18 Nov 2022Trust and Estate Planning attorney profession hits home with her mothers diagnosis00:23:22

Ben Franklin has been quoted as saying “In this world nothing can be said to be certain except Death and taxes” Death is a harsh reality that none of us wants to think about or deal with regardless of our health. Death is part of life and planning your estate can give you peace of mind that your wishes will be met, and your loved ones are taken care of.

Allison Lee is a Trust and Estate Planning Attorney and the Associate General Counsel for Free Will.  Allison, whose career was helping others plan their estate now suddenly found it deeply personal.  She was shocked to learn that her otherwise healthy mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Allison shares her journey and the importance of estate planning.

Taking care of your Estate Planning will make things go smoothly.  Not having a plan in place your Estate could end up in Court and state law is going to govern where your assets go.  As hard as this can be the best thing we can do for our loved ones and ourselves is to have our arrangements in place.  This episode is not meant to take away hope but more to offer resources.  If you'd like more information, please contact Free Will at F-R-E-E-W-I-L-L-D-O-T-C-O-M   "As long as you speak my name, I shall live forever" - today's episode is dedicated to Melanie Darvin Stratler.

16 Apr 2022How excruciating back pain lead to a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer00:25:39

Lisa had excruciating back pain but related it to the fact she was a runner.  She went to the Dr and because she was also having digestive issues and just didn't feel "right." It was decided she would also get an appointment with a GI Dr.  Xray on her back didn't show anything so she tried pain management while trying to make an appointment with her gastrologist.  Due to COVID she wasn't able to get an appointment right away.  During her ultrasound she looked up at the screen and saw nothing but her pancreas.  She had a horrible feeling and she remembered a colleague mentioning his wife was a medical student and she would always say "don't F with the pancreas."  When she didn't hear back from the Dr she felt everything must be ok.  They finally got back to her and said we found something, we need to get in there right away. It took two weeks to get the biopsy and that waiting time felt like an eternity. Getting the news from a resident was a horrible experience.  She hadn't heard from her gastrologist and felt left trying to figure out what she was going to do at that point.  Her relationship with her Dr was filled with mistrust.   Things started to look up when her company provided her with information about a group called Pinnacle Care.  They help people who receive a devastating  diagnoses and helps manage the medical world.  Lisa openly talks about chemotherapy, trying to re learn your body again in regards to eating and taking the enzymes. Her family and friends were a great support during this time, support came from people she never met.  Trying to live life with a new normalcy.  3 things -Don't google! Reach out to PanCAN Patient Services for great resources; understand your treatment, do not be afraid to ask your Dr over and over again why are you doing this; you have to believe you are in that 11%, you have to have that mindset that says "I'm in that 11% and never let go of that, never let anyone tell you, you are not. This episode of Living Hope is dedicated to fellow pancreatic cancer survivor Jenna James.

03 Feb 2022A wife shares her journey with her husband’s diagnosis and the difficulties of being a Caregiver00:26:30

Colleen LaSalle shares her journey with her husband, John, diagnosed with stage lV pancreatic cancer.  John was put in a clinical trial and told with chemo he would have 3 years and without chemo one year, sadly John was gone in four months.  Colleen was John's Caregiver, it was difficult, she went from being his wife to being more like a parent.  She shares how she had to keep things as normal as possible for her two daughters. Colleen received no training or advice on how to be a Caregiver; it was a  learn as you go experience. Colleen has gone from being a wife, mother, caregiver, volunteer, advocate.  She wants to be there for others, to offer them the support and knowledge this journey has brought her, something that unfortunately she learned along the way.  Colleen and her girls are involved in bringing awareness and advocacy because they don't want John to be forgotten "he was here, he was important, he will always be important." This episode of Living Hope is dedicated to John LaSalle.  January is Clinical Trials Awareness Month and finding out John was in a clinical trial with an oral chemo that sadly did not help him but helped many pancreatic cancer survivors including myself was a little emotional for me but really brought the importance of clinical trials to a different meaning.

