22 Mar 2022E2: What To Ask Yourself NOW to Create Real Change in The Way You Lead00:15:04

I had a leadership interview ready to post for this episode of Power Presence Academy. Instead, I decided to use the episode to offer you a leadership challenge.

In light of everything that's going on right now in Russia and Ukraine, I think it's time to pause, step back, and have a different type of conversation. A somber, reflective one.

I wanted to share some of my thoughts about what I see as our presenting leadership challenge and a turning point in these unsettling times. If we want to create a different leadership story in an organization, how we lead has to be different.

Join me in this episode not for the usual tips or advice, but for deeper self-reflection.

In this episode, I’ll share:

  • The question I believe we as leaders need to ask ourselves now to create real change in how we lead
  • A challenge to make one change in how you show up as a leader

Power Presence Academy: Practical Wisdom for Leaders is the go-to podcast for anyone who leads. Your host is Janet Ioli, a leadership and human development expert, sought-after coach and advisor to global executives, and former executive with experience in four Fortune 100 companies.

Noteworthy Quotes from this episode

“Now more than ever, I think we're being called to step up and lead.”

“The reality is we want to change, we want things to be better. We all want that. We're all trying the best we can and despite our best intentions, I think ‘What do I do?’ is the wrong question we're asking.”

“What if the question we should really be asking ourselves isn’t about doing at all? And the question is, what type of leader do I need to be in these times?”

“What we think, say, and do, and how we make people feel every moment as a leader has an enormous impact on everything and everyone around us.”

“We want to be loved. We want to be seen as good and worthy. And we want to feel safe. So, that creates reactive impulses. And those impulses are, I want to please people, I want to please the organization, I want to prove my worthiness, I want to protect myself from criticism and rejection.”

“This fear of not measuring up puts us in this reactive place of pleasing, pushing, protecting, and doing whatever is necessary to meet these external standards of approval and success.”

“Leadership involves intentionally creating the future, not just reacting to our present circumstances to get by.“

“I really believe that change starts with each one of us making the decision to create the positive future we envision rather than just reacting to the circumstances around us, and that starts with our choices every single momen

14 Jun 2022E8: Didn't Get the Big Promotion? How to Rebound Gracefully00:18:51

You've paid your dues and you've worked grueling 60-hour weeks. You have all the skills and qualifications for the next level job you were up for but you still didn’t get that promotion.

This unexpected disappointment happens to many of us sometime in our careers.  When it does, you may feel angry and betrayed. Understandably, your immediate gut reaction might be to polish your resume and start looking for a new job where you feel appreciated and valued.

As a coach to executives, I’ve seen this script play out more times than I can count.

What I know for sure is that how you behave immediately following such a blow is critical.   Others are watching your reaction and that reaction creates a story about your resilience as a leader and how you handle setbacks.  Your reputation and personal leadership brand are not only created by how you act when you feel in control or succeed but also when you experience failure.

In this episode, I’ll share 4 steps to rebound gracefully and move on after not getting that promotion you expected.

In this episode I’ll talk candidly about:

  • Why the way you react to not getting the promotion you feel you deserved says a lot about who you are as a leader
  • 4 steps to rebound gracefully after not getting the promotion you’ve been preparing for
  • My perspective as an executive coach about what to think about as you move forward

Power Presence Academy: Practical Wisdom for Leaders is the go-to podcast for anyone who leads. Your host is Janet Ioli, a leadership and human development expert, sought-after coach and advisor to global executives, and former executive .

Noteworthy Quotes from this episode
“How you act when you don't get the job is just as important as how you act as a leader day in and day out."
“Moving on: Express your disappointment. solicit feedback, and pledge support.”
“Think about the disappointment like a wave. The key is to feel it, acknowledge it, process it, recover from it, and then start swimming forward - not to just wallow in it.”
“Were you so attached to the thought of this promotion that you lost sight of its real importance in the bigger scheme of things?”
“You are not defined by a job title or a job, period.”
“Rebounding with grace takes you out of the victim role. It empowers you to move on. And it also creates new possibilities for the future that you may have not considered.”

“Companies who want to be relevant need to pay closer attention to women as direct consumers of goods and services.”

