08 Dec 2023 | When Family Matters | 00:17:38
In this podcast episode, Sarah is joined by Kelly Venkiah, the Founder and Lead Consultant at Venkiah HR, who participated in Sarah's Bootcamp in May 2023. Kelly's professional background includes 18 years in the corporate realm at Amazon, where she held various roles in both general and specialised capacities, eventually leading to international assignments. In 2020, she embarked on the journey of starting a family, welcoming her first son, followed by a second in 2022. During her maternity leave, Kelly made the pivotal decision to transition into HR consulting, a career move that had been on her radar and now felt opportune given her evolving family dynamics. For Kelly, the appeal of HR consulting, like many working parents, lies in the flexibility it offers. Managing the health challenges of her youngest son, Miles, who requires extended hospital stays, Kelly finds solace in the ability to work from any location as needed. Initiating one's consultancy presents inherent challenges; self-belief is crucial, and imposter syndrome may emerge. Kelly highlights the importance of creating a sound business strategy and avoiding overcommitting to ensure success. The Bootcamp experience has been a lifeline for Kelly, providing a supportive community from both fellow participants and the Leap into team. Kelly's advice to podcast listeners contemplating a career shift into HR consulting is straightforward – envision the life you desire. Consider your aspirations not only in the present and financially but also project where you want to be in 5-10 years and then reverse engineer your path to get there. 24 Nov 2023 | Mind Your Business: Navigating Mental Health as an Entrepreneur | 00:43:19
Let's delve into the realm of mental health today! In our discussion, we'll explore the prevalent challenges surrounding mental well-being, offering practical strategies for navigating and fostering mental health, particularly within a professional context. Recognising mental health as a cornerstone of overall well-being is paramount, especially for business owners. Its impact extends to decision-making, creativity, and relationships with both employees and clients. The rigors of work challenges, stress, and long hours can adversely affect mental health, both professionally and personally. Creating a supportive environment is crucial. As a business owner, empathy plays a vital role, given that clients and collaborators may also require support. Joining Sarah today are Natalie Ellis, the award-winning founder of Rebox HR, and Matt Young, from Who Needs Instructions, also known as 'The Journalling Guy'. Natalie Ellis, who established Rebox HR in 2020, shares her journey of success and the importance of shedding the metaphorical mask that business owners often wear. While accolades were attributed to the business, recognising and celebrating personal achievements is equally vital. Having started her business after experiencing burnout in her corporate role, Natalie emphasises the significance of acknowledging signs of mental health challenges and seeking help. Her book, 'Launch Your HR Career,' is available on her website, with a second book due for release next February. Our second guest, Matt Young, of Who Needs Instructions, a not for profit business, and The Journalling Guy focuses on men's mental health, and shares the alarming statistic that 75% of suicide rates are men over 50, often due to suppressed feelings. Matt's initiatives include free events, walks, night hikes, breakfast meetups, and a supportive WhatsApp community, creating a safe space for men to openly discuss their thoughts and feelings. 'The Journalling Guy' is an online course, promoting the transformative power of journaling, both online and in-person in Devon. Matt now runs The Journalling Guy online course, and locally in person in Devon. 10 Nov 2023 | Corfu Retreat - Strategies and Sunsets | 00:19:13
In this episode, Sarah Hamilton-Gill is joined by Nikki Masterman, MD and Founder of Inspired HR Ltd in the UK, and Tracey Corea, Founder and Principal Consultant of Robertson HR in the USA, who both attended our Corfu Retreat in September 2023. Their initial expectations of the retreat were somewhat different from the profound experiences they ultimately encountered. Nikki embarked on her consultancy journey eight years ago, experiencing rapid growth, bringing with it long hours, along with the challenges brought about by working in HR throughout the pandemic. This journey left her on the brink of burnout. In contrast, Tracey is at the beginning of her entrepreneurial voyage, with her business just one year old, eagerly seeking opportunities to learn and collaborate. Nikki arrived at the retreat armed with an extensive to-do list and lofty aspirations. Did she accomplish everything on her list? No, but what she gained was immeasurable. In this episode, Nikki reveals that she's typically a very private person who avoids vulnerability. However, the nurturing and supportive environment of the retreat allowed her to let down her guard. Both Tracey and Nikki share common words when discussing their retreat experiences: rejuvenation, refocusing, relaxation, motivation, reenergizing, creativity, and reflection. These words encapsulate the essence of what we all sometimes require – a pause to contemplate, reassess our goals, and subsequently regain focus on our path forward. If you are listening to this and thinking about taking the leap into HR consulting, but not sure if it’s for you, we have a great way for you to find out, and it will only cost you £25 (plus vat). 22 Sep 2023 | Launching your consultancy as a partnership? | 00:29:48
