Stacey Montgomery began her education studying medicine due to an early inspiration as a child.  However; she realized fairly soon it was not  her cup of tea and shifted to the law, starting her professional career in the corporate world.  Stacey has always loved drawing and writing but never believed it was something that could blossom into a successful living.  But when she was laid off, she took the opportunity to follow her passion and speed down that creative track.

Stacey M. Design celebrates children and has been on a mission to build their self-confidence. She believes there is something special in each child and is determined to help them tap into their own uniqueness and greatness.  She calls it their "Super Power."

Stacey's son, Isaiah has been one of her biggest inspirations. She witnessed his personal struggles in school. Feeling helpless, sad and frustrated, Stacey realized that he and many other children needed guidance in a way that would make them feel more confident and that they matter.  As a writer and illustrator Stacey developed guided journals for social emotional learning (SEL) programs for use in elementary schools and youth groups. Using her guided journals in school settings, a group, or at home, encourages productive conversations and develop their self-esteem.

19 Apr 2023Finding Your Passion! Talking with Victoria Minette - Full Episode00:37:28

Victoria has been a long-time neighbor and friend. She has a master’s in social work and has spent her entire career in the healthcare field. She has the gift of "Empathy" and that explains, to me, why she was passionate about her career and has the same passion in retirement.

Over the past few years I was dealing with elderly family members, including my mother, that required additional attention and care. Navigating through our massive health care system can be overwhelming and Victoria was instrumental in successfully guiding me through the many processes.

As you listen to our conversation I ask you to consider the following:

It is ok and good to ask for help
Asking for help is a sign of strength and courage. It shows that you are willing to learn and grow, and that you value the input and knowledge of others. Don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

Empathy and why it matters
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It matters because it allows us to connect with others on a deeper level, build stronger relationships, and create a more compassionate world. It also helps us to be better communicators and problem-solvers, as we are able to see things from different perspectives.

Acknowledging Your Expertise/And get paid!
If you've got a side gig or diving into your passion, it is important to recognize the value of your expertise and set fair rates for your services. It's okay to ask for payment for your work, as it reflects the time, effort, and knowledge you are bringing to the table. Remember to communicate your rates clearly and confidently to potential clients.

This is part two of my interview with Beth Tomas.

We start the conversation with her breast cancer diagnosis as Beth owns her feelings of anger, fear, and frustration.

Despite recently losing her husband and her brother, Beth kept her annual breast exam appointment.

Beth; you could not have provided a better example of self-care! What a reminder for all of us to understand the importance of regular exams. Take yourself and take a friend with you to an appointment. No; it's not a party but it's giving you some self-care loving!

05 Apr 2023If You Stay Ready; You Don't Have To Get Ready00:10:08

In this episode April starts getting into some of the issues she began dealing with after losing her job. Here are some of her own go to quotes;

  • "You are worth caring about!  It may be a new message but it is surely the truth. That voice that easily says "fool". It's familiar. But it's not the truth. It sounds right because what else did you know? Revel in this new message!"
  • "Some of us were taught that others come first. That we do not matter. And we end up being caregivers for those you choose not to live fully. The truth is we don’t owe anyone else our life. Do not feel guilty for choosing you."
  • "When you spend time trying to please others you lose who you are and lose sight of your own needs."
  •  "There's nothing to lose and everything to gain when you put it all out there."

28 Apr 2023Therapy Scare-apy! - Teaser - The Full Episode Airs Wednesday May 3rd00:00:39

Hi mid-bloomers and friends! Putting out a little teaser today about therapy. After finding and working with a well suited therapist, it can be life changing. It was painful and is painful when touching on experiences that you never really worked through. Or, are just now rearing their ugly head. I found the quality of my life and my relationships are so much better but as we know the journey never ends. Many relationships ended because my personal vibration had changed for the better.

Just as finding the right physician is important to your physical health, your emotional and mental health demand expert care to appropriately assess your needs. My focus over the next few weeks will spotlight the good, the bad, and the ugly I experienced and experience in therapy.  Seeking therapy is a very individual decision in which you may find yourself vulnerable. Trust is the forefront for positive and effective treatment.

