01 Apr 2024 | {Rebroadcast} Dune (2021) with Commie Trucker | 01:14:37
Rebroadcast in anticipation of Dune: Part 2 coming April 4, 2024 Frank Herbert's Dune series has long been considered an impossible series to bring to film. We saw David Lynch try and fail, but in 2021, Denis Villeneuve accomplished the unthinkable. Dune Part One, the first half of the first novel, is a stunning film that really does an excellent job bringing the story to life. I'm joined again by Commie Trucker, co-host of the Left without Borders podcast, to discuss how it does the book justice, the themes embedded in the movie and why it's so beloved among the right wing. 18 Jan 2024 | Bonus! Exodus (1960): with Intervention Pod & Labor Jawn | 01:47:16
We're back with Evan of Left of the Projector for the third (maybe second?) entry in the History in Film series. This time it's 1960's Zionist epic, Exodus. Based on the novel of the same name by Leon Uris, this film aimed to convince American Jewry to consider the State of Israel (at this point, only twelve years old) as a nation deserving their investment, sympathy, and loyalty. Somehow, we've dragged along Sam and Gabe from Labor Jawn to slog our way through this three and half hour long piece of Zionist propaganda...at least we got a shirtless Paul Newman out of it. Primary Sources: In Vigilant Brotherhood by The American Jewish Committee - (see pg 64-70 for "The Blaustein-Ben-Gurion Agreement") "Is Zionism a Liberating Democratic Movement?" by Henryk Erlich "This is a struggle between the children of light and the children of darkness, between humanity and the law of the jungle" Tweet by Benjamin Netanyahu "שטיל, די נאַכט איז אױסגעשטערנט [Quiet, the Night is Full of Stars]" performed by Isabel Frey Resources: Middle East Children's Alliance The Palestine Children's Relief Fund Patreon: @laborjawn Instagram: @laborjawn Tiktok: @laborjawn Patreon: @LeftoftheProjectorPod Twitter: @LOTP_Pod Instagram: @leftoftheprojectorpod Letterboxd: @lotppod Merch: https://leftoftheprojectorpod.threadless.com Twitter: @intervenepod Instagram: @intervention_pod Email: interventionpod@gmail.com Levi Levi: Twitter: @levi0levi Instagram: @levi0levi0levi Email: levi0levi@duck.com Big thanks to Plasmid for the music for the show: Instagram - @plasmidband. In this episode, we take a critical look at the film "Emilia Perez," an endeavor that has stirred significant debate due to its questionable narrative and representation. Joined by Griff and Chris from "Bring Out Your Dead," we dissect the film’s convoluted plot revolving around a Mexican cartel leader's journey of transition amidst the violence of the drug war. We highlight the controversies related to the film’s lack of authentic Mexican representation and the director Jacques Audiard's dismissive approach to Mexican culture. Our conversation unpacks the harmful stereotypes perpetuated by the film, particularly regarding trans women, and critiques its failed attempts at emotional resonance. We express disappointment in the film’s arbitrary musical numbers and underwhelming performances, particularly from Selena Gomez. In this episode of Left of the Projector, I’m joined by Smirk and Red to discuss the final two episodes of Season 2 of Severance. We explore themes of control, moral ambiguity, and the duality of their 'Innie' and 'Outie' selves, while reflecting on the show's dark humor and symbolism. As we wrap up, we speculate on the unresolved themes of exploitation and identity, anticipating how they may evolve in future seasons. Our discussion dives into the film's practical effects, dark humor, and standout performances, particularly from Tom Atkins and Stacey Nelkin. 15 Apr 2025 | Dog Day Afternoon (1975) with Jake Flores (Pod Damn America) | 01:13:53
In this episode, I explore the iconic 1975 film Dog Day Afternoon with guest Jake Flores, delving into its themes of class struggle and socio-economic issues of the 1970s. We analyze Sonny's character, who conducts a bank heist to fund his partner Leon's gender-affirming surgery, and discuss the film's impact on LGBTQ+ representation. Our conversation examines the media portrayal in the film, particularly the "Attica" scene's relevance to contemporary justice movements. By unpacking the film's climax, we highlight its stark reality within a decaying socio-economic landscape, emphasizing its enduring significance in discussions around identity, resistance, and the intersection of art and politics. 06 Dec 2022 | The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers w/ Hungry Rye | 00:56:48
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers came out when the United States was debating and then invading Iraq over supposed WMDs and it was this climate that influenced some of the aspects of this film. In addition, Vigo Mortensen was very much opposed to the US illegal invasion of Iraq and we love him for it. Hungry Rye is back to bring into focus the geopolitical aspects happening when this film came out and how important this film really is to the trilogy. Many find this movie slow or unapproachable given that much of the "action" happens near the end at Helms Deep. I hope that after listening to this episode, we will convince you that is far more than that. 03 Oct 2024 | Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2 (2003, 2004) | 01:12:19
In this episode, I chat with Libby about Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" Volume 1 and Volume 2, examining the film's themes and narrative choices. We discuss the decision to split the film due to its lengthy runtime and how it impacts audience engagement. Libby shares her affinity for the film and highlights the empowering portrayal of female characters like "the Bride," O-Ren Ishii, and Vernita Green. We delve into pivotal scenes and Tarantino's unique cinematic techniques, as well as the emotional and philosophical aspects of revenge. Libby proposes an intriguing theory about the polyamorous dynamics among characters, prompting a discussion on love and power. We wrap up by reflecting on Tarantino’s controversial reputation and the importance of critically engaging with his work, exploring the rich storytelling and representation within "Kill Bill." 14 Mar 2023 | Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story: w/ a bunch of comrades | 01:12:22
We have seen Hollywood release a bunch of left adjacent films in recent years and Glass Onion is one of them. We should however not confuse these movies with any type of left movement in Hollywood - this is what sells. That said, this movie does have some very interesting themes if you peel back the layers of the onion (pun intended). We find some interesting metaphors, critiques of different groups of people from a liberal leaning perspective and more. I am joined by Smirk Gently and sorenrehkopf.

