Hot on the heels of their recent announcement of a £110m fundraise, I catch up with Be.EV CEO and Co-Founder Asif Ghafoor. We talk all things emobility, disruptive markets, fundraising, company culture, entrepreneur insanity and community-based EV charging hubs, and much more. 

About Asif Ghafoor: 
After 25 years working in UK infrastructure investment, Asif co-founded Be.EV to change the way public EV charging infrastructure is delivered: faster, fairer, rooted in local communities and nice to look at. Today, Be.EV is the fastest-growing public EV charging network in the North. It has just won the backing of Octopus Energy Generation, who are investing up to £110m to dramatically scale the network and take it national. It’s Octopus’ first investment in EV charging - and comes with a target of delivering 1,000 new charge points by 2024.

About Be.EV.:
Be.EV is the largest EV charging network across Greater Manchester, and is expanding at a rapid pace across the north of England in order to make charging simple, reliable, and effortless. They work closely with the communities in which they operate and were appointed by TfGM in 2019 to grow and maintain the city-region’s publicly owned EV charging network. This included a major upgrade of the existing network as well as the delivery of additional public and private funded chargers. Their mission is to give all drivers what they want: more chargers, in more places that they can access more easily and more cost-effectively.

What’s it all about?

I first saw Instagrid pitch at an investor event about 3 years ago, and they blew me away. Such an obvious idea, but difficult to do, such a big problem that no one thinks about, but Andreas and his Co-founder Sebastian did, and they are now scaling like crazy.  If you like batteries, tools, buildings, or clean air, you’ll love this episode.

Andreas Sedlmayr is the Co-Founder and CEO of instagrid. What’s it all about?
Batteries, glorious batteries. With the exponential growth of battery demand for both electric vehicles, and grid storage, we’re already seeing resource challenges as mining and supply of materials tries to ramp up with this demand.  Given batteries are lasting in EV’s far longer than many expected, I thought large scale recycling of batteries was some time away, but it isn’t for an interesting reason, and it’s not to do with end of life batteries. What’s it all about?
Serial entrepreneur David Martell founded and floated a business, then founded and sold a business ($170m) to BP, now he’s at it again, founding Home EV Charging company EVIOS. David started his first emobility business ‘Chargemaster’ in 2008; how many EVs on the road then?  We discuss capital, profitability, fundraising, and of course EV Charging. Enjoy the episode.

About David Martell: 
David Martell, Chief Executive of EVIOS and Andersen EV, was an advisor on EV infrastructure to the Department for Transport from 1995 to 2000. He was the founder and CEO of Chargemaster, which went on to become the UK’s largest EV charging network and was acquired by BP in 2018.

He has unrivalled experience and knowledge of the EV sector in the UK – with extensive contacts within car manufacturers, energy suppliers, established infrastructure businesses, local authorities, installers and component suppliers. 

David has created a highly capable management team at EVIOS, with combined EV industry experience of over 25 years. The Andersen business was acquired by EVIOS Plc in October 2022. The two businesses will continue to operate independently.

About EVIOS:
EVIOS is a newly formed British company that manufactures the smartest electric vehicle home charge point on the market. The brainchild of David Martell (founder and former CEO of Chargemaster), the new EVIOS One features an intuitive, jargon-free interface and smartphone app that allow users to configure the chare point to suit their needs and preferences – prioritising the price, sustainability, or speed of each charge. 

From launch, the EVIOS One will be the only charge point that can be funded via interest-free monthly instalments, helping to make EV ownership a more viable option for more motorists. The EVIOS One is also the first unit of its kind to offer multi-user functionality and PIN-controlled access, making it a very practical real-world option for shared residential or business parking areas, or homes with more than one EV. 

EVIOS is a British company. Components are sourced from within the UK wherever practicable, and the home charger is designed, assembled and shipped from EVIOS’s new premises in Bedfordshire. What’s it all about?

