02 Feb 2021 | March 1988 Teen Life: Sex, Flirts & Tiaras | 01:08:06
We're delving into the features and ephemera regarding TEEN LIFE in the March 1988 issue!
Karen Catchpole dares to be frank on the matter of "Losing Your Virginity" (and parents/right-wing wackos were PISSED). Catherine Gysin goes undercover at the Miss South Carolina USA pageant and learns secret uses for Vaseline. The whole staff collaborates on a "How To Flirt" guide…of sorts. In the spec piece that got her the job at Sassy, Christina Kelly addresses how to handle "Talk Behind Your Back." Catherine speaks to the survivors of three young people who died by suicide. Christopher Newbound kicks off the fiction section with "My Name Is Daniel."
Then it's on to the departments: On The Road to Miami; What He Said about why guys dumped their girlfriends; and a real mixed bag of Help. (What to do when Mom kisses Boyfriend is just one of many questions WE have for that possibly fake letter writer.)

09 Feb 2021 | March 1988 Pop Culture: Mack, Mallory & Iron Lad | 01:11:30
After flicking through Mackenzie Astin, Keith Coogan (yes, again), Married To The Mob, Tom Cruise, and more (Glemby) in What Now, it's on to the reviews. How do we vibe with the star ratings given to Rick Astley, Madonna, and R.E.M. -- of course -- in Listen Up? What about Moonstruck and September in Watch It?
Then, once we revisit Charlie Schlatter, our very first One To Watch, it's on to the pop culture features. Christina and an Iain Blair tag-team to profile a circa-Less Than Zero Robert Downey Jr. Then John Elder pervs all over poor Justine Bateman. 16 Feb 2021 | March 1988 Fashion Etc: Bandanas, The Boardwalk & Bugle Boy | 01:01:40
Once Tara and Pam have described the fashions they were sporting or coveting in March of 1988, we critique the cover, and then get into the fashion stories of Sassy's premiere issue, set on a boardwalk, at an old railyard, and in a palette of creams and beiges. What Next also forecasts coming fashion trends with pinpoint accuracy -- thanks, Michael Kors and Betsey Johnson! The beauty features teach you how to use bandanas and makeup; then About Face tells you about bang trims and hot oil treatments, and Body Talk warns you about gonorrhea, weed, and NutraSweet. After Elise gets a makeover (and WILDLY negged in the process), we take a quick trip through some of the issue's most memorable ads, including Benetton, Levi's, Cherry Lane trying to make bloomers happen, and which Sassy Club products we'd be bugging our mom to buy us.
Then: the Magazineyness! Jane's first Diary (her editor's letter) has a culturally insensitive lede but otherwise makes us want to keep reading. The letters to the editor in Say What are probably just as real as the ones in Help! And should Sara Walker, the subject of Inside Out (the magazine's inside back cover column for magazine production ephemera) who actually named the magazine itself, maybe have been its first cover model? Start thinking about how you can source these outfits on the cheap as you listen along! We took Sassy's very first quiz -- How Competitive Are You? -- and so can you! It's online and linked right here in the show notes. We each pick one question that particularly resonated with us and discuss it, and then report on our scores. Next, we play some of your calls. A few are about the quiz; a few are about how Sassy first came into listeners' lives; and a few are on subjects we never ever could have predicted, and we love them. Then, we read an email from an O.G. Sassy staffer. Learn more about us, yourself, AND your fellow listeners with this latest episode! 23 Feb 2021 | April 1988 Teen Life: AIDS, Divorce & Dating A Rock Star | 01:04:10
We're back to TEEN LIFE topics, now in the April 1988 issue!
Christina Kelly gets a first-person account from a man whose friend died of AIDS as a teen. Karen Catchpole demystifies what it's actually like to date a rock star, killing some Beastie Boys crushes in the process. Karen then dares to tell the truth about boys' bodies -- not just the parts in their boxer shorts, though that is admittedly what we're mostly interested in. And Catherine Gysin prepares readers for how their lives might change after their parents' divorce.