“50/50 Women on Boards also has training programs with different levels of readiness that can provide you with the initial steps of finding out what being on a board is about and where you fit."

“Network. Network. Network. Your personal network will serve you well in your search. Just like with your other jobs, especially for your first board position, the more people who know that you are interested in serving on a board, the greater your chances are of getting there.”

09 Aug 2022E12: Leadership Presence Starts With Being Fully Present Everywhere You Are00:13:05

Do you aspire to be more fully present, but find it a challenge to actually do so?

You may try your best to be a better listener, but find yourself talking to someone in your office distractedly thinking about the next meeting on your calendar. You may even acknowledge the person with the words, “I'm listening” as you continue to type on your computer. You divide your attention and half-participate in meetings or events while you think about your to-do list. You look down at your phone while having a meal. And the list goes on…

We tend to take pride in multitasking, yet the problem is… We are never fully present where we are in each moment.  And this distraction prevents us from fully experiencing anything.  It also causes us to miss so much.

What are you missing when you're scattered, distracted, and never fully present?

In this episode, I talk about the power of being fully present and share:

  • The true meaning of being fully present
  • A real-life example of how not being present can affect your effectiveness as a leader and as a human being
  • A mantra to use to reground yourself to the present moment when you find yourself becoming distracted

Noteworthy Quotes from This Episode

“Some of us wear it as a badge of honor that we're able to do all these different things and multitask [...].”

“You are the embodiment of every single interaction you're having.”

“We talk about having a powerful leadership presence but… It's not about how you stand. It's not about how you look. It's about how you are and how you're being with others.”

“The reality is that you're providing an experience of what it's like to be in your presence to others every single moment.  In every single interaction.”

“Leadership skills are not something that you're born with. You really have to learn and grow into that field.”

We talk about:

  • Katie’s journey – how an engineer became an executive leader
  • Transitioning from being a team member to a team leader

Noteworthy Quotes from This Episode

“Leadership skills are not something that you're born with. You really have to learn and grow into that field.”

“It's really about knowing yourself and your own strengths, your own weaknesses, your values, and your beliefs. That's really foundational into becoming a strong leader. Because if you can't understand yourself and what you're good at, it's really hard to serve others.”

“I think some of my best advice is, you know, really, just to be yourself, don't try to be one of the men, it's okay to be different than your male counterparts. And honestly, that's the value that you bring to the table because what makes you different is really what sets you apart from the rest of the team.”

“Your brand has got to be something that's authentic to you.”

“Have fun. Life is too short to be in a career that doesn't energize you or jazz you every day or to work with people that don't respect you [...] life is really too short. You spend too many waking hours working. That should be fun. And if it's not, find something else.”

“Regular self-care, including eating healthy foods and exercising regularly, are not optional items on your to-do list.”

“Whatever you're placing before your physical and spiritual self-care rituals will only be enriched when you are healthy, centered, connected, and grounded.”

“Revisit your why and create a clear statement about what you want to contribute to the world… it reminds you of your bigger purpose and the bigger impact you want to have.”

“Only YOU have the answers to what makes your soul sing and to what depletes it. I would say stop avoiding those answers…”

“What I know for sure from working with organizations for the past two decades is that we have overlooked the importance of selecting leaders who have the ability to inspire others.”

Inspiring others is a big part of a leader’s job. If you haven’t been thinking about inspiration, I would argue you haven’t really been leading at your best.

To help you become a more inspiring leader, in this episode I offer some ancient wisdom from a Greek philosopher and break down three elements that make up the ability to persuade and inspire others.

In this episode:

  • The importance of the “inspiration factor” in leadership
  • Aristotle’s 3 elements of persuasion
  • Emotional connection and its impact on inspiration

“If I'm not feeling inspired, how am I going to motivate other people [and] have people that work for me to feel inspired?”

“A fundamental part of a leader’s job is setting an inspirational tone and inspiring others. It is a prerequisite.”

“You've got to be able to understand people and their emotions and connect with them in order to evoke them to action.”

“Feelings and emotions are an integral part of the human experience. [...] So we can ignore them all we want. We can tell people [to] check their emotions at the door. But they are still there.”

