Ed has written some wonderful abstracts in the BHQ Baseball Forecaster about how we can look at playing time in a better lenses than we currently are. He talks about breaking down the plate appearances into several different buckets such as active starts per week, plate appearances per active week and plate appearances per active start.

" On the infield, there will be no more shifts. Teams must have at least two fielders stationed on each side of second base, standing on the dirt. But one overlooked rule: Infielders can actually switch positions between innings (though not during innings). So say an opposing team had two lefties due up. The Tigers could conceivably move Javier Báez to second base, move Jonathan Schoop from second to third and move Nick Maton from third to short. That would allow the rangy Báez to patrol the infield against lefty hitter." We talk about how that can impact player eligibility in season and for next year as well.
