01 Apr 2024{Rebroadcast} Dune (2021) with Commie Trucker01:14:37

Rebroadcast in anticipation of Dune: Part 2 coming April 4, 2024

Frank Herbert's Dune series has long been considered an impossible series to bring to film. We saw David Lynch try and fail, but in 2021, Denis Villeneuve accomplished the unthinkable. Dune Part One, the first half of the first novel, is a stunning film that really does an excellent job bringing the story to life. I'm joined again by Commie Trucker, co-host of the Left without Borders podcast, to discuss how it does the book justice, the themes embedded in the movie and why it's so beloved among the right wing.

18 Jan 2024Bonus! Exodus (1960): with Intervention Pod & Labor Jawn01:47:16

We're back with Evan of Left of the Projector for the third (maybe second?) entry in the History in Film series. This time it's 1960's Zionist epic, Exodus. Based on the novel of the same name by Leon Uris, this film aimed to convince American Jewry to consider the State of Israel (at this point, only twelve years old) as a nation deserving their investment, sympathy, and loyalty.

Somehow, we've dragged along Sam and Gabe from Labor Jawn to slog our way through this three and half hour long piece of Zionist propaganda...at least we got a shirtless Paul Newman out of it.

Blade Runner was revolutionary at the time and while effects have made leaps and bounds since then, the themes of Blade Runner persist today. What does it mean to be human? Are the new "race" of android replicants capable of empathy? What is the class structure like in this dystopia? I'm joined by Claire and Rob to answer these questions and many more.

18 Feb 2025Emilia Perez (2024) with Bring Out Your Dead podcast01:32:00

In this episode, we take a critical look at the film "Emilia Perez," an endeavor that has stirred significant debate due to its questionable narrative and representation. Joined by Griff and Chris from "Bring Out Your Dead," we dissect the film’s convoluted plot revolving around a Mexican cartel leader's journey of transition amidst the violence of the drug war. We highlight the controversies related to the film’s lack of authentic Mexican representation and the director Jacques Audiard's dismissive approach to Mexican culture. Our conversation unpacks the harmful stereotypes perpetuated by the film, particularly regarding trans women, and critiques its failed attempts at emotional resonance. We express disappointment in the film’s arbitrary musical numbers and underwhelming performances, particularly from Selena Gomez. Ultimately, we urge listeners to rethink their engagement with "Emilia Perez," advocating for cinema that embraces authentic narratives and empowers marginalized voices

26 Nov 2024To Live and Die in L.A. (1985) with Altmania podcast01:50:34

In this episode, I analyze the 1985 neo-noir action thriller "To Live and Die in L.A." with Ryan and Este from Altmania. We discuss the film's themes of crime and corruption within the socio-political context of 1980s America, highlighting performances by William Petersen and Willem Dafoe.

We explore the film’s critique of wealth disparities, unique cinematography by Robbie Müller, and Wang Chung's influential soundtrack. Key scenes and character arcs, especially Petersen's moral ambiguity, are examined. Finally, we reflect on the film's alternate ending and its impact, celebrating its cult classic status and inviting listeners to join us in further cinematic discussions.

12 Sep 2023Men in Black with Andre Swai and CJ (@LoveBroccoli)00:57:11

The Men in Black: a secret agency of the the Immigration and Naturalization Services (I.N.S.) that is in charge of illegal and legal "aliens" from other galaxies. Their existance is hidden through a flashy red light that allows the agency to mold the story to fit their narrative. Add this all together and you political film showing the dangers of illegal immigrants and how the US uses propaganda surrounding it to fit their narrative.

11 Apr 2025TV BONUS: Severance: Season 2, Episodes 9-1001:08:41

In this episode of Left of the Projector, I’m joined by Smirk and Red to discuss the final two episodes of Season 2 of Severance. We analyze the emotional depth and intricate narrative of the finale, focusing on the character arcs of Mark, Gemma, and the Egan family within Lumen's oppressive corporate culture.

We explore themes of control, moral ambiguity, and the duality of their 'Innie' and 'Outie' selves, while reflecting on the show's dark humor and symbolism. As we wrap up, we speculate on the unresolved themes of exploitation and identity, anticipating how they may evolve in future seasons. Ultimately, Severance challenges us to confront societal compartmentalization and the quest for wholeness.

07 Mar 2023The Death of Stalin w/ a bunch of comrades01:03:24

Hollywood rarely makes films about the Soviet Union, at least from their perspective (even if it's a bit ahistorical). The Death of Stalin came out 100 years to the month of the Russian Revolution, which was no accident. Despite the flaws of this film, which we discuss in full, it's a really fun "fan fiction" (as per Jolly Leftist). I had fun watching and hearing those more knowledgable about the period that I am discuss all the facts. I am joined by podcast regular The Jolly Leftist as well as Comrade Larry, Comrade Muerte and Companero Cruz.