Christina returns with the Short Short Story "What Sudie Didn't Tell Me." On The Road takes a trip to Austin (a place all your co-hosts have lived and loved!). Body Talk moves from Fashion to Teen Life, and with it our comments on its reporting on pap smears, golf, and cross training. Help has some truly wild questions we must pray are fake before closing things out with What He Said: "What do you think of girls who make the first move?" May 1988 was a big one for pop culture: the airing of the St. Elsewhere series finale meant the dawning of the Tommy Westphall Universe! After discussing that, plus some other big moments in contemporaneous TV finales, we take a stroll through What Now. Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy, stretching as actors! Patrick Swayze, opening a restaurant in New York! Karen, breaking a Tiffany album in half! And Pam delves into the dark history of Anna Jarvis, creator of Mother's Day! Finally, the issue folds One To Watch into its one and only pop culture feature, having Christina interview FOUR Ones To Watch. The issue also tells you everything you need to know about breasts -- or, almost, as Pam informs her moderately horrified co-hosts. Catherine's report on two 11-year-old child geniuses is dark in the moment, and gets darker after she leaves, as you can see in further reporting linked in the show notes. Pam and Tara are enthralled by Elizabeth Mosier's "Wheels," and former Hawaii residents Tara and Dave have some fact-checking notes when On The Road heads to Honolulu. 27 Apr 2021 | June 1988 Fashion Etc.: Hippies, Hat Crimes & A Hacked-Up Prom Dress | 00:47:25
We're talking about the fashion and beauty of the June 1988 issue! Why is "My Backyard" in black-and-white, and did it make us less likely to covet the clothes? Which panelists hate all the hippies (and the hippie looks) of "Hip Hip Hippie"? Did any models cut their feet modeling barefoot in "Big Brights," and what the hell does "popsicle speed" mean? Did you attempt to tie-dye using What Next's instructions? Did "Some Things Never Change" make you nostalgic for your grandma's style, or Tim Conway's comedy? Isn't that a co-host of The Real on the About Face page? SHOULD you cut up your prom dress? How wild are "The Wild Ones" of Coty Wild Musk? Do we still think Mary Clarke is cool and envy reader Barbara Francis's day at the magazine? Some of these questions will be answered in our latest episode! 11 May 2021 | July 1988 Teen Life: Queer Couples, Guys Not To Date & Outdoor Parties | 01:01:17
What was going on in Teen Life in the July 1988 issue? A LOT. First, Catherine profiles a pair of queer couples she and Jane met at a legendary LGBT dance at Columbia. Then, we learn how to throw three distinct kinds of outdoor summer parties...and we have notes. Christina schools us on the five types of guys we should NOT date; Pam's not sure if that means, like, ever? And the editors' suggestions for ways to get fit without really noticing you're exercising are confusing: there's kind of a world of difference between how much you exert yourself skateboarding as opposed to floating in a lake. Lauren Yaffe's short story "Under The Light" takes us to camp before On The Road takes us to Vienna, WV. Body Talk informs us about fitness walking, potato chips, cervical caps, and shinsplints. We hone in on the Help letters about drug-using parents, sex-having step-siblings, masturbation, and stinky feet. Finally, we discuss What He Said about losing his virginity. Steal that cocaine out of your mom's purse (spoiler) and join us! 18 May 2021 | July 1988 Pop Culture: Dating Game, Aussie Bands & Cool Breezes | 01:05:52
Our discussion of the pop culture topics in the July 1988 issue of Sassy turns into a wild ride, as Dave takes tough stances on overstuffed comic books, Pam fact-checks an item on Keanu Reeves's name, and a factoid about fireworks ends up in a revelation about pediatric dentistry in Saskatchewan in the 1980s. Watch It covers Permanent Record and Running On Empty, among others; then Listen Up assigns Jenny Morris the wrong nationality but also tells us about a solo project from a guy in The Smiths. Chris Young tries (and fails) to break the One To Watch curse. Then it's on to the features: Christina reports from the set of The All New Dating Game and delivers a roundup of Australian bands, before Karen profiles a very VERY young Chynna Phillips. While the July 1988 cover goes hard for American-flag style (...and, okay, so does Sassy Club), the rest of the fashion in this issue is not overly patriotic. We're going to Arizona -- or somewhere very dry and hot -- for a swimwear spread. We're in an old-timey cottage for some undergarment looks. And then: stripes. So many stripes. We're also learning about hot-weather hair help, products from the beauty closet the Sassy staff swears by, how to look like a skateboarder (and possibly get called a poser in the process), and so much more. Stick some American-flag toothpicks in your hair -- or don't -- and join us! 08 Jun 2021 | August 1988 Teen Life: Death Row, Teacher Crushes & Boys On Makeup | 01:04:11
