06 Dec 2022 | Anxiety & how to be practical about panic with psychotherapist, Josh Fletcher | 00:58:43
Welcome to this week’s slice of wellbeing with author, psychotherapist and top anxiety expert, Josh Fletcher. You might recognise him from videos on socials during the pandemic as Anxiety Josh where he shared his own story as well as advice having suffered from crippling anxiety; including panic attacks, agoraphobia, health anxiety and generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), as well as intrusive thoughts and obsessive compulsive behaviours. Josh openly discusses his own story of how he came to be diagnosed, how he overcame his anxieties and his journey to becoming a not-so-traditional- psychotherapist. We cover:
Josh has his own podcast called Panic Pod and has written three books, Panicking about Panic, Practical about Panic and co-wrote Untangle Your Anxiety with Dean Stott. He’s currently writing another book called, “And how does that make you feel?” (great title!) which revolves around 4 fictional characters all with different anxious presentations. His main reason behind the book? To normalise therapy and to get people going while also showing the other side and showing therapists are human too. Please be aware this episode also covers topics including loss and grief. Show notes: Sign up here for the exciting free mini-course to RESET your health from Sarah Ann Macklin. In this clip, I had a conversation with Dr. Casey Means about how to nourish our bodies through food. We discuss the importance of removing ultra-processed foods from our diets and focus on the key components that support cellular health: omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and micronutrients, probiotics, healthy proteins, and fiber. Dr. Means shares practical ways to include these elements in our daily meals. We also address the issue of food cravings and how they relate to unmet nutritional needs and the influence of the food industry. Dr. Means offers strategies to manage cravings by incorporating nutrient-rich foods and balancing blood sugar levels. 02 Aug 2022 | Sarah Ann's Reflections for Season 8 | 00:49:53
As we come to the end of a very exciting season eight, I wanted to personally share all the learnings I’ve learned from the last 12 episodes. I feel incredibly honoured as the host of this podcast to sit down and have inspiring, emotional conversations with such a diverse range of people. I’ve learned so much after eight seasons, but even more especially after these 12 episodes because this season we took a real, drive focus by increasing our production and going to every single guest’s house all over the country. And through that, being in their homes, connecting to them more personally, not only do I remember all of those conversations, but I really felt a sense that they opened up to me more as well. I feel really privileged and honoured. And for that reason, I wanted to end the series with a solo episode with all the things I’ve learned personally. We spoke with people from Professor David Nutt who looks at psychedelics and how we can actually wire our brain, to how the epicentre of our health is our gut health, and through entrepreneurial women such as Liz Earle, she taught me how we can engineer our own serendipity. So all of my findings and learnings, I am going to bring to you today to end series 8. If there’s anything you learned personally, please do let me know - I always love hearing from everyone who listens to the podcast. Send me an email or send me a DM. 17 Mar 2025 | Beyond the Surface: 5 Questions for the Soul with Oliver Burkeman | 00:10:42
Each week, I ask my guest five questions designed to nourish their mind, body, and soul pre interview. These questions help us explore what makes each guest tick as an imperfect, evolving human, taking them out of their heads and into their bodies. While our discussions often go deep into the intellect, these questions invite my guests to step out of their comfort zones, gain a fresh perspective, and perhaps hold a bit more compassion for themselves. I believe this shift from headspace to heart space is something we can all relate to – it’s the universal journey of being human. And as a listener, I hope you’ll come away feeling a little more connected, not only to these stories but to the shared truths and vulnerabilities we uncover here. Each conversation is an opportunity to peek behind the scenes and share in the humanity of those on the other side of the microphone. 14 Aug 2024 | Dr. Shefali: How To Break FREE From The Self-Awareness TRAP | 01:02:35
Can consciousness transform our lives and relationships? My recent conversation with Dr. Shefali would suggest so. What began as a discussion about self-awareness evolved into a deep exploration of how consciousness can transform every aspect of our lives, from our relationships to our sense of purpose. Dr. Shefali not only offers insights and strategies, but we confront truths such as: Are we self-aware? How can we reclaim power in relationships? Why is understanding our shadow essential? Whatever the main relationships in your life, be it romantic, professional or as a parent, this episode will shine a light on how you can show up with self-awareness and authenticity. Dr. Shefali is a NYT bestselling author of books on conscious parenting and living. Oprah calls her "revolutionary" and "the best child expert" she's interviewed, and her message has reached millions through social media and appearances. This