“As a leader, that [Pathos] is an important piece to tap into. And I'm not talking about manipulation. I'm talking about human connection.”

Noteworthy Quotes from This Episode

“There have been moments where I've had to look at myself and say: ‘you know what? I'm not even sure what my authentic self is, because I've been trying to fit this particular mold and trying to be this particular thing, because that's what society says I should do, or how I should act.”

“It's too much work to try to be someone else or to try to fit into a mold. I've just learned, and I'm seeing that the more authentic I am, the more authentic I see other people. I think that's a better formula for success.”

“In my opinion, there's no reason why extraordinarily competent women, experienced women, accomplished women, should walk around feeling as if they don't belong.”

“I think that the roles that we are in as leaders are just conduits for bigger things for us to have an impact on the world, or even to what our true purpose is in life.”

“I can be a more authentic leader, but not an authentic leader, who [...] is just being me [and] just saying whatever comes to my mind, but is actually really much more intentional about my choices. And I'm more the person I've created myself to be versus a product of my upbringing and my emotional wiring.”

“Authentic Leadership is not just being whoever you think you are. But it also includes a series of traits that include connecting with other people.”

“If we are looking for more authentic connection, then we've got to do some deeper work on ourselves to become more grounded and to become more secure in who we are, what we stand for, and how we interact and connect with others.”

“In my view, the challenge for us in 2023 is not “how do I be more authentic?”.  It's really, “how do I create a more authentic version of myself?”

07 Feb 2023E27: The Impostor Phenomenon and 3 Strategies to Overcome It00:27:54

“Even people at the highest levels of authority and success experience self-doubt, feelings of inadequacy, and feeling like a fraud.”

These feelings can serve as obstacles to grounded self-confidence and continuous learning for many of my executive coaching clients. These feelings and thoughts often show up as flickering internal power outages where insecurity, questioning your own worthiness to be in a role, and fear of looking incompetent, run rampant inside your own head.  I hear about these feelings and ruminating thoughts from powerful, confident people every single day in my one-on-one coaching and advising work. I have noticed that they tend to run most rampant when a leader moves into a new role or starts something new. I too am not exempt– I have experienced these feelings myself.

Today’s episode is all about this “impostor phenomenon”.

We often hear the term “impostor syndrome” describing these feelings, and we use this terminology like a pop culture word without really understanding it. Today we’ll clarify what it is,  give you the information you need to assess if this is something you’re experiencing and provide you with 3 strategies to help you overcome it.

In this episode:

  • What is the impostor phenomenon?
  • The ways the impostor phenomenon can show up
  • The origin of the Impostor Phenomenon
  • Debunking the female impostor myth (HINT: It’s not unique to women)
  • 3 strategies to conquer your negative self-talk and feelings of inadequacy
  • And more!

28 Feb 2023E30: 5 Tips to Help You Connect And Build Rapport with Your Remote Team00:21:25

“Becoming more intentional about building rapport and deeper relationships when people are not in front of you takes a bit more thoughtful planning on your part. I'm here to tell you the potential results are worth the effort.”

With the growing acceptance of flexible working outside of the office, leaders have to learn to lead a remote workforce effectively.

As leaders, we traditionally emphasized connecting with teams by walking around or impromptu meetings in the office. These leadership habits work best when you're co-located and in-person. But how can leaders build rapport and connection when all or part of the team is working remotely and they're not all together in the office?

In this episode, I share five practical tips to help you connect and build rapport with your remote team. The fundamentals of connecting with people are essentially the same whether you are in person or not.  With a bit more effort and intention you can become better at building rapport and connection and leading others without being face-to-face.

In this episode:

  • #1 Be more deliberate and intentional about making connections
  • #2 Schedule and conduct regular check-ins with your team
  • #3  Note and acknowledge birthdays, special occasions, and other personal milestones
  • #4 Send weekly emails with updates and personal anecdotes
  • #5 Pay attention, authentically notice and acknowledge what others bring to the table
  • And more!

07 Mar 2023E31: How To Be a More Objective Leader00:19:26

“While many of us describe and see ourselves as objective and non-judgmental, the reality is probably closer to the opposite.”

