Canada's major oil sands producers are working together on a first-of-its-kind net zero initiative that could help ensure long-term, secure supplies of affordable and responsible energy for North America.

Together, Canadian Natural, Cenovus Energy, ConocoPhillips Canada, Imperial, MEG Energy and Suncor Energy have formed the Oil Sands Pathways to Net Zero Alliance. The goal of the Alliance is to achieve a phased reduction in emissions from oil sands operations, reaching net zero by 2050, working in collaboration with Canadian federal and provincial governments.

As the single largest oil resource on the continent, and the third largest in the world, the Canadian oil sands offer unparalleled potential to help ensure long-term, secure supplies of affordable energy for Canada and the United States, and for North America to become the preferred supplier of sustainable oil to the world.

"The Pathways Alliance has a well-defined plan to reduce current oil sands emissions of 68 megatonnes per year in phases over the next three decades to ensure both near- and long-term progress," said Alex Pourbaix, President & Chief Executive Officer, Cenovus Energy. The initial focus of the group is a foundational carbon capture and storage (CCS) network to gather CO2 from more than 20 oil sands facilities in northern Alberta and transport it for safe storage in underground geological formations. While similar large-scale CCS projects are already being developed in other oil producing jurisdictions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway and the Netherlands, the Pathways Alliance facility will be one of the largest of its kind in the world.

The Pathways Alliance vision recognizes that oil is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions that must be addressed as the world transitions to a lower-carbon future. At the same time, many independent and credible forecasts conclude that, to meet the world's growing energy demand, oil will continue to be needed for decades to come as part of a diversified energy mix - both as a transportation fuel and as a critical building block for products we use every day.

"There is no switch to turn off hydrocarbons and quickly ramp up renewables in a way that ensures a continued supply of reliable, affordable low-emissions energy," said Mark Little, President and Chief Executive Officer, Suncor. Generally, these virtual currencies seek to maintain a value of approximately $1.00 USD. The mechanisms for maintaining this value vary by coin but rely typically on various incentives designed into their minting, burning, and collateral management processes to keep the value of the coin close to the $1 “peg.”

Stablecoins continue to attract investors; for example, the research firm Messari.io reports that the value locked in the USDC stablecoin is up roughly 700% for the seven months ended July 31, 2021. In addition to the custody, valuation, illiquidity, and other risks applicable to any virtual currency investment, we believe that investors considering stablecoin investing should consider, at a minimum, the following questions:

Who or what is backing the stablecoin?

How difficult is it to convert the stablecoin back to USD or other currencies? ● What drives demand for the coin?

Backing Stablecoins: Institutions and Collateral

As of July 31, 2021, there are few regulations governing the issuance of stablecoins, including the requirement that each coin issued be “backed” by assets having a value equal to or greater than the number of coins outstanding.

However, the market for stablecoin dollars is competitive, and the issuers of USDT and USDC have in recent months been issuing reports showing the value of their “reserves” as of certain dates, as verified by third-party accounting firms.

This approach differs from the “decentralized autonomous organization” issuing the DAI stablecoin, which uses a computerized “smart contract” to maintain reserves of various virtual currencies, such as Ethereum and Bitcoin, with a value roughly equal to the number of DAI issued.

Following the financial crisis of 2008, which stressed the money-market mutual fund industry, the Securities and Exchange Commission made several rule changes requiring managers of those funds to stress test their portfolio valuations and report the composition of their portfolios timely to the regulator. No such regulations yet exist for stablecoin reserve portfolios. Accordingly, investors should consider carefully whether these reserve assets are sufficient to

support the value of the coins in circulation and whether the reserves are invested in a way that could fund substantial liquidations in times of market stress without significant losses.

Liquidity and Convertibility

Ultimately, the market determines the price of a stablecoin, regardless of the value of the reserve portfolio. In addition to any premium or discount to these reserves, the technology behind the coin (blockchains, lending and staking applications, etc.) can have a significant impact on the returns investors can expect from their stablecoin holdings.

Throughout 2021, a huge portion of news and media cycles surrounded their coverage on the emergence and explosion in popularity of non-fungible tokens, or NFTs. Operating as a new class of digital assets, the concept of NFTs has caused a ripple effect throughout industries and markets the world over. While 2021 may have been the year that saw NFTs gaining traction, 2022 may be the year that they truly take off.

1. PFPs

A profile picture, or PFP for short, is a type of NFT that has grown immensely in popularity alongside the broader notion of NFTs, themselves. For example, in 2017, CryptoPunks defined an entire category of PFPs through their generative NFT collection that grants users the ability to represent their internet identity with one of their NFTs as an online avatar or PFP.

More recently, social media platform Twitter introduced verified hexagonal avatars as part of their Twitter Blue program. This tells us that this trend is far from over and is bound to continue growing throughout 2022.

2. IRL Utility

NFTs have already showcased their ability to serve as a utility in real life, or “IRL,” beyond the online digital realms of Discord, OpenSea, Twitter, or other platforms. As NFTs act as a token, they can be utilized as a gateway to access certain IRL experiences (i.e. private memberships).

Some examples of top-performing NFT membership groups include Kevin Rose’s PROOF Collective, Gary Vee’s Veefriends, and Adidas Originals’s Into The Metaverse NFT, the latter of which allows NFT holders to redeem physical merchandise in multiple stages and keep the NFT as a gateway to their future metaverse experiences. The Flyfish Club, another NFT membership program instituted by Vaynerchuk, shows how restaurants can leverage NFTs for private memberships, exclusivity, and rewards. Looking deeper into 2022, we can easily imagine how this model can translate to other IRL experiences and activities like wellness, sports clubs, and more.

Meet Crowdfi, where crowdfunding meets crypto

As both blockchain technology and crowdfunding are relatively new concepts a meeting of these giants was somewhat inevitable. However, it seems Crowdfi could be the first pout of the gate with a working platform. Crowdfi is, as you’d expect from the intro, a decentralised crowdfunding platform. The system is built on The Ethereum Blockchain but don’t sign up expecting the latest board games or a cheap 3d printer, Crowdfi is firmly a social enterprise meaning it’s exclusively for projects which will help in a socioeconomic fashion.

With the global pandemic and the current land war in Europe it’s safe to say, as the Chinese curse goes, we live in interesting times. We wanted to do something for the most vulnerable. We know the crypto community is incredibly compassionate and socially aware of the struggles the least fortunate amongst us face. So, Crowdfi is a platform where those in the most need can come and ask for some support. The system works in a similar way to yield mining in that by investing in the token and donating to a cause gives investors a 75% share from all subsequent transactions. So, not only will donations eventually ease the suffering of others, active backers and token holders will earn reflections as the total donation grows.

Blockchain aside, the system works like most traditional crowdfunding sites, if it’s possible for an industry barely a decade old to have traditional versions. Users sign up and launch their campaigns by creating emotive pitches and videos, spreading the word, and hoping to pick up enough backers to see them over the line. Backers then donate in the native Crowdfi token and like we said they can earn 75% of every subsequent transaction fee based on the number of tokens they hold. The campaigns then run for the duration and if successful at the end of their term the funds are transferred.

Because the system is based on blockchain technology the whole ledger is immutable, therefore making the platform safer than traditional, there’s that word again, crowdfunding platforms. The Crowdfi platform has multiple categories at present, but the top six are as follows:

· Emergency

· Education

· Humanitarian

· Coronavirus

· Charity

Despite being in its infancy, Crowdfi already has two live campaigns, both of which are excellent causes and are already collecting donations. Time will tell if Crowdfi becomes the flagship of DeFi crowdfunding, but for now they are off to a good start.
