22 Nov 2022Ashleigh Warner on Slowing Down and Sitting with Discomfort00:56:52

In this week’s episode I chat with Ashleigh Warner about about her experience of becoming a mother and how this has evolved over the years for her. We discuss finding meaning and purpose in motherhood, learning to sit with discomfort and to slow down.. and the biggie: surrender.

Ashleigh is a mother of two young children and is a family psychologist who works with families from all over the world. Ashleigh supports families on their respectful parenting path when things get tough. She has a passion for working with families with more sensitive and stuck children as these kids are often so misunderstood. Ashleigh runs the instagram page, raising humans kind, where she shares information and education that supports families to understand what is beneath their child's behaviour so that they can go from the heat of the moment to the heart of the matter.

29 Nov 2022Seeds For Your Garden - The Right Time To Have More Kids00:13:46

On this week's Seeds for Your Garden, I chat about some of the things to think about when considering whether the time is right to have more kids. Someone put this question to me on my instagram page, and while I don't offer individualised advice on the podcast (because its simply not possible), I do have some big thoughts about this. Spoiler... YOUR mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical wellbeing is the most important factor. Tune in to hear the rest.

Towards the end I also raise the suggestion that having multiple children close together could sustain the patriarchal structure of our culture. I wanted to add a further note to this; this is my musing for women who already find themselves diminished and silenced in some way by the demands placed on them by the structure of patriarchal motherhood and who are yet to find their own voice and power in the act of mothering. The social expectation for having more children close together in this case could be seen as tool to keep mothers diminished and voiceless for longer. It is my belief however that empowered mothers with strong voices, some of whom have multiple children will revolutionise the world. Mothers can only do this however is they center their own need and well-being alongside that of their children and families, rather than behind it.

06 Dec 2022Amy Taylor-Kabbaz on Being a Work In Progress01:15:11

Get ready to go deep with Amy Taylor-Kabbaz on being a work in progress. I mean, who can’t relate to that in this season of life! In today’s episode we chat about why Amy found it so damn hard to slow down in motherhood and how this might be related to the value we place the role of being a mother. We also explore the idea of the masculine and the feminine, and we talk feminism and motherhood. This was a truly heart felt chat with Amy, who so generously bared her soul. I am so humbled to have been able to share time with her and to now bring this magic to you.

Amy Taylor-Kabbaz is a Best-Selling Author, Speaker, Journalist, Matrescence Activist and Mama of three. She is the best-selling Hay House author of Mama Rising, the host of the ‘The Happy Mama Movement’ podcast (with more than 400,000 downloads), an internationally awarded Life Coach, runs numerous online programs for mothers all over the world, and the creator of the #1 itunes meditations for children ‘Bedtime Explorers’. In 2019, she launched her world first Matrescence Facilitator Training - Mama Rising - sharing her unique formula of coaching and support into mother’s transition through matrescence.

This is a beautiful conversation. I hope that you get out of it as much as I did.

13 Dec 2022Cath Counihan on leaning into imperfection and being the parent she needed in her childhood00:59:07

HOLY MOLY mamas! I actually just don’t even know what to say about this week’s episode with Cath Counihan.

It’s just THAT good. Cath is a London based trauma-informed Integrative Psychotherapist, lecturer, and host of the podcast Grow Yourself Up. She is a mother of twin girls and started her practice; Psychotherapy Mum after feeling blindsighted by her own experience of motherhood.

Cath’s work is focused on supporting those who are healing their own childhood trauma and specifically, her expertise is in the emotional journey of parents who did not have their needs met in childhood.

In today’s episode Cath tells us about her own ongoing journey with releasing control and leaning into imperfection. Cath also talks about how she managed her breaking point at 10 months post-partum; childhood trauma and how it shapes us; the lifelong work of building self compassion through reparenting; and how vulnerability has become her greatest strength.

This is a very open, raw, and generous conversation, and I am so grateful to Cath for gifting this to us.

18 Apr 2023Seeds For Your Garden Moving Away From Fear Based Parenting00:12:50

On this episode of Seeds for your garden, I talk about what can happen when we parent from a place of fear. Specifically fear of causing trauma for our children, or of disappointing them. This is something that I am seeing often with the mothers I work with and though it is natural and healthy to act in ways that will not result in trauma for our kids, when our parenting becomes fear based there are a number of ways that this can lead to less than ideal outcomes. I also discuss some reframes that can help shift us from fear based parenting toward parenting in a way that instead centers the experiences we do want our children to have with us.

11 Apr 2023Beth Berry on finding her liberation as a mother amidst a lack of community and a culture of self-sacrifice01:09:59

Beth Berry is the author of the acclaimed book Motherwhelmed. She is a life coach, mother of four daughters, and a revolutionary at heart who spends much of her time supporting and encouraging women in moving toward their fullest potential.

In this beautiful and at times confronting conversation with Beth, she takes us through her experience of becoming a mother at the tender age of 17. We talked
about the cost to her wellbeing as a result of having her identity and purpose firmly grounded in motherhood, and the burden on modern mothers that results from the lack of community support or village. Beth also shares her thoughts on how we can begin to take back our power as mothers.

03 May 2023Seeds For Your Garden - Redefining Motherhood with the Power of "And"00:17:55

In this episode of seeds for your garden, I discuss the power of the word "AND", and how it can help us access greater self-compassion and reduce guilt and shame in our mothering journey. "And" refers to the idea that two seemingly opposite things can both be true at the same time. For example, I can love my children deeply and still need time away from them to recharge and take care of myself.

In this episode I explore how patriarchal motherhood ideals can lead to black and white, all-or-nothing thinking causing internal conflict, guilt, shame, and burnout, and how embracing to begin embracing the power of "and" to help us move away from these ideals and create a more empowering and liberating experience of motherhood.

23 May 2023A Round Table Chat on Realigning Fatherhood: Bridging the gap between words and actions01:15:38

This week, I’m bringing you a different kind of episode, where I’m joined by Mike Dyson and Erin Spahr in a thought-provoking discussion on an issue that struck a chord with my instagram audience: when fathers define themselves as "family men" but their actions tell a different story. Mike and Erin bring their unique perspectives to shed light on why this might be happening, the consequences of this misalignment, and how fathers can find support to change.

Mike is the founder of Good Blokes Co, which empowers men and boys to break down restrictive gender norms and to step up as leaders of a healthier culture of masculinity.

Erin is a licensed counsellor who approaches perinatal mental health from a social justice feminist lens. She is known as the Feminist Mom Therapist on Instagram and is also a cofounder of Therapists In Action, a collective of mental health professionals who advocate for social justice and liberation.

In this episode we discuss:

-  The qualities a man who is living in alignment with being a family man would possess, and the cost to women who aren’t receiving these from their partner.

-  How men are socialised to act in ways that are at odds with the way they must act as fathers, and often lack a blueprint of how to show up in this role.

-  The evolution of what “providing” for your family means and what this truly entails, and the importance of presence, emotional connection and safety.

-  How to navigate conversations within relationships about this issue, and the importance of using “I” statements and noticing when your nervous system is flooded.

-  The power of therapy, the reasons why men may resist it and the importance of men having support and spaces they can go to be vulnerable and share their experiences.

This is such a rich conversation that I hope will leave you feeling less alone and empower men to redefine their roles as fathers and partners.

30 May 2023Seeds For Your Garden - The Power of Reparenting00:21:37

This week on the podcast I explore the transformative power of re-parenting for mothers (and all parents!). Some of the key points I discuss include:

·      Defining Reparenting: What does reparenting look like? And who is the inner child?

 ·      How reparenting can transform our lived experience of mothering by healing attachment wounds and breaking the cycle of unhealthy relating.

 ·      Cultivating Self-Compassion.

 ·      Reconnecting with Desires and Needs as a vital step in your reparenting journey.

