057. Valentine's edition: So you think you LOVE sugar?
00:31:32
Do you love sugar?
I certainly used to! Sugar in all its forms: chocolate, desserts, ice cream, cookies, as well as bread and pasta.
But then when I stopped eating sugar, I realized that... well, maybe it wasn't really love!
In this special Valentine's edition, I encourage you to question whether the relationship you have with sugar is really "love". Maybe it is. Or maybe you do what I used to do, and you USE sugar for all sorts of reasons: to soothe your emotions, as a stress reliever, as a coping mechanism, as a way to celebrate...
Is it really love when what you love is actually hurting you?
That's what this episode is all about. I hope you love it. :-)

058: "I just couldn't stop, I was so ashamed": Zippi
00:41:38
Zippi says that she was born with a "fatal attraction" to sugar. No amount of sugar was enough for her. When she moved to Israel and became a nurse, she knew all the theory and the caloric value of different foods. So, as a nurse, the problem wasn't the knowledge. She knew what to do. The problem was applying that knowledge. She felt so ashamed, like something was seriously wrong with her, because she wanted to eat healthy, she wanted to lose weight, but she was doing exactly the opposite. It harmed her self-esteem and her self-image. When Zippi realized that she was addicted to food - more specifically junk food - it was like a light went on. With the help of a 12-step program, Zippi got the type of support and help she needed. For the first time in her life she started abstaining from sugar a white flour. Her recovery had started. She started losing weight without feeling like she was on a diet. With her experience and knowledge, she researched the science behind food addiction and became a food addiction counsellor. Now Zippi helps food addicts in Israel who eat kosher with her science-based educational program. Find Zippi here: https://www.facebook.com/zippilivneh/

059: "Now with fasting and real foods, I have an off switch!": Allison
01:01:06
Allison would eat to cope with all her emotions. Primarily highly processed foods made from flour and sugar (bread was her thing!), especially crunchy and salty. By the time she was in her 20s, she was morbidly obese. She tried and tried to control her weight, but she never really made the connection that it was because of certain types of foods (sugar + flour). She had a gastric bypass and lost some weight, but after a while it started creeping back up again. When Allison discovered intermittent fasting, she thought she had to eat keto (which doesn't suit her). But then when she did some more research, she discovered that clean fasting was the key for her. So she stopped diet soda and sweeteners cold turkey, and then fasting and weight loss became much easier. The last frontier was when she cut processed foods and started eating real, whole foods. That's when she could feel herself getting full and she finally found the "off switch" for her eating behaviour. Find Allison here: https://yourifcoach.com/

060. "My fasts got easier the less sugar I ate": Emily
00:32:37
Emily Harveaux's childhood was filled with sugar and sweet treats. From a very young age, she associated comfort and warmth with candy (like most of us!).
Over her lifetime Emily says that she has run the gamut of sizes as well as her relationship with food and disordered eating. Sugar was definitely part of it.
Her weight has fluctuated a lot: as much as 300lbs at one point. Now she's about 150lbs.
She always thought that sugar would always be part of her life. But it's only in the last couple of years that she has come to the realization that maybe she's done with sugar.
4 years ago, Emily discovered intermittent fasting. It helped her get her head straight about food. And it helped her understand which foods were better for her body. For her, fasting is listening. She learned to listen to her body and her real needs. She also discovered that the less sugar she ate, the easier fasting became.
And she discovered that a more meat-based (carnivore) diet, including no sugar, made her feel the best.

061. "I wanted to make food that could heal me": Chef AJ
00:40:55
Chef AJ considers sugar was a drug for her. For the first 43 years of her life, she says that she was addicted to sugar and caffeine. She needed sugar to function.
But in general, the medical profession doesn't really recognize sugar addiction, so her need for massive amounts of sugar was left unchecked.
Not only was she overweight, but she also developed signs of pre-colon cancer. As a vegan, this wasn't being caused by animal products... but by the fact that she wasn't eating FOOD. When she got her diagnosis at the age of 43, she realized just how serious her addiction to this cheap, available and socially accepted this sugar "drug" is.
Listen to Chef AJ's inspiring story of how she went from not even being able to get out of bed and needing her sugar "fix" to finding freedom from her addictive behaviour.

062. "I feel better in my 40s than I did in my 20s": Dr. Diane
00:40:58
Dr. Diane Mueller is a functional doctor. She's passionate about helping others restore their health and passion for life. Just like many of her patients, Dr. Diane struggled with chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, migraines, extreme digestive dysfunction and chronic pain for many years. Conventional medicine, for her, was not enough.
In this episode, Dr. Diane tells how she was lucky enough in naturopathic medical school to learn about the science of the long-term harmful effects of sugar. In her own life, in 9th grade her running coach influenced her to notice that she performed much better when she wasn't consuming sugar, especially in athletics.
For years, she felt that nobody took her symptoms seriously because her lab tests came back normal. She decided to study naturopathic medicine in order to figure out why she was feeling so bad. She wanted to learn what is going on when our lab tests are normal but we still feel extremely ill. Listen to her inspiring story and to how she's helping her patients now.
Dr. Diane's journey to heal herself lead her to complete two doctorate degrees in holistic health care. She has a Doctorate degree in Naturopathic Medicine as well as a Doctorate degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. In addition, she is certified in functional medicine.

063. "If it's good for Netta, I'll give it a try": Marcia (my mum!)
00:41:12
Today's episode is a tribute to my lovely mum, Marcia, especially as it's Mother's Day in the UK (March 27, 2022).
My mum's in her mid-70s and she tells how in 2015 when I first told her that I'd cut sugar and flour and how great I was feeling, it piqued her interest to try it too!
She'd been struggling with several health issues, and even though she recognized that eating less sugar made sense, the idea of cutting flour-based foods like bread, pastries and muesli was amazing to her. She says that she thought she was healthy, but she didn't feel it in her body.
So she asked me to send her some info, which I did and which she read. And then she decided to give it a try!
Listen to my mum's amazing discoveries and transformation in her health when she cut sugar and "stodge" (bread, pasta, pastries, rice, puddings). Not only did her digestion improve, but she had more energy and she never felt hungry. She lost the extra pounds that were making her uncomfortable, learned to navigate her way gracefully in social situations and on trips, and generally felt better!
Even if we live thousands of miles apart, "Life After Sugar" has brought us closer. My mum helps me with the tech side of my website too. Visit it here: https://aftersugarclub.com/

064. Listener question: What about monk fruit and stevia?
00:16:02
A listener recently asked me to talk about sweeteners, specifically monk fruit and stevia.
Disclaimer: I don't use either of these sweeteners... but this isn't about me! ;-)
In this episode I talk about my take on these two sweeteners. I invite you to ask yourself these questions (with no judgement, just gentle curiosity):
why am I choosing products that are sweeter than sugar?
why am I looking for sweet tastes?
what is my relationship with sweet tastes?
what other tastes can I learn to enjoy?
what is my behaviour like around sweeteners and sweet foods?
can you imagine what freedom from sugar (or sweeteners) could feel like for you?
is there any sweetness that you feel is missing in your life?
There are no wrong answers!
Plus you have my full permission to choose whatever you want to eat, including sweeteners. (P.S. It's not up to me to give you permission for anything!)

