05 Jan 2024Kyle Meredith Rewind: Andy Taylor on Recovering From Pop, David Bowie’s Death, & Duran Duran’s Lost Reportage LP00:39:05

We're taking a few weeks off here on Kyle Meredith W..., but wanted to thank you for listening in this year by sharing some of our favorite interviews from 2023. We'll be back with brand new episodes on January 8th. For now, here's my chat with Andy Taylor.

Here are the original show notes:

Andy Taylor joins Kyle Meredith to talk about Man’s A Wolf To Man, his first solo album of original material in 36 years. The former Duran Duran guitarist talks about how he first considered a Power Station reunion before deciding to focus on himself, how his songwriting is recovering from a lifetime in pop, that David Bowie’s death had a major impact on his decision to return, and his thoughts on channeling music versus copying it. Taylor also draws the parallel of this new set to the politically charged lost Duran Duran album “Reportage,” simultaneously giving us the history of how the label held the band back from progressing artistically while also highlighting the new material that was considered at the war in Ukraine, Brexit, and the lack of protest songs in pop while the likes of Jason Aldean and Anthony Oliver fill that spot in country music.

Listen to Andy Taylor sit and chat about all this and more in the new episode or watch it on Youtube. Please take the time to like, review, and subscribe to KMW wherever you get your podcasts, and keep up to date with all our series by following the Consequence Podcast Network.

23 Dec 2023David Alan Grier on The Color Purple, Candy Cane Lane, & A Soldier’s Play00:35:06

David Alan Grier joins Kyle Meredith to talk about his work in the latest film version of The Color Purple, as well as working alongside Eddie Murphy for the first time in 30 years in the recently released Candy Cane Lane. The comedy and drama legend tells us how, early on, he based the rhythm of his career off of what he saw Michael Keaton doing in the 80s, what it was like getting to play Santa Claus in the Prime Video film, and the uncomfortable clock costume he wore in the live-on-stage version of Beauty & The Beast. Grier then digs into his role in The Color Purple, a story he had auditioned twice for in the past for the original 1985 film as well as the Broadway version. Grier discusses portraying Shug’s dad, the Rev. Samuel Avery, and what it's like to record the music before acting the role. We also get to hear about joining the cast of A Soldier’s Play for the 3rd time and his next movie, The American Society of Magical Negroes.

20 Nov 2024Cruel Intentions Is Back, and Claire Forlani and John Tenney Have All the Secrets00:14:07

It’s been 25 years since Cruel Intentions turned manipulation into an art form, and now the series adaptation on Prime Video is ready to twist the knife even further. Claire Forlani (Meet Joe BlackMallrats) and Jon Tenney (ScandalThe Closer) step into this world of privilege and deceit, bringing their own sharp edges to characters who thrive on power games. The pair spoke with Kyle Meredith about their roles, their inspirations, and the ongoing allure of a story that just won’t let go.

Forlani, who hadn’t seen the original 1999 film, leaned on 1988's Dangerous Liaisons for her take on Claudia, a mother whose icy ambition extends beyond her daughter’s life to her stepson’s. 29 Nov 2024Chris Diamantopoulos Talks “The Sticky,” Voicing Mickey Mouse, and a Tortoise That Will Outlive Us All00:26:05

Speaking with Kyle Meredith, Chris Diamantopoulos is as animated in conversation as he is on screen, riffing on everything from his latest project, The Sticky — a darkly comedic take on Canada’s infamous maple syrup heist the premieres December 6th on Prime Video — to his unexpectedly costly adoption of a 130-pound tortoise. Listen to the chat now.

Based on a real 2011 heist involving millions of dollars’ worth of maple syrup, The Sticky is a quirky, Coen-esque series where Diamantopoulos plays a bumbling Bostonian trying to outwit fate. Co-starring Margot Martindale and a pitch-perfect Jamie Lee Curtis, the show’s oddball ensemble and sepia-toned vibe make it a must-watch holiday binge.

Beyond The Sticky, Diamantopoulos reflects on a career spanning 40 years, from his turn as Robin Williams in Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Mork & Mindy to voicing Mickey Mouse.

27 Dec 2024Rewind: Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood on His Photography, Nick Cave, and Radiohead’s Reunion00:35:38

On this week's Rewind episode, Kyle Meredith speaks with Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood, who opens up about his new photography book How To Disappear: A Photographic Portrait of Radiohead.

The book offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at Radiohead, a band known for its mystique, and includes personal photos interspersed with words of reflection on the band’s middle years. Greenwood credits Nick Cave for helping him frame the concept of the book, finding beauty in the “middle years” of a band’s career.

The bassist jokes about the band’s reluctance to be photographed, though ultimately reflects on how supportive his bandmates were of his passion for photography. The interview delves into the band’s creative process, particularly how the environments they recorded in influenced their sound, from haunted 15th-century manor houses during OK Computer to derelict country estates for In Rainbows.

The bassist also mentions his recent work with Nick Cave, having played bass on Cave’s new album, and how the band’s hiatus allowed him to explore other creative avenues. As Radiohead approaches its 40th anniversary, Greenwood hints that the band recently reunited for a jam session and is excited about what’s next, though he’s careful not to reveal too much about their future plans.

25 Dec 2024Rewind: Maynard James Keenan & Les Claypool on Thwarting Criminals, Performing in Costume, and Drinking Wine00:31:05

For this Rewind of our 1000th episode of Kyle Meredith With…, Kyle sits down with two icons of rock — Primus frontman Les Claypool and Tool’s Maynard James Keenan. Revisit the collision of giants.

The two rockers chat about their ongoing collaboration and friendship, highlighted by the “Sessanta Tour.” The conversation quickly turns hilarious, with the two bantering about everything from thwarting bank robberies and wrestling bears to recalling their first meeting during the 1993 Lollapalooza.

Claypool also teases the idea of finally finishing his long-awaited projects with Sean Lennon and Billy Strings. Les then goes on to liken his approach to performing to Halloween — a celebration that allows him to become different personas while entertaining the audience.

Maynard, for his part, opens up about his initial insecurities that led him to take on different characters during his performances, noting that doing so still serves as a buffer between himself and the audience. The conversation also takes a fun detour as Claypool recounts a surreal acoustic jam session he had with Eric Idle, "Weird Al" Yankovic, and Puddles the Clown.

15 Mar 2024The Black Crowes Chris Robinson on Reunion Album Happiness Bastards00:33:41

The Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the band's new album, Happiness Bastards, which marks their first collection of new material since 2009.

Inspired by his experience of touring Shake Your Money Maker for its 30th anniversary and the writing of Bob Dylan, Robinson explains how he attempted to take his lyrics to a new level for Happiness Bastards. Looking towards some of the all time greats, Robinson sought to harness the dark romance of rock 'n' roll through stories and images, all while leaving room for the listener's own interpretation.

At the same time Robinson was focusing on the album's many tales, he and the band were cranking away in the studio. For the Happiness Bastards sessions, the band wrote many more songs than ultimately don't appear on the record. The artist hints that while these cuts were left on the editing room floor, they could potentially show up on another project.

Listen to The Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson talk about Happiness Bastards. The band will be touring behind the record beginning in April, and you can get tickets here. Physical creator & showrunner Annie Weisman joins Kyle Meredith to talk about wrapping up the Apple TV+ series that stars Rose Byrne as Sheila Rubin, the quietly tormented housewife in '80s San Diego who takes control of her life after finding an exercise group.
