28 Sep 2022TFTW: The Cheapness of People00:02:56

They say People are our most important asset. Not everyone acts accordingly.

Do we have to run organisations without Heart? We are entering difficult times, really difficult and challenging times, and organisations like Better.com and P&O are taking decisions which hurt and traumatise people. Some consultancies advise that quick and sharp cuts are best ... but for whom? I would suggest certainly not those on the receiving end.

The practice of Fire and Rehire is not a very nice way to do business.

28 Sep 2022What do people understand bullying to be? | with Thom Dennis 00:20:30

"Remember that heady rush of excitement and adrenalin which most people experience when they are given, or take, a position of power over someone or indeed something, else." As Sir John Dalberg-Acton wrote in 1857, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men..."

In this full-ranging talk as part of SiL's Profitable Wellbeing Dialogue series, Thom explores the differences between bullying and harassment and offers things that both organisations and individuals can do to eliminate harassment and protect themselves, and benefit the bottom line at the same time.

28 Sep 2022TFTW: COP26 and Calling for Fundamental Change00:03:10

Part of the resistance to change is a willingness to take tentative steps; these can be slow and give a sense of safety. The trouble is they don't actually achieve anything when the need is urgent and major. Companies need to rethink the way they do business, especially examining their Purpose for validity and currency today.

Small steps won't cut it for the companies that are going to be thriving in 5-10 years' time

28 Sep 2022TFTW: Taking a Stand for Rainforests 00:03:47

Taking a Stand for Rainforests, Indigenous People & Climate Change - Being a Leader & Taking Action.

Leaders are under such enormous pressure to run their companies how they always have - there are so many priorities, indeed many more than there were before the pandemic, before Brexit, before the invasion of Ukraine. And at the same time, one of the largest carbon sinks on earth, which is occupied by indigenous people, the Amazon Rainforest is under threat by commercial interests.

Things have to change, priorities have to change, and this takes courage. Leaders have to show courage in the face of short term pressures.

28 Sep 2022TFTW: The difference between guilt and shame00:04:22

"Shame is a focus on self and guilt is a focus on behaviour"

Inspired by Brene Brown's Ted talk on "Listening to shame", Thom Dennis discusses the power of guilt, and the destructive nature of shame. There is no evidence to support the contention that shame as a method of punishment or to change behaviour works. In actual fact it produces more of the negative behaviour by amplifying the individual's negative view of themselves. Guilt, on the other hand encourages a change in behaviour because it emphasises the dissonance between the bad behaviour and the individual's values.

18 Oct 2023Psychiatry, Mental Wellbeing, Empathy & Power | with Dr Sridevi Kalidindi CBE00:40:24

Psychiatry, Mental Wellbeing, Empathy & Power Skills in the Workplace.

What made you become a psychiatrist? You're the founder and CEO of Clip Global, which is a workforce, wellbeing and development service where you provide employees with personalized holistic. science-backed plans so they can lead healthier, fulfilled lives. It sounds incredible, but how do you go about fulfilling that brief? I guess you're using AI now and developing it if you're using an app, how do you see that developing with AI? Do you think that mental health is the new pandemic? Do you think really that there's an increasing number of leaders who are beginning to genuinely care more about their employees and see why that is so important to the business for preventing people from being off sick, but for things that you can't necessarily see? Can you say a little bit more about the key life indicators, what they are and how you're monitoring and keeping a close look on them? You'd like to think that there are more leaders taking the right action. What do you think we need to do to persuade those that perhaps don't really see the need for this, in spite of the fact that the stats as far as the bottom line are concerned are pretty persuasive? It seems there's a lot of leaders who still don't want to really engage with that. So how could we persuade them to be more involved and take a greater level of responsibility? Do CEOs find it a bit scary to engage with an organization which is led by a psychiatrist? How important do you think being empathetic is now for people in positions of responsibility? Have you come across the fact that there are reports of AI showing more empathy than humans? Is hybrid working detrimental to the need to belong to a community? What do you think it is that's making people (managers) resist the hybrid working as a model? There are two types of leadership, the older more directive style and the newer servant leader style. So do you see the latter style of leadership emerging more today? How important is the skill of presence in leadership? So just to round things up, can you give us say three tips on how leaders can improve, how they help employees with their mental health?

28 Sep 2022TFTW: Remote Employee Monitoring Software00:03:48

The Bargain - Remote Employee Monitoring Software and their subjects, welcoming & resistant.