Solving some of our biggest issues in the C&I (Commercial and Industrial) sectors. Buildings use SO much energy, electricity, heat and of course cooling. As climate change increases tempretures, more cooling is needed, creating a negative feedback loop. My guest today addresses this and many other energy and emissions problems, using……Water. About Yaron Ben Nun: 

Yaron Ben Nun is Founder and Chief Technology Officer at Nostromo Energy, where his vision for reducing carbon emissions by decarbonizing buildings led to the development of Nostromo’s  novel IceBrick™ energy storage technology. Yaron has led the company through its pre-seed capital funding, to winning a $500,000 grant and two-year product development sponsorship from Shell Plc’s GameChanger Clean-Energy Accelerator, to the company’s first commercial deployment of its IceBrick™ technology at med tech company Medinol’s Jerusalem headquarters, to building a pipeline of projects in the U.S. and globally. As CTO, Yaron leads the overall vision and strategic development of Nostromo’s technology and product development, with the goal of making the IceBrick™ an industry standard and playing a key role in the emerging behind-the-meter energy storage arena.

Previously, Yaron served as the Head of Innovation at Lightapp Technology (now ZIRA),  an industrial analytics software company for operational excellence in energy management. Yaron also held a marketing position at a cleantech heat-pump technology company Phoebus Energy. Earlier in his career, Yaron served as a combat pilot, flying an A4 Skyhawk in the Israeli Air Force.

About Rubina Singh: 
Rubina is a pre-seed deeptech fund manager at Octopus Ventures where she focuses on investing in deeptech enabling a sustainable planet. Previously, she established and led the innovation division at British Gas and the net-zero strategy at Centrica Ventures. She started her career as a solar engineer at Fraunhofer, where she headed up Fraunhofer TechBridge, a division dedicated to validating and backing early-stage cleantech. She also holds advisory roles with the European Innovation Council’s deep tech programme and the Solar Impulse Foundation and sits on the board of POWERful Women. 

Rubina has published several technical papers and thought leadership on cleantech innovation in the likes of IEEE and TechCrunch, and has a B.Eng. and M.Eng. in sustainable energy engineering.  She has won three awards for her contribution to the energy sector, including the Innovator Award 2022.

What’s it all about?

Cheap, abundant, low carbon energy. Looking at a Deeptech that has huge and literally game-changing capabilities. There has been much excitement, investment, and some key milestones in Nuclear Fusion in the last year. This week I have not one, but two guests, a Fusion founder and CEO, Dr Nick Hawker, and his investor, Dr Robert Trezona of Kiko Ventures. This is such an exciting space, and things are happening now that give rise to great optimism we can achieve Fusion power within a couple of decades. In the meantime, let’s get as much solar and wind in the ground as we can, but here could be cheap, abundant, safe, baseload.

About Nicholas Hawker: 

Nicholas is the Co-founder and CEO of First Light Fusion. Nick’s research into fusion began in 2007 as part of his Master’s thesis, where he worked at the University of Oxford with Yiannis Ventikos. This work continued into a DPhil, where he performed hydrodynamic simulations of shock-driven cavity collapse. These simulations showed that cavity collapse leads to inertial confinement of the gas inside the cavity and revealed that extreme states of matter could be reached, possibly entering the regime for fusion. To explore the concept of energy generation via this process, Nick and Yiannis co-founded First Light Fusion Ltd in 2011. Nick also spent three years tutoring at Lady Margaret Hall during his studies. After finishing his DPhil in 2012, Nick joined First Light Fusion as CEO and CTO, and continues to oversee the technical vision of the company.

About First Light Fusion: 

First Light Fusion was founded by Professor Yiannis Ventikos, Head of the Mechanical Engineering

Department at University College, London, and Dr Nicholas Hawker, formerly an Engineering lecturer at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.

The company was spun out from the University of Oxford in July 2011, with seed capital from IP Group plc,Parkwalk Advisors Ltd and private investors. Invesco and OSI provided follow-on capital.

The business has grown from a research-focused university project to a fully-fledged company that has developed not only a strategy for how to make fusion energy work, but also a sustainable business model based on the technology.

Entrepreneurship, and the journey of failures. Uri Levine is the founder of not one, but two Unicorns, Waze and Moovit. He continues to be an active entrepreneur and investor, but his passion to help create more start-up success stories, and to support entrepreneurs led him to write ‘Fall in love with the problem, not the solution’. About William Tope:
Will is the Chief Commercial Officer at LiNa Energy, with over 10 years of global experience in the energy industry, working across oil and gas business development, corporate strategy, and power trading where he focused on grid-scale batteries. Will leads the planning, development, and implementation of strategies to commercialize and scale-up LiNa Energy’s technology, forming partnerships with customers in target storage markets and with manufacturing partners. Will has a Masters in Chemical Engineering from the University of Bath.

