12 Apr 2017 | Ep. #312: Elliott BROOD | 01:00:20
Elliott BROOD is a well-established Canadian band whose unique form of enigmatic folk-rock has been captivating audiences for 15 years. Consisting of childhood friends Casey Laforet and Mark Sasso, and early adopter Steve Pitkin, the trio of multi-instrumentalists in Elliott BROOD have won awards and toured the world hard, releasing five acclaimed albums along the way, including their most recent LP, 2014’s Work and Love. Assigned to write an Exclaim! Magazine piece, I recently travelled to their new HQ in Hamilton, Ontario to check out their workspace, talk about Grandad’s Doughnuts, the time Mark and Casey saw Nirvana in Detroit, what they make of Hamilton, their work contributing songs to the new Anna Paquin show Bellevue, what their new album might be like, and more. All that, plus you can hear a yet-to-be-released song called “The Fall” from their next record, Ghost Gardens, at the end of our talk. 09 May 2017 | Ep. #318: Jessica Moss | 00:54:28
Jessica Moss is a well-respected and talented musician currently based in Montreal, Quebec. Perhaps best known for her membership in Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, Moss is a violinist who has also played prominent roles in Black Ox Orkestar, Carla Bozulich’s Evangelista, and collaborated with Vic Chesnutt in the last years of his life. Though accustomed to working with others, Moss recently made her first solo record; it’s a compelling one called Pools of Light, now available via Constellation Records, prompting her to tour across England and Ireland after upcoming shows in Montreal and Brooklyn respectively. Jessica and I caught up for a conversation, in which we discussed meeting Leonard Cohen during a Silver Mt. Zion recording session at the Hotel2Tango studio, being abroad when Trump was chosen to turn the United States of America into a failed casino, parenting in a weird world, working with Kevin Doria and receiving encouragement to write her own music, global warming, and much more. Tim Darcy is an exciting and provocative American poet, singer, songwriter, musician, and performer currently based in Montreal, Quebec. Well-respected for his work as a dynamic vocalist and intricate lyricist in the band Ought, Darcy recently stepped out for a record and tour under his own name. The record is a great one called Saturday Night, which was released by JagJaguwar Records in February 2017, and Darcy and his band have already crossed parts of Canada, the United States, and Europe to spread the word about it and play some shows. With some more concerts ahead of him, Tim and I caught up for a chat a few weeks ago where we discussed his experience at this year’s controversial SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, which faced backlash over performance limits they imposed on travelling musicians, the political climate and consciousness in America and Canada, how writing with and playing in Ought has influenced him as a solo artist, what’s up with the new Ought record and his own musical plans, and much more. 18 Jul 2017 | Ep. #334: Change of Heart | 00:44:11
Change of Heart is an iconic, underground Canadian rock ‘n’ roll band based in Toronto, Ontario. Formed in 1982, Change of Heart initially consisted of singer/guitarist Ian Blurton, bassist Rob Taylor, keyboardist Bernard Maiezza, and drummer Ron Duffy. By the time Change of Heart disbanded in 1997, Blurton and Maiezza were the sole original members left. A rather different, 13-person version of Change of Heart entered Reaction Studio in early January of 1992 to record the album Smile, which would come to be regarded as a landmark effort in Toronto music history. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the record’s release, Label Obscura is reissuing a remastered, double-vinyl limited edition of Smile, which has prompted Change of Heart to re-convene for shows, including one in Toronto at the Horseshoe on July 22, 2017, dates in Waterloo, London, Kingston, and Ottawa in September, and shows in Calgary and Edmonton in October. I recently travelled to Change of Heart’s practice space in Toronto to meet with Michael Armstrong, Glenn Milchem, Rob Taylor, Bernard Maiezza, and Ian Blurton to discuss the history of their band, the album Smile, what Toronto was really like in the early 1990s, and other stuff too. 11 Aug 2017 | Ep. #341: Weaves | 01:36:03
Weaves is a fantastic, noisy, and infectious rock band based in Toronto, Ontario. In 2016, Buzz Records released Weaves’ self-titled debut album and it went on to be regarded as one of the finest records to ever come out of Toronto and was recently shortlisted for Canada’s Polaris Music Prize. The other day I drove down to the Greater Good Bar in Toronto to meet with singer and songwriter Jasmyn Burke, guitarist Morgan Waters, and drummer Spencer Cole to discuss their band and delve into their self-titled record with track-by-track commentary. You’ll hear snippets of each song as we go along. We also got into breaking news, as the band just announced that their follow-up record, Wide Open, will be out October 6, and so we talked about what the new album is like and also the first single, “#53,” which you can hear in its entirety on this show.
