15 Nov 2023Ep.78: What 12 Failed Startups Taught Me About Success: Put Your People Skills First, with Adrian Knight00:55:06

It's a truism often repeated but not always fully appreciated that success is the result of many failures; this week I'm chatting with an entrepreneur who can confirm this from direct experience! After 12 failed startups and a unique career journey, Adrian Knight is now a business turnaround expert and acquirer of companies. This role means he has examined in great detail and considered buying hundreds of businesses over the years, giving him another unique insight into what makes a successful company tick, compared to what leads it into troubled waters.

This is a great conversation with a key message at it's centre: the most important skill for entrepreneurs, leaders and managers alike is being good with people.

15 Jan 2025Ep.152: Why the Future of Work is Human-centric Leadership, Lessons from the Sensei Leader, with Jim Bouchard | Leadership podcasts01:22:53

The 'Future of Work' has been a hot topic for a while now, and in today's episode my guest Jim Bouchard makes a compelling argument that human-centric leadership should be at the core of whatever workplaces look like in the future.

His personal story from music to addiction to martial arts and finally leadership activist provides a relevant, fascinating backdrop to Jim's approach to leadership, speaking, and life. He's a true pleasure to converse with and in this episode we explore the essence of leadership, the importance of putting people first, the journey of transformation, and the need for self-awareness.

We also discuss the balance between management and leadership, the significance of a human-centric approach for the evolving dynamics of the workplace, including the impact of remote work and generational differences. There's an emphasis on the necessity of creating work cultures that prioritise care and connection, understanding individuals beyond generalised labels, presence and engagement in leadership roles, and the value of vulnerability.

Jim truly is the Leadership Sensei, and there's something in this conversation for everyone, no matter where you are in your leader's journey.

02 Oct 2024Ep.132: The Crucial Role of Humor At Work and How To Not Take Yourself Too Seriously, with Conor Cunneen | The Leadership Podcast01:12:57

If you've spent any time working in a corporate environment, then you've probably been told many times that 'leaders are to be taken seriously' and 'the workplace is no place for silliness or joking around'. In today's episode we're going to be challenging that myth. Just because business is serious doesn't mean the humans within that environment can't have a bit of fun and laughter. Busting that myth with me is guest Conor Cunneen, and together we'll be exploring the powerful role of Humour, Intentionality, paying Compliments and Gratitude in leadership and the two sides of the coin that is supporting others and building up yourself too.

We even found room for a joke or two, and a few controversial thoughts, like why Steve Jobs is not the kind of leader you should aspire to be...

04 Dec 2024Ep.141: Creating the Right Weather and Why Who You Are is How You Lead, with Scott J Allen | Leadership Podcast for New Leaders01:05:28

One thing I learned from talking to Scott J Allen? There are 180 different cognitive biases. That seems like a lot..? Anyway, in this week's episode Scott and I explore key themes in leadership, from the importance of psychological safety, self-awareness, and maturity to the role of cognitive biases in decision-making and the necessity for leaders to co-create solutions with their teams.

We revisited last week's topic of ethics and decision-making processes, and also chatted about why cultivating a positive organizational culture, and the need for effective leadership training, are so crucial to building successful teams.

A great discussion with a guest as passionate about great leadership as I am! Thanks again Scott.

20 Mar 2024Ep.99: A.I. Literacy, the Future of Work, and Avoiding Micro-Management, with Denzil Eden00:56:37

Are you A.I. Literate?

This week, I'm joined by Denzil Eden, founder of Smarty.ai. We'll be talking tech and the role AI has to play in our workplace today and our careers tomorrow, a.k.a. the future of work! We also cover what the successful company of the future could look like and the beginnings of those changes that we can already see, including the rising power of curated, intentional employee experiences rather than the old school "enforced fun" model.

Denzil shares insights from her Founder's journey, beginning with answering the question "What would you work on if you could only do one thing for the rest of your life?", a difficult few years in the early life of her company, and the many leadership lessons earned along the way; including why micro-management doesn't work, and what you should do instead.. Denzil also speaks about her experiences as a female tech founder and how that has changed her perspective on diversity in the industry.

03 Jul 2024Ep.119: Adapt and Thrive - Leadership Tips for High Performing Teams, with Joey Lye | The Leadership Podcast for New Managers00:51:28

Can you think of a better person to talk to about teamwork, high performance, or leadership than a former olympic athlete? Especially one from a team-based sport?

No? Well, you're in luck then. Because today I’m chatting to Olympian and Coach, Joey Lye, about confidence, high performance, how to adapt and thrive, and her experiences of teamwork, leadership and crisis on the world’s stage as a competitor at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 - a.k.a. the ‘Covid Games’. We cover several of the big topics of leadership and high-performing teams this week, including managing imposter syndrome, building confidence, and adjusting to the unexpected (by learning to adapt and thrive!).

Sports aren't usually my thing, as many of you know, but that doesn't mean I don't recognise the value and lessons to be learnt from awesome people like Joey; it was a great conversation and you'll find loads of useful leadership tips in this episode.

Introvert or Extrovert...? As a society we often fall into the trap of viewing these as binary conditions with a confrontational, 'us versus them' relationship. BUT, as I learned from this week's amazing podcast guest, Tom Cleary, the truth is they are not absolutes, nor should they be set against each other.

13 Nov 2024Ep.138: Essential Leadership: The Determining Factor For Success In Any Team, with Thomas Harris | Leadership Podcast for New Leaders01:03:22

Hands up who has worked for a bad manager, toxic boss, or terrible leader?