065. "I thought my problem was food, but in fact it was sugar": Alicia
00:51:49
From a young age, food had always seduced Alicia. As an example, she remembers in the 80s looking forward to going out to a Chinese restaurant. She would fantasize all day about the food, then devour everything in sight until she felt sick.
Now she realizes that it was specifically sugar that led her to overconsume.
As a sporty child and teenager, Alicia began training as a competitive swimmer. She was able to eat vast quantities of food because she needed so much fuel. But this also perpetuated her unhealthy behaviour around food and led to overeating.
When she was 17, Alicia decided to take a break from competitive swimming and concentrate on her studies... and that's when she says she "ran into trouble". She realized that she didn't know how to moderate her food intake. It was almost like a drug to her.
Listen to Alicia's inspiring story about how she became so much more aware of her real hunger and satiety signals, her compulsive behaviour around food (like bingeing), and how she changed her relationship with certain types of food (including sugar). You can find Alicia here: http://www.aliciamking.com

066: Listener question: What do you eat in a day?
00:29:57
"Netta, what do you eat in a day?"
In this episode, I give you the answer, as well as examples of my meals.
When I first cut sugar and flour back in 2015, I was given a list of whole foods to help me. I realized that I didn't really know what "whole foods" were, and that my whole definition of "food" needed to change. So I started reading. I read dozens of books. Not just about sugar, but about how the food industry has got us consumers believing that their manufactured and engineered "products" are food... and that food can only be "fun" if it has sugar in it!
In this episode, I share author Robb Wolf's "food matrix" where he gives a simple way of creating hundreds (even thousands!) of combinations with unprocessed proteins, fats, vegetables, and herbs and spices.
I use his approach to make my family meals, so that I never run out of ideas. When I took sweet and starchy foods off my plate in 2015, the strangest thing happened: I realized that I wasn't getting hungry as often. That's why intermittent fasting came easily and naturally for me.
I hope this episode helps to inspire you that real foods are anything but "boring" or repetitive, and that eating yummy nutritious meals fits perfectly with an intermittent fasting lifestyle.

067. "Now I can focus on the positive in my life": Alison
00:43:50
As a busy professional in New York, Alison followed all the healthy eating advice: she was vegetarian, ate lots of smoothie bowls and salads (all takeout!)... but she was still suffering from all kinds of symptoms and health issues. In her mid-20s, she felt like her life was crashing down on her.
She was on medication for PCOS, her hair was falling out, she had dermatitis and food sensitivities, her hormones were a wreck and her periods were painful, her digestion was terrible... That was the wake-up call for Alison.
She could no longer normalize all her symptoms. She had to do something.
Listen to how Alison took action to address not just her symptoms, but their root cause. It wasn't a smooth journey, but it did push her to change her career and become a holistic nutritionist so that she could help her family, herself, and others. She invested in her health and was able to finally heal.
Alison is the author of the book "The Paleo Gut Healing Cookbook" and the creator of Food By Mars. Find Alison here: https://foodbymars.com/

069: "Now I'm free from pain and inflammation": Kate
00:43:17
When Kate's brother passed away in his 40s from cancer, Kate felt so powerless. The acute stress triggered a physical response in her body, and her work and lifestyle made it worse. She was eating more and more processed foods... and of course, sugar!
Her joint pain, swelling and brain fog got so bad that she went to see her doctor. He sent her for some tests, but the symptoms continued.
So Kate decided to do some research herself. She discovered the auto-immune protocol (AIP), which removes potentially inflammatory foods such as grains, dairy and legumes. And sugar of course, which is one of the most inflammatory foods.
Within days, Kate started to feel better: her joints stopped aching, her swelling went down, and her brain fog cleared. It was amazing! She felt much better... but she also had to re-learn how to cook with non-inflammatory ingredients. So she started to create new recipes and now she's a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, a Certified AIP Coach, a Certified Gluten Practitioner, a trained Chef and a cookbook author.

070: 5 mistakes people make when they want to reduce sugar (Pt 1)
00:22:34
In my experience, a lot of people make some or all of these 5 mistakes when they want to reduce sugar.
In this episode, I talk about the first 2 mistakes:
1. Not respecting your natural personality. Here's the thing: If you respect who you are and how you already live your life, cutting sugar can be far more sustainable. You don't have to be like anyone else, and others don't need to be like you. And you certainly don't need to be like me!
2. Giving sugar a meaning. Sugar is an inanimate object. It doesn't have a personality, it doesn't have a moral value. It's not "good" or "bad" and it doesn't want to do you any harm or any good. We give it a meaning, and therefore we also have the power to change what it represents for us.

071. 5 mistakes people make when they want to reduce sugar (Pt 2)
00:22:36
This is Part 2, continued from Episode 70, about the 5 mistakes people make when they want to reduce sugar.
Mistake #3: Replacing sugar with other types of sweeteners, or recreating desserts and similar "treats". It's fine for a transition period, but in the long term it might prevent you from making a real, deep, lasting change.
Mistake #4: Feeding your cravings. I get it: when you're in the middle of having a craving, it can feel so overwhelming! You may feel totally powerless. Your internal mental chatter is SO strong... But it is actually possible to change not just the foods that feed your cravings, but also what you say to yourself when those cravings happen. And the irony is that when you don't feed those cravings, they go away!
Mistake #5: Not taking action. "Oh, I'll start on Monday!"... or "I'm not ready"... "I can do this on my own, I don't need you to help me!"... "I can have a cheat day/meal"...

072: "Intermittent fasting helped me to quit sugar": Lucie
00:46:59
Lucie found out that she's a Type 1 diabetic when she was 17. That means that the beta cells in her pancreas don't produce insulin. She had to go to the hospital where she was given insulin and told that she was insulin-dependent for the rest of her life. She felt scared and discouraged.
Back when Lucie was diagnosed, the test strips to measure her blood sugars (A1C) weren't as sensitive as they are now. Every quarter she would get her A1C checked and pick up a new prescription.
When she was diagnosed, nobody really talked to Lucy about diet. However, her parents took her to see a naturopathic doctor who advised her to lower her carbs, but it was difficult for her as a 17-year-old to maintain. The list of foods she received was based on the glycemic index (rather than the glycemic load) of specific foods.
She tried all kinds of ways of eating in order to keep her insulin needs stable, but the general message she understood as a Type 1 diabetic was: eat whatever you want, and let the insulin shots cover it. Her health care providers often cited "non-compliance" as a reason for this approach.
Listen to how Lucie became her own walking science experiment and switched to foods that nourish her without spiking her blood sugar. Plus find out how she discovered intermittent fasting and how it changed her life... and helped her cut sugar!

073. Raising kids with less sugar
00:58:59
This episode is a recording of a live video I did in May 2022 on the Life After Sugar Facebook page, with my friend Michelle Montone. I know that a lot of parents and grandparents listen to this podcast, and both Michelle and I are moms, so we decided to talk about the challenges of raising kids with less sugar.
You'll get some great insights from our personal experiences, as well as tips for lunches, snacks, phases, desserts, and dealing with "picky" eaters.
We also talk about being role models for our kids (which doesn't include being perfect!).
And for more guidance, support, and accountability to help you let go of sugar so that your intermittent fasting lifestyle becomes easy and natural, become a member of the After Sugar Club here!

