11 Mar 202386. But I Know What I Should Be Doing -- So Why Don't I Do It?00:42:25

The voice of the "should" -- the things we know we should be doing but can't seem to do. Maybe we consume so much self-help information and don't feel like we can apply any of it. Why does this happen? What can we do about it?

  • Shift of language: “I’d like to” or “I can” instead of “I should” or “I need to”
  • Stef’s experience of the should voice in yoga
  • Permission to do things inconsistently
  • Do we feel better about doing things that are non-negotiable?
  • How do we deal with the disappointment in ourselves?
  • The somatics of “shoulds” and overwhelm
  • The vague-ness of our shoulds - can we make the goal more specifi?
  • The diet culture associations of certain goals
  • What do Stef & Sarah feel like they “should” do today?

08 Nov 2023121. But Am I Just Deceiving Myself?00:36:31

Do you ever feel like you're just kidding yourself about things? About how you're going to just get it together one day, or finally arrive in that smaller body you keep striving for? What is the difference between hope and self-deception? This episode talks about:

  • Stef is just soooo self-aware
  • Self deception might look like: “just one last time; I won’t binge tomorrow.”
  • Does self awareness change the behavior?
  • Deluding ourselves into thinking our “thin body” is just around the corner
  • Updating old beliefs with new goals or values
  • Splitting and “parts” (IFS theory)
  • Not looking in the mirror – are we lying to ourselves about what we look like?
  • So what do we do?
  • Do we deceive ourselves into believing that we will become something other than ourselves?
  • Black and white thinking is part of self-deception (and what we can do instead)

26 Jun 2024154. But I Don't Know What to Eat...00:45:25

How do other people make decisions about what to eat? Have you ever been interested in understanding what makes a person choose the breakfast or lunch or snack that they choose? Sarah and Stef offer their personal decision making processes of the meals they ate the day of recording this podcast. From there, the conversation branches off into topics like practical hunger, interoception (a principle of Intuitive Eating), cravings, habits, and preferences.

We also ask ourselves the question: what do you do when nothing sounds good?

Finally, we talk about what strategies you might use to make decisions about food if you're still in the middle of disordered thoughts and behaviors around food.

24 Apr 2024145. But Is Body Neutrality Really Possible?00:46:27

This body image centered episode delves into the distinctions between body positivity and body neutrality, offering a nuanced exploration of how individuals can relate to their bodies beyond conventional narratives of self-love.

The conversation begins by distinguishing body positivity from body neutrality. Originally, body positivity emerged from the fat activist movements of the 1960s, aiming to empower marginalized bodies, especially those of fat, Black women, and aligning with LGBTQ rights. In contrast, body neutrality is presented as a more muted, less emotionally charged approach, appealing to those who may find the ra-ra! enthusiasm of body positivity unreachable.

Stef, who hosts a Body Neutrality for Body Image Workshop, discusses the personal significance of body neutrality as a middle ground where you can acknowledge your actual feelings about your body—whether positive or negative—without allowing those feelings to dictate your self-worth or mood.

This epidosde emphasizes that adopting a body neutral stance is not an instant change but a gradual process of shifting one’s value system and managing emotional responses.

31 May 202398. But How Would I Cope Without my Disordered Eating?00:49:27

Most of us develop disordered relationships with food because that food serves a purpose; it becomes a coping tool. So when we no longer have it as a way of comforting ourselves, what happens? How do we deal with that vulnerability and the huge gap it leaves in our emotional support system?

  • What does the disordered eating help solve?
  • Stef finds restriction the bigger gap; for Sarah, it’s the binges.
  • How do we make our own cocoons if it’s not with food?
  • Stef’s somatic practice for overwhelm
  • Depression energy coming up without the ED
  • How yoga helped Sarah go “micro” and anchor into something smaller than existential loneliness and lows
  • The role of safety in being able to let go of ED behaviors (because we know they work)
  • The Burnout Cycle (per authors Nagoski)
  • How does Sarah not panic?
  • Fear of death (how did we get to that part of this conversation??)

The first in a four-part series called: Back to Basics to explore the foundational concepts of disordered eating and eating disorders from the ground floor. We hear from so many people who weren't aware that their experiences had a name, or that other people are dealing with them, too. In this first session, we're looking at the question: Do I Have a Problem? Is what I'm dealing with considered a disorder? Is it binge eating? Restricting? Orthorexia? What if I'm just an emotional eater?

