28 Feb 2023Building Brand Integrity and Sustainable Cannabis Products with Alex Boone (Botani)00:25:22

Some of the best business ideas come when we take the time to reflect on innovative ways to think outside the box. The best place to reflect is sitting on a beach in Florida, with a cold drink in your hand, watching the ocean waves.  That's exactly where Alex Boone was inspired to start Botani, a premium hemp paper company for cannabis products.

From there, the idea developed and Alex has now created a company that works with cannabis producers to create premium cannabis products that are sustainable and consistent every time. Botani provides all natural hemp rolling papers and booklets, and they have invested in new equipment to reduce energy and water consumption.

We also discuss brand integrity and how brands should ensure that products that are labeled as natural are actually natural.

Alex Boone is managing director of Botani, maker of premium botanical and hemp paper products for cannabis use. Botani, is an offshoot of the SWM Group of Mativ Inc. (formerly SWM international), where Alex is also VP/GM alternative markets.

With nearly 20 years of experience within SWM, Alex has led sales, marketing and product development teams for North American and international markets. They also discuss the key components of the balance sheet and income statement that cannabis business owners need to pay attention to, stressing the importance of regular inventory counts and budget planning.

Our guests also share their perspectives on the gross profit trends in the cannabis industry, the demand for legal products, and the challenges faced by social equity license holders in obtaining capital. Despite facing challenges that are unique to the cannabis industry, Summer and Angelita highlight the resilience and determination of cannabis business owners who continue to thrive in the face of adversity.

Tune in to this episode to learn more about navigating the complexities of cannabis accounting and the bright future of the industry!

Summer Thorn spent the first 11 years of her professional career in the United States Air Force where she served her country honorably both at home and abroad and in deployment to Iraq. Summer used her GI Bill and completed her bachelor’s degree at the Darla Moore School of Business and then went on to earn her Certified Public Accounting license and her Master’s in Business Administration. Summer first became interested in the cannabis space during her time in college, where she minored in criminal justice and learned of the racial injustice the punitive drug laws cause. While this information stuck with her, she wasn't exactly sure how her degree in accounting could help. She realized she could use her expertise to help the emerging cannabis industry with her knowledge of accounting and started her own accounting firm; Dope CPA.

Angelita Green has over 20 years of experience in accounting and tax. She has been working with cannabis clients for 7 years, from seed to sale and is a continuous student of Cannabis Accounting. A member of the National Association of Cannabis and Tax Professionals, where she continues to receive cannabis training and network with other accountants in the industry. 13 Aug 2024Breaking Barriers: How Conservative States are Embracing Cannabis00:53:20

What’s happening in the emerging cannabis markets? In this week’s episode of the Kaya Cast, we discuss the latest developments in the US with expert Hirsh Jain of Ananda Strategy.

The cannabis landscape in the U.S. is changing rapidly, with 24 states now allowing adult-use cannabis. Hirsh shares insights on why Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida are the next big catalysts in the industry, each with unique circumstances and timelines for legalization.

We dive into Ohio's upcoming adult-use sales in early August, making it the first major red Republican state to adopt such measures. Ohio’s move is a significant milestone, showing bipartisan support for cannabis legalization and setting a precedent for other conservative states.

We also explore the surprising yet impactful example of Mississippi. With around 70% of the vote for its medical cannabis ballot measure, Mississippi demonstrates the broad bipartisan appeal of cannabis, even in conservative regions. The state's open structure and rapid patient registration highlight its successful approach, contrasting with struggles in other Deep South states.

Lastly, we turn to Florida, where a pivotal vote in November could legalize adult-use cannabis. Despite requiring a 60% threshold and facing opposition from Governor Ron DeSantis, polling and historical support for medical cannabis suggest a favorable outcome. With 900,000 medical cannabis patients and a robust market, Florida could soon become a leading state in the cannabis industry.

Join us as we explore the exciting potential of these emerging markets and what they mean for the future of the cannabis industry.