074. Listener request: The marketing and advertising of sugar
00:28:18
This episode comes from a request from a listener who asked me to talk about how advertising from the sugar industry has made us believe that sugar is a good source of energy... a necessary part of our daily diet... natural... an appetite suppressant(!) and a way to lose weight(!!)...
There are the ads from the 50s, 60s and 70s for example, where sugar was marketed as a healthy substance that would curb hunger and provide an energy boost. Of course, we know different now!
Why did sugar and its substitutes even need advertising? Well, one reason was that sugar was rationed during the Second World War, and the sugar industry needed to do something about that type of restriction so that they could get more sales.
Today, we know that sugar is unhealthy and its advertising has been shown to be deceptive. But the sugar industry is now joined by the sweetener industry, especially for keto sweeteners, to convince consumers that their products are pure and healthy... and that we need them in our lives.
And for more guidance, support, and accountability to help you let go of sugar so that your intermittent fasting lifestyle becomes easy and natural, become a member of the After Sugar Club here!

078. "Cutting sugar helped with my IBS, SIBO, and auto-immune issues": Phoebe
00:42:18
Phoebe Lapine knows all about irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)... and sugar!
Phoebe is the author of SIBO Made Simple, which is a must-read not just for those suffering from unwanted GI symptoms, but anyone looking to improve their gut health without sacrificing delicious food.
In this episode, Phoebe talks about her health issues, including the auto-immune disease Hashimoto's thyroiditis and its symptoms. It caused her to have a horrible skin rash, fatigue, unhealthy weight loss, disturbed digestion... Eventually she went to see a holistic practitioner and started to do an elimination diet, starting with one month excluding gluten, caffeine, alcohol... and added sugars.
After 10 years of chronic issues, Phoebe's symptoms improved dramatically. Her liver healed, her skin cleared up, her inflammation went down which meant that her auto-immune issues improved. Amazing!
Phoebe tells her inspiring story in this episode and in her book The Wellness Project.

076. Gentle rant: Are you even listening??
00:31:55
Oh I know you're listening, dear listener!
But this is a gentle rant about the intuitive eating (IE) approach. When I first found out about IE, I was so happy! I thought I'd found "my" people! Intuitive eating is all about rejecting the diet mentality, honouring your hunger, making peace with food, not restricting or obsessing, and not using food to fill your emotional needs.
The IE approach really resonated with me when I first discovered it, so I reached out to several IE experts and invited them to be on my podcast.
Imagine my dismay when every single one of them turned me down.

075. "Fermented foods changed my health and my life!": Donna
00:49:49
Donna Schwenk first discovered the power of fermented foods when she was 41. She had just given birth to her third child prematurely, and in this episode she tells her story of how cultured (fermented) foods changed her life!
Donna tells how her body was shutting down. She had several health issues, including high blood pressure and gestational diabetes that came back as T2 diabetes several months later. She wanted to be healthy and be there to see her daughter grow up.
One day she came across information about kefir. She started making it and she would give her daughter a teaspoon of it every day. In a short time, all her daughter's preemie health issues went away.
Donna was also drinking kefir, and she started feeling so much better! So she started researching it and understanding the trillions of bacteria that live inside us... and sharing what she learned!
In this episode, Donna tells how she started making and consuming more types of cultured foods and drinks, and helping others to create wellness, including her daughter's.

077: "I felt like I couldn't survive much longer": Jan
00:50:31
Jan Steele found out that she's celiac early on in life.
The transition to a gluten free diet was done by her mother because Jan was a child. Because she grew up with celiac disease, and because of the immediate physical reaction she had whenever she did eat gluten, her gluten-free habits became second nature.
When pregnancy and the exhaustion of having small children made her auto-immune issues flare up again, Jan became motivated to look after herself as a mother so that she could be there for her children.
She started with the GAPS diet (Gut and Psychology Syndrome), and the fog started to lift. As she started to feel better, she felt more motivated. She focused on real, whole foods.
De facto, she also eliminated sugar.
Everything started to get better, especially less inflammation. Listen to the inspiring story of how Jan educated herself and turned her health around.
Today, as a Nutritional therapy Consultant, Jan helps people learn to harness the power of real food, to feel better. Jan's B&B is in the beautiful Cévenne mountains, near Montpellier (France). She hosts people for holidays, allowing them to discover this beautiful region while, at the same time, ensuring that their food restrictions and sensitivities are respected to a T.

00:49:00
Natalie Speakman was a teenage drug addict and alcoholic. She got clean and sober when she was 22 years old, but continued to smoke cigarettes for 18 months after. And then her food and sugar consumption went way up.
In this episode Natalie tells how she remembers that eating sugar made her feel "high" and gave her a shift in her mood. For years after she got sober, she used to eat desserts and sugar alone every night. The thing is, Natalie was very health conscious... but she was still eating lots of sugar.
After 20 years of sugar addiction, Natalie decided to stop eating sugar, one day at a time. She tells about her recovery journey and her struggles with cravings and repetitive Day 1s.

081. “For me, less sugar and fasting are forms of self-care": Michelle
00:43:47
When Michelle was in her 30s, she got gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with her second child. She had to change her diet and she felt restricted, so after she had the baby and was told that she could eat "normally" again, she went bonkers! She would buy dozens of candy bars, eat them, and hide the wrappers. She felt so ashamed.
At 5 feet 3 inches Michelle reached 200lbs. She felt heavy, physically and mentally. She felt lost. She had pain and flare-ups in her neck and back, migraines... it was hard. And she says that the sugar and processed foods she was consuming made every day more difficult.
Michelle was never allowed sugar as a child by her "health nut" mother (her words), so she felt deprived. She feels today that it's a difficult balancing act between feelings of deprivation and dependency.
When her youngest child was about 2.5, Michelle was using calorie cutting and exercise to lose weight, but it wasn't really working. After her wellness appointment with her doctor, she made a decision to do something different.
She overheard somebody talking about intermittent fasting (IF). It sounded crazy to her! But then she did some research about it and discovered Gin Stephen's books. On January 24, 2020, Michelle started intermittent fasting. She started with a 14-hour fasting time, which was amazing because she'd been used to snacking all the time. After about 3 months, she was clean fasting 18 hours a day. In this episode, Michelle tells how her life and her health were transformed by IF.
Now Michelle enjoys non-food ways to practice self-care, including intermittent fasting.

085. You can't fail at your life after sugar!
00:21:52
I know a thing or two about failing - I've been a teacher for 30 years! But I'm not talking about passing or failing exams here.
This episode is about the feeling of failure many of us have had in the past, about our weight especially. And I blame the diet industry for manufacturing this fear of failure!
It was only when I stopped eating sugar in July 2015 that I was able to step out of this pass-fail mentality. And I created my own reality!
Fear of failure is natural when we risk doing something new - that's what learning is all about. But if we let go of an all-or-nothing perfectionist approach, and accept that the learning process (and life in general!) is IMperfect... then there is no failure!
"You can't fail - you can only learn". That's the message in this episode!