Therapy can be hard work depending upon what your needs are and what you are willing to put into it. I'll be sharing recommendations on how to find the right
therapist on my full podcast episode airing Wednesday May 3rd and in later episodes.

TRANSCRIPT
...So I went to this new outpatient program at a medical center in DC. My therapist at the time initially recommended I enter their in patient program. I bristled at that. One flew over the cuckoo's nest? Oh no! And I couldn't leave my precious kitties. They've kept me sane and don't judge me. So then she suggested an outpatient program, weekly along with weekly individual therapy sessions...

03 May 2023Therapy Scare-apy!00:11:23

"In order to grow we must reveal our truth and stand in it. I am brave. And I love myself for where I was and where I am."

Just as finding the right physician is important to your physical health, you should demand the same care and attention for your emotional and mental health. My focus over the next few weeks will spotlight the good, the bad, and the ugly I experienced and experience in therapy.  Seeking therapy is a very individual decision in which you may find yourself vulnerable. Therapy can be hard work depending upon what your needs are and what you are willing to put into it. I'll be sharing recommendations on how to find the right therapist over the next few episodes.

TIP #1 FOR FINDING THE RIGHT THERAPIST
Ask for recommendations from trusted sources such as friends, family, or your primary care physician.

17 May 2023So What Had Happened Was...!00:11:22

In this episode I continue along my therapy journey. I enter into a very unhealthy relationship and seek guidance from a therapist that I thought could help me navigate through this relationship.

  • My thoughts about finding the right therapist are my personal point of view and not to be considered as advice from a professional.

#2 Tip For Finding The Right Therapist
Look for a therapist who specializes in the type of therapy that you may require.
It may be something general that may not require a specialist like struggling with  depression because of something at work.  It's important to be honest about your state of mind and what your concerns are. It's okay to ask questions as that is your right.  Would you prefer a man or a woman?  As I always say check with your general practitioner for guidance.

14 Jun 2023Joanne Greene; How To Emerge From Your Lowest Points Stronger And Happier00:42:44

Hello my Mid-Bloomers!

I had the privilege of interviewing Joanne Greene, my guest for today's episode.
Joanne is a Writer, Podcaster, Humorist, and Memoirist.

After surviving a life altering accident in 2012, Joanne Greene had to let go of controlling everything in her life, honor the still moments,  and allow herself to crack, finding beauty and possibility in her fragility.

Raised just outside of Boston, Joanne moved to the San Francisco Bay Area post college where she hosted and produced award winning radio programs for decades.

Currently, she co-hosts the podcast “All the F Words” with Gabi Moskowitz, exploring issues that start with the letter F.  "In This Story…with Joanne Greene” is her solo podcast in which her micro-essays are set to customized music.

By Accident: A Memoir of Letting Go, Joanne’s debut book, will be published on June 20th by She Writes Press. She lives in Marin County, California with her husband and creative partner since 1980, and their damn near perfect golden doodle. Both sons and two grandchildren are thriving in L.A.

31 May 2023Are All Feelings Present And Accounted For?00:09:58

Hello mid-bloomers and friends!
So; are all feelings present and accounted for? I think it's a good question and I ask this of myself almost every day. Do I stay in the moment? Can I respond in real time? Which brings me to another question. Were we allowed to have all of our feelings?
I am finding through my podcast that there are moments or relationships that I'm continuing to heal from. As I talk about them I start to really feel them and embrace them.

My thoughts about finding the right therapist are my personal point of view and not to be considered as advice from a professional.

#3 Tip For Finding The Right Therapist
Check the therapist’s credentials and experience to ensure they are licensed, have a good track record, and are up to date with any required continuing education. As I always say; check with your general practitioner for guidance.

07 Jun 2023We'reeee......Off To See The Therapist!00:10:32

Hi My Mid-bloomers!  What's going on?  Are you being kind to yourself?
In this episode I share my first experience working with a therapist and what brought me to the point where I needed to seek help.

My thoughts about finding the right therapist are my personal point of view and not to be considered as advice from a professional.