Today our guest is Ryan Chandra, HR Consultant and Co-Founder, PeopleWise Solutions, based in Canada. Ryan shares with us why he chose to leave the corporate world, and the difference it has made. Being an active dad, and involved parent, he wanted to be more present for things like the school pick up and drop offs, and attend other school functions. He also talks about being a millennial, and that he hasn’t been in any one role for more than 5 years. He wanted to take on the work that he really enjoyed doing, and likes the variety that it in turn brings. Having decided to leave the corporate world, Ryan decided to go into a partnership with Ram, who he had known for over 12 years. With a differing skill set, Ram brings the strategic and leadership development side to the business, whereas Ryan is more transactional. He believes that this in turn means they can bring to the table a wide range of services to their clients. Ethics and values for business owners is paramount, and growing, learning and acknowledging is essential. This is something that sits at the core of PeopleWise Solutions, and as their brand is based on them and their personality, values is everything. 14 Jul 2023 | Helping your clients solve the challenges of hybrid working | 00:23:36
Recently Sarah and Kim visited London and attended the CIPD Festival of Work at Olympia in London. In this podcast Sarah reflects on some of the key topics discussed, being the value of networking, collaborations and hybrid working. We may recognise that networking has many benefits, whether that’s online or face to face and is an essential element for consultants as well as inhouse professionals. Whilst snatching a quick break from the busy stand, she met Graham, who was enjoying a much-needed coffee and downtime. Sarah soon discovered that Graham Joyce was the co-founder of a great cloud-based product called DuoMe. So, our lunchbreaks soon became an interesting discussion about our businesses. DuoMe, was in the first stage of development in March 2020, when the pandemic hit. 24 Mar 2023 | How one HR consultant is literally changing lives | 00:26:29
In this episode Sarah is joined by Jennifer Opare-Ayree. Jennifer went through her virtual HR consulting bootcamp in March 2022. Everything that has happened to Jennifer, has brought her to where she is now, with her own consulting business, and her charity the Mary Sowah Foundation, set up in honour of her grandma, who passed away in late 2017. Jennifer, brought up by her grandma, came to the UK at aged 15, to be with her father and siblings. Her grandma sold everything she owned, to give her an education. She shares how when her grandma was growing up, it was a time when many didn’t’ believe that girls should be educated, but she used to sneak into the back of a school classroom to learn, until the teacher discovered her. This inspiring story demonstrates how a strong why can drive you to achieve great things and how this manifests into your business. 10 Mar 2023 | Automation is the key to scaling your business - here's how | 00:23:09
In this episode with Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD it’s all about automation for consulting startups and scale ups. By automating as much as you can within your consultancy, right from the very start, you can free up time to enable you to be as effective as possible. 16 Dec 2022 | Onwards and Upwards to 2023 | 00:08:21
2022 has literally flown by, and as we approach 2023, Sarah Hamilton-Gill reflects on the year gone by and looking forward. Being a business owner is like a rollercoaster. Things go well, but sometimes things don’t go as you had planned, or wanted them to go. Sarah refers back to 2014, when actress Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband musician Chris Martin announced they were separating. The phrase which was used a lot at that time, and now is ‘conscious uncoupling’. Relationships, whether they are personal or business related can break down. This could be due to communication issues, a breach or trust, or other reasons. At this time of year, it’s important to self-reflect. Are there clients where the relationship is difficult? Is it time for retainer contracts to be renewed? Whatever the hardships though, spend time looking at the successes too, not just things that went wrong. What are your key learnings from 2023? Why not share them as a LinkedIn post? Sarah shares her pointers on the above with you in this podcast. -- Links: Mastermind programme: https://leap-into-consulting.mykajabi.com/mastermindacceleratorCoaching: https://www.leapintoconsulting.com/1-x-1-coaching Book a chat with Sarah: Book nowConnect with Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/SarahHGLI Follow us on Eventbrite to know ‘hot off the press’ about our virtual conferences and other events: https://bit.ly/LeapIntoEvents Buy Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD’s No. 1 Amazon Best Selling Business book as a paperback, audible or eBook: https://amzn.to/3HX8SjS Join our Facebook Business Growth group: https://bit.ly/FBHRGrowListen to our other podcasts: https://bit.ly/3B8VC96 Visit our website: https://bit.ly/WebLeapInto