 ·      How reparenting reduces how often we feel triggered and get stuck in anger.

·      My three key steps to begin your reparenting journey.

I hope this episode has given you a better understanding of why reparenting is such a powerful tool for us as parents. You deserve a mothering experience where your needs are held up side by side with those of the rest of your family.

06 Jun 2023Fiona Weaver on Quieting the noise and tuning into the needs of her baby00:55:57

I am so happy to be bringing you this conversation with my dear friend Fiona Weaver.

Fiona Weaver is social worker with expertise in perinatal mental health and a passion for providing education about biologically normal infant sleep. She is a mother of two, very soon to be three, and is the woman behind Mama Matters, and the Mama Chatters podcast. Through her work, she is shaking up the mainstream sleep industry with compassion and integrity, providing parents with the confidence, validation and honest sleep support they deserve.

In this beautiful chat, Fiona opens up about her pre-parenthood expectations, the unexpected revelations she encountered as a mother, and her transformative journey of surrender and acceptance. She candidly describes the constant balancing act between following her own instincts and responding to her baby's needs, while also navigating the influx of advice often given to first-time moms. Together, we explore the trials of motherhood, the influence of ego in parenting, and the innate desire to conform and be accepted by peers. Fiona graciously imparts her wisdom on embracing imperfection, relying on intuition, the pitfalls of martyrdom, and her most significant areas of personal growth since embarking on motherhood.

I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it.

13 Jun 2023Seeds For Your Garden - Being With & Processing Grief00:21:54

I’ve got something a little bit different for you on this episode of seeds for your garden! There have been big things moving within me in the last little while, and the theme has been grief. Grief is one of the many things that we often don’t know how to process because we weren’t given a good blueprint of how to do so by our parents and our community. In our modern world, grief is an emotion that is often avoided or suppressed – but the truth is that we need to feel it to heal it.

Grief is also an emotion that many mothers know well. At many points along our journey, grief is with us whether that be a pregnancy or birth that didn’t go to plan, the end of a breastfeeding journey, or a breastfeeding journey that never eventuated, a relationship that buckles under the weight of parenting, or when our babies finally begin their schooling life. Grief is a constant in all of our lives. So this week, I am sharing with you a guided practice to help you be with and process the grief that may be moving within you.

Guided practices like these make up a significant part of my work and are a core component of my group coaching program: The Rebirth. If you are curious about this work, you can head to the link below to find out more and register for the waitlist for my next intake which will be very soon later in June.

I hope this episode provides just what you are needing at this time. Go gently with yourself.

20 Jun 2023Laura Danger on Finding Her Identity, Pandemic Parenting, & Letting Go Of Control In The Home00:56:55

Hey everyone! My guest this week is Laura Danger.

Laura is a Licensed Educator, Certified Fair Play Facilitator, coach and creator who uses her platform to advocate for quality connections and equal partnerships.  If you already follow her on Instagram or tiktok, you’ll know that Laura pulls no punches when it comes to dissecting the cultural norms that keep women oppressed in relationships – so of course I was so curious to talk to her and hear how motherhood has evolved for her and how it may have influenced the work she does now.

We had such a beautiful conversation about her struggle with addiction in her teens, her experience of becoming a mother, navigating the pandemic, the work of letting go of the perfect mother ideologies, and how this led her to the fair play method.

This was a gorgeous conversation and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

04 Jul 2023Dr Kyla Smith on Softening, Surrender and Breaking Away from the “Good Girl” Archetype01:01:09

Join me this week as I talk to Dr, Kyla Smith, a Paediatric Dietitian and Feeding Specialist,  a  mum of two and founder of the Baby, Toddler and Family Mealtimes online memberships. She supports parents to feed their children with confidence, so they grow up loving food and mealtimes.

In our conversation, Kyla opens up about her journey from living a fast-paced, achievement-orientated life, to embracing the transformative role of being a mother. What I especially loved about our conversation was when Kyla talk about how her identity of being a “good girl” has shaped her parenting experience and been challenged along the way.

Some other themes we touched on include:

·      whether a “right way” to parent exists & letting go of unrealistic expectations

·      the process of learning to tune into what feels good for you and your family.

·      finding a sense of safety within the surrender that comes with being a mother

·      reframing our ever-changing identity as a mother in terms of evolution rather than loss.

·      And, the importance of recognising the social and cultural context of our experiences as mothers.

This was a juicy conversation and and I hope you get as much value from listening to this conversation as I did having it.

11 Jul 2023Seeds For Your Garden – Asking for Help00:14:29

In this week’s episode of Seeds For Your Garden, I discuss why, as mothers, we often find it so hard to ask for help, and what we can do about it.

In my recent conversation with Laura Danger (you can listen to the episode here), we talked about the experience of pandemic parenting, and it got me thinking about how we access support, and why we sometime struggle to. Much as the pandemic amplified these issues, and meant that we were out of practice in asking for help, this is an issue which predates the pandemic and runs a lot deeper, and it’s something I see come up time and time again with my clients.

In this episode, I unpack the reasons why we don’t ask for help, including social and family expectations, guilt, fear of judgement or of being a burden, and patriarchal motherhood ideology. I also discuss what we can do to take steps in this area, in the hope that it might help to move you closer to asking for support where it exists when you need it. I also touch on my own experience of becoming a mother and my journey of peeling back the layers of independence, and accepting that my need for community, connection and support isn’t a weakness.

The books I reference in this episode are:

- The Gift of Imperfection – Brene Brown
- How To Do The Work – Dr. Nicole LePera
- Adults of Emotionally Immature Parents – Lindsay Gibson
- No Bad Parts – Richard Schwartz

18 Jul 2023Tamica Wilder on Radical Self-Love & Embracing Her Erotic Self as a Mother00:40:00

Hi Mamas. This week, my guest is Tamica Wilder, Australia’s leading Sexologist for Mums, author, and Founder of The Orgasmic Mama. Through her work and the many resources, courses, and retreats she offers through The Orgasmic Mama, Tamica teaches women the tools and frameworks to create sex-positive households for them and their families, and facilitates women to re-attune to the wisdom of their bodies and to shamelessly seek better sex and pleasure.

A while back, Tamica chatted to the mothers in my Rebirth program, and her session was incredibly valuable to the women involved, so I’m excited to have her here again to share her experiences and wisdom with you all.

In this conversation, Tamica talks about her personal transition into motherhood and the importance of normalising and making space for the changes we experience in our identities when we become mothers. We talk about how Tamica works with women and mothers, and discuss the power of embracing the new version of yourself, reacquainting yourself with who you are now sexually, challenging patriarchal ideals of what a mother ‘should’ be as it pertains to sexuality, and how these shifts can ultimately lead to more pleasure, radical self-love and acceptance.

Tamica is doing such important work and I’m excited to share this conversation with you.

25 Jul 2023Seeds For Your Garden - Mothering Without A Blueprint00:19:30

In this solo episode, I delve into the challenging journey of mothering without a clear blueprint. Many women find themselves in this position, either due to the absence of a maternal role model or their desire to parent differently than their own upbringing. We discuss the importance of inner work before and during motherhood, the struggles of healing while parenting, and finding hope and support in this unique path of mothering.

Some of the key points in this episode include:

·      Doing inner work before becoming a parent & how motherhood can bring new insights and challenges to the healing process.

 ·      The Reality of Mothering Without a Clear Blueprint

 ·      The burden and challenge of reparenting oneself while parenting a child & the hope amidst the challenge.

 ·      The Importance of Taking Breaks from Healing Work

 ·      Where to seek support

01 Aug 2023Alita Blanchard on Embracing Imperfection, Navigating Infant Loss, and Her Awakening as a Woman and Mother00:59:39

Hi everyone, this week I chat to Alita Blanchard, who is a Parent Coach and Founder of Theawaremama.com.au We first connected through Instagram, where I relate to so much of her content and energy, and I’m excited to be bringing this conversation with her to you today.