  • What comes first -- low self-esteem or disordered eating behaviors?
  • The relationship between safety, shame, and self esteem (especially in restrictive behaviors)

22 Jan 2025184. But Do You Plan Your Binges? (Live Episode)00:41:04

In this insightful episode of Life After Diets, hosts Stef and Sarah delve into the topic of planned versus unplanned binges. They explore the complexities behind both types of binge eating, including personal anecdotes and psychological insights. The discussion covers how factors like anxiety, stress, and emotional triggers contribute to these behaviors. They also examine the role of planning in providing a sense of control and how unplanned binges often feel more impulsive and uncontrollable. Through an open forum with their community, they engage in a deeper conversation about managing anxiety, recognizing patterns, and finding ways to cope with urges to binge. This episode is especially valuable for anyone looking to understand more about their own binge-eating behaviors and seeking ways to manage them.

Key Points:

  1. Understanding Planned Binges: The hosts discuss how some individuals plan their binges days in advance, viewing it as a reward or a way to cope with scarcity.
  2. The Nature of Unplanned Binges: In contrast, unplanned binges are often characterized by impulsivity and a lack of control, hitting individuals suddenly and leading to frantic eating.
  3. Psychological and Emotional Factors: Anxiety, stress, and other emotional factors play significant roles in both types of binges.
  4. Community Engagement: Real-time interactions with listeners provide varied perspectives, including experiences with planned and unplanned binges and strategies for coping.
  5. Managing Anxiety and Urges: Tips and insights on how to manage anxiety and control impulses are shared, emphasizing the importance of self-compassion and understanding personal triggers.

Tune in to gain a deeper understanding of binge-eating behaviors, explore effective coping strategies, and feel less alone in your journey towards a healthier relationship with food.

03 Jul 2024155. But I Don't Trust Myself with Food (Live Episode)00:40:12

If we're not dieting, won't we just be completely out of control with food? That's the risk when we feel like we can't trust ourselves.

In this episode, we talk about what self-trust is -- including how we thought about it before recovery and how we think about it now. And maybe most importantly, how we developed more of it!

This episode was livestreamed to our private community so we also answer some listener questions about personal experiences with self-trust.

We discuss:

  • trusting yourself not to binge
  • self-alliance and self-abandonment
  • the role of self-sabotage
  • being mad that versus being mad at
  • what needs to be in place before we keep promises to ourselves?
  • the stories we tell ourselves

15 Jan 2025183. The Mother Wound – How Our Mothers Screwed Us Up00:44:54

In this episode, Stef and Sarah delve into the emotional topic of the mother wound. The discussion begins with light-hearted banter but quickly deepens into a profound conversation about the impact mothers have on their children. They explore insights from books like "Mother Hunger" by Kelly McDaniel and "Discovering the Inner Mother" by Bethany Webster but also bring personal experiences into the room. The hosts discuss the different ways mothers can nurture and unintentionally wound their children (is the Mother Wound even avoidable from an existential perspective?) and how these experiences shape adult relationships and self-concept, including our relationships with food and bodies. They also touch on the societal pressures mothers face and the challenges of achieving a balance between nurturing, protection, and guidance.

01 Feb 202381. A Conversation About Brain Over Binge00:39:41

Many people who've struggled with binge eating for a long time have come across the book "Brain Over Binge" by Kathryn Hansen. Sarah and Stef, co-hosts, both read the book as they tried to recover and are discussing how the method landed for them. The episode looks into:

  • Stef’s history and experience with reading BOB and taking the official BOB course
  • Sarah’s experience of “looking forward to” the next binge urge to learn a new response.
  • Dismissal of urges as irresponsible – what if those messages from the primal brain are valid, asks Stef
  • Weight and eating as pathological
  • Minimization (demonization?) of conventional therapy
  • Do some personality types find this approach easier than others?
  • Sarah’s use of RALIC to ride out binge urges - but not with the goal of not bingeing itself.
  • What if giving yourself permission to binge does NOT feel okay?
  • Does it work to delay a binge?
  • What can we take from BOB, in S&S’s perspective?