#4 Tip For Finding The Right Therapist
Find out if they take insurance or, if you even want to use your insurance. What can you afford to pay and is it within your financial range. Confirm how you want to communicate; in person, on the phone, via zoom.  If you're going to spend the money then you want to make sure that this person is there to help you. They should define what they can offer you and how they can assist you based upon their expertise.  They should ask you what are your areas of concern and what you want to accomplish as they work with you.  As I always say; check with your general practitioner for guidance.

This podcast has been one of my dreams and I did it! I knew nothing about podcasting but I have always loved storytelling. I have always wanted to share my journey to help heal myself and others. I know, for me, all of this is in co-creation with God. We all have our own journey and no one can tell you how to travel and live it.

Today's episode focuses on why I wanted to start a podcast and become a storyteller. I also share self-care when it comes to how you choose to live your life.

Next week is Episode 24, my last episode for Season One. This 24th episode is all about friendship; the good, the bad, and, the not too bad. Season Two will begin in September and there will be bonus and teaser episodes this summer.

Below is some self-care advice;

  • Give yourself permission to dream. Think about the things you are passionate about, and imagine how they could become a part of your life.
  • Don’t try to do everything at once. Set realistic goals and take one step at a time towards achieving them.
  • Connect with like minded people who are already living their truth or on their way. Together you will help raise each other's vibration.
  • Just do it! Fear will always be around you just push past it, tears and all. Once you have an idea, take action. Take classes, attend seminars, and find mentors who can help you along the way.
  • Celebrate your successes. Every step forward is a success and should be celebrated.

Blessings to everyone. April

28 Jun 2023You've Got A Friend00:42:20

Hey Mid-Bloomers!
This is my 24th and last episode of the first season of my podcast!
Season One is in the books!
I am still overwhelmed by the support that you've been giving me. It is really just amazing.
So let's get into  our last topic for Season One. Something we often overlook-friendships. They're not just nice-to-have; they're essential for a fulfilling life. Here are three key reasons why adult friendships matter:

  1. Support System: Friends are there to cheer us on and lend a shoulder to cry on. We're not meant to face life's challenges alone.
  2. Widening our World : Friends teach us how to navigate situations and break out of our comfort zones. They help us  to grow and be curious about our differences.
  3. Health Benefits: Strong friendships lead to longer, healthier lives. Spending time with friends improves our well-being and encourages healthier habits.

So, let's make time for friendships and nurture these precious connections. They bring joy, support, and a whole lot of fun to our lives. Cheers to the power of adult friendships!

Goodbye for now my Mid-Bloomers! Season Two begins in September. But there will be some bonus episodes and teasers during the summer break.
Please share my podcast with your friends with people you think that will enjoy it.
If there are episodes you've missed go back and start listening!
I care about you and I hope you do too!
Have a beautiful summer everyone and please stay in touch.  April

16 Aug 2023Bonus Episode - Excerpt From My Memoir00:04:34

Hello Mid-Bloomers!  Hope all is well with you as we get closer to the end of summer.

Many of you are aware of my love for storytelling and my deep curiosity about other people's journeys and coping mechanisms.  This is what inspired me to launch my own podcast, "Living In Mid-Bloom." I use this platform to delve into the details of everyday life and inform universal truths in everyone's journey, including my own.

Well, I have a special surprise for you. For the first time I'm sharing an excerpt from my yet to be titled memoir! Oops; I guess I gave away the surprise in the title of this episode!  Anyhoo, there are a myriad of ways of storytelling. My memoir is another way for me to express who I am and continue to share my personal journey of discovering the great love of my life; myself.

How are you sharing your story? How does your journey connect with where you are now or where you want to be? Will you allow yourself to move forward even while fear  has a tight grip on you? Fear will always be there. It's about going through it.

We want to hear from you! Send us a text and share your thoughts.

13 Sep 2023Old Trauma/New Trauma - Teaser - Full Episode airs Wednesday, Sept. 20th00:05:05

People often struggle with self-esteem, self-care, and believing in themselves.  Childhood trauma, which I experienced, can have a profound and lasting impact  throughout a person's life. Trauma experienced during childhood can lower self-esteem with feelings of unworthiness, guilt, or shame.  There are voices that whisper in your ear from your past playing old and negative self-perceptions which can persist into adulthood, making it challenging to believe in yourself and prioritize self-care. Additionally, childhood trauma can disrupt healthy tools that were developed, making it difficult for individuals to engage in self-care effectively.