The assumptions and resulting judgments you make about any given person or situation may be fundamentally flawed and you probably don't realize it. This drives you to take leadership actions that are less impactful than you would like and may lead to significant conflict or communication issues.

Why?

The reasoning process we use to make decisions is fundamentally flawed, and in this episode we’ll discuss why.

In this episode, I am going to discuss ways to become a more objective leader. I’ll offer a framework that highlights the flaws in the way we reason, make assumptions, and draw conclusions. I will also share some ways to minimize our natural tendency to jump to conclusions, assumptions, and judgments that may be more subjective than we think.

In this episode:

  • An example of flawed assumptions in action
  • The Ladder of Inference: the 7 steps of our reasoning process
  • How conflict and communication issues can easily arise from this reasoning process
  • Questions to ask yourself to become more objective
  • Why it is important to strive to be more open and curious instead of being right
  • And more!

30 May 2023E43: Emotional Intelligence, Coaching, & Leadership with Richard Boyatzis00:51:00

“When you create relationships where people feel listened to, cared for, a part of something, and they feel like they belong, you're doing something really human. And that's where we unleash our talent.”

In this episode, I talk to Dr. Richard Boyatzis, one of the world's leading experts in leadership development and emotional intelligence.

A senior executive I was working with in 2008 handed out the book “Primal Leadership” to his entire executive leadership team. We then facilitated discussions about emotional intelligence and leadership that greatly impacted leadership expectations and ultimately the culture of the company.

I am thrilled to have one of the co-authors of that book with me today to discuss not only the topic of emotional intelligence, but also leadership development, the importance of emotional intelligence and leadership, and how leaders can help people change through the power of coaching.  We talk about his latest book, “Helping People Change: Coaching With Compassion for Lifelong Learning and Growth” and how trying to “fix” people is a faulty goal. Great leaders are also great coaches, and we discuss how leaders can become better at coaching others.

There are too many gems of wisdom in this episode to describe. If you are seeking to increase your overall leadership effectiveness, you won’t want to miss this episode.
In this episode:

  • Richard’s journey from astronautics to his role today
  • Coaching people to be open to learning and change
  • Good intentions don’t mean effective change
  • Paying attention to the quality of your relationships as a leader
  • The importance of a shared sense of purpose

13 Jun 2023E45: The Power Code for Women with Katty Kay and Claire Shipman00:32:55

“The women who get to the top of the existing power structures have the ability to make the most change.”

Today’s episode is all about women and power. We explore the question, “How do we move away from the old notion of what constitutes power and redefine it to meet the needs of the future?” That question leads to a deeper discussion about how women leaders can embody and model this new type of power.

I was introduced to my guests, Katty Kay and Claire Shipman, when I read their book, “The Confidence Code”.  I recommend that book to almost every woman leader I work with, as it offers meaningful research and insights about the cultivation of confidence in women. I have the pleasure to talk to these veteran journalists, authors, and all-around powerhouse women about the research and conclusions about women and power in their new book, “The Power Code”, which launches today.

“Everybody can learn to reinvent whatever it is you want to do. You just have to learn how to go about it.”

Gendered ageism is the intersection of age and gender bias in the workplace. This is a growing concern for professional women. I talk to so many women about wanting to reinvent themselves and start a new career or get a new job. They’re hesitant because they feel as if they're dismissed in the job market due to their age.

In the workplace, this form of bias impacts their job security and their financial future. I couldn't think of a better person to have a conversation about this topic than Lesley Jane Seymour.  Lesley is a former editor, an author, and the founder of the Covey Club, an online community for professional women focused on reinvention.

Lesley uses her personal story of reinvention after being editor-in-chief of four national magazines as inspiration to others.. She inspires people to reach beyond their self-imposed boundaries to realize that they can reinvent themselves at any age because she did it herself.

In this episode:

  • The perception of “you’re done” at a certain age
  • Minding your own prejudice around age
  • Getting out of your comfort zone
  • Reinvention is not linear, it’s an exploratory process
  • Striving for perfection is the death of success

11 Jul 2023E49: Breaking the Taboo: All About Perimenopause and Menopause with Dr. Mary Claire Haver00:32:08

“Stop using the scale as a measure of your health. It's what we were taught to do. [...] But it's really, really wrong. We are more than just that number. And it's a very poor indicator of chronic health.”