03 Apr 2024142. But What If Food Gets Me Through the Day?00:42:05

In this podcast episode, the hosts explore the complex relationship between food and emotional needs. The conversation begins with a reflection on Stef's Instagram post suggesting that food serves as a portal to solitude, comfort, pleasure, and escape, making the idea of changing one’s relationship with food seem like a sacrifice of essential coping mechanisms. The discussion delves into personal anecdotes and reflections on how food has occupied significant mental and emotional real estate, offering a sense of engagement or distraction during times of discomfort or emptiness.

The conversation shifts to the concept of "spoon theory" as a metaphor for energy and capacity management, illustrating how individuals have limited resources to cope with daily demands. This leads to a broader discussion on the importance of recognizing one’s own limits and allowing oneself the grace to rest without self-judgment. The episode emphasizes the significance of self-awareness and giving oneself permission to meet needs in more diverse and healthy ways, including acknowledging the importance of physical touch and emotional support.

Throughout, the hosts engage with their live community, incorporating questions and comments that enrich the conversation.

06 Dec 2023125. But Why Aren't I Prioritising My Health?00:45:02

Aside from body image, health seems to be one of the biggest concerns about gaining weight. Because weight gain is common for many people recovering from eating disorders, health is a big sticking point making recovery harder and more complicated. In this episode, we're looking at the relationship between weight and health, to include:

  • Stef explains why she can't look at her bloodwork results as the episode records
  • Separating the impact of binge eating (and restriction!!) on health versus weight
  • Defining "health at every size"
  • Does health decrease when BMI increases? An anecdote.
  • Why isn't the desire for better health enough to get us to stop eating in a disordered way?
  • The relationship between health and our self-esteem
  • The rebel response -- what's that got to do with health?
  • Mental health as a gateway to physical health
  • The power of lowering expectations
  • Why don't we want to take care of ourselves when we're feeling low? Why wouldn't we want to help ourselves? The concept of self-sabotage.
  • The difference between being broken and just being lost or in a freeze state
  • The role of shame
  • Health and fearmongering
  • Regulating the nervous system as a strategy

01 May 2024146. But I Have A Scarcity Mindset00:45:19

In this episode, the hosts really get into how scarcity affects us, especially when it comes to food. They start by breaking down what scarcity truly means—it's not just about running out of something, but feeling like you never have enough of what you need. This feeling can lead to behaviors like hoarding or binge-eating, not just with food, but in many parts of our lives.

They share personal stories and observations from society to show how the fear of not having enough drives us to overcompensate in different ways, like stockpiling items or overindulging when certain foods seem rare or unavailable. They talk about "window of opportunity" eating, when we eat not because we're hungry, but because we're afraid we won't get another chance to enjoy that particular food.

The hosts also delve into how these behaviors often stem from emotional needs rather than physical hunger. They discuss how past traumas or emotional gaps can lead us to act out of scarcity, affecting how we see our current situations, often without even realizing it.

Throughout the episode, they offer strategies to deal with these impulses, like mindfulness and asking yourself why you feel the need to act on scarcity. Understanding these feelings better can help us control them.

The episode ends on a thoughtful note, stressing the importance of self-awareness and kindness in facing scarcity. By recognizing and addressing the emotional roots of our behaviors, we can make more thoughtful choices that lead to healthier and more fulfilling lives. It's a really insightful conversation that helps us see how deep-seated feelings of scarcity can affect us and offers ways to handle them.

18 Jan 202379. But I Just Want Some Control00:48:08

Control is an unavoidable theme in the subject of eating disorder recovery. What is your relationship to control and how do you define it? The hosts explore their own experience of the concept and also highlight its important (and at times, healthy) role in navigating recovery. Sarah & Stef discuss:

  • Light podcast banter. What podcasts do we listen to?
  • The thrill of control/restriction
  • Stef feels like control is safety; Sarah feels like control is dominance.
  • The role of control in bulimia and/or restriction
  • The illusion of control; if we see that it’s an illusion, does it break the spell?
  • Is control always at the root of EDs? Not true for Sarah!
  • Control as related to sense of self or emotional magnitude
  • Control and rebellion. We need to know we have agency & choice.
  • Surrender: higher power and the inner compass
  • We can’t control what’s hard
  • How much control is healthy? How else can we make it productive?

29 May 2024150. But Is It Self-Care or Self-Indulgence?00:46:33

The world talks a lot about self-care, but many people in this community feel selfish taking care of themselves. It can be seen as indulgent to take the time to tend to our own needs, especially as mothers -- check out the second half of the podcast where Stef addresses this from her perspective as a parent (her take might surprise you). So what's the difference between self care and self indulgence?