29 Aug 2023The Running Man with Dang We Stole This Podcast01:19:38

This week on LotP I bring you The Running Man with Arnold Schwarzenegger (he's in the movie, not a guest). A perhaps somewhat forgotten film from the 1980's that depicts a dystopian future where people are forced to compete on a TV Game show while being hunted by stalkers. The movie is loosely based on a novel by Richard Bachman (Stephen King) and takes some liberties to make it into an Arnold classic. 13 Jun 2023The Hunger Games Trilogy w/ Hungry Rye and Rob01:41:29

The Hunger Games trilogy made over a billion dollars and is often seen as a work of revolution in a dystopian future. What if the movie wasn't so revolutionary afterall? What if they entire thing was a counter revolution or a bourgeoisie revolution? I dive in with friends of the show Hungry Rye and Donttagrob. The episode includes book differences and discussion of all 4 films.

31 Oct 2024Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) with Podcasty For Me01:34:20

In this episode, we explore the cult classic Halloween 3: Season of the Witch with guests Jake and Ian from Podcasty for Me. We delve into the film’s unique narrative, which abandons the Michael Myers storyline in favor of a standalone horror tale. Despite its initial box office struggles, we argue for its imaginative depth, touching on themes of capitalism, technology, and corporate greed embodied by the character Conal Cochran.

Jake shares his personal connection to the film, and we analyze how its eerie elements, such as the haunting jingle for the Silver Shamrock masks, reflect broader societal issues. Our discussion dives into the film's practical effects, dark humor, and standout performances, particularly from Tom Atkins and Stacey Nelkin.

As we wrap up, we investigate the film's ambiguous ending and its lingering impact on viewers, encouraging audiences to embrace Halloween 3 for its creativity and unique place within the horror genre.

04 Feb 2025The Exorcist (1973)01:13:37

In this episode, I join Hugo and Priscilla Luna to explore the iconic 1973 horror film The Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin. We dissect its classification as horror, delve into its psychological themes, and reflect on how early exposure to the film shapes perceptions of the genre.

We examine the historical context of post-Vietnam America, discussing societal fears surrounding science and religion. The conversation highlights Friedkin's innovative filmmaking techniques and key scenes, particularly Reagan’s possession. We also analyze character arcs, focusing on Father Karras’s internal struggles. We wrap up by recommending both versions of the film to appreciate its layered narrative and significance in cinema.

28 Feb 2023Groundhog Day w/ Smirk Gently and Randy00:55:23

It's Groundhog Day...again. Actually, just the first time we have covered this time loop movie on the show. Groundhog Day is filled with jokes and Bill Murray being a total jerk. Probably for 100 or more years before he finally becomes class-conscious. We will mostly talk about how he gets to this point, how capitalist mode of production fits into the movie and lots of jokes.

In this episode, I explore the iconic 1975 film Dog Day Afternoon with guest Jake Flores, delving into its themes of class struggle and socio-economic issues of the 1970s. We analyze Sonny's character, who conducts a bank heist to fund his partner Leon's gender-affirming surgery, and discuss the film's impact on LGBTQ+ representation.

Our conversation examines the media portrayal in the film, particularly the "Attica" scene's relevance to contemporary justice movements. By unpacking the film's climax, we highlight its stark reality within a decaying socio-economic landscape, emphasizing its enduring significance in discussions around identity, resistance, and the intersection of art and politics.

06 Dec 2022The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers w/ Hungry Rye00:56:48

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers came out when the United States was debating and then invading Iraq over supposed WMDs and it was this climate that influenced some of the aspects of this film. In addition, Vigo Mortensen was very much opposed to the US illegal invasion of Iraq and we love him for it. Hungry Rye is back to bring into focus the geopolitical aspects happening when this film came out and how important this film really is to the trilogy. Many find this movie slow or unapproachable given that much of the "action" happens near the end at Helms Deep. I hope that after listening to this episode, we will convince you that is far more than that.

03 Oct 2024Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2 (2003, 2004)01:12:19

In this episode, I chat with Libby about Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" Volume 1 and Volume 2, examining the film's themes and narrative choices. We discuss the decision to split the film due to its lengthy runtime and how it impacts audience engagement. Libby shares her affinity for the film and highlights the empowering portrayal of female characters like "the Bride," O-Ren Ishii, and Vernita Green.

We delve into pivotal scenes and Tarantino's unique cinematic techniques, as well as the emotional and philosophical aspects of revenge. Libby proposes an intriguing theory about the polyamorous dynamics among characters, prompting a discussion on love and power. We wrap up by reflecting on Tarantino’s controversial reputation and the importance of critically engaging with his work, exploring the rich storytelling and representation within "Kill Bill."

14 Mar 2023Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story: w/ a bunch of comrades01:12:22

We have seen Hollywood release a bunch of left adjacent films in recent years and Glass Onion is one of them. We should however not confuse these movies with any type of left movement in Hollywood - this is what sells. That said, this movie does have some very interesting themes if you peel back the layers of the onion (pun intended). We find some interesting metaphors, critiques of different groups of people from a liberal leaning perspective and more.