Through her work, Alita holds space for mothers and helps them soften their high expectations of themselves and gently learn new skills to help them feel more safe, seen, soothed and secure, so that they can offer the same connection and co-regulation to their children.

During our discussion, Alita opens up about her experience of motherhood and the profound awakening it brought with it, describing it as “the ultimate breakdown” and the catalyst behind deep personal growth. She shares with me the insights that motherhood provided her with, surrounding her attachment style, emotional suppression, and the elements of herself and her life that weren’t aligned with her true authenticity. We also discuss Alita’s contrasting experiences of parenting her different children, as well as the heartbreaking grief she endured following the loss of her fourth child, which was yet another portal of change and introspection.

In this conversation we also discuss the importance of self-compassion in mothering, embracing imperfection, the inherent flaws in so many schools of thought with regards to parenting that perpetuate the myth of “the perfect mother” and how this can create shame, the role attachment theory can play in how we parent, and we define what “village” means to us when it comes to child-rearing, the different ways this can look and why it is so important when it comes to support.

This is a rich conversation and I hope you get as much value from Alita’s perspective and wisdom that I did.

15 Aug 2023Naomi Chrisoulakis: Expectations vs. Reality in Motherhood, Embracing Self-Compassion, and the Journey of Trial, Error & Attunement01:05:53

Hi everyone, this week I chat to Naomi Chrisoulakis, certified post-natal Doula, podcast host and founder of Cocoon by Naomi, a beautiful resource through which Naomi offers mothers the nourishment they need and the nurturing they deserve.

In this discussion, we delve into Naomi’s upbringing and her reflections of it, discussing how various elements of her childhood and early adulthood has affected her on her mothering journey. We discuss Naomi’s optimistic expectations of motherhood prior to becoming a parent, and the jarring contrast between this and her lived reality of the experience, resulting in feelings of failure and shame that so many of us can relate to. We discuss how Naomi came through this, the power of having the harder sides of motherhood validated and the importance of self-compassion, remembering that we are all learning and figuring it out as we go.

We discuss one of Naomi’s biggest shifts in motherhood in learning to tune into herself and what felt right of her family, and the importance of granting yourself permission to allow space for trial and error when it comes to mothering. We also touch of people-pleasing tendencies, how these can manifest in mothering, and the beauty that can be found in pushing against these tendencies and standing in your power, even (and especially when) this can feel wobbly.

Finally, we also discuss the magic that can be found in women’s circles and in sharing with people who may be a few steps ahead on a similar journey.

The overriding message from this conversation and one I hope you will receive too is that you are enough – just being, persevering and trying.

22 Aug 2023Seeds For Your Garden – My partner won’t step up: What do I do with my resentment?00:29:59

In today’s episode I offer my thoughts to a listener question. This mother asks how to move beyond resentment when her partner (the father) refuses to step up as a parent despite many conversations where she expresses her feelings and needs. This is a really big question and of course there is always more nuance to these situations that I can possibly account for, but I give it my best shot. Many mothers find themselves in this situation, so if this sounds like your life – then please know you are not alone. In discussing my thoughts on this, I explore how patriarchy is implicated, some of the possible benefits for fathers behaving this way, some ideas on where to go next, and finally, I suggest the often avoided reality that sometimes we simply outgrow relationships.

I also want to let you know that I have an earlier episode on this similar topic that I recorded as a round table conversation with Mike Dyson and Erin Spahr. If you want to dive deeper, please head there after listening to this one as it is slightly different.

29 Aug 2023Amy Molloy on Redefining Success, Welcoming Change and Embracing the Softening01:05:44

Hi mamas. In this episode, I’m joined by Amy Molloy, an award-winning journalist, editor, author and podcast writer, who produces content for some of the biggest names in global publishing. She is the writer behind the hit podcast, The Space, and as well as writing her own content, she coaches writers through her program -The Book Writing Remedy. In addition to her journalistic work, she is also a qualified counsellor, with advanced studies in grief and loss counselling, child development and effective parenting, and mindfulness-based therapies. She uses this knowledge to write trauma-informed content, with the focus of her work being on storytelling for healing.

In this conversation, we discuss Amy’s evolving perception of her own success since becoming a mother, how this has been challenged along the way, and how it’s led to a redefining of what success means to her in this new phase of her life. We discuss the way parenthood inevitably changes you, and how it’s through embracing this change, rather than resisting it, that you can then harness the many strengths that are nurtured through this role. We also discuss the importance of being recognised as your whole self, including your identity as a ‘mother’ within the workplace and professional life, and owning this boldly rather than downplaying this.

Amy also shares her lived experience of how being a mother has, in many ways, shaped her career for the better and to more fulfilling ends, and how being a mother has created a softening in her, which has been an asset to the work that she does. We also touch on grief, the fragility of life, and how this relates to parenthood.

I so enjoyed speaking to Amy and I hope you get the same value from her perspectives as I did. Enjoy mamas.

05 Sep 2023Seeds For Your Garden - The Magic of Being Heard in Hard Seasons of Parenting00:18:32

Hi mamas!

This is a more personal episode than usual as I delve into my current season of parenting – spoiler alert! This season is bloody TOUGH. In this episode, I speak to some of my current challenges and vulnerabilities, reflect on the emotional journey of raising two energetic children, and how I’m navigating my own mental health.

I was inspired to record this chat as I was listening to a voice message from a friend who was thanking me for providing a space for her to be heard and seen in her mothering challenges. We jointly reflected on how relieved we both felt after our conversation and it left me wondering about other mothers in my community that might also be doing it tough in some way. I wondered if hearing that I’m currently in a messy parenting space (and that these phases come and go) might normalise their experience, help them feel less alone and offer them some relief too.  I really hope it does just that.

12 Sep 2023Andrea Bombino on Reimagining Strength & Success, Cultural Influences, and Choosing Joy in Motherhood01:11:26

Hi mamas. Join me this week as I talk to Andrea Bombino, a Career and Business Coach who helps mothers navigate matrescence and step into new mindsets that accommodate their new roles as mothers AND their career aspirations. Andrea’s ethos that motherhood can be done differently shines through our conversation, and I’m so excited to be sharing it with you.

In this conversation, Andrea reflects on her experience of having a baby in the pandemic, and touches on her experience of miscarriage. We discuss Andrea’s background and the various cultural influences that played a role in her upbringing, and her choices to do motherhood differently and break away from some of the ideals and norms she grew up with, especially as they relate to mothering and outdated gender roles. We also discuss the concepts of martyrdom, perfectionism, strength, and the “superwoman”.

Andrea also shares her refreshing approach to taking the path of least resistance in parenting, the many merits of this, and the importance of giving yourself permission to choose yourself and to choose joy. We also discuss the importance of valuing and honouring whichever season of motherhood and of life you may be currently in, and acceptance the everchanging cyclical nature of motherhood.

I so enjoyed this refreshing and nourishing conversation with Andrea and I hope you enjoy it too.

26 Sep 2023Dr Veronica Eyo on Embracing Change & Developing the Skill of Mothering with Compassion01:03:06

Hi mama. In this episode of Life After Birth, I’m joined by Veronica Eyo, a maternal mental health therapist who helps mothers as they navigate their motherhood journey, as well as managing symptoms of perinatal mental health.

In this conversation, we discuss Veronica’s experience of becoming a mother, and how her reality differed from her pre-motherhood expectation of what it would be like, particularly in the wake of experiencing a difficult birth, which resulted in her entering motherhood carrying feelings of failure. We explore the problematic belief that women are intrinsically natural mothers, and the importance of instead seeing it as a skill to be learned and honed as you go, developing through observation, practice, and trial and error.