Remote Employee Monitoring Software has proliferated. There are now eight of the top 10 US employers by number of employees, private employers - companies that hire huge numbers of people, doing some form of individual employee productivity monitoring, in many cases in real time.

This is a controversial strategy which some people find intrusive and insulting whilst others find a boon.

It can be argued that using such software destroys trust and actually encourages the behaviour it is designed to eradicate.

28 Sep 2022TFTW: The Power of Fear & How to Overcome it00:03:46

How does Fear affect behaviour in organisations? If we can overcome fear at work then we can gain communication, transparency, creativity and innovation. Thom Dennis, CEO of Serenity in Leadership reflects on his experience.

28 Sep 2022TFTW: The Infinite Game - Adopting a Mindset for the Future00:03:21

Based on a conversation between Simon Sinek and Brené Brown, Thom highlights the difference between Finite and Infinite games and thinking. In finite games, like football or athletics, the players are known, the rules are fixed, and the endpoint is clear. Winners and losers are easily identified.

In infinite games, like business or politics or life itself, the players come and go, the rules are changeable, and there is no defined endpoint. There are no winners or losers in an infinite game; there is only ahead and behind.

Many of the struggles that organizations face exist simply because their leaders were playing with a finite mindset in an infinite game. These organizations tend to lag behind in innovation, discretionary effort, morale, inclusion and ultimately performance.

The leaders who embrace an infinite mindset, in stark contrast, build stronger, more innovative, more inspiring organizations. Their people trust each other and their leaders. They have the resilience to thrive in an ever-changing world, while their competitors fall by the wayside. Ultimately, they are the ones who can lead the rest of us into the future.

The original ideas come from James P Carse's book 'Finite and Infinite Games' (1986) which offers two contrasting viewpoints on how to live your life, whether you’re engaging in sexual relationships or warfare. Carse argues that any activity can be seen as either a finite or an infinite game, the former being end-oriented and the latter leading to infinite possibilities. He reveals how the world appears through the eyes of those who play with the finite or infinite in mind, and concludes that how and what games we play are our own choice.

28 Sep 2022TFTW: Cultivating Resilience - coping with uncertainty00:03:29

We're not going into a 'New Normal'. The flux we're experiencing is continuing, and will in uncertain ways indefinitely. That means we have to find ways to be resilient as change is accompanied by ongoing and in some cases, increasing anxiety.

In this Thought for the Week, CEO Thom Dennis discusses resilience in our current climate of uncertainty. How can leaders support their people at this present time?

28 Sep 2022TFTW: Taking a Courageous Stand00:03:41

This year, the dominant theme in Accenture’s Fjord Trends for 2022 points to shifts in people’s relationships—with colleagues, brands, society, places, and with those they care about. An increasing number of people are beginning to come face-to-face with the impact they’re having on the planet, and finally accepting they cannot go on behaving as though people were separate from Nature.

The youth of today are demanding higher, more ecological, more ethical standards of the companies they choose to give their employment to. It's likely that this, perhaps more than most other influences will bring about the changes that are needed for the coming years.

30 Sep 2022Acknowledging Burnout | with Yewande Faloyin00:31:39

We want to do the best we can but at the same time we are facing more and more challenges. People are feeling the pressure to perform with many things calling us to action. The easier answer is to work harder and harder, but what we are increasingly seeing is that we are not able to cope anymore; our bodies are only capable of doing so much.

How do we recognise this burnout out? How do we deal with it? What is clear is that hiding it doesn't work; we have to face up to it and we have to re-prioritize, both as businesses and as individuals.

28 Sep 2022TFTW: Suicide - A Tragic Loss00:03:31

How could a man so decorated and loved for his courage, professionalism and leadership take his own life, leaving family and friends behind? I can’t even guess at the turmoil and desperation he must have felt in making such a tragic decision.

However courageous we are, however resilient we’ve been, sometimes something happens that knocks through the veneer. It’s at that moment we all need support, and paradoxically it can also be a moment when we cannot ask for, or find the support we need.

It’s not the kind word we need then so much as the kind ear. Sometimes it’s not about hearing something, but simply being heard - without judgement, just empathy.

28 Sep 2022Why leading collaboratively is so difficult | with Fiona Hathorn00:25:10

Collaboration is one of leadership’s biggest priorities. Why? C-Suite executives need the right competencies in order to lead change in a purposeful and proactive way - this means bringing the whole organisation with them. While diverse groups may not always feel comfortable to manage (and are often neglected because of this), the evidence shows that teams of like-minded (or non-diverse) individuals are unlikely to deliver exceptional results.