Speaking of indulgence, we also look at the way we talk about food under this lens. Are the connotations of this word inherently problematic? Are we just gluttons or is there a case for the healthy pursuit of food as pleasure, or even as self-care?

  • How long it took Stef to reach her weight set range
  • Periods of rapid weight gain
  • Weight gain as the body’s insurance policy
  • Doesn’t it make sense that if eating stabilizes, we should lose weight?
  • Do you have to love yourself to make peace with your body?
  • Being in our bodies in the present moment vs fearing its future
  • Weight gain as a result of disordered eating masked as intuitive eating
  • Is it worth it?

17 Apr 2024144. But What Is Gentle Nutrition?00:34:52

In this podcast episode, we explore the concept of Gentle Nutrition, explained as combining basic nutritional knowledge with body attunement. This 10th principle of Intuitive Eating is about recognizing how different foods affect one’s body while maintaining a non-restrictive approach to eating.

We also touch on personal experiences with nutritional adjustments post-recovery from eating disorders -- how and when do you think about nutrition when you're learning to allow all foods?? Does anti-diet have a "middle ground" or does it promote choosing "junk food"?

As with every discussion on this podcast, there is nuance.

Eating choices can be balanced with nutritional wisdom, like combining carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and fiber for satisfying meals, or choosing warmer foods for comfort. It's leaning into attunement to our needs rather than just "rules".

We also want to mention our upcoming events including Stef's gentle nutrition course designed to support you in exploring these concepts without judgment or rigidity. And, in-person events in England this May!

Two annoucements! Join our mailing list if you want to be in the know about upcoming events in the UK this May 2024; and our next four episodes will be a Back To Basics Series.

Now on to this week's episode...we're reflecting on the past year and looking ahead to the new one, but not in the mainstream fashion of toxic positivity or or New Year New Me crap. If you need to get away from that energy, this one's for you. It's a silly-ish one.

  • Our words and intentions for 2023 -- how did we do??
  • Writing a book?
  • Sarah's reflection on her year of nomading and her new word for 2024
  • Sarah helps Stef pick a word because she doesn't want to pick a word but also sort of does
  • What does makeup have to do with it?
  • Frivolous bullshit
  • What can you possibly take from this episode? (we do get there)

05 Jun 2024151. But What Do Attachment Styles Have to Do With Food Boundaries?00:43:28

This week we are talking about attachment styles.

The psychological concepts of anxious attachment, avoidant attachment, and disorganized attachment have been used to understand our relationship dynamics with other people, but can it also be used to understand our relationship dynamics with food?

For example, anxious attachment in relationships looks like constantly seeking validation and having porous boundaries with ourselves and others for fear of losing connection. Might this also translate to having porous boundaries with food? Would we consistently seek out and overeat because we have scarcity around that, too?

Tune in to see how an understanding of attachment theory might help you understand why Intuitive Eating feels difficult and binge eating, compulsive eating, and/or restricting feels so primal...

21 Dec 202275. ADHD & Disordered Eating: A Conversation with Becca King, RD00:51:04

The intersection of neurodivergence with disordered eating is a relatively unexplored area. Thought hyperactivity, food urgency, and nervous system dysregulation can have powerful consequences on our relationship with food. We talk to Becca King (aka The ADHD Nutritionist) about things like:

  • Gender differences in ADHD
  • Types and symptoms of ADHD
  • Hyperactivity of the brain (hyperactive thoughts)
  • Becca’s experience with EDs
  • Stimulation through food (while watching TV, at night when meds wear off)
  • What can we do about impulsivity with food
  • How to slow down
  • Do you need a diagnosis? How would it help?
  • Medication
  • Becca’s notable sources of dopamine
  • ADHD and restriction

13 Sep 2023113. But I Only Want to Eat "Junk Food"00:44:10

Do you want to eat intuitively but find yourself only wanting "junk food"?

This is a common thing to hear from people trying healing their relationship with food.

A caveat to this conversation -- depending on where you are in this process, the approach to this conflict will be different. For example, wanting fun foods (and ONLY fun foods) at the beginning of recovery can be a really normal part of the healing process.

This conversation also considers the more chronic, ongoing experience of wanting only fun foods all the time.