When we say the Teen Life topics of the August 1988 issue run the gamut, that is precisely what we mean. We're going to start with the story of the youngest person ever sentenced to Death Row; then review the results of a survey conducted on 300 boys in malls, on topics ranging from when they want to get married to which outfit they'd most like to see you wear on a date. Crushing on a teacher? Christina has advice on that, some of which has not aged so well. And Barbara Bondrack's short story takes us backstage at a rock show...sort of. On The Road takes us to Boston; Body Talk covers exercise bands and constipation; Help has some advice about confusing sex dreams and bed-wetting (unrelated). Two extremely important departments make their début: Stuff You Wrote and It Happened To Me! And the first IHTM is about...getting an abortion! After that heavy topic, we need to wind down with What He Said about the upcoming presidential election. Tone down your eyeliner -- that's how dudes like it, apparently -- and join us! 15 Jun 2021 | August 1988 Pop Culture: Lou Diamond Phillips, Guest Critics & Baby River Phoenix | 00:51:02
The pop culture coverage in the August 1988 issue is a bit slighter than we're used to, allowing us to get into nearly every bit of it. What Now tells us to get hype for The Fly II, Haunted Summer, and The Prince Of Pennsylvania, also mentioning in passing a comedy called Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, shrug. It also gets into John Stamos's new haircut, a Europe member's birthday, the unreleased Jon Cryer/Penelope Spheeris movie Dudes, the Amnesty International tour, and the dearth of women in heavy metal. Outside pop culture, we learn about "the crack" in the Sassy Glossary, and hunt down photos of the River Phoenix poster that the previous owners of our magazine copies obviously ripped out before selling them to us. To mix it up, the magazine gets a bevy of young stars it's recently interviewed, or about to -- including Alex Winter (twice), Paul Hipp, Alan Boyce, Johnny Depp, Annabeth Gish, and more -- to serve as guest critics in Watch It and Listen Up. And finally, Christina does yeoman's work in her write-around profile of an unavailable Lou Diamond Phillips. We hope YOU are available to listen! Let's get fashionable, August 1988-style! It's time to start your back-to-school shopping, and you KNOW that means you're going to see a fashion story about plaid. Have you also heard about denim? Or sweaters? Because those get a moment in the spotlight too. What Next is also going to tell you what's hot on the runways of real, grown-up fashion brands, while What Now scales back the difficulty level with a craft involving buttons. (Don't be scared.) This issue also features the premiere of We Try It, with Sassy staffers raiding the beauty closet and reviewing things like the Conair Fashion Plates iron that can crimp a star into your hair! You'll also learn about Cheryl in Diary, and about everyone's jobs in a feature in which all the staffers try subbing in for one another for a day. 13 Jul 2021 | September 1988 Teen Life: Racism, Boarding School & Talking Toes | 00:53:09
Sassy's first back-to-school issue makes a few major missteps: a feature called "Living With Racism" whose white author relentlessly others her interview subjects, all young women of color; and an imbecilic fiction story from premiere issue Justine Bateman harasser John Elder. But "Where The Boys Aren't," about the all-girl boarding school Emma Willard, leaves at least one of your co-hosts yearning for some single-sex scholastics. Then we go On The Road to Lexington, where Sassy is disabused of some of its hick stereotypes; get an It Happened To Me from a girl whose house was used as a Rain Man shooting location; hear What He Said about female athletes (and, as usual, wish we hadn't); and take a trip through the feelings being expressed in Stuff You Wrote. This is the POP CULTURE episode, not Fashion Etc., but given all the talk of hair, we'd get it if you got confused. As extensions! On arms! Stats about who's dyeing what shade! It's a lot. Watch It has some harsh words for the Pet Shop Boys' full-length film. Listen Up features, among others, a band from Australia's nearest neighbor -- hey, Crowded House! And the features tell us all about Kevin Dillon, Amanda Peterson, and a bunch of bad candids we're supposed to think represent female