07 Feb 2023Ep162 - Anthropomorphism00:45:23
  • Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics or behaviour to a god, animal, or object.
  • In dog training, it typically refers to attributing human emotions, behaviours, or characteristics onto our furry friends (perhaps, even, our "fur babies").
  • What are the potential consequences of this? A dog is not a human - treating them as such can have negative implications for the relationship between an owner and their dog.
  • Listen in as we open Pandora's box on this sometimes touchy subject!

03 Apr 2021Ep78 - Shelter Dogs: Unseen Variables in Their Training01:10:58
  • This week Panos and Luke answer and discuss questions from Saharai, who works at Napa County Animal Shelter and Adoption Centre, in California, USA.

  • The shelter receives all dogs of any calibre. There are many variables making that job difficult on many levels. Not only for caring, feeding and exercising them, but adopting a behavioural training system to help the dogs that need it the most unfortunately can be the most difficult yet critical for some dogs' adoptability.

  • Saharai sent in many questions. These regard how dog behaviour and training practices in such a stressful, high-demand and low-funded environments like shelters can be achievable and replicable.

  • Panos has had some experience in working day-to-day duties in an animal shelter for multiple years along with training volunteers, staff and the dogs of the shelter, which helped him to answer Saharai's questions.

  • Saharai shares some great content on Instagram of the cool things she does at the shelter. These include training, rehabilitation, enrichment, and showing her raw passion. Check her out on Insta at www.instagram.com/_wolfmother_

11 Mar 2022Ep123 - Don’t Touch my Dog! (Advocating for our animals when out in public)00:47:34
  • One of the most common questions that we as professional dog trainers get is, how should pet owners have "those" potentially uncomfortable conversations when it comes to strangers (dogs AND people) looking to interact with our dogs in public?
  • Many pet owners may feel "awkward" or "mean" for having to advocate for their dog's right to feel safe when they are out and about in the world
  • It is a total MYTH that stranger dogs should always be allowed to interact with one another, or that your dog should have to accept attention from any person they do not know
  • Panos & Luke break down the myriad of themes inside this pandora's box and give some practical tips on how to be the LEADER that your dog believes you to be!

  • This quality can directly affect our life with our dog literally.
  • Panos covers some common excuses he hears from dogs owners and how we can reduce the reasons of why we don't do what is necessary and take ownership of our duties.

29 Mar 2020Ep24 - What Dogs Have Taught Me (Four-Legged Therapists For People!)00:16:20

Taking a break from our usual Q&A episode, this week Panos sits down by himself to mull over what dogs have taught him in his many years of working alongside these majestic creatures. In these uncertain times that bring increased anxiety, dogs have the ability to take us out of our HEADS and bring us more into our BODIES. Anxiety is a fear of the unknown FUTURE - while dogs can bring us into the PRESENT!

We teach dogs to live in our society, while our dogs teach us to live in the now. Being present is a side effect to this understanding. Keeping up with routine with our dogs even though you can slip out of yours. If you have training goals with your dog, the ritual of training and practice is further strengthening your discipline with a new skill, project or goals of our own. Dogs are optimistic, and this encourages us to be more positive even when we feel down and out.

22 Mar 2020Ep23 - When & Why To Use Punishment00:48:19

This episode comes to you from Coronavirus quarantine! Luke has been unwell so we took precautions and recorded this remotely over the internet.

"Punishment" can be a highly controversial topic within the dog training industry. There can be serious animosity between the balanced and force-free communities. However the smart approach is to realise that both can learn from one another and meet in the middle.

Many terms can be misconstrued, but even putting a dog in "time out" or withholding pats counts as punishment! Many people who claim to never use punishment are very likely using it without acknowledging this...

Panos goes through many different examples and scenarios, drawing on his personal experiences of dog training to navigate this controversial but NECESSARY topic for your dog's long term wellbeing.

  • Panos & Luke discuss the roles genetics and environment (innate and learnt behaviour) play in what creates a behaviour, temperament and mindset.
  • Environment brings forth genetic expression and it's potential, this relates to type/level of drive, temperament, health, social behaviours, anxiety and aggression to name a few.
  • It's not only training that develops a behaviour, it is also the DNA of your dog.

09 Jan 2022Ep114 - Conditioned Relaxation00:41:03
  • In this week's episode we address our listener Roger's specific question that relates to conditioned relaxation.
  • This term means we establish a command, cue or context for a dog that puts a dog into a relaxed state of mind.
  • Examples could include the Crate, Specific Commands, Tethering, Rub down and many others.
  • Panos and Luke discuss how to achieve this, when to use it and other applications for daily life with your dog.

29 May 2022Ep132 - Dogs That Are Fussy Eaters00:12:51
  • If your dog is fussy, it is most likely caused by you and usually because you love your dog so much.
  • Panos sees fussy dogs regularly and shares some advice to help get your dog eating his food again.
  • Dogs are not grazing animals and should not have access to food all day long.
  • Stop feeding from scraps at dinner time etc.
  • Provide windows of opportunity for your dog to understand there is a time and place when food is available and after a set time the opportunity will go away.