We discuss:

  • Why are we putting “junk food” in quotation marks/inverted commas?
  • How is “junk food” defined?
  • Junk food begets junk food?
  • Will our bodies naturally crave salads (etc) after a while?
  • What if we don’t like fruits or vegetables?
  • What if there are certain foods that we are simply not able to habituate?
  • Is abstinence from certain foods a good idea?
  • What are your beliefs about these foods in general, or specific types of these foods?
  • How can meal prep help here?
  • This topic has different approaches at different stages of recovery

15 Feb 202383. But Can Abstaining from Sugar & Carbs Help?00:41:07

Many of us have tried to reduce or eliminate white sugar, flour, carbohydrates, and/or processed foods in order to improve our relationship with food, reduce overeating, and lose weight. Does this approach make sense? Does it help? Is it a problem with the approach or a problem with us? In this episode, we explore:

  • Stef’s experience of feeling good on keto, and it’s unraveling
  • Is it a psychological or a physiological issue?
  • Bright Line Eating and the science of insulin and leptin
  • Stef’s “close-to-the-bathroom” analogy
  • How community impacts this process
  • The rebel spirit
  • Can we separate abstinence from morality? Does anyone?
  • Personal responsibility when consuming content around these concepts

12 Jun 2024152. But How Do I Deal With a Relapse?00:42:41

This episode is all about relapse in the context of eating disorder recovery. We cover topics such as shame, self-awareness, boundaries, dopamine regulation, catastrophization, and the impact of life circumstances on relapse.

Relapses can be very distressing; it's tempting to think we've failed or that we'll "never really get better." In the second half of this episode, we talk about the idea of "remembering and forgetting" as a muscle that actually builds resilience over time in eating disorder recovery -- even if the "forgetting" is relapsing.

27 Mar 2024141. "But I Did Feel More Confident in a Smaller Body" with guest Stephanie Dodier00:42:58

In this episode, we have a pretty cool chat with Stephanie Dodier, reformed dieter and coach for women post diet-culture. We dive deep into how society kinda messes with our heads, telling us we need to look a certain way to feel good about ourselves. Dodier brings up something called "the safety of conformity," which is basically about how we mix up feeling safe with actually being confident.

Stephanie shares some personal stories -- for example, about being taken to a Weight Watchers meeting when she was just 12. It was a tough moment that stuck with her, making her feel like her body was somehow "wrong." This story set the stage for a lot of what she talked about, like how we chase after this image society wants for us, thinking it'll make us happy or confident, but it's really about feeling safe from judgment.

The chat also ventures into how all of this safety stuff isn't just about weight. It ties into aging, health, and money. (Did you ever stop to think about how being worried about money is kind of similar to worrying about weight?) It's all about trying to fit into what we think we're supposed to be.

Towards the end, we disuss how facing doubts and insecurities is actually a part of being confident. The real journey is about exploring all of the parts of our lives where we might not feel secure -- and figuring out how to work with them.

Bio: Stephanie Dodier is a Clinical Nutritionist CNP, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, host of two top-ranking podcasts in the non-diet industry and creator of the Going Beyond The Food Method™️. She founded Undiet Your Life, a global coaching and online training platform focused on helping women make peace with food and their body so that they can live a fulfilling life… right now! 22 Nov 2023123. But Should I Keep Fear Foods in My House?00:46:12

If we're no longer dieting, should we keep all of our trigger foods and/or "fear foods" in the house? Will we just end up eating them all and feeling MORE out of control? On the other hand, would it be restricting to not have them around? It's complicated! We're here to talk about the nuances of this question, including:

  • Does not keeping foods in your house mean the same thing as abstaining from those foods altogether?
  • Stef’s client story: can it be a bad idea to bring foods into the house?
  • Inserting a “reactionary gap” – the pause between wanting the food and eating it
  • Restrictors vs Permitters – does this have an influence on the approach of keeping foods in the house or not?
  • The recovery stage hierarchy
  • The difference between “allowing all foods” versus truly feeling peaceful with those foods
  • The issue of impulsivity
  • Who/what is your voice of "no"? (and the parent on the soccer field)
  • Have you "failed" at intuitive eating if you have the foods in the house and still want to binge on them?
  • What if there is just one certain food that you just cannot habituate?
  • What comes first: belief changes or behavior changes?