02 Aug 2021Living Hope-Wife refuses to give up the fight and starts a Foundation in memory of her husband.00:21:57

Agi and Ron met by chance when Agi’s father coached Ron’s son’s soccer team.  Little did they know that on that day they would meet, fall in love and marry 3 months later.   Ron was a real dynamite of a man, they balanced each other immediately.  Ron was a thinker and Agi was a doer. Partners in life, partners in business and partners in fighting pancreatic cancer.  Losing Ron was devastating but, Agi refused to give up on what they had been fighting for.  They were fighting for a cure, they were fighting to live.  After Ron’s death, Agi immediately took her pain and grief and turned it into something positive, the start of a foundation in memory of the man she loved.  Agi's daughter, Lisa had a promising career of her own.  Wanting to support her mother she agreed to help with the foundation while she was on maternity leave.  Though she fully intended to go back and pursue her career, 20+ years later Lisa is now the Executive Director for the Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research and Co-Founder of the annual event Tour de Pier.

Agi, not one to let any grass grow under her feet started working on the foundation immediately after Ron’s death in May 1997.  In July,  that same year, the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research was born.

When asked what pearls of wisdom Agi could share with other Caregivers – "Have your moments, not just the disease.  Your life is not about the disease, it’s about your relationship and about how you love each other."

For more information on the Hirshberg Foundation and the Tour de Pier please visit www. https://pancreatic.org/

17 Jul 2021Living Hope-Dr. Marcus Welby where are you?00:37:36

For those of you that may not know, Marcus Welby, M.D. was a medical drama show that aired from 1969 to 1976.  Dr Welby was a family practitioner, with a great bedside manner, kind heart and made house calls! How do Doctors of today compare to the Dr Welby's of yesteryear?  Why do some give you a heartbreaking diagnosis only to leave you on your own? Are they embarrassed, or do they feel like they failed because once you reach a certain point they can no longer help you?  How do some Doctors handle the diagnosis of a deadly disease?  What are they taught in medical school?  Many of you have expressed these same questions.  We've explored them here on www.octalkradio.biz Orange County's only Community Radio Station livestreaming from UCI Beall Applied Innovation at the Cove Thursdays at 11:00am PDT

10 May 2022What to do when someone dies00:32:57

In this episode of Living Hope we continue our conversation we started on March 24.  What to do when a loved one dies?  This is a subject no one wants to talk about but at some point it's information that can be helpful.  If we can all set down and talk about what we want when we die it would be so helpful for those left behind.  What is a  Advanced Health Care Directive? Is one needed?  Who needs to be notified? What kind of service should we have?  Would a check list be beneficial? These are some of the topics we talked about. It can be a heavy subject but we did have some laughs along the way.

30 Aug 2022What is the ViewRay MRIdian and how is it used for pancreatic cancer patients?00:28:38

Dr Kim joined us to talk about the use of the ViewRay MRIdian for treatment of pancreatic cancer at Hoag Hospital.  Dr Kim explains that the tumor needs to be hit with high energy x-ray beams.  To be able to hit the tumor you need to be able to see the tumor.  It's that simple.

This is the only machine that uses MRI imaging to visualize the tumor. Tumors move with each breath and this machine allows the tracking of the tumor in real time allowing them to be precise in delivering treatment.

This episode of Living Hope is dedicated to the donors of the View Ray MRIdian Dean and Gerda Koontz

