01 May 20203- Why to begin piano before another instrument00:18:32

If you’ve wondered what instrument to start your child on, then this episode will explain why starting on the piano is a great decision.  Your child may have said they want to learn drums, guitar, or anything else and if so, then do that!  But, I still have my reasons for having kids learn piano first, especially if they’re unsure what instrument to learn.

Here are a few of my reasons I discuss further in this episode:

  • It makes sounds right away
  • It encompasses high and low sounds
  • They'll be glad they learned it later on
  • Kids can get instant gratification
  • They're learning both clefs
  • Music theory is being learned so much

04 Sep 202021- What's a steady beat and why to start here00:16:07

Have you heard the words "steady beat" being said a lot, but you're just not quite sure what it means?  In this episode, I'm explaining exactly what a steady beat is and why it's important to start here when it comes to teaching kids music... yes even at home.

The steady beat:

  • Is the pulse and is constant
  • Keeps the music moving along
  • Helps instruments in the orchestra or band stay together
  • Can be felt in many different ways
  • Has strong and weak beats
  • Is the foundational building block

Are you trying to decide if your child should learn piano and you just don’t know whether to move forward or not?  Well, there are two ways families get to the point of deciding whether or not your child should learn piano.  It’s either your decision or your child’s.  Yep, that’s it!

Don’t focus so much on how the decision gets made, but on if it’s the right one. In this episode, I’ll explain how to not only make a decision, but how to move forward with your child once that decision is made too.

08 Jan 202134- Yes, your child can learn piano at home00:21:06

This episode is coming out after the new year, but I did that on purpose.  As you’re making your new year resolutions, maybe one of those is to have your child learn piano, but you just don’t know how to get started.  You’ve listened to a few episodes of this podcast where I talked about identifying if your child is ready and maybe they’ve been asking you to take lessons but you just haven’t signed them up for whatever reason.  Nothing will ever replace the value of in person piano lessons, but the online option is definitely a great option as well.   In this episode, I explain the benefits of having your child learn piano from your home and how it fits right into your family calendar.

29 May 20207- How to help your child practice in a noisy home00:15:28

You've made the decision for your child to learn piano, but now helping them practice is the next step.  As you know, family life isn't quiet.  It's almost near impossible to find a quiet time for your child to practice.  But, there are ways you can help your child and get your family on board as well when it comes to practice time in your home.

Here are the suggestions I give in this episode today:

  • Try to find a quiet part of the house if possible
  • Develop a weekly practice schedule and try to stick to it
  • Have discussions with the other members of your family about expectations when it's time to practice
  • Have your child wear headphones if they're practicing on a digital piano or keyboard
  • Give yourself grace if a day of practice is missed because of "life"

19 Jun 202010- The special needs child and piano lessons00:26:24

Can a child with special needs learn piano?  Of course they can!  Every child has music inside of them, and it's up to the music teacher to help them find it.

I’ve worked with kiddos of all different disabilities and needs in music and there definitely is not a one size fits all approach.  With special needs kids, a lot of teachers need to realize that the traditional style of learning or the method books won’t work. Why?  Because special needs kids need a lot more patience and personalized approach based on what they need.

In this episode, we'll explore some of the different needs your child might have and ways they can still learn piano in their own timing and way.

11 Sep 202022- What is rhythm in music and how to explore it00:16:16

What is rhythm?  Well, it's basically the way you put sounds and silences in music together!

Rhythm is what makes you walk by a drum playing and has you tapping your foot, nodding your head, snapping your finger, or moving your shoulders a bit.

While beat is the foundation for all music, the rhythm is layered right on top of it to connect the notes and rests together to make music become, well music!

Listen in to the episode to find out more about rhythm and how you can explore it!

19 Mar 202138- My favorite online musical learning games 00:11:50

When a child is learning music from home, we can’t forget about online learning games!  Let’s be honest, the kids of today are the digital generation.  Of course it depends on the parent, but kids are way are way more savvy at technology than my generation was.  With that said, you don’t want your kiddos staring at a screen all the time and play, using imaginations, and creating music without tech are equally as important. I think there’s a balance between using technology (like my Learn Piano At Home course) and in person music creation and exploration.

There are so many amazing musical games and websites and your family may already have a favorite site you like to go to.  If you do a quick Google search with “kids music games” you’ll see so much come up.  In this episode, we’ll focus on musical games and I want to share just a few of my favorite ones.

02 Oct 202025- What to do if your child says music lessons are boring00:16:52

In this episode, I talk about what to do if your child says music lessons are boring.  A lot of times, it's getting to the bottom of why kids are saying this.  Most of the time, there is an underlying reason they're saying this phrase.

After listening to the episode, you'll get questions to ask your child about why they're thinking music lessons are boring and will get strategies in how to help them to keep going.

24 Apr 20202- What's missing in piano lessons (in my opinion)00:12:07

In this episode, we're going to talk about what’s missing in piano lessons.  In my opinion, that's the interaction with the parents.  Parents should feel just as included in what’s being learned as your child does.  You should know how to help them practice and should leave lessons feeling confident each week in your ability to do so.

Here are 3 ways to help you communicate better with your child's piano teacher:

1. Ask the teacher if they’re not providing information to communicate with you, even if it’s just on a sticky note of what your child needs to be practicing that week.

2. Take notes if you’re in an open lesson environment.  Write things down like warmup- C scale, learn new song on page 54, music theory is treble clef lines and spaces, practice for 30 minutes, remember posture.

3. If all else fails, as the week goes on and you’ve forgotten something, ask the teacher.  Don’t be afraid to shoot a quick email their way to ask them about something your child needs to be doing.

26 Jun 202011- Non musical parents and piano lessons00:13:28

In this episode, I'll discuss ways that you can help your child learn piano even if you're not very musical yourself.  A little encouragement really goes a long way with your kids.  More than anything else, they want support and need you to help keep them motivated.

Creating a supportive environment for your child to learn, staying present and interested, pushing them the right amount, and staying in alignment with what the teacher expects of your child all matter so much.