We also discussed:

·      The importance of learning to embrace rest in motherhood and the challenges so many of us face in this, especially those with a background of marginalisation where rest simply isn’t in the makeup of our ancestors and was not always available for them.

·      The importance of embracing the current season of motherhood you are in, and the challenge of having to stay flexible with your values when it comes to motherhood.

·      Honouring past versions of yourself as well as truly valuing the new behaviours, activities and beliefs that come with the act of mothering, in this new season of your life.

·      The challenges of parenting in a way that honours the spirit of your children and how effortful this can be, especially for those who haven’t had experience of this themselves, as there is no blueprint to follow.

I absolutely loved speaking to Veronica and I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation too.

10 Oct 2023Anna Cusack on Reframing The Postpartum Period, The Power of Letting Go and Mothering as Activism00:50:06

Hi mama. In this episode, I’m joined by Anna Cusack, a Doula, Speaker, Author and Podcaster who supports women by providing emotional support, advice, resources and organisational assistance through pregnancy decision-making, birth mapping, postpartum planning, birth debriefing and guidance throughout the early stages of parenting.

In this  conversation, we discuss Anna’s experience of becoming a mother, both in the initial fourth trimester period, and in the months that followed this. We reflect on how the postpartum period is in many ways a lifelong stage, and Anna speaks to her own experience of feeling relatively prepared for the initial fourth trimester period, compared to the later months where she found herself unprepared for the intensity of the period that followed. This was further heightened for Anna by this period of time coinciding with the pandemic.

We also discussed:

·      The power of letting go and surrender, how this relates to so many facets of mothering, & Anna’s own experience of this in relation to both her fertility journey prior to conceiving, and her experience of going into labour with her first child.

·      The need to slow down in motherhood and how Anna’s awareness of her own tendencies to pull against this meant that she resolutely committed to taking rest seriously in her early stages of motherhood, setting boundaries around her activity.

·      Reframing the value of motherhood in society and how mothering is activism in itself in the sense that how we consciously choose to raise our children affects not only their lives & how they navigate the world but also shapes the world in which we all live – & also the balance of holding this whilst also honouring the stage of life you are in and what you have the capacity for.

·      Gender differences in children with regard to privilege, and Anna’s feelings around the implications of this in terms of how to raise her children to be responsible adults.

·      Our shared experience of how motherhood can bring with it an increased sense of confidence with regard to living life authentically, in alignment and with integrity.

… and much much more. I hope you love listening to it as much as I loved having it.

24 Oct 2023Minna Dubin on Rage, Compassion, and Challenging 'Good Mother' Assumptions00:53:33

Hey there mamas and welcome back to another episode of Life After Birth.

In this episode, I’m speaking to Minna Dubin, the Author of ‘Mom Rage: The Everyday Crisis of Modern Motherhood.’ I absolutely loved this book and was so excited to invite Minna to speak with me for this episode. Minna’s writing has been featured in The New York Times, The Times, Salon, Parents, Romper, Oprah Daily, MUTHA Magazine and many other publications. As a leading feminist voice on mom rage, Minna has also appeared on MSNBC, Good Morning America, The Tamron Hall Show, NBC10 Boston and NPR. Minna is from California and lives with her husband and two children.

In this conversation, we talked about Minna’s experience of becoming a mother and what her difficulties were during this time. We talk about rage in motherhood, exploring the social elements that play a role in this and the power of treating your anger with compassion.

We also discussed:

·      The intensity that can come with difficult seasons of motherhood and the importance in having faith and self-belief that you can and will make it through these challenging times. We also discuss the power of drawing on previous experiences of when you have overcome challenging times to help foster this belief.

·      The need for time, space and separateness in mothering and how this is often perceived negatively in our society due to patriarchal internalised modelling that has led to the belief that a ‘good’ mother wants to be around her children and husband all the time and who doesn’t have needs of her own.

·      Minna’s identity as being a bisexual Queer woman married to a cis-man, how becoming a mother intensified this experience and how she used writing to help process her second ‘coming out’ experience once she was a mother, and the part this played in her returning to herself.

-       The internalised belief of the “good mother - good child” association that is held in many facets of our society, and how this can manifest in relation to neurodiversity and behavioural differences in children.

And much more. I hope you feel seen and heard by listening to this conversation, and enjoy it as much as I did.

07 Nov 2023Elly Taylor on her Journey from Undoing to 'Becoming': Relationships, Identity & more00:57:37

Hi mamas. Join me this week as I talk to Elly Taylor, parenthood preparation and relationship specialist and author of the multi-award-winning book Becoming Us, the Couple's Guide to Parenthood, which aims to help couples bridge the gap between the ‘before’ and ‘after’ of parenthood.

In this conversation, Elly talks to me about the disparity between her expectations of motherhood and her lived experience, and how for Elly, her journey to ‘Becoming’ began with an initial period of an ‘undoing’ in the initial years following her having her first child. We discuss Elly’s experience of the changes that occurred in her marriage during her pregnancy and in their early years of navigating parenthood together, and the huge journey she underwent with regard to this through self-development, and seeking true understanding and connection with her partner.

We also discuss:

  • Elly’s experience of growth and finding her voice in motherhood, and how this can initially feel vulnerable and isolating but ultimately leads to deeper, more aligned and more authentic connections.

  • The power of embracing change, rather than resisting it, as it is in fact this resistance that is the real root of pain, and the power of reframing ‘identity loss’ as a form of evolution instead.

  • The need to be gentle with yourself, prioritise self-care, and the need for constant recalibration when it comes to finding a balance between work, mothering and all other facets of life.

  • The social narrative and expectation that motherhood completes a woman, how this perpetuates a belief that motherhood can help to fill a void, and how the reality for so many women is far from this.

I hope the message that comes through in this conversation is one that gives hope to anyone who is currently going through the intensity of some of the relationship issues we discuss here, to know that the foundations being laid now may be what allows you to have more ease in future seasons of your parenthood, like it did for Elly.

14 Nov 2023Seeds For Your Garden - Maternal Instinct: Fact or Fiction?00:34:32

In this solo episode I explore the concept of maternal instinct which fell back onto my radar in recent weeks following a viral video featuring Maggie Dent and Kate Richie. I discuss my own thoughts on this topic, recent research on the neurobiology of the mother and father brain, patriarchal implications; and emphasise the importance of understanding parenting to be a skill that transcends one’s sex or gender and is not dictated by biology alone.

05 Dec 2023Jessie McGarry on Young Motherhood, Self-Reparenting, and Embracing 'Figureoutable'00:52:47

Hi mamas. This week I talk to Jessie McGarry, Doula and Founder of The Bright Birth Company. Jessie is a mother of four (she was pregnant with her fourth child at the time of recording) and walks with women on their pregnancy, birth and postpartum journeys as a doula, providing soulful guidance and reminding women they have all the power they need within them. She also mentors other birth workers to create thriving, nourishing businesses supporting over 40 births and working with over 100 women on their pregnancy and postpartum journeys.

In today's episode, we delve into Jessie's mothering journey with a particular focus on her experiences as a young mother, having welcomed her first child at 23. Jessie share what she found challenging about this, as well as the benefits that her youth provided — like open-mindedness and adaptability — and the impact this had on her parenting experience.

We also cover:

-       The challenge motherhood brings with regard to the inner work required in the journey, and the work of reparenting yourself as you parent your children.

-       The role of play, fun and silliness in motherhood, and some practical methods you can use to connect with your inner child and find out what it is that they are needing more of in your life.

-       Trusting in your ability to figure things out and learn as you go, and the gift that it is to your child when you can show them you doing this, so that they have permission to also be human and make mistakes.

-       Jessie’s journey to becoming a doula and her love of her work.

Jessie has a refreshing approach to motherhood, and I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

Welcome back mamas! This is the final episode for 2023, and it's all about inviting more ease and joy into the holiday season.