My recent health scare literally brought me to my knees. And every coping mechanism I had learned over the years was, temporarily, thrown out the window.

Healing from past trauma is a complex journey that often involves therapy and support to rebuild self-esteem and develop the belief in one's worth and the ability to care for oneself.  It is hard work, but, it can be done.

Blessings everyone.

20 Sep 2023New Trauma/TIA - Old Trauma/Resurfaced - In Case Of Emergency00:44:40

Recently, I had a life-altering experience when I suffered a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack). My heartfelt gratitude goes to the swift response of the medical professionals who took me to the hospital by ambulance, the doctors and nurses in the ER, and once in my room, the doctors, nurses, and medical techs that took good care of me. During that time, I experienced high blood pressure, numbness on my left side, and garbled speech. Fortunately, these symptoms lasted no more than three hours.

A Crucial Lesson: This experience served as a stark reminder of how important it is to prioritize our health, especially as we navigate the middle-age years. It's easy to get caught up in the demands of daily life, but our well-being should always come first.

Important Steps: Taking prescribed medications, maintaining a balanced diet, and engaging in regular exercise are essential components of a healthy lifestyle. It's a combination that not only supports our physical health but also strengthens our mental and emotional resilience.

Community of Support: I'm grateful for the incredible support from friends and family during this time. It reinforces the importance of a strong support network as we journey through our lives.

A Gentle Reminder: In these moments, it's crucial to be kind to yourself. Recognize that healing is a journey, and it's okay to have setbacks. Seek support, whether from friends, family, or professionals, and remember that self-compassion is an essential part of the healing process.

Let's Prioritize Our Health Together: I'm sharing this personal experience to encourage all of us in the middle-age bracket to take our health seriously. Let's motivate each other to make positive choices that ensure a healthier, happier, and more fulfilling life.

Important Takeaways: Having a contingency plan in place is crucial. I've started compiling a list of emergency contacts, including trusted neighbors and friends, and sharing my house keys with a close friend who can assist in unforeseen situations. This simple yet thoughtful step can provide peace of mind and ensure the well-being of my  kitties; Hoss and Allie.

18 Oct 2023#PIZZAISMYWEAKNESS!00:12:29

Hey Mid-Bloomers!  In this episode I share how I'm feeling sooooo much better! I chose ME and my health has become a priority. I know that having my TIA (transient ischemic attack) was instrumental in this decision. I would still be eating crap, crossing my fingers and hedging my bets with God. So he gave me a little wake up call. I'm awake!!

01 Nov 2023Transcending Narcissistic And Emotional Abuse w/Petra van Deijl - Part One00:32:04

Welcome Mid-Bloomers to Season Two!

My special guest for the first two episodes is Petra van Deijl. Petra  is an International Certified Life Coach & Breath Work Practitioner, and,  works with clients from all over the world. Petra specializes in addressing narcissistic and emotional abuse within seemingly loving relationships. Petra  and I both openly share our personal experiences with narcissists.  How they impacted our lives but ultimately we took back control and found ourselves again.

Wise Words From Petra van Deijl;

What Is A Narcissist?
Narcissism is a personality disorder. The narcissist is very much aware of the abuse they inflict on you. Often times we (mistakingly) think that a Narcissist is very confident but they are in fact plagued by very low self esteem. To compensate this void feeling they will seduce and consequently destroy their targets by way of manipulation, intimidation, projection, gaslighting and the silent treatment.

Do you struggle with feeling invisible or unheard? You need to know you are enough!
Do people tend to suck the energy out of you, misuse your financial or emotional resources, or take you for granted?

You are not alone in this. Being a kind and loving human being does not equal being used as a doormat. In childhood you have been conditioned to put the needs of others before your own, this has become a part of your emotional make up. This is your belief system. One of the great things about being capable of introspection is that it allows you to uncover your childhood wounds, heal them and in doing so you create a new identity for yourself.

08 Nov 2023Transcending Narcissistic And Emotional Abuse w/Petra van Deijl - Part Two00:22:54

Hello Mid-Bloomers! Sooo grateful you're back to hear the rest of my interview with Petra.  She is such a naturally warm and empathetic soul.  She encourages everyone to tap into their own personal power.