Starship Troopers is one of, if not the greatest, the best spoof military films of all time. Paul Verhoeven is the GOAT when it comes to satire, especially military and police related. The mastermind behind Robocop brought the novel to life in a much better way. Verhoeven used the imagery of fascism, the third reich, the United States to show what ongoing militarism looks like if we keep going in that direction. For perhaps the first time on this show, I rewatched a movie and it didn't bring back that 90's nostalgia that I so dearly love. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt both perform well, but it's hard to fully love it knowing the type of people they are today. But I digress... Vampire lore has a long history, much of which stems from the classic novel 'Dracula.' However, the mythos goes back much further. There are many alagories and ways to interpret the vampire, but perhaps the most useful version is that of the blood-sucking capitalist. The mere idea of a person, who drains you of your blood until you are dead sounds remarkably similar to that of a Capitalist in our current system. An individual or corporation sucks the life out of its workers so that it remains moving, living, and immortal. Enjoy Smirk Gently's return to the show to discuss the film. DO you think it holds up?

It's July 4th, so this week we bring you a movie the CIA fighting the IRA (or a faction of it). This 90's Tom Clancy classic is one of those movies that was a product of its time. Clancy's character Jack Ryan has spawned countless movies and a TV Show. If you're anything like me...you were rooting for the IRA and against the CIA. 04 Apr 2023 | Idiocracy w/ Cole and Libby | 00:58:35
Idiocracy is about eugenics. To the Mike Judge apologists, just get over it. No matter how you slice it, that's the undertone of this film and his comments about the movie don't make it any better. Prepare for the highest level analysis you'll ever find on the internet for this movie. Libby is back with d*ck jokes, I mean why not, just consider the movie we're discussing. And Cole is back with more Society of the Spectacle.

30 May 2023 | Saved! w/ James Doonquah and Smirk Gently | 01:10:40
Saved! is one of those early 2000's films that kind of flew under the radar. The movie stars Jena Malone, Mandy Moore & Macaulay Culkin as a parody of what it's like to be in a Christian community and high school. The premise being Malone become pregnant and all of the drama that ensues. I am joined by friend of the show Smirk Gently as well as James Doonquah (Legion of Doom on socials). 15 Nov 2022 | No Country for Old Men w/Commie Trucker | 00:55:53
No Country for Old Men was a departure from the Coen bros typical film, but not entirely. It still employed many of the same vehicles but it was built on Cormac McCarthy's neo-Western novel from 2005. The film went on to win Best Picture and the performances are spectacular. The themes of longing for a bygone era, difficulty adjusting and see what lies ahead are among some of the themes I discuss with my guest Commie Trucker. Left of the Projector Links

28 Mar 2023 | Newsies w/ Chris Wade (Chapo Trap House, Hell on Earth) | 01:01:54
Movies about organized labor are few are far between. But Disney's Newsies is that rare exception that is still a class today. One of the few others, Norma Rae, which was released 20 years earlier, also depicts the struggles of organized labor in a more modern sense. This twin bill of films are what I watched along with my guest, Chris Wade, Producer of Chapo Trap House and Hell on Earth as well as And Introducing and Infinite Cast on the book Infinite Jest.

This week I'm joined by Thomas (Leftist Squidward on TikTok) to discuss a film with a historical perspective: Oliver Stone's Salvador. The film went mostly unnoticed at the time and even since has little resurgence. There is however, a lot to going on in the 1979-1980 period in El Salvador and we delve into the film as well as the history.

03 Jan 2023 | Knives Out w/ A Group of Comrades | 01:07:41
Ok, so the new Knives Out story just came out, but we are rehashing the OG first. Rian Johnson should stick to films like this and leave Star Wars for JJ Abrams. Johnson made a fantastic murder mystery film stuffed with class, race and money themes. The characters in this film are worthy of analysis, and hope to get an episode on the new film Glass Onion soon.