conversation gave me a new perspective on conscious living and tools for self-discovery, and I hope you take away from this as much as I did. In this fascinating episode of Live Well, Be Well, I sit down with Professor Gideon Lack, one of the world’s foremost experts on allergies. We dive deep into the rising prevalence of allergies, exploring the two significant waves of the allergy epidemic—respiratory and food-related—and what they mean for us today. Professor Lack sheds light on the hygiene hypothesis, explaining how modern cleanliness impacts our immune systems and the skin barrier, potentially leading to allergies. We also discuss his pioneering LEAP study, which found that introducing peanuts early in life dramatically reduces the risk of peanut allergies—a revelation that’s reshaped allergy prevention guidelines. We cover why some people develop allergies later in life, practical tips for managing both respiratory and food allergies, and the role pets and a less sanitised environment might play in reducing allergic conditions. Whether you’re curious about allergy prevention for infants or navigating allergies on a plant-based diet, this episode is packed with actionable insights to help you live well. About Professor Gideon Lack Professor Gideon Lack is a leading paediatric allergist and researcher at King’s College London. 20 Sep 2021 | How can we have a healthy relationship with social media, with Niomi Smart | 01:09:05
There are nearly 3.5billion active social media users, and every 6.4 seconds a new account has been created. Many of us use our smartphones as companions. We update our friends, work colleagues and acquaintances on our daily movements and memorable moments in our lives. At its core, social media is a powerful communication tool that has changed how individuals interact with one another. It speeds up how people exchange and share information, thoughts, and ideas across virtual networks. However, social media does have downsides. Some evidence suggests that its use in particular, its overuse — can negatively affect mental health in numerous ways. In today's episode I speak to Niomi Smart, content creator, vlogger and the founder of Smart Skin. With a global following of more than 4.6 million across her digital and social media platforms, Niomi has spent all of her adult life navigating social media. We explore if it is possible to form a healthy relationship with social media and why this has been fundamental for Niomi. 16 Apr 2020 | How Food Affects our Emotions with Kimberley Wilson | 01:06:52
This episode features Kimberley Wilson, a psychologist and author specialising in how to build a healthy brain, an area I firmly believe in when it comes to nutrition and brain health. In the last four weeks we have all been thrown into an unfamiliar and daunting world. Therefore, it isn’t entirely surprising that two thirds of Britons are reporting that it is harder to stay positive about the future and over half of us find it a struggle to stay positive day-to-day. In this episode we uncover why we may be struggling to cope with a mixture of emotions at present, what strategies we can implement to help and what foods may help support our brains. You will soon be able to tell, Kimberley and I had a lot of fun throughout this podcast and I hope it helps bring some laughter as well as important information to you all too. 05 Jul 2021 | When clean eating goes to far with Dr Rachel Evans | 01:00:41
What often starts with the pursuit of ‘healthy’ eating, can turn into a very restrictive lifestyle and damaging consequences, resulting in nutrient deficiency, malnutrition and severe anxiety around food. Orthorexia is based on behaviours that are ‘unhealthy’ or ‘obsessive’ around food. Understandably, orthorexia can be difficult too diagnose as we see a rise in the pursuit of healthy eating. In today's episode I speak to Dr Rachel Evans, a chartered psychologist and has herself suffered from orthorexia and bulimia. Rachel speaks from her personal experience of her eating disorder and may be triggering for some people. Show notes Host @sarahannmacklin | www.sarahannmacklin.com |

For more than thirty years, Liz has remained a respected and award-winning authority in the world of beauty, natural nutrition, health and wellbeing. She is dedicated to sharing her knowledge as a broadcaster (having started her TV career on ITV’s This Morning in 1989, she’s still a contributor to the show), writer and trusted household name, as well as being a best-selling author with a range of lifestyle titles and a multi-brand founder. Liz opens up about the trials and the tribulations of building a beauty empire, and how she got to where she is today. Liz Earle is a champion of women’s health, media influencer, author of 36 books, TV presenter, podcast host and charity-founder. Imposter phenomenon is associated with impaired job performance, decreased satisfaction at work and burnout. To help me explore this further, I speak to phenomenal Dr. Valerie Young. 16 Aug 2020 | When can our relationships with food become problematic with Renee Mcgregor | 01:11:04