  • Panos and Luke discuss the differences between working a dog from distance to a trigger, compared to flooding the dog with that stimulus.
  • Acknowledging that distance work is the preferred method for counter-conditioning to achieve desensitisation however living in the city may make this approach difficult.
  • Flooding can work really well for certain dogs, and preparing for the inevitable so owners know how to get out of a pickle may be a good idea.

  • Panos answers Aaron's question sent in via our Instagram:
  • "Luna has all of a sudden heard something in our building garage and elevator that sends her barking. She was well socialised to the carpark and elevator as she has been doing the same walk to and from the car since day one. If you on the podcast could discuss fixing a problem like this where a dog is guaranteed to bark in a certain situation and the steps you would take to rectify. Like how you would make use of treats and what to do when she starts barking (e.g make her sit). The bigger issue being we cannot avoid it as we need to go that way to get to car." -Aaron

05 Dec 2020Ep61 - Interviewing Alex Edwards of Refine Your Canine01:15:58

Panos had the opportunity to sit with Alex Edwards and discuss topics from Alex's socialisation classes, stories of his 5 dogs, how Covid has affected our dogs, Alex's journey abroad learning from some of the world's top dog trainers and much more.

Alex owns and runs Refine Your Canine Dog Training. He is a Melbourne based dog trainer with over 7 years experience.

Alex is very passionate about dogs and effective dog training. Proper dog training creates a special bond between the owner and the dog that enhances the experience of dog ownership. Alex has a special natural ability with dogs that can only come from a lifetime of dog ownership and a love of dogs.

Alex is a firm believer that training your dog should be fun and challenging. He believes that the dog should want to come back every time. The dog should feel that it has learned something, achieved something and also enjoyed the day. Dogs that train with Alex are testimony to this, many of them getting very excited when they know they are going to doggy school.

Alex specialises in time efficient dog training, focusing on getting the best results in the shortest time. So he uses time proven methods but leaves plenty of room for fun and innovation.

He is always looking for new ways of improving the experience and adding to the enjoyment of training sessions for both owner and for the dog. He has dog training programs for basic to advanced dogs, from puppies to adult.

01 Aug 2020Ep42 - When The Sh*t Hits The Fan (What is Single-Event Learning?)00:53:00

This week we discuss how one bad experience for your dog can throw things off - even to the best of us. It's called life. Being an experienced dog trainer doesn't preclude you from ending up in unforeseen circumstances.

Panos talks about a recent incident where a dog attacked Nuki & Spades due to the poor management of the attacking dog's owners. We are always going on about good management! But you can't rely on management when it comes to other dog owners.

The consequences of such incidents are referred to as single-event learning in dog training. This can refer to both good and bad experiences. Having built a solid training foundation helps them bounce back from potentially long-lasting negative effects.

We cover the importance of having a plan for desensitisation and how to move forward when the sh*t hits the fan!

02 Jan 2021Ep65 - What Dogs Have Taught Panos in 202000:17:23

Happy New Year to all our listeners!

Panos reflects on his lessons of the year. It has been a wild year personally, professionally and globally.

The reason why Panos has dogs and dedicates himself to dog training is that dogs complement our lives, and should not complicate them.

He wants owners to learn from their dogs just as much as we teach them.

Remain disciplined, maintain what we already have before adding more, and having structure but switching up routines.

07 Nov 2020Ep57 - Interviewing Brent Dry of The K9 Company01:26:46

Brent Dry is passionate about working with people to get the best out of their dog in whatever they are working on. Teaching clients how their dogs learn and why they are behaving in a particular manner is a role that he truly enjoys.

When working with clients, Brent likes to empower them with the knowledge of how their dogs perceive their world.

Brent loves the people he's in contact with everyday through his business and he aims to give them everything he can each time they are in a class. I also love mentoring students who are studying to become dog trainers themselves. Giving back to these keen people gives him so much satisfaction.

Professionally training since 2008, Brent and his wife Cat have had many dogs including Rottweiler’s, and they now have a Belgian Malinois called Zia. They love learning new techniques to train and different ways to motivate dogs.

You can find The K9 Company at www.thek9company.com.au where you'll also find Brent's new video course - great for remote learning during Covid-19.

18 Sep 2023Ep188 - Why your dog should ”need” to rest00:14:08
  • Instead of thinking your dog needs to be trained to learn how to behave appropriately, which is true, however your dog should be tired enough that he needs to rest.
  • Physical exercise is important for active dogs, your job is to ensure your dog has the appropriate output during their day so that when it's time to rest, they rest.
  • Being bored is a good thing for a dog to learn to experience. To wait and relax, ready for another day of activity.