You may have seen today's guest on Tik Tok, Instagram, or YouTube because she's a sensation on social media. She's an OB/GYN who specializes in treating menopausal and perimenopausal women.  I'm thrilled to have Dr. Mary Claire Haver on the show today.

When we are seeking to maximize our performance, why don’t we have real conversations about physical health and changes? As hormonal shifts happen to women’s bodies beginning as early as their mid 30’s, there is a real impact on health, body weight, and overall well-being. Yet the topic of this perimenopausal and ultimately menopausal stage that may last decades is often ignored when we talk about women and health.

So why am I talking about this on a leadership podcast? I facilitate women's executive networking sessions and this topic keeps coming up as a taboo subject that the women leaders in these groups want to talk about. It impacts health & well-being. It's affecting how women show up as leaders. And it's affecting how we feel about ourselves. So let's talk about it today.

In this episode:

  • Why 40+ women are experiencing weight gain
  • What’s perimenopause? And what’s menopause?
  • The difference between men and women as we age
  • Dr. Haver’s top tip: make sure you are getting enough fiber in your diet
  • What to do about sugar and processed foods as we age as women
  • And more!

20 Sep 2023E53: Leading with Love and Laughter with Patrick Malone and Zina Sutch00:25:49

“Your joy doesn't come from filling out the paperwork, your joy doesn't come from meeting that priority goal, your joy comes from the people that you lead”

How can we create workplaces where we lead with love and laughter?

Whether you're working in a corporation, a nonprofit, or a government organization, think about the climate and think about the culture that you're creating as a leader. Is it fear-based, risk-averse, serious, and riddled with judgment? Or is it an environment where people feel connected to each other and the mission, and love coming to work? The tone you set with your words and behaviors every day creates the culture people experience at work.

In this episode, I talk to Patrick Malone and Zina Sutch, authors of the book Leading with Love and Laughter. We talk about why leading with love and laughter is critical to creating productive and meaningful workplaces.

In this episode:

  • What has changed and evolved in Zina and Patrick’s thinking about leadership over the years
  • The importance of taking care of yourself and self-love
  • Research that supports the benefits of bringing love, laughter, and joy in an organization
  • Holding people accountable with love
  • How to lead with love and laughter
  • And more!

13 Dec 2023E59: Developing Warriors for the Human Spirit with Margaret Wheatley (Part 2)00:23:56

Welcome back to the rest of my conversation with Dr. Margaret Wheatley. If you missed the last episode where we started our conversation, I really encourage you to go back and listen to it before you start this one.

If you're not familiar with Dr. Margaret Wheatley, you're missing out. She is the author of the classic and iconic book “Leadership and the New Science”.  I was exposed to that book early on in my career, and she was one of the first people to tie quantum theory and quantum science to leadership.

10 Jan 2024E60: 4 Leadership Habits to Get Your Groove Back in The New Year00:18:41

“Your soul needs nurturing and care too, and that nurturing comes from alignment with meaning and purpose. Whatever else you are placing before your physical and spiritual self-care rituals will only cause you to be reactive and out of the flow.”

You know what it feels like when you're at your best, you're in the flow, and you're just rocking it on all cylinders. Those days when you look forward to getting out of bed in the morning. You know that feeling?

Now, I'll bet if you're like most of the coaching clients and the leaders that I work with, you also know all too well what it feels like to lose that groove and to feel so overwhelmed and burnt out that you are no longer excited about what you're doing.

If you’re feeling like you’ve lost your groove, this episode may just be the catalyst you need to get it back. I'll provide you with 4 strategies to get your groove back quickly and make you feel more excited and energized about your work and life.

In this episode:

  • Identifying your triggers for overwhelm and frustration
  • Prioritizing personal health and self-care for high-performance
  • Finding purpose and meaning in life
  • Taking a soul search break and making a change to become more in alignment with your purpose and goals
  • And more!