We all have an emotional connection with food, and for some during lockdown this has been emphasized more than others. Disruption to many of our carefully planned routines, lack of access to social networks and increased anxiety means food has become a comfort in time of need. Alongside the current media pressure to “transform yourself” during lockdown, these messages can amplify the internal dialogue and make the struggle with poor body image and a difficult relationship with food even harder. For many of us who rely on the gym or struggles with exercise addiction, seeing the nation’s newfound fitness craze under lockdown has also proved triggering. To help make sense of it all is Renee Mcgregor is a leading Sports and Eating disorder specialist dietitian with 20 years’ experience working in clinical and performance nutrition. 17 Jan 2023 | Intimacy, Pleasure & Sexual Empowerment with Bibi Brzozka | 01:11:06
How empowered do you feel when it comes to your pleasure? In this week’s episode of the #LiveWellBeWell podcast, we’re speaking to Bibi Brzozka. She’s a VITA certified Love, Sex and Relationship Coach, Holistic Sexuality International Speaker and Energetic Lovemaking Guide. After 15 years in Finance and Banking, she took the leap and embarked on a personal growth journey into sexuality and experienced her first full-body orgasm at age 35. We loved this episode as it’s all about empowering ourselves to tap into intimacy, teaching us how to improve our relationships as well as our pleasure - whether solo or partnered. This episode as well as Bibi’s courses on her website are focussed on opening your heart and mind on this topic, connecting them to the experiences we have and want to have and also, to our pleasure. It’s also about changing our sometimes skewed mindsets from the social narratives we’re fed and instead, encouraging conversations around these topics which are often seen as “taboo” or “awkward” even when between close friends and partners. Bibi shares advice and tips around recognising and undoing any shame you might feel around this topic – a common issue for a lot of us. We discuss conscious sexuality, what it is, how to explore it and also reframe what sex is. We’ll also discuss orgasms, the different types there are, tips to help you achieve full-body orgasms, and the pleasure and intimacy that goes beyond orgasms. Do you have self-love practice? Great if you do, but if you don’t, don’t worry as we’ll also discuss how we can create those practices - we’ve got you! It all starts with the self, right? Finally, we also learn how we can improve connections with our partners, tips for bringing up what can sometimes feel like awkward conversations with partners, and how to articulate wants and desires to them, as we go through some exercises with Bibi. After this episode, you will definitely have tools that will help you to take control and feel empowered when it comes to your pleasure. Happy listening! 14 Sep 2020 | Navigating the FODMAP diet for IBS treatment with Dr Jane Muir | 00:58:10
We spend three quarters of a billion pounds on probiotic products that promise to balance our microbiome. We sip on kombucha and pickle kimchi. The evidence stacks when we discuss the connection between our brain and gut. With two out 10 people in the UK suffering with IBS, and no cure for those who suffer with IBS, severe IBS symptoms can heavily implode on peoples lives. In this episode I speak to Dr Jane Muir, lead dietitian at Monash university. Researchers at Monash discovered certain short chain carbohydrates could not be digested and caused aggravation for many people with IBS, naming these, FODMAPs. Although research suggests that there is not one single cause for IBS, there are a variety of treatments, including that can help improve symptoms and thus quality of life. We discuss how a low FODMAP diet may help improve symptoms of IBS, alongside other treatments such as CBT, hypnotherapy and movement. 08 Dec 2020 | How to eat sustainability with dietitian Louise Symington | 01:01:59
How can we achieve a dietary intake which protects our health and our planet at the same time? One that is affordable and equitable? When we look at food sustainability, we need to include protecting populations from non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, producing our food with fewer resources, such as land, water and fuel to help feed to fast growing population. And it doesn't stop there, ethical food labelling can be a minefield of who to trust and not to trust. To help me uncover this important topic, I speak to registered dietitian Louise Symington, aka the sustainable dietitian. With over 15 years experience, Louise has advised the Green Food Project and worked in food policy and worked with Sustain to provide schools and local authorities on providing good food quality. 04 Oct 2020 | An Agents View: Live Episode at Be Well Summit with Model Agent Karen Diamond from Models 1 | 00:24:57
It is not very often that we get to hear an agents view on models health. Many times people compare models to athletes. Needing to be strict with their diets and vigorous exercise regime, a short career in a high pressured environment. Mental health is known to suffer from daily comparisons of high standards and rejection. In the last of the LFW special season, I speak to Karen Dimond, owner and director of Models 1, a leading modelling agency in the heart of London. Karen speaks very openly acknowledging the press that agents get is absolutely dreadful - especially during London Fashion Week because there's a huge spotlight on models. Highlighting there's always going to be a front page picture of a slim model who has been shot at an angle to look incredibly thin, which then becomes something which is being celebrated, but the reality is you do have to be strong and healthy to be a model. 13 Dec 2022 | Men’s and Women’s Fertility, Egg-Freezing, & Mindset with Dr Larisa Corda | 01:22:36