02 Dec 2022 | Scaling up your business - even in a recession | 00:21:26
In this podcast episode, Sarah Hamilton-Gill talks about keys to scaling up your business. Even in the midst of financial difficulties globally, there are still opportunities. When coaching Sarah often hears about consultants’ desires to scale up and grow their business. Again a key question is ‘why do you want to do this?’ Often, it’s because they want to sell their business in the future. Do you have a 5 or 10 year or long-term plan? Pay attention to the detail and be clear! Sarah discusses further how her business helps scale ups by her Mastermind group programme and 1:1 coaching. How can you scale up? Sarah gives you some key pointers on this. How adaptable and flexible is your business? Do you have automations? Sarah Hamilton-Gill is joined by Nicola Marshman of NMBR Consulting Ltd. Nicola specialises in the other side of finance, rather than the day to day, looking at strategic finance, helping business owners view what their business will look like in the future, so they know how to look forward and plan in terms of cash and so much more. Before the covid lockdown, Nicola was working in Singapore with large corporates, but wanted to work with smaller companies. She wanted to move back to the UK and set up her own business. This was challenging as this was through covid, but she finds it extremely rewarding working with small businesses, seeing the impact she can make to them. Nicola is also part of the CFO centre, offering support to early-stage larger businesses. Is there funding out there for start-ups? Yes, there is. Nicola discusses this further with Sarah, and also gives some great top tips. Nicola will be joining Sarah on a future webinar to discuss the above, and much more further. -- Links: Mastermind programme: https://leap-into-consulting.mykajabi.com/mastermindaccelerator Coaching: https://www.leapintoconsulting.com/1-x-1-coaching Capsule CRM: https://capsulecrm.com/ Book a chat with Sarah: Book now Connect with Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/SarahHGLI Connect with Nicola on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicola-marshman/ Webinar with Nicola ‘coming soon’. 18 Nov 2022 | Addressing the pain points of your clients and prospective clients | 00:17:10
In this episode Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD talks more about how to address your client’s pain points, and those of your ideal clients. If you have Sarah’s No. 1 selling Amazon business book ‘Leap into HR consulting: How to move successfully from corporate to consulting’, and flip to page 153 there’s a great section about client pain points, together with a set of questions which will help you to look at these in greater detail. If not, there are more details in the notes. Sarah is joined by Emma-Jo of the Induction App, who she has partnered with for the UK launch of the app. The app, which is HR specialist software for onboarding and induction, is a great addition to any HR consultant’s portfolio, as it adds value to your clients. Did you know for example that 26% of businesses feel prepared for new starters and inductions, as opposed to 88% of new employees stating they didn’t have a positive experience with their induction. Using great digital tech, and giving your new people a good experience from the start, really does make a huge difference, not just for retention of staff, but also regarding employee satisfaction. It can also play an essential role if compliance is high on your client’s priorities too. 04 Nov 2022 | Creating a money mindset to maximise your business revenue | 00:21:45
In this podcast we talk about mindset, and in particular mindset around money. If you have Sarah Hamilton-Gill’s book “Leap into HR Consulting: How to move successfully from corporate to HR consulting” there is more information on page 161/162, which goes into greater detail about beliefs about money. Today we are joined by Roneish Myers of MoneyHeave. Roneish shares with us her approach to all things finance and talks more about our relationships with money. Roneish started off in the corporate financial world, but felt there was something missing. Until she started her business MoneyHeave, she never realised there was such a need for financial knowledge and clarity, by so many people. In fact 1 in 3 people in the UK are financially illiterate. There are no topics covering this currently in the school curriculum. Roneish believes that when you know and understand your worth, especially in a business environment, then you will charge what you are worth too. You can find out more about this on our recorded webinar with Roneish which includes a couple of special offers too! 23 Sep 2022 | To Be or To Do? THAT is the question | 00:13:21