In this episode we talk about the breath work she does and how trauma can affect your physical and mental health.

"When we coordinate our senses,  an amazing shift happens. Our breath is our life force and when we use the breath in an empowering way, we are able to expand our consciousness.

We all have stuff that we (unconsciously) hold within our cells. Even though you have cognitively worked through trauma, your body may still be holding feelings of anger, sadness, regret, shame, guilt and fear."   -  Petra van Deijl

15 Nov 2023Defying The Odds w/Michelle Hill - Part One00:23:39

Hi Mid-Bloomers!   On today's episode, we have a remarkable guest, Michelle Hill, who is the embodiment of resilience and creativity. Michelle's journey through life has been nothing short of extraordinary. Born into what appeared to be a typical family, she faced challenges that would shape her into the person she is today.

Early Life and Challenges:

Michelle's childhood might have seemed ordinary on the surface, but a strained relationship with her mother became a defining chapter of her life. It was during these moments of introspection that she discovered her passion for writing.

As a child seeking refuge Michelle began to nurture her creative soul. Alone with her thoughts, she allowed her imagination to flourish and her words to take flight on the pages of her notebooks. Little did she know that these early experiences with writing would become the foundation for her future success.

The Birth of Winning Proof:

Fast forward to the present day, and Michelle Hill is the founder of Winning Proof, a company dedicated to creating enduring legacies for sports and business professionals. Her mission is to empower individuals to share their compelling stories and invaluable leadership lessons. Michelle understands the power of storytelling in today's global marketplace and ensures that her clients remain prominently visible.

29 Nov 2023Defying The Odds w/Michelle Hill - Part Two00:28:47

Hi Mid-Bloomers! Thanks for joining me for part two of my interview with Michelle Hill.

I am super excited to report that her new book, The Heart Swindler – Reclaim Your Heart and Stop Falling for Liars, Losers, and Lunatics highlights was released November 16th.  Michelle shares stories of women who are survivors of romance scams with these self-important and non-empathic individuals.

Today Michelle and I discuss her experiences with these a--holes (pardon my French!) and the havoc created in her life. Michelle has the courage to share, without shame, not seeing who these people really were. I love the strength and resilience she has to speak in her truth, and, to help others who may fall for these manipulative ploys of entrapment.

We touch on what's currently going on with her publishing company and her favorite part of the process.

We also talk about the two children’s books co-authored with her cousin, Joy VanDertuin: multiple award-winning Gizelle’s Silly Soggy Day and Gizelle’s Whimsical Wintery Day.

Reach out to Michelle and check out her books;

22 Nov 2023Happy Thanksgiving Gobble Gobble!00:20:52

Hello Mid-Bloomers!  On this episode I asked a few friends about their thoughts on Thanksgiving and I share when I was a Hindu one Thanksgiving, i.e. "not eating meat."
I know, right!?

This is my favorite time of the year.  There's a chill in the air, breezy with colorful leaves twirling around. Remember Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving with toast and jelly beans?  I watch it every year and it never gets old. My mom used to cook up a storm with homemade dressing made with stale bread, cornbread, juices from the turkey, spices like thyme, basil, and sage. Yum! And she made all of her desserts from scratch including the crust; sweet potato pies, apple pies, cookies and pound cake! There were so many years when the family came to our house and mom made enough so everybody could take leftovers home. After dinner we would pass around a microphone and everyone would say what they were thankful for.

I have a lot to be thankful for this year. I'm grateful my TIA was not a full on stroke. And it gave me a chance to make major changes in my life without losing any physical or mental functions.  My heartfelt gratitude goes to the swift response of the medical professionals who took me to the hospital by ambulance, the doctors and nurses in the ER, and once in my room, the doctors, nurses, and medical techs that took good care of me.

I'm grateful for the friendship of my neighbors Gregory and Victoria for their support, and taking care of my home and my kitties, and, my spiritual coach who has guided me on a path of self-discovery and self-love.  And friends that I'm so grateful to have in my life.