Embodiment of some key core values and how everyone is showing up every day is really what creates workplace culture, not just having an initiative to drive it.  Claude is a master at creating that type of culture and that’s what we’re talking about today. Her title of “Chief Heart Officer” is in itself a provocative and definitive message about the culture.. Yet leading with heart does not mean less accountability or the lack of hard, direct conversations. Claude and I discuss how to lead with heart AND have hard conversations about accountability.

In this episode:

  • Creating space for people and a feeling of safety in the workplace
  • Building a culture around humanity and heart
  • Getting leaders in your organization aligned with your vision
  • What does a Chief Heart Officer actually do?
  • Advice for leaders aiming to create a more inclusive workplace
  • Leading with heart does not mean lack of direct feedback or accountability
  • And more!

07 Feb 2024E62: Leadership Development Through the Unconscious Mind with Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman00:43:09

“The most important things in this world are the products of the human mind”

Your conscious mind is responsible for only a tiny sliver of what science says is going on inside your brain. Most of what you experience, your moods and the things you like and dislike come from a much more mysterious, unknown part of your mind, the unconscious.

That’s what we’re talking about in this episode, with psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman. We discuss the psychology of the unconscious mind, accessing your intuition, and how it all influences our behavior and our leadership.

In this episode:

  • Understanding the brain, its functions, and the conscious mind
  • The psychology of the unconscious mind and the collective and personal unconscious
  • Tuning into your unconscious mind to be a better leader
  • Accessing your intuition
  • The shadow: Part of the personal unconscious

21 Feb 2024E63: Deep Leadership Development Work: Healing Childhood Adversity00:10:32

“If you want to lead transformational change, you have to do the work on yourself first.”

What makes a leader great?

This question is a hard one to answer, even after my 25+ years studying and working in the field of human and leadership development.

As I think more deeply about that question, I am convinced after all this experience working with leaders that a great leader is someone who spends the time to do the deeper work on themselves. Greatness is sourced from the inside-out. The leader who works on their own tendency to get defensive, learns to regulate unproductive and reactive emotions, and understands their own weaknesses is one who gets out of their own way. Part of that deeper work includes healing the impact of childhood adversity.

Today we’re talking about how our childhood adversity can impact our leadership effectiveness. We also talk about doing the deeper work to overcome our own unproductive, unconscious patterns that get in the way of our interpersonal relations.

In this episode:

  • What makes a leader great?
  • The impact of childhood trauma on human development
  • Doing the work on yourself to lead transformational change
  • And more!

13 Mar 2024E65: Learning to Listen to Yourself (Even When You Don't Like What You Hear)00:13:19

“Listening to yourself takes courage, because sometimes you may not like what you hear.”

Have you ever had something happen to you that feels like a signal from the universe, but you just dismiss it as meaningless?

In this episode, I want to talk about the notion of listening, but listening from a very different vantage point than you'd expect. As leaders, we often talk about listening to others, but today we are talking about the art of listening to yourself. Your own deep wisdom is talking to you all the time, you just need to take the time to hear it. We are so conditioned to look for the rational that our deeper knowing and intuition is dismissed or ignored.

In this episode:

  • The importance of deeply listening to yourself
  • Embracing your true potential
  • How to listen to your inner wisdom
  • And more!

27 Mar 2024E67: What to Look for Instead of Happiness to Feel More Alive And Fulfilled?00:10:53

“What can you do today to feel more alive and fulfilled  with meaning and purpose?”

Our pop culture and  the media is flooded with methods and strategies to help us become happy, or at least happier.  Today, let’s discuss this happiness trap and reconsider and reframe this relentless pursuit of happiness.

Instead of searching for happiness, I suggest we pursue deeper meaning, purpose, significance and fulfillment in our lives. Feeling happy is a temporary state. Being driven by meaning and purpose is a lasting state, regardless of circumstance.

In this episode of Power Presence Academy, I talk about the pursuit of meaning over happiness, emphasizing that happiness is fleeting and often disconnected from a sense of fulfillment.

I also talk about the importance of making a difference in our environments and how impactful actions may not always coincide with feelings of happiness. I remind listeners about the power of choice and encourage leaders to reflect on their strengths and use them to make a positive impact in the world.