To do or to be? That is the question! It’s the first question that Sarah Hamilton-Gill asks you on this podcast. This episode is a reflective one, and recorded after the Corfu Luxury Female Entrepreneurs’ Retreat in mid-September. Often as business owners we write to do lists, but what about a to be list? Just being, is very empowering, and something that none of us do enough of. But what actually does it mean? Sarah explains more in this podcast. A lot of it relates to self-care, looking after ourselves, being energised, gaining clarity, planning and strategising. To be the best that we can be inside and outside of our businesses, we need to first be the best that we can be ourselves. Time out, sleep and activities that make you joyful or happy, are all essential. 27 May 2022 | Riding the consulting rollercoaster | 00:28:58
In this episode Sarah talks about the rollercoaster of being a consultant and how you can’t afford to take your eyes off of business development, no matter how busy you get. Now, more than ever, social media and business development is key. It’s essential to be intentional though. What are the niche groups that are most beneficial to your business? It’s also essential not to forget your previous clients, in your search for new ones. Make sure you stay in touch, check in with them regularly, because they may be needing your services again soon too. You don’t have to spend hours on business development, but you do need to do it regularly. Scheduling ½ an hour a day in your diary is perfect. But if you are busy why not ask for assistance from a VA, PA or marketing assistant? Another of Sarah’s top tips is to block out a couple of hours and schedule your social media posts, using something like Hootsuite or Sprout Social. She shares many more in this podcast. 13 May 2022 | Loneliness and working from home | 00:10:15
As it’s mental health week, in this podcast Sarah discusses loneliness and what this means when you are a consultant, often working on your own. Having a support network around you is essential. This can also sometimes be the reason that consultants decide to return to the corporate world, as they miss having a team, or people around them. There are things that you can do, in order to raise your energy, so that you don’t feel isolated. For example those who have attended the Leap into HR Consulting Virtual Bootcamp have said that the support and on-going community during and after, with those who have been on the same or similar journey, really makes a difference. This is also why Sarah set up a private Facebook group which is aimed at HR consultants who are looking at growing and developing their business. It’s free to join, but there is a real sense of community. Sarah goes on to discuss the recent comments by Lord Alan Sugar about working from home, and how they have created a lot of discussions. 01 Apr 2022 | Blow your own trumpet | 00:11:00
In this episode Sarah talks about blowing your own trumpet or tooting your own horn – telling people about your skills, achievements, and successes. It’s not about bragging for the sake of it but about demonstrating that you can do what you say you can do, especially when this is recognised by others. It’s not always something that comes easy to consultants, but it is important to show your worth and the value that you bring to your clients. And as it’s the time of year for awards ceremonies, Sarah talks about why they can be a great way to build your confidence and your credibility. 04 Mar 2022 | Getting your first client | 00:20:51
In this episode Sarah talks about getting your first client. There are two elements to this which are (1) the processes and (2) the mental challenges, both of which she goes into greater detail on. The processes include how you get your clients. For example do you have the clarity around who your ideal client is, the type of business they are, or what your niche will be? All of these are essential, and are covered in the Virtual Leap into HR Consulting Bootcamp Plus and Bootcamp Flex. Looking at the mental challenges, this brings with it various barriers including money, as you have to invoice, and ask to be paid, whereas in the corporate world, there is a finance person or team behind you who does all of this. In this episode sarah is joined by James Carman, the founder of 365 People Support. James’ niche is hospitality, and in particular overcoming people challenges in businesses such as pubs and restaurants. James talks honestly about how it took him 3 months of running his business before he got his first client. He was confident that he had all his ducks in a row, and was ready to go, and spent that time building relationships and trust with key businesses that he had researched were within his niche market. James is also currently studying his ILM in coaching, and is looking forward to making coaching new start-ups part of his niche moving forward. -- Buy Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD’s No. 1 Amazon Best Selling Business book as a paperback, audible or eBook: https://amzn.to/3HX8SjS Connect with Sarah on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/SarahHGLI Follow us on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/LINLeap Connect with James Carman on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/JamesCLIn Listen to our other podcasts: https://bit.ly/3B8VC96 Visit our website: https://bit.ly/WebLeapInto Follow us on Eventbrite for all of our latest free to attend webinars and events: https://bit.ly/LeapIntoEvents
18 Feb 2022 | Navigating the HR career crossroads | 00:15:46
Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD talks about the many reasons for reaching a crossroads in your career. For example you may be looking for more flexibility due to your personal circumstances, or maybe you have been made redundant? -- Sarah is joined by Gemma Bromfield ACIPD, MD of Go Beyond HR Consultancy Ltd. Gemma found herself at that crossroads last October, when she was made redundant. Setting up her own consulting business had always been in her 5-year plan. Initially, she had thought about applying for other jobs, but none of the roles she saw were a great fit, and with her redundancy monies, she decided it was time to take the leap. Gemma talks openly and honestly about not missing the corporate world, and now having the freedom to innovate and opportunities to be creative and is now excited at the start of every day, eager to see what she can achieve. She launches her business in March 2022. Gemma highly recommends the Leap into HR Consulting Virtual Bootcamp saying “I would recommend the Bootcamp to anyone who finds themselves where I was, or who wants to set up their own HR consultancy. There’s such a supportive network of people around you, all on the same journey, and we all have each other’s backs.” -- Connect with Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/LISHG Connect with Gemma Bromfield ACIPD of Go Beyond HR Consultancy Ltd on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/GemmaBLI Join the Leap into HR Consulting Business Growth Group on Facebook: https://bit.ly/LeapIntoBusiness Buy Sarah’s book in paperback, eBook or NEW Audible: https://amzn.to/3HX8SjS Website: https://bit.ly/WebLeapInto

Why not complete it yourself now? (drop us and email and we will send you a link) add in email to aaronct@leapintoconsulting.com In this podcast, Sarah is joined by Melanie Stevens, the founder of Focus on HR. Melanie has a blended career which has different aspects to it. She went through the Bootcamp in late 2021. Melanie talks about where she is in her business and that she has worked as an Associate with other HR consultants, since becoming self-employed. In her experience there is so much work out there and she has become very busy, very quickly, which was something that she wasn’t expecting. 03 Dec 2021 | Your wellbeing is essential for the health of your business | 00:21:28
In this episode Sarah talks about health and wellbeing, something that is particularly essential when running your own business. When you are working from home or for yourself it brings with it the flexibility to work the hours that you want to, which includes being able to take time away during the traditional office hours to do other things, eg family commitments or a break away from your desk to go for a swim or walk the dog. But not stepping away from your desk, brings with it real health implications which Sarah has recently discussed on LinkedIn. Read more about this by following Sarah on LinkedIn (link below). Today Sarah is joined by Bootcamp Graduate Nicky Buckley who is the MD of East Midlands HR Consulting Ltd. Nicky started her business in 2019 after becoming disillusioned with her corporate role, which often saw her working 12 hour days, eating into her free time and weekends. Nicky found the Leap into HR Consulting virtual Bootcamp invaluable, especially in gaining the clarity she needed to move forwards. Nicky is now also working with some of the partners who she was introduced to via the bootcamp. This theme for this episode is consistency. Sarah talks about the rollercoaster of having your own business and that it’s essential to put time aside every week for your own business development. She also discusses the importance of daily habits. For example networking and social media posting, where scheduling for example is very useful to be able to ensure even when you aren’t around that you are drip-feeding posts to your followers. However it’s still essential to make time to answer any questions or comments, and like or love posts. Today Sarah is joined by Laura Johnson MCIPD, who started her company Open HR Consulting Ltd in July 2021. Coming from a charity background with Oxfam, Laura’s niche is small charities, social enterprises and not for profits. In Episode 11 Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD talks about how all new businesses start with small acorns, and that it’s ok to have one or two clients to get going. Sarah reminisces on starting her business when she had no clients. There was no social media, so it was doubly important to get out and about and network. During the pandemic this hasn’t been possible, but being able to meet your clients face to face really does make a difference. Sarah is joined by Steve Carpenter, MD of Herts HR Ltd, who is one of her Bootcamp graduates. Steve discusses how until he attended the Bootcamp he was going to be a generalist HR consultant, but that due to the Bootcamp he realised that he needed to find his niche client. This gave him clarity and increased his confidence. He goes on to talk about how invaluable he has found the support of the community groups run after he graduated from Bootcamp. Being a sole HR consultant can be a lonely place but thanks to collaborations, help and support, this has and continues to really help during good and challenging times.