Are you one of the 3.5 million people in the UK impacted by infertility? With egg-freezing becoming more popular, it can be hard to know what information to trust. That's why we have invited Dr Larisa Corda, an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and one of the UK's leading Fertility experts, to join us on this week's episode of the Live Well Be Well Podcast to discuss all things fertility. With egg-freezing on the rise (even before Jennifer Aniston’s recent news around the topic), there is a lot of information and misinformation out there not just about this but about fertility in general, so we wanted to do a podcast and lay (excuse the pun) it all out there. Are you considering having a baby in the near future, or are you single and not sure of your options? If so, this episode is for you! We'll discuss the process of egg-freezing, how an orgasm can play a vital role in ensuring a healthy pregnancy, the mental health aspect of fertility, and how men can and should be included in the conversation. We'll also cover overall health and how it can impact fertility, debunk myths and misinformation and discuss IVF. Tune in to learn more about your options and what you can do now to help with fertility. Catch the full episode now. 02 Oct 2024 | #1 Self-Compassion Expert: How to Regulate Your Nervous System for Better Health | Dr. Kirstin Neff | 01:13:06
Many of us think self-compassion is just about being kind to ourselves, or even perhaps that it implies a sense of laziness or self-indulgence. But Dr. Kristin Neff completely challenges these ideas. She reveals how self-compassion is actually a powerful tool for motivation and resilience, and explains why our culture, and even our evolutionary instincts, can work against it. Dr. Kristin Neff PhD, is a professor in educational psychology, and the world's expert on self-compassion having established it as a field of study. In this conversation, we talk about the science of self-compassion and how it's linked to burnout and emotional eating. Dr. Neff's insights on gender differences in self-compassion and the famous "donut study" make us rethink our whole approach to wellbeing. This conversation hit close to home, being someone who has experienced burnout. Dr. Neff breaks down complex concepts like the three elements of self-compassion in a way that's easy to understand and apply to daily life. Remember, being kind to yourself isn't a luxury - it's essential for wellbeing. And the best part? It's free and available to everyone, anytime. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this episode. 19 Feb 2025 | How to Prevent Alzheimer’s and Boost Your Brain Health with these PROVEN Foods | The Brain Docs | 01:25:55
I’ve always been fascinated by brain health—how we think, feel, and function is deeply tied to how we live our lives. And yet, for so long, cognitive decline has been framed as an inevitable part of ageing. But what if that’s not the full story? In this Live Well, Be Well episode, I sit down with two of the world’s leading neurologists, Drs. Dean and Ayesha Sherzai to explore the cutting-edge science of brain health, neuroplasticity, and longevity. Their work is revolutionising our understanding of how we can actively shape our cognitive future—and the truth is, we have far more control than we think. We get into: ✔️ The myth of brain ageing—why decline isn’t inevitable and how we can strengthen our cognition at any age. ✔️ The power of neuroplasticity—how small daily habits can rewire the brain for better focus, memory, and resilience. ✔️The sleep-brain connection. Why deep sleep is the ultimate detox and the number one factor for long-term cognitive health. ✔️Food as medicine for the brain—how the MIND Diet has been shown to reduce Alzheimer’s risk by over 50%. ✔️The real impact of stress on cognition—and how we can train our brains to handle pressure more effectively. ✔️The attention crisis—how social media and technology are rewiring our minds and what we can do to regain control. Drs. Dean and Ayesha Sherzai are co-directors of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at Loma Linda University and the authors of The Alzheimer’s Solution. Their research proves that up to 80% of dementia cases could be prevented—and in this episode, they share the simple but powerful changes we can all make today to build a healthier, sharper brain for life. This conversation really shifted the way I think about my brain health, and I hope it does the same for you. 22 Mar 2022 | How to unwire perfectionism with flexible thinking with Poppy Jamie | 00:59:28
Why do we need to think differently? How are our thinking styles harming our health? We can set the illusion with ourselves that everything is fine with material success, but this illusion can come at a high cost in our mental health, resulting in low self-esteem, insecurity and anxiety. We are often most terrified of the thing that makes us the most human, the ability to feel. We’ve created our own patterns through learnt behaviours of how we should perform, think and feel, yet is this pattern really making us happy? To help me delve into this conversation a little further, I speak with Poppy Jamie who is one of the world’s leading entrepreneurs, podcast hosts and speakers in the mental wellbeing and mindfulness space. Poppy is on a mission to democratise conversation and tools for emotional and mental health and she shares more on this in today’s episode.