086. "Now I enjoy cooking with real, whole foods": Annie
00:43:29
Annie chose to be vegetarian early on in her life, but unfortunately she ate a lot of processed grains rather than fruit and vegetables. She admits that she didn't really know what to focus on at that time.
"My body never felt great and my mind never really felt great", Annie told me.
It took several years of figuring out which way of eating worked for her. She tried several diets, including the keto diet which is heavy on fats and meat, with very little sugar.
Living in Wisconsin, Annie gradually became involved in local food systems, farming, and gardening. Her focus shifted to foods that could be grown and sourced locally, which naturally led to a more plant-based diet (although it still includes some meat).
Annie's learning about what makes her body feel good - and whole foods are a big part of that. And during the pandemic, like many people, Annie found that cooking at home became a bigger part of her life. But a lot of online recipes are buried in pop-ups and ads and long text, which made it frustrating to use them.
So Annie created https://recip.ly/, which is the first ad-free subscription-based recipe platform that is equitable to small creators. Bloggers and recipe developers submit their content to the platform, and get paid on a per-view basis of their recipe. Users can access unlimited recipes with zero distractions, ads, or popups on a subscription basis.
Listen to Annie's inspiring story of cutting sugar naturally through adopting a whole foods diet, and how you can use https://recip.ly/ to get all the recipes you need!

087. "Cutting sugar made me stop craving it": Gabrielle
00:45:12
Gabrielle had leukemia as a very young child. But it wasn't until her 20s that she started to realize what some of the long term effects of chemotherapy were.
Gabrielle tells how during her younger years, her lack of knowledge about nutrition did her a disservice. Up to her her mid 20s, she'd been following the classic American diet. And she started having weight issues, even though she exercised a lot. It turns out that studies are showing that a lot of young children who had cancer are more likely to be obese.
Gabrielle says that she followed terrible dietary advice. For example, she was consuming a high amount of dairy... including drinking large amounts of milk. And she often ate ice cream. And cheese. For Gabrielle and her brother, dairy gave them physical symptoms. So she cut milk, gradually... and after about 3 months she stopped craving it. For Gabrielle, gradually replacing dairy products (and other types of foods) means she can moderate them now.
Once she was in her mid 20s, she started to learn more about functional nutrition, and adopted a more holistic approach to her health. She recognizes that the sugary foods she was hooked on as a child were the hardest to cut as an adult. But she learned to cut certain foods (and behaviours) that weren't benefitting her. 088. "Now sugar is non-negotiable for me": Scott
00:43:10
Sugar was a reward during Scott's childhood. And as a result, Scott was overweight as a child, and his mother put him on all kinds of diets. He felt like a disappointment at weigh-ins. It was a struggle to keep his weight down most of his life.
As he grew up, his mental framework was that sugar was a treat... it was fun and enjoyable and decadent.
But he also wondered: Why is something that tastes so good also so bad for me?
Plus he saw that sugar's in everything. It felt very confusing.
Then he made an important switch. Sugar became non-negotiable. And yoga became an integral part of his life.
Listen to Scott's inspiring story of how he made the switch to a whole foods diet and a mindful approach to his food, his yoga practice, and his life.

092. Sugar and my infertility journey: Robyn
00:54:41
Robyn and I are friends and we share something that I kind of wish we didn't: our long and difficult struggle with infertility.
In this episode, Robyn tells about her childhood in the 80s and her eating habits. She also talks about how later in life she discovered a love for food and cooking.
In her early 30s, Robyn and her husband tried unsuccessfully to have a baby. It was a difficult and frustrating journey. Five years later, after a break, they tried again with IVF and it worked first time! Now they have a beautiful daughter.
That experience motivated Robyn to become a holistic health coach specializing in women's fertility. She helps couples find natural ways to put the chances in their favour for getting pregnant, including cutting sugar.
Sugar has been shown to be instrumental in hormonal imbalances, insulin resistance, PCOS, and lower conception rates. Listen to this candid conversation about Robyn's journey with infertility... and sugar.

In this episode, I'm talking with Lauren Bryson, who's a cooking instructor for kids, Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition and host of the Go Play in the Dirt Podcast.
Lauren specializes in digestive wellness, the microbiome, autoimmune conditions and the gut-brain connection.
And she also teaches kids how to cook with real whole foods! (ie: NOT sugar...)
When I first started my sugar free life back in 2015, my child was 7. I was worried about what kind of role model I was being as a mother, and whether I was setting a good example for her. But you know what? Reducing or cutting sugar was one of the best things you can do for your kids! Because as Lauren says, you can also create new habits, like finding recipes and cooking together.

095. "With low carb, I actually look forward to my meals": Nicola
00:41:36
Nicola grew up in the 70s and 80s, and says that she doesn't remember food being an issue during her childhood. She wasn't overweight as a child.
In her 20s and 30s, once she had her own money, all she wanted to do was to buy the food that was available at the canteen at the hospital where she worked. She also had the attitude that if she needed to lose weight, she would crash diet.
It was all about the number on the scale, not about being healthy, says Nicola.
Then in her mid-30s when she stopped smoking, her weight really started to go up... even though she was eating low-fat.
But all those low-fat products were full of sugar! And Nicola was always hungry and miserable.
How did Nicola discover the low carb way of eating? And how did it transform her life?
Listen to Episode 95 to find out!
Nicola is now an ambassador for the Public Health Collaboration in the UK, which is a British charity dedicated to informing and implementing healthy decisions for better public health. Find Nicola here: https://phcuk.org/about/

096. How have the processed food companies "hooked" us?
00:32:35
Michael Moss' book "Hooked" came out in 2021, and when I read it... it blew my mind!
As a consumer, it doesn't feel like the food manufacturers care about nourishing us, and even less about our health!
How has the processed foods industry "hooked" us on their processed products? Are they really created to be addictive?
Moss' book addresses questions about how fast food and processed foods affect our bodies and our brains (blood sugar, insulin, dopamine rush, obesity). He also makes the comparison with the tobacco industry and the addictive nature of cigarettes... and sugar.
What's behind the obesity epidemic? Are we really collectively more greedy, or do we just lack willpower? Apparently not.
Moss' book explains the "brain rush" that sugar and processed foods create, hampering our ability to make rational decisions about what to eat (and how much!).
So what exactly is it about processed foods (including sugar and flour) that makes us crave them? How do the big food companies hook us? And how can we choose to UN-hook ourselves?
You'll get some insight and tips in this episode!

097. "I had to change my perception about my body and about myself": Rachel
00:36:18
In this episode, Rachel talks openly and candidly about her struggles with sugar and food addiction.
She says that sugar had been a problem since childhood, but through her teen years and into her twenties, she didn't recognize that sugar and her disordered eating were problematic.
As a registered nurse and a nutritionist, Rachel was looking for tools to help her clients. And that's where she came across the concept of food addiction and realized that it also applied to her.
Her main issue was sugar. But Rachel used to restrict all kinds of foods, and that feeling of restriction led to her reaching out for chocolate and sweets at the end of the day.
Her recovery process was a challenge for her at first, but with support and community she was able to change her perception of her food, her body and herself.