In this episode:

  • The pursuit of meaning over happiness
  • Importance of making a difference
  • The power of choice and reflection
  • Using your strengths for greater fulfillment and impact
  • And more!

03 Apr 2024E68: Fostering Inclusion in the Workplace with Kelly McDonald00:32:38

“The best teams and the best leaders are the ones who will say: please tell me more about that.”

What is inclusion? How do we practice it in organizational life? In this episode, I talk with Kelly McDonald, a speaker and author on the topic with an extensive background researching consumer trends and changing demographics.

We discuss how to create an inclusive workplace with practical strategies like acknowledging discomfort, understanding different perspectives, and overcoming unconscious biases. While we often talk about diversity and inclusion, Kelly insists that many leaders aren’t comfortable having the conversations that will produce deeper understanding and genuine inclusion. She shares practical tips to help leaders stop shying away from difficult conversations for fear of “saying the wrong thing”, and instead learn to ask questions and listen with curiosity and respect.

Kelly highlights the importance of respect and listening fully to the experiences shared by diverse groups to foster real communication and inclusion.  We discuss how to lead diverse teams effectively by tapping into different backgrounds and viewpoints to drive innovation, business success, and a more collaborative culture.

In this episode:

  • What it means to create an inclusive workplace
  • The importance of respect and listening
  • How to lead diverse teams effectively
  • And more!

17 Apr 2024E69: What's Power Presence and Leadership Presence in Action?00:17:13

“Presence is the energy you embody. We are energetic beings, and we all embody a presence.”

How powerful is your presence?

I received a question from a listener recently asking me about the meaning of the name of the podcast. Specifically, what is Power Presence?

I decided to address his question in this episode.

To do this I start by defining what I consider presence to be and sharing two examples of the impact of your presence as a leader. I then explain how to access your own Power Presence.

In this episode:

  • My definition of Presence
  • Leadership presence in action: The impact of a supportive teacher versus the impact of a dismissive advisor
  • Accessing your own power presence

Noteworthy Quotes from This Episode

“Power is the capacity to act and influence. [...] They had capacity to act and influence based on their title, but I think all of us have the capacity to act and influence regardless of our title.”
“I would define power presence as the ability to show up in an intentional, grounded, credible, connected, and interpersonally impactful manner wherever you are.”
“Power presence is accessed by making an internal shift from reacting to our emotions and thoughts and the ego part of ourselves, to actually observing and intentionally choosing our thoughts and responses to what is needed in the moment.”

01 May 2024E70: Overcoming the Paralyzing Fear of Failure00:10:25

“When we fail, we learn what doesn't work, we learn to adjust, we learn to bounce back and try a different approach. If we avoid failure, we can't learn.”

In this episode on the Power Presence Academy podcast, I want to dive deep into a topic that resonates with so many, the fear of failure. Through my work as an executive coach I've heard countless stories of individuals struggling with the fear of failure, especially in high-pressure leadership or executive roles.

Rather than seeing failure as personal inadequacy, I challenge you to view it as a natural part of growth and learning. Together, let’s discover how failure can pave the way for success. Join me as we confront the fear of failure and embrace the transformative power of resilience and learning.

In this episode:

  • The fear of failure and how it can consume one's identity
  • Common fears leaders have around perceived failure
  • How the fear of failure can paralyze action and learning
  • Reframing failure as an opportunity for growth and learning
  • And more!

15 May 2024E71: How to Lead with Respect: 4 Subtle Habits That Signal Disrespect00:13:35

“Respecting others may be your intention. But your actual words and actions demonstrate  intentions to others.”

In this episode, I discuss the difference between your intentions and your actual actions as a leader, particularly in the context of showing respect to others.

"She may be smart, but she doesn't respect others."  This was an actual comment written on a feedback assessment a senior leader received. The feedback was jolting, as the woman receiving the feedback did not intend to show anyone disrespect. But comment after comment indicated that her colleagues and employees felt otherwise.

What if there's a disconnect between our intentions and how they're perceived by others through our actions?

When it comes to respect, we may assume we are demonstrating it in our interactions with others, but others may think we aren’t.