03 Feb 2022The Year in Review Looking forward to what’s to come00:41:33

Looking back this has been an amazing year for Living Hope and for myself.  Coming out of my comfort zone going from Podcast Producer to Podcast Producer and Podcast Host!  Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I'd be here doing this.  This year we have shared my personal journey as well as the journeys of so many.  2021 has been anything but normal but hopefully the journeys shared have given us all hope and have inspired us in some way.  Though many of the journeys did not end the way we wanted, we shared in the tears, laughter, the understanding we weren't alone.  In 2022, we look forward to hearing from you.  Sharing your journey, ideas of what you'd like to hear more about.  Some may be controversial, but we hope you take something positive away from what you may hear.  In closing this episode of Living Hope is dedicated to all those that shared their journey, that watched or listened to Living Hope, the many non-profits that supported us helping us get off the ground.  A special thank you to Dawn Kamber, Public Affairs Director/Podcast Host of Impact OC, who started this many years ago and Paul Roberts, CEO and Station Manager who came up with the idea.  If you'd like to share your journey or have ideas for future episodes please email me at  livinghopepc@outlook.com or paul.roberts@octalkradio.net

Thank you for being part of our 2021 journey and to future journeys!

21 Jul 2021Living Hope-A simple Media Release leads to a long time commitment to bring awareness00:21:35

What happens when you take two people out of their comfort zone and turn the tables?  Special guest Dawn Kamber, Public Affairs Director and Host of “Impact OC” is usually on the other side of the mic.  Dawn interviews guests who impact Orange County in a positive way.  We turned the tables when we asked Dawn to share her journey with pancreatic cancer which started with a simple media release.  Even being in the media, like most, Dawn had never heard of pancreatic cancer until she heard Michael Landon had been diagnosed.  Why aren’t we hearing more about the disease before reading it in the obituary?  What do we need to do to get and keep pancreatic cancer in the media forefront and not just when a celebrity is involved?  Why does someone who doesn’t have a personal connection with pancreatic cancer become involved? Answers to these questions and more on OC Talk Radio Orange County’s only Community Radio Station livestreaming from  from UCI Beall Applied Innovation at the Cove Thursdays at 11:00am PDT

If you or anyone you know need help with their journey, please contact the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s Patient Services at www.pancan.org or call 877-2-PANCAN.  If you’d like to share your story or have story ideas, please contact Roberta Luna at LivingHope2055@outlook.com

18 May 2022What is a Caregiver?00:24:58

This episode of Living Hope is a continuation of a pervious conversation about being a Caregiver with Stephanie Ruvalcaba Ho. What is a Caregiver? If you provide help to another person in need, you are a caregiver. Caregivers can be professional - hired through an agency or a family member stepping up.  Caregivers come in all different types - the one who takes care of all the medical needs, runs errands, meals, personal needs.  There is a lot to being a Caregiver, many challenges, roll coaster of emotions. Even with all these feelings there are some good things that can come out of this difficult situation. Listen as we have a very open and honest discussion here only on OC Talk Radio, Orange County's only community radio station streaming live from UC I Beall Applied Innovation at the Cove.

This episode of Living Hope is dedicated to all Caregivers and thank them for their care, support and love during our journey.  I’d like to end with a quote from Former First Lady, Rosalynn Carter: “There are only four kinds of people in this world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who will need caregivers. Caregiving is universal.”

02 Jul 2023Why volunteer for a cancer that has such a dismal outcome?00:23:39

Why volunteer for a cancer that has such a dismal outcome? Bringing awareness being around people that you share something in common with helped her to heal having a voice helped her to feel empowered.

Stephannie was the Caregiver for her Grandmother in the non tradional sense.  She would visit her, read to her, dance for her or just hold her hand and talk with her.

Stephannie's favorite event is PurpleStride, this year she had a different role, she was able to speak with people attending and was able to share her story and hear their story.  In talking to people they expressed they felt hope, felt love and gratiful to have so many people there fighting for a cure.

Stephannie feels volunteering with this group is rewarding in itself.  Being a part of something that is giving back to people. The deep friendships you make with the people you volunteer with is rewarding.

"As long as you speak my name, I shall live forever." Is dedicated to my dad, Bill Whitson "Gramps" who died on June 1, 1998 - 25 years ago.