13 Feb 2024Zoe Blaskey on Self-Compassion and Backing Yourself in Motherhood00:54:05

Hi mamas. Join me for this beautiful conversation with Zoe Blaskey, mum of two and the woman behind the Motherkind Podcast. Zoe invited me to be a guest on her podcast a few months ago, and so I was excited to return the invite and have her come on Life After Birth to share more of her story and insights with you all.

In this conversation, Zoe shares with me about her own upbringing, and reflects on the ‘credits’ and ‘debits’ of her childhood and the role they played in her life and the forming of her core patterns. We discuss her transition into mothering, and explore what Zoe calls her perfectionist tendencies and her inner critic during her early years of mothering.  Zoe talks about the importance and power of self-compassion, re-parenting yourself, and nurturing a kinder inner voice, for your own wellbeing but also to pass this on as a ‘credit’ to our own children.

We also discuss:

-       The story behind Zoe starting the Motherkind Podcast and platform.

-       The shift that can come from parts work and in finding compassion for the parts within.

-       The importance of decision-making, implementing boundaries and living a life of alignment and authenticity.

27 Feb 2024Kelly Wright on Grieving the Motherhood Journey We Didn’t Have00:59:54

Hi mamas. In this episode of Life After Birth, I am joined by Kelly Wright who has recently joined me at Life After Birth in a therapist capacity. Kelly is a mother and therapist trained in social work, attachment theory, nutrition, internal family systems, polyvagal work, and I’m so happy to have her on the team.

In this raw and vulnerable conversation, Kelly shares some of the challenges she has experienced in her mothering journey, and the disparity between what she expected to come with motherhood and the reality of her lived experience.  We talk about the dark and messy places she has traversed to find her strength and inner knowing as a mother, and the anger and grief that comes with raising a child who experiences the world in more challenging ways. We also touch on the often-complex decision of whether or not to expand your family.

Other parts of our conversation include:

  • Kelly’s experience of anxiety, OCD and eating disorders during in her twenties, and how this affected her perception of her resilience and capacity to be a mother.

  • Kelly’s initial fear about being a mother and how this shifted over time.

  • The power in shifting your perspective to view what you might have seen as your weaknesses and vulnerabilities, to viewing them as signs of your resilience and strength.

  • The need for mothers to be held, and the importance of seeking help when things are hard; that things don’t need to be extreme to seek help, and that this support can come in many forms, such as therapy and women’s circles.

And sooooooo much more. I hope you get as much comfort from this conversation as I did from having it.

*If you are an Australian resident and are looking for some support as you mother, Kelly has availability to support you now. You can find out more about her and book in a session here: https://www.lifeafterbirth.com.au/kelly

12 Mar 2024Elyse McNeil on Navigating the Mental Load and Embracing Rest as a Mother00:57:16

Hi mamas. This week I talk to Dr. Elyse McNeil, Mental Load Expert and Founder of Share to Thrive, who is passionate about helping couples thrive in their relationships by providing them with strategies to help them navigate the mental load of parenthood.

In this beautiful conversation, we discuss Elyse’s preparation for her own transition into mothering, and the kinds of conversations she and her husband had to facilitate sharing the load.  We discuss the importance of open and intentional communication early on to avoid unconscious agreements that often lead the default roles that are socially prescribed to us.

We also discuss:

-       The importance of both parents being involved in the day to day load of parenting, enabling them both to build skills and confidence together.

-       How exploring patriarchal motherhood ideologies can help us distinguish between imposed expectations and our personal standards, leading to self-growth and the release of unrealistic ideals.

-       Whether its really possible to split a load 50/50.

-       The importance of creating permission to relinquish the need to be productive and to embrace rest in motherhood, and how this needs to be made a priority, rather than an afterthought.

Elyse has such beautiful insights and I hope you enjoy this rich conversation.

26 Mar 2024Renee Cachia On Dropping The “Needless Woman” Archetype01:01:52

Hi mamas. Join me as I speak with Renee Cachia, experienced psychologist and founder of Inner Bloom Psychology Practice. Renee is committed to improving the lives of families by empowering parents with psychoeducation and creating environments for young people to thrive from the inside out. She is a mum to her 2-year-old daughter and, at the time of recording this episode, was pregnant with her second child.

In this conversation, we hear about Renee’s journey as a mother; her experience of reinventing herself, and the importance of identifying, and then advocating, for your needs. This is something so many of us find difficult due social and cultural expectations which often position mothers as “needless women” who exist only to care and nurture those around them.

We also discuss:

-       Renee’s experience of having a pandemic baby and the challenges that she navigated during a period of the unknown.

-       The importance of self-compassion in mothering, and reframing ‘self-care’ as mothering the mother within us.

-       Leaning into the tenderness of the matrescence process

-       And the why understanding your own values is key to mothering on your terms.

We also share some mantras and mindset shifts that have helped us change our perspective and help regulate our nervous system in times of dysregulation.

09 Apr 2024Ali Heppell on Being a Motherless Mother and Navigating Grief00:52:14

Hi mamas. In this episode of Life After Birth, I am joined by Ali Heppell, a postpartum doula, matrescence educator and guide, and women’s circle facilitator. She is also a wife and mum to two boys.

In this conversion, we discuss Ali’s experience of becoming a mother after losing her own mother to cancer just a few years prior. We discuss Ali’s experience of the grief of losing her mother, her honouring of this grief and how it shaped her own mothering journey. Ali shares her immense loss and longing for her mother, and her journey of going inwards and seeking solace and comfort in parenting herself.

We also discuss:

  • Grief, how it changes and evolves over time, and the power of self-compassion, mindfulness and sharing, to connect to the shared common humanity of the experience.

  • The ‘unravelling’ and the ‘becoming’ of matrescence, and how motherhood can so often catalyse a huge journey of growth, a shifting of priorities and a change of identities, and the parallels of this with grief.

  • The seasons of matraescence, and the power of knowing in the darker and more challenging times, that things are everchanging and it won’t always feel this hard.

  • The power of self-compassion in motherhood; mothering yourself, being kind to yourself, and gently nudging your inner voice in a kinder and more compassionate direction.

This is a beautiful, vulnerable and raw conversation, and I hope it brings comfort and strength to you mamas.

23 Apr 2024Chrissy Powers on moving away from the purist ‘good girl’ archetype, and reparenting ourselves while parenting00:47:17

Hi mamas. Today on the podcast, I’m joined by Chrissy Powers, a licensed marriage and family therapist, mum, wife, writer and embodiment coach. I’ve been following Chrissy on social media for quite some time and I just love her beautiful, authentic, warm presence, which shines through in this conversation.

In this episode, we discuss Chrissy’s background and some of her early internalised ideas of being the ‘good girl’, how this showed up in her adulthood and her mothering, and her departure from this archetype over time, allowing her to redefine herself according to her own ideals in her thirties and into her forties.

We also discuss purity culture and Chrissy’s experience of growing up in a small evangelical Christian church, the ideals that she was raised with, and the shame, guilt and isolation this culture can create. We discuss this in relation to Chrissy’s experience of parenting her children, and where the line is between what is and what isn’t our job as parents.

We also discuss:

  • How our children shouldn’t and can’t be the complete source of our fulfilment, and our experiences of needing work and other pursuits to feel fully whole, which ultimately then allows us to give more to our families and connect with our children in a more present way

  •  Chrissy’s traumatic birth experience and the start of her mothering journey, and the disparity between what so many of us expect motherhood to be, and our lived experiences of it, and the significance and importance of having support in those early stages

  • Consciously choosing to parent in a different way to how you were parented, and the immense work involved in having to heal the parts of ourselves that may still be hurting from our childhood experiences, to then allow us to parent in a different way for our own children, to imprint a new legacy into our family.