stars' personal style when, let's be real, they almost certainly didn't. We're dealing with the fashion, beauty, and magazine-y topics of the September 1988 issue, and not dealing with them well because the editors have given us so much to yell about! Which garments are not safe to wear in a creek, or without pants? Why would anyone hike their giant pants up so high? WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO YOUR DAD'S OLD JEANS?! We also look at the cold war between surfers and skateboarders (???); what's new in shoes, socks, and hair removal; new ads; Sassy Club; and why Neill gets rave reviews for...doing his actual job. Our treat for October (as the spine line promises) is a brand-new issue, and we're starting things off by discussing its Teen Life topics! Catherine goes to a weight loss camp and collects insights from her fellow female staffers on how to ask out dudes. Karen facilitates as three readers make over their bedrooms in very different styles. Christina returns to the fiction department with a cautionary tale about jelly beans. All that, plus Body Talk; a BUNCH of Help letters from readers signing themselves "Confused"; and a Stuff You Wrote submission that is...not in good taste. Pour yourself a bowl of jelly beans and listen! Our coverage of October 1988's pop culture topics kicks off with a big announcement: we're on Patreon! And we've got lots of cool things planned for those who support us there! We get out our electron microscopes to peruse the two-page Columbia House spread and choose the 12 Hot Hits we're going to buy for a Cool Penny. We bring you highlights from What Now, from a rudely dismissed River Phoenix biography to a beauty queen who infiltrated a pageant! We review the reviews of A Fish Called Wanda, Joy Division's Substance, Monkey Shines, UB40's self-titled album, and more! The latest male One To Watch is...really not, but later we are introduced to FOUR lady Ones To Watch who've all had great careers. We also journey to Long Island to meet Brian Bloom, and his very-involved momager. Don't miss it! 24 Aug 2021 | October 1988 Fashion Etc.: Coats, Beats & Hate Mail | 01:06:30
What are you wearing in October 1988? Sassy wants to show you a lot of coats (which look good when accessorized with a boyfriend), a story inspired by the Beats, and jumpers. It also wants you to ruin a sweater with an assload of bells, and stick a bunch of hatpins in the tallest hat you can find. A beauty feature on how to achieve perfect skin proves to be another strangely formative story for two of your co-hosts, though the About Face items that most resonated are just...strange. Then & Now does a glam '40s-style makeover; the ads take us through ABC Daytime stars, the two jobs available to women, and baffling typographical choices. Sassy Club gets spooky for October, Diary highlights Andrea, Say What blows the lid off a plagiarism scandal, and haters get ONE WHOLE PAGE to air their grievances. Sassy is, of course, very proud of the work they did in their first few issues -- describing what readers' first sexual experiences might be like, demystifying boys' bodies, profiling out queer couples, and so on. But apparently the hate mail we read in the October issue was just a tiny fraction of what they received, or so we must surmise given November's lead feature: "Virgins Are Cool"! The issue then wends its way through how to land very cool jobs; what life is like for sisters who just cannot get along; a trip to Portland, Maine; and not one but two pieces about living with a mother who is ill. All this and much more: we hope you'll be thankful for our first episode on the November 1988 issue! 14 Sep 2021 | November 1988 Pop Culture: Axl, Ricki & A Guy From INXS Who Is Not Michael Hutchence | 00:56:55
What Now? Or should we be pronouncing it "What NOW"? An extraordinarily salty Christina fills the two-page spread by denigrating Jane Wiedlin's animal activism, casting doubt on Jason Gedrick's sincerity when speaking about his mental health issues, and saves her last bit of poison for Remote Control's Marisol, who was not even still ON Remote Control at the time! Watch It once again lets Neill half-ass a review (this time for the Sasha Mitchell vehicle Spike Of Bensonhurst) amid more considered critiques of Imagine, Memories Of Me, and more. Listen Up brings us reviews of Cruel Story Of Youth (not the movie), Joan Armatrading, and Kylie Minogue's undeniably derivative self-titled debut. One To Watch breaks its curse by profiling someone who is still an actual A-List star in our day: one Mr. Brad Pitt. And for our features, Christina settles for INXS...........guitarist Kirk Pengilly before sitting down for some unwarranted body talk with Hairspray's Ricki Lake. Join us to hear it all! It's hard to know what the editors think their reader is doing in November 1988, based on the issue's fashion and style content. Is she dressing drably for a job? Visiting the Southwest (again) in suede? Attending a formal girls-only party? Maybe all three in succession! 05 Oct 2021 | December 1988 Teen Life: Smoking, Preachers & Persimmons | 00:56:57