098. "Sugar used to be such a big part of my identity": Dr. Lucy
00:44:07
Dr. Lucy Burns used to identify as (in her words) a sweet tooth, a chocoholic, and a lollytarian! Her whole life revolved around getting sugar in some form.
Sugar was such a big part of her identity that she wasn't aware of her dependence on it. And because all that sugar made her gain weight, she also went on diets.
As a doctor, she was always caring for others... and she turned to reward eating because she worked so hard. And in the medical world, that lack of self-care was normalized, so it continued. She couldn't imagine getting comfort, joy, and reward anywhere else.
But she was also sick of feeling like rubbish.
So she decided to do an experiment on herself to cut sugar out of her life... and she gives some practical tips for how you can get rid of sugar too in this episode. Dr. Lucy talks about evening snacking, nighttime eating , tools to implement the knowledge you have, understanding your brain, and changing your habits.
Now Dr. Lucy runs an online "lifestyle medicine" clinic out of Australia, where she helps people feel their best with the least medication possible.

099. "You can't rely on willpower to control cravings": Jenn
00:50:33
Jenn Trepek's passion for nutrition and helping others stems from kicking her own food issues and weight management.
As a kid, she ate lot of vegetables... but she also consumed lots of bread, chips, pasta... and soda! As she got older, Jenn noticed conversations around cholesterol and weight for her dad, but she didn't question it. Her family followed the food pyramids (with grains as its base) and the general diet culture.
Jenn used to dance, but when she stopped, she started to gain weight. She tried all the fad diets, but she kept gaining and losing pounds.
It was only when she started educating herself on accurate human biology that Jenn set out on a mission to share what we aren't generally taught about nutrition... and about listening to and understanding our body's signals.
In this episode, Jenn and I talk about willpower. She describes willpower as a finite resource that's like a cup that easily emptied by all the decisions we need to make every day.
Our "willpower cup" is quickly depleted. But we try to use willpower to eat less... to fight cravings... to resist sugary foods... and we think we have no willpower! But we do - it's just been used up by stress, multitasking, poor sleep, PMS, etc. So willpower is pretty much useless when you're having a craving.
In this episode, Jenn tells how we can replenish our "willpower cup", and what to eat to prevent blood sugar spikes and crashes... and cravings!
Now Jenn is a optimal health coach, podcaster, and business consultant. Find Jenn and her fantastic podcast "Salad With a Side of Fries" here: https://asaladwithasideoffries.com/

102. "Now I'm a diet free diva!": Tracy
00:37:37
Tracy was my guest on Episode 10, and we check back in with her in this episode to see how she's doing.
Tracy says that she feels that she's grown in the last year since she left sugar behind. She feels like she's no longer enslaved. She's gained the self-confidence that she was lacking for a really long time because she was so ashamed of her secret war with sugar.
In this episode, Tracy talks about how she learned to trust herself. She talks about her definition of sugar (and of addiction), her justification of "healthy" baked goods and treats and her need for them, and her imperfections. During COVID, her binge eating returned. And it scared her. As a personal trainer and a fit pro, she had been so busy for so long, that she didn't have time to stop. But during the pandemic, she was forced to stop. And think.
So Tracy took the time to do some inner work, with the help of a health coach, and she invested in herself and her well-being. She did the work to get to the root of her sugar addiction and her "diet brain". Listen to Tracy's inspiring journey in this catch-up episode.
And for more personalized guidance and step by step mentoring from me, Netta, the 12-week "hands on" experience in the Life After Sugar Program might be a good fit for you. Check out how to get to a p

104. "Cutting sugar can help you feel younger": Dr. Roizen
00:47:25
Dr. Michael Roizen is a physician who specializes in anti-aging. He became famous for developing the Real Age concept and has authored or coauthored 5 number one New York Times best sellers.
In this episode, Dr. Roizen talks about the concept of real age versus calendar age. In fact, your physiological age, not just how old you are, can make a huge impact on different risk factors for your health.
60 is the new 40, says Dr. Roizen!
And one factor in promoting faster aging has been shown to be sugar. Dr. Roizen explains how sugar glycosylates proteins and can make certain proteins in the body function less well. One example is hemoglobin A1C, which is related to blood sugar levels.
We also talk about motivation, the rate of aging in your body, joint stiffness (glycosylation of cartilage), stress, nutrition, your choices versus your genes, time-restricted eating... and lots more!
Dr. Roizen is passionate about helping people live younger longer. He shares his insight and amazing knowledge about aging and sugar in this episode.

105: "You can eat bread and still be low carb": Joy
00:48:05
Joy Kiddie, a Canadian dietitian known as the "low carb healthy fat dietitian", explains how for generations, bread has been a cultural staple for many cultures,. Also tortillas, naan, challah, roti... So it's understandable that when people want to reduce carbs in the form of flour, cutting bread is a struggle.
In this episode, we talk about the cultural importance of bread, and how flour is metabolized by the body in a very similar way to sugar. Joy also explains what the deal is with gluten, and how there is no one-size-fits-all low carb approach for everyone.
In her book Low Carb Breads of the World, Joy provides recipes for bread that can be baked by people following different types of low-carb diets. Her tried and tested recipes contain NO nut flour and no psyllium, xanthan gum, guar gum, or inulin, as these ingredients often cause digestive issues.
We also talk about auto-immune disorders, including thyroid issues, as well as addictive behaviours around bread (and sugar).

106. "Looking after my gut health helped reduce my anxiety": Kerri
00:47:31
When she was younger, Kerri spent a lot of her life sad, anxious, overweight, and frustrated — convinced that if she just lost weight, her life would change.
She'd spent tens of thousands of dollars on doctors, diets, supplements, medications, and fitness plans, trying to find a magic pill to help her lose weight quickly. She thought losing weight would cure her crippling anxiety and fatigue and lift her depression.
It was only when she took the brave step getting help to identify the root cause of her symptoms with the right functional medicine testing, that Kerri discovered how central gut health was to her healing.
Kerri has over a decade of training and experience as a functional medicine nutritionist. In this episode, Kerri talks about the root causes of digestive health, hormone imbalances, and mood symptoms.

108. "I rejected the diet culture and healed my metabolism": Erin
00:47:13
Erin had spent her life doing things "right". She followed the rules. "Eat less, move more". "Track your calories". All of it.
But it was when Erin's health took a dramatic turn for the worse that she really woke up to the fact that everything she'd learned was wrong. She'd spent her career in the fitness industry, and she realized that what she'd been telling people was wrong.
So she dove into the research, healed herself, and became passionate about teaching people the true biochemical workings of metabolism.
At the age of 37, Erin graduated with a diploma in Holistic Nutrition. And in this episode, we talk about the things that don't work... the same old things you've heard before from the diet culture and that have precious little to do with how much we eat or move.
A lot of what we discuss in this episode is very difficult for people to wrap their heads around. We do a little mythbusting, and we reject a lot of the conventional wisdom about weight loss, metabolism, and achieving an effortless relationship with food.

110. "Intermittent fasting helped me change my mindset about food": Martin

Martin recognizes that he had an emotional connection to food. As a businessman, he decided to approach his weight and health as if he was the CEO of a business.