02 Jul 2022How a man goes from being healthy, to a diabetic with an inoperable pancreatic cancer tumor to being stable.00:27:03

Ken Parme, a husband, father, grandfather a man with many talents when asked how he wants to be remembered he replied very simply "as a kind man." Ken is a very kind, friendly, talented man who I've had the pleasure of knowing for a number of years.  It wasn't until he shared his journey with us that I realized how much we had in common in regards to our diagnosis.  In December 2012 Ken was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor.  The tumor was wrapped around his veins, and lying against his aorta.

Ken took good care of himself, ate right and was active. He was a power walker and one day on a walk with his wife Rebecca, he couldn’t keep up with her. Rebecca insisted he go see his doctor. Tests were done and Ken was told he was a diabetic and started on insulin immediately. After starting insulin, Ken still felt lousy, so his wife made an appointment with an endocrinologist. Ken, shares his journey starting with his diagnosis of an inoperable pancreatic cancer tumor, his treatment with chemotherapy, the use of the new Cyber-Knife, his eight years "stable status" and a book he and his wife wrote together. Ken and Rebecca Parme wrote a book “In The Gaze of The Divine, Life with Pancreatic Cancer.” from the patient/survivor and caregiver point of view. Available on Amazon.  Ken has also written a children's book available on Amazon “The Adventures of Madde Mckinsey

This episode of Living Hope is dedicated to Ken's wonderful, wife and Caregiver, Rebecca. We want to leave you with a quote from their book, “May we all get to the place where we can accept -let go- and focus on the blessing of the day.”

24 Feb 2024Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) Turns 25!00:33:51

Pamela Acosta Marquardt and Julie Fleshman have both been profoundly impacted by the loss of their parents to pancreatic cancer, which fueled their dedication to creating change. In 1996, Pam faced the loss of her mother after a six-month struggle with the disease. Confronted by the lack of resources and support for pancreatic cancer, she was driven to take action, ensuring that individuals and families affected by this illness would have access to vital information, resources, and hope. Similarly, Julie's journey at PanCAN was ignited by personal tragedy when she lost her father just four months following his diagnosis at the age of 52. Dissatisfied with the inadequate treatment options available, Julie has spent over two decades as a leader and a global catalyst for change, fighting for better outcomes for those facing pancreatic cancer. Together, their personal experiences have not only shaped their leadership at PanCAN but also exemplified their unwavering commitment to the cause.

26 Mar 2022How losing her parents lead her to volunteering00:34:11

Monica loses both her parents to pancreatic cancer, first her mother and later her father.  Her mother wasn't given many options - either chemo or let nature take its course.  With the low survival rate the decision made was to let nature take its course.  Monica being a researcher googled pancreatic cancer and found a chat group.  After reading a few stories posted by family members, Monica felt her mother had been given a death sentence.  After losing her mother in 2003 she continued to do research but found nothing was really being done.  She joined the PanCAN Albuquerque, New Mexico Affiliate in 2012 after attending her first PurpleLight. Monica always loved to volunteer, pancreatic cancer ended up choosing her mother and that lead her into the direction of volunteering with PanCAN.  Monica is the Social Media Chair of the Michigan Affiliate and has also served as the Advocacy Chair.  The first thing she tells people she meets who have been diagnosed or their family members is to contact PanCAN.  "I'd let them know there is hope not to give up, different things going."  Monica feels going to Advocacy Day and sharing your stories with members of congress is very empowering.  It's important our representative know "My mother was just not a statistic, she was not a number she was a real person."  Monica was completely blindsided when she found out her dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer some years later.  Her father had seen what his wife and gone through so he was a little more aware and his was found earlier.  His symptoms were different, jaundice, itchy skin, he was able to have the whipple but sadly died less than a year later.  Monica hasn't really come to terms yet in losing her father, she is still  mourning  her mother.  Losing both parents to pancreatic cancer Monica is more involved and invested in the fight against pancreatic cancer.  Quoting one of her favorite researcher, Dr Howard Crawford "It can be bent."  Monica's goal is to raise as much awareness, keep her mothers legacy alive, "I don't want her to ever be forgotten and she won't be forgotten through me or the work that I do."