I've been known to say that everyone has a story of a bad manager, but far fewer have a story of a great one - and that's really what Leading with integrity is all about: flipping that narrative. So meeting this week's guest, Thomas Harris, and hearing his similar take on it was highly rewarding. In his own words, he wants to create a world where great leadership is the norm and not the anomaly.

Today, Thomas and I explore the critical role of leadership in organizations, emphasizing that effective leadership is essential for team success and overall organizational health. We discuss the importance of defining leadership correctly, the differences between leadership and management, and the common myths surrounding leadership. We also touch on the impact of bad leadership on individuals and teams, and the necessity for leaders to prioritize the mission and the well-being of their team members. This is a conversation about the complexities of leadership, the importance of different perspectives, the flaws in traditional practices, and the necessity of listening.

This week I'm speaking with HR Professional, Katie Howard, who's on a mission to put the FUN back into HR. We talk about the red flags to watch out for in companies and in leaders, the pace of change, what great leadership looks like. 26 Jun 2024Ep.118: Is Your Ladder Leaning On the Right Building? Leading with Purpose as Your Authentic Self, with Eric Sardina | Leadership Podcast01:21:51

Are you the Luke Skywalker in the hero's journey of your life? (Or Harry Potter, if that's more your thing. No judgement..).

Have you figured out your purpose? In career, in life, for some it’s a divine calling closely to their beliefs and for others it’s simply about finding the intersection of what they’re good at, what they enjoy, and what they can have the most impact by doing. Whatever the underlying logic, finding your purpose or mission in life can be a truly transformational moment. For leaders it's a key step in being able to lead authentically, essential for trust-building and success in the long-term.

My guest today is Eric Sardina, an executive coach who helps his clients find meaning, purpose, success, and overwhelming joy in their lives. He offers a great metaphor for purpose, which I've used in the episode title: it's about making sure the ladder you're climbing is leaning on the right building! We touch on so many important topics in today's conversation, but always tied back to purpose, authenticity, and leadership.

What gets you out of bed in the morning? The first bit of common ground in this week's episode was between guest Chrisa Z Boyce and myself in answering this question: Coffee.

Are you on the right bus? (i.e. career path!)

If yes, that's great news... how did you do it?

If no, don't panic. You don't have to stay on the wrong one.

This week's podcast guest, Angela Burgess, has had something of an unconventional career path so far and is well placed to explain what to do to navigate change, find your path to a career you love. On top of that, Angela's background in the world of nonprofits also gives a uniquely interesting perspective on leadership and success.

We talk about everything from the pressure of feeling like you need to know what your career will look like before you've even left school as opposed to the reality that most of us discover once we actually enter the workforce, the similarities and differences between the private and not-for-profit sectors, as well as the leadership lessons to be had from all of this. All explored through the lens of Angela's own experiences from majoring in Spanish and Communication studies to entering the wealth management industry, and then later leaving to work in a nonprofit.

24 Jan 2024Ep.91: Why Most Leadership Advice Doesn't Work For Women in leadership, with Libby Vincent01:26:26

Are the office toilets the best place to do your internal networking? I'm firmly in the "no, very no, all of the no" camp. How about you?

This is one of the less serious topics that Libby Vincent and I discuss in this week's episode, although it does link into an important issue. Tune in now to hear more about Libby's journey to helping women in leadership, from her role in combining executive teams post-mergers, assisting in onboarding new executives, how she observed disparities in the ways men and women navigated these challenges and why the books, advice, and processes that worked for men seemed to fall short for women. We chat about the many double standards, inconsistencies, and challenges for leaders in the modern workplace (especially when it isn't as modern as we think it is!), Libby's own leadership experiences, and why Jean-Luc Picard comes up yet again...

05 Jun 2024Ep.115: Intentional Leadership and Playing To Your Strengths, with Juan Alvarado01:25:59

Start With Why... or should it be: Start With Who?

Today I'm speaking with Juan Alvarado, Keynote Speaker, Leadership Trainer, Podcaster, and US Amry Veteran about how he discovered Gallup Strengths, became a certified coach, and uses it to help leaders be more intentional about their leadership while knowing & playing to their own strengths. Juan also talks about his experiences with PTSD and how it led to a conflict that in the end made his marriage stronger; and therefore why conflict is a positive, not something to be avoided in business or in life.

Listening to Juan speak about the Strengths model brought two thoughts immediately to mind:

  1. Not all personality tests are created equal, and

  2. Isn't it incredible watching a passionate speaker talk on something they care deeply about, understand extremely well and, in this case, are actively using to help others? A true privelidge to witness, and what a brilliant guest!

22 Jan 2025Ep.153: Future-Proofing Talent Acquisition - AI, Human Potential, Leadership, and Finding Your Fit, with Scott Morris | Leadership podcasts01:19:46

When was the last time you had to hire someone? And how well did that hiring process work for you during the experience?

A lot of times the answer to that question is a resounding, even a pained, 'Not well'.

Which is why this week's conversation on Leading with Integrity with guest Scott Morris is so interesting. And why the work he and PropulsionAI are doing has such potential. In today's episode we'll explore the transformative power of innovative hiring practices and great leadership. We discuss the importance of creating a safe environment for idea generation, the significance of well-defined job descriptions, the role of technology (particularly AI) in enhancing recruitment processes. We also chat employee engagement, ownership vs accountability vs empowerment, the evolving role of recruiters, leaders & managers in a technology-driven world, the importance of relationship-building, and complex decision-making.

We try to address the issue of bias in hiring practices and the significant costs associated with bad hires, and hear Scott's personal leadership experiences and insights. Another really enjoyable conversation, useful for leaders, hiring managers, and job seekers alike.