It's time for festive fun with the December 1988 issue, and that means...kicking off with a real bummer of a Catherine story about two teen preachers, one of whom should have probably been removed from his father's care. Christina tries to fulfill Jane's request that she figure out what being "in love" actually is, and isn't. Karen brings us what is essentially a holiday "What Now," with gift ideas, recipes, fun facts, and a baffling layout. Karen then tries to convince her readership that smoking is uncool, fighting against decades of pop culture to the contrary. The whole staff pitches in on a holiday-themed short story. And then we're on to the departments! Exercise tights in Body Talk! Going On The Road to Tempe! Highlights from Help and What He Said (about consent)! And another wild installment of Stuff You Wrote! 3, 2, 1, HAPPY NEW YEAR! It's 1989, and we're kicking off our coverage of the January issue by talking about its Teen Life topics. What's teen pregnancy like for the dads? Why is your body going wacko? How did Christina survive an Outward Bound rafting trip? And who was named the very first Sassiest Girl In America? (Okay, the cover kind of gives that one away.) There's also What He Said about tattoos; a trip to Wabash, IN; another too-whimsical fiction story; a wildly fake It Happened To Me; and so much more. Make some noise! 09 Nov 2021 | January 1989 Pop Culture: Mary Stuart Masterson & Wacko Entertainment Poll Results | 00:54:30
The pop culture topics of the January 1989 issue cover a lot of ground, from a sad update on June 1988 child genius profile subject Adragon DeMello to the movie Patrick Swayze's doing instead of a Dirty Dancing sequel (it's only ROAD HOUSE!!!), five-star reviews for two very dark movies, and a sweet profile of Mary Stuart Masterson. But there's also a lot of snarking at the stars! Duran Duran's latest dance album gets slammed. XXXOOO, says the February 1989 spine line, and the issue is full of Valentine's spirit...but first we need to talk about Christina's article on unhoused teens in New York. THEN we can get to her 12 DEFINITIVE ways to tell if a guy loves you, as a treat. (What He Said flips the question by asking a panel of dudes how they can tell when a girl likes THEM.) There's also another short story by the great Elizabeth Mosier, technological innovations in braces and pregnancy tests, a trip to Chicago, a first-person account of OCD, and much much more. While the reviews and What Now items educate us about peace signs and future druid Julian Cope, it's two real Italians and a fake one who get the most attention. Peter DeLuise returns in a What Now blurb about a bad Valentine's Day; Alyssa Milano succeeds in convincing Catherine that she is not "stupid" (that's Catherine's word, not ours!); and One To Watch notches another win with future Friends star Matt LeBlanc back when he was only associated with Fruitful Bran. After we take the confounding February 1989 quiz -- How Romantic Are You? -- and share our results, we dive into your latest calls, and they are doozies. Your fellow listeners tell us their experiences with: the scary "real" "memoir" Go Ask Alice; innovations in cursing by the children of Somerville, Massachusetts; and the antisocial uses of retail fitting rooms. But by far the most calls we've received this time -- and maybe in the whole life of the podcast -- revolve around Pam's admission that she made her own fake retainers as a kid, because lots and lots and LOTS of you did so too. 18 Jan 2022 | March 1989 Teen Life: Shyness, New Orleans & Period Myths | 00:56:11
We spend a lot of time talking about what Tara was doing in March 1989 -- at band camp for what would be the last time -- and then it's another jokefest about REGINA, perhaps because none of us is that excited about discussing a very long and journalistically very questionable article about "Young White Racists." But Karen's advice about "How To Ask The Time Without Hyperventilating" is nearly as contentious! Is it too casual about the struggles of social anxiety, or were (are?) two of your co-hosts maybe too self-conscious for their own good? We do our best to skip over John "Toe Story" Elder's latest piece of short fiction before getting into a surprisingly inaccurate Body Talk. Then we go On The Road to New Orleans; discuss why He Said He prefers older girls; debate whether It actually Happened To Me (seems like nah); dip a toe in Help (who or what is "Sore" THIS month?); and wrap it up with a past submitter repeating in Stuff You Wrote. And hey, did we mention that as of this issue Sassy is ONE YEAR OLD? This episode is our birthday gift...to you! 25 Jan 2022 | March 1989 Pop Culture: Surfing, Beaches & Unprepared Interviewers | 00:57:13