This episode of Living Hope is dedicated to Monica's mother Ranjana Upadhyaya "MAA"

A family friend gave 14 year old Tori a purple journey to help her cope with her feelings after learning her father had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  Ironically at that time neither realized purple is the awareness color for pancreatic cancer.  Tori felt her journal offered her a safe place to write about her journey and also used this journal not only to write about her feelings but to also keep track of her dads symptoms, treatments, medications, test results, anything to do with his journey.  Hear how this teenage girl helped co-facilitate a support group for other teenagers who had lost their parent and how her experience led her to where she is today.  Only on OC Talk Radio, Orange County's only community radio station live streamed from UCI Beall Applied Innovation Center.

19 Feb 2023Pancreatic Cancer diagnosis - Not the best way to start your birthday.00:22:34

Tom, away from home, gets a call on his 65 birthday from his Dr, not wishing him a happy birthday but instead telling him she needed to see you as soon as possible.

Tom, very active and an enthusiast bike rider is diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.  Tom was not a candidate for surgery but went on a clinical trial.  Treatment went on for 15 months after which Tom received good news - he was "NED" - no evidence of disease.  Tom started an oral chemo and continues to take it today.  We talk about the importance of clinical trials, how he has been able to return to a "normal" way of life, he continues to ride his bike, play golf and enjoy life.  Tom continued to be as active as possible during treatment and found this was a way to help him through his treatment and the anxiety that goes along with treatment.  Tom shares his inspiration journey and how he continues to help others through their treatment and journey by hosting a support group through Zoom, every Friday 9am -10:30am PT - to join this support group or for more information regarding group please email Tom at ta20390@yahoo.com

08 May 2022A young woman experiences the role of Caregiver in two different ways.00:26:20

Stephannie helped take care of her grandmother, she wasn't her Caregiver in the traditional sense.  When asked to describe her grandmother Stephannie lovingly replied "tomboy and lace." Stephannie visited her grandmother everyday after she got home from work.  While others took care of her physical needs, Stephannie, which is just as important, took care of her emotional needs. Whether it was reading her stories, telling jokes, or modeling, Stephannie and her grandmother shared a very special time.

Stephannie, not yet over the loss of her beloved grandmother, finds herself dealing once again with a loved ones diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.  This time it is her mother-in-law, a woman she loves and respects.  Obviously, this woman feels the same way, she asks Stephannie to be her Caregiver.  Stephannie felt honored and she and her family moved to be closer to her mother-in-law.  Stephannie assumed the full responsibility of being her Caregiver, sometimes upsetting other family members.  Watch/listen as Stephannie shares her experience as a Caregiver in different capacities. @OC Talk Radio Orange County’s only community radio station streaming live from @UCI Beall Applied Innovation at the Cove.

19 Feb 2023You’ve heard the saying ”It’s not what you know but who you know.”00:26:15
"It's not what you know but who you know," was certainly true for 10-year pancreatic survivor Thom Mrozek.  Thom wasn't sure how public he wanted to be about his diagnosis, but when his daughter, who at that time attended an episcopal school asked at Chapel "can we pray for my dad?" her request started the ball rolling.   Thom woke up one morning with a recurring pain that went on for a few days.  The pain became worse, and he took himself to urgent care.  The location of his pain caused the urgent care Dr to check his heart.  His heart looked good, and the Dr felt it was a stomach problem probably an ulcer or acid reflux. He was given some medicine and told to follow up with his Primary Care doctor.  Thom went to his internist who ordered a series of tests.  Thom, standing in front of his office received a phone call from his Dr "Thom it's your pancreas, stop eating!" that comment lead to a "six-week testing treadmill."   Thom shares his inspirational journey and how a prayer request led to a community of support for Thom and his family.   "As long as you speak my name, I shall live forever." This episode is dedicated to Lupe Romero
