared’s face at night.    

To help describe the search effort, we sat down with Rick Maschek, a SAR member formerly with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Desert Rescue Squad, who spent over a week searching for Jared in 1991.  Join us this week as we try to piece together what happened to Jared Negrete.

On October 19, 2020, Fern Baird, a seasoned hiker exploring Idaho briefly, embarked on a day hike in the Prairie Creek region within Sawtooth National Forest. Signing the trail log with her name and the phrase 'To the lake and back,' Fern commenced her trek. Unfortunately, after several days passed without her return to the hotel, she was declared missing, initiating a search. May 6th, 2006, a couple hiking in the San Jacinto Mountains, were navigating off trail on what was supposed to be a short 2-hour hike.  After making several decisions in an attempt to find the trail, they realized they were in serious trouble.  Amazingly, several days into their ordeal, they found an abandoned campsite of a man who went missing a year earlier.  Join us this week as we follow the amazing survival story of Brandon Day & Gina Allen and uncover the mystery of the abandoned campsite they found.  (Episode 75)

In the summer of 1988, Keith Reinhard, a Chicago sports reporter and an aspiring novelist moved to Silver Plume Colorado, a small mountain town in the Colorado Rockies.  He opened a small antique store and hoped the slower pace of life would help with his novel.  Soon after moving in, Keith learned of the strange disappearance of Tom Young, who had previously leased Keith's shop and went missing almost exactly a year earlier.  Keith took interest in the disappearance of Tom and decided his book would be based on him.  On August 7th, 1988, Keith set out to summit nearby Pendleton Mountain to help with writers block.  Keith didn't return from his hike and was never seen again.  Join us this week as we investigate the disappearance of Keith Reinhard.  (Episode 43)

On the morning of August 23, 2008, a local man goes for an ATV ride on his property in Happy Valley, Tennessee, located on the border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  When he failed to contact his family, the local authorities were notified, and a search kicked off.  Days later, close to the National Park border, his abandoned ATV was found under strange circumstances.  Join us this week as we investigate the puzzling disappearance of Mike Hearon.  (Episode 89)

February 26th, 2015; A young man from the Big Island of Hawaii was on Oahu visiting his grandmother.  He planned to hike the Haiku Stairs, also known as the Stairway to Heaven.  His grandmother warned him it was illegal to hike the stairs and he could be arrested.  Not heeding her warnings, he set off on the hike that morning.  When he didn't return home, he was reported missing, and the search began.  Join us this week as we investigate the disappearance of Daylenn Pua.  (Episode 95)

Notes & Corrections: - Early in the episode, Joe states Moke was visiting his grandmother on the Big Island.  Mike corrects Joe around timestamp 5:15, stating that Moke was from the Big Island and visiting his grandmother on Oahu.   - There were a lot of discrepancies in our research on the age of Moke and the date he went missing.  We discuss this during the episode, and based on evidence believe he started his hike on the 26th, not the 27th, which is listed in many news reports on this case.

The Stanislaus National Forest is located in Tuolumne County California, near the northwestern part of Yosemite National Park. The forest is home to hundreds of miles of streams, rivers, and over a thousand miles of trails.  Yet, just beyond the forests beauty lies a dark and mysterious past.  From 2005 to 2016, three individuals have gone missing, without a trace, at the exact same location; Donnell Vista Point.  Join us this week as we investigate the Donnell Vista Point Disappearances.  (Episode 45)

Correction 1- During the location profile we correctly listed out the wildlife in this area of California.  However, we misspoke further in the episode in regards to Grizzlies in California.  One of the joys of doing the show live is you can't edit or re-record spots you mess up.  One of us asked if there were Grizzlies in this area and the other host replied no but stated there are Grizzlies in other parts of California.  This is incorrect.  There are no Grizzlies in California and there haven't been for decades.  Thank you to our listeners for pointing this out.

July 2nd, 2020 - Hikers in the Sierra National Forest discovered an abandoned campsite, with gear strewn about, near Johnson Meadows.  Days later, hikers near that area reported seeing a bruised & barefoot woman on the trail, who refused help when offered.  Over a month after the initial campsite was discovered, the same woman was seen by hunters off a remote road in the forest.  Join us this week as we investigate the bizarre disappearance of Sandra Johnsen-Hughes.  (Episode 74)

October 2nd, 1999, 3-year-old Jaryd Atadero, his 6-year-old sister Jocelyn, and 11 other adults were hiking The Big South Trail near Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.  While hiking, Jaryd ran ahead, no more than 100 feet and stopped to talk with some fisherman. After his brief time, Jaryd continued down the trail ahead of the group. This would be the last time anyone saw Jaryd.  In the following days, a massive Search and Rescue operation failed to turn up any evidence of Jaryd. June 8th 2021- A Jackson Wyoming resident, bartender, and local snowboard instructor set out for a solo hike in Grand Teton National Park with limited gear on a moderate 8-mile trail.  Witnesses reported seeing him around mid-afternoon. This is the last time he would be seen. Join us this week as we investigate the disappearance of Cian McLaughlin.  