The often overlooked issue of renewable heat. I take dive into the world of solar thermal with Hyperion client Naked Energy. What’s it all about?
Letting lose my inner nerd! I’ve known Helen for some time, known in a loose sense, we shared a panel session at a Fully Charged event some years ago, and I’ve watched with enthusiasm much of her TV and Fully Charged presenting, When I saw she’d written a book about a gigantic solar powered machine, I needed to know more! But seriously, the topic of how our planet works has held my interest and curiosity since I was a child. Helen’s latest book, ‘The Blue Machine’ was a must read, and inviting her to the podcast to share more really is me indulging that inner nerd, and hopefully yours too. Enjoy the episode.

Helen was born in Manchester. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University College London. As a physicist, she studies the bubbles generated by breaking waves in the ocean to understand their influence on weather and climate. 

Helen has been a regular presenter of BBC TV science documentaries since 2011. She also hosts the Ocean Matters podcast, is part of the Cosmic Shambles network, and is one of the presenters for the Fully Charged Show. She has been a science columnist for the Wall Street Journal since 2017 and she is the author of the bestselling Storm in a Teacup: The Physics of Everyday Life, Bubbles: A Ladybird Expert Book, and Blue Machine: how the ocean works.

Christoph Berger - vilisto


What’s it all about?
Renewable Heat, as we’ve featured recently, so often the elephant in the room. Addressing the needs of decarbonising heat is critical to the clean energy transition. In this episode we address heating and inefficiency in commercial and public buildings as I speak to CEO and Founder of Vilisto, Christophe Berger. Having recently raised a £5m they are focused on scaling to bring their solutions to a wider audience.

About Christoph Berger:
Christoph Berger is Co-Founder and CEO of vilisto. During his studies of Energy Systems at the TU Hamburg and UC Berkeley, Christoph first came into contact with the topic of heat management. His scientific research focused on evaluating and implementing methods of predicting future energy demand in buildings. He soon realised that especially non-residential buildings are often heated inefficiently and that the solutions available on the market were not able to comfortably solve this challenge. Backed up by the results of his study and based on his expertise in energy systems, Christoph then founded vilisto in 2016 with co-founders Christian Brase and Lasse Stehnken.

About vilisto: 
vilisto digitizes the heat management of non-residential buildings and in turn helps companies and public clients reduce their heating costs and CO₂ emissions by up to 32%. At the heart of their digital heat management solution is the intelligent thermostats with an integrated, patented presence detection and learning algorithms that automatically manages the individual room temperature. Started as part of the OxFutures programme, a £3.2m project to boost low carbon economic development in Oxfordshire, it was supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and run through a collaborative partnership between the Low Carbon Hub, Cherwell District Council, Bioregional, Oxford City Council, the University of Oxford, and Oxford Brookes University. Now a separate entity, we’ve been flourishing as our own network since March 2020.

What’s it all about?
The A-Bomb- No not that one. Why does no one talk about Adaptation? Of course we should and must keep working on inventing, scaling and investing in technologies that combat climate change, and help prevent the worst outcomes, but we’re already well down the path of negative climate feedback loops. We have to talk about, and invest in technologies that help mitigate the worst of what is already happening, and what’s to come. Floods, water shortages, food disruption, climate refugees and extreme weather events. They are here, we can’t ignore it.

About David Watson:
David Watson worked in the financial markets as a risk manager and portfolio manager at investment banks and a hedge fund, focused on asset-backed securities and credit instruments.
He co-founded Temporis with business partner Derry Guy in 2010, investing in renewable energy and clean technology to help create a positive impact for the environment.
In 2017, he co-founded Ohme also with Derry Guy when researching clean energy projects and saw an opportunity to adjust demand to meet supply using electric vehicles. He envisioned a smart charging system that would encourage customers to charge at off-peak times by reduced rates with suppliers even sometimes paying them to charge during times of over-supply.
He bought a Tesla and came up with the idea of controlling charging with a smart cable and giving customers better and more visible control. The first working prototype for the Ohme Home Charger was produced in 2018 (it’s still in David’s office today) and Octopus was the first supplier with the final production version in 2019 taking advantage of Octopus’s agile overnight tariffs for EV drivers.
Ohme has also been named by outside investors as a ‘gigacorn’ – a company that has the potential to get rid of one gigatonne of CO2 from the atmosphere per year.

