25 Mar 2024 | 57. How to own your mood - with Rachel Edmondson-Clarke - leadership psychologist | 00:31:11 | |
Rachel Edmondson-Clarke's journey from her receptionist in her mother's hair salon via collapsing on the boardroom floor to her mission driven coaching practice today is a voyage to behold. She sold me on the idea that we have to pay attention to and manage our moods as well as our emotions. (Pay attention to the difference here!). She has quite the turn of phrase: listening to the Whispers on her heart; making her soul's contract and more... In our conversation, we dug right into the importance of emotional intelligence, the challenges of transitioning into leadership roles, and the quest for personal significance over success. Rachel's story is a testament to the power of self-discovery and the courage to follow your heart's whispers! Unless that's a signal to visit your cardiologist - in which case I take no responsibility... Key Takeaways: The Power of Emotional Intelligence: Rachel's early years in her mother's salon taught her to read people and adjust her approach based on their mood. 09 Oct 2023 | 50. How to live with no regrets with Garin Hess CEO of Consensus | 00:26:03 | |
In the latest episode of the Practical Leadership Podcast I had the pleasure of interviewing Garin Hess, the founder and CEO of Consensus. Garin shared some profound insights during our conversation. One of the standout moments was when he quoted, "Too many men tiptoe through life trying to make it safely to death. I do not want to do that. I am grateful, regardless of how it turned out, that I was willing to take those risks." It's a good approach to life and leadership, a bit of risk-taking and pushing boundaries. Garin also reflected on his early leadership experiences, saying, "I used to be very self-conscious and afraid of leadership, and yet I was constantly being put in leadership positions. I eventually learned that for me, at least, what made the most sense was to stop thinking about and trying to improve on the deficiencies and just focus on my strengths." It's a powerful reminder for all leaders to focus on their strengths and those of your team rather than obsessing over their weaknesses. Finally, Garin shared a thought-provoking perspective on the role of a leader. He said, "You have to be willing to be looked at as a jerk, even though you're not trying to be. You don't want to act like one. But some people will think you are just because you're asking them to do hard things they don't want to do. And that's not being a jerk. That's being a leader." It's sometimes challenging but necessary in the role of a leader in pushing your team towards growth and success.
----------- *Self-awareness and focusing on strengths [00:01:21]* Garin Hess discusses his journey of self-awareness and the importance of focusing on strengths rather than obsessing over deficiencies. *Toxic deficiencies and the impact on leadership [00:03:26]* The conversation explores the concept of toxic deficiencies in leaders and how they can both hinder and contribute to success. *The difference between being nice and being good [00:05:29]* The discussion delves into the idea that being nice is not necessarily synonymous with being a good leader, and the potential drawbacks of prioritizing likability over achieving the mission. *The importance of joy in work [00:10:09]* Discussion on the difference between fun and joy in the workplace, and the quest for growth and challenges. *The consequences of not letting go [00:12:09]* The speaker shares a personal experience of waiting too long to let go of an underperforming employee and the negative impact it had on the team. *Maximizing strengths over weaknesses [00:15:03]* The importance of focusing on strengths and maximizing them, rather than trying to improve weaknesses, using the example of Michael Jordan's basketball skills. *The importance of taking risks [00:21:03]* Garin reflects on the quote that inspired him to take risks in life and how it changed the course of his career. *Regret minimization framework [00:21:43]* The concept of minimizing regrets by looking back from a future perspective and making choices to live our best lives. *Imagining our death to reduce regret [00:23:14]* Garin discusses the idea of imagining our death as a way to appreciate and safeguard the things we have in life, preventing future regrets. | |||

Kick the puppy and give it a cheese sandwich. (25:00) Mehdi and I bonded over our love of food & travel - you need to skip to 05:50 to get into the actual management stuff! I can only apologise for this episode's cocktail mixture of metaphors and ideas. We developed the Drumstick analogy, the now-famous Tounsi method, and talked about the joy of Norwegian hot dogs. Mehdi shared the best casual restaurant in Dubai. He shared how by asking simply "how is it *really* going?" you get beyond the very British "fine..." as a response and can truly understand where someone is. Mehdi learned a lot from a disastrous few years in the US, where he and his family hadn't expected the culture and environment to be as different as they experienced it to be. We talk about potentially being too persuasive. Does the leader's passion run the risk of overriding someone's common sense, and ask can nice be dangerous? Pre-mortems appear at 26:00 and Mehdi doesn't seem to have to dig too deep to uncover his French cultural disagreement with the British lack of assertiveness. Ultimately - he says that curiosity is stronger than fear. This was a conversation for the ages - we both hope you enjoy it. Tom talks about the importance of making unconscious culture more conscious. He believes that by focusing on tools rather than titles, we can provide effective leadership and management coaching. Tom shares his own journey and background and experiences that led him to his current work. One of the key points that Tom discusses is the need for leaders to be conscious of their impact on their teams. He speaks to the importance of creating a coaching culture within organisations, where leaders are actively involved in the growth and development of their team members. To shape culture, Tom introduces three essential tools: leadership, management, and coaching. He explains how these tools can improve team engagement and build a positive culture within organizations. It's fascinating to hear how these tools can be applied in different contexts and how they can make a significant difference. Both are important in Binda's eyes and both are linked to her passion for social mobility. She has worked with the Diana Award, which gave her with opportunities to grow and develop her skill set. She is also a big advocate for young people who are often not given the platform to share their voices and feelings. We discus the impact of covid on the social mobility of young people, and how SuttonTrust did some amazing stuff when it all went to hell. Peter's wealth of knowledge and expertise in mentoring social startups became evident as he shared his insights. He emphasized the importance of resilience, explaining how it serves as a driving force for individuals and organizations to overcome obstacles and make a lasting impact. Peter's own journey in the field has taught him that setbacks are inevitable, but it is our ability to bounce back and learn from these challenges that truly propels us forward. Authenticity, according