If there's one thread that runs through nearly all the pop cultural coverage of the March 1989 issue, it's writers acting like preparation is for nerds. Christina admits in a What Now item that she assumed U2 was an inspiration for The Go-Betweens when it was actually the other way around. Neill reviews Rain Man without knowing anything about it. Christina jumps in on the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise with its fourth installment. And Neill ends up with so little material for his Christina Applegate Q&A that he has to leave in "How are you?" -- yes, really. At least Eric Stoltz mixes things up by acting totally unprepared for the experience of getting interviewed, and comes off like a real turd. We discuss all of this in our latest podcast, for which -- if anything -- we might have OVERprepared. Your prom is going to be here before you know it, so the March issues of every magazine marketed to teen girls is going to be full of dress inspiration, and Sassy is no exception. 15 Feb 2022 | April 1989 Teen Life: Spring Break, Cliques & Bra Sizes | 01:02:35
The April 1989 issue is a little stripped-down -- no fiction, no quiz -- but still gives us lots to chew on. Catherine's profile of Andi, a teen addict, left us with a lot of questions. Laura Norton heads to a Yonkers high school to get close to its cliques. Christina and Jane's trip to spring break in Daytona Beach might not have gone into enough detail on a vacation that sounds like our worst nightmare. Body Talk leads us to our new favorite Las Vegas journalist. And there's also much to learn in Help, What He Said about dating a buddy's girlfriend, and a full page of Stuff You Wrote magic. 22 Feb 2022 | April 1989 Pop Culture: Debbie Gibson, Tiffany & Peter DeLuise | 00:55:39
Pop culture offerings are slimmed down this month -- everyone was tired after the big anniversary issue, perhaps! -- but there's still lots of What Now to discuss, from the death of Acid House to the Brady ladies to Axl Rose's tresses, and...everything in between? A remarkably effusive Watch It delivers four-star reviews to the likes of Criminal Law, The Return Of Swamp Thing, and Big Man On Campus, but no love for Earth Girls Are Easy. Opinions are divided on Listen Up's Hit (They Might Be Giants) and Bomb (Tiffany's sophomore album). And Pam tries to keep it together through our lone pop culture profile, of her one-time crush Peter DeLuise. Pause Electric Youth (just for now) and join us! 15 Mar 2022 | Special: TV Commercials Of May 1989 | 00:22:44
As poorly qualified as I am to uplift individuals and communities on a global scale to prescribe a course of action, I hope you will bear with me while I begin this sincere and earnest attempt. And please don’t get mad with me if, in doing so, I must rail against the pseudoscience that attempts—and continually fails—to prove that it is Major American Corporate Conglomerates’s moral imperative to sell us into a lifetime of servitude. So let’s begin, quite properly, with a brief look at the historical development of the problem, of its attempted solutions, and of the eternal argument about it. The overweening blathering of a furciferous, warped undesirable is more like it. In fact, as far as Major American Corporate Conglomerates is concerned, facts and evidence are subordinate to, and mediated by, a discourse. There are no right or wrong answers, just competitive discourses. If that’s the case, then perhaps Major American Corporate Conglomerates would like to explain why it disbelieves that if I try really, really hard, I can almost see why it would want to snuff out the last embers of courageousness burning within us. 29 Mar 2022 | May 1989 Pop Culture: Matthew, Deborah & Breathe | 00:44:24