111. "I don't need alcohol or sugar as a coping skill anymore": Kate
00:42:27
Kate Bee is the founder of The Sober School. Right back from her childhood surrounded by family members who drank, she says that alcohol was the most normalized drug around.
When she became an adult, Kate used alcohol to be cool, as well as to help her forget about all the things that she thought were wrong with her.
Looking back, she realizes that she'd also used food for comfort and reward... especially sugar. Sugar helped her cope with her feelings and was an end-of-the-day stress buster, she says.
And when Kate entered her 20s, she added alcohol to fill those same needs for comfort and stress relief. She'd come home every night and pour herself a glass of wine.
Many wines are full of sugar... and Kate recognizes now that she was using alcohol as well as sugar as an emotional crutch. And guess what she ate while she was drinking and when she was hungover? Sugar and junk food!
In this episode, Kate and I talk about the close relationship between sugar and alcohol, including how we use them when we have a dependency on them.
We also talk about willpower, having fun, our perceptions, social pressure, our beliefs about sugar and/or alcohol, and the freedom of living alcohol free and sugar free.

112. How sugar causes cravings and insulin resistance: Dr. Teitelbaum
00:46:10
Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum is a nationally known expert in the USA in the fields of chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, sleep, and pain.
His own personal story is touching and inspiring, and he tells about his own health struggles in this episode.
In this episode, Dr. Teitelbaum also talks about 4 major sources of cravings:
low energy
feeling irritable when hungry ("hangry") - low blood sugar
candida or yeast overgrowth
menopause/hormones that trigger anxiety & depression
We also talk about insulin resistance on a cellular level, and he explains how blood sugar and insulin work, and how insulin is involved with fat storage, high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, low blood sugar, mood swings, cortisol, and adrenal fatigue.
There is no "one size fits all" approach, but his (and my!) conclusion is this: Eat real whole foods that are nutrient dense and that don't spike your insulin.

113. Are we addicted to dopamine?
00:30:58
Have you heard of the book "Dopamine Nation", written by Dr. Anna Lembke?
As a psychiatrist, the author explores the exciting new scientific discoveries that explain why the relentless pursuit of pleasure leads to pain . . . and what to do about it.
In this episode, I summarize parts of Dr. Lembke's book. Disclaimer: It isn't specifically about sugar. But I can definitely see a parallel between the need for a dopamine high from drugs and other types of addictive behaviours, and our addiction to highly palatable processed food products, most of which contain refined sugar and flour.
This episode talks about:
what dopamine is
what neurotransmitters are
motivation and pleasure
the addictive potential of a behaviour or drug
the brain's reward pathway
the pleasure-pain balance
how some brains are more wired for addiction
food addiction
the link between alcohol, sugar, and liquid sugar (like soda or juice)
why we're more vulnerable to overconsumption in our Western culture
the "dopamine fast"
the advantages of abstinence
feeling good versus feeling "less bad"
how to get smaller doses of dopamine and feel good in other ways than with sugar
how Life After Sugar can help YOU live a more joyful life without needing a dopamine high from sugar

114. "I was addicted to sugar... Are you?": Clarissa
00:45:55
Are you a normal eater, an emotional eater, or a food addict?
Clarissa has a touching history of disordered eating. In fact, she says that she's a food addict.
The problem was that for most of her life, she didn't know it. Clarissa just always thought that something was wrong with her or that she didn't have enough willpower when it came to how much she ate.
In this episode, Clarissa shares her story about how she fought daily to control her weight and her obsessive compulsive thinking about food.
It was only when Clarissa was introduced to the concept of food addiction that it was like someone finally switched on a light in her mind.
She learned about the dangers of sugar, and how it negatively affects all aspects of our overall health. She learned to eat real whole foods, and not to be scared of healthy fats. Her whole relationship with food completely changed.
Clarissa had been working in the field of addictions and mental health for years, but then she started studying how certain types of foods (sugar/flour/grains) have the ability to activate the pleasure centre of the brain, exactly like hard drugs do. This was the key to her stopping the addictive cycle.

115. "Stabilizing blood sugar and insulin is key to better health": Victoria
00:42:13
All through her youth and her studies, Victoria (VJ) suffered from chronic fatigue, anxiety, brain fog, unexplained lightheadedness, swollen and painful joints, and cravings.
She also had the symptoms of multiple autoimmune disorders that she'd been diagnosed with from the age of 7. As a result, VJ went on to study immunology at university and focused on autoimmune disease. But learning about the underlying biology of autoimmune disease gave her no solutions for easing her symptoms.
So she went into nutritional therapy training, and started to understand that uncovering the root causes of her conditions was a better approach than just trying to appease her symptoms. And she transformed her health within 12 months – no napping, no aching muscles and restless legs, no irritated and inflamed skin, and best of all, her brain was back.
Stabilizing her blood sugar and insulin was key to improving VJ's health and her autoimmune disorders. In this episode, VJ shares the diet and lifestyle changes she made, especially vastly reducing sugar and processed foods.

117. "Eating less sugar and IF helped reduce my menopause symptoms": Karen
00:41:19
Karen started having menopausal symptoms around age 39. At the time, she had two small kids and a busy health journalism career.
Her list of symptoms included fatigue, hot flushes, insomnia, irritability, brain fog, memory loss, overwhelm, loss of libido, weight gain and vertigo... and she realized that they were related to her hormones and not just her stressful life.
After being diagnosed with early menopause, Karen was left to her own devices and spent several years trying everything to feel better and keep her weight off.
It wasn’t until she turned 50 that she stumbled upon the answer: Intermittent Fasting.
And to Karen's delight, IF was the perfect way to change her eating habits. She'd tried cutting sugar in the past, but she kept "falling off the wagon". However, with IF, her tastes started to change, and she was more attracted to real whole foods, and less to sweet and processed foods.
In this episode, we talk about all things menopause... and how IF and eating whole foods in your window can keep insulin low and help with menopause symptoms.

118. "As a marathon runner, I don't need sugar for energy": Greg
00:34:11
Greg's been a marathon runner for years. He'd always believed that you need to "carb load" before and during a long-distance run.
So he would use gels and other quick-burning sugars to get an energy boost. But then he'd suffer from the energy crash that came with them, as well as cramping.
What Greg found after several experiments was that he runs better and longer with other sources of fuel: protein and fat.
And also, it's not just what runners eat on the day, but also in between races or marathons that makes a difference: You can't run off a bad diet! Now Greg sees rewards as foods that make him feel good and run better. He recognizes that for his physiology, less processed foods and much less sugar works for him.
Whether you're a marathon runner or you lead a more sedentary lifestyle, Greg has some inspiring insight about living a happy and healthy life.