to Peter, is another key ingredient in effecting social change. He stressed the significance of embracing one's true self and values when working towards a greater cause. By staying true to our beliefs and principles, we can inspire others and create a ripple effect that leads to meaningful transformation. One aspect of our conversation that particularly resonated with me was Peter's emphasis on the value of lived experience. Their firsthand knowledge allows them to connect with others on a deeper level and provide invaluable guidance and support. We also delved into the concept of sustainability, which Peter believes is crucial for long-term social change. He challenged the current systems and called for progressive actions that prioritize the well-being of both people and the planet. By adopting sustainable practices and questioning the status quo, we can create a more equitable and inclusive society. As our conversation drew to a close, Peter had a powerful message for global audiences. He encouraged individuals to embrace their authenticity and use it as a catalyst for change. Today I'm joined by Monique Carayol, a leadership coach and consultant, who will be discussing the concept of being a brave leader. Monique starts off by explaining that being a brave leader goes beyond just being fearless. It means practicing authentic, compassionate, and inclusive leadership. Her vision is to create a global movement of brave leaders who empower others to reach their full potential. One of the key points Monique highlights is the importance of teaching and supporting leaders on their journey. She believes that by challenging negative thoughts and intentionally catastrophising, leaders can overcome their fears and become more courageous in their decision-making. Monique shares a powerful tool that she uses with her clients - asking the question, "Is it true?" This simple question helps challenge false beliefs and allows leaders to see situations from a different perspective. By questioning the validity of their thoughts, leaders can make more informed and rational decisions. Understanding the emotions and thoughts of team members is another crucial aspect of being a brave leader. Monique emphasises the value of active listening and creating a safe space for open communication. By truly understanding their team members, leaders can build trust and foster a positive work environment. Seeking advice from senior leaders is another valuable tip she shares. Monique believes that learning from those who have already walked the path of leadership can provide valuable insights and guidance. By seeking advice and mentorship, leaders can continue to grow and develop their own leadership skills. If you want to connect with Monique and learn more about her work, you can find her on LinkedIn. She is also a co-founder of the Bravery in the Boardroom movement, which aims to inspire and empower leaders to be brave in their decision-making.

15 Apr 2024 | 60. How to get paid even more for your expertise - with Peter Thomson | 00:35:33 | |
Peter Thomson is the UK's most prolific business development author with immense experience in the field. His story is fascinating as thought he had he retired at 42, only to have to reinvent himself when the sale of his business went pear-shaped. We have an enlightening discussion about the profound impact of personal identity on one's level of success. It's a concept that people will "never consistently do who they are not." This understanding will frame much of our discussion and the insights shared. We delve deep into the role of identity in personal development, particular in training. The conversation reveals how our identity shapes our values and beliefs, and ultimately determines the long-term change and success we achieve. Peter shared his perspectives on how training should be viewed and approached. There is an emphasis on understanding how to align the skills, knowledge, and expertise we're teaching someone with who they are. This revelation is based on the understanding that people are consistent with who they are, and tend to resist who they are not. So the efficacy of training lies greatly in how much it resonates with the person's identity. This information would be incomplete without giving a synopsis of Peter’s insightful book 'PAID'. It provides guidance on how to leverage the discussed concepts, the keywords being: pricing oneself appropriately, positioning as an expert, providing valuable content, and growing a client base. How do you ensure you're paid what you're worth? Then we dig into strategies for execs looking to move from formal employment to independent consulting. Peter gives a detailed explanation of a successful approach, from the importance of providing incredible value, to setting the right price for the value delivered. There's a lot to learn here. We also talk about ways you can expand your client base, with emphasis on optimising your referral process. Rather than focusing on irregular referrals, setting up a systematic referral process tremendously boosts growth. The keyword for a successful referral system is personal introductions. 29 Jul 2024 | 75. How to build with the exit in mind - Laurie Barkman - The Business Transition Sherpa | 00:27:28 | |
Today, we dive into the essential topic of building a business with the end in mind. My guest is Laurie Barkman, author of the Business Transition Handbook and a seasoned Business Transition Sherpa. Laurie shares invaluable insights and strategies on preparing for a successful business exit. Whether you're a new entrepreneur or a seasoned business owner, this episode is packed with practical advice to help you plan your business journey from start to finish. Laurie begins by explaining the concept of a Business Transition Sherpa. Think of a Sherpa guiding climbers up Mount Everest. Laurie provides similar guidance, but for business owners navigating the complex terrain of succession planning and business transitions. She emphasises that the process should start early, ideally years before the actual exit, to ensure a seamless and profitable transition. One of the key frameworks Laurie discusses is the "three-legged stool" of business readiness. This includes personal readiness, business readiness, and financial readiness. She highlights the importance of evaluating these areas regularly to identify any gaps or risks that could impact the business's value or the owner's ability to exit successfully. Laurie also talks about the significance of understanding what makes a business saleable. It's not just about having a profitable company but also about having transferable value that buyers find attractive. This includes having solid operational systems, a reliable customer base, and minimizing risks that could deter potential buyers. Another critical point Laurie makes is about the emotional aspect of selling a business. For many owners, their business is like a child, making the decision to sell highly emotional. Laurie addresses the need to balance logic and emotion in business decisions, ensuring that the head, heart, and wallet are all considered. Key Elements Discussed
Tune in to hear Laurie Barkman's expert advice on building with the exit in mind, ensuring that your business journey is well-planned and profitable. You can find Laurie and her resources at https://thebusinesstransitionsherpa.com/. |