  •  Getting rid of the ‘good child’ archetype, which is fed into by the ‘good girl’ archetype and the thinking that our child’s behaviour reflects on us, which is not a responsibility for our children to hold

And much more.  This was a beautiful conversation and I hope that you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed having it.

07 May 2024Rachael Shepard-Ohta on Taking The Pressure off Baby Sleep and The Relinquishing of Control in Motherhood00:45:38

Hi mamas. Today on the podcast, I’m joined by Rachael Shepard-Ohta, who is a certified sleep consultant, a parent educator, content creator, podcaster, mother of three and founder of Hey Sleep Baby. I had the pleasure of being on Rachael’s podcast, No One Told Us, last year and I was so happy to have the opportunity to have another wonderful conversation with her here.

In this episode, we discuss Rachael’s expectations prior to becoming a mother and how her lived experience compared to this, and in particular, the relinquishing of control that comes with parenthood and how this can bring out a part of ourselves that we may not have had much contact with prior to becoming a parent.

We also talk about Rachael’s journey to starting Hey Sleepy Baby, following her own negative experience with sleep training her first child as a response to outside pressure surrounding her baby’s sleep, and the passion this ignited in her to challenge the status quo of baby sleep advice.

We also discuss:

-       The versions of ourselves from before we had children, the transition parenthood brings and how, when we feel resistance or struggles in our mothering, it is often due to these parts of our former selves that are still there and are needing to be seen.

-       The challenge of balancing the requirements of career and work alongside motherhood, and in particular both mine and Rachael’s experience of running our own businesses and the challenges this can present in terms of compartmentalising and being present with our children

-       Rachael’s experience of postnatal anxiety following the birth of her first child, which was contributed to by the stress and external pressures surrounding her baby’s sleep. We reflect on the preoccupation with baby sleep in these early phases and how this stems from the lack of support within our culture.

-       The power of trusting yourself, trusting your mothering, and knowing that nothing that you’re dealing with is forever.

And much more. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

21 May 2024Penny Moodie on Parenting With OCD, Self-Regulation and Reframing Failure As Evolution00:42:10

Hi mamas. Today on the podcast, I’m joined by Penny Moodie, a writer, OCD advocate and mum of three. In 2023, she wrote the incredible book, ‘The Joy Thief’, sharing her personal journey and the stories of fellow OCD sufferers, exploring OCD stigmas and treatments with raw honesty and zero judgement.

In this conversation, we talk about Penny’s experience of becoming a mother, and in particular her experience of this while suffering with OCD. Undiagnosed at the time of her first child’s birth, she reflects on how the transition to parenthood prompted her to seek diagnosis and help, wanting to be fully present for her son.

We also discuss:

  • Penny’s preparation for motherhood, and her reflections on how her OCD consumed so much of her energy and brain space that she spent comparatively little time thinking about and preparing for the shifts and changes that parenthood would bring.

  • How OCD showed up for Penny in the early stages of her motherhood, and how perinatal OCD can affect both men and women.

  • The significance of finding the right therapist, with the right interest or specialism in what you are seeking help for, and the importance of attuning to your intuition and sense of knowing when it comes to what is working for you, and having the confidence to seek an alternative therapist if you don’t feel it’s a good fit.

  • The role of self-regulation in parenting and how, by nurturing this skill and the ability to repair when we don’t respond how we would like, we can see real change and growth. We also discuss this in the content OCD, and how self-regulation requires you to sit in uncomfortable emotions.

  • Embracing failure as an integral part of growth, and therefore reframing hard and challenging experiences as ones that will ultimately help us evolve.

And much more. I hope this beautiful conversation lands with you today.

04 Jun 2024Jacqueline Kelly on Losing and Meeting yourself in Motherhood00:51:55

Hi mamas. Today on the podcast, I’m joined by Jacqueline Kelly, a matrescence coach who supports mothers who feel like they’ve lost themselves in motherhood. Founding Our Brave Hearts, Jacqueline works to challenge the unrealistic standards of motherhood that we are encouraged to aspire to and to support mums in rediscovering and reclaiming their confidence.

In this beautiful conversation, Jacqueline reflects on her own journey of matrescence and her transition from the freedom, adventure and spontaneity of living overseas to having her sense of self imploded when she became a mother. We discuss the romanticism of her notions of motherhood prior to having children, the identity crisis she experienced within the reality of it, where she has experienced the most growth along the journey, and the duality of the joys and the losses of motherhood.

We also discuss:

  • The experience of meeting yourself in motherhood by seeing parts of yourself in your children, the complexities of this and how the parts of our children that we struggle to hold are often the very things we never had held for us in our own childhoods.

  • Privilege and how the abundance of the times we live in allow us the space to have awareness and insight to be intentional on how we raise our families and create a different future for them.

  • The complexity and the emotional load of motherhood and the importance of having safe spaces to talk and work through these feelings, voicing our lived experiences in order to survive in, and surrender to, the process.

  • How deeply entranced idealised values and norms around mothering still are, and how the patriarchal structures of the societies we live in are so inextricably linked with our experience as mothers in this world.

And much more. I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation today as much as I loved having it.

18 Jun 2024Joy Netanya Thompson on Finding Completeness with One Child and Befriending Her Parts Within00:57:44

Hi mamas. Today, I’m excited to have Joy Netanya Thompson on the podcast. Joy is a writer who covers the intersection of motherhood, culture and identity and whose writing has appeared on sites like Parents, Motherwell, Romper, Coffee & Crumbs, and she’s also the author of the substack newsletter, Midweek Joy. She lives in LA with her husband and 8-year-old daughter.

This is a rich and raw episode where Joy shares with me her experience of becoming a mother, the traumatic birth of her daughter and how this, amongst other factors including postpartum depression, shaped her decision to have no more children. We discuss the inner conflict this decision has brought about for us both, the considerations of both our own needs and those of our existing children in this decision, and how the lack of societal and personal support plays a role in this too.

In this beautiful conversation, we also discuss:

  • The journey to knowing yourself better through motherhood, in terms of the mirrors your children hold up which allow you to see yourself in a more honest and truthful light than what you might have experienced before. We discuss parts work and the journey of seeing and accepting the different parts of ourselves that live within us and have been shaped by our own childhoods.

  • Our experiences of mothering without a blueprint, how this can play out with regard to our desire to parent differently, and the process of reparenting while parenting.

  • Joy’s experience of birth, her feelings of failure surrounding it and her journey towards acceptance. We also touch on her experience with EMDR as treatment for this trauma.

  • The beauty of the moments where we delight in our children, the honour of having a front-row seat on our children’s lives, and the importance of them feeling this love above all else.

And so much more. I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation today as much as I loved having it.

02 Jul 2024Lucina McKimm on the Challenges of Sharing The Load in Parenthood, and the Emotional Intensity of Motherhood01:05:21

Hi mamas. Today on the podcast I’m so happy to be joined by my lovely friend and podcast host, mother, writer and producer, Lucinda McKimm. She is the host of the podcast Ready Or Not, and the co-host of Witching Hour, and a mother of two.

In this conversation, we discuss Lucinda’s experience of becoming a mother and how, despite her expectations that the day-to-day of the role would be challenging, she was not prepared her for the emotional intensity of motherhood, in terms of the rawness of the experience, the increased sense of vulnerability and exposure, and the shedding of layers that motherhood can catalyse within us. We also reflect on our own growth through our respective motherhood journeys, on our increasing resilience and perspective, and our newfound appreciation for our capabilities.

We also discuss:

  • The impact of parenthood on relationships and how, even with a supportive and present father, so much of the physical and mental load falls to the mother, and the nuances in how us and our partners can experience the same things so differently.

  • The transition of going from one to two children, something Lucina has recently experienced since the birth of her second child, and the feelings of overwhelm and guilt this can create.

