The degree of complexity in relationship dynamics is exponential in non-monogamy. We explore cultivating relationships from both the swinging perspective and polyamorous perspective. Ginger feels ready to get out there and meet some women to date. One of the most important parts of communication when it comes to sexy time, is learning to ask for what you want, so we discuss that in today's episode of Life on the Swingset, along with Dr. Liz Powell, Mike Joseph, Cooper, and Dylan.

Dr. Liz starts out stating that there's an assumption of wanting to respect what we think someone else wants, and that we make the assumption that "asking for what I want may negatively affect their experience". Cooper asks if Dylan has this problem because he's trying not to be selfish, Dylan suspects that's the case.

Mike Joseph mentions that homosexual sex (especially the top vs. bottom negotiation) by default has more communication than heterosexual sex. Dr. Liz comments that women that have sex with women also have a ton more conversations, and that people who consider themselves sex geeks or sex educators really bump up the level of conversation and negotiation that goes into sex.

While Dylan explains how sometimes, when about to play with someone who has a large tool kit / is well skilled at communication, he likes to get an initial yes to exploration and chart the path forward in the moment, listening to non-language verbal cues, and body response. Mike Joseph mentions that it sounds like a recipe for uncertainty and anxiety, so Dylan talks his way through a play session with someone that's willing an open. Mike discovers that being inside someone often elicits all sorts of non-verbal responses. *grin*

Cooper mentions that sometimes, in the run up to a party or play session, it's easy to fire away a thought via instant messenger and walk away, it makes it easy to ask for something without necessarily needing feedback right away.

Dr. Liz mentions the mildest and wildest activity that many people use at the beginning of play parties and Dylan mentions that even though he uses it, tt never quite "feels" right.

“The way I’ve always seen that exercise (mildest and wildest) is that it tells you where the buffet starts and ends. It doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be able to get any specific dish on the buffet.”

Dr. Liz also mentions that the mildest and wildest activity helps her check-in with herself, and that it's a way of conveying a range of options, not necessarily a set destination, describing it as the beginning and the end of a buffet.

The conversation moves to being awkward about starting conversation. Dr. Liz mentions she has a formula.

"What I tell people is one of the most effective ways to start a conversation, is by sharing something you’re feeling about having that conversation. You're leading with your softness instead of leading with your hardness."

Happy New Year everyone!

2013 was a year filled with pain, regret, and some amazing time spend with wonderful people, fans, and at fantastic venues and conventions. 2014 is on course to be a much better year for those of us on the Swingset. We all got together (Cooper, Dylan,  Shira, and Miko) to discuss our hopes and our projects for this new year. Dylan seems to spout out a new resolution every five minutes, between hitting the clubs more, getting larger Chicago based groups of people together for club takeovers and discussion groups and *gasp* potlucks, he also asks that everyone contribute clips of the show to us so we can put together a Simpsons style episode 138 spectacular! Shira discusses wanting to better date women and offers that us swingers will be demanding gluten free meals soon. Miko wants to get her swing on more and all in all create more space and time to enjoy people. Cooper's cracking the whip and preparing everyone to write books and more importantly to him, step back from his efforts to develop polyamorous relationships and to better enjoy the wonderful world of swinging.

He's coming back home people. :)

Midway through Life on the Swingset's second annual trip to Desire Resort & Spa in Cancun, Dylan, Ginger, & Cooper sat down with many of the tour guests to record a silly podcast reflecting on the trip so far, and what lifestyle vacations can be. There's a drinking game, there's guests talking about what Desire means to them, there's Dylan and Cooper squaring off the way they always seem to do in person, and there's Ginger continuing to be the heart and soul of the Swingset. Question 1:

Great podcast, I enjoy listening to you guys. My boyfriend and I are in an open relationship and it is going very well. My question is about dental dams, he and I don't use condoms when together but we always do with other people. He tried giving me oral using a dental dam just as an experiment and honestly I felt absolutely nothing :( most people don't use them i assume for exactly that reason. At least with condom the man still feels sensation although it's decreased comparing it to dental dam where one feels absolutely nothing, I barely felt he was down there lol. I know giving and receiving oral without a barrier is not the safest specially if involved in this lifestyle but when dental dam sucks so much what other alternatives are there to encourage it's usage. Could it be the brand of dental dam I used? Are there better brands out there that might be a little better.

Just started listening to your podcast and my husband and I are interested in adventuring into this fun world. We visited a sex club not too far away and we had a fun evening together, but it seemed like we were more adventurous than most of the other couples there that night. For the cost of being there, I wondered if we would be able to connect with other couples interested in setting up our own sexual adventure night at a very nice hotel. Am I being naive or is this a possibility? What are your thoughts with your experiences on this? We are open to engaging with others in our sexual play and with other couples.

We continue our debrief from our experience at Open SF Non-Monogamy Conference. We discuss seminars we attended, including Charlie Glickman, Tristan Taormino, and the presentation we gave. Cooper gets a magic brownie and tries to pick up a Brown-Eyed Girl, and talks about how incredibly charming The Professor is. The gang goes on a San Francisco odyssey to find a hot-tub in the hills, and Dylan gets a girl.

There are few acts in the pantheon of sexuality that carry with them so much intrigue, coveting, and fear, as double penetration, and its more advanced siblings double vaginal and double anal. For one thing, these really can't be done in a monogamous relationship. Oh sure, we can use dildos and such things, but that's not really where the intrigue lies, does it? We discuss double penetration or "DP" in its many forms and talk other varsity level sexual moves.

The two most non-"how do I start swinging" questions we get on the Swingset is how do you organize your sex toys and how do you travel with sex toy, so we go in depth with advice and suggestions on what to do with your growing piles of sexy at your own house and on the road.

Recently, our own United States of America had a watershed moment. An injustice so deeply ingrained into what we've called society, what we've called family, what we've called "real and respectable” with one fell swoop, became righted as a matter of not just public policy, but as law.

The Supreme Court's decision on Obergefell v. Hodges granted marriage equality for all persons, and while the rest of the country's legal structure catches up to the new reality, we're seeing a vocal minority of polyamorous people... and a surprising amount of popular media address the possibility of multiple partner marriage… Poly marriage.

We welcome Cunning Minx back to the Swingset, where she and Dylan step on their soap boxes and bring up Justice Roberts’ dissent’s thoughts on a plural marriage slippery slope, Justice Kennedy’s majority opinion based on fundamental rights instead of the expected equal protection.