19 Jul 2023105. Weight & Invisibility00:38:05

The intersection of weight and visibility is discussed at length in this episode. Weight can make us feel more visible or less visible because it is something our culture pays attention to. When we lose weight, we are "seen"; when we gain weight, we may become invisible. We discuss this topic from psychodynamic and somatic perspectives; how might our weight be protecting us? Note: this episode is not suggesting that weight is pathological. Body sizes are diverse among humans depending on a multitude of factors, and largely dependent on genetics. This episode looks at weight, trauma, and visibility as one part of a larger picture.

We discuss:

  • Unwanted sexual attention
  • Weight loss as a way of being “good” for parents
  • Weight as a “nice” identity; what if we lose weight and become more threatening to other females?
  • I have a conflicting desire to be seen and not to be seen
  • Why would we be afraid of meeting our own needs?
  • If we are visible – or exposed – what if we can’t find safety in our hiding again?

  • Fullness and guilt
  • Fullness and feeling like we “should” stop
  • Fullness and being in the body
  • What if I eat and never feel full?
  • Delayed fullness cues and extreme hunger
  • Discomfort tolerating even slight fullness
  • What was fullness associated with growing up?
  • What if I stretch out my stomach by getting too full too often?

30 Oct 2024172. But How Do I Deal with Being Triggered?00:45:51

In this episode, we delve into the concept of "triggers" and how they affect our emotions and behaviors (including how they impact binge eating and restricting and body image). Our hosts, Sarah and Stef, share personal anecdotes about feedback on social media (like when people make comments about our clothes or teeth or how we are only in this for ourselves), the psychological and physical responses to being triggered, coping mechanisms, and practical tools. They differentiate between being triggered and being activated, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and time to process intense emotions. The conversation touches on the role of community in managing these reactions and the importance of compassion and presence when dealing with emotional triggers. Join us for an honest discussion on how to navigate the complexities of emotional triggers and find healthier ways to cope.

This episode features a conversation with Danielle Bublitz, a registered dietitian from Southern California who has lived with type 1 diabetes for over 20 years. Danielle shares insights on the stigma surrounding type 2 diabetes, what it means to have prediabetes, and the tendency of wellness culture to pathologize blood sugar spikes in people without diabetes (including people with eating disorders, disordered eating, and orthorexia).

The conversation also touches on the controversies surrounding Ozempic and GLP-1 medications, continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), and the psychological implications of dieting and food restriction for blood sugar management.

Danielle Bublitz, MS, RDN, is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. She specializes in working with people with diabetes and binge eating in a Health At Every Size(R)-aligned lens. Danielle earned her bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics from California State University at Chico and received her Master’s degree from California State University at Northridge while completing the dietetic internship program. 07 Jun 202399. But My Inner Rebel Sabotages Me00:42:34

No conversation about dieting and restricting is complete without talking about the inner rebel! Is binge eating rebellious? Is restriction rebellious? How is our inner rebel at work when it comes to our relationship with food?

  • Stef grew up as a people pleaser, but deconstructed that when her binge eating became out of control.
  • Sarah's most important factor in keeping peace with food: feeling like she has choice.
  • We think of the "rebel" as a bad, naughty thing; but the rebel acts in the name our our very human need for autonomy.
  • Our baseline understanding of our own autonomy may develop in early childhood. Stef shares how she sees this manifesting with her children.
  • What about the conflict between safety and freedom? Is is possible to have both? How do we maintain a balance when we need to feel safe and grounded, but also need to feel free and unrestricted? Is that the metaphor for "control" with food (restriction) and "freedom" with food (binge eating)?
  • Boundaries as an exploration of safety on both sides of the pendulum. We can't understand our own boundaries until we've understood what "too far" feels like.
  • The rebel as a representative for our unmet needs.
  • Rebellion in body image. Stef feeling lack of autonomy in body size (rebelling against biology) and in fashion (rebelling against thin privilege).
  • Sarah LIED (gasp!) as a teenager
  • How we talk to and about our inner rebel matters. The rebel may need validation.
  • Diet culture, capitalism, patriarchy, etc is an appropriate place to rebel.

This episode was livestreamed to our LAD community to answer the question: should I keep my trigger foods in my house? Stef and Sarah share some personal experiences of foods pre and post-recovery, and listeners ask questions pertaining to the conflict around this experience.

  • Granolaaaaaaaa
  • Muscle memory of a binge: when we eat certain foods in a certain place, does the body automatically move into binge mode?
  • Stealing Easter candy from kids baskets
  • Nudge Theory
  • Do you bring home the leftover dessert or do you throw it away?
  • What’s the difference between a nudge and mental restriction?