The full complement of pop culture coverage returns for Sassy's May 1989 issue, PHEW. Following a What Now full of shrug items that read a lot like placeholders (what fell out?!), we're on to a very effusive Watch It, featuring Chances Are in the HIT slot and four-star reviews for Sing (not the one with animated animals) and Heathers. Listen Up vibes with Robyn Hitchcock and Elvis Costello's latest, Spike, but not even resident headbanger Laura could get on board with Skid Row's self-titled album. Matthew Sweet is our One To Watch, and then we close up with a profile of a very buttoned-up Debbie "Deborah" Gibson, and a set visit to a video remake (?) by Breathe. Let's just say it's a May tradition to do a spread on day-glo swimsuits and a spread on white garments, because we got both of those in the May 1988 issue, and here they are again! There's also a spread that's reggae in fashion form, lessons on how to use blush, and tips to reduce stress -- or at least its effect on your looks -- that have not all aged particularly well. We go in on denim styles and ad layout mistakes, debate whether hair brushing is right for everyone, and educate Dave about split ends. All this and more in our latest Fashion (Etc.) episode! You're not going to believe this, but the first feature of the July 1989 issue -- about getting through vacations with your family -- is not extremely depressing; it's merely somewhat worrisome if you read between the lines about maintaining harmony amongst everyone on the trip. In fact, there's hopefulness in all the features, which also include a visit to Navajo and Hopi girls on an Arizona reservation, and theories on why guys might say "no" to you. We also read the first- and second-place finishers in Sassy's first fiction contest; learn...very little about Las Vegas; find out how much importance Michael Stipe ascribes to every interaction Michael Stipe has ever had with every woman he's ever met; and lots more -- makes perfect listening for gazing at the Grand Canyon with your dad! The pop culture coverage of the July 1989 issue gets into a lot of different areas. The breakup of Johnny Depp's latest engagement? An offensive Guns N' Roses song? Censorship? A surprising amount of Ken Ober? What Now goes there! We also get reviews of Say Anything..., Road House, Boy George, and Julian Lennon, among many others. One To Watch tells us about Alex Désert, yet another young actor with a perfectly respectable character-actor career ahead of him. Our features tell us about Robert Downey Jr. (in his second profile in the magazine) and reggae (uh oh, Pam). How many calories in every hamburger McDonald's has ever sold? Was Booker the right career move for Richard Grieco? All this and more is covered in What Now. Watch it has, among others, a correct rating for Do The Right Thing and a wildly unfair rating for The Tall Guy. Listen Up finds us divided on The Ramones' "Pet Sematary," but united on 10,000 Maniacs. Dave agrees that Billy Zane is One To Watch, then protests the Ones To Watch. And we only have one pop culture feature this month, but when it's as memorable as Christina's sitdown with Charlie Sheen, that's all you need. 20 Sep 2022 | September 1989 Teen Life: This, This & That | 00:56:01
Time to go back to school (in 1989) with the Teen Life topics of the September issue! Catherine goes to Northern Ireland to report on The Troubles and gets real poetic about it. Christina relays tales of raging jealousy with the tiniest nod to more productive ways their subjects could have handled themselves. Your co-hosts are divided on "Grace," this month's fiction story. It Happened To Me's contributor shares her wisdom from an unsuccessful Remote Control tryout. The September 1989 issue gives us much to discuss in the world of pop culture. Is "well-gutted" a valid Sassy Glossary entry when "gutted" is just fine on its own? Should men pay for dates? How much can we discuss the TV adaptation of The Outsiders that won't be out for several months? How much baseline knowledge should a Gen Xer have about the Indigo Girls? How much worse is The Batman (2022) than Batman (1989)? How many of the All My Children stars Christina hung out with on set are still working on soaps today? What does it mean to call Paula Abdul "a people artist"? And so much more! We'll be GUTTED if you don't listen! Megan and Kim return to help us cover all the Teen Life topics of the November 1989 issue! After racing through the lead bummer feature about the passes rich white criminals get, we discuss some solid advice from Christina on what to do -- and, more importantly, what NOT to do -- when you get dumped. The winners of a photography contest surprise us with their competence. Some guys DON'T surprise us with their shallow thinking about whether women should be subject to a military draft. Sassy's first and only double issue kicks off with a classic bummer: the story of teenager Billy Rosebud, whose murder cops only bothered to look into after his own family spent years doing most of the investigating for them. From there, things lighten up, as Karen tells us what to expect from a gynecologist appointment, Christina walks us through a truly cathartic crying fit, and Mary Kaye attempts to help us save the planet. (Whoops.) Plus: a fiction story about a dad's hypocrisy (yes, we know, that's all fiction for teen girls); a stark warning about extended-wear contacts; the truth about hickeys, and much much more!