Correction - Our comment about bears in the park was misleading when we said there are Grizzly's and brown bears in Grand Teton National Park.  While Grizzly's are technically brown bears, not all brown bears are Grizzly's.  Generally, brown bears are considered to be those of the species that have access to coastal food resources.  Grizzly's live further inland and typically don't have access to marine-derived food.

September 24th 2010, 39 year old Todd Hofflander joined some friends on a multi day hunting trip in the remote Idaho wilderness area called Hells Canyon.  As an experienced hiker, Todd was well equipped to spend multiple days in the backcountry and had been on trips like this before.  On the 4th day of the trip, Todd experienced knee pain and decided to split from the group.  This would be the last time anyone would see Todd until his remains were discovered a decade later.  Join us this week as we discuss the disappearance of Todd Hofflander.

August 21st 2022, an experienced climber, who survived an avalanche in 2005 on Mt. Everest, set out to summit Split Mountain in California.  He was accompanied by two friends he had recently met on a social media hiking group.  Near the summit, Than got separated from his group and was never seen again.  Join us this week as we investigate the disappearance of Quang Than.   (Episode 70)

On April 11, 2019, 68 year old Kat Hammontre went on a short day hike with family, friends, and her German Shepherd Tootsie in Diablo Canyon, located in San Pedro Martir National Park.  After less than a mile in, Kat sits down due to issues with her foot, while the rest of the group continued on.  When the hiking party returned, less than 90 minutes later, Kat and her dog were gone.  Join us this week as we investigate the disappearance of Kat Hammontre.  (Episode 44)

The group was planning a week-long hunt in the Campfire Lake area of the Crazy Mountains Range. October 20th, 2018; a man goes scouting for a hunting location in the remote wilderness of Wyoming.  While driving to the destination, his pickup truck gets stuck in a large rut, north of the Pine Mountain Area.  Footprints leading away from the truck, eventually disappearing into the thick vegetation, are the only clues searches found.  Join us this week as we investigate the mysterious disappearance of Terry Meador.

In Episode 50, we learned about a suspicious death, a husband who remarried within months, who then fled the country.  With very little coverage of the death, and even less information about the events leading up to her death, we submitted FOIA requests to fill in the gaps.  Recently, one of our FOIA requests was completed and a 21-page police report on Gwen's death was sent to us.   Join us this week as we continue to investigate the death of Gwen Hasselquist.

June 14th, 1969.  A young boy sets off on a camping trip with family in the Great Smoky Mountains.  On the second day, a group of kids, including the young boy, decided to play a prank on the adults by hiding in the woods next to the campground.  After less than five minutes, the group of kids returned but the boy was nowhere to be found.  In the following weeks, the largest search and rescue operation in NPS history (to this day) failed to find any clues as to what happened.  Join us this week as investigate the puzzling disappearance of Dennis Martin.  (Episode 71)

November 23, 1991, a 17 year old went elk hunting with some friends in the remote Oregon Wilderness.  When he failed to meet back up at the car that evening, his friends notified the authorities and the biggest search in Oregon’s history kicked off.  The case went cold for over a year until a grizzly discovery was made. On June 23rd, 2021, a geologist working on a remote job site in the Sonoran Desert, west of Phoenix Arizona, started behaving strangely shortly after arriving for the day.  His coworker noticed him looking off into the desert with a blank stare before getting into his car and driving off, never to be seen again.  Join us this week as we investigate the bizarre disappearance of Daniel Robinson and the puzzling discovery a month later that leaves more questions than answers.  (Episode 76)

CORRECTION ON SNAKE BITES:  Around the 21:42 mark we discussed what to do if you get bit by a rattlesnake.  After explaining that you should seek immediate medical attention, we also mentioned the use of a tourniquet and mechanical suction if you can't get to a hospital.  Many of our amazing listeners have called the show or sent us emails correcting us on this.  According to the Wilderness Medical Society Practice Guidelines, both methods of treating snake bites are not recommended.  You can learn more about the proper ways to treat snake bites here.

June 2023, a Belgian tourist living in Tasmania for 6 months planned to take in the local nature scene by hiking the Philosopher Falls Walking Trail. It's an easy, well-marked trail that should only take 50, so she packed light. When family and friends could not reach her, they notified local authorities to report her missing.