119. Why "life after sugar" is so unpopular
00:25:38
Let's face it: Life after sugar is pretty unpopular! Why?
Well... Did you want to stop eating sugar? Of course not! Who would?
I certainly never wanted to cut sugar ! No more chocolate? NO WAY!
Not many people actually want to quit sugar or their favourite comfort foods... but they often feel like they have to do something when their weight or health issues force them to make a change.
Nothing changes if nothing changes.
And changing your mindset, your habits, and even your beliefs about sugar - all this requires effort. And some deep thinking.
And that's also unpopular!
Listen to this tongue-in-cheek episode about why even if this podcast is popular, life after sugar is so UNpopular... and how you can be unpopular too! ;-)

120. "Sugar was harder for me to quit than alcohol": Angela
00:42:37
Angela says that being an alcoholic is the best thing that ever happened to her.
It was the catalyst that made her look at her life differently and make a commitment to be better.
In this episode, Angela shares about many of her biggest challenges, especially her addiction to alcohol. When she decided to get sober in her 30s, Angela's life changed for the better.
Being sober helped her work through the guilt and shame of her past choices, and this led her to move forward and create a new life and a better version of herself.
When Angela quit alcohol, she turned to sugar. She felt she "needed" sugar because her body was so used to metabolizing the sugar in alcohol. And she discovered that cutting sugar is not that easy!
Angela tells about her challenges with sugar, both personal and social... and how for her, quitting sugar is tougher than quitting alcohol.

121. "Colon cancer forced me to cut sugar and learn about gut health": Karin
00:46:02
Karin was diagnosed with colon cancer after a routine colonoscopy when she was 51 years old, in January 2020.
Yes, she had digestive issues, but this was a shock because she'd always taken care of her health. Karin decided that this wasn't going to be the end of her. After resection surgery, she was lucky not to need chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Thinking back to when she grew up in the 70s and 80s, Karin remembers that she ate the Standard American Diet, which is full of highly processed foods. But she was generally healthy and slim.
Now Karin says that her body looked healthy on the outside, but it wasn't necessarily healthy on the inside. So she decided to look after her diet.
The first thing she did was to research and educate herself about nutrition and gut health. She started by listening to her body.
Karin didn't think she ate that much sugar. But all the processed foods she was eating (including condiments like ketchup!) and soda contain hidden sugars and sweeteners and refined seed oils. So she learned to read labels and ingredients lists.
In this episode, Karin shares her empowering message and wealth of knowledge about gut health and the importance of eating whole nutritious foods... which automatically excludes sugar and ultra-processed foods!

124. "What I learned in nutrition school just didn't make sense": Lesya
00:36:17
Lesya was always on diets when she was growing up.
So she thought: If I become a nutritionist, I'll finally know the secret to how to eat, how to lose weight, and how to keep weight off.
But she was severely disappointed when she graduated. She questioned what she learned in nutrition school because it just didn't make sense to her. So she decided not to become a registered dietitian, and pursued a different career.
She'd tried the traditional "Eat less, move more" to lose her post-baby extra pounds. But that didn't work. She discovered keto in 2015, and that helped suppress her issues with sugar.
She also started learning things about food that went totally against what she'd been taught in nutrition school. More fat? Even saturated fat?? She was shocked... but it worked! She lost a lot of weight.
But Leysa realized that she was using keto to mask her sugar addiction. She wasn't getting to the root of her issues.
Leysa had to address her underlying reasons for struggling with sugar, desserts, and keto sweeteners. She's an abstainer - she couldn't stop at one bite.
Listen to how Lesya overcame her dependency on sweet foods and how she's found the freedom from sugar that suits her.

125. "I found my freedom from sugar addiction": Susan
00:44:00
Susan Peirce Thompson, PhD, is the founder of Bright Line Eating (BLE).
In her teens, she started using drugs, just for fun and experimentation at first. But she got really hooked and her drug abuse got worse and worse.
By the time she picked up speed (or crystal meth), she was 16 and was very concerned about her weight already. Except that when she used speed, she didn't feel she had to eat on it. And she lost a lot of weight.
Susan finally got clean and sober when she was 20. Her drug addiction had lasted six years.
But within nine months she'd gained 40 pounds. Susan started teaching in a community college, obtained her PhD, and got to develop courses in the psychology of eating and positive psychology. These laid the framework for what she ended up developing in Bright Line Eating.
Eventually, Susan traded her 12-step meetings for food meetings. She finally found the right configuration of what to do with her food. She lost her excess weight... and kept it off.
Susan has been slender now for 19 years. She learned the miracle of not eating sugar and flour. She also weighs and measures her food. Her life got so much better after that.
For Susan, "none is easier than some". In this episode, Susan and I talk about food groups, whole foods, the NOVA food classification scale, individuality, what we need and what we want, her identity as a food addict, following rules, intuitive eating, and freedom.

126. "You can train your brain to NOT like sugar anymore": Keith
00:40:03
Keith used to drink six cans of Coke a day. And with each soda, he would have a bag of crisps (chips), or a chocolate bar.
He knew it wasn't healthy, but he couldn't stop. When he tried to quit, he'd get withdrawal symptoms.
As an adult, Keith learned hypnosis, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), and coaching. These skills helped him with his shyness and his panic attacks.
Keith developed a process that makes your brain turn something you like into something you dislike. He tried it with Coke... and it worked! He went from craving Coke to feeling physically nauseous just at the thought of drinking it.
Over the course of six months, he lost 25 kilograms.
He was able to change the associations in his mind, as well as his feelings about the memories he had around soda.
Listen to Keith's tips on how you can "overwrite" the associations you have with sugar, without losing or dishonouring your memories of comfort foods.

127. How much sugar is too much?
00:22:03
How much sugar is too much?
In 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) published its recommendations for free or added sugars: 6 teaspoons for women, and 9 teaspoons for men. Per day.
But is that still "too much"?
Where's the line between an "OK" amount of sugar, and "too much"?
In my humble opinion, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. For some of us, zero is freedom. For others, moderation is key.
Listen to this episode to discover how much is too much for YOU.

128. "Stress and sugar are terrible for gut health": Dr. Cecilia
00:34:52
Gastroenterologist Dr. Cecilia Minano had so many health issues as well as high stress levels. When she finally got coaching, she learned empowering boundaries and self-care that changed her life.
She tells about her childhood when she would calm her insecurities and self-soothe with sugar. With her medical background, she now knows that sugar and industrially manufactured food products can lead to dysbiosis (an unbalanced gut).
Once she eliminated most sugar from her own diet, her life changed for the better.
Cecilia explains how the physical and emotional tension in our body that we call stress affects all aspects of our physical and emotional health, including in the microbiome. And processed foods make everything worse.
Our gut health is central to our general and emotional health. For example, serotonin is made in the gut and helps to regulate mood and reactions to stress. Stress can increase blood sugar levels, and eating less sugar can help improve your gut health.

129. "Sugar can negatively affect your skin": Erin
00:42:11
Dr. Erin Tjam is the author of "Skin Sobering: 99% of Products Age and Harm Your Skin".
In this episode, we talk about how after her own skin failed her, Erin researched how to take care of skin.
What she found in clinical studies is that a lot of skin care products contain chemical additives that are actually disrupting our natural skin.
What if we didn't need skincare products?
Advertising for beauty products was introduced back in the 1940s, so the idea of using less or no skincare products is a huge mindset shift!
As Erin did more research, she found out that what affects your skin the most is how you protect it... and what you eat. Or what you DON'T eat - like sugar and processed foods that contain sugar.
Listen to Erin's advice about how sugar can negatively affect your skin, and what you can do to have healthy, beautiful skin.