07 Mar 2023 | December 1989 Pop Culture: Billy, Björk & Trixie | 00:45:01
The pop culture topics of the December 1989/January 1990 issue fall into a few clear categories. Want to learn about age-appropriate boys? There are What Now items on Fred Savage and Jared Rushton. Want to get confused by feelings of horniness for unbelievably hot men? There's a shirtless Patrick Swayze and Billy Wirth, the latter apparently One To Watch. Want to be really mean about people who are wealthier and more powerful than you will ever be? There's a swipe at Cher for being old (at 43), and a WHOLE bunch of snark in the results of the entertainment poll -- including the magazine's editors snarking at YOU and your choices! We, however, think you're just great, so listen to what we have to say about all of the above, and more!

21 Mar 2023 | December 1989 Fashion Etc.: Sequins, Lucy & Cheap-Ass Christmas Gifts | 01:00:25
One decade's ending and another one's starting: maybe your old aesthetic should end and you should try out a new one? The December 1989/January 1990 double issue has some ideas! What if you dressed like Lucille Ball, or a crow? What if you glued sequins to a t-shirt, or your face? What if you gave yourself dreadlocks??? ...Actually, don't do that one. Elsewhere, readers are calling out fur that turns out to be faux; a feature writer keeps her job thanks to fax machines; and the whole staff is giving you Christmas presents that cost them absolutely nothing and that they didn't even edit. We've got LOTS to say about all of it!

18 Apr 2023 | February 1990 Teen Life: Divorce, Dude Defects & A New Sassiest Girl In America | 00:51:36
Thirteen months have gone by since Sassy crowned Rinnan its first Sassiest Girl In America, so it's time to pick a new one from a notably smaller field of finalists. Did we agree with the judges' choice? (Would we bring it up here if we did?) Catherine reports on a woman who was divorced before she was old enough to vote. Kim France makes her debut with a confusing piece on "dude defects." Karen tries her hand at fiction again. All this, plus What He Said about fantasy women, an It Happened To Me that's more It Happened To Dad, a Stuff You Wrote that inspires musical interpretation, and much much more!

02 May 2023 | February 1990 Pop Culture: Lenny Kravitz, Rap & Norwegian Skateboarders | 00:55:09
The February 1990 What Now claims to be a "Low-Venom Edition," then lashes out at Combos and Child's Play for no good reason on the very same page, so we're not sure what to believe. (We aren't going to "bail" on it, though we now know that's a slang term we could use if we did!) After we learn about Alyssa Milano's Japanese pop album, illicit Norwegian skateboard imports, and so much more, it's on to Watch It, where Courage Mountain (a Heidi take with Charlie Sheen, of all people) and The War Of The Roses get surprisingly good reviews, and Steel Magnolias gets one that's surprisingly mid?! Neill renews his Australian passport with a rave about Max Q, the self-titled Michael Hutchence side project début; we play you some so that you know Neill is wrong, as usual. One To Watch notches another one for the W column, and then Mike makes up a person who hates rap, gets mad at them, and tries to get them on board by profiling four positive artists. Which one sideswipes Public Enemy? The answer may surprise you! Listen and enjoy!

13 Jun 2023 | March 1990 Teen Life: One-Night Stands, Pick-Up Lines & Mother Teresa | 00:48:43
Sassy embarks upon its third year with a fun, kicky feature on a girl whose parents committed her to a mental institution for what sure seem like spurious reasons. Christina gets heteronormative about one-night-stands, starting with the assumption that you, a girl, might not want to have one. A list of the 20 coolest women hasn't aged well the whole way through (although "Mom" probably still rocks). All this plus another weird short story, Young MC abandoning his whole ethos to pretend he doesn't use pick-up lines, all the ginseng news you can handle, and much much more!

Sassy's second birthday coincides with prom, and this issue is on it, showing you how to get ready (with...a bodybuilding magazine?) and one ad full of Merry Go Round's weirdest dresses. There's also a great spread on Audrey Hepburn as a fashion muse, and a weird spread on environmentally conscious fashion that doesn't quite think things through. We're also learning which natural beauty products passed Sassy editors' testing, what Climax Springs is, and how friggin' many soap stars had their own 900 numbers in this era.