Sending blessings to everyone this Thanksgiving. May you give yourself the love you deserve and the time to reflect on what you are thankful for this year.

13 Dec 2023Healing Childhood Trauma w/Beth Tyson Part Two00:26:33

Hi Mid-Bloomers! Thanks for joining me for part two of my interview with Beth Tyson.
Beth and I continue our conversation beginning with therapy; finding a therapist and determining, among many factors, if they are properly licensed. We also discuss;

  • An amazing organization called Connect Our Kids.
  • Children aging out of the foster care system.
  •  Her children's book A Grandfamily for Sullivan. It is a tender-hearted story about a child’s experience as he travels through the grief and trauma of being separated from his parents and building a new life. It is a realistic, yet hopeful story about the power of courage, compassion, and unconditional love.
  • Beth's work as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer.

"I am a mom to one little girl who lights up my world, and also has big, scary feelings. As her mom, I makes mistakes, sometimes yell, and I’m always more anxious than is necessary. To cope with this, I go to therapy, attend workshops, and  engage in self-care  just like I recommend to others. I am constantly growing and adapting from a deep desire to pass on tools that will increase children’s wellbeing for generations to come. Let’s do this work together."  - Beth Tyson

10 Apr 2024The Power of Memoir Writing00:49:36

A heartfelt conversation with award winning author, Linda Joy Myers.

Linda Joy Myers has always been haunted by the power of the past to affect people in the stream of time. She learned about World War II through her grandmother, a passionate Anglophile who would rhapsodize about the unfairness of war. Together they watched stark black and white documentaries about the war when Linda Joy was thirteen, and later this led to a passion about history which she integrated into her own struggles with intergenerational trauma and her work as a therapist and a writer.

As founder of the National Association of Memoir Writers, Linda Joy is the author of four books on memoir writing. The Power of Memoir and Journey of Memoir help writers find their way to their healing stories. Her two memoirs Don’t Call Me Mother, and Song of the Plains have won the Bay Area Publishing Association Gold Medal award and the 2018 Next Generation Indie Book awards.

Linda's perspective as a therapist, for over 40 years, added another layer of depth to our conversation. She  expressed how writing can serve as a therapeutic exercise, and a pathway to self-discovery and healing. Her encouragement for others to write their stories, regardless of publication intentions, emphasizes the profound value of storytelling for personal growth. I'm finding in sharing my personal story in my solo podcast episodes has at times, been painful as I touch on wounds that I believed from which I was fully healed. This  subject actually came up during our conversation.

Linda  left me inspired and deeply appreciative of the transformative power of writing. Her wisdom and encouragement will stay with me as I continue on my own journey of self-expression and exploration through my podcast and writing.

All of Linda's published works and the link to her SubStack account can be found on her website;

17 Apr 2024Unstoppable Jen: A Story of Resilience00:44:17

Meet Jen Hall, Co-Founder of Ambition to Success.  We discussed her time in the military (training to be an air traffic controller), her painful spinal disease, and becoming a successful entrepreneur. We touched on topics such as her addiction to pain medication, and experiencing discrimination as a woman in the military as well in the  health care system.

Jen shared her heartfelt connection to WESOS (Women's Entrepreneur Secrets of Success). We emphasized the importance of supporting and listening to each other's experiences as women. Jen's journey speaks volumes about resilience.  And through it all, her determination and strength shine, inspiring others to push through adversity with unwavering courage.

Jen has one husband, three children, two dogs, and two birds. This is a family that  supports each other, and has fun together. Though I think the birds are being upstaged by the 60 pound puppies.

Jen, along with her partner Anna Paszkiet, co-founded Ambition to Success, a one of a kind group coaching program that includes a monthly entrepreneur box delivered to your door. Join Jen and Anna in this program that includes a community of entrepreneurs as they give you the tools and training to grow your business to the next level.

26 Apr 2024Black Woman Searching...Part One00:19:26

Sharing some of my past experiences in dating. I talk about how I used external validation to boost my self-esteem and the profound impact that medication and therapy had on my mental health journey. Looking back, I realize now how I lacked self-awareness during that time.  Through it all, I'm reminded how my curiosity and questioning  myself are key in my personal growth. So, join me as I dive into these topics with openness, hoping to inspire and connect with each of you on your own journeys.