  • The importance of self-compassion when we go through hard times and how, although others may be suffering, this doesn’t negate what you might be going through, as everyone has different access to support, different nervous systems, different past experiences and capacities.

And so much more. We touch on so many facets of motherhood in this episode and Lucinda shares so much wisdom. I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation today as much as I enjoyed having it.

16 Jul 2024Haylee Collins on Working Through Maternal Rage and Being Robbed By The Pandemic01:06:01

Hi mamas. Today on the podcast I’m joined by Haylee Collins, who is a book publisher and creator of the magazine, Howl, which is how I came to know her. Howl is an incredible magazine that explores the intersection of motherhood and creativity, and was born out of her own observations of watching and speaking to other artists, writers, designers and photographers who are also mothers about how they occupy both of those identities at the same time.

In this episode we discuss Haylee’s experience of becoming a mother and, in particular, her experience of contending with maternal rage. This was exacerbated by postpartum depression, being robbed of the experience she had hoped for by the pandemic, and the let down from the romanticism of the notion of motherhood that society so often creates.

We also discuss this in the context of the anger we observed and were at the receiving end of from our parents when we were children, how we relate to this now, and the need for compassion for them and for ourselves as we navigate this with our own children.

We also discuss:

  • Raising boys as a feminist and having to unpick the one dimensionality of masculinity that is pushed onto boys early on, as well as how to add nuance to some of the shorthand we apply to feminism with regard to girls which excludes boys from the conversation.

  • Choosing to have no more children and the factors that play into this decision, including the need to honour our own boundaries, energy and capacity. We discuss the weight of this decision and the helpful and not-so-helpful advice around this subject.

  • Haylee’s experience of pandemic parenting and the loss of the opportunity for her to share her son with her loved ones due to the restrictions, which was further heightened by her decision that this would be her only child. We also discuss how this played into the anger she experienced.

This is such a raw conversation and I’m so grateful to Haylee for sharing her experience so candidly. I hope you get as much from listening to this conversation as I did from having it.

30 Jul 2024Sarah Ashton on Navigating Hyper-Focus Around Sleep and Finding Your Authenticity Through Matrescence00:48:59

Hi mamas. Today I’m so excited to be joined by the wonderful Sarah Ashton, a mental health occupational therapist whose work beautifully blends motherhood studies with occupational therapy, providing support for women as they transition, adapt and transform through matrescence.

In this conversation, Sarah shares her experience of becoming a mother, and in particular we discuss what Sarah calls her hyper-focus around her and her baby’s sleep, and how this impacted her experience of mothering in those early days. We also discuss what eventually allowed Sarah to shift out of this, when this level of hyper vigilance became too impossible to sustain, something I too resonated with.

We also discuss:

  • Sarah’s expectations of being a mother prior to becoming one, her initial expectations that her baby would fit in alongside her life and work schedule, and then he lived experience and the reality of what unfolded compared to this.

  • Sarah’s sense of ‘striving’ in her early phase of mothering to meet both her and other’s expectations of herself in this new role, and how her changing location when they moved house allowed her the space to free herself from some of these and allowed for a new start.

  • Sarah’s experience of coming back to authenticity in motherhood, and how becoming a mother gave her the gift of permission, safety, comfort and acceptance of who she is.

I so enjoyed this conversation and I hope you feel seen, heard and held from listening to it.

13 Aug 2024Danielle Facey on Loss, Birth Trauma and Finding Her Way Back To Herself In Motherhood00:53:33

Hi mamas. Today on the podcast I am joined by Danielle Facey, also known as the breastfeeding mentor. Danielle is an author, speaker and a fierce advocate of breastfeeding empowerment.

In this beautiful and courageous conversation, Danielle shares her story of becoming a mother; one that includes her experience of miscarriage, birth trauma and her journey back to herself. We discuss how Danielle's experiences of loss and trauma influenced her need for control and resulted in a heightened sense of vigilance when it came to her baby, exacerbated by cultural pressure in the western world. Danielle shares with me her journey to self-acceptance and self-compassion, and “owning” her motherhood” rather than shying away from it.

We also discuss:

  • Danielle’s miscarriage and the subsequent breakdown of her toxic marriage, which she now views as a turning point, with a sense of her loss being a catalyst to setting her free. We discuss the nuance of this, and how profoundly our children change us, both our children here on earth with us and the ones who didn’t make it as well.

  • The traumatic birth of Danielle’s son, her initial feelings of failure and grief over her c-section, and the interplay between this and her determination to breastfeed, viewing it as a way to ‘compensate’ for her perceived failures at the start of her son’s life.

  • Danielle’s challenges and lack of support she experienced when it came to breastfeeding, and how this prompted her to support other women with this through her work.

Danielle is kindly offering you 50% off any of the guides on her site with the discount code PODCAST50. Check out the links below to explore her valuable resources.

This is the last episode before I take a short break. I’ll be returning in September with more incredible conversations for you to listen to. During this break, I’ll be re-sharing some of the most popular episodes from the podcast so far for you to enjoy.

27 Aug 2024REPLAY - Minna Dubin on Rage, Compassion, and Challenging 'Good Mother' Assumptions00:53:33

*This is a replay series of previously released episodes, as I prepare all new episodes with new guests. This replay series are the top 4 most listener to episodes and although we can't have favourite - they are very loved by me too!*

In this episode, I’m speaking to Minna Dubin, the Author of ‘Mom Rage: The Everyday Crisis of Modern Motherhood.’ I absolutely loved this book and was so excited to invite Minna to speak with me for this episode. Minna’s writing has been featured in The New York Times, The Times, Salon, and many other publications.

10 Sep 2024REPLAY - Round Table Chat on Realigning Fatherhood: Bridging the gap between words and actions01:15:38

*This is a replay series of previously released episodes, as I prepare all new episodes with new guests. New episodes will be back on the regular by Oct 2024. This replay series are the top 4 most listener to episodes and although we can't have favourite - they are very loved by me too!*

This week, I’m joined by Mike Dyson and Erin Spahr in a thought-provoking discussion on an issue that struck a chord with my instagram audience: when fathers define themselves as "family men" but their actions tell a different story.

03 Sep 2024Tracy Gillett on the Power of Self-Trust in Motherhood01:09:39

Hi mamas!

Today I am joined by the wonderful Tracy Gillett, an adventure-loving mum, writer, and advocate for natural parenting. You might know her as the founder of Raised Good, an inspiring platform that empowers parents to trust the voice of their intuition. Tracy is also the author of "The Lost Art of Natural Parenting" and the host of the annual Raised Good Online Parenting Summit.

In this powerful conversation, Tracy and I explore her journey into motherhood, her passion for what she calls natural parenting, and how she’s navigated the ups and downs along the way. We dive deep into her personal experiences, from the joys and challenges of motherhood to the profound growth she’s experienced along the way.

We also discuss:

  • Tracy shares her journey to motherhood, her struggles with endometriosis, and the emotional rollercoaster that came with trying to conceive. She opens up about the decisions she had to make, including the moment she decided to listen to her body.
  • The importance of tuning into our own instincts as mothers and how learning to trust herself has been key to Tracy’s parenting approach.
  • Reflecting on the emotional aspects of parenting and how stepping into discomfort has led to her greatest growth as a mother.
  • We discuss the concept of surrender in motherhood—letting go of control and embracing the unknown. Tracy shares how this mindset has allowed her to navigate the unpredictable nature of parenting with grace and courage.

Tracy is such a beacon of wisdom, and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to chat with her.

08 Oct 2024What You Need To Know About: How Parts Work Can Support You as You Mother00:29:00

Hi mamas. Today on the podcast, I’m diving into a therapeutic approach that has been a complete game changer for so many of the mothers I work with—Internal Family Systems (IFS). This modality helps us understand the different “parts” within ourselves, heal intergenerational wounds, and cultivate self-leadership. I know many of you are on this path of exploring your inner world, and IFS offers such a profound way to do that.