What’s it all about?
Policy and government. For a long time I’ve said that the cleantech sector has done well despite, not because of politics and policy. I do however think that to truly scale we do need politicians and policies to support the energy and mobility transitions, and over the last years we have seen this increase. But we still have a deeply entrenched fossil fuel funded government in the UK, and in many partsof the world, and the Orange buffoon lurking again in the US.  I’ve recently seen a number of posts from the Labour Party, and Bill Esterson in particular that gave me hope for the UK at least, when and if they get elected. I thought I’d ask Bill to join me to share some thoughts, as a former entrepreneur turned Shadow Minister/Minister. A bit different but I hope you enjoy the episode. 

About Bill Esterson:
Bill Esterson was first elected Labour MP for Sefton Central in 2010 and is Shadow Minister for Roads. His brief includes the automotive sector, roads and motoring, logistics, decarbonisation, air quality and integrated transport. 

Mr Esterson has previously served on the frontbench as Shadow Minister for Business and Industry, Shadow Minister for Small Business, and Shadow Minister for International Trade. He was a member of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Education, Housing, Communities & Local Government and Treasury Committees between 2010 and 2015, is Treasurer of the Tribune group of Labour MPs, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, vice-chair of the All Party Group for Children in Care and Care Leavers, vice chair of the All Party Group on Carbon Capture and Underground Storage and vice-chair of the All Party Group on Hydrogen. 

Before entering Parliament, Mr Esterson started and grew a number of businesses between 1995 and 2010, alongside serving as a local councillor. He graduated from Leeds University in 1990 with BSc Hons in Maths and Philosophy and trained as an accountant after graduating.

Batteries, patents, entrepreneurship, and the founder’s journey. I first met my guest Gavin White at Energy Tech Summit in Warsaw a little over a year ago. So much has happened in that time, and he and business partner Kieran O’Regan have built an outstanding team and offering to the battery and automotive sector, with clients including Porsche. Gavin White is the co-founder and CEO of About:Energy, a leading battery data and software company he started in 2022 together with Kieran O'Regan. Their shared mission is to accelerate the transition to electrification by providing the tools and data needed to optimise battery design.
During his PhD research on measuring lithium-ion battery thermal properties at Imperial College London, Gavin invented a novel testing method and obtained a patent. Recognising the commercial potential, he joined forces with Kieran, an expert in electrochemical modelling, to launch About:Energy.

What’s it all about?

Solar. Beautiful Solar roofs. This harks back to my early days in solar, founding a solar EPC which initially at least focused of residential roofs, before expanding to include large commercial installations. Roofit have a unique, aesthetic solar roof solution, just at a time when both energy costs and EU legislation are driving the uptake of retrofit and newbuild solar rooftop installations. Our entrepreneur in the episode is a former banker and dirty energy developer turned cleantech pioneer and Founder. We take a dive into his and his companies growth story, and some of the key elements behind their success so far, and the journey ahead, including another funding round.

About Andres Anijalg:
Andres Anijalg is the co-founder and CEO of Roofit.solar. He has been active in the power industry since 2007 as the head of international development projects at Enefit, the biggest renewable energy producer in Baltics. He was leading the development of a $2.3 billion, 500MW greenfield power plant project in Jordan (middle east) as the CEO of Attarat Power Company. This is where he also understood that fossil fuel does not have a future and started with Roofit.Solar. Andres has been also working almost 10 years in the Scandinavian banking sector, holds his MBA degree from the University of Tartu and has been studying at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. About Dr. Ian Campbell:

Investing in Hardtech! Yes, it’s true, some VC’s do invest in hardtech/deeptech, knowing the specific challenges of supporting companies of this nature to scale. This week I speak with Malin Carlstrom of Danish VC Climentum Capital about scaling deeptech, the importance of team, the usefulness (and otherwise) of advisors and NED’s, and the ‘perfect storm’ giving optimism about the chances for climatetech to have its’ day.

Malin has spent the last two decades investing for leading financial and corporate Venture Capital funds. She is an engineer with a passion for deep-tech and energy transformation, and she is deeply connected in the Nordic VC ecosystems. Malin has previously worked as an investor at Industrifonden, Verdane, SEB, and ABB, building extensive experience in sourcing, deal-making, portfolio management and exiting. As of 2022, Malin is a General Partner at Article 9 fund Climentum Capital, which focuses on hardtech companies that abate large scale CO2 emissions.