TAKE AWAYS

  1. Improved Mental Health: Seeking therapy and trying medication were huge steps for me in addressing my depression. As I started feeling better mentally, I experienced a real boost in my overall well-being. It was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders, and I felt more like myself again.
  2. Increased Self-Care: Feeling better mentally made me more motivated to take care of myself physically. I found myself paying more attention to my appearance and health, which was something I hadn't prioritized before.
  3. Seeking Validation: Placing those single ads in the newspaper was a way for me to seek validation and affirmation from others. After struggling with depression and dealing with the aftermath of my past, receiving positive attention from potential dates was a feeling I never had before.
  4. External Validation vs. Internal Healing: While focusing on external appearance and going on dates provided temporary distractions, I realized that it wasn't addressing the deeper emotional wounds from my past. It was a reminder that true healing comes from within, and it's something I continue to work on every day.
  5. Lack of Self-Awareness: Despite making progress in my mental health journey, I still felt lost at times. Engaging in external activities, like dating, didn't always provide the introspection and self-discovery I needed. It was a reminder that healing is a journey, and I'm still figuring things out.

07 Sep 2024Navigating A Panic Attack00:17:33

Experiencing a panic attack can be very frightening. And it can be for many reasons. In my case it's the fear of reaching my dreams and experiencing the joy I deserve. When you grow up in a traumatic environment, you're used to pain, anxiety, and depression. It's the joy that I'm now learning to accept.

Have you ever had a panic attack?
Did you understand the core reason?
How did you take care of yourself?

  • Panic attacks can be managed by being present, recognizing the signs, and, paying attention to your body and mind.
  • Emotional well-being requires acknowledging and processing your feelings rather than pushing them away.

09 Oct 2024People Pleasing - Why We Sacrifice Ourselves For Others00:34:26

In this episode of Living in Mid-Bloom, I dive into the complex topic of people-pleasing. Together with my guest, Petra van Deijl, we explore why so many of us fall into the habit of putting others before ourselves. From childhood conditioning and fear of conflict to past trauma and guilt, people-pleasing can often feel like a trap that’s hard to escape. But there is hope! We also discuss practical steps to reclaim our sense of self and create healthier, more fulfilling relationships.

Three Ideas to Avoid the People-Pleasing Trap:

  1. Set Clear Boundaries: Define and communicate your personal boundaries, and practice saying “no” without guilt. Remember, saying no is a complete sentence.
  2. Prioritize Self-Care: Put your own needs first by scheduling regular time for activities that nurture and recharge you. When you prioritize yourself, others will follow suit.
  3. Reflect and Ask ‘Why?’ When you feel the urge to please, pause and ask, “Am I doing this out of genuine care or fear of disapproval?” Understanding your motivation can help you make more authentic choices.

Petra van Deijl is an International Certified Life Coach & Breath Work Practitioner, and,  works with clients from all over the world. Petra specializes in addressing narcissistic and emotional abuse within seemingly loving relationships.

07 Feb 2025Why Can't I Remember? And Do I Want To? - Part One00:48:11

My guest, Lizzie, and I have something in common. We’re both in one of those clubs that you don’t wanna be in but you are?  We both have dissociative disorders. Now neither of us like the term “Disorder”.  It sounds like something is wrong with us. When in fact, we were responding to trauma from our childhoods. So we prefer the term “Response”. But to limit any confusion I’ll continue to use “disorder” to describe our diagnosis. For me, it’s Dissociative Amnesia. For Lizzie, it’s Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).

Lizzie and I share our personal experiences about the impact of childhood trauma on our lives and our journeys of self-discovery through our own curiosity and through therapy.

“Dissociative disorders are mental health conditions that involve experiencing a loss of connection between thoughts, memories, feelings, surroundings, behavior and identity. These conditions include escape from reality in ways that are not wanted and not healthy. This causes problems in managing everyday life. Symptoms depend in part on the type of dissociative disorder and can range from memory loss to disconnected identities. Times of stress can worsen symptoms for a while, making them easier to see”. - Mayo Clinic

Lizzie is a freelance author and is currently working on her memoir.