135. "I found peace with food when I cut sugar": Bethany
00:49:13
Bethany is a self-identified sugar addict who struggled with food, sweets, weight and dieting for as long as she can remember.
As a child, she remembers scheming ways to get more than her share of cookies, chocolate, or candies.
Bethany started dieting at about age 11, and didn't stop seeking out and trying different diets until her late 40's. All of this left her feeling as though she was deficient in some way, and wondering if she'd ever figure it out.
Two huge shifts came when Bethany learned that there's such a thing as sugar addiction. She realized that she was a sugar addict. She ditched sugar, sweeteners, and the scale in order to become free.
Listen to Bethany's touching, insightful, and inspiring story as she tells how peace with food is now her number one goal (instead of being at a goal weight).

8 years sugar free - can you believe it??
Who can live for 8 years without eating refined or added sugars, sweeteners, and flour? Is it even possible?
Well, I never would have thought it was possible if I wasn't living it myself! In July 2015, I stopped eating foods made with sugar, sweeteners, and flour. For just 2 weeks. Really! It was only supposed to be a temporary experiment...
But here I am 8 years later, living my "life after sugar". Sure, I'm not perfect, and life's given me (and all of us!) plenty of challenges.
So in this episode, I want to share with you 8 things I've learned during my 8 years sugar free, as well as my #1 tip for you!

You may think that cutting sugar completely will make your cravings worse... but actually, eating no sweet-tasting foods for a while can help beat your cravings!
Which foods keep cravings at bay? And which foods feed your cravings? I'll tell you in this episode.
And how can you "retrain" your tastebuds to get used to less sweetness, so that you're not always looking to replace sugar?
You'll also learn about a fun game I teach my program participants, called The Tasting Game. You can play it too!

138. "Want to look younger? Eat less sugar!": Erin
00:35:41
Erin Tjam was my guest a few weeks ago, and I invited her back to talk about skin aging, more specifically about glycation.
Glycation is a concept you may not have heard of (I hadn't!).
Basically, collagen and elastin keep your skin firm and supple. But your skin can age faster when sugar molecules like glucose and fructose adhere to your skin’s collagen and elastin proteins. And this can trigger more responses that can result in inflammation and signs of skin aging.
Erin explains how the glycation process causes something called advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) to form in your skin. These AGEs can play a major role in skin aging, and over time, the end-products make collagen rigid, so your skin looks less firm.
Eating a diet high in processed sugars can accelerate glycation, which can also increase inflammation, resulting in dryness or discomfort of the skin.
Listen to Erin as she explains what to do to slow the process of aging for your skin.

139. "Eating whole foods helped my MS symptoms disappear": Grace
00:37:21
Grace was 23 when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a is a potentially disabling autoimmune disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system).
Despite taking drugs, Grace continued to have attacks every 3 or 4 months, for another 11 years. Her immune system was totally out of whack, she says.
Then, she got pregnant. The doctors took her off all of her medications, which were much too toxic for her child.
As her son grew older, Grace had an idea: What if she ate the same foods as she was introducing to her toddler son? Could she reset her own immune system with whole foods?
So she ate exactly what her son was eating, introducing one new food at a time for them both. Real, whole foods... which automatically exclude sugar. She never resumed the medications.
After a while, she was elated to see that not only was he doing fine, but all her allergies and symptoms had disappeared! And she had no more MS attacks. For weeks, then months... then years.
That was 19 years ago, and Grace has never had another episode of MS since. Listen to Grace's inspiring story of how her whole foods diet allowed healing to take place at the most basic level.

140. Your biggest struggles with cravings
00:17:39
Are you struggling with cravings?
You're not alone!
You may feel like certain foods have a hold on your emotions. Or that you're in a vicious cycle. Or that the diet culture makes you feel like a failure. Or that you'll NEVER feel free from cravings!
Changing what you eat (or when you eat, like with intermittent fasting) may help, but it may not be enough to get to the heart of the matter.
A lot of people focus on WHAT they're craving instead of WHY.
And that's what I'm going to help you with in this episode: Your WHY.

142. "I'm not obsessed with food anymore!": Kristy
00:39:29
Most of Kristy's life was spent being overweight and food obsessed.
She turned to food for every emotion: sadness, joy, fear, excitement, happiness, anger, boredom, chaos – you name it!
For Kristy, food was the answer.
In this episode, Kristy shares how she had tried every diet and plan available. She might have short term success, but eventually she was right back to obsessing over food and bingeing on sugar and flour filled foods.
Kristy's life changed when she discovered the concept of following boundaries in regards to food: no sugar, no flour, no sweeteners, 3 meals a day, and measured portions.
For Kristy, this was a lifestyle change rather than a diet... and it was exactly what she needed to find her freedom from food obsession.

148. "For me, eating less sugar isn't a punishment, it's self-care": Sarah
00:43:02
In this week's episode, Sarah shares about her struggles with an eating disorder as a teenager, as well as with cravings due to crazy hormones during her recent pregnancy.
Sarah used to see cutting sugar as a punishment because she was focused on losing weight. She felt bad about herself and often resorted to negative self-talk. But more recently, her outlook has changed. Now she wants to concentrate on her health, not just her weight.
Sarah loves animals, especially horses. We discuss how she cares for her horses in a positive way... and how she's learning to treat herself with kindness and compassion too. And eating less sugar is part of Sarah's self-care.

149. "Food addiction is not your fault": Amanda
00:47:36
Amanda Leith struggled with weight problems for most of her life.
She tried all the diets, exercise classes, and therapy. The solution, she was told, was either, “Eat less and exercise more,” or, “Work on your emotional issues with a good therapist.”
She'd even had weight loss surgery... which had completely failed because she couldn’t follow the "everything in moderation" diet.
It was only when Amanda got the right help to recognize that she was a food addict that her life changed.
Amanda shares how when she found out she was addicted to certain foods, especially sugar and flour, she felt relieved. At last - she understood that her food addiction wasn't her fault!
She found HER solution, and now she works with people every day to help lift them out of the trenches of food obsession and addiction.

Wouldn't you love to focus on feeling vibrant and healthy versus looking a certain way?

156. "I had to reframe how I see sugar": Sandhya
00:40:18
Sandhya is a pharmacist in Australia. In 2019 she started getting symptoms of breathlessness and palpitations. So she went to the doctor and got everything checked out, but the only thing they could find was that she was pre-diabetic, so her doctor told her she needed to lose some weight.
She recognized that she overate, particularly sugary things. So she decided to do a self-hypnosis course for 6 weeks with guidelines on how to cut out sugar, and it was life-changing for her.
Sandhya managed to change her entire diet to not include added sugar. She experimented with substituting one ingredient for another, so it wasn't too overwhelming. Plus her husband jumped on board and they both lost weight!
And the most important aspect in her transformation was that she was able to reframe how she sees sugar. Sandhya says that she hasn't been able to go back to eating sugar because as soon as her symptoms come back, she wonders: why am I putting myself through this?
Not eating sugar has become part of Sandhya's identity. She says: "I feel so much more free because I'm creating the identity I want around sugar. "