07 Aug 2024160. But Why is Mindful Eating SO Hard?!00:43:36

In this engaging episode of their podcast, Stef and Sarah dive deep into the topic of mindful eating. Stef shares some insightful anecdotes about how clients often come to her with a preconceived notion of how they "should" be eating. Sarah chimes in with practical advice from her workshops, suggesting that eating mindfully isn't about being perfect but more about being present.

Throughout the episode, they explore the challenges and misconceptions surrounding the practice. They emphasize that mindful eating isn't one-size-fits-all. For some, it can exacerbate issues like perfectionism or diet culture pressures. They also talk about the importance of self-compassion and curiosity in the journey towards a healthier relationship with food.

There are relatable stories about struggles with binge eating, the cultural weight of diet culture, and the roller coaster of trying to eat "right." They also hit on some lighter notes, like Sarah's recent misadventure with an electric blanket and Stef's physical therapy updates.

19 Apr 202392. Life Transitions/Sarah in NYC00:32:42

Sarah packed her bags to head to NYC -- and this episode was recorded just a few days after she arrived. The conversation focuses on the disorientation and overwhelm we can feel during times of transition, captured in real time. How did Sarah interact with food and body image as she left her home and ventured into a new chapter?

  • Sarah’s just arrived in NYC for seven weeks!
  • Rerouting the original plan for this weeks’ topic because Sarah is in the middle of an identity/existential crisis and we want to talk about it!
  •  Food choices during the transition time; like it “doesn’t count” or “it doesn’t matter”
  • Feeling alone in a new city without your “people”
  • The sensitivity of being in a new place and picking up on all the details and potentially threatening experiences
  • Expectations and “shoulds” in new situations
  • How does food interact with this feeling?
  • Can we find pleasure with food when we’re feeling this sense of disconnection?
  • Body image and clothes

We are back with another recovery story -- this time from Louise, a member of our community (which you can join here, by the way!) Louise explains her story of disordered eating and restriction starting in adolescence, eventually leading her to give up dieting to lean into an anti-diet approach. Like so many others in ED recovery, Louise had to deal with weight gain and body image issues in exchange for food freedom -- but came out with this story to tell. Listen to her inspirational message about sex, attraction, and empowerment in this very cool, real-story episode.

  • The desire to put off eating to reduce “out of control” eating
  • The psychology of the ego in diet mentality, and how that sets up expectations and perfectionism with food
  • The “Eat When You’re Hungry” downfall of some Intuitive Eating mindsets
  • What state are you in when you start eating?
  • Biofeedback & self-talk during rapid eating periods
  • Black & white mentality (either eating “well” or eating it all)
  • Pleasure and dopamine withdrawal (is it boring to just eat “normal” amounts?)

28 Sep 202263. Living in the Messy Middle: Nicole's Story00:44:48

This episode features a guest -- not an expert -- who is still working through her relationship with food and body image and doesn't have it all figured out. We hope you find it helpful to hear from someone who might be exactly where you are, and can relate to the parts of this process that don't feel like they have answers. We discuss:

  • Where food and body issues started for Nicole
  • Feeling stuck between “I can’t diet anymore” and “I can’t deal with my weight.”
  • Photographs & mirrors as triggers
  • Difficulty assessing fullness
  • What is intuitive eating? What’s the goal?
  • Worth, safety, and weight
  • Fearing continued/future weight gain
  • Guilt about doing this work and still struggling with body image and obsessive thoughts
  • Separating parts of the self

15 Mar 202387. But What If I'm a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP)?00:44:18

Psychologist Elaine Aron coined the term "Highly Sensitive Person" to refer to a subset of the population (estimated to be about 15-20%) who seem to have more sensitive nervous systems than the rest of the population. HSPs may be more easily overwhelmed and activated by stimuli in their internal and external environments, which may intersect with using food to help regulate the system. In this episode, we talk about:

  • What does it mean to be a HSP?

  • Stef’s score vs Sarah’s score (on the HSP test)

  • Stef tickles her own arm in her sleep

  • Sensitivity impact on motherhood

  • The organizational aspect of food to regulate the impact of external chaos

  • Do HSPs feel more sensitive to lack of control?

  • What do we do to manage sensitivity?

  • Food as a way to de-stimulate

  • How to help someone who is highly sensitive