In this episode of Power Presence Academy, I talk about four common behaviors you may be exhibiting that inadvertently signal disrespect. It’s a chance to do a quick self-check on some things you may be doing that show disrespect to others.

In this episode:

  • Identifying unconscious disrespectful behaviors you may unintentionally exhibit in your leadership role
  • Four common actions you take that can signal a lack of respect
  • The importance of being respectful of others’ time and schedules
  • Showing respect by being fully present instead of multitasking
  • And more!

“You carry a virus that spreads to your co-workers. It spreads wherever you are, but it definitely spreads at work. So, what is the result of the virus you carry?”

In this episode, I talk about emotional contagion and how our emotional and energetic tones are picked up by those around us. Emotions are contagious. Do you ever find yourself energized and inspired when you're listening to an upbeat and uplifting story? Do you notice that you suddenly feel depressed or anxious when you are around someone who is negative, complaining,  and unhappy?

Thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors carry energy. That energetic tone is picked up unconsciously and is indeed contagious. Tune into this episode to discover more about this phenomenon and how you can better manage your own energy and be more deliberate about the energetic impact you have on others.

In this episode:

  • The infectious nature of emotions
  • The impact of emotional contagion on leaders
  • The science behind this phenomenon

26 Jun 2024E74: The Mother Wound, Relationships, and Leadership with Mari Grande00:34:24

“Part of the work of becoming a better leader is doing inner work.”

Since great leadership starts from the inside-out, I have been inviting therapists and mental health experts on the podcast to talk about deeper issues that may impact the way we lead. While building leadership skills and competence is important, how we show up every day is driven largely by factors that are unconscious to us. The more we cultivate greater self-awareness about the drivers that cause us to react defensively or trigger negative emotions, the more we can learn to manage them and lead with greater emotional intelligence.

In the latest episode, I had the pleasure to interview Mari Grande, a therapist based in New York City who specializes in the “Mother Wound”. Specifically, the early childhood attachment experiences we had with our mother dramatically impacts our relationship behaviors as adults. Since leadership involves relationships, understanding this unconscious driver can help us as we seek to improve all of our relationships with others.

In this episode:

  • The Mother Wound and how it impacts us
  • Attachment theory and leadership
  • The window of tolerance and your nervous system
  • One thing you can do to help overcome your Mother Wound
  • The Mother Wound and how it manifests in leaders.

13 Nov 2024E84: What to Do When You’re Underestimated as a Woman in Leadership00:15:11

He said, ‘Well, Janet. I'll say what I really thought of you when I first saw you. The first thing I thought is, “Oh, here's blonde bimbo. And what is she going to say?”’ [...] Then he goes, ‘You talked and I thought, Wow, Barbie has a brain.’”
In this episode, I talk about something women leaders are unfortunately no strangers to: being underestimated or stereotyped because of their appearance or simply because they are women. If you’ve ever had the experience of being pigeon-holed or underestimated because of judgments people make based on unconscious biases they may have, you’ll want to listen to this episode.
I share two stories of my own and offer some tips  to navigate this type of situation when it arises.

In this episode:

  • When an executive assumed I was a junior employee and not the session leader
  • How I handled it and what I learned from that situation
  • When a male colleague admitted that he had initially assumed that I must be a “blonde bimbo”
  • How to maintain your power and presence when you cannot control the judgements of others
  • How to counter being underestimated

Noteworthy Quotes from This Episode
“Early in my career, I thought leadership was about being decisive, acting fast, and always having the answer. But as I moved into more complex roles and worked with top executives, I realized that sometimes the best thing you can do as a leader is to stop, take a deep breath, and not react.”

“ I realized that my instinct to react, driven by stress and a need to be in control, especially under pressure and under [a] tight deadline, wasn't just unproductive, it was undermining my ability to lead.”

“[Pausing] helps you and gives you time to invite collaboration. When you hold space for others to contribute, you build trust and engagement.”

“ When you pause, you give your brain time to shift from its reactive fight or flight mode to a more thoughtful and strategic state.”

“ The next time you're in a tense situation, take a breath, pause, and ask yourself, how do I want to show up right now?”

“ Sometimes quiet, collective action is more powerful than loud resistance.”