31 Jan 2023Starship Troopers (1997)01:04:11

Starship Troopers is one of, if not the greatest, the best spoof military films of all time. Paul Verhoeven is the GOAT when it comes to satire, especially military and police related. The mastermind behind Robocop brought the novel to life in a much better way. Verhoeven used the imagery of fascism, the third reich, the United States to show what ongoing militarism looks like if we keep going in that direction.

My cast of guests are here to bring light to all the fash you see depicted in this movie and of course, make it funny.

21 Feb 2023District 9 w/ a bunch of comrades01:10:44

District 9 is as pertinent as it was when it came out almost 15 years ago. There is a lot to discuss in this episode and we easily could have added another hour on more topics (possible bonus ep coming soon for supporters). One thing we did not address as it wasn't known prior was the director's (Neill Blomkamp) politics.  Specifically in an interview which he states that the reason for lack of resources worldwide is over population and thus not enough to go around. This is straight eugenic thinking and the reality is we have people hoarding the wealth and resources worldwide. In this episode of Left of the Projector, host Evan delves into 'The Substance,' a new body horror film directed by Coralie Fargette and starring Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid, and Margaret Qualley. He offers a mostly spoiler-free analysis, discussing not only the stark and gory visuals but also the deeper commentary on body image and the challenges women face in Hollywood. Evan highlights the film's extreme and visceral approach to horror, comparing it to other notable works like 'Dead Alive' and 'The Fly,' while praising its unrelenting critique of societal standards imposed on women. Listeners are encouraged to watch the film in theaters and stay tuned for a detailed, spoiler-filled discussion in a future episode.

16 Aug 2023The Hobbit Trilogy with a bunch of Tolkeinists01:48:03

Order is back to the shire. For those that had issue with the ep at 1:09:55, it's fixed!

If there ever was any doubt that capitalism has major impacts on movies, this is the ultimate evidence. A wonderful kids book, 250 pagse in length was turned into a trilogy of movies over 8 hours long. There are pointless battles, characters, love triangles and other revisionism.

I'm joined by my LOTR companion, Hungry Rye (who you may remember from the LOTR Trilogy of episodes), Mike (turn leftist podcast) and Nick (Intervention podcast) to discuss.

Back to the horror genre once again (and next week too -- for my non-Horror fans, I got some fun episodes planned) with last years hit film The Barbarian. While this is a horror film, it definitely pushes the boundaries of a horror film. There are so many pertinent themes that are worth discussing. From Reaganomics to the me too movement, this film has much to talk about with my guests The Jolly Leftist and Comrade Cutiepie.

25 Oct 2022Interview with the Vampire w/ SmirkGently00:57:01

The 1990's were filled with vampire classics, one of which may be Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles. For perhaps the first time on this show, I rewatched a movie and it didn't bring back that 90's nostalgia that I so dearly love. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt both perform well, but it's hard to fully love it knowing the type of people they are today. But I digress...

Vampire lore has a long history, much of which stems from the classic novel 'Dracula.' However, the mythos goes back much further. There are many alagories and ways to interpret the vampire, but perhaps the most useful version is that of the blood-sucking capitalist.  The mere idea of a person, who drains you of your blood until you are dead sounds remarkably similar to that of a Capitalist in our current system. An individual or corporation sucks the life out of its workers so that it remains moving, living, and immortal. Enjoy Smirk Gently's return to the show to discuss the film. DO you think it holds up?

15 Nov 2022No Country for Old Men w/Commie Trucker00:55:53

No Country for Old Men was a departure from the Coen bros typical film, but not entirely. It still employed many of the same vehicles but it was built on Cormac McCarthy's neo-Western novel from 2005. The film went on to win Best Picture and the performances are spectacular.

The themes of longing for a bygone era, difficulty adjusting and see what lies ahead are among some of the themes I discuss with my guest Commie Trucker.

13 Aug 2024The Host with Jon Greenaway (Horror Vanguard)00:56:02

This week, my guest Jon Greenaway (The Horror Vanguard) and I delve into the intricate layers of Bong Joon-ho's film "The Host," appreciating its masterful storytelling and character analysis of Gang-du. We explore the film's blend of comedy and seriousness, praising its tonal shifts and expert composition for a captivating cinematic experience. Drawing from filmmakers like Scorsese and Carpenter, we admire how Bong Joon-ho combines action, tone shifts, and social commentary. The discussion touches on the film's themes of political protest, societal disillusionment, and the central importance of family in Bong Joon-ho's work. We reflect on the symbolic significance of shared meals and familial unity, challenging conventional storytelling methods and highlighting the power of metaphor in critiquing societal norms. Reflecting on anti-capitalist themes and individual agency within systemic structures, we contemplate the potential for change through acts of resistance and solidarity in a complex world.

Ok, so the new Knives Out story just came out, but we are rehashing the OG first. Rian Johnson should stick to films like this and leave Star Wars for JJ Abrams. Johnson made a fantastic murder mystery film stuffed with class, race and money themes. The characters in this film are worthy of analysis, and hope to get an episode on the new film Glass Onion soon.