In this episode, I’ll guide you through:

  • Understanding our mind as an internal family system made up of different parts, each with its own role, feelings, and needs.
  • How our inner parts can show up as we mother. Parenting can often trigger old wounds, and I’ll talk about how our different parts show up during challenging moments.
  • The importance of allowing our calm, curious, compassionate Self to take the lead in parenting and in our lives.
  • How IFS offers us a chance to go back and witness our vulnerable parts with deep compassion and provide them with what they needed but didn’t receive.
  • Simple and practical ways to incorporate parts work into your daily routine.

This is a rich and meaningful practice that helps us not only reparent ourselves but also break cycles and shift the patterns we pass down to our children. You won’t want to miss this one.

01 Oct 2024Jane McFadden on Mothering with Neurodivergence, and the Challenge of Slowing Down01:01:38

Hi mamas. Join me as I speak with Jane McFadden, mum of three and the woman behind the ADHD Mums podcast.

In this episode, Jane reflects on her childhood growing up with now-diagnosed ADHD and autism, how this impacted her school years, her approach to work and her experience of becoming a mother. We discuss the struggle that so many of us experience with regards to perfectionism and high-performance, and how this can often be heightened when we become mothers, due to the many societal expectations that exacerbate this. We also discuss Jane’s journey of working on intentionally slowing down, and moving away from using work as a way to avoid sitting with the challenging emotions and feelings that are so often underneath these numbing strategies.

We also discuss:

  • How we can model sitting with emotions for our children too, to equip them with the skills to be able to handle challenging emotions, that so many of us lacked in our own upbringings
  • The power of self-compassion, honouring our needs and well as our family’s, recognising that our behaviours are often in place to keep us safe, and acknowledging that we are each a “works in progress”
  • How we can foster bonding and connection with our children in small ways , that are sustainable
  • The growth opportunity that motherhood can bring, in terms of knowing ourselves more, and learning how to advocate for our needs, as well as our children.

And much more.

22 Oct 2024What You Need To Know About: Mothering During the Transition into Perimenopause00:38:12

What You Need To Know About: Perimenopause and Motherhood

Hi mama.

Today, I'm diving into a topic that doesn't get enough attention: mothering during perimenopause. This is something I've been exploring lately, both through my own experiences and those of the incredible women I work with, so I wanted to shed some light on this often overlooked phase that so many of us may be navigating without even realising it.

In this episode, I discuss:

  • The hormonal changes that occur during this transition period leading up to menopause.
  • How these changes can impact our mind and body, especially when we're raising young children.
  • The common symptoms, signs and feelings of perimenopause.
  • The power of understanding what is happening in our bodies and how that can help us approach this phase with more self-compassion.
  • My own journey of noticing hormonal shifts throughout my cycle and how understanding them has made a difference in how I navigate my relationships and daily life.
  • Drawing connections between the transitions of matrescence and perimenopause.

I hope this episode brings some comfort and insight into your journey. Remember, mama, knowledge is power and you're not alone.

In this powerful episode, Kendra shares her personal journey through motherhood, especially now as a mother of two young children, with her newest little one being just two weeks old!

We discuss her transition into motherhood, the unravelling of her perfectionism, and how she has come to deeply trust herself in this new role. Kendra talks about how the birth of her children has transformed her and how it's helping her grow as both a mother and a woman.

Here's what we cover:

Kendra’s journey into motherhood and the unexpected ways her perfectionism was challenged as she welcomed her first child and now, with her second.

  • The emotional adjustment to life with two children

26 Nov 2024Jayde Couldwell on Embracing Imperfection and Cultivating Resilience and Self Love in Motherhood01:23:37

Hi Mamas.

Today, I have an incredibly special guest, Jayde Couldwell. You may know her as the co-host of Beyond the Bump and Beyond the Balls, two popular podcasts for mums and dads navigating the ups and downs of parenting.

In this powerful conversation, Jayde opens up about her journey through motherhood and the unexpected lessons that have shaped her along the way. From her experience with postnatal depression after her third child, the challenges as a mama of three, and the deep sense of self-discovery she found along the way, Jayde’s story is a reminder of resilience and growth.

We chat about:

  • Jayde’s reflection on embracing imperfection through her motherhood journey
  • Her experience with postnatal depression and the strength she found in reaching out for support
  • Discovering her ADHD and how it transformed her approach to self-care
  • How therapy and personal growth have helped her cultivate a deep sense of self-compassion, and the positive impacts on her approach to parenting
  • The importance of how her experiences of hardship has only deepened her connection to herself and her family

19 Nov 2024When The Going Gets Tough: Being With Our Grief00:30:38

Hi Mamas.

This week I’m talking about grief. The grief that’s in me and I’m guessing may also be in you. We have the grief that comes from our personal lives/mothering, and then there is the grief that comes from knowing about the harm and loss that is occurring in the world around us – and from feeling unable to change that. It’s been a big year of loss and atrocities, and as we approach the holiday season in a post US election moment – I’m REALLY feeling it.

So I’m briefly talking about grief this week and then I’m re-sharing a being-with-grief practice that I shared in June of 2023. This practice is to support you in acknowledging, hearing and feeling the parts within you that are holding grief. It is not intended to help you “fix” your grief, because there is nothing to be fixed. We are human after all, and part of being human is grieving. It’s all about being with.

I am planning to host a free online gathering for mamas in the next few weeks with the wonderful Kelly Wright who works alongside me. The aim is to explore as a community what it might look like to be with our feelings/parts and how we might do that. If you are interested in joining us, please join my mailing list HERE so you get notified when we’ve organised a date.

I hope this episode provides just what you are needing at this time. Go gently with yourself.

10 Dec 2024Amanda Ruggeri on Loss and Lessons in Motherhood00:58:39

Hi Mamas!

This week is a double episode as I wind up the poddy for 2024 and beyond. It has been nothing less than an absolute privilege to share space with all my wonderful guests as they share some of their most intimate truths about what mothering has been like for them.

I have been creating this podcast for 2 years now and for the time being it going to be on pause while I shift focus to some other projects happening at Life After Birth Psychology. I do plan to bring the podcast back but I'm not quite sure when. So for now its goodbye.. until some time later. Thank you so much for all the support I have received in the time I've been creating the show so far.

Wishing you a wonderful Holiday season!

In this episode I chat with Amanda Ruggeri, an award-winning journalist with a focus on psychology, parenting, and child development. I love the way Amanda breaks down parenting research into relatable insights, but today she joins us to explore her personal journey into motherhood.

In this episode, Amanda opens up about how her non-traditional homeschooling background shaped her worldview, her experience navigating birth and motherhood during COVID, and the lessons she’s learned about patience, connection, and self-discovery.

We chat about:

  • Amanda’s reflections on how her upbringing influenced her parenting style
  • The challenges of building a support system while parenting far from family
  • Her journey through loss and how it shaped her perspective on pregnancy and motherhood
  • How becoming a mother deepened her empathy and understanding
  • The importance of fostering a parenting relationship rooted in connection rather than perfection

Amanda’s story is a beautiful reminder of the resilience and strength found in the everyday experiences of motherhood.

During our chat, Ruth shares her journey from her early days as a mother in the UK to raising three boys in California. We chat candidly about Ruth’s experience with the pressures of societal expectations around motherhood, and how she found her way back to herself through therapy and self-discovery.

We chat about:

  • Ruth’s experience navigating postpartum depression and the societal stigma surrounding it
  • How society’s narratives shape the way women approach and experience motherhood
  • The profound loss of selfhood Ruth felt after becoming a mother and how she rediscovered herself
  • Why parenting books and one-size-fits-all advice often fall short in the reality of motherhood
  • The challenges and joys of raising boys in a world of shifting gender norms and the inspiration behind her book Boy Mom