In her talk, Fiona Hathorn speaks about why conscious inclusion is not just a box-ticking exercise, but rather, an essential ingredient to delivering top performance, from business turnover and leadership deliverables to maintaining a competitive advantage in a global economy. Her talk touches on unconscious bias - but only briefly. It is primarily focused on improving business results and team performance.

28 Sep 2022Racism: It's not us, it's all out there! | with Raggi Kotak00:22:09

"We're all socialised and conditioned around the dynamics of racism. And it requires all of us to show up to bring the change that we want to see."

Serenity in Leadership's guest speaker, Raggi Kotak, is a human rights barrister with more than 20 years experience challenging issues such as racism, gender violence and mental health.

In this eye-opening dialogue, Raggi describes the daily regular encounters of racism she experienced as a child and the horrific experiences of racism she faced in the beginning of her law career. Her talk addresses how people refuse to acknowledge racism is in their organisations, and notes how the belief that it happens elsewhere often differs to the opinion of those working at a company. .

28 Sep 2022TFTW: Being a Role Model Leader00:03:58

We are all role models for someone, and the greater our profile, or footprint, the larger the impact we have. So whatever we do people will emulate, and some will amplify, for good or for bad. It's therefore for us to be sensitive, and responsible, for our actions. Divisiveness leads to anger and frustration. Care, kindness and active listening lead to the defusing of tension.

05 Oct 2023Healthy Masculinity and Gender Equity | with Ray Arata00:33:27

Ray Arata is the author of two books, Wake Up Man Up, Step Up: Transforming Your Wake Up Call to Emotional Health and Happiness and Showing Up: How Men Can Become Effective Allies in the Workplace. As an expert in leadership, inclusion, allyship, and emotional literacy, Ray leads from his heart and practices what he teaches in his own businesses and personal life. In this interview, he describes what first made him interested in the field of men and masculinity. Thom & Ray then go on to the term 'toxic' and explore how unhelpful it is in terms of masculinity; 'unhealthy' is a much better description which doesn't close everyone down. They discuss how important is it not to shame and blame men in order to get them to engage. There is enormous pain in so many men and shaming has only negative consequences. On the other hand gender equality will make men better and happier. Ray connects through the heart, and speaks about what love means to him. Finally they discuss allyship and the fundamental importance of accountability. 28 Sep 2022TFTW: Standing up for What is Right Takes Courage00:03:56

Standing out for Right calls for the essential leadership ability of being vulnerable and that requires great courage. If we know something is going wrong we must stand up and call it for what it is - fraud, dishonesty, cruelty. We may become unpopular and be excoriated but in the long run lives may be saved, and that surely makes it worth while.

28 Sep 2022TFTW: Importance of Delegating Responsibility00:03:20

28 Sep 2022TFTW: Practise Effectively00:04:15

The importance of rehearsal in leadership cannot be over-emphasised. Sometimes incredibly important decisions have to be made under duress, and impossible time constraints with massive potential consequences. If we have practised under similar situations, even if they are artificial, it equips leaders to be sharper, more decisive and less prone to allow stress to overcome them.

It is beholden on those who are given this level of responsibility in leadership to hone their skills so they are as prepared as possible for any eventuality.

06 Nov 2023Life Without a Tie: Finding your path amidst the noise | with Ray Martin00:50:13

Life Without a Tie: Finding your path amidst the noise, chaos and pressure to conform.

We don't always recognise the subtleties at play in our reality. Even when we do, we don't necessarily validate them as being significant. In this podcast between Thom Dennis and Ray Martin, they discuss the nature of synchronicity - why and how events that are unexpected can sometimes have a Universal perfection. They explore how committing to acts of service, however small, can lead to new beginnings and how life can provide us with 'confirmation signals' when we face difficult decisions, connecting with a higher form of guidance. Thom asked Ray to expand upon his 'Six Rules for Happiness', which include taking ownership for everything that happens to us, and the benefits of building powerful and sustainable relationships. It takes courage to live consciously, and Ray has discovered that trends such as minimalism and experientialism are on the rise as people try to simplify life in a complex world. They also touch on the leadership crisis of our generation, the nature of purpose and how it might find us, if and when we surrender to it, and what it means to be present. A lot to enjoy! Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

How is it that a rich, successful leader and owner of a large business can fire 900 of his employees on a 3-minute Zoom call? This shines a light on the clashing of the positive and negative traits of leadership, and Thom Dennis, in his Thought for the Week challenges the necessity for the negative traits, particularly because of their negative and traumatising effects on people.

What is it about Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his style of leadership that makes it so resonant and admirable for so many people today. Could it be that it is a projection of how we want our leaders to be? He is a role model for us in our times of chaos, change and uncertainty.

Courage, vulnerability, steadfastness in adversity, transparency are all traits we long for in our leaders, and seem to see so little of today. Clarity, strength, honesty, authenticity, these are all things we seek when uncertainty arouses fear.

In this Thought for the Week Thom Dennis mentions FemmeQ, a community of thought leaders, change makers, social activists and business leaders committed to creating new paradigms of thinking and acting in core sectors of society. 27 Sep 2022The Future of Leadership | with Laura Toop00:45:10

Why and How Must Leadership Style Change?

"We cannot solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them" Albert Einstein is often quoted as saying.

Listen or watch as Laura Toop is in conversation with Thom Dennis for The Inspire Summit, exploring the idea that...

FOR A DIFFERENT OUTCOME, THE LEADERSHIP STYLE MUST CHANGE

Now, more than ever before in our lifetimes, we need to re-think the leadership of the future, because the leadership which got us to this point, will not be the one that gets us out.

🧡 Our conversation explores…

✅ Why the leadership style of the past, is not the one for the future.

✅ The 3 pillars necessary for the future of leadership and a healthy organizational culture

✅ How it’s both men AND women that need to tap into their ‘feminine’ traits, and what we really mean by this.

✅ What action could look and feel like, drawing upon the experiences of those already adopting leadership styles that embrace the 3 pillars.

🧡

The Inspire Summit is the creation of CAROLE BOZKURT - Sales Coach, Business Mentor, who, throughout the month of August, has brought together some of the UK's leading coaches and consultants to talk to leaders, managers, and employees on a whole range of topics.

From career progression to personal branding and health and wellbeing, there is something for everyone.

28 Sep 2022TFTW: Liberating Potential - How do you unlock employee potential00:03:37

It's easy to jump to condemnation, to discard people whom we dislike or who irritate us. Be careful of what you might be discarding, the strengths and skills they may be able to offer, if only they're treated in such a way that the good can emerge.

How do you unlock employee potential? Rather than discard them, consider if they've been given the opportunity to learn about themselves. Perhaps they need a role with greater or different responsibility.

28 Sep 2022TFTW: The Great Awkward00:05:01

The Great Awkward - Thom Dennis on hybrid working challenges and The Great Awkward Return to Work.

It's a little early to tell about the success of hybrid working. It's a much more complex situation than at first appears, containing new issues that leadership have not encountered before.

What is important is for leaders to understand the various issues that are arising so they can make informed and positive decisions in order to get the very best from this dynamic situation, whilst ensuring that no-one is left behind or out.

We're now in what Brené Brown has christened "The Great Awkward return to work"

Thoughts from Crom Castle on Networking & Nature

28 Sep 2022TFTW: The Importance of Trust00:04:23

Issues around trust abound today. Leaders who try to force their strategies and ideologies reduce their people's trust which tends to encourage them to force more.

In order to create trust, you have to create a space in which people feel safe because when they feel safe, they can be vulnerable. Trust comes from vulnerability and vulnerability comes from trust.

28 Sep 2022TFTW: Power vs Compassion00:04:20

There are many examples of people in power doing things to suit their own needs, either to stay in favour with those with greater power, or to satisfy their own ego needs. There is much collateral damage which is caused as a result, and we are now seeing this style of disrespectful leadership being increasingly challenged. It's clear that what we need in order to be successful, in the widest but most relevant meaning of the word, is to be vulnerable, empathetic, compassionate and continuously maintain a listening stance.

28 Sep 2022TFTW: Unintended Consequences00:03:10

When we make decisions, it's important to look at the wider ramifications and by-products of those decisions. This calls for an unbiased look at the situation and how it will change as a result.

When we're keen on an idea it's quite easy to get into a 'wilful blindness' mindset which will prevent us from seeing what else will happen over and above what we intended.

Unintended consequences - it's worth taking the time to explore what they might be.

This episode is now live, here is a blurb about the podcast that Thom guested on:

Men feel more lonely, lost and not useful in society than ever in history.

Men are more likely to be romantically uninvolved, sexually dormant and friendless.

Only 40% of men have higher education and educated women don’t date uneducated men.

Males are not attaching to school, work or women.

What it is to be a man appears lost.

What is Manly?’ host Damian Andrews searches for the framework to be Manly